I m one of the managers here at Standard, and the 4th generation of our family business. My great-grandfather started Standard in 1945 and it s been a landmark in Baltimore ever since. I started just as my Dad, stocking and cleaning shelves when I was a kid, then moving on to pulling parts for delivery orders in our massive warehouse. After that, I earned my way to work face to face with customers on our front counter. Eventually I was thrown into the beating heart of our operation: the inside sales team. That s where the BEST auto parts guys in the country do their thing. Every so often I go out on the road and visit with our wholesale customers, all the locally owned auto repair shops around Baltimore. Currently I do the marketing. The Standard brand is not just a company manufacturing auto parts but a company of people that are working together because they share a common passion and a common goal – to provide customers with the best products. The company was started in October of 1945, it was during the post- World War II period. The company then was selling auto parts, hardware supplies, and house paints.

After several years, the company decided to let go of the hardware supplies and house paints. It was actually in the 1962 when the company was renamed Standard Auto Parts Corporation. Two years before, the original building of the company was destroyed by fire. It was only until 1965 when the company was able to move to its present building. The new facility has given the company ample warehouse space allowing them to store a huge inventory of their auto parts products. With the large amount of inventory on stock the company was able to fill up every customer’s auto parts needs.

Then on 2003 the company again opened their new headquarters and distribution center this time at the South Baltimore. This new location has further allowed the company to grow even bigger.     Accelerator Pedal Sensors

    The Accelerator Pedal sensor indicates the position of the accelerator on vehicle models with electronic throttle control. The APS is basically a throttle position sensor (TPS) with a pedal attached. A Standard Accelerator Pedal Sensors utilize drive-by-wire technology, consistently been first to market in this category and has the APS line to over 150 SKUs with an emphasis on the import applications.     Anti-Lock (ABS) Sensors

    The anti-lock braking system uses an ABS or wheel sensor to monitor the wheel speed and send this information to the ABS computer. The ABS computer uses this information to prevent the brakes from locking during an emergency stop. If wheel speeds are not equal the computer modulates the anti-lock feature until the speeds are equalized. The ABS sensor is typically located in each wheel hub/rotor on a four channel ABS system. Some rear wheel drive applications have the sensor mounted in the rear differential. A failing sensor can illuminate the vehicle warning light or ABS warning lamp, and may cause failure of the anti-lock braking system to operate safely and properly.

    The SSAE 18 Reporting Standard SOC 1 SOC 2 SOC 3 Support and Guidance for SSAE18, SOC 1, SOC 2, and SOC 3 reporting standards

    Some organizations have heard of SAS 70, SSAE 16. and soon to be SSAE 18. but, don t really know WHY they need to pay to have a bunch of auditors trounce through their company for a month or two during the year, especially right after their financial audit just finished.
    The answer is simple: Many companies will not even think about using your company to perform services for them without a clean Type II Report in place.
    Some benefits of having an SSAE 16 performed :

    • Ability to perform outsourcing services for Public Companies.
      • If performing financially significant duties for a Public Company, they are required to use a SSAE 16 qualified provider as it is the only way to give investors assurance over controls that are not performed by the Company in question.
    • Public and Private companies are more likely to trust your organization with their data.
      • If you were to trust a company with your data, you would want complete assurance it will be handled with the utmost care
    • A year round accessible knowledge source (your auditors).
      • As a service organization, large or small, you will always have questions regarding your business and having a set of auditors in place with access to a wide array of business knowledge, it will allow you to bounce your questions and concerns off of a group of trusted individuals.
    • A third party to review your controls and activities to ensure they are functioning appropriately, and give advice on how to improve upon them.
      • Sometimes your internal audit department is good, but, not always as stringent as they should be. This will help to serve as a check on their work, as well as your staff. Additionally, if there were any findings noted, your auditors are in a great position to give you some tricks and tips to improve to ensure everything functions well the following period.
    • Improving performance of the organization.
      • Just the knowledge that a review is being performed of an employee s work that can have far reaching consequences for the company as a whole. No more, Oh, I didn t realize that reviewing user access was THAT important to do this month, sorry , now, everyone knows that if it s not done, the success or failure of the organization could rest upon them.

    Think of the SSAE 16 or SSAE-18 audit as an annual investment into your company, increasing potential new clients. productivity and accountability .

    This tip is focused on designing controls that reflect the process being testing, if they don t, a headache of massive proportions will be created once testing begins.
    What do you do to make sure you don t screw this up? Have as many meetings as it takes to get it right.
    What you need to do is sit down with the auditors, the department lead, the main employees responsible for performing the process, and anyone else whom could either play a role in testing or modifying the control in the future. Once that is done, Management should discuss what they determined the control to be and how it should operate, that is then reviewed by the auditors, and then the employees performing the tasks should be reconsulted to verify that the control still reflects their process accurately.
    Many times people try to speed this process up and half-ass it, leaving many open items which upon testing could easily blow up into a huge problem. When the control isn t 100% agreed upon prior to testing and a deviation is noted, it s a tough call between failing the control and the ability to adjust it to accurately reflect the process. The problem is modifying a control after testing has begun is not proper and needs to be avoided at all costs.
    Locking the controls locked down early on could save weeks in wrapping up your new SSAE 16 Report.
    We have seen issues like this cause delays in issuing of the report to the client and running additional fees, since adjusting controls isn t free.     A SOC 1 Report (System and Organization Controls Report ) is a report on Controls at a Service Organization which are relevant to user entities’ internal control over financial reporting. The SOC1 Report is what you would have previously considered to be the standard SAS70, complete with a Type I and Type II reports, but falls under the SSAE 16 guidance (and soon to be SSAE 18 ).

    SSAE16 is now effective as of June 15, 2011, and if you have not made the necessary adjustments required, now is the time to find a quality provider to discuss the proper steps. All organizations are now required to issue their Service Auditor Reports under the SSAE 16 standards in an SOC 1 Report.

    The soon to be effective, SSAE-18. is expected to follow a similar reporting structure to the SSAE-16 within a SOC 1 report.

    Who Needs an SSAE 16 (SOC 1 ) Audit?

    If your Company (the Service Organization ) performs outsourced services that affect the financial statements of another Company (the User Organization ), you will more than likely be asked to provide an SSAE16 Type II Report, especially if the User Organization is publicly traded.
    Some example industries include:

    • Data Center /Co-Location/Network Monitoring Services
    • Software as a Service (SaaS )
    • Medical Claims Processors

    What you Need to Know:

    Before starting the SSAE 16 process, there are a number of considerations one must take into account that can save considerable time, effort, and money in the long run. Use the following items as a mini checklist for yourself:

    • Does my Company need an SSAE16, or, are we doing it just because someone asked?
    • Reports on the low end can run at least $15,000 a year, will the business lost be less of a burden than the cost of the report itself?
    • Does your company have defined Business Process and IT controls in place, or, will you need assistance developing and implementing them (readiness assessment)?
    • Have you determined the controls in place which affect the outsourced services being provided?
    • Have key stakeholders been defined and included in discussions?

    Swap your pension for cash from April 2017

    M ore than five million pensioners who bought annuities will be able to swap their guaranteed income for a cash lump sum from April 2017, the Treasury has today confirmed .

    The move to create a new secondary annuity market is an extension of the Government’s landmark pension freedoms first announced in 2014, and applying from April 2015.

    Now the Government has said that from April 6, 2017, tax restrictions for people looking to sell their annuity will be removed, giving pensioners with an existing annuity – and anyone who purchases an annuity in the future – the ability to sell it on for cash.

    Currently someone wanting to sell an annuity to a willing buyer would face a tax charge of up to 70pc. The government will scrap this, so people are taxed only at their marginal rate (see the explainer, below).

    The move will be beneficial for those who can swap small or negligible annuity payments for a single, lump sum.

    But critics have pointed out numerous risks, and warn that giving up the right to a guaranteed income could be a dangerous step.

    Tom McPhail, pension expert at Hargreaves Lansdown warned that selling a guaranteed income will not be right for many people.”

    The government estimates there are around 5 million annuity holders, receiving total income of £13.3 billion a year.

    Sell your pension? How it would work

    It’s been the dream of many an unhappy annuity buyer: sell the policy back to the insurer for a cash lump sum. And now the Government wants to make it a reality.

    I t sounds a simple and attractive idea, but there are complexities. How could you be sure you were getting a good price for your annuity? And how much tax would you have to pay? We look at how such a market would work in practice.

    How much would I get for my annuity if I sold it on this new market?

    U nder current proposals, the annuity would continue to exist after you sold it in the second-hand market. Payment would be reassigned to the new owner and the pension would continue to pay out until you – not the new owner – died.

    We can’t be sure how much your annuity would fetch in these circumstances. But one possibility is that the annuity would be worth whatever it would cost someone of your age and life expectancy to buy the same annual income for life that you currently receive from the policy.

    For example, let’s say that you buy your annuity today at the age of 65 while you’re in good health. Roughly speaking, the annuity company will assume that you’ll live for another 20 years, until you are 85.

    Now let’s assume that you want to sell the annuity in five years’ time, when you are 70, and that you are still in good health then.

    I f the company that buys your annuity sells it on to another 70-year-old buyer in good health, it would presumably base its price to that buyer on what it would charge him or her for a new annuity at that time.

    However, the new buyer would probably prefer an annuity that lasted until his or her death, rather than yours. Therefore, he is likely to expect a discount for the “second-hand” annuity. He might also expect you to take a medical to confirm your good health. And the firm that carries out the transaction would expect a cut.

    If the second-hand annuity’s value is based on that of a new one, it would clearly depend on the factors that influence annuity rates at that time. These include the interest paid on government bonds (gilts). If you bought when annuity rates were higher, it means gilts were cheaper then, so your annuity should fetch more now.

    If there was no buyer for my annuity, couldn’t the insurer just buy it back?

    A: This is another possibility. Any annuity carries risk for an insurer because it doesn’t know when you will die and therefore how much money it will pay out in total. If a particular insurer thinks it has taken on too much risk, it could reduce it by buying back annuities. For the policyholder, the question is what price is offered. Experts said insurers would want a discount, perhaps 20pc, on the true value of the annuity.

    But what is that true value? It depends on your life expectancy at the time you want to sell. If your health has deteriorated since you bought the annuity, its value will be lower, reflecting the fact that it is likely to pay out for less time than originally expected.

    B ecause of this, you would probably have to have a medical check-up before you got a trade-in value for your annuity.

    What could go wrong?

    A s mentioned above, the problem for a buyer of your annuity is that payments will cease on your death, not theirs. How many people will want an income that could end at any time? This could severely dent prospects for the new market and make second-hand prices unappealing.

    It’s possible that individual annuities could be bundled together and sold to institutional investors to get round this problem.

    There are also practical problems. There will need to be a mechanism by which the original insurer is informed of the death of the first owner of the annuity so that it can stop the payments.

    It’s possible that these problems could be overcome if insurers were prepared to link payments to the new owner’s death rather than the original owner’s, assuming similar life expectancy.

    If I sold my annuity, how much tax would I have to pay?

    The sale would probably be treated in the same way as accessing your whole pension in one go under the pension freedoms that take effect in April. On other words, the money will be treated as income and taxed at your “marginal” or highest rate.

    UPDATE: Since the publication of this article the Government dropped its plan to create a secondary annuity market.
