How to sell your car privately

Selling your car privately is likely to get you the best price, as long as you’re prepared to invest some time and effort in organising your sale. Here you can find out what’s involved – from advertising and paperwork to safety precautions at buyer viewings and when taking payment.

What to do when selling your car

Don’t base your advertised asking price on guesswork. Instead, try using car valuation tools on sites such as Auto Trader, Parkers, What Car? and CAP.

Advertising your car is your first, essential step to a successful sale.

There are many ways you can advertise, some free, others involving a cost.

Your choice of advertising will probably be determined by how urgently you need to sell your car.

Some of the most popular ways of advertising cars are:

  • ‘For sale’ signs in local shop windows
  • Car auction sites, such as eBay and eBid
  • A ‘for sale’ sign in one of your car’s windows
  • In your local newspaper’s classified ads section
  • Car-selling websites such as AutoTrader and Gumtree

Whichever option(s) you choose, your advertisement must by law describe the car accurately and include the following details:

  • Colour
  • Mileage
  • Condition
  • Your contact details
  • List of equipment/taxes
  • Full service history (or not)
  • The exact make and model
  • The year of manufacture and registration identifier (eg ‘09’ or ‘59’ plate for 2009)

Images and pictures are very important when selling anything online.

Take a number of pictures from different angles and make sure they are of a good quality.

Advertising and selling your car online has several advantages and disadvantages:

  • Gives you access to a much wider audience.
  • Some online sites offer secure payment methods so you don’t have to worry about being scammed.
  • Allows you to give a lot more detail about the vehicle including pictures.
  • If selling on an auction site (like eBay) then you might not get as good a price as you hoped.
  • People will still want to see the vehicle before they buy or bid, so you will need to make time for these appointments.

Potential buyers will also be able to send in questions about the vehicle.

While it can be annoying to respond to all of them, it also gives you the chance to interact with interested buyers.

Too many questions can be avoided by including as much detail as possible in the description.

Ensuring safe payment

Once you’ve finished negotiating the price and agreed the sale with the buyer, you need to agree how they’ll pay the money to you.

Below are the main options available to you, with some tips to help ensure safe payment.

Cash in full

Make sure you count the money.

If possible, it’s a good idea to meet the buyer at your bank to take payment, so you can pay in the money immediately and the cashier will check the notes are genuine.

Immediate bank transfer using the CHAPS system

Keep possession of your car until the funds have transferred.

Bear in mind with this payment method you have to reveal your bank account details to the buyer.

Cheque or banker’s draft

Make sure you have proof of the buyer’s name and address – possibly a copy of a utility bill – so you can follow them up if you don’t receive payment.

If you have any doubts about them, don’t hand over the car keys until you know your bank has cleared the full payment into your account.

Most banks will show the cheque money arriving in your account by the next working day, but this is not the same as the cheque being cleared.

A common fraud is to present a cheque and get the bank to confirm the cheque has been paid in.

The seller then releases the goods, but a few days later the cheque bounces because it is fraudulent. By then the seller has lost their goods.

If your buyer wants to buy the car but can’t pay immediately, take a non-refundable deposit. £100 is the normal amount.

This will help cover your costs if they pull out and you have to re-advertise.

Essential paperwork

As soon as you’ve been paid for the car, you need to complete the following essential paperwork:

  • Write a receipt and make two copies – one for you and one for your buyer. It should include the date, price, registration number, make and model, plus you and your buyer’s names and addresses.
  • Complete and sends the V5C to the DVLA. This is done by completing the new keeper details (section 6) and signing section 8Complete and hand over the new keeper part of V5C to your buyer.
  • Give the new owner the car’s handbook, the keys (including any duplicate sets), the service logbook plus any receipts you have, and the MOT certificate if the car is over three years old. If you’re selling with a full service history, buyers also like to receive old MOT certificates and other maintenance receipts.
  • And finally, keep a separate note of the buyer’s name and address.

Don’t be tricked by fraudulent buyers

Around 7 million used cars change hands each year in the UK, many of them through private sales.

Selling your car privately can expose you to thieves posing as potential buyers.

Here are some recent scams to be on the look-out for:

  • Someone posing as a car exporter, who asks you to transfer ‘shipping fees’ to overseas ‘buyers’.
  • Phishing emails from so-called car buying and selling websites requesting login and payment details for your card.
  • Text messages expressing an interest in your car only for you to be charged at a premium rate if you respond by phone or text.
  • People wanting to buy your car using PayPal or similar e-payment systems – the account might have been set-up using false credit card details.
  • A buyer who pays by cheque and takes the car before the cheque clears, but the cheque bounces a few days later because it is a forgery or fake
  • A buyer offering to buy your car unseen who pays the full amount through PayPal. You’re then notified you’ve been overpaid and you’re asked to return the difference through a different online payment method. As you do this, the fraudster arranges for their original PayPal transaction to be reversed and you lose the money you’ve ‘returned’.

Safety when people come to view your car

As the people coming to view your car will usually be complete strangers, it makes sense to take some basic precautions:

  • When arranging a viewing, consider having a friend or family member present.
  • Ask the buyer for proof of identity and check that they have a valid driver’s licence.
  • Always remove the keys from the ignition before leaving a potential buyer alone in your car.
  • Go with potential buyers on test drives and don’t hand over the keys until you’re in the passenger seat.
  • Be wary if a buyer brings some ‘tag-a-long’ friends – they might plan to break into your house while you’re out on the test drive.
  • Don’t hand over the car keys or documents until your bank has confirmed it has cleared the full value of the vehicle into your account.
  • Ask the potential buyer to check with their insurance company they’re covered to drive your car. Even if they have a “driving other cars” policy it will probably only provide third party cover. Contact your insurance company – you might need to get temporary car insurance for the test drive.

Edmunds’s True Market Value or used car value is is a great starting point for negotiation of a used-car sale between a private buyer and seller. This is an “as is” value that does not include any warranties. The final sales price depends on the car’s actual condition and local market factors. You can use this used car value estimate to price your car for sale or to negotiate a trade-in for a new, CPO, or previously owned car for sale from a local dealer. So how do you know you’re getting a nice price? Do an advanced search and look at the completed listings. You’ll see what sold. Maybe even more important, you’ll see what didn’t.

TrueCar

TrueCar is a great tool for removing the mystery of the MSRP. Say you want a 2015 Chevrolet Silverado 1500. For that truck, TrueCar has more than 10,000 actual -transaction prices that help you see what you should pay -(probably $2,000 under invoice). Be forewarned that if you do sign in and search a particular model, dealers will begin calling you within about three minutes.

AutoTempest

This is an aggregator that covers a number of the popular car-buying sites. The key feature, though, is Craigslist aggregation. I used it to locate and buy a truck that ended up being 800 miles away. And manually searching an 800-mile Craigslist radius is a little masochistic even for hardcore used-car junkies.

Cars.com is useful simply because it’s so huge that it quickly exposes outlier prices both high and low thanks to the national sample size. It’s also great for finding leftovers, since you can search new cars and then sort by oldest first. Did you miss out on the Pontiac Solstice GXP back in 2009? Not to worry, Malouf Buick GMC in New Jersey still has a new one. Although they’re evidently not in much of a rush to sell it.

Carvana

How to Complete Paperwork and Payment

The paperwork and payment are easiest when the seller owes no money on the vehicle and already has the title in hand. But even if this is not the case, there are certain precautions you can take which offer protection no matter the situation.

The following guide offers general best practices when buying or selling a used car to a private party. The specific requirements for transferring a title differ slightly from state to state, so always be sure to check with your local DMV for details.

Scenario 1: Seller Has the Title

This is the best case scenario. First, both parties should fill out and sign a Bill of Sale which lists the Vehicle identification number (VIN), agreed purchase price, odometer reading, and name/address of the buyer and seller.

Next, the buyer needs to take care of the payment. The best way is at their bank, in person. The buyer should get a cashier’s check made out to the seller for the amount agreed to.

Another option is to use an escrow service. We recommend Escrow.com, which protects both buyer and seller.

Whatever you do, don’t agree to wiring money when doing a private party sale – there is simply too much fraudulent activity associated with this.

After the payment has been transferred, the seller needs to sign the title over to the buyer (instructions are normally provided on the back). The seller will then need to contact the DMV within 5 days to transfer ownership and release themselves from any liability for the vehicle.

Again, check with your local DMV as each state has slightly different requirements.

Scenario 2: Seller Does Not Have the Title

If the seller still owes money on the vehicle, then their lender will be in possession of the title. It will only be transferred when the seller has paid off the loan in full.

In this scenario, there are basically two options. The buyer and seller can both go to a local branch of the lender (if it’s available). The buyer can pay the lender directly and provide them with their name and address so they can fill out the paperwork and have the title transferred.

The other option is to complete the bill of sale and have it notarized to help protect the buyer against fraud.

The buyer will then make payment either through check or escrow service, and the seller will use that payment to pay off the loan and get the title. In the meantime, the buyer will have to take the bill of sale to the DMV and get a temporary operating permit so they can use the vehicle while waiting for the title.

Once the seller gets the title from the lender (usually in about 10 days), they will then mail it to the buyer and the sale is complete. This option requires a bit of trust by the buyer since they will have to make a payment without a title.

That’s why it’s important to get the Bill of Sale notarized and why you should consider using an escrow service.

The INVENTORY tab at the top of the page allows you to browse used cars for sale from popular makes such as Ford, Honda, Toyota, Chevrolet, Hyundai, Infiniti, Acura and Subaru. The inventory tool allows you to cast a much wider net than simply visiting your local dealership’s website. Start with the make and model of the vehicle that you’re interested in. You’ll have the option to refine your search by price, distance, model year and mileage. If you’re looking for specific options or features, a certain trim level or a specific color, there are more advanced search filters available, including engine type, fuel type, drivetrain, powertrain, airbags, air-conditioning and much more. After you find the car, SUV, truck or hybrid that you’re interested in, select the listing to check out the VIN details page for that vehicle and get more information. There you’ll find a description of the vehicle from the dealer, vehicle features and options, contact information for that dealership, dealer reviews, a ballpark insurance estimate, and a link to see a Carfax vehicle history report.

The APPRAISE tab at the top of the page lets you enter your car’s basic information, odometer reading, trim level, and overall condition. Then Edmunds provides you with the True Market Value (TMV) for your used car or vehicle. Edmunds’s True Market Value or used car value is is a great starting point for negotiation of a used-car sale between a private buyer and seller. This is an “as is” value that does not include any warranties. The final sales price depends on the car’s actual condition and local market factors. You can use this used car value estimate to price your car for sale or to negotiate a trade-in for a new, CPO, or previously owned car for sale from a local dealer. The used car value estimate is also useful for assessing retail pricing at a car dealer. You can try it out by clicking the “APPRAISE” tab, above. Once you enter your vehicle details, you will receive three estimates for your used car’s value: “Trade-in” is what you can expect a dealer to offer you for your used car; “Private Party” is what you might expect to earn if you sold the pre-owned vehicle yourself; and “Dealer Retail” is what you might expect to pay if you were buying this used model used at a dealership. If the vehicle is new enough, you’ll also see a price that says “Certified Used Price.” This price estimates what the dealership might sell it for as a certified pre-owned vehicle.

The RESEARCH tab points you to our expert analysis of the make and model of the car you select. You can read our editors’ reviews and learn about each generation of the vehicle you’re interested in. From there, you can narrow the focus of your car buying research by selecting a particular model year and learning more by checking out photos of the cars, researching local dealership listings, car valuation, consumer reviews, editors’ reviews, pros & cons, features & specs, and safety information. That’s a world of information. And we’ve put it all right at your fingertips.

Are you thinking about trading in your vehicle at the dealership or selling it yourself? Find out what your used car is worth with our True Market Value appraisal tool. Enter the year, make and model to get started. Make sure you know the options on your vehicle and the current odometer reading. Be honest about the condition level. Most cars will fall in the “average” to “clean” range.

The appraisal tool will give you three prices: “Trade-in” is what you can expect a dealer to offer you. “Private Party” is what you might expect to earn if you sold the vehicle yourself. “Dealer Retail” is what you might expect to pay if you were buying this model used at a dealership. If the vehicle is new enough, you’ll also see a price that says “Certified Used Price.” This price estimates what the dealer might sell it for as a CPO vehicle.

If you are hesitant about buying a traditional used car, you may want to consider a certified pre-owned vehicle. These vehicles tend to be newer, have gone through a more detailed inspection process and come with a limited warranty.
