New Study Reveals States With Lowest Auto Loan Rates

LOS ANGELES A new study by GoBankingRates.com says the U.S. states with the lowest average auto loan rates are Michigan, Oregon and Alaska. The states with the highest average rates are Rhode Island, Connecticut and New Jersey.

The study found that the average interest rate nationwide for a loan on a new vehicle is 3.65 percent. In general, states on the West Coast have the lowest overall rates, while the Northeast has the most states with rates of 4.01 percent or higher.

GoBankingRates.com partnered with Informa Research Services to gather online data from more than 4,000 U.S. banks and credit unions. The study looked at the base interest rates for new-car loans as of July 24, 2013, for terms of 36 months, 48 months and 60 months, then averaged the findings from each state to arrive at the rankings.

Michigan, the traditional home of the U.S. auto industry, turned out to have the lowest statewide average: 3.03 percent. The best rates in Michigan were 1.49 percent for 36 months, 1.49 percent for 48 months and 1.75 percent for 60 months.

Oregon and Alaska each averaged 3.04 percent, according to the study. Rounding out the top 10 were New Hampshire, South Carolina, Vermont, Oklahoma, Utah, Washington and North Carolina, with rates ranging from 3.08 percent to 3.31 percent.

The worst rates were found in Rhode Island, which averaged 5.11 percent. Other bottom-10 results included Connecticut, New Jersey, Massachusetts, Louisiana, West Virginia, Delaware, Mississippi, Pennsylvania and the District of Columbia, with rates from 4.82 percent to 3.95 percent.

Although the study makes for interesting reading, rates within each state vary widely, so the compiled averages don’t tell consumers the whole story. A car shopper in Rhode Island, the state with the worst average, may find a local financial institution offering a rate equal to or better than the lowest one in Michigan, which had the best average.

As GoBankingRates.com advises, “When it comes to affordable financing, there are always great options available on the local level, and it’s up to the borrower to find them.”

In a recovering economy it’s particularly important to shop around for the best rate. For some time, many automakers have helped keep interest rates low through subsidies and incentives that increased sales. As the economy improves, says GoBankingRates.com, interest rates are on the rise.

But for now, the site notes, “car buyers continue to enjoy some of the lowest financing options available.” It just takes diligent comparison shopping to root out the best deals.

Edmunds says: As always, it pays to do your homework before walking into a lender’s office or car dealership.

Here are all the key documents you need to get involved in one of the most exciting initiatives we have undertaken in recent years – the JMIC Event Case Study Program. This program has been developed in order to identify and profile events that demonstrate the kinds of broader output values associated with meetings, conventions or exhibitions thinks like economic, business, professional, academic and community benefits that such events create.

In participating in this program you will not only be helping generate important documentation that will benefit the industry as a whole but getting important profile for both your own organization and those whose events are profiled.

This program is being coordinated by the University of Technology Sydney (UTS), who have considerable experience in quantifying these kinds of values, in consultation with the members of the Academic Panel that has been assembled to support the program. As described in these materials, in order to qualify for inclusion in the study, these values may be of any type but must have been (or about to be) actually measured by the organizer and / or their partners in event delivery.

Early Childhood Education Graduate Programs

As an early childhood educator, you must support children’s social, emotional, and intellectual development. At Wheelock, a leader in the early childhood education field, you will learn how to create learning environments that respond to children’s interests and abilities. Our program coursework and field experiences prepare to work in highly diverse settings.

Students enter Wheelock’s Early Childhood Education programs with the commitment to promoting a multi-racial and multicultural society, and leave with the skills necessary to accomplish that goal. They learn to partner with families and community leaders to ensure the success and inclusion of all children, and to collaborate with community agencies to work in concert with ECE professionals to provide well-rounded services needed by children and families.

Early Childhood Education Master’s Programs at Wheelock

Wheelock is the only private higher education institution in Massachusetts to be accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) and also dually recognized by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC). Wheelock offers two Early Childhood Education graduate programs:

Master of Science in Early Childhood Education for Initial Licensure (PreK-2) – 37 credits

This program helps students develop and refine skills in curriculum design, observation and assessment, communication, collaboration, responding to diverse learning styles, and classroom management. The program emphasizes a commitment to working in a multi-racial and multicultural society, working partnership with families, fully integrating children with special needs into the learning environment, and collaboration with community members and agencies.

Students participate in two extensive practicum experiences. These total at least 200 hours in each practicum and encompass two semesters of student teaching experiences in early childhood settings: one in a kindergarten or a pre-kindergarten-level site and one in a grade 1-2 site. At least one of the practicum sites will include children with special needs. In some cases, students may use their current job as a placement opportunity.

This program can lead to Massachusetts Early Childhood Teacher of Students With or Without Disabilities Initial Licensure upon completion of the necessary state tests.

Master of Science in Care and Education in Early Childhood Settings (PreK-Kindergarten) – 30 credits

This program is designed for students who will work with young children (aged 2-8 years) in public, private, and parochial care and education settings as caregivers, classroom teachers, lead teachers, directors, and family liaison workers.

The Care and Education program has two different options: one for beginning early childhood education practitioners and one for experienced or continuing practitioners.

Beginning practitioners typically are students without an academic background in early education who want to pursue careers outside of a public school setting. At least one 300-hour placement in an appropriate setting is required, and you may choose to do an additional 100- to 300-hour practicum. Additionally, you can use your course experience to qualify for the Massachusetts Department of Early Education and Care (DEEC) lead teacher credential.

Continuing practitioners are students who want to increase their knowledge of early childhood education and may have already obtained an initial teaching license or have an academic background in early education. Students who have their initial license and complete this program may use their coursework in to advance an initial teacher license to the Professional level after teaching for three years. Continuing students who have not obtained an initial license may want o pursue careers in early childhood outside of the public school system. Those student can individually tailor their program to meet their specific needs and interests.

Signature Early Childhood Education Courses

(for all Wheelock Early Childhood Education Programs)

Racial and Cultural Identities (EDU 505): This course is distinctly different from the offerings of other schools because its focus is on the self rather than the other. It requires participants to consider their own social identity in terms of race, ethnicity, social class, gender, and citizenship.

Capstone Course (EDU 655/702): The Capstone Course requires that students prepare and present a portfolio of their learning to a committee of arts and sciences and education faculty members and practitioners.

Career Opportunities for Early Childhood Educators

Q: When can I enroll in these programs?
A: Students can enroll in the MS Care and Education program in the fall or summer semester. The preferred start time for MS Early Childhood Education program is the summer semester (June). This start term allows students to complete required coursework during the summer term and then begin a full-time internship in the fall. However, it is possible to begin in the fall semester. Those wishing to begin in the fall semester (September) will need to speak with a faculty member first. If allowed to enter in the fall, applicants should either have met with the Field Experience Office and arranged an internship for the fall, have received approval for a “self-placement,” or recognize that they may not be able to do their internship until the following fall semester.

Q: Do I need to be a full-time student to participate in this program?
A: Students in the MS Care and Education program may be full- or part-time. Students in the MS Early Childhood Education program may begin their course work on a part-time basis, but must enroll full-time during semesters in which the two practica are completed. Full-time MS Early Childhood Education students may complete the program in four semesters, and are strongly encouraged to begin in the summer. All students should meet with their advisors to develop a study plan, as there is a sequence of courses that must be maintained.

Q: Do I need experience working with children to qualify for admission to this program?
A: While preference is given to applicants who have experience working with children and families (especially in a group setting), previous experience is not required.

Q: What if I already have an initial license?
A: Students who already hold an initial license in Early Childhood Education, but do not have a master’s degree are welcome to apply for our Master of Science in Care and Education in Early Childhood Settings.

Graduates of other bachelor’s programs who have their initial license and are looking to gain professional licensure should contact a representative of Wheelock’s Office of Graduate Admissions. Students in this category may qualify for one of our combined degree options.

How do you know if your teen is abusing cough or cold medicines? Experts say the signs of teen drug abuse or misuse tend to be the same, regardless of the type of drug being abused, whether legal or illegal. Here are some signs of teen drug abuse to look for:

  • Grades. Have your teen’s grades or study habits declined? Sometimes, drug abuse can send a straight-A student to the verge of flunking out. Often, a sign of drug abuse is a slump that’s not quite so dramatic. A teenager might become less diligent about handing in assignments, forget to study for tests, stop participating in class, or skip classes altogether.
  • Friends. Has your teen stopped hanging around with usual friends? Have new faces – including some that might make you uneasy — suddenly started to appear? Your teenager may abandon long-term friends, especially if they are not involved in the same abusive behavior.
  • Mood. Have you noticed mood swings in your teen? Has your teenager become oddly manic, suddenly furious, sad, or listless? These can sometimes be a sign of drug abuse. You may notice that your teen also spends more time alone, away from family.
  • Appearance. Has your teen’s appearance changed significantly? You may notice that your teen has been wearing the same shirt for a few days, stopped showering regularly, or completely changed his or her style of clothing.

  • Secretiveness. Has your teen become excessively secretive about after-school activities, or strangely anxious if you get anywhere near his or her belongings?
  • Sickness. Does your teen frequently ask for cough or cold medicine? Obviously, you don’t want to dismiss signs that your child is sick with a cold or respiratory infection. But if your teen is always demanding medicine for a cough. it could be a sign of drug abuse.
  • Hidden trash. Have you found empty bottles of medicine or empty packages in the trash? If your teen is buying cough medicine on his own, and using it without telling you, it could be a sign of drug abuse.

These signs don’t prove your teen is abusing over-the-counter drugs; after all, mood swings, changes in sleep patterns, and secretiveness are a part of adolescence. March 31, 2015 /PRNewswire / — Autotrader s Car Buyer of the Future study, which was released today, shows that only 17 out of 4002 people prefer the current car buying process, and the rest want significant changes, particularly in the test drive, deal structuring, financing paperwork and service phases. As a leader in the automotive retail space, Autotrader is sharing the findings of the study to aid in the industry s understanding of consumer behavior and help dealers and manufacturers prepare to meet the needs of tomorrow s car buyers.

While there is good work going on right now to adapt decades-old sales processes, consumers are telling us that we as an industry are not moving fast enough, said Jared Rowe. president of Autotrader. By recognizing and embracing the need for change, we have a tremendous opportunity to surprise and delight our consumers.

A multiphase study that included a quantitative survey among 4002 car shoppers and buyers, the Car Buyer of the Future study identifies which changes consumers desire, the underlying reasons behind those changes and the benefit to dealers and manufacturers adopting to tomorrow s car buyers. In addition to identifying the changes that consumers do want, the study also dispels some commonly held beliefs about the future of car buying.

Dispelling Myths about the Future

Some commonly held beliefs about the future of car buying are that sales people will be less important in the future; consumers don t want to negotiate; and that lowest price will always win. In fact, the study shows the opposite.

  • Myth #1: Sales people will be less important in the future. In fact, the dealership and its sales people will continue to play a very important role in the car buying process. Eighty-four percent of consumers in the study indicate that they want to buy a car in person. Further, 43 percent see the dealership as a place to learn. At the dealership, consumers want to validate information they found online and learn about the following: specials, offers, warranty and service.
  • Myth #2: Consumers don t want to negotiate. Over half, 56 percent, of consumers prefer to negotiate, according to the study, and two of the most influential groups in car buying Millennials and females also prefer negotiating over flat rate pricing. This is a result of the fact that consumers do not yet trust flat rate pricing, and they feel that they have to negotiate to get a fair price.
  • Myth #3: Lowest price will always win. While price is important to consumers, the dealership experience can trump lowest price: 54 percent say that they would buy from a dealership that offered their preferred experience over lowest price. Additionally, 73 percent report that they are willing to drive farther for a great salesperson, versus 65 percent who are willing to drive to get the lowest price.

The Biggest Changes Need to Come in Four Main Areas:

  1. Test Drives. While 88 percent of consumers say they will not buy a car without test driving it first, the majority report that they do not prefer the way test drives are currently conducted (an accompanied test drive with a sales person). Instead, they want more convenience and less pressure while test driving, such as having the ability to test drive multiple vehicles across brands in a single place and taking a test drive with a product specialist instead of a sales person.
  2. Deal Structuring. Negotiating will be a part of the car buying process for the foreseeable future, and consumers indicate that they would like to see a big change in the way they go about negotiating the deal structure. Of those who liked the idea of online deal building, over half, 56 percent, want the ability to start the negotiation on their own terms preferably online and 45 percent would like to remain anonymous until they lock in the deal structure.
  3. Financing Paperwork. Nearly three fourths of consumers, 72 percent, want to complete the credit application and financing paperwork online. The key factors driving this desire are to save time at the dealership (reported by 72 percent of those who favor online paperwork) and to have less pressure while filling out paperwork (reported by 71 percent of those who favor online paperwork). A separate study conducted by Cox Automotive in 2014, showed that the time buyers spend in the F I office averages at 61 minutes, more than two thirds the total amount of time they want to spend at the dealership (90 minutes). Moving paperwork online and enabling consumers to complete it on their own time would greatly enhance the in-dealership experience and cut down on the time they spend in the dealership on the day of purchase.
  4. Service. When it comes to servicing their vehicles, 83 percent of consumers indicate that they would like to have the ability to access a network of local service centers that honor service agreements. The key factor driving this desire is convenience. Of those who prefer local service networks, 76 percent want to go to a service center close by, and 63 percent want to be able to service the vehicle anywhere.

The Benefits for Dealers and Manufacturers who Adapt are Clear

Dealers and manufacturers who focus on creating and ultimately deliver a better shopping and buying experience can reap significant benefits, according to the study:

  • Nearly three fourths (72 percent) of consumers say they would visit dealerships more often if the buying process were improved.
  • Two thirds (66 percent) of consumers say that they would be much more likely to buy from a dealership that offers their preferred experience.
  • Over half (53 percent) of consumers would buy a vehicle more often if the buying process were improved.

A lot of car buyers are flocking to car dealerships this week to capitalize on end-of-year car deals. But not all of them will walk away with a new car. Once at the dealerships, many find a better deal on the vehicle they want among the certified-pre-owned cars and trucks on the lot. And according to IntelliChoice. a provider of automotive cost and value analysis, Volvo and Hyundai have the best certified pre-owned programs in the auto industry.

Certified pre-owned cars are used vehicles that have undergone a safety inspection and carry a warranty. Because of this process, CPO vehicles tend to cost more than a traditional used cars. but also come with a higher level of reliability and can usually be bought with a higher level of confidence in the quality of the car.

Since CPO vehicles are often lease turn-ins and are refurbished and cared for by the dealership. they can be had with low miles and less wear and tear than traditional used cars.

The IntelliChoice study split CPO programs into two different categories: Premium and Popular. The Premium category consisted of 12 different brands, including Acura. Audi. BMW. Lexus and Volvo. The Popular category contained brands such as Chrysler. Ford. Honda and Hyundai.

IntelliChoice then analyzed each brand’s performance based on several criteria, most importantly the warranty and inspection processes. The brands that performed the best in each category were deemed the winners. For 2012, Volvo was the top choice in the premium category and Hyundai took the top spot in the Popular category.

Volvo received a 100 percent inspection score and also finished among the top five for its warranty score. Hyundai also received a 100 percent inspection score and the second-highest warranty score. IntelliChoice noted that Hyundai currently offers the longest powertrain coverage at 10 years/100,000 miles.

Other notable brands in the study were:

New Study Reveals States With Lowest Auto Loan Rates

LOS ANGELES A new study by GoBankingRates.com says the U.S. states with the lowest average auto loan rates are Michigan, Oregon and Alaska. The states with the highest average rates are Rhode Island, Connecticut and New Jersey.

The study found that the average interest rate nationwide for a loan on a new vehicle is 3.65 percent. In general, states on the West Coast have the lowest overall rates, while the Northeast has the most states with rates of 4.01 percent or higher.

GoBankingRates.com partnered with Informa Research Services to gather online data from more than 4,000 U.S. banks and credit unions. The study looked at the base interest rates for new-car loans as of July 24, 2013, for terms of 36 months, 48 months and 60 months, then averaged the findings from each state to arrive at the rankings.

Michigan, the traditional home of the U.S. auto industry, turned out to have the lowest statewide average: 3.03 percent. The best rates in Michigan were 1.49 percent for 36 months, 1.49 percent for 48 months and 1.75 percent for 60 months.

Oregon and Alaska each averaged 3.04 percent, according to the study. Rounding out the top 10 were New Hampshire, South Carolina, Vermont, Oklahoma, Utah, Washington and North Carolina, with rates ranging from 3.08 percent to 3.31 percent.

The worst rates were found in Rhode Island, which averaged 5.11 percent. Other bottom-10 results included Connecticut, New Jersey, Massachusetts, Louisiana, West Virginia, Delaware, Mississippi, Pennsylvania and the District of Columbia, with rates from 4.82 percent to 3.95 percent.

Although the study makes for interesting reading, rates within each state vary widely, so the compiled averages don’t tell consumers the whole story. A car shopper in Rhode Island, the state with the worst average, may find a local financial institution offering a rate equal to or better than the lowest one in Michigan, which had the best average.

As GoBankingRates.com advises, “When it comes to affordable financing, there are always great options available on the local level, and it’s up to the borrower to find them.”

In a recovering economy it’s particularly important to shop around for the best rate. For some time, many automakers have helped keep interest rates low through subsidies and incentives that increased sales. As the economy improves, says GoBankingRates.com, interest rates are on the rise.

But for now, the site notes, “car buyers continue to enjoy some of the lowest financing options available.” It just takes diligent comparison shopping to root out the best deals.

Edmunds says: As always, it pays to do your homework before walking into a lender’s office or car dealership.

WESTLAKE VILLAGE, Calif. 9 September 2014 — New-vehicle buyers who spend the most time on the Internet shopping for a vehicle also visit the most dealerships to shop prior to purchase, according to the J.D. Power 2014 New Autoshopper Study SM released today.

“There may be a notion in the marketplace that the more auto shoppers use the Internet to determine which vehicle to buy, the fewer dealers they are inclined to shop, yet we see just the opposite” said Arianne Walker, senior director, automotive media marketing at J.D. Power. “New-vehicle buyers who do a great deal of automotive Internet shopping also go to more dealerships to shop.”

The study analyzes how new-vehicle buyers use digital devices (computers, smartphones and tablets) to gather information prior to purchase, as well as which websites and apps they use during the shopping process. The study refers to new-vehicle buyers who use the Internet during their shopping process as automotive Internet users (AIUs).

AIUs spend on average nearly 14 hours on the Internet shopping for vehicles prior to purchase. AIUs who spend the most time shopping on the Internet (12 hours or more) visit more dealers (3.3) to shop prior to purchase than those who spend either a moderate (5 to 11 hours) or minimal (1 to 4 hours) amount of time on the Internet (2.5 and 2.0 dealers, respectively).

More than one-third (34%) of AIUs use either a smartphone or tablet while shopping at a dealership, up from 29 percent in 2013. Vehicle pricing is the most frequently accessed content while at a dealership (61%), followed by model information (42%), searching inventory (40%) and special offers/incentives (36%). Furthermore, the study shows that among AIUs who use these mobile devices to access vehicle pricing information at their dealership of purchase, 84 percent leverage this pricing information in the negotiation process and 73 percent perceive having obtained a better deal as a result.

According to Walker, “The phenomenon of ‘showrooming’ at new vehicle dealerships, where potential buyers use their mobile devices to verify information and price shop while at the dealership, will continue to grow. Shoppers are gathering information digitally up to moment the deal is signed, which underscores the need for ensuring mobile websites and apps have up-to-date and accurate information. Dealers need to    accept and embrace this practice as the new status quo and provide complete transparency with price, value and product offering in order to build trust with these savvy new-vehicle shoppers. If not, dealers could lose these customers to the competition.”

KEY FINDINGS

  • Devices Used for Automotive Shopping
    • The majority (96%) of AIUs use their desktop/laptop computer for automotive research.
    • Nearly one-third (28%) of AIUs use a smartphone to conduct automotive research in 2014, up from 23 percent in 2013; and 30 percent use a tablet device, up from 25 percent year over year.
    • Forty-one percent of AIUs use multiple devices during the new-vehicle shopping process, which is an increase from 34 percent in 2013.
  • Types of Websites Used for Automotive Shopping
    • A majority of AIUs visit at least one manufacturer brand website when shopping for a vehicle. Site visitors find manufacturer brand websites to be most useful for their model information, vehicle configurators and photo galleries.
    • Nearly 80 percent of AIUs visit a third-party site to obtain automotive information. In 2014, the most frequently visited third-party sites are consistent with the 2013 study results: (listed in alphabetical order) Car and Driver, Cars.com, Consumer Reports, Edmunds.com and Kelley Blue Book. 
    • Users of third-party sites indicate vehicle pricing and vehicle ratings and reviews are the most useful information listed on the sites.

New data reveals shoppers define luxury by car technology features

ATLANTA. Nov. 17, 2015 /PRNewswire/ — Technology trumps color when it comes to shopping for a new vehicle, according to findings of Autotrader s 2015 In-Vehicle Technology Shopper Influence Study, which provides insight into how vehicle technology impacts consumer vehicle purchase behavior. Conducted in September 2015. Autotrader had KS R, Inc. survey online 1,012 U.S. vehicle owners who are in the market to purchase a new vehicle. This is the second year of the study.

In this year s study, nine of 10 consumers likely to purchase a vehicle in the next year said they already have or plan to research the latest technologies as they shop for a new vehicle. More than three-quarters (77 percent) said a vehicle with all of the technology features they desired was more important than car color. Of those surveyed, 65 percent said they would switch vehicle brands to have all of the technology features they desired in their next vehicle. Increasingly, consumers surveyed said they want features like Wi-Fi and streaming music services in their vehicles along with must-haves including cruise control, diagnostic alerts and USB charging ports.

When it comes to luxury, more than half (53 percent) of consumers surveyed said they defined a vehicle as luxury or non-luxury by the technology and infotainment features available. And 44 percent said they would pay up to $1,499 for an in-vehicle concierge service such as Apple CarPlay or Android Auto.

“In-vehicle technology ranks increasingly higher for consumers as they consider must-have and desired features in their car shopping,” said Michelle Krebs. Autotrader senior analyst. “That puts automakers under intense pressure to anticipate and offer the technologies consumers desire, or they risk losing them to a brand that delivers.”

In addition to exploring what tech features to offer, automakers are contemplating the best avenues to deliver certain technologies either through the vehicle or via smartphones. In that regard, nearly 6 in 10 (57 percent) surveyed said they wanted automakers to focus on better integrating smartphones into all vehicles, similar to what some automakers now do with Apple Car Play or Android Auto. That was up from 48 percent in 2014. Similarly, 39 percent said they preferred to use the navigation system in their smartphones than a navigation system built into their vehicles, up from 20 percent a year ago.

The second year of this study also revealed that ease-of-use of vehicle features is not a key-deciding factor for car shoppers, with nearly three fourths (70 percent) saying they would still consider a vehicle they liked if the technology was perceived to be too difficult to use. In the 2014 study, 48 percent said they would walk away from a vehicle that was too hard to use. Nearly a quarter (22 percent) of consumers think it should take 15 minutes or less to figure out how to use the entire suite of tech features in their next vehicle (down from 48 percent in 2014).

“Consumers increasingly desire cool technologies as they are exposed to them, educated on their use, and as automakers improve the ease of use of them,” Krebs said. “Still, education is key to consumer acceptance of new technologies, which is a huge opportunity for automakers and their dealers.”

Other notable findings from the study include:

  • Must have car features are cruise control (59%), diagnostic alerts (52%) and USB charging ports (49%)
  • 39% of consumers would prefer the navigation system on a smartphone rather than the one built into their vehicles (up 19% from 2014)
  • 67% of consumers think being able to use streaming music services such as Pandora or Spotify makes driving more enjoyable (up 12% from 2014)
  • 61% of consumers surveyed wish their current vehicle had Wi-Fi (up 16% from 2014)

Car Buyer of the Future

ATLANTA. March 31, 2015 /PRNewswire / — Autotrader s Car Buyer of the Future study, which was released today, shows that only 17 out of 4002 people prefer the current car buying process, and the rest want significant changes, particularly in the test drive, deal structuring, financing paperwork and service phases. As a leader in the automotive retail space, Autotrader is sharing the findings of the study to aid in the industry s understanding of consumer behavior and help dealers and manufacturers prepare to meet the needs of tomorrow s car buyers.

While there is good work going on right now to adapt decades-old sales processes, consumers are telling us that we as an industry are not moving fast enough, said Jared Rowe. president of Autotrader. By recognizing and embracing the need for change, we have a tremendous opportunity to surprise and delight our consumers.

A multiphase study that included a quantitative survey among 4002 car shoppers and buyers, the Car Buyer of the Future study identifies which changes consumers desire, the underlying reasons behind those changes and the benefit to dealers and manufacturers adopting to tomorrow s car buyers. In addition to identifying the changes that consumers do want, the study also dispels some commonly held beliefs about the future of car buying.

Dispelling Myths about the Future

Some commonly held beliefs about the future of car buying are that sales people will be less important in the future; consumers don t want to negotiate; and that lowest price will always win. In fact, the study shows the opposite.

  • Myth #1: Sales people will be less important in the future. In fact, the dealership and its sales people will continue to play a very important role in the car buying process. Eighty-four percent of consumers in the study indicate that they want to buy a car in person. Further, 43 percent see the dealership as a place to learn. At the dealership, consumers want to validate information they found online and learn about the following: specials, offers, warranty and service.
  • Myth #2: Consumers don t want to negotiate. Over half, 56 percent, of consumers prefer to negotiate, according to the study, and two of the most influential groups in car buying Millennials and females also prefer negotiating over flat rate pricing. This is a result of the fact that consumers do not yet trust flat rate pricing, and they feel that they have to negotiate to get a fair price.
  • Myth #3: Lowest price will always win. While price is important to consumers, the dealership experience can trump lowest price: 54 percent say that they would buy from a dealership that offered their preferred experience over lowest price. Additionally, 73 percent report that they are willing to drive farther for a great salesperson, versus 65 percent who are willing to drive to get the lowest price.

The Biggest Changes Need to Come in Four Main Areas:

  1. Test Drives. While 88 percent of consumers say they will not buy a car without test driving it first, the majority report that they do not prefer the way test drives are currently conducted (an accompanied test drive with a sales person). Instead, they want more convenience and less pressure while test driving, such as having the ability to test drive multiple vehicles across brands in a single place and taking a test drive with a product specialist instead of a sales person.
  2. Deal Structuring. Negotiating will be a part of the car buying process for the foreseeable future, and consumers indicate that they would like to see a big change in the way they go about negotiating the deal structure. Of those who liked the idea of online deal building, over half, 56 percent, want the ability to start the negotiation on their own terms preferably online and 45 percent would like to remain anonymous until they lock in the deal structure.
  3. Financing Paperwork. Nearly three fourths of consumers, 72 percent, want to complete the credit application and financing paperwork online. The key factors driving this desire are to save time at the dealership (reported by 72 percent of those who favor online paperwork) and to have less pressure while filling out paperwork (reported by 71 percent of those who favor online paperwork). A separate study conducted by Cox Automotive in 2014, showed that the time buyers spend in the F I office averages at 61 minutes, more than two thirds the total amount of time they want to spend at the dealership (90 minutes). Moving paperwork online and enabling consumers to complete it on their own time would greatly enhance the in-dealership experience and cut down on the time they spend in the dealership on the day of purchase.
  4. Service. When it comes to servicing their vehicles, 83 percent of consumers indicate that they would like to have the ability to access a network of local service centers that honor service agreements. The key factor driving this desire is convenience. Of those who prefer local service networks, 76 percent want to go to a service center close by, and 63 percent want to be able to service the vehicle anywhere.

The Benefits for Dealers and Manufacturers who Adapt are Clear

Dealers and manufacturers who focus on creating and ultimately deliver a better shopping and buying experience can reap significant benefits, according to the study:

  • Nearly three fourths (72 percent) of consumers say they would visit dealerships more often if the buying process were improved.
  • Two thirds (66 percent) of consumers say that they would be much more likely to buy from a dealership that offers their preferred experience.
  • Over half (53 percent) of consumers would buy a vehicle more often if the buying process were improved.

The 2015 Autotrader Car Buyer of the Future study is a multi-phase qualitative and quantitative research study. A lot of car buyers are flocking to car dealerships this week to capitalize on end-of-year car deals. But not all of them will walk away with a new car. Once at the dealerships, many find a better deal on the vehicle they want among the certified-pre-owned cars and trucks on the lot. And according to IntelliChoice. a provider of automotive cost and value analysis, Volvo and Hyundai have the best certified pre-owned programs in the auto industry.

Certified pre-owned cars are used vehicles that have undergone a safety inspection and carry a warranty. Because of this process, CPO vehicles tend to cost more than a traditional used cars. but also come with a higher level of reliability and can usually be bought with a higher level of confidence in the quality of the car.

Since CPO vehicles are often lease turn-ins and are refurbished and cared for by the dealership. they can be had with low miles and less wear and tear than traditional used cars.

The IntelliChoice study split CPO programs into two different categories: Premium and Popular. The Premium category consisted of 12 different brands, including Acura. Audi. BMW. Lexus and Volvo. The Popular category contained brands such as Chrysler. Ford. Honda and Hyundai.

IntelliChoice then analyzed each brand’s performance based on several criteria, most importantly the warranty and inspection processes. The brands that performed the best in each category were deemed the winners. For 2012, Volvo was the top choice in the premium category and Hyundai took the top spot in the Popular category.

Volvo received a 100 percent inspection score and also finished among the top five for its warranty score. Hyundai also received a 100 percent inspection score and the second-highest warranty score. IntelliChoice noted that Hyundai currently offers the longest powertrain coverage at 10 years/100,000 miles.

Other notable brands in the study were:

New Study Reveals States With Lowest Auto Loan Rates

LOS ANGELES A new study by GoBankingRates.com says the U.S. states with the lowest average auto loan rates are Michigan, Oregon and Alaska. The states with the highest average rates are Rhode Island, Connecticut and New Jersey.

The study found that the average interest rate nationwide for a loan on a new vehicle is 3.65 percent. In general, states on the West Coast have the lowest overall rates, while the Northeast has the most states with rates of 4.01 percent or higher.

GoBankingRates.com partnered with Informa Research Services to gather online data from more than 4,000 U.S. banks and credit unions. The study looked at the base interest rates for new-car loans as of July 24, 2013, for terms of 36 months, 48 months and 60 months, then averaged the findings from each state to arrive at the rankings.

Michigan, the traditional home of the U.S. auto industry, turned out to have the lowest statewide average: 3.03 percent. The best rates in Michigan were 1.49 percent for 36 months, 1.49 percent for 48 months and 1.75 percent for 60 months.

Oregon and Alaska each averaged 3.04 percent, according to the study. Rounding out the top 10 were New Hampshire, South Carolina, Vermont, Oklahoma, Utah, Washington and North Carolina, with rates ranging from 3.08 percent to 3.31 percent.

The worst rates were found in Rhode Island, which averaged 5.11 percent. Other bottom-10 results included Connecticut, New Jersey, Massachusetts, Louisiana, West Virginia, Delaware, Mississippi, Pennsylvania and the District of Columbia, with rates from 4.82 percent to 3.95 percent.

Although the study makes for interesting reading, rates within each state vary widely, so the compiled averages don’t tell consumers the whole story. A car shopper in Rhode Island, the state with the worst average, may find a local financial institution offering a rate equal to or better than the lowest one in Michigan, which had the best average.

As GoBankingRates.com advises, “When it comes to affordable financing, there are always great options available on the local level, and it’s up to the borrower to find them.”

In a recovering economy it’s particularly important to shop around for the best rate. For some time, many automakers have helped keep interest rates low through subsidies and incentives that increased sales. As the economy improves, says GoBankingRates.com, interest rates are on the rise.

But for now, the site notes, “car buyers continue to enjoy some of the lowest financing options available.” It just takes diligent comparison shopping to root out the best deals.
