There you’ll find a description of the vehicle from the dealer, vehicle features and options, contact information for that dealership, dealer reviews, a ballpark insurance estimate, and a link to see a Carfax vehicle history report.

The APPRAISE tab at the top of the page lets you enter your car’s basic information, odometer reading, trim level, and overall condition. Then Edmunds provides you with the True Market Value (TMV) for your used car or vehicle. Edmunds’s True Market Value or used car value is is a great starting point for negotiation of a used-car sale between a private buyer and seller. This is an “as is” value that does not include any warranties. The final sales price depends on the car’s actual condition and local market factors. You can use this used car value estimate to price your car for sale or to negotiate a trade-in for a new, CPO, or previously owned car for sale from a local dealer. The used car value estimate is also useful for assessing retail pricing at a car dealer. You can try it out by clicking the “APPRAISE” tab, above. Once you enter your vehicle details, you will receive three estimates for your used car’s value: “Trade-in” is what you can expect a dealer to offer you for your used car; “Private Party” is what you might expect to earn if you sold the pre-owned vehicle yourself; and “Dealer Retail” is what you might expect to pay if you were buying this used model used at a dealership. If the vehicle is new enough, you’ll also see a price that says “Certified Used Price.” This price estimates what the dealership might sell it for as a certified pre-owned vehicle.

The RESEARCH tab points you to our expert analysis of the make and model of the car you select. You can read our editors’ reviews and learn about each generation of the vehicle you’re interested in. From there, you can narrow the focus of your car buying research by selecting a particular model year and learning more by checking out photos of the cars, researching local dealership listings, car valuation, consumer reviews, editors’ reviews, pros & cons, features & specs, and safety information. That’s a world of information. And we’ve put it all right at your fingertips.

Are you thinking about trading in your vehicle at the dealership or selling it yourself? Find out what your used car is worth with our True Market Value appraisal tool. Enter the year, make and model to get started. Make sure you know the options on your vehicle and the current odometer reading. Be honest about the condition level. Most cars will fall in the “average” to “clean” range.

Each year you drive your old car is one more year you don’t have to worry about paying for a new one.

Yet, with every turn of the odometer, you’re one mile closer to big repair and maintenance bills.

At some point, it costs so much to keep your old ride on the road that you’d be better off investing all of the money you’re spending at the garage on a new car or truck. Our database of the best auto loan rates can help get you started.

There’s no magical mileage threshold that tells you when it’s time to ditch your car. In fact, many of today’s vehicles routinely exceed 100,000 miles without experiencing major mechanical problems.

But if you’re being hit with one repair bill after another, these 5 steps can help you decide if the time has come to ditch your old car or truck.

Step 1. Find out what your car is worth.

All smart decision-making starts with this.

To find out what your car is worth, research it on an auto valuation site, such as Edmunds.com or Kelley Blue Book (kbb.com).

You’ll be asked a few questions about the year, make and model of your car, the odometer reading and the condition it’s in, taking any repairs you’re planning to make into account.

Those websites will provide you with three potential values for your car.

The one you want to use is the trade-in value, which is the lowest of the three estimates.

This is the amount you can expect to receive from a dealer if you include your current car in a deal to buy another car there.

Let one of the best commuting cars of 2014 take the stress and worry out of those slogs to work, the supermarket and other daily destinations. They’re safe and economical but don’t scrimp on creature comforts, including automatic transmissions and air-conditioning. With prices starting at just over $19,000 and climbing to just under $31,000, we’re confident you’ll find the perfect ride.

Step 2. Determine how much it will cost to keep it on the road.

Ask your mechanic for a rundown of all the:

  • Big repairs that must be done right now to keep your vehicle running.
  • Additional repairs that can be postponed but need to be done over the next year.
  • Major maintenance that will come due during the next 12 months based on how many miles are on the car.

We’re not talking about oil changes.

We’re talking about the more costly work required as vehicles reach 60,000 to 100,000 miles — everything from changing the transmission fluid and coolant to replacing worn-out tires, brake pads and rotors, water pumps, suspension parts and timing belts.

Check your owner’s manual for the manufacturer’s recommended maintenance schedule. If you don’t have the manual, any reputable shop can check the schedule for your car and tell you exactly what you’ll need to do and how much those repairs will cost.

Postpone that work, and you’ll run a greater risk that your car will break down and stick you with an even bigger repair bill once you’ve been towed to the shop.

Take the timing belt, for example. It connects the crankshaft to the camshaft and controls the opening and closing of the valves in your engine.

Replacing a timing belt often costs $600 or more. But if you don’t do it, you can pretty much count on a worn-out timing belt breaking at some point, seriously damaging your engine.

Then it would cost $2,000 or more to get it running again.

Also, watch for two signs of big trouble:

  • Blue smoke out the tailpipe means you’re burning oil, which very likely indicates the oncoming need for an engine replacement. (A little white smoke until the engine warms up is OK.)
  • Slipping between gear changes means your automatic transmission is failing. (Slipping is where the engine revs up without any appreciable increase in speed.)

Add up all of the repairs and maintenance you’ll need to do over the next year, and compare it to the trade-in value of your car.

If you’ll have to spend more than the car is worth to keep it on the road for another year, then it makes financial sense to invest that money in a new ride.

Step 4. Recalculate your costs using past repair bills.

You aren’t finished if that comparison falls on the side of keeping your old car, especially if it’s not a decisive difference.

Mechanics can’t look at your car and predict everything that’s likely to break over the next year, so maybe you didn’t have a list of estimated future repairs in Step 2.

That doesn’t mean you’re not going to have any.

Reliability guides, such as the ones from Consumer Reports. provide entire lists of problems that consistently plague almost every make and model as it ages.

In fact, here’s a pretty tried-and-true rule of car ownership: The older your car gets, the more stuff breaks.

I remember the look on my father’s face when I explained to him that I would be selling cars. It was the look any of someone who has just heard the details of a grisly murder; a bit of curiosity, quickly overtaken by disdain. He sank into his chair. “It’s a job,” he grunted, and I realized that was as strong an endorsement for my new job as I was going to get. Truth be told, I felt about the same.

It s no surprise that the car salesman has been painted as a snake-oil pusher; a charlatan peddling his wares to people in an unethical manner. Like all stereotypes it s a vast overgeneralization, but I had the same perceptions of car salesmen as anyone going into my first day at work. I wondered: how accurate were the portrayals in popular culture? Would I have to get white shoes and slick back my hair? Would I have to wear a pinky ring?!

My fears were assuaged as I was let in on the trade secrets. Here’s the dirty, sordid summation of car salesmanship: guide, but don’t push. That’s it in a nutshell. Sure, we accentuate the positive attributes of a car and explain why the car fits the needs you, the buyer, have laid out for us, but it does neither you nor us any service to try and push you into a car you don’t want.

The nature of the business is a strange one; both sides, neither friends nor foes, feigning small-talk while each wanting to retain money that is up for grabs. As my contempt for my new profession faded and I discovered that a few bad apples had soiled the reputation of all car salesmen, I began to observe the odd interactions between buyers and salesmen. Certain unexpected truths quickly revealed themselves.

Truth #1: Everybody Wants to Buy, but Nobody Wants to be Sold

On my second day at the job, a veteran salesman summed up every buyer: everybody wants to buy, but nobody wants to be sold. He was right.

Instead of pushing anything, I began to familiarize myself with cars and whenever I talked to an “up” (an on-the-lot customer), I started by asking buyers what were “musts” and what were “preferences”. The process started with them narrowing in on what they envisioned for their ride. If people envision driving down the freeway in a luxury SUV, no matter what kind of sedan you show them, they will feel conned if you push them towards a sedan. Then, you will have lost their trust and most likely, their business. So, we always take the buyer’s lead. “You want a ½ ton Chevy with an extended cab? Great, we have several of them. You mentioned you would like it black. If the price was right, would you consider a different color?” Every preference has its price.

Despite the shady reputation, car salesmen really do listen and care what car you want. The problem is that most buyers aren’t sure of what they want themselves. We have to guide you to the sale, but make sure it’s your idea. Honestly, it’s exhausting. Our persuasive skills mainly come into play in the negotiation process. So, before you step on the lot, write out your “musts” and be prepared to articulate them to your salesman and you’ll make it easier to find that for which you are looking.

Truth #2: Buyers are (Most Likely) Not Professional Negotiators

As we walk amongst the rows of cars, buyers are wary of salesmen. They’re fearful we will pull some voodoo magic mixed with a Jedi mind-trick and force them into buying a car against their will. Once they’re in the office, a façade of skepticism and unearned bravado washes over them and anxiety dissipates like a Xanax in full effect. Husbands will swagger as if to say, “I’ve got this. I know how to haggle.” It’s an odd phenomenon because this is where buyers should feel the least confident.

We know the buyer likes the car. The average person goes through the car buying process a handful of times in their lives. Yet, while the salesman deals in car sales frequently, the buyer often puts forth a confident front. It’s reminiscent of the stereotypical tourist who saddles up to the blackjack table in Vegas insisting that he has a “system” after having read a book about gambling on the plane. Remember: they didn’t build Caesar’s palace by losing to tourists, and we don’t sustain a living by being bested by buyers. Does it happen? Sure, but not often.

It’s weird to witness; the theatrics people pull to show they won’t be pushed around. They will stomp out in a huff and hope we chase after them. They will low-ball us and claim that they saw the exact same car down the road for that price. If they had, they would be down there buying it.

The best way to get a killer deal is to approach the negotiation from a prepared standpoint. Do your research! Know, realistically, how much the car is worth (not according to Kelley Blue Book, but local market value), and understand that the dealership needs to make a profit, too. If they offer you a ludicrous deal, showing them that you know your stuff goes a long way to getting them to knock off the high-balling. If you come prepared with a reasonable offer, based on facts and not wishful thinking, things will go a lot smoother for everybody and you won’t appear foolish. While bravado is often a sign of unsure footing, preparedness illustrates to us someone who is not easy fooled and will often yield a better deal.

Truth #3: The Real Savings are in the Trade-in Allowance, not the Price

People do whatever they can to not pay sticker price. Paying full sticker can feel like a moral defeat. However, where salesmen often have the most wiggle room is in the trade-in allowance.

We get a commission based on the profit the dealership made. We also give you the littlest amount for your trade-in so that when we sell it, we make the most money. Furthermore, we need to allow as much room as possible in case your trade-in (that you swore “runs like a top”), needs costly repairs.

When you come into our office and demand we lower the asking price, we are hesitant to do so because it eats away at the profit margin as well as our commission. A better tactic is to ask for a better price on your trade.

This is tricky. Don’t be defensive. Everybody is defensive when that jewel of a car is appraised for two-thirds its actual value. Instead, insist that the sticker price is a bit high, but that you are more concerned with the trade-in allowance. Getting a thousand dollars more for your trade-in is the same as getting a thousand dollars off the selling price. But it can be easier to get the trade-in number to budge.

Of course, every dealership is different and may have different policies as to how they figure commission. So it won’t necessarily work at every dealership. But if raising the trade-in allowance doesn’t affect the salesman’s commission, then you will likely get less resistance from him.

It’s a strange business, alright. However, people need cars and as my dad said: it’s a job.

Just follow each page and enter data about the car. The KBB uses the categories of fair, good, very good and excellent ; Edmunds uses damaged, rough, average, clean and outstanding. Take the KBB condition quiz to assess the value of your car. For a car to rate in good condition, the most popular KBB rating, the car must have 50 percent tire tread remaining, have only minor scratches and minor rust. According to the KBB. 18 percent of cars were rated as fair; 54 percent good; 23 percent very good; and only 3 percent were rated excellent. Cars rated fair have substantial wear. Cars rated very good require minimal conditioning, and cars rated excellent require no conditioning. Edmunds follows similar guidelines in its true market value pricing. Cars rated outstanding need no reconditioning; cars rated clean, minor reconditioning; cars rated average may need considerable reconditioning; cars rated rough need extensive reconditioning and may have bad tires; cars rated as damaged may need so much reconditioning they are deemed unsafe to drive. Edmunds also states that cars rated excellent are older vehicles with low miles in pristine condition. Very few meet this standard.

Once you get the value, you can mark it up to give yourself some wiggle room when negotiating. Edmunds advises that the higher the value of the car, the more gap you should create between your asking price and your desired price. For example, for a car valued at $5,000, you should set the price at $5,750; for a value of $15,000, you should price the car at $16,500. Also consider how consumers think. Staying just under the threshold of a desired price can pay off too. For example, if you want to sell a car that is the same make and model as other cars selling for an average of $6,000, you might fare better if you price it at $5,975 because consumers will feel they are paying less even if the difference is insignificant.

    When I got in the car business almost 18 years ago, I was thrown to the dogs. I had no worth-while training, the only close I learned was “If I could, Would You. “, my only technique was selling on price and quite frankly, I SUCKED!     Tip #1: Stay Away from Negative Salespeople, Huddles, etc!

    I can’t stress this enough. There is a type of salesperson in the car business that I call an Old Timer. They think they know everything, they don’t want to learn new things, they are average (or below average) salespeople and they take great fun out of bringing new salespeople down to their weak level. Every dealership I have ever worked in has at least one. Hell, I have even been one before! LOL

    They never give good advice and if they try, they lack the skills to even know what they are talking about. They are good at making excuses as to why things are bad instead of learning/trying new things to sell more cars. They get jealous when a new guy knocks a “home run” and claim that other salespeople are outselling them because “they get all the house deals!” They are poison to a new car salesperson. Stay away from them! Avoid them like the plague.

    Tip #2: Use a Great Greeting!

    Bad greetings include, “Can I help you?” or “Can I get someone for you?” or the ever popular, “Can I help you OR get someone for you?” That was my greeting for my first 7 years in the car business and I am convinced that it cost me enough to pay cash for a new house. Seriously!

    What, you may ask, is wrong with this greeting? You see all the old timers using it! Well, it is easy to create a “reflex objection” buy starting off with a yes/no question. Someone may answer, “I’m just looking.”

    The greeting you should use: “Welcome to ABC Motors. I’m (your name) and you are. “

    Walk into a “Moe’s” one day where everyone yells, “Welcome to Moe’s!” Walk into a department store when someone says, “Welcome to JC Penny.” What comes out of your mouth? Not “I’m just looking” but rather “thanks!”

    A good greeting is very important and will start the sale off right by allowing you to get control early-on. It will also make your customer feel welcome and appreciated.

    Just because you owe money on your car doesn’t mean you can’t sell it. The sales process may be more complicated, but it’s not uncommon to sell a vehicle with a car lien on it.

    The reasons a used car may have a lien vary. It may be that you owe money for unpaid repairs or you used your vehicle as collateral. More likely there’s a lien because the vehicle was financed and hasn’t been paid off yet. In any of those cases, the lender or lien holder owns the car and thus the title. Without the title, the buyer can’t take legal ownership of the vehicle, making the sale process a little more complicated but not unattainable.

    “Most vehicles that are sold do have an existing lien on them,” says Lana Johnson, senior vice president of originations for Santander Consumer USA, an auto financing firm in Fort Worth, Texas. “It’s usually primarily because the car was financed.”

    If that’s your predicament, here are some tips to sell a car with a lien.

    Dealerships make selling easy

    When looking to sell a vehicle with a car lien due to financing, there are two options. You can sell to a dealer or sell it in the private market. Depending on which way you go, the process will differ.

    “Going to the dealership is the easiest route to sell,” says Ron Montoya, consumer advice analyst at Edmunds.com, a vehicle information website. Dealers take care of the paperwork for you. If you do decide to work with a dealer, make sure you are getting a fair price. Know the value of your car before you start negotiating.

    Robert Sinclair Jr. spokesman for AAA New York, says anyone looking to sell a used car in “decent condition” should expect to get a good price. “With the bad economy, people are holding on to their cars much longer, resulting in fewer used cars,” he says. Sinclair says to never accept below book value for your vehicle. Book value is a car’s market value as determined by Kelley Blue Book.

    Whether you sell to a dealer or an individual, the sale of a car with a lien gets tricky if the loan is upside down, meaning you owe more than the car is worth. In that case, Montoya says you’re apt to have more difficulty selling the car unless you are willing to pay the difference.

    Do your research before selling

    Before attempting to sell your used car to a dealer, Johnson says to call your lender to find out how much you owe. Once at the dealership, the dealer will evaluate your car and tell you what it’s willing to pay.

    “If you agree to sell the car, the dealer makes it really easy,” says Johnson. “The dealer handles the entire transaction from there.” That means you give the dealer power of attorney and it will contact your lender on your behalf and make arrangements to pay it directly, and give you any money over the loan’s balance. Once the loan is paid off, the lender will then release the car’s title to the dealership.

    When selling to a dealer, Montoya at Edmunds.com says to make sure you are in contact with your car’s lien holder the entire time, and that you get details in writing from the dealer, laying out all the terms of the deal.

    “Make sure they give you some sort of certificate that the balance is paid off before you hand over the keys,” Montoya says.

    Make more money by selling privately

    Selling to an individual may be a bit more complicated, but it may yield you a higher sale price. “Often, you can get more money from a person, but there’s a lot more time and effort,” Johnson says.

    When listing your car for sale, you may want to note that there’s a lien on it upfront to prevent any confusion. If your car lien holder is local, the seller and buyer can go to the lender’s office directly to pay off the loan and give the buyer ownership of the title, says Jeffrey Foster, an attorney at Foster Law Offices in Seattle.

    Another option is to have the buyer pay the lender for the seller and then pay the seller any money above the payoff amount, similar to how the dealer does it. Depending on the state, the lien holder hands the title over to the buyer, or the buyer would have to wait for the title to be released to the seller and then sign it over to the buyer, requiring a leap of faith on the buyer’s part.

    Escrow accounts provide security

    One way to protect all the parties involved in a private transaction is to use an escrow service that will secure the buyer’s funds until he or she takes possession of the car and title. “The standard escrow secures buyer’s funds so the seller knows the funds are real money and the buyer takes possession and makes sure it’s what it’s supposed to be,” says Andee Hill, director of business development at Escrow.com based in Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.

    In addition to an escrow service, consumers can purchase payoff services that will do all the work for them by gathering the lien holder information, confirming the payoff amount, reconfirming the amount at closing and making sure there are enough funds in the escrow account. Other available services include a title transfer service to ensure the lien holder transfers the title to the buyer.

    The fees for escrow services vary based on the amount being financed. “We see a lot of splitting of the escrow fee between the seller and the buyer,” Hill says. “It benefits both parties. It’s not only the buyer making sure he gets the vehicle and title, but the seller has a lot of risk because there’s payment fraud.”

    At AutoTrader.com, we want to do everything we can to help you sell your car quickly and easily. A big part of that objective is preventing fraud and looking out for your safety as you move through the process.

    To that end, we’ve compiled some general guidelines that can help you prepare and safeguard your interests when advertising and selling a car.

    Tips for Personal Safety

    • Get information about the prospective buyer. including full name, street address, phone number, driver’s license number and insurance information. When you initially communicate with the potential buyer. mention that you’ll need these documents before the test drive.
    • Scout out a logical route for the test drive in advance. Choose streets that don’t have a lot of traffic, but don’t venture into secluded areas .
    • It’s best to meet in a public place. like the parking lot of a shopping center. And keep your cell phone with you.
    • Decide whether you’re more comfortable going with your buyer on the test drive or staying behind. This is a judgment call on your part, made more easily if you have someone with you.
    • If at all possible, bring a friend or family member along. And make sure someone knows where you’re going, the route you expect to take and when you expect to return.
    • If you let the potential buyer take your car by himself, ask him to leave his keys while you wait, and be very specific about the maximum length of time you expect him to be gone.

    Tips for Avoiding Scams

    • Secure payment before you transfer ownership and work only with the specific person who is purchasing your car (versus someone acting on his behalf). If you accept a check, be sure to verify it with the issuing bank — not your bank. (The easiest way to avoid problems is to go to the buyer’s bank and complete the final transaction there.)
  • Be wary of anyone who makes an offer to buy your car sight-unseen. especially buyers located overseas. This is often part of a larger scam to pass a bad check or to get the title of the car without paying for it. Always verify the buyer’s street address and phone number.
    • An escrow service — a third party that holds the title to your car until you are absolutely certain your payment is secure — can be a good option, but only if you use a reputable bank or attorney, or a well-known, established online service. Never agree to an escrow service  that the prospective buyer suggests unless you have thoroughly researched it — the Better Business Bureau is a good place to start.
    • In an overpayment scam. the potential buyer typically tells you that someone else owes him an amount that is higher than your selling price and he wants that person to pay you instead. He then asks you to give him the car, plus the difference in price. (Sometimes the prospective buyer will offer you additional money as compensation.) Regardless of how legitimate they seem, these situations are almost always scams to get you to part with your car and additional money.
    • A prospective buyer who wants to work out a payment plan for your car is likely up to no good. AutoTrader.com strongly advises against agreeing to a payment plan, regardless of the terms. In these scenarios, the buyer typically gets you to agree to a payment plan, frequently with substantial interest, only to leave you with an initial payment (which may or may not be fraudulent) and disappear with your car.

    Where to Report Fraud

    In addition, if you are a victim of fraud, you should file a complaint with the Internet Crime Complaint Center. or IC3. IC3 focuses solely on cyber crimes and is a partnership between the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the National White Collar Crime Center and the Bureau of Justice assistance.

    Finally, contact your local law enforcement. If there was any interaction with a scammer posing as a prospective buyer within their jurisdiction, they should take a report, plus it will help their fraud department identify trends for scams in your area.

    If you wanted to buy or sell a car more than a decade ago, you’d turn to the local classifieds — circling reviews that enticed to you take a test drive or paying for a few lines pushing all options and condition. Or you would drive to the local car lots and see what they had to offer.

    Today, it’s more about tapping into the online marketplace, where photos, even videos, accompa ny listings that can offer you a daily driver or just view those dream cars. But, online convenience can brings some risks if you don’t follow the rules. After all, the Internet introduces strangers — in cyberspace and eventually in person when cars and keys change hands. The BBB research shows eight of 10 top scams in 2011 were Internet-related; and when potential buyers and sellers meet, they may encounter someone out to steal a vehicle on a test drive, rob them of other personal property — or worse.

    Avoiding Cyber Crime and ID Theft

    Follow these common-sense practices to ward off online fraudsters, whether you’re buying, selling or shopping around.

    For Everyone

      • Don’t share personal information. Don’t use your address or other data in online ads or in responding to them. Do not make deals outside of eBay Motors and PayPal, we even suggests creating a dedicated email address for online business dealings. • Avoid clicking links in emails from strangers. The wrong click can send you to a fraudulent site or install a virus on your computer.

    For Buyers

Scammers who take copied car listings from other dealers can get posted and eBay will remove fraudulent postings. Sadly, naive buyers who send money for a car outside of eBay or PayPal may never see the car or their money returned.

    For Sellers – Maintaining Personal Safety

    For Everyone

    • Never arrange to meet at a residence — yours or someone else’s.

    For Buyers

    • Make the deal in public. Meet in a very public, well-lit place, such as a parking lot at a mall or supermarket — even a police station.

    • Take someone with you, we always take a friend to meet potential buyers. You don’t know people; they may come with a handful of cash — or with a weapon.

    For Sellers

    • Beware of tagalong “friends. Our industry experts warn of unscrupulous “buyers” who have other agendas, such as bringing friends who may break into your house for electronics while the potential buyer is out with you for a “test drive.”

    • Use your best judgment about whether to go on the test drive with a stranger. We recommend the ride-along, lest you never see car again. But we warn against driving with someone whose driving record and habits you don’t know. Others recommend asking for some kind of collateral – the keys to the car they drove, for instance – before letting a potential buyer go for a solo drive.

    For Buyers

    • Always test drive the car. It’s risky to buy sight-unseen, without an inspection. Even if it’s a collector’s car located in a neighboring state, it’s worth the drive there to pick it up.

    • For used cars, ask for a vehicle identification number and purchase the CARFAX Vehicle History Report to see if it’s been stolen or damaged. Not every car makes it into the CARFAX database, so it’s best to have a trusted ASE certified mechanic check out the vehicle completely before you buy.

    • Ask for a copy of the title to the car. Make sure the car you’re buying is the one being sold. And if the seller can’t produce it, walk away.

    • Research the value of the car to ensure the asking price is fair.

    • Be suspicious of low-mileage claims. If an ad touts 30,000 miles on a 5-year-old car. ask the seller to take a picture of the odometer and email it to you. If they balk, you’ve spotted a scam. This should be a part of their eBay auction photos.

    For Sellers

    • Always use eBay Motors and PayPal for the transaction. Never wire money back to buyers for overpayment before their check clears. The BBB hears tales of scammers who send a check for too much money and then ask the seller to wire the difference. When the original check fails to clear, the seller is out the money he wired — and perhaps the car.

    A man who listed his car for sale on Craigslist is killed by a man who wanted to strip the turbocharger and other parts from the vehicle. A New York man lists his BMW online, only to be stabbed and stuffed into the car’s trunk by an ex-con who arranged a meeting on the pretext of buying the vehicle.

    Although such stories show the potential danger of private-party used-car sales, don’t let these extreme cases deter you. You can safely sell your used car and maximize its value by taking the right preventive measures.

    Craigslist. one of several sites that facilitate private-party car sales, says that its buyers and sellers complete billions of transactions with an “extremely low” incidence of violent crime. Still, selling your car does put you at risk of fraud. scams, robbery and possible personal attacks.

    The safety advice in this article comes from the police and my own personal experience selling more than 50 cars from Edmunds’ long-term test fleet. There’s also another very knowledgeable but less obvious source of good tips. real-estate agents. They often meet strangers to arrange a sale and sometimes the transactions put them in vulnerable positions. Just like private-party car sellers.

    The Big 4 Tips for Car-Selling Safety

    1. Vet callers thoroughly. When Steve Goddard, former president of the California Association of Realtors, takes a call from someone he’s never met, he makes sure the caller is serious about buying a property and isn’t trying to lure him into a trap to rob him. “I ask them lots of questions about what they are looking for and what their needs are,” he says. “The more I engage them in conversation, the more you get a feel for them.”

    2. Don’t go to a meeting alone. It’s that simple, says Rico Fernandez, a sergeant with the Long Beach Police Department in California. “Take someone with you. People are less apt to harm you if there is someone else there.”

    3. Meet in a public place. Goddard says that when he meets someone for the first time, he does so at his office. While you can’t do that when you’re selling a car, you can arrange to meet would-be buyers in a public place, such as a shopping mall parking lot.

    4. Trust your gut. Qualifying callers is a combination of intuition and experience, Goddard says. And if you’re not comfortable meeting with strangers under any circumstances, you should turn the sale over to an auto broker or trade in the vehicle. You’ll have to accept that you might not get the best deal, but peace of mind is priceless. So is your life.

    Screening 101

    If you do a good job screening buyers before you meet them face-to-face, selling your car will go much more smoothly. Listing your car on Craigslist or Autotrader.com will bring e-mails, text messages and calls from interested parties. Use your intuition to spot anything suspicious about these prospective buyers:

    • Don’t be overly eager for a sale or you might miss a warning sign. If a caller seems suspicious to you, simply hang up.
    • Only schedule a test-drive with serious buyers you are able to reach by phone. Invite questions when you talk with them. This prevents you from having to show the car to someone who isn’t really interested, or someone you’d rather not deal with. If the caller doesn’t seem to know what to ask, volunteer the basics about the car: year, make, model, color, number of doors, number of miles on the car and its key features.
    • Beware of professional buyers who just want to “flip” cars, which means reselling them quickly at a profit. Flippers bargain aggressively. You can usually identify these callers because they quickly want to get to your lowest selling price. If you have doubts, ask them if they’re buying to resell. While flippers might not pose a hazard to your personal safety, it’s better to avoid dealing with them.
    • Ask who is coming on the test-drive. Evasive answers might indicate that the caller is setting up a trap.
    • Tell the caller you will want to see a driver license before the test-drive. This might discourage anyone with criminal intentions from going any further.

    On the Test-Drive

    • When you ask to see the buyer’s driver license before the test-drive, make a copy of it, if possible, and leave it with a third party.
    • Have a friend or family member come along with you. If no one is available, at the very least let someone know where you are going and with whom you’re meeting.
    • Take your cell phone with you so you can call for help if anything goes wrong. If you are suspicious and don’t want the would-be buyer to know that, arrange a code word beforehand with a friend or family member. Using the code word will be your way of telling your friend you need help.
    • Meet prospective buyers during the day in a public area such as the parking lot of a mall. Park the car in a high traffic area where people can see you.
    • Don’t leave any valuables in the car on the test-drive. Don’t leave your wallet in the center console.
    • Accompany the buyer on the test-drive. This ensures that he can’t just drive off with your car, never to be seen again. Furthermore, the buyer may be unfamiliar with the area and will need directions for the test-drive.
    • If for some reason you can’t ride along, don’t give your only car key to the prospective buyer. If the “buyer” decides to take a joy ride and abandons your car, it’s easier to retrieve if you have an extra key.
    • Keep the test-drive short and go through populated areas. Most buyers don’t expect a long test-drive. If your buyer wants more time, let him ask you for it.

    Negotiation and Sale

    If the person is serious about buying the car, he will want to negotiate the price. Here are a few tips to make sure that transaction goes smoothly:

    • Refuse any unusual requests, such as driving the would-be buyer to another location. Often, such a request is framed in terms of getting the money or arranging a loan to finish the sale. Instead, tell the buyer to make his arrangements on his own and call you back when he is ready to conclude the sale.
    • If the test-drive begins and ends at your home, don’t let the prospective buyer into the house. Conduct the transaction at the curb. Have the paperwork ready beforehand and keep the car’s title, often called “pink slip,” unsigned and out of sight until you have full payment.
    • Once the deal is complete and the car is out of your hands, immediately file a “release of liability” form with the registry of motor vehicles. Then, if it’s used in a crime, you won’t be held responsible.

    We are programmed by nature to acquire, which is one reason selling is so much less fun than buying. But almost all automotive love affairs end, and selling a car online painlessly and for the highest price takes some planning and effort. Look at it this way: The extra hour you spend taking good pictures and writing a thorough description for a sales site may net you another $1000 or more. Not bad for an hour’s labor.

    Step 1: Pick the right sales venue.

    You’d no more list a ’96 Mustang on Hemmings than you would a Bugatti Veyron on Craigslist—unless you wanted to be called by 15,000 bored teenagers. All online classified sites have their weaknesses: eBay’s relentless countdown clock seems to make idiots out of some bidders, who ultimately back out; Cars.com and AutoTrader.com charge and mix you in with a lot of dealer ads; and Craigslist’s free ads mean you’re lost in a tsunami of daily listings. In general, if you are a gambler who abhors personal contact, eBay is for you. If you don’t live in paranoid fear of the public, then Craigslist is a perfect, no-cost outlet. The other sites lie somewhere in between.

    Step 2: Take at least 30 pictures.

    Good pictures sell cars. Make sure you get all four sides and the roof, and don’t forget the engine, the interior, the odometer, and even the undercarriage. Nobody wants to buy a car covered in cat prints and gardening crap from a dark garage. Drag it out, clean it, and shoot it. Even better, shoot it in the “sweet light” of a nice evening.

    Step 3: Write a description.

    “Runs xlnt” won’t cut it. Say how long you’ve had it, what work you’ve done, what’s good about it, and also what’s bad. Be honest; the more flaws you include, the more the buyer will trust that you’re not completely clueless or hiding a disaster.

    Step 4: Set a price.

    eBay’s own research shows that low reserves produce higher sale prices, because once the reserve is met, the bidding takes off. So be brave and don’t use a reserve, or set the reserve at the lowest rock-bottom sum you’ll accept. On a fixed-price site like Craigslist, research what other people are asking for similar cars.

    Step 5: Sell!

    Put your phone number in the ad. The NSA already has it and nobody else cares. If you are fearful of spam bots, spell it out this way: 55five1two1two. If you’re selling on Craigslist, post the ad on Thursday so it’s not lost in a billion other ads when the weekend arrives. If you’re selling through eBay, end the auction on Sunday evening, when people are sitting around with nothing better to do than look at cars online. Be available to answer your phone, and when the sale is done, be kind to your fellow man and pull down the ad immediately. Then start looking for a new car.
