#PASS is an acronym for Post Abortion Stress Syndrome. PASS is an unofficial name, because it is not officially recognized by the medical community yet. Some sections believe in PASS, others do not. Until enough studies have been done to confirm it’s ‘existence’, the syndrome is still ‘unofficial’. This does not mean it does not exist! For more details on PASS, and why it’s not “officially recognized” yet, see the following sections:

  • Stages, Symptoms FAQs about PASS

After an abortion, how do you recover? How do you deal with the intense feelings of sadness and grief that some women feel? What do you do if you have even more serious complications after an abortion? You’re not alone, and help is available! Post Abortion Stress Syndrome (PASS) is the name for a condition that can affect women after an abortion. Not every woman who has an abortion is affected by it. Some women who have abortions feel peaceful about their decision beforehand, relieved afterwards, and then live the rest of their lives with no regrets. Other women may have a different experience, and may have a more difficult time recovering after an abortion. When a woman has an abortion, it’s possible that the woman will have some normal feelings of grief, guilt and loss. If the feelings become severe, or persist for a long period of time, she may be suffering from Post Abortion Stress Syndrome (PASS). “PASS” is different from ‘normal feelings’ of loss and depression immediately following an abortion. How is it different? When is it PASS and not just ‘normal feelings’?
When the reactions and feelings in the first 3 months following an abortion are severe, causing such problems as:

  • Self-harm, strong suicidal thoughts or suicide attempts
  • Increase in dangerous and/or unhealthy activities (alcohol/drug abuse, anorexia/bulimia, compulsive over-eating, cutting, casual and indifferent sex and other inappropriate risk-taking behaviors)
  • Depression that is stronger than just ‘a little sadness or the blues’
  • Inability to perform normal self-care activities
  • Inability to function normally in her job or in school
  • Inability to take care of or relate to her existing children or function normally in her other relationships (i.e. with a spouse, partner, other family member or friends)
  • A desire to immediately get pregnant and ‘replace’ the baby that was aborted, even when all the circumstances that led her to ‘choose abortion’ the first time are still in place.

So having a severe reaction immediately after an abortion can be classified as “PASS” and not just ‘normal feelings’. What can also be described as PASS is when a woman has the problems listed above, and they continue after the abortion for months, and sometimes years.
Other PASS problems could include short and/or long term problems with:

  • emotions, and dealing with emotional issues
  • struggles with depression
  • continued suicidal thoughts or attempts
  • anxiety and panic disorder
  • addictions of all kinds
  • difficulty sleeping and sleeping problems
  • disturbing dreams and/or nightmares
  • problems with phobias, or increase in severity of existing phobias
  • eating disorders
  • “replacement baby” syndrome
  • repeated unplanned pregnancies with additional abortions
  • repeated unplanned pregnancies carried to term
  • “atonement marriage”, where the woman marries the partner from the abortion, to help justify the abortion
  • trouble with relationships and dealing with partners
  • distress at the sight of other pregnant women, other people’s babies and children
  • inability to deal with or socialize with other pregnant women, other people’s babies and children
  • codependence and inability to make decisions easily
  • problems with severe and disproportionate anger
  • work and school problems (unable to function normally)
  • problems bonding with and caring for existing children or new babies
  • distress and problems with later pregnancy
  • added emotional issues and problems when dealing with future infertility or other physical complications resulting from the abortion.
  • unhealthy obsession with excelling at work or school, to justify the abortion

  • My “PMDD real and PASS not?” article

Some PASS problems can be severely disruptive to a woman’s life, and PASS can trouble her for months and even years after her abortion. The good news is that women can recover from PASS, can learn to heal from their abortion, and can go on to have happy, healthy productive lives. Women are usually afraid or embarrassed to even admit to having an abortion, let alone talk to anyone else about problems she might be having. Women are encouraged to think it is ‘their fault’ if they have trouble after an abortion, and that the abortion itself had nothing to do with how she feels, and that PASS is just some ‘anti-choice myth’.

It’s interesting how if a man goes off to a war, and comes back with “PTSS” (Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome), we don’t ‘blame the man’, and ‘protect’ the war, we admit it was the war that caused PTSS. We don’t refuse to help the man, and belittle him or invalidate his pain by saying he had ‘previous psychological problems’, or other issues in his life that caused the PTSS, and we don’t tell him that what he is struggling with “doesn’t exist” – we admit it was the whole stress and experience of war, and we help him, support him, allow him a name for his experience and treat him to help him recover. Yet when a woman has an abortion, and is traumatized by the whole experience, and develops “PASS” (Post Abortion Stress Syndrome), people are quick to ‘blame the woman’, and “protect abortion”, and claim there’s no way the abortion could have caused this, the woman must have had pre-existing problems, and it’s ‘her fault’ she is suffering. And the woman is left alone to suffer, with no help, treatment, support or a name for her experience. The fierce war between people who have differing views on the legality of abortion has turned into a war that is hurting women, as people go out of their way to minimize women’s problems after an abortion, and “blame the woman” for any trouble she is having. I am in the middle with my views, as I believe that abortion should remain legal and safe, and that every woman has the right to make her own choices concerning her body and her life. However, people need to know that Post Abortion Stress Syndrome is a real medical issue, and can cause serious emotional or physical complications after an abortion.

The Business PhD

While an MBA or business administration degree can offer extensive training, they are becoming more and more common. Earning a doctorate in business can help you get ahead of the competition and land a high paying business or teaching job. Many CEO’s today have a business administration doctorate degree, but there is also a more traditional PhD program available in business as well. Here are the differences in the two degrees and the starting salaries in business PhD holders arenas.

Doctor of Philosophy in Organization and Management. This degree PhD program in business focus intensively on preparing candidates to conduct highly specialized scholarly research. They focus on the development of new theory in management, economics and related fields. Most holders of a business PhD become faculty at Business schools. An Associate Professor at a Business School can expect a starting salary of about $110,000 a year, with a full professor eventually earning closer to $150,000 a year.

Doctor of Business Administration (which is not a PhD, but a DBA degree) programs focus on the application of theory rather than on the development of new theory. While also intended to prepare graduates for academic careers, the DBA, by virtue of its focus on application of theory, has more practical application in managerial settings than the PhD and can therefore has a much higher earning potential in the business world. Most CEO’s have beginning salaries in the range of $140,000, with a nearly unlimited earning potential—depending on the success of the corporation and experience.

The Consumer Expenditure Surveys (CE) program provides data on expenditures, income, and demographic characteristics of consumers in the United States. The CE program provides these data in tables. databases. news releases. reports. and public-use microdata files.

CE data are collected by the Census Bureau for BLS in two surveys, the Interview Survey for major and/or recurring items and the Diary Survey for more minor or frequently purchased items. CE data are primarily used to revise the relative importance of goods and services in the market basket of the Consumer Price Index. The CE is the only Federal household survey to provide information on the complete range of consumers’ expenditures and incomes, as well as the characteristics of those consumers. Researchers and government agencies also use CE data to study consumers’ spending habits and trends. Here is an overview of the CE program and its methods .

To be notified when new datasets become available, sign up for CE updates. The menu will prompt you to select Consumer Expenditures. If you have comments or questions about this page and its contents, contact us.

Introduction to CE Data Products

What kind of data do you need?

CE provides you its data in five formats:

  • News releases and reports
These publications provide analysis of CE data and overviews of major spending trends.
You do not need statistical software to use these publications. They are available in two formats: News releases and reports .
  • Tables of major expenditures, incomes, and demographic characteristics
These products provide data by region, income categories, age, race, education, occupation, or other household characteristics. In addition, CE provides tables that cross tabulate variables of interest by two characteristics, for example age and income.

You do not need statistical software to use these tables. They are available in two formats: Published tables or a database.

  • Tables of detailed expenditure, incomes, and demographic characteristics
Provide additional expenditure detail and related reliability measures, such as standard error.

You need to take into account that some data points may be subject to significant sampling error causing a coefficient of variation of over 25 percent and thus should be used with caution. These tables are available on the experimental research tables page or upon request from CE.

  • Public-use Microdata (PUMD) with edited survey responses
The PUMD contain edited data derived from the survey instruments. The data have been edited to meet strict confidentiality requirements set in place by BLS and the Census Disclosure Review Board. The PUMD include an extensive list of variables that allow in-depth analysis. CE staff edit these data in two main ways:
    • Anonymizes the data to protect the respondents’ identities.
    • Imputes components that respondents did not report in sufficient detail or were unwilling to share. These include types of income and income taxes.

You may need to use PUMD with caution because some data points may have a large coefficient of variation and you should be proficient with a statistical software package, such as SAS or R to use these files.

They are available on the PUMD data page. To get started, you may want to explore the data availability with the NEW Interactive CE Visualization Tool. and the methodology with the Getting Started Guide .

  • Data files with unedited survey responses
This product contains the same information as the Public-use Microdata files (PUMD) except that the confidentiality measures to protect respondents’ identities have not been applied. Thus, these data provide slightly more demographic, income, and expenditure data. You have to come to the BLS national office to use this product.

You may need to use these data files with caution because some data points may have a large coefficient of variation and you should be proficient with a statistical software package, such as SAS or R to use these files.

In addition, accessing these files is more involved than accessing the above alternatives. For onsite access at the BLS national office, you need to fulfill the following requirements: Be affiliated with a government agency, academic institution, or nonprofit organization, be a U.S. citizen or legal resident, be able to fund travel to Washington D.C. demonstrate to BLS that your research is in the public’s interest and will be publically available, and receive clearance from both BLS and the U.S. Census Bureau to access the unedited data (Title 13). The process to access these files normally takes at least six months, and may take longer. For more information about onsite access, see the BLS restricted data access page.

  • Latest CE News Releases

Average expenditures per consumer unit for July 2015 through June 2016 were up 2.3 percent compared with the July 2014 through June 2015 midyear average. Average incomes also increased, up 6.3 percent.

    Property Survey Cost

A property or land survey determines the boundary lines and accurate measurements of a specific parcel, lot or acreage. The process typically involves researching official records and doing field work on the property. A land survey may be required or desired when buying or selling property, building a fence or a house addition, subdividing a property, splitting a lot, or obtaining or refinancing a mortgage. Many local building or fence permits require a boundary survey, and many lending institutions require a current detailed land survey to reveal any problems with boundary lines, easements and encroachments.

    • Many surveyors charge $50-$220 or more an hour, depending on the type of work performed and the qualifications of the person doing the work. For example, Homestead Land Surveying [1 ] in California charges $55 an hour for the services of a junior survey technician, $95 an hour for a senior technician, $135 an hour for the principal land surveyor, $150 an hour for a two-person field crew and $220 an hour for a three-person field crew. GJB Engineering [2 ] in Virginia charges $50 an hour for administrative work, $85 an hour for a surveying draftsman, $100 an hour for a technician, $150 an hour for a professional surveyor and $140 an hour for a two-person surveying crew.
    • Total costs depend on the type and complexity of survey. A developer building new houses might have surveys done of the entire development then sell a copy of a specific parcel survey to the buyer of that lot for $300-$500. A typical residential lot survey might cost $300-$1,000 depending on local rates and the size and type of parcel; placing permanent stone or metal boundary markers may be optional at $100-$300 each. For example, Texas Land Title Surveyors [3 ] estimates a residential land title survey including staking property corners at $350, and a topographic survey for beach front construction at $450. Ramsey Surveying [4 ] in Arkansas estimates a typical lot survey for less than a half acre at $500 in subdivisions newer than 1970 and $750 for subdivisions older than 1950, with boundary surveys on up to 10 acres starting at $750-$850, and 10-20 acre parcels at $1,750 or more.
    • The cost of a land survey is based on several factors, including the parcel size and accessibility (distance to site and difficulty surveying all lines and corners); availability of information and records; existing evidence on the property (markers from previous surveys); time of year and weather conditions; complexity (a property described as part of a one-mile section may legally require surveying the entire section); improvements like houses, garages, fences or pavement; and more. LandSurveyor.us lists factors affecting the cost of a land survey.

Related articles: Building a Custom Home. Home Addition. Family Room Addition. Fence

    What should be included:

    • Provide as much information as possible, including legal documents or plans for the property, any available details on boundary line and corner locations, and any disputes about these lines or corners. Typically, the final product will be a signed, sealed and certified map of the property surveyed, showing what was surveyed and, depending on the type of survey, information like which corners were found or marked, improvements on the property and any encroachments across the boundaries. Link Field Services in Texas provides an overview.
    • There are many different land surveys. A subdivision survey is needed when subdividing a property and must follow local government regulations. A boundary survey locates the corners, lines and easements for a given parcel. LandSurveyor.us describes types of land surveys and lists common misconceptions and myths.
    • In addition to traditional transit and tape, modern surveyors also use electronic distance and angle measuring equipment, including GPS for greater accuracy and efficiency on some types of surveys. Often a surveyor spends more time researching records than viewing and measuring the property. Link Field Services in Texas gives step-by-step examples of the tasks and manpower needed for an average boundary survey of 20 rural acres and an average residential subdivision lot survey.
    • A land surveyor must be licensed by the state; most states require a four-year degree in surveying or a related science, plus 4-8 years working under the direct supervision of a licensed surveyor.

    Discounts:

    • If a previous survey was done recently and the same surveyor is available, that surveyor might recertify the original survey 25%-50% of the cost of doing a new land survey.

    Shopping for a property survey:

    • Prices vary significantly; get several estimates. The state associations [5 ] of the National Association of Professional Surveyors typically provide referrals.
    • The surveyor should provide a written agreement or contract detailing what will be surveyed, the type of survey, the agreed-upon fee and when the final survey will be delivered.

Type of Survey: Residential – 1940s

The cost of the survey really depends upon how old the lot is, what types of land markers are still visible, and what county/cities plans are available they may or may not dispute the lines. We lived in a home that was built in the 1940s and the clerk’s office had varied plans that did not make any sense concerning our boundaries between our two neighbors. We were lucky that we had two boundary marks cites in pervious plans. Basically, the surveyor not only maps your area but there can be a lot of research behind the scenes that also need to be done. That can also take several hours. Remember- you want to pay to have it done right the first time!!

Average New and Used Auto Loan Rates

Every month, HSH collects the latest information on new and used auto loan rates from lenders in dozens of metropolitan areas around the US. The sampling of averages listed here includes only a few of the areas we survey. HSH typically surveys hundreds of lenders in a given month.

National data, broken out into 36 month, 48 month and 60 month series of averages are available at low cost, including historical information. Please call for more information. Six-month graphs of national average auto loan rates can be found on our Statistical Release page.

This widget requires JavaScript to run. Visit Site for more.

HSH also conducts a similar survey for other types of consumer loans — including home equity loans and lines of credit .

Lending institutions and other market professionals can buy this data for their own use.

    Auto News and Notes:

Fed trimmed short-term rates, and has kept them low. auto borrowers see some benefit.

While there isn’t a one-for-one lockstep relationship with moves in the Federal Funds Rate, changes in that short-term cost of money certainly influence the rates for auto loans.

The Federal Reserve finished lowering the Federal Funds rate to present levels back in late 2008. Once that benchmark hit rock bottom, rates for auto loans drifted downward in 2009, then eased somewhat more quickly in 2010. The decline in rates was more substantial in 2011 and 2012; during that time, banks became stronger and more willing to lend and auto sales revived. Over the last couple of years, the downtrend for rates has continued, although at a slowing pace. Although average new and used auto rates eased about three-quarters of a percentage point over that time, last year contributed less than half of the total decline.

It’s a common misconception that Fed moves have a lockstep effect on other kinds of loan rates. Short-term loan rates are affected by a lower Federal Funds rate to a degree, but most of these loans are largely still funded by locally-gathered deposits; those local deposits — in the form of CDs, Passbooks and other time deposits — are the lender’s “cost of obtaining funds”.

Those “cost of obtaining funds” (aka ‘cost of funds’) represent the interest rates paid to you for allowing your deposited money to be used by the lender. Now, lenders need to attract your deposit money, so they compete against other lenders by paying as high a rate as needed to attract you and still lend it out profitably. However, paying high rates for deposits means that the lender must charge higher rates for loans in order to preserve profitability. and if the rates are too high, you’ll borrow somewhere else, and they’ll make no profits at all.

With bank balance sheets slowly healing, and with continued improvement in the secondary market for auto loans, banks have been becoming more active in making these loans both for their books as well as for sale. The Fed’s moves of the past few years have helped to lower the cost of money in open markets, and deposit rates have slipped as a result.

In turn, as the lender’s “cost of funds” slowly decreases, the interest rates being charged on short-term loans should decrease, too. After all, the lender needs to attract borrowers as well as depositors in order to make money. However, lenders are still recovering from the losses caused by the recession, and remain wary of the risks of making loans, so underwriting standards are still tight. These higher risks can mean making fewer loans, and loans that are made need to be profitable enough to help cover losses from older loans. As such, while some lenders will lower lending rates quickly in order to help attract new borrowers, some lenders will drift their rates downward more slowly and steadily, preserving wider profit margins. This drifting of rates is one of the reasons that Federal Reserve moves can take anywhere from six months to a year to be fully realized in the economy. It also means that loan rates for automobiles are likely to trend downward only mildly in the months ahead, if at all.
