GPS buying guide

Getting started

If you often travel to new places for work or pleasure, have trouble reading maps, or simply hate to ask for directions, you might consider a global positioning system (GPS) based navigator for your car. Once you put in a destination, the system will plot a route, give spoken turn-by-turn directions, and show your progress along the route. Most personal navigation devices (PNDs) let you choose your routing preferences, including the shortest distance, the fastest time, or even routes with no toll roads. Some portable units offer special routing options for bicyclists to help them avoid highways and for pedestrians, appropriate routes are provided that ignore one-way traffic restrictions. Some devices even offer a choice for the most fuel-efficient route.

You can also use a GPS device to quickly find a variety of points of interest (POI), including gas stations, ATMs, hotels, tourist attractions, and more. Typically, you can search for a specific point of interest, browse ones that are near your current location, or look up ones in a different area. You can even choose a nearby restaurant by the type of food you wish to eat. Once you’ve located what you want, the system can calculate a route to get you there and often provide contact information, should you wish to call ahead.

In today’s competitive market, GPS prices have come down to the point where even budget units include features previously available only on more expensive models, such as the ability to speak street names, issue speed warnings, and provide reality view, graphically representing major intersections. Higher-priced models can include such features as an FM receiver for traffic information, a wireless FM transmitter to integrate with the car’s audio system, and Bluetooth connectivity, which can be handy for hands-free phone operation. Services such as traffic, weather reports, and Internet searches are widely available, although they can require a subscription or use a smart-phone data plan. Free traffic information is also increasingly common, though it is sometimes supported by small, onscreen advertising.

Extra features aside, our testing has shown that all GPS navigators will typically get you to your destination, but not always by the most efficient route. While there is no substitute for local knowledge of roads and traffic situations, some devices add intelligence through historical traffic data and the ability for users to modify maps.

How to choose

Before you buy a GPS navigator, think about your typical driving conditions, how often you’re in unfamiliar areas, and the features that are most important to you.

SUV buying guide

Getting started

Sport-utility vehicles are available in a wide range of prices and sizes, ranging from small models not much bigger than subcompact cars to extended-length giants based on pickup truck hardware. Midsized models typically provide the best balance of interior space, fuel economy, and engine power. Smaller SUVs are typically less expensive and get better fuel economy, but they usually have less passenger and cargo space. Larger models provide more room and towing capacity, but get poor gas mileage, are less maneuverable, and have a significantly higher overall ownership cost.

Midsized models typically provide the best balance of interior space, fuel economy, and engine power. Smaller SUVs are typically less expensive and get better fuel economy, but they usually have less passenger and cargo space. Determining the SUV type you need (small, compact sporty, midsized, and large) helps narrow the field. Because each type has a spectrum of models to choose from, this is a useful step toward creating your shopping list.

Nearly Fraudulent Transaction: Purchased a set of NEW Fuel Injectors, Part Number:

35-81108 6D. Also purchased OVERNIGHT SHIPPING. The cost of the transaction was, $2,764.26 including overnight shipping. Received the product and inside were REMANUFACTURED Fuel Injectors. The remanufactured injectors are much less expensive and I was still charged the NEW cost.

I was contacted on November 12, 2015 by a Buy Auto Parts representative alerting me to the fact that the product was not in stock at there California facility and would be shipping from the manufacturer. I approved this shot delay as the delivery was setup for Saturday, Nov. 14, 2015 instead of the 13th.

The product arrived on the 14th as advised by the Buy Auto Parts representative. However upon inspecting the shipping information, this package was clearly shipped from their SanDiego, CA facility, NOT directly from the MANUFACTURER as I was lead to believe.

I understand PACKAGING mistakes happen. However when I called to rectify the shipment error the customer service representative, Russell claimed that the Friday phone call was to alert me that they only had the REMANUFACTURED product in stock. That was certainly NOT the conversation I had with the representative on Thursday, November 12.

I made an ASSUMPTION that a Self Proclaimed RESPECTABLE and HONORABLE CUSTOMER ORRIENTED retailer would want to make things right and honor the original purchase of the product advertised on their website. My assumption made an A## out of me!

BuyAutoParts.COM REFUSED to honor the product they sold me on their website. They made no rational explanation as to why they OVERCHARGED my credit card for the cost less expensive REMAUFACTURED Injectors. Also refused to send a call tag for the return of the product. Instead they Issued a return Label and asked that I drop the package off at the nearest FedEx facility. REALLY.

Summary: I ordered and Paid for BRAND New Product, Shipped Less Expensive and Inferior Quality Remanufactured Product without any notice at all. Charged My Credit Card for NEW Product not significantly LESS Expensive product they shipped. DID not make any attempt to Correct their “NEARLY FRAUDULENT” error by HONORING the PURCHASE I made in good faith on the site. This was a $2764 transaction and had the opportunity to do the right thing and rectify their FAILURE and the REFUSED. This is why I have taken my time to illustrate my experience with the negligent and misleading online retailer

I encourage a Representative at to make this transaction right by honoring the product they represent. Mistakes happen however the damage comes when the remedy/handling of mistakes is misguided and/or self-serving. Guess which way this transaction appears to be.

It took them awhile to provide a status update on my order being a canadian order done through one of their websites which in my case “canada parts online”. One guy said can’t look things up by postal code or order ID which is just absurd especially the order ID part. I got put on-hold a few times and every time will land me in someone’s voicemail. I was about to cancel and the guy said can’t do as they are the RMA department.

After calling multiple times and leaving voice mails they did finally got back to me with a tracking # for my order which was sent according to their website on the day of order.

This was after many calls and the whole experience made you feel like you’ve been run around and that they are a shell company. Btw, they also operate under name DB Electrical.

Anyway, my order should arrive tomorrow according to purolator tracking so will see whether product looks same as advertised.

The whole experience including their customer service does leave me somewhat dissatisfied even though I’m getting what I ordered at the price expected.

Best Car Battery Reviews: Top Value, Reviews, and Ratings

Car battery reviews are a great way to determine what the best car battery for your vehicle is. There will come a time when you will need to purchase a new car battery, as your old one has failed or will no longer hold a charge. The price of the battery is dependent mainly on the size, warranty and cold cranking amps. You can find batteries that cost between $50 and $300. You will need to choose a battery that fits your car, so make sure you get the correct battery. There are some excellent value batteries that provide great performance, have a long life and do not cost an arm and a leg.

Batteries from NAPA

NAPA brand car batteries are all excellent, as the company has batteries for all climates and vehicles. The 84 series is one of the best car batteries available. Many of the NAPA batteries have received top ratings from companies such as Consumer Reports. The best value battery from NAPA is the Select 8438/78, and this is also one of the best batteries for cold weather. You can feel confident that no matter the weather, your car will always start. These batteries tend to cost between $100 to $200 depending on the model.

The DieHard car battery brand is available from Sears. This is one of the most reliable car battery brands out there. It was originally marketed as lasting longer than your car’s lifespan. These batteries all start well in cold weather and you can even find a few that have a very high cold cranking amps rating for extreme conditions. What makes these batteries so great is that they offer high performance for less than $100. Sears also offers an excellent warranty, so you can get a full replacement if the battery fails within the first three years.

The EverStart battery brand can be found at Wal-Mart, and these are high quality batteries. Don’t let the discount nature of Wal-Mart fool you, because EverStart batteries can compete with other high performance batteries. These are excellent for very cold weather climates. It is also extremely affordable, at about $80. If you purchased it at a Wal-Mart in the lube and tire department, they can install the battery for free. These batteries are made by Johnson controls, one of the main manufacturers of car batteries in the US.

If you’re a member of Costco then you will be able to purchase the Kirkland batteries. These are some of the best value batteries on the market. They can handle extreme temperatures, have very long life spans and are very affordable. Don’t turn up your nose at these great value for money batteries, because Kirkland batteries are ranked right up there with Optima, some of the highest rated and most expensive high performance batteries on the market.

While there are several excellent car batteries listed above, you also want to inquire about the available warranties. A battery that comes with a full replacement for the first three years is a very good option. Make sure you understand the types of warranties and then look into the normal life of that battery.

Car Safety Comparison Ratings – Consumer Reports #buy #used #car

#compare autos

Several different elements affect a vehicle’s overall safety capability

Crash tests. Frontal- and side- and rear impact crash tests are conducted by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. You’ll find crash-test ratings for all tested models on their Web sites.

You’ll also find crash-test results going back 10 years in the used car vehicle profiles. NHTSA revised its testing standards for the 2011 model year. This means that test results from prior years can’t be compared with results from 2011 forward. You can see the NHTSA and IIHS ratings on our vehicle profile pages .

Accident avoidance. A vehicle’s ability to help you avoid an accident is just as important as its ability to protect you in a crash. For every accident there are numerous near misses that statistics don’t reflect. Several factors contribute to a vehicle’s accident-avoidance capability, with the two most important being braking and emergency handling. Using our test data, Consumer Reports provides an accident-avoidance Rating on all tested vehicles.

Rollover resistance. Rollover accidents account for about 33 percent of all vehicle-occupant deaths and are of particular concern with SUVs and pickups. To help consumers compare vehicles, NHTSA provides a five-star rating system called the Rollover Resistance Rating (RRR). The RRR is based on two factors: a vehicle’s static stability factor (SSF) and a dynamic rollover test. The SSF, determined from static measurements of the vehicle, essentially indicates how top-heavy it is. The dynamic test simulates a driver having to make a series of sharp steering maneuvers, as can happen in an emergency. Vehicles that tip up fail the test, but it only downgrades the overall star rating slightly.

We think a vehicle that tips up in this type of situation has serious stability problems, and we will not recommend it. RRR ratings are available at . Click on the model’s name or star ratings to get more information, and scroll down to “Rollover.” Note that prior to 2004 models, NHTSA used only the SSF to determine rollover ratings, so there are no dynamic test results.

Rear-impact protection. Although rear enders have a low fatality rate they have a high injury rate, especially for whiplash neck injuries. The design of a car’s head restraints and seats are critical factors in how severe a whiplash injury will be. CR evaluates head restraints for all seating positions in every tested vehicle. Any problems are noted in our road-test reports.

Another good source for information on rear-impact protection is the IIHS website. The institute conducts evaluations of head restraints and performs dynamic rear-impact tests that measure how well the seat/head-restraint combinations in different models protect against whiplash.

Blind zones. Every year, children are injured and killed because drivers don’t see them while backing up. A contributing factor is that some larger vehicles, such as SUVs and pickups, have larger blind zones—the area behind a vehicle that the driver can’t see. See our report on the dangers of blind spots .

To check a vehicle’s blind spot yourself, sit in the driver’s seat of the parked vehicle while someone stands in back and holds out a hand at about waist level. Have the person walk back slowly until you can see the hand through the rear window. This will give you an idea of how big that vehicle’s blind spot is.

Power-window switches. Some vehicles have rocker- or toggle-type power-window switches that will raise the window when they are pressed down or forward. This is a very risky design because a child who is leaning out of an open window can accidentally kneel on the switch and close the window, possibly causing injury or death. A better design is a lever switch, which raises the window only when it’s pulled upward.

See our cars Safety section for more information.

Top Minivan Ratings

Minivan buying guide

Getting started

As a category, minivans provide the most spacious, versatile, and cost-effective solution for families on the go, but the rise of car-based crossover vehicles has caused the minivan market to shrink in recent years. Many models have been discontinued, some have been redesigned and re-imagined, and those that march on are either quite traditional in design or are daring to be different in order to attract minivan-adverse customers. Minivans continue to improve in overall refinement while introducing clever packaging features and leading-edge entertainment solutions.

Why buy a minivan?

Key things to consider

What you’ll spend

Engines and fuel economy

The versatile seating configurations of a minivan mean that nearly all of the space behind the front seats can be used for cargo, if needed. This is done with second- and third-row seats that are either removable or fold down into the floor. The most convenient type of third-row seat is one with a split design, so that one section can be folded down while allowing someone to sit in the other section. Some models have seats that fold electrically.

When comparing models, try removing and folding the various seats to see which designs are easier to lower, raise, and/or remove. In our testing, we find that there is a significant difference, and some seats may be too heavy or cumbersome for smaller adults to remove without assistance. Minivans also typically have wide rear openings and lower floors than SUVs, which make loading easier. They usually have maximum weight loads of 1,100 pounds or more, which is more than most SUVs have.

Tesla scores, Buick soars in new Consumer Reports auto ratings

Tesla Model S repeats as Consumer Reports top car, Buick brand soars in ratings

Three U.S. models cracked Consumer Reports list of its top picks in 10 automobile categories this year, and Buick became the first domestic brand to land in the magazine s annual ranking of the best auto manufacturers.

Tesla Motors electric Model S sport sedan won overall honors in Consumer Reports’ selection of the best car models. This was the second consecutive year Tesla charged to the top.

Although there were many impressive new models this year, the magazine said, none was able to eclipse the innovation of the Tesla. The $89,650 Tesla that Consumer Report tested is a technological tour de force, a high-performance electric vehicle with usable real-world range, wrapped in a luxury package.

Tesla s achievement is tempered by the fact that it sells only has one model, compared with the full vehicle lineups offered by other automakers, said Jake Fisher, Consumer Reports’ director of automotive testing. But Fished said he anticipated that the Model X sport-utility that Tesla plans to start selling later this year will also be good because it shares many of its components with the Model S.

The question is whether Tesla can keep its reliability together as it expands with the Model X this year and later the planned Model 3, Fisher said. Their reliability is average now, and it doesn t take much to sink below the line.
