Companies may look at a variety of factors to determine your car insurance premium including:

What You Buy

  • Which coverages you buy
  • The deductibles

Find out more about types of car insurance coverage .

What Kind of Car You Drive

If you are buying or selling a car, you will need to re-evaluate your insurance needs .

Generally, the more expensive the car, the higher the car insurance price.

Where You Live

Generally, due to higher rates of vandalism, theft, and accidents, urban drivers pay a higher car insurance price than those in small towns or rural areas.

How Much You Drive

People who use their car for business and long-distance commuting normally pay a higher car insurance premium than those who drive less.

Your Age, Sex and Marital Status

Accident rates are higher for all drivers under age 25.

Your Driving Record

Accidents, regardless of fault, may impact the rate. Drivers in accidents generally must pay higher car insurance premiums than those who are accident-free for several years.

Your Credit History

Credit history has been shown to be a powerful predictor of future car insurance losses. Many insurance companies consider certain credit characteristics in addition to many other factors when determining an individual’s car insurance premium.

What Can I Do to Save Money on My Car Insurance Premium?

If you’re shopping for a car, consider how your choice will affect car insurance premiums.

Some insurers increase premiums for cars more susceptible to damage or occupant injury, and lower rates for those that fare better than the norm.

Consider joining a car or van pool, or finding other transportation to work. If you reduce your driving mileage enough, you may lower your car insurance price.

When I saw the commercials for State Farm and they said Like a good neighbor, State Farm is there I thought no insurance company is that good. But I was wrong! We switched to State Farm after I got into my first accident and it was cheaper than what we were paying before with our prior insurance company. They had great deals and low rates.

The staff at our agents location were excellent. When ever we would come in for anything they would stop whatever it was they were doing to help us and they made sure that they had taken care of and answered every question before we walked out the door. They also made us aware of all the different products they have without being a pushy sales person. We have along with our auto insurance, renters insurance, life insurance on both me and my husband, and personal articles insurance such as our wedding rings. And with all of that we are paying the same as we were when we were with our other company just having our one car insured.

The other thing that State Farm does that a lot of other insurance agents don’t is that they offer dividends at the end of the year if the company has done well and didn’t have an overage of claims in the previous year. We started our insurance in the middle of the year and the beginning of the next year we got a check from them! That was awesome.

And lastly our agent calls us every couple months to check in with us and to review our policy with us. I love that they do this because sometimes there are things that I want to change or add but don’t always think to do it.

My husband and I love State Farm and we aren’t planning on switching insurance company’s any time soon.

Is Your Car Eligible for Antique Car Insurance Coverage?

If you’re not sure, these definitions may help:

    • Classic Automobile: A motor vehicle ten or more years old, which is rare or of special historical interest because of exceptionally fine workmanship or limited production. A classic motor vehicle 25 years old or older is covered as an antique.
    • Antique Automobile: A motor vehicle 25 or more years old.

And here are some important conditions for classic car insurance eligibility:

    • Your antique or classic car must be used on a very limited basis, such as exhibitions, club activities, and parades or similar events.
    • You need to have restored, maintained, or preserved your antique or classic car.

    Available Coverages

    • Liability
    • Medical Payments/No Fault
    • Comprehensive
    • Collision
    • Uninsured Motor Vehicle/Underinsured Motor Vehicle
    • Emergency Road Service
    • Death, Dismemberment and Loss of Sight

More Reasons to Choose State Farm

    • Lower insurance premiums since your antique auto or classic car is used on a very limited basis such as exhibitions, club activities or parades.
    • When you choose antique or classic car insurance with us, you and State Farm will agree on the value of the car. If the car experiences a total covered loss, we will pay this agreed-upon value, rather than the actual cash value of the car.**
    • Up to $500 coverage for your car’s spare parts.*
    • 24 Hour Good Neighbor Service During the day or in the middle of the night, you can call your agent’s number and speak with a State Farm representative to handle your antique auto or classic car insurance needs.
    • We understand your classic car. We’ve been insuring collector cars for many years. In 2010, State Farm employees even created a 1968 ‘Split Camaro’ as a teaching tool. Cheapest car insurance for an 18-year-old

Even a no-frills car represents a huge expense for the 4 million or so Americans working a minimum-wage job.

But it represents a bigger challenge in some places than in others. Young drivers in Rhode Island and New Hampshire will work nearly three times as long as their counterparts in Illinois to buy liability insurance that meets their state minimum car insurance requirements. according to a analysis.

We ranked states by the number of hours needed to buy coverage, comparing their cheapest car insurance for 18-year-olds with their minimum wage.

This is as cheap as insurance gets, and there are few trade-offs available to save further. For example, by law you can t reduce your limits below the minimum amounts. And you can t raise your deductible. There are no deductibles on liability insurance.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the average hourly wage was $24.57 in December 2014, up from $24.17 per hour a year earlier. The average annual outlay for liability car insurance, says the Insurance Information Institute, was $504 as of 2012.

This means an average worker could buy a year of liability car insurance with about 21 hours of work.

But consider an 18-year-old working an entry-level job. The average state minimum wage as of July 2015 was just $7.92 an hour. And teenagers pay much more for insurance: The average price of a year of bare-bones coverage was $841, according to rates gathered from national car insurance carriers.

At those averages, a year of state minimum liability insurance would require 106 hours of work.

Because both wages and car insurance rates swing dramatically, we looked at affordability by comparing the cost of legal-minimum auto insurance with each state s minimum wage. Young drivers in Rhode Island and New Hampshire had it worst, with 174 hours required to buy the cheapest liability policy we found. A young driver finds much cheaper insurance in Illinois — a year of liability insurance takes just 56 hours of work.

How much is car insurance for an 18-year-old?

We compared rates using the state s cheapest ZIP code for a young driver with a clean record, good credit and previous insurance on a parent s policy. We chose the least expensive rate we found. Unless you re 18, male, a resident of the particular addresses we used and proud owner of a 1997 Ford Taurus, your quotes probably won t exactly match ours, which are only a snapshot of available rates.

They are, however, a good indicator of the financial hurdle confronting teenagers who depend on their own car to commute to school or work.
