Navigation GPS Review

The top performers in our review are the Garmin Nuvi 2589. the Gold Award winner; the TomTom GO 500. the Silver Award winner; and the Magellan SmartGPS. the Bronze Award winner. Here s more on choosing a product to meet your needs, along with detail on how we arrived at our ranking of 10 products.

Navigation GPS units are small, portable devices that can give you accurate, specific directions, even in areas without cell service. They are vastly superior to smartphone apps because they don’t use data or tax your smartphone’s battery.

You type in or, in some premium models, speak your destination and the device gives you turn-by-turn directions. It also displays information such as your current speed and the time and distance remaining until you reach your destination.

They attach via a suction cup to your windshield or dashboard and get power from a cigarette lighter adapter. Unlike with permanent navigation GPS units, you can simply unplug a portable GPS and move it from car to car.

In contrast to a smartphone navigation app, you don’t have to be in an area with cell service in order to get turn-by-turn directions from a navigation GPS. This is because these units have maps in their memories and get their location information directly from GPS satellites, which have better coverage than cell phone providers do.

Navigation GPS: Essential Features

Every unit that we reviewed comes preloaded with maps of the United States. They also have micro-SD card slots into which you can insert additional map cards. This means that if you plan to travel abroad, you can buy a map of that country, load it onto a micro-SD card and insert it into your GPS.

It’s important that you look for a GPS with lifetime map updates. This means that every year or so, you can go on the manufacturer’s website and update your maps to reflect any changes. Automatic reroute is an essential feature found on every decent car GPS. If you take a wrong turn, the unit should recalculate your route based on your updated location.

A speed limit indicator is another important feature. The device tells you not only the speed you’re traveling at, but also the speed limit of the road you’re on. This can help you avoid speeding tickets caused by not knowing the speed limit of the road you’re on, such as one in an unfamiliar location. You’ll also want to make sure your GPS has a built-in battery so it can work even when unplugged.

Navigation GPS: Premium Features

The best navigation GPS units have a host of features that, while not necessary, greatly enhance your navigation experience. The most important of these is voice-activated navigation. This is one of the biggest advantages smartphones have historically had over dedicated GPS units, because it’s much quicker than typing in a destination. Several models we reviewed have this feature.

3D maps are an especially helpful feature if you frequently drive in cities. Tall buildings, bridges and other tall objects are modeled in three dimensions. This makes them much easier to recognize than they are on a traditional two-dimensional map. All Garmin Nuvi units have 3D maps, and Magellan and TomTom also offer them on select models.

Another premium feature that you should look for is a built-in traffic receiver. This enables you to check traffic conditions without having to consult your smartphone. A capacitive touchscreen is another feature that is good to have, because it enables you to make pinch-to-zoom gestures, just as you would on your smartphone, an ability you don’t get with resistive touchscreens.

The Verdict; Our Recommendations:

The Garmin Nuvi 2589LMT is the best car GPS on the market. It has every feature that you should look for in a GPS, and Garmin has the best customer service in the industry.

The TomTom GO 500 is a close runner-up, the lack of a built-in traffic receiver being its only real weakness, and it can still receive traffic updates through a dedicated smartphone app. It’s a bit cheaper than the Nuvi, too.

The Magellan SmartGPS 5390 is our third choice. Its feature list is virtually identical to the TomTom’s, and its screen has a higher resolution. However, Magellan’s customer service is not as good as TomTom’s or Garmin’s.

If you’re on a strict budget, the TomTom GO 50 is the auto GPS for you. It’s on par with the most affordable units on the market, and it includes lifetime map updates. It has all of the essentials that we look for, but it lacks the premium features that differentiate the best car GPS units from the competition.

Everyone uses maps, but some people use paper maps, some use dedicated GPS units, and some use their smartphones. Dedicated GPS units are easily the best choice, because they work almost anywhere and, unlike paper maps, they can be updated. Is This the Best Search Engine Ever for New & Used Cars?

Wise Bread Picks

The site is one I found quite by accident. I’m not in the market for a used car, I was actually looking for a quote from Bill Shakespeare’s The Tempest and stumbled upon this gem. Ahh, I love the Internet. The site is called AutoTempest.com. It’s only in Beta right now, but the results are awesome!

In the past, when I was searching for a used car, I would bring up the usual suspects cars.com, kbb.com, edmunds.com. With three windows or tabs open, I would flick between them all looking for the best price, the lowest miles, and the best financing option available.

That was time-consuming and a hassle. But I never thought any more about it until I started pushing the buttons of this new site. (It’s like Kayak.com but for new and used cars.) As regular Wise Bread readers know, I’m a huge fan of sites and gadgets that save you time and money. Put a check mark next to both of those categories for AutoTempest.com.

The interface is simple enough. Enter the make and model of the car you’re looking for, along with the location, year, price and mileage. Sure, those are the usual features, but AutoTempest goes a little further.

With the advanced search, you can add-in transmission, body style, seller type, and even choose to search collector or niche sites.

After your data is input, you hit search. And then you’re greeted with the results from around seven different auto-buying websites. One includes craigslist, and when you get to that page the results will be further chopped down into areas in your state. You know what they say, location is everything.

I’d like to point out, as always, that this is not a paid endorsement or even one that was requested. When I find services or products I genuinely like or enjoy, I think Wise Bread readers will as well. And that’s why I’m passing this on to you.

As the site is in Beta, it’s also a great chance to kick the tires (ouch, no pun intended) and let the maker’s of AutoTempest know what you think of the site. what is working, and what isn’t. Hopefully, it will help them create a more robust option for the official launch.

So there you have it. If you’re looking for a new motor, try it out. I hope it saves you a bunch of time and money on your next vehicle. I know I’ll be using it to find mine.

How to Lease a Car and Get the Best Deal

Tips

  • Over time, the cost of leasing several cars will likely exceed the purchase price of a new or used car.
  • Don’t tell a car dealer you plan to lease until after you’ve negotiated the car’s purchase price.
  • Beware salespeople who focus only on your monthly payment will be. Stay aware of the total price you’ll pay, including down payment and monthly bills.
  • Related How-Tos

    Feedback

A car lease lets you drive a new vehicle without paying a large sum of cash or taking out a loan.

To lease a car, you simply make a small down payment less than the typical 20% of a car s value you d pay to buy followed by monthly payments for the term of the lease. When the term expires, you return the car.

Leasing a car has some drawbacks, however. Among them:

    • You don’t own the car when your lease expires. You essentially rent, not buy, the car. So you don’t have equity in the car to use toward the purchase of another vehicle.

    • Over time, say 10 years, the cost of leasing several cars will likely exceed the purchase price of a new or used car.

    • Lease terms can carry steep penalties. You may have to pay penalties if:

-You exceed the number of miles in your lease contract.

    – You fail to keep the interior and exterior of the car in good condition.

    – You drive the car hard and inflict significant wear and tear on the car’s performance and appearance.

    – You want to return the car before your contract expires.

Does a lease make sense for you?

Leasing is more beneficial than buying when you:

    • Don’t have the cash to buy the car.

    • Want to drive a vehicle that’s out of your purchase price range.

    • Won’t likely exceed the mileage cap in a contract—usually between 10,000 and 15,000 miles per year.

    • Can take good care of the car’s exterior and interior, paying particular attention to avoid nicks, spills and other cosmetic damage.

    • Expect to lease another car when your vehicle’s current contract expires.

Exceeding the mileage limits on your lease can cost you 10 to 15 cents per mile. The dealer will inspect your car just before the lease expires, and you ll also be charged for excessive wear and tear.

    How to Lease

Leasing a car is less complicated than buying one. But to get the best deal on the car you want, you must still follow these steps:

Step 1. Choose a type — What kind of car do you want? Better yet, what car do you need? A convertible? A sedan? An SUV?

Step 2. Pick your models — Make a list of car types in your price range. You can reduce non-lease costs by including models with favorable gas mileage, high dependability, top safety features and low insurance premiums (ask your auto insurance agent for a list of vehicles that fit the bill).

Step 3. Take a test drive — Once you’ve narrowed your list to a few models, take each car for a test drive. Pay particular attention to comfort, visibility, braking, steering, internal noise and shock-absorption. At this stage, don’t yet mention you intend to lease (more on this in Step 6).

Step 4. Ask about safety — During your test drive, ask the salesperson whether the vehicle comes with anti-lock brake systems (ABS), electronic stability control (ESC) and head-protecting side air bags. All are valuable safety features.

Step 5. Compare lease deals — When you return home from the dealer, calculate the lease deals on offer and figure out how much you can afford to pay monthly.

Step 6. Talk price first — Once you’re ready to return to a dealership to strike a deal, don’t tell the dealer you plan to lease until after you’ve negotiated a purchase price. Most people who lease are unaware that their monthly payments will be based on the final agreed-upon price.

Step 7. Negotiate up — Negotiate the final price of the vehicle up from the rock-bottom cost to the dealership. You can find out what new cars cost a dealer for $14 per vehicle at Consumer Reports. Your monthly payments will be based on the price you and the salesperson settle on. That price will fall somewhere between the dealer’s wholesale price and the manufacturer s suggested retail price.

Step 8. Beware of gab — Your salesperson may try to push you toward closing the deal by focusing on the relatively low amount you’ll have to pay each month. This, however, will add to the total amount you ll pay.

Step 9. Paying the Lease — The larger your initial down payment, the lower your monthly tab will be. As with any bill, you ll face penalties if you fail to make payments on time. Turning in your leased car early, before the loan term ends will typically result in a penalty—unless you are trading in the car for another leased or purchased car.

Three Kings of the Denver Auto Show

This beauty looks too good to be true and so far it isn t!

The 2014 Denver Auto Show is well under way and we can fairly well assert there is something to interest darn near anyone. In our estimation, their specific automobiles are the most interesting or compelling to the confirmed auto aficionado.

For our money, the most exciting of these new vehicles is the recently released Jaguar F-Type Coupe that come in three trim levels and is a completely different animal that its convertible sibling, which we frankly love unabashedly.

During the unveiling during the media hours Wednesday, Jack Terhar Jr. president of Sill-Terhar Motors told of his apprehension at meeting Ratan Tata, CEO of Tata Motors, under whose umbrella Jaguar now rests.

Despite his uneasiness, Terhar found the owner of one of the largest automotive manufacturing groups in the world to be down to earth, perceptive and very personable, despite the cultural differences expected in an executive from India.

“I hear with my ears, but listen with my heart,” he quoted Tata as stating.

He continued to explain how when the design of the Jaguar F-Type Coupe was proposed, entire cadres of engineers told him graphically, complete with PowerPoint presentations that it simply couldn’t be done.

“I didn’t ask you to do this,” Tata told them. The dealers want it, so do it!”

Interestingly, the coupe was designed before the convertible, but due to America’s love affair with the roadster, (in which this writer is a card carrying acolyte) the open-air model was released first.

By the way, the Jaguar F-Type Coupe R’s supercharged V8 engine develops 550 horsepower and 502 ft-lb. of torque.

For those whose need for speed exceeds even those lofty levels, the new Nissan GT-R may fill the bill. This 600-horsepower beauty is one of the fastest of all supercars and has proved it in annual drag races with the top Mercedes, BMW, Porsche, Maserati and other manufacturers advanced performance models.

The new model has twin turbochargers that make the carbon fiber front fascia and even the LED daytime driving lights and headlamps hard to see at top speed. The Carbon fiber is also used for the trunk lid and all these parts have a red and gold flake sheen that scintillates as the supercar streaks by in a blur.

Bose active noise cancelation keeps the deep-throated growl of the bodacious engine outside the car where it belongs – not in the cabin.

One of the coolest aspects of this phenomenal car is the fact that only four Nissan technicians are qualified to build the GT-R engine and each model has a plaque on the front with the signature of the engineer that built that engine. Street and track specific models range from $111K to $115K. Sweet dreams are made of these, but you need an account in the Cayman Islands to run with these diamond dogs.

By far the most intriguing concept car at this year’s show is the Kia GT4 Stinger Concept. This beautiful prototype is nowhere near production or even the planning stage but the company literature admits all the manufacturers vehicles evolved from one concept or another, leaving hope alive that something like this might eventually see the light of the moon.

While in this vicinity of the show, we chanced across the 2015 Kia K-900 V8 sedan that sports a 5-liter V8 engine and 8-speed automatic transmission for a whopping $66,400. Who knew Kia had luxury sedan ambitions and is this really the time to be pushing 15 to 23 mpg vehicles with the looming advent of the rigid CAFE standards?

Other highlights include a Buick 1.4-liter turbocharged DOHC inline 4-cylinder engine naked on a stand, resplendent in its chrome visage.

Then there’s the cutaway of a Subaru Forester so you can see the construction of the body, and new truck offering from Chevy, Ford, Ram and Toyota.

There’s an exhibit on the relative economy and growing availability of Compress Natural Gas vehicles and lots of information on home fueling, public outlets and other aspects of this clean-burning, cheaper fuel option. It is worthy of note that Colorado is a Natural Gas exporting state, a factor that removes transportation costs from the transportation equation.

For those who want a more interactive experience, there an outrageous video game simulator of a racing a Mustang on a track that moves you up, down and around as you steer, accelerate and brake. The Jeep has their offroad experience where you can ride or drive over a thrilling and undulating course as Jeep personnel explain the new features of the legendary Jeep Wrangler.

The Denver Auto Show continues from 10 am to 10 pm April 11 12, plus 10 am to 6 pm. It’s well worth the price of admission if you’re are planning to buy a car anytime soon or just want to keep up with an industry in a phenomenal phase of change.

Different choices of loans for buying any car.

Shopping around is the best way to find the best rate auto loan. We made it easy for you to shop around at one place and save time. You have to do some research to find out which source suits you and which has many advantages.

No Hassle Loan Pre-Approval in 2 min. Good, Bad or No Credit.

1. Banks.

You have to fill out some documents and if your documentation is complete you may get the loan approved and the bank will issue check in a shorter time. As banks are very competitive, you may get the best quote for your auto loan. But, you have to commute to the bank and you will have to do lot of paper work.

2. Credit Unions.

The credit unions collect money from members and offer various products like loans to the members. Its main goal is service rather than profitability. But, it is not a charity. If you are a member of a credit union then it is a good place to research for auto loan because the Credit Union’s APR (Annual Percentage Rate) is lower than other sources of auto loans. This along with shorter repayment terms will lower the over all cost of the car provided that you can afford higher monthly payments. You can get approval with a check faster than other lenders. You should remember that the profits earned by the Credit Union are shared by all the members.

They may also offer auto warranty and insurance.

4. Online Lenders.

If you are the first time car buyer, as in the case of a college student, immigrant or a teenager, online loan is preferable to other sources as you do not have the credit history. Generally, online lending APR is 1 or 2 is lower than that offered by other auto dealers. Also, in the case of most online lenders the APR is fixed. This is beneficial to you in the long term. There is no down payment. Unlike the banks and credit unions, there is no hassle of filling out forms. There are no fees charged for the loan. Also, you need not commute to bank, credit union or dealership company in order to apply for a loan. In the comfort of home, just sit before a PC with internet and fill out the form. The online loan form is easier to fill out than in the case of banks or credit unions. At the end of the online filling of the loan application form, by the click of a button you will know what your monthly payment will be and you will know whether it is within your budget. The online auto rates are competitive and at this stage it is up to you to decide to accept or reject the loan offer and you will get the reply via email within 2 days. The online loan process keeps postal expenses at the minimum. If you have credit score less than 600, there are some online lenders who may consider you for a loan with some conditions imposed on you.

Lots of things can affect your rates. Shop around and compare.

Feb 9, 2014 at 8:15PM

Whether you’re in the market for your first car — and your first insurance policy — or you’ve been insured for years and are considering a change, trying to compare auto insurance quotes can be a frustrating process. What kind of coverage does your quote include? Will it change once you’ve input your driving record? Are you in for any unpleasant surprises?

If you’re looking for a quick and easy way to compare car insurance quotes online, try our Car Insurance Comparison Tool. It offers the opportunity to adjust your insurance quotes based on a number of variables, including how and how often you use your car, and who’ll be driving it. While you can’t control all of the factors that affect your premiums, you can do your research and pick the best company for you, based on your driving habits and demographics.

Who will be driving your car?

As anyone who’s ever tried to insure a teen driver knows, the process will make your auto insurance quotes will go through the roof. Car insurance rates can be much higher for older drivers as well. However, some car insurance companies provide ways to offset the cost of insuring both younger and older drivers.

State Farm: Those insuring younger drivers might want to consider State Farm. The insurer provides a discount of up to 25% for full-time students under 25 with good grades. If academics aren’t your young driver’s strength, he can still save 15% if he’s under 25, has completed an approved Steer Clear course, and has had a clean driving record for at least three years.

AARP/The Hartford: On top of the discount you get for being an AARP member, you can get an additional discount — good for three years — for completing a safe driving course. Drivers under 21 who’ve completed a safe driving course, or students under 25 who maintain good grades, are also eligible for discounts.

Allstate: Older drivers might want to go with Allstate, though the insurer offers discounts at both ends of the age spectrum. If you’re at least 55 and retired, you can save up to 10% on your premiums, without taking a qualifying course. If you’re under 25, single, and a full-time student with a solid academic record, you could save up to 20%. Younger drivers could save up to 10% for completing the teenSMART program.

Esurance: Older and younger drivers both have reasons to choose Esurance. Those 50 and over — depending on their state — can get up to a 10% discount for three years if they’ve completed a safe driving course. Full-time students under 25 with a 3.0 GPA or higher can also get a 10% discount.

Liberty Mutual: Full-time students, new graduates, and new retirees all qualify for discounts, depending on their residency and other factors.

How will you use your car?

While many Americans use their cars to commute between work or school and home, many also work from home or commute via public transit, using their cars mostly for convenience. The purpose for which you use your car can definitely affect your insurance rates. Most companies take it into account when preparing your quote, and some offer additional discounts.

State Farm: Like many other insurance companies, State Farm now allows drivers to collect and share information about their driving habits through their Drive Safe Save Program. If you’re paying too much for the amount you drive, this could lead to a reduction in your rates, but if you have any concerns about your driving, consider what else State Farm might learn about you before signing up.

Allstate: If you have a vehicle you use mostly for farm or ranch work, you’ll save 10% on its premiums with Allstate.

How much coverage do you need?

With a few exceptions, all states require drivers to have some auto insurance coverage, but whether or not you purchase a comprehensive plan, or other optional add-ons, is up to you. If you’re insured with Esurance, you could save money by electing not to use its roadside assistance program. Drivers in most states who choose another service — like AAA — can save up to 5% on their premium.

Do you have a good driving record?

It should come as no surprise that your driving history — from speeding tickets to accidents — can affect your premiums quite a bit. While making a few mistakes on the road can cost you, maintaining a clear driving record can also save you money.

State Farm: If you’ve gone three years without an incident behind the wheel, you can save up to 10% with State Farm.

Allstate: Longtime safe drivers will get the maximum discount with Allstate. Those who’ve gone three years without a moving violation or at-fault accident will save 22%. After five years, they’ll save 35%.

Esurance: Gone five years without an at-fault accident claim or a DUI conviction? You can save 10%-25% off your Esurance premium. However, you must have switched to Esurance from another carrier to qualify.

Conclusion

Remember: Car insurance quotes aren’t set in stone. After you run a car insurance comparison online, be sure to call the companies that seem to offer the best deals and tell them the specifics of your situation. The sales representative can be more precise about your prospective premium, including any additional discounts. It takes time, but if you put in the work — looking for auto insurance quotes online and following up — you’ll be able to maximize your savings, while staying protected on the road.
