Support Technician, Information Technology (IT) Salary

Job Description for Support Technician, Information Technology (IT)

Support technicians in the information technology field are required to maintain the computers, network servers and phone technology in business settings. They often work daily with the hardware, repairing or replacing defective equipment. They may be required to install new or upgraded software and conduct testing on new or current software. IT support technicians may be responsible for diagnosing problems in computer hardware and may be called upon to troubleshoot problems for users, and may work in a help desk or on-call position. IT support technicians often must verify that needed upgrades are installed on systems and may need to conduct periodic inventory of the computers used in a business. They may collect outdated equipment for recycling or disposal and will usually be the people responsible for installing new computers and attaching peripheral equipment such as printers. Occasionally, IT support technicians may be required to instruct new users on software or hardware, especially when major upgrades are made. IT support technicians may be required to have specialized education and certification depending on the type of business for whom they work. Most IT support technicians have obtained a two or four year college degree in the IT field. Certification in computer software programs are often helpful in these positions. IT support technicians are not generally closely supervised but do usually report to the IT manager or someone in a similar position. These employees generally are not required to work in close quarters with other employees though they do spend the majority of their time in a cubicle or office setting. Frequent team activities are not characteristic of this type of position; self-directed individualized activities are far more common.

Support Technician, Information Technology (IT) Tasks

  • Install, update, and repair software on organization systems.
  • Track and monitor day-to-day performance of systems, and conduct analysis with the goal of improving performance.
  • Respond to requests for new or configured hardware or software, and keep inventory up to date.
  • Troubleshoot hardware and software problems, logging problems and documenting fixes.

Stop iPad Screen from Dimming or Locking Automatically

The iPad screen defaults to automatically dim itself and then turn itself off to black after a fairly short amount of time of inactivity. That s great for preserving battery life of iOS devices, but if you re like me you keep an iPad or iPhone alongside you full time while working as a control panel for Pandora, podcasts, and email, and having the screen lock after a few minutes of inactivity is annoying.

Fortunately you can adjust the amount of time it takes for the display of iPad to dim and lock itself.

How to Stop iPad Screen Dimming and Locking Itself Automatically

Here s how to prevent the iPad (or iPhone or iPod) screen from dimming and auto-locking:

  1. Open Settings app
  2. Choose Display Brightness
  3. Tap Auto-Lock and choose Never as the option for auto-locking the screen

Close out of Settings, and now when you leave the iPad, iPhone, or iPod touch screen alone it won t automatically lock itself or even dim.

This feature exists on all iPad devices, regardless of how new or old they are.

On older versions of iOS you can also make the adjustment in Settings > General > Auto-Lock > Never

A caveat to remember is this will always be in effect, meaning you will have to lock the screen yourself using the top power button when you do want the screen to go dark. That s especially important for when you re on the go, if not to prevent battery drain than to help protect your personal data in case you happened to lose the device (don t forget to use a strong passcode too).

Perhaps in an ideal world, there would be different power management settings for auto-locking for if a device was plugged in and if a device was on battery, but iOS does not have that feature yet.

GraphX: Unifying Graphs and Tables

GraphX extends the distributed fault-tolerant collections API and interactive console of Spark with a new graph API which leverages recent advances in graph systems (e.g. GraphLab ) to enable users to easily and interactively build, transform, and reason about graph structured data at scale.

Motivation

From social networks and targeted advertising to protein modeling and astrophysics, big graphs capture the structure in data and are central to the recent advances in machine learning and data mining. Directly applying existing data-parallel tools (e.g. Hadoop and Spark ) to graph computation tasks can be cumbersome and inefficient. The need for intuitive, scalable tools for graph computation has lead to the development of new graph-parallel systems (e.g. Pregel and GraphLab ) which are designed to efficiently execute graph algorithms. Unfortunately, these systems do not address the challenges of graph construction and transformation and provide limited fault-tolerance and support for interactive analysis.

Solution

The GraphX project combines the advantages of both data-parallel and graph-parallel systems by efficiently expressing graph computation within the Spark framework. We leverage new ideas in distributed graph representation to efficiently distribute graphs as tabular data-structures. Similarly, we leverage advances in data-flow systems to exploit in-memory computation and fault-tolerance. We provide powerful new operations to simplify graph construction and transformation. Using these primitives we implement the PowerGraph and Pregel abstractions in less than 20 lines of code. Finally, by exploiting the Scala foundation of Spark, we enable users to interactively load, transform, and compute on massive graphs.

Examples

Suppose I want to build a graph from some text files, restrict the graph to important relationships and users, run page-rank on the sub-graph, and then finally return attributes associated with the top users. I can do all of this in just a few lines with GraphX:

Online Documentation

You can find the latest Spark documentation, including a programming guide, on the project webpage at http://spark.incubator.apache.org/documentation.html. This README file only contains basic setup instructions.

Building

Spark requires Scala 2.9.3 (Scala 2.10 is not yet supported). The project is built using Simple Build Tool (SBT), which is packaged with it. To build Spark and its example programs, run:

Once you’ve built Spark, the easiest way to start using it is the shell:

Or, for the Python API, the Python shell ( ./pyspark ).

Spark also comes with several sample programs in the examples directory. To run one of them, use ./run-example class params . For example:

will run the Logistic Regression example locally on 2 CPUs.

Each of the example programs prints usage help if no params are given.

All of the Spark samples take a master parameter that is the cluster URL to connect to. This can be a mesos:// or spark:// URL, or “local” to run locally with one thread, or “local[N]” to run locally with N threads.

A Note About Hadoop Versions

Spark uses the Hadoop core library to talk to HDFS and other Hadoop-supported storage systems. Because the protocols have changed in different versions of Hadoop, you must build Spark against the same version that your cluster runs. You can change the version by setting the SPARK_HADOOP_VERSION environment when building Spark.

For Apache Hadoop versions 1.x, Cloudera CDH MRv1, and other Hadoop versions without YARN, use:

For Apache Hadoop 2.x, 0.23.x, Cloudera CDH MRv2, and other Hadoop versions with YARN, also set SPARK_YARN=true :

For convenience, these variables may also be set through the conf/spark-env.sh file described below.

When developing a Spark application, specify the Hadoop version by adding the “hadoop-client” artifact to your project’s dependencies. For example, if you’re using Hadoop 1.0.1 and build your application using SBT, add this entry to libraryDependencies :

If your project is built with Maven, add this to your POM file’s dependencies section:

Configuration

Please refer to the Configuration guide in the online documentation for an overview on how to configure Spark.
