Is a Computer Science Degree Worth It?

Education may be “the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world,” in the wise words of Nelson Mandela. but is that true of education in all its forms?

That, indeed, has been the question of the day among Linux bloggers, who have recently been debating the value of the traditional computer science degree in particular.

“How worthwhile are Computer Science degrees?” asked the ever-contemplative team over at TuxRadar in an Open Ballot recently, thus kicking off the conversation.

“Many technology companies complain that graduates, even of Computer Science, arrive with little understanding of how to work in industry and often lack knowledge of basic coding paradigms,” they added. “This seems a great shame to us, especially when there’s so many high quality open source projects out there who’d love some students to help them out, and who they’d be happy to mentor in return.”

FOSS aficionados have had no shortage of opinions on the topic — at TuxRadar or beyond.

‘It’s a Trophy’

“I’ve been a developer for a few years and am completely self-taught,” wrote Johnny in the comments on TuxRadar, for example. “The majority of people who I have worked with in the industry were also self-taught.

“When we were hiring recently and had to do interviews, the candidates who had degrees were often not as good as those who had more real-world experience,” Johnny added.

Indeed, “it’s a trophy, good for display only, but not much good for anything else,” asserted Anonymous Penguin From The Kitchen. “Just like those ornamental swords hanging on the wall. Can’t beat the humble kitchen chopper that’s in daily use.”

‘I Don’t Think I Learnt Anything Crucial’

Then again: “When I came to choosing what degree course to apply for, I was pretty sure a Computer Science degree would probably consist of an awful lot of teaching that I didn’t require, since I’d already picked up quite a lot of knowledge by that point,” chimed in blogger Paul Gideon Dann.

“In the end, I decided to go for something a little off the beaten track, and chose a degree in Artificial Intelligence and Computer Science, which was 50% CS and 50% AI,” Dann added.

Even so, “all in all, I don’t think I learnt anything crucial at university,” Dann concluded.

‘A Degree Is Not Needed’

Similar opinions could be heard down at the Linux blogosphere’s Punchy Penguin Saloon.

“Most of the time a degree is not needed for even advanced programming tasks and never needed for systems admin work for the average, but a degree is needed to get past the less competent HR departments,” consultant and Slashdot blogger Gerhard Mack offered.

Of course, “I really question if anyone with actual skills would want to work in a place that knows so little about the IT industry,” he added.

“I have seen some specialized places that had a legitimate reason to need a degree, but those places are very high level work and I would only suggest a degree if you REALLY love programming and want to take it to a specialized level such as physics simulations, compression/encryption work, etc.,” Mack concluded.

‘One Path Among Many’

Similarly, “I have met excellent software engineers, programmers, and developers who had a CS degree and others who did not,” agreed Chris Travers, a Slashdot blogger who works on the LedgerSMB project.

By the same token, “I have met many mediocre developers who had a CS degree and many who did not,” Travers added.

“I suspect that in some areas of software development, a CS degree is extremely helpful, but I don’t think it is ever required,” he explained. “One thing the open source community is very good at doing is encouraging people to learn by both doing and by talking to those with a great deal of formal training or knowledge.”

Such transfers of knowledge “can be compared to apprenticeships in the old guild system,” he pointed out.

All in all, “I see a CS degree as one path among many,” Travers concluded. “However, one clear advantage it has is that it is meaningful to people who do not know our industry and yet are in charge of screening resumes.”

‘Good Advice for a Decade’

Blogger and educator Robert Pogson said he is “so old my academic career started before Computer Science took off at my university, otherwise I would likely have studied that instead of Physics,” he told Linux Girl.

“My love of all things computer started during first year university when I laid hold of a room-filling pocket calculator called the IBM 1620 which had blinking lights and a typewriter console,” he explained. “With it, I learned Fortran II and Assembler/machine language.

“Later, on the IBM System/360, I learned many different programming languages before I latched onto Pascal and Modula 2,” he added. “Those were some of the best years of my life, and computers have been important to me ever since.”

As a teacher, Pogson has often told his students that “if they were the least bit keen on maths and science, they should get into computer science or DNA tinkering,” he noted. “I think that has been good advice for a decade, and I don’t see any closing down of opportunities in those fields.”

‘Be ANYTHING But a Tech Guy’

Slashdot blogger hairyfeet wasn’t so sure.

Computer science degrees are valuable — “in Bangalore,” hairyfeet opined. “The guy in Bangalore with a half a dozen degrees only gets paid around $19k; you REALLY think you can compete with that?”

Until the U.S. government “does something about offshoring and H1-Bs, you’ll continue to see what happened to the blue collar workers happen to the IT guys,” hairyfeet predicted. “I’m personally tired of hearing of guys that had to train the H1-B that would replace them, or seeing ads in the paper that are so obviously written following the ‘How NOT to hire an American’ playbook.”

Hairyfeet has also advised his oldest son to “be ANYTHING but a tech guy,” he added. “Programmers will be joining autoworkers and machinists on the bread lines. Their degrees cost less than $5k, yours cost over $50k; they can live well on 15K a year, you can’t even pay your student loans.

“It’s simple economics, folks — survival of the greediest — and nobody makes ‘greedy’ like a U.S. corporate head,” he concluded.

‘An Education-Loan Bubble’

Ultimately, “the real concern is. a blohow valuable is ANY degree in the current circumstances?” opined Barbara Hudsongger on Slashdot who goes by “Tom” on the site.

“We’re in an education-loan bubble, similar to the mortgage-loan bubble that imploded a few years ago,” Hudson explained. “Students today are frequently taking on 6-figure debts for a degree that in many cases will never earn back the extra cost, will be out of date before they graduate, and will be irrelevant to their careers several years down the road.

“I only know one person who is using their degree in their original field of study,” she added. “For everyone else, it’s been a case of ‘stuff happens.'”

In short, “the sad fact is that times have changed,” Hudson concluded. “The ‘second IT bubble’ is tailing off. You’ll make more money and have better job security as a cop or firefighter — those jobs can’t be outsourced to the third world, and you have a union to negotiate better working conditions, benefits and wages.”

Katherine Noyes has been writing from behind Linux Girl’s cape since late 2007, but she knows how to be a reporter in real life, too. She’s particularly interested in space, science, open source software and geeky things in general. You can also find her on Twitter .

I would highly recommend Tony Sammarco to anyone needing a divorce lawyer. He explained all my options to me and he made sure I understood the process. I am glad I had him there to help me through this difficult time.

Thank you doesn’t seem enough for all that Bill Stogsdill and Brett Williamson have done not only for me, but my children as well. When I first met both of these gentlemen, each presented themselves with such self-confidence. I instantly knew.

The Stogsdill Law Firm and I were able to obtain sole custody of my son. I am fortunate for the outcome and I am to be a father to my son. Secondly, my ex-spouse was awarded limited portion of the marital estate. Bryan Estes is more than an excellent lawyer.

Whenever my opinion is asked by any of my clients, friends or family regarding what law firm someone should use for their divorce my answer is always the same –The Stogsdill Law Firm, P.C. The kids and I are forever indebted to Bill and his firm.

Bryan’s ability to listen and understand my situation and then offer his advice on how we should proceed was the main reasons I hired Bryan as my attorney. That was the best decision I made, for myself and my children. Bryan helped develop action plans as well as a strategy.

I wanted to thank you for your professional and respectful help with my case. Before entering your law firm, I felt as if my life might be at an end. After being greeted by your office manager, I was completely put at ease. Then after my consultation with you, I knew I was in good hands.

Mr. Smit has demonstrated a high degree of loyalty and trust worthiness to his work and to his associates. Justin certainly is an asset to your Law Firm, his organization skills are second to none. I have and will continue to recommend Justin.

I recently made the life-altering decision of ending a 30 year marriage. While the support of family and friends was very important, I knew that choosing the right attorney was vital. In large part, my future would be determined by his legal advice and skills…

You’ve clearly established a client-focus in your office — providing your clients with the warmth and understanding they need as they go through a very difficult time. Thank you, again, for all your help.

Taking that step to file for divorce was probably one of the most life changing decisions I have ever made. The process is very painful and emotionally draining. I retained Robert Boyd and Justin Smit of The Stogsdill Law Firm, P.C.

13 M.B.A.s that are really worth your money

Sure, you want to get an M.B.A. to make a higher salary and you may even be willing to plunk down the small fortune that the top programs are charging these days. But, still, you’ll want to make sure such an investment will pay off. So it’s worth checking out this list of M.B.A.s in the U.S. ranked by return-on-investment, calculated using total tuition cost and average graduate salary. The big names are all over this list, which probably comes as much-needed solace for grads who have dropped over $100,000 for their degrees. But there are also a few schools that may not have caught your attention before and come in under $55,000.

We’ve included the school’s U.S. News World Report ranking as a point of comparison. Three of the top 13 schools significantly outperform their overall U.S. News ranking when it comes to ROI. Many of the bigger names have a slightly lower ranking when it comes to ROI than overall, but when it comes to the top of the top, it looks like grads are getting exactly what they’re paying for.

Are Extended Warranties For Cars Worth It – Consumer Reports #public #auto #auctions

#extended auto warranties
#

The majority of buyers never use the coverage

Looking for an easy way to save hundreds on your next new car and simplify the buying process at the same time? Skip the extended warranty. The dealer will probably try hard to sell you one, telling horror stories about the thousands of dollars it can cost to replace an engine or transmission. But the odds are you’ll never need the coverage, and even if you do, the money you’ll save in repairs won’t come close to what you paid for the added warranty.

A recent Consumer Reports survey found that 55 percent of owners who purchased an extended warranty hadn’t used it for repairs during the lifetime of the policy, even though the median price paid for the coverage was just over $1,200. And, on average, those who did use it spent hundreds more for the coverage than they saved in repair costs.

Beware of extended-warranty scams

Even if you’re considering an extended warranty, be wary of any solicitation you get through the mail or over the phone. Scammers have found that the warranty business can be very lucrative, and the Better Business Bureau has received thousands of complaints from consumers who have been stung. Typically, the questionable outfits contact an unsuspecting owner whose warranty has just expired or is about to expire.

The impression they want to give people is that they are contacting them on behalf of their dealer or manufacturer, or they are associated with them, which, in fact, they are not,” says Michelle Corey, president and CEO of the St. Louis office of the BBB.

Once they’ve taken the bait, the unfortunate victims often find that their problems have just begun. “They’re not able to read the contract until it’s mailed to them,” says Corey. “They don’t see the conditions, the limitations, or exclusions. Then when they try to use it, they’re informed that pre-existing conditions don’t apply, or they’re told they don’thave maintenance records showing that they followed the manufacturer’s requirements for upkeep.”

The final insult comes when unhappy customers try to get a refund, and they are either refused or only given a prorated amount based on when they signed the contract.

The first step to take to defend yourself against this type of fraud is to contact your dealer to ask whether whoever is trying to sell you coverage is associated either with them or the carmaker. Also ask whether your original warranty really has expired to avoid paying for redundant, overlapping coverage.

Moreover, don’t give your credit-card number or commit to anything over the phone or through the mail without seeing a contract and reviewing what is covered first. And be sure to keep maintenance records and receipts for future reference. Beyond warranty concerns, it may help in selling your car down the road.

If you decide to buy a coverage plan

Peace of mind comes at a price. If you opt for an extended warranty, consider these smart-buying tips.

Don’t buy under pressure. Dealers often try to sell the convenience of rolling coverage into a new-car loan, but that means you may be paying up front for coverage that you already have with the factory warranty. You can purchase an extended warranty after buying the car, although you may find the cost increases as the vehicle ages.

Don’t be afraid to bargain. Among those who purchased an extended warranty, only a third of our survey respondents tried to negotiate a better price for their contract. Most of those who did haggle were successful, saving about $325 on average.

Shop around. You don’t have to buy an extended warranty through a dealership. In fact, you may find a better deal through your auto club or insurance company. But consider this: Satisfaction in our survey was highest among those who bought an automaker-backed warranty.

Go all in. Our survey found little difference in cost between limited and bumper-to-bumper coverage, which is more likely than powertrain plans to include reimbursement for towing, travel expenses, and a rental car. If you’re going to buy, get the full protection.

Read the small print. Before signing, be sure you understand what is covered and where you can take your car for authorized service. Third-party warranties, especially, may have notable restrictions on approved shops. Given how many dealerships have closed in recent years, the availability of participating repair shops is a particular concern.

Consider an extended warranty for the long haul. All cars tend to become less reliable over time, so an extended warranty might be worth considering if you’re planning to keep your vehicle long after the factory warranty runs out.

Free Values: What Are They Worth #auto #paint

The Internet is a wonderful tool. It is an incredible source of information and better yet, a great deal of that information is free of charge. However, there is information and there is “information.”

When it comes to automotive values, it is one thing to put your trust in the hands of an Internet source reporting on new vehicle information and quite another thing to do so with respect to used vehicle values. New vehicle cost information is readily available from the manufacturers, doesn’t vary except when the manufacturer makes across the board changes, doesn’t vary from dealer to dealer and is, therefore, reliable. You can look at several different sources for new vehicle pricing information and they will all be the same.

Used vehicle pricing is an entirely different matter: Manufacturers have no input, no one “sets” any values, rather the values are largely dependent on the law of supply and demand, and if you look at different guidebooks you are likely to find substantial differences, often as much as hundreds or thousands of dollars. It obviously makes no sense to give equal credence to new vehicle pricing and used vehicle pricing, yet many Internet surfers do. Just because a site can provide you with accurate NEW car pricing doesn’t mean they can provide accurate USED car pricing. They are “two different ballgames” and treating them as if they were the same can be misleading and costly. (see: What Makes Us Different )

Unlike many of those “free” Internet sites, Galves doesn’t publish retail values (see: Why We Don’t Publish Retail Values? ). We do not believe there is enough reliable information regarding actual retail transaction prices to publish valid retail pricing. This lack of information is further complicated by other factors that can affect retail sales, including: extent of reconditioning, extent of warrantee, extent of advertising, any special financing, any certification, etc. Most of the suggested retail pricing found on the Internet tends to be unrealistic. And when you encounter what seems like an exorbitant spread between a trade-in value and a retail value, something is wrong! Either their trade-in value is too low, their retail too high, or both. We have learned to be skeptical of such pricing, and so should you.

So don’t be penny wise pound foolish. Yes, we charge for our pricing and we feel it’s worth paying for. But a better recommendation comes from the thousands of our paid subscribers who rely on us to give them the quality of information they need every time they put thousands of dollars at risk as they buy, sell, and trade-in vehicles. And there is a good chance you will come across our information at the dealer you are working with. Shouldn’t you be on the same page as your dealer? We are so confident that we can be useful to you in your next automobile transaction, we offer The Galves Guarantee

Used Minivans: Facts Worth Knowing About

A used minivan can be a good choice for a car buyer that s looking for a vehicle with a lot of cargo capacity, but don t want a big, bulky, and fuel-inefficient truck or full-size van. Whether you are a soccer mom, or you are carpooling, a used Dodge Grand Caravan or Honda Odyssey can provide the space and versatility you need at a great price. Most automakers have at least one minivan in their model lines, and with all the choices that are out there, finding the right used minivan can be a long process. This guide will tell you what to look for, and it will also provide you with some basic facts on used minivans.

Used Minivan Basics

There are three different sizes of minivan: compact (which seats 4 to 5 people), regular (for the average-size family) and large (for greater cargo capacity or bigger families). After the large-size minivan, you re really moving into full-size territory and those vans are best suited to those with really large families.

Of course, prices will vary depending on location and the vehicle s condition, but you can expect to pay about $13,000 for a used 2008 Dodge Grand Caravan, or about $14,000 for a used Honda Odyssey. Correspondingly, a van with more options (such as power locks, keyless entry, and CD changer) will cost a bit more.

Most fairly modern used minivans come with a 6-cylinder powerplant, but there are a few 4-cylinder models still available. Most minivan models provide adequate (but not too brisk) acceleration, and at least 20 miles per gallon on the highway. As the van gets bigger, so should the engine and the fuel mileage and efficiency will go down.

In general, minivans are among the safest vehicles you can buy but before you make your decision, look at your van model s crash test ratings, and you should also look for features such as rollover control and side airbags. Larger vans don t usually come with this kind of equipment, so make your purchase carefully.

Minivans Are Family Friendly Vehicles

When you re transporting your family in a used minivan, you should look for some key features. Adjustable seats, dual air conditioning controls, an entertainment system such as a DVD player/monitor combo, and cup holders all make it a lot easier for your family to ride in comfort.

Many used minivan models come with removable rear seats, but newer models come with second and third-row seats that are reconfigurable (some can even fold into the floor). Those with larger families can benefit from a van with a second-row bench seat. Most minivans can seat at least seven people, and have the space for parents and kids to move about. They can hold more cargo than the average SUV, too.

While sport utility vehicles continue to be popular on the used vehicle market, used Dodge, Honda and Kia minivans are a more financially sound choice for most families. They are cheaper to insure, and maintenance costs are generally lower. They offer better fuel efficiency, and far more cargo area. All in all, a used minivan is an ideal choice for the family on a budget.

How to Handle Warranty Troubles

Before you invest in that extended warranty on your next major purchase, consider all your options. John Ritter

En espa ol | When making a large purchase. whether it’s a computer or a car, you’re likely to encounter an enthusiastic or aggressive sales clerk asking, Do you want the extended warranty? It’s tempting to say yes, especially on a costly item .

Back in 2009 the Kerrs purchased a Samsung flat-screen plasma television for about $1,800 from ABC Warehouse, an electronics and appliance chain. The couple paid the store some $500 for extended warranties that would cover the set until 2014.

In a recent post, we talked about why you should (almost) never lease a new car .

But let’s say you want a used car. As with new, there are also multiple factors to take into account. You can buy the typical used car, either from a private owner or a car dealership, or take a dive into a category known as “certified pre-owned.”

Wait, isn’t that just a fancy name for a used car? Well, not exactly. But understanding the world of certified pre-owned can be daunting. For the meantime, let’s put it this way: It’s not the same thing as buying your Uncle Ronnie’s ’83 Chevy Caprice for dirt cheap. Here are some important pointers on how to get the most drive for your dough.

Why pre-owned cars?

If you re considering saving money by buying a new car, the first thing to keep in mind is that they don’t make used like they used to, in a good sense. “Used cars last much longer than previously,” says Jack R. Nerad, Executive Editorial Director of Kelley Blue Book’s KBB.com. “These days even cars with 100,000 miles on them can be good values.”

Now that doesn’t apply to every used car, so which ones with high mileage can still deliver high value? Says Nerad: “Toyotas and Hondas typically are very reliable and long lasting as evidenced by our resale values for them.”

Used cars can also present a bargain compared to their newer counterparts—not just in price (typically half or less when the car is at least four years old), but also in terms of what you get. That much cheaper used car may come with a lot more fancy options than the new model in its most basic form.

The pitfalls of typical used cars

Especially when you buy from a private owner, it’s difficult to tell how much that used car was used up: that is, how previous drivers treated and maintained the car, regardless of mileage. (You can kick the tires; it won’t help.) The seller, even if it’s a friend or family member, may have no idea when a costly repair lurks just around the corner. Think of all the fights that get started this way.

For anyone buying privately, insist on taking the car to a mechanic—preferably one that you know and trust—to get the car checked thoroughly. But even then, one ace grease monkey working over a few hours might not catch everything potential issue.

If the owner can produce documentation of regularly scheduled maintenance (oil changes, tune ups, tire rotation) you’ll at least have some indication it was properly cared for. But fixed body damage from a collision, for example, is hard for the typical buyer to spot.

And if you buy from a dealership, small or large, you need to know two things. First, there may be limited guarantees, or none at all, once you drive off the lot. And second, dealer financing terms will often be less favorable. That’s especially true at small, private car lots not operated in association with any major brand — the kind that promise financing to just about anyone.

Buying a certified pre-owned car can at least answer the wear-and-tear questions and how they were addressed. The financial picture has upsides, as well as downsides, which we’ll address here.

Understanding certified pre-owned

Certified pre-owned cars started with luxury brands such as Lexus and Mercedes-Benz, and have now filtered down to virtually all makes and models. The advantages are many—so much so that some would argue that “pre-owneds” belong in a category of their own.

A certified pre-owned car is usually less than five years old, with a maximum of between 50,000 and 80,000 miles. (Toyota s can be up to seven years old, and Porsches eight, the Kelley Blue Book people tell us.)

Unlike the typical used car, a certified pre-owned is put through a fairly rigorous inspection by auto manufacturers: somewhere between 100 and 160 inspection points, Nerad says. “Certified pre-owned cars can take the worry out of buying a used car, if they are certified by the automaker,” he adds. Yet he also advises to “be wary of other certification programs” that mimic the CPO process.

Dealers also attach extended warranties and other perks before offering these cars. And yes, it’s true that dealers can charge premium prices as a result, in part because CPOs have been heavily marketed to consumers.

Kelly Blue Book cites the example of a larger non-luxury car, which might have a certification premium above $1,000 compared to its run-of-the mill used counterpart. By entering information here. KBB.com can tell you the value of any make and model—certified, dealer used or from a private seller—with the added flexibility of selecting the year and options. It will also give you a reasonable guess on mileage.

Let’s take a standard hatchback 2009 Toyota Prius in very good condition. In will likely have about 73,000 miles on it; a fair price is $13,460 as a CPO, $12,160 from a dealer, and $10,692 privately purchased. KBB also puts you a click away from credit checks, insurance and extended warranties.

Nearly $2,800 might seem like a high premium to pay between privately used and CPO. And that’s where you need to use your judgment and research skills. The more you know about that privately sold car, the better you can determine how quickly the price difference might be a steal … or get eaten up by mechanical headaches. But there’s more to the picture.

So which option is best?

Nerad points out that CPOs will come with warranty coverage (typically at least five years and 60,000 miles), along with special financing terms that make them worth the extra cost. “Peace of mind will be much better with a CPO car,” he says, adding: “I think CPO cars can be excellent values for many buyers.”

That’s not to say you won’t do well with the other options. It’s also important to point out that any used car, even a certified pre-owned, can run into trouble. But if you go in with a warranty, and come out with better financing, there’s a lot to like about certified-pre owned vehicles.

Besides, your Uncle Ronnie smoked like a fiend. How on earth are you gonna get that cigarette smell out of that Caprice?

Free Values: What Are They Worth
