U.S. Department of Transportation Unveils New, Free, Online Search Tool for Recalls Using Vehicle Identification Number

Consumers will be able to tell whether their vehicle or a used vehicle they are considering is at risk due to an uncompleted recall

WASHINGTON – Every year, millions of vehicles are recalled in the United States due to safety defects or noncompliance with federal safety standards. To help car buyers, owners and renters know that their vehicles are safe and their safety defects have been address, the U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) today unveiled a new, free, online search tool consumers can use to find out if a vehicle is directly impacted by a recall.

The new tool is available on www.safercar.gov/vinlookup and provides consumers with a quick and easy way to identify uncompleted recalls by entering their Vehicle Identification Number (VIN). All major light vehicle and motorcycle brands can be searched.

“Safety is our highest priority, and an informed consumer is one of our strongest allies in ensuring recalled vehicles are repaired,” said U.S. Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx. “Starting today car owners, shoppers, and renters can find out if a specific vehicle has a safety defect that needs to be fixed – using our free online tool.”

Also effective today, under the new NHTSA mandate, all major light vehicle and motorcycle manufacturers are required to provide VIN search capability for uncompleted recalls on their own websites. This data must be updated at least weekly. NHTSA’s new VIN look-up tool directly relies on information from all major automakers, and regularly updated information from the automakers is critical to the efficacy of the search tool.

Consumers can find their vehicle identification number by looking at the dashboard on the driver’s side of the vehicle, or on the driver’s side door on the door post where the door latches when it is closed.

Determining whether there is a recall that consumers need to take action on is easy. After entering the VIN number into the field, results will appear if the consumer has an open recall on their vehicle, and if there are none, owners will see “No Open Recalls.”

“Just as every single automaker should never hesitate to recall a defective vehicle, consumers should never hesitate to get their recalled vehicle fixed,” said NHTSA Deputy Administrator David Friedman. “By making individual VIN searches readily available, we’re providing another service to consumers – the peace of mind knowing that the vehicle they own, or that they are thinking of buying or renting, is free of safety defects.”

Today’s announcement builds on NHTSA’s current efforts to provide consumers with information to help them make informed decisions, including the New Car Assessment Program (NCAP) 5-Star Ratings System, Recall envelope and Safercar mobile apps which provide on-the-spot information on crash protection features, advanced safety features, and recalls on new vehicles and many older models. In addition, NHTSA is working with the National Automobile Dealers Association (NADA) to help ensure that franchise dealerships across the United States become aware of and understand how to use the new VIN search tool.

    The firm may or may not have glass sheets of this specific size. The objective is to identify glass sheets, from the inventory on hand, which match customer specifications. If there is no exact match, then one must be able to obtain all inventory items which have the same Thk (MM) and CAT as the customer specified dimensions but the Length and thickness should be more than equal to the customer specified dimensions. The length and width can then be trimmed to match the exact customer dimensions. Furthermore, the result returned should:

    1. List only the Top 30 glass sheets available in inventory; and
    2. List those Top 30 glass sheets in ascending order of wastage (wastage caused when the glass sheet is trimmed to match the customer specified dimensions)

    1. Formula driven solution This is in range J10:AM14 of the Solutions worksheet. This is a semi dynamic solution (as compared to the Power Query solution). To get the models in ascending order of wastage, one will have to create an Area column in the base data and sort that column in ascending order.
    2. Power Query solution – This is in range J17:AM21 of the Solutions worksheet. This is a dynamic solution. Just change the customer specified dimensions in range G2:J2 of the Data and Query worksheet. Thereafter just right click on any cell in the range below and select refresh.

    Here is a simple four column dataset

    A simple Pivot Table (with a slicer) created from this dataset looks like this

    The objective is to determine the Top 3 users of each week for each slicer selection. Unfortunately, there is no way to sort multiple columns of a Pivot Table all at once. Once may either sort by the Grand Total column or by the individual week wise columns. Since we do not want to sort by the Grand Total column, the only way out is to sort the individual week wise columns. The expected result should look like this:

    Here is a small sample of a Project matrix which shows tasks to be accomplished for various projects. There can only be upto 6 tasks per project.

    From these two tables, one may want to generate another table showing which employees can be assigned to which project (only those employees should be assigned to a project who can complete all tasks). So the ideal solution is to create another column (8th column) in the Project matrix table above which should have a drop down (Data Data Validation) for every project showing which employees are competent for that project.

    Here’s an illustration :

    Assuming that the Project matrix is in range A1:G4 (headers are in row 1)

    1. In cell H2 (for Project1), the drop down should show Jane, Lynda, Paddy and Tom. Mary should not appear there because she cannot perform one of the 3 tasks required to complete the project i.e. Gardener.
    2. In cell H3 (for Project2), the drop down should show Lynda, Paddy and Tom. Jane and Mary should not appear there because they cannot perform the Digging and Engineering tasks respectively.

    The solution is dynamic for the following:

    1. Projects added to the Project matrix Table; and
    2. Tasks added (upto 6 only) or edited in the Project matric Table; and
    3. Employees added to the Competency matrix Table; and
    4. Tasks added to the Competency matrix Table

    I have solved this problem by using:

    1. Power Query; and
    2. Formulas in Data Data Validation.

    The objective is to generate the numeric code for text code of any length entered in a certain cell. For example, a user will type a certain text code, say ABEJ and the expected result should be 1250. For JABF, the result should be 0126. The text entry and text length are both user determined.

    With ABEJ, typed in cell D2, enter this array formula in cell E2

    This formula can now be copied down for generating the numeric code for all text codes entered in column D.

    Assume a simple two column dataset with dates in column A and numbers in column B. The dates in column A are from January 1, 2013 to December 31, 2016 and numbers in column B are for the period January 1, 2013 to December 31, 2015 (there are no numbers for January 1, 2016 to December 31, 2016).

    The objective is to “Compute an average for each day of calendar year 2016. The average should be for the occurrence of that day in the previous 3 years”. Here’s an example:

    1. January 1, 2016 was a Friday (the first Friday of 2016) and is in cell A1097
    2. In cell B1097, the average should be computed as: Average of the “First Friday of each of the previous 3 years”
    3. January 8, 2016 was a Friday (the second Friday of 2016) and is in cell A1104
    4. In cell B1104, the average should be computed as: Average of the “Second Friday of each of the previous 3 years”

    I have solved this problem with the help of the PowerPivot. You may refer to my solution in this workbook .

    Given this dataset, one may want answers to the following questions:

    1. Of all those passengers who originated their journey (City of Origin) from Chandigarh, how many terminated their journey (City of destination) in New Delhi via different modes of transport; and
    2. Of all those passengers who terminated their journey (City of destination) in Jammu, how many arrived in Amritsar (City of Origin) via different modes of transport; and
    3. Of all those passengers who travelled by Bus, how many travelled from City A (City of Origin) to City X,Y,Z (City of destination)

    While one can analyse/slice and dice this data using Pivot Tables, one cannot visualize this data very clearly (even after creating a Pivot chart). I have attempted to visualize this data using a software called PowerBI desktop (a free for download and use Business Intelligence software from Microsoft which rolls all of Excel’s BI tools into 1 – PowerPivot, Power Query, Power Map and Power View).

    In this workbook. I have Sales data of an E-Commerce Company for 3 months. The typical columns in the base data are:

    1. Order Date/Time
    2. City to which orders were shipped
    3. Order Number
    4. Payment Type i.e. Cash on delivery, Net Banking, EMI’s
    5. Order Status i.e. Delivered or cancelled
    6. SKU’s which the ordered items fall into
    7. Products which the ordered SKU’s fall into
    8. Categories which the ordered products fall into

    Given this simple tabular representation, one may want to analyse and visualize this dataset from multiple perspectives based on user selections, such as

    “What was the revenue earned from the Top 5products in the A100 category in April for orders shipped to New Delhi ?”

    In this query framed above, the end user should have the leeway to select any/all of the underlined facets. So one can either choose revenue earned or Number of orders. Likewise, one can either select Top 5 products or Top 15 products/Top 5 SKU’s etc.

    With relative ease, one should also be able to “Perform an affiliate analysis” showing which categories are ordered together (to study affiliations). Please review this post for an independent discussion on “Affinity Analysis”.

    Furthermore, one should be able to perform a free form timeline search such as – “I would like to study growth in Total revenue of March 2-8 2015 over Feb 1-4 2015”

    Using a Car Broker to Buy Your Next Vehicle

    For a growing number of consumers, a lack of time and patience for buying cars has piqued an interest in hiring a professional to do it for them. And to help serve this market, a cottage industry has emerged to search the nation for the perfect car for you for a fee, of course.

    But like any deal, it’s important to do a little research on the broker before you jump headlong into their arms, drawn by promises of lower prices and advocacy for your needs. And don’t forget, just because your broker is saying it’s a great deal doesn’t mean that it is.

    The concept behind hiring an auto broker is relatively simple: you’re not a professional car buyer, so why go up against a professional car seller alone? With the confusion of financing, fees, add-ons, taxes and the hurried, jargon-filled nature of the dealership, it only makes sense to leave the bargaining to someone who won’t be fazed by the wheeling and dealing.

    And thousands of satisfied consumers have been glad they did. Countless success stories have been told and retold about the thousands of dollars people saved over a “best-price” offer made one day from a dealership, only to have a broker secure a better price just days or even hours later.

    “I consider myself a good negotiator and this was my first time using an auto broker and we had a very positive experience,” said Junmo Lee, who recently bought a Toyota 4Runner near Denver. At first, he went the traditional route, heading over to a dealership and working with a salesman. But after reaching an impasse with the sales staff, Lee decided to walk out and hire a broker.

    Sure enough, a local broker was able to secure a price about $500 cheaper than he was originally quoted on the exact same vehicle from the same dealership. This is possible because brokers usually have experience with dealerships and know exactly how much they can afford to charge based on how long the car has been on the lot, how many more they have coming in and how much dozens of other dealerships are charging.

    But much of what a broker provides is convenience and peace of mind. After paying a flat fee for the service, Lee found that he likely would have only paid a slightly higher price on his own, but thought the experience was easy enough to win his business the next time he buys.

    “I don’t care for the antagonistic negotiations with salespeople anymore,” Lee said. “We’re telling everyone we can about the broker.”

    Types of Brokers

    One of the tricks to using a broker, however, is figuring out what kind of auto broker you’re dealing with. A simple look through the phonebook or Internet search can scrounge up dozens of names, but not everyone is really working for the consumer.

    A pure, consumer-driven auto broker usually works out of a small office or home office with a skeleton staff, charging flat-fee buying services to any customer who asks them to. But don’t feel limited to hiring a broker in your immediate region. As the market for broker-represented buying has spread, many brokers have started working from Web-based traffic and taking on clients around the world.

    “I can do new and used car deals for anyone, no matter where they live,” said Dave Sutch, CEO of MyCarGuy-SF.com, a brokerage in San Francisco. “I am meeting with someone today who is from New Zealand and wants a 2000 Ford F-150 Harley-Davidson truck. [And] I recently was able to negotiate the purchase of a new Honda Accord for over $1,500 lower here than any dealer in the customer’s home state of Washington.”

    While many brokers are former car dealers, they should not be receiving any compensation from dealerships for passing your name along as a lead. Many operations call themselves brokerages, but make substantial amounts of their profits from dealerships, or even directly work for a dealership. This isn’t illegal or even unethical, but can lead you to question whether they really have your best interests at heart.

    “There are many people and services posing as brokers or leasing and buying agencies,” said Jay Green, owner and founder of AutoSeek.com in Los Angeles. “The best way to check would be to call some random dealerships near them and ask if they have heard of the person or service and what they have to say about them.”

    Feel free to ask questions about the broker, his or her background, the fee structure and the history of the company. Most reputable brokers are proud of their independence from dealerships and will openly boast about how well they know the tricks dealerships can pull.

    “For most people, the initial salesman is about as high on the food chain as they’re likely to have access to,” AutoSeek.com’s Green said. “These people are not qualified to answer my phones, much less look after our clients’ best interests.”

    Fees for these services can start at $200 and can go as high as $1,000 normally, based on the car you’re buying and whether it is a new or used model. Used cars and rare cars tend to carry a higher fee since it takes more legwork to locate a good deal; although, you’ll likely see an even deeper discount from what you could have bought on your own thanks to regional differences in used car prices.

    Your broker should charge you on a flat-fee basis, agreed to before purchase. This way, the broker only makes money when he or she gets a great deal for you and can’t drive up the fee by putting you in a more expensive car.

    If you don’t want to spend hundreds of dollars, wholesale clubs like Costco and auto clubs like AAA offer car-buying services similar to what brokers offer. Even a site like Carsdirect.com basically operates as a broker. Normally, these services operate by working out special pricing with one dealership in a market that can be offered to members in return for referrals. While this isn’t a true brokerage arrangement, the service is often free or very inexpensive and can often take much of the haggling out of the car-buying process.

    A consumer can often get similar deals by simply calling or e-mailing a dealership’s fleet or Internet manager and negotiating prices through them.

    In the end, most consumers can save hundreds if not thousands of dollars by hiring a professional to broker the purchase of their next car. But beyond the dollars, you’re also saving hours of hassle in avoiding the traditional walk-up or even an Internet-based dealership experience. And that can be the most valuable benefit of all.

    What to Look for in a Car Broker

    • Make sure the broker is licensed to legally sell cars in your state.
    • Ask questions to the company or individual about how they find deals on cars, what background they have in the car business and if they receive any money from dealerships or carmakers for making deals.
