This site is being created as a place to network and share information about Therapy and Facility Dogs that work in schools. I am a school counselor in a small elementary school in Loveland, Colorado. I have been working with Copper, my registered Therapy and Facility Dog, in my school since October 2011. During that time, I’ve been able to document the positive motivational power of having a dog in school. Working with a dog in school has numerous applications and reaches an extremely diverse group of students.

My experience with Animal Assisted Therapy started in 2009 when I partnered with Colorado State University and HABIC (Human Animal Bond in Colorado) in a graduate level research project. We had one HABIC team work with a student. That student blossomed and I was convinced that I needed to learn more. I spent a significant portion of time on the internet and decided to adopt a dog that could potentially come to work at school. It was 18 months later that Copper first entered our building. I hope the information on this site shortens the entry time for other professionals interested in this modality and provides best practices to those of use who are breaking ground with our own programs.

A Dog in School?

I’ve had people respond to this question in several different ways. There has been the enthusiastic crowd who is excited at the possibility of having a dog in the school. There is the cautious group that is concerned about allergies, insurance and injuries. The skeptics respond with a look that says, You just want to bring your dog to school with you, don’t you? The fearful give you a pleading look and wide eyes. There is a substantial amount of work and knowledge that needs to be in place before bringing a dog into a school. This website is dedicated to providing a foundation for professionals who want to start their own programs and a place for established programs to share best practices and the tried and true tools that support that work.

There are a few different models that are used when having a dog work in a school setting. The majority of this website was built using the model where the school professional is also the handler and the animal works primarily out of the same building. In this case, Copper is dual certified as both a therapy and facility dog. He has additional training that is specific to working in a public school. He works at the school 3 days a week. I like this model because I can educate all the people in the building about behavior expectations when Copper is working. I also know the students that Copper works with. There is more information about this under the How to Get Started tab.

Another option is to have a certified team of handler and dog, work with the school professional and the student(s). In this model, the dog and handler typically come to the school as volunteers to work with a specific student under the guidance of a school professional. After that session they leave the building. The dog and handler may work at several sites in a typical week of volunteering.

Essential Information

Several schools offer Doctor of Education programs that incorporate online classes and seminars. These programs usually also require brief on-campus residencies. In the online courses, students may be able to view lectures and complete class assignments on their own schedules. They can usually interact with professors and other students via the Web as well.

Doctor of Education degree programs train educators to be leaders of teachers and administrators. Doctor of Education Degree

This online doctoral program is intensive to education and includes courses in educational leadership, program management and educational research.     Texas has several excellent universities that offer various doctorate programs in education, and the cost of tuition is among the lowest in the nation for Texas residents. In junior colleges there are 22,720 employees with a mean wage of $86,850. The Bureau of Labor Statistics and the Texas Workforce Commission each project at least moderate future demands for administrative education.

    As of March 13, 2013, there is a new study that reveals a need for college faculty, particularly for math. The Texas public school system is a $46 billion dollar enterprise, and they have one of the largest educational data bases in the world. The Texas Education Agency report school systems are often the largest business in a community, so administrative positions are available.

    A typical job for a candidate with a doctoral degree in education will often be found in research at an academic or clinical setting. Administrative positions are available, as the state is working hard to prepare students for college, particularly in areas where poverty is a problem.     Ultrasound Associates Degree

    An Associate Degree in Sonography prepares students for entry-level positions and is the most common degree possessed by working Sonographers. It provides them with a varied skill set so that they can successfully image organs and other body components of their prospective patients for diagnoses, pregnancy monitoring and other medical purposes.

    An Ultrasound Technician Associate s Degree program is a mixture of course work and on-the-job clinical rotations. Students who graduate with an Associates Degree from a CAAHEP accredited program are eligible and equipped to write the ARDMS exam, the major certification either highly preferred or required by clinics and hospitals hiring professional sonographers.     The prerequisites for an Associates in Diagnostic Medical Ultrasound or Sonography depend on the ultrasound school you are planning on attending. Some colleges/universities only require candidates to have their high school diploma/GED. Some Associates Degree programs require a few introductory college credits related to Biology, Medical Terminology and/or Physics in addition to a high school diploma. Other programs require applicants to have completed an Allied Health Associate’s degree (in an area related to patient care such as radiological technology, occupational therapy or registered nursing) or a Bachelor’s degree in any major.

    When applying for an Ultrasound Associates program, be sure to clearly understand the necessary prerequisites that particular school requests and submit all required transcripts, standardized test scores and letters of reference.

    How long does it take to complete an Associates program?

    On average, an Ultrasound Associates degree is a two year program and ranges between four and six semesters/terms.

    Can I complete an Associates degree online?

    Generally, most ultrasound schools do not offer an online sonography degree program due to the fact that a lot of the course work involves hands-on experience with imaging equipment in the lab as well as off-campus clinical.

    Will an Associates degree in ultrasound qualify me for ARDMS certification?

    Yes. As per ARDMS’ Prerequisite 1, anyone who has completed a two-year allied-health program, including a diagnostic medical sonographer/ultrasound program, along with 12 months full-time clinical ultrasonography experience, is eligible to write the ARDMS certification exam.

    What jobs can I get with an Associates in Sonography?

    An Ultrasound Associates Degree qualifies you for an entry-level sonographer position. Depending on where you apply, there are several synonymous job titles including ultrasound sonographer, ultrasound technician and diagnostic medical sonographer. There are many ultrasound technician specializations within the field that offer different job opportunities, and it would be worthwhile to explore the options before you begin your education.

    Yahoo recently identified Diagnostic Medical Imaging as the 5th highest paid profession requiring only an Associate s Degree.

    According to the ARDMS (American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography) you can become certified as:

    • Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer (focusing on the abdomen, breast, obstetrics gynecology and/or the nervous system).

    If you are a Maryland home owner that is underwater on your existing conforming or conventional mortgage, you may be eligible for a refinance without paying down ANY principle, without paying mortgage insurance, and in many cases, without spending any money out-of-pocket.

    HARP. the acronym for H ome A ffordable R efinance P rogram, is a financial aid program announced by the US federal government in 2009 to help millions of homeowners who are either near-underwater or underwater ( means you have zero – or even negative – equity in your home) to refinance into a fixed loan with lower monthly payments.

    HARP 2.0 – Help For Maryland Home Owners

    The modified HARP program – HARP 2.0, also referred to as The Making Home Affordable Program, the DU Refi Plus Program, and/or the Obama Refi Program – is specifically targeted towards Maryland homeowners having a loan-to-value ratio less than 125 percent.

    However, an additional guideline change to HARP 2.0 actually lifted the loan-to-value restrictions. So, Maryland borrowers with a loan-to-value ratio even greater than 125 percent can now apply to this program.

    HARP 2.0 gives Maryland homeowners the ability to refinance at today’s low mortgage rates without private mortgage insurance, exorbitant closing costs and fees, and in most cases without an appraisal. If you have been turned down before for this program, you will certainly want to re-apply for HARP 2.0.

    In order to qualify for HARP assistance, the basic eligibility requirements are:

    1. Your loan must be backed by Freddie Mac or Fannie Mae

    2. Freddie or Fannie should have bought your mortgage prior to June 1st, 2009 .

    Determine If Your Loan Is Backed By Fannie Mae or Freddie Mac

    Unfortunately, Maryland homeowners rarely know who “owns” their mortgage loan. Normally, homeowners receive their monthly statements, and make their monthly payments, to their mortgage servicer. This is usually not the company that provided the funds originally to make the loan.

    You can check “lookup” forms on the Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac web sites. However, keep in mind that these web forms are not always accurate as the address would have to be exactly the same as was recorded with Fannie or Freddie.

    USDA, FHA or Jumbo mortgages are NOT HARP-eligible.


    The most noticeable and major changes in the HARP 2.0 program are:

    • Elimination of underwater limits which implies that Maryland borrowers now have the opportunity to refinance regardless of the fallen values of their homes, whereas loan-to-value limits were previously prefixed at 125 percent.
    • Underwriting and appraisals have been eliminated and homeowners need neither appraisals nor their loans underwritten. This makes the refinancing process much faster and smoother.
    • Fees have been modified for shorter-term loans or abolished and the deadline for getting a HARP refinance has now been stretched to September 30th, 2018 .

    Interest Rate Reduction Refinance Loan

    The VA Interest Rate Reduction Refinance Loan (IRRRL) lowers your interest rate by refinancing your existing VA home loan. By obtaining a lower interest rate, your monthly mortgage payment should decrease. You can also refinance an adjustable rate mortgage (ARM) into a fixed rate mortgage.

    IRRRL Facts

    • No appraisal or credit underwriting package is required when applying for an IRRRL.
    • An IRRRL may be done with “no money out of pocket” by including all costs in the new loan or by making the new loan at an interest rate high enough to enable the lender to pay the costs.
    • When refinancing from an existing VA ARM loan to a fixed rate loan, the interest rate may increase.
    • No lender is required to give you an IRRRL, however, any VA lender of your choosing may process your application for an IRRRL.
    • Veterans are strongly urged to contact several lenders because terms may vary.
    • You may NOT receive any cash from the loan proceeds.

    Eligibility

    An IRRRL can only be made to refinance a property on which you have already used your VA loan eligibility. It must be a VA to VA refinance, and it will reuse the entitlement you originally used.

    • A Certificate of Eligibility (COE) is not required. If you have your Certificate of Eligibility, take it to the lender to show the prior use of your entitlement.
    • No loan other than the existing VA loan may be paid from the proceeds of an IRRRL. If you have a second mortgage, the holder must agree to subordinate that lien so that your new VA loan will be a first mortgage.
    • You may have used your entitlement by obtaining a VA loan when you bought your house, or by substituting your eligibility for that of the seller, if you assumed the loan.
    • The occupancy requirement for an IRRRL is different from other VA loans. For an IRRRL you need only certify that you previously occupied the home.

    Application Process

    A new Certificate of Eligibility (COE) is not required. You may take your Certificate of Eligibility to show the prior use of your entitlement or your lender may use our e-mail confirmation procedure in lieu of a certificate of eligibility.

    Loan Limits

    VA does not set a cap on how much you can borrow to finance your home. However, there are limits on the amount of liability VA can assume, which usually affects the amount of money an institution will lend you. The loan limits are the amount a qualified Veteran with full entitlement may be able to borrow without making a down payment. These loan limits vary by county, since the value of a house depends in part on its location.

    The basic entitlement available to each eligible Veteran is $36,000. Lenders will generally loan up to four times a Veteran’s available entitlement without a down payment, provided the Veteran is income and credit qualified and the property appraises for the asking price.     VA Funding Fee

    Generally, all Veterans using the VA Home Loan Guaranty benefit must pay a funding fee. This reduces the loan’s cost to taxpayers considering that a VA loan requires no down payment and has no monthly mortgage insurance. The funding fee is a percentage of the loan amount which varies based on the type of loan and your military category, if you are a first-time or subsequent loan user, and whether you make a down payment. You have the option to finance the VA funding fee or pay it in cash, but the funding fee must be paid at closing time. You do not have to pay the fee if you are a:

    • Veteran receiving VA compensation for a service-connected disability, OR
    • Veteran who would be entitled to receive compensation for a service-connected disability if you did not receive retirement or active duty pay, OR
    • Surviving spouse of a Veteran who died in service or from a service-connected disability.

    The funding fee for second time users who do not make a down payment is slightly higher. Also, National Guard and Reserve Veterans pay a slightly higher funding fee percentage. See Loan Fees for more information about loan costs. Some lenders offer IRRRLs as an opportunity to reduce the term of your loan from 30 years to 15 years. While this can save you money in interest over the life of the loan, you may see a very large increase in your monthly payment if the reduction in the interest rate is not at least one percent (two percent is better). Beware: It could be a bigger increase than you can afford.

    A Master of Public Health (MPH) degree is a graduate-level program that emphasizes the practical aspects of public health. This type of program is designed to prepare students for their role in promoting community awareness about injury, violence prevention, communicable diseases and other issues that affect health and safety. Since research is not usually a primary focus in most MPH programs, students desiring careers as professors or researchers of public health should pursue a Master of Science in Public Health (MSPH) degree.

    Recommended Accredited Online MPH Programs

    The Association of Schools of Public Health (ASPH) requires that accredited MPH programs have the core areas of statistics/biostatistics, epidemiology, environmental health, policy and behavioral sciences. Although MPH programs can be broad in the variety of topics covered, students gain sufficient knowledge to have competent careers in any aspect of public health. In addition to core areas, students may be required to enroll in courses that cover toxicology, program evaluation, health care administration and diversity issues.

    Since MPH programs are applied degree programs, students are required to engage in work-related activities. This may take the form of an internship, or practical experience where the student assumes job functions in the public health field, while under supervision. Additionally, some programs may require students to participate in a small, semester-long project such as a research paper or grant proposal that shows their competence in the field.

    Some programs require students to choose a specific track or emphasis area for completion of the program. Although the degree itself is not a true specialized degree, the three to five courses required for the emphasis area can provide students with more specific knowledge about an area of interest.

    Many post-secondary institutions offer specialized MPH degree programs, which can provide graduates with better career opportunities. Students may choose a program that offers them specialized training in one of the traditional core areas, or more unique specialties such as maternal/child health, public health education, communicable diseases, toxicology or disaster management.

    Most MPH programs are designed to be completed in two to three years, and may not have a thesis requirement. Some schools offer the option for an advanced, one-year program. However, these programs are typically geared toward students who are concurrently pursuing another graduate degree in a related field. These are referred to as dual-degree or joint-degree programs. One-year programs that do not require concurrent enrollment in another program are terminal degrees that do not require a thesis.     Graduation from a MPH program affords students a variety of opportunities for employment. Most graduates find employment opportunities in health care settings, non-profit organizations or government agencies.     Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Online Program

    Program Overview

    The Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) is similar to other practice doctorates such as the MD, JD and PharmD. The American Association of Colleges of Nursing has called for the adoption by 2015 of the DNP as the terminal nursing practice degree.

    You can enter the DNP as a post-Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) student or a post-master’s (nursing) student. Part-time and full-time options are available. Nurse anesthetist students must attend full-time.

    • The BSN-DNP curriculum is a 74-89 credits depending upon the practice specialty selected.
    • The MS (Nursing)-DNP curriculum to become a nurse practitioner (NP) is 71-74 credits depending upon the practice specialty selected. Most students will be able to transfer coursework to reduce the total number of credits needed to complete degree requirements.
    • The MS-DNP curriculum for those who already are NPs or CRNAs is a 43-credit program.

    DNP students who have not completed a graduate statistics course within the past five years will be required to enroll in a graduate statistics course the first fall semester of the program. All students are expected to come to campus for a robust five-day Resident Intensive Summer Experience (RISE) each year for the first three years of doctoral study. RISE attendance for part-time students may vary.

    With a DNP you will be prepared to:

    • generate and disseminate nursing practice knowledge to stimulate research and improve clinical outcomes
    • improve health outcomes through scientifically-based advanced practice within your chosen specialty
    • engage in and lead collaborative practice teams
    • influence clinical practice transformation and policy initiatives

    DNP/PhD Dual Degrees

    If you are interested in attaining broader research skills for application to clinical practice, consider taking advantage of our dual Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degrees. You will be prepared at the highest level of professional nursing practice and with advanced skills for engaging in research to create, apply and translate new knowledge to improve health care – in practice domains and/or academia. You will work closely with clinical mentors to develop specialty competencies, as well as faculty research mentors to create a program of research. The DNP/PhD Dual Degrees option is available upon admission to one of the doctoral programs. Dual degree students must satisfy both DNP and PhD posted admission and enrollment requirements.

    Treating an Addiction to Painkillers

    Opioid addiction isn’t a moral or mental weakness. It’s a chronic medical condition that results from changes in the brain in susceptible people. Once narcotic addiction has developed, escaping the cycle of detox and relapse is typically a long-term process.

    Breaking free of prescription drug abuse takes much more than willpower. Fortunately, medications and counseling can improve the chances of success. Newer drugs like buprenorphine (sometimes combined with naloxone. a combination called Suboxone), naltrexone (given by mouth as the drug Revia or by a monthly injection called Vivitrol ), and traditional therapies like methadone along with12-step programs are helping thousands of people stay on the road to recovery.

    Physical Dependence and Detoxification

    Narcotic addiction leads to real changes in certain areas of the brain. Prescription drug addiction alters the circuits responsible for mood and “reward” behaviors.

    In addition, long-term prescription drug abuse affects virtually all the systems in the body. Cutting off the supply abruptly leads to opioid withdrawal symptoms.

    Symptoms of opioid withdrawal include:

    But for someone with an established narcotic addiction, a list of symptoms doesn’t capture the agony of opioid withdrawal. The syndrome is intensely unpleasant, and people will do almost anything to avoid it.

    Opioid withdrawal lasts from hours to several days — and sometimes weeks — depending on how long and how much a person has used their drug of choice. After the intense initial symptoms subside, some physical and mental discomfort may persist for weeks.

    Medications for Opioid Withdrawal

    Opioid withdrawal is difficult to endure, and is a major reason for relapse and continued prescription drug abuse. Medications are used to prevent symptoms of opioid withdrawal during detox, easing the person out of physical dependence:

    Methadone is a long-acting opioid drug. It activates the same opioid receptors as other narcotics, effectively eliminating withdrawal symptoms. Providing the correct dose of methadone prevents opioid withdrawal symptoms and eases drug craving but it does not provide the euphoria. The dose can be slowly tapered off, freeing the person from physical dependence without withdrawal symptoms. Methadone is the most effective known treatment for narcotic addiction.

    Buprenorphine alone (Subutex ) or buprenorphine plus naloxone (Suboxone) is a newer drug that helps with detox from opioid addiction. Buprenorphine activates opioid receptors, reducing drug craving and preventing withdrawal. Naloxone helps prevent misuse of the medication. Subutex is typically used for acute opiate detoxification, while Suboxone is used either for acute detoxification or maintenance prevention of opiate relapse.

    Clonidine is a blood pressure medicine that acts on the brain. Clonidine reduces the effects of the “fight or flight” response, which is over-activated during opioid withdrawal. However, clonidine does not reduce drug craving and is less effective when used alone.

    “Rapid detox” programs claim to accelerate the process of detox and opioid withdrawal by giving large doses of opioid blocking drugs. Some programs place an addict under general anesthesia during the detox process. These programs have not proven to be more effective than traditional methods of detox, and may be more dangerous.

    Maintenance Therapy After Detox

    Completing detox subdues the physical effects of narcotic addiction and opioid withdrawal. But experts say psychological and social factors are the main drivers that push addicts back to using. Stress and situations that remind the brain of the drug’s pleasure are common triggers.

    When drug cravings strike, they can be extremely hard to resist. Most people who only go through detox and short-term counseling without maintenance treatment will most likely relapse to prescription drug abuse.

    Studies show that the chances of beating narcotic addiction are better with long-term maintenance therapy with either methadone or buprenorphine paired with naloxone (Zubsolv, Bunavail, Suboxone) . These drugs are used during the maintenance phase of treatment. People on these drugs are still opioid-dependent, but they are often freed from their destructive drug addiction. They can return to work, drive without impairment, and function normally in society. Naloxone has also been combined with oxycontin ( Targiniq ER ) to deter abuse by snorting or injecting the drug. A person can still become addicted by taking it orally, however.

    Methadone is the best-studied, most effective method of recovery from narcotic addiction. Suboxone, while newer, has gained wide acceptance as maintenance therapy.

    A form of buprenorphone than can be implanted under the skin (called Probuphine ) is now available to help prevent opiate relapse in people who have already completed detox and are stable on an oral form of buprenorphine. It provides a constant dose of buprenorphine for six months.

    Some people have a high rate of relapse when maintenance therapy is stopped, and so they remain on the medicines indefinitely. In others, maintenance therapy is tapered off over months to years.

    Naltrexone (ReVia, Vivitrol) is an opiate receptor-blocking medication used in maintenance therapy for narcotic addiction. Unlike methadone and Suboxone, naltrexone does not activate receptors at all, so it does not reduce opioid withdrawal or craving. However, because naltrexone blocks opiate receptors, a person won’t get high if he or she uses drugs while taking the medicine. The drug is is most effective when used as part of a broader comprehensive recovery treatment program.

    Counseling and 12-Step Programs

    Narcotics Anonymous (NA) is an international network of community-based meetings for those recovering from drug addiction. Modeled after Alcoholics Anonymous (AA), NA is a 12-step program with a defined process for overcoming narcotic addiction.

    NA is an abstinence-based program. In principle, NA is opposed to the use of maintenance therapy. Methadone Anonymous is a 12-step program that acknowledges the value of methadone or Suboxone in recovery from narcotic addiction.

    Most experts and treatment centers recommend participation in a 12-step-based treatment program or other form of counseling. Therapy can take place as an outpatient, or in a residential facility. Alternatives to 12-step-based programs include:

    • Cognitive behavioral therapy
    • Motivational interviewing
    • Family and couples therapy

    Recovery from prescription drug addiction can be expensive. However, it is far less costly in comparison with the cost of addiction and continuous use of drugs.

    Any Kilgore College RN students out there?

    I am a third level student will graduate in Dec. I think it’s a great program, I really like that we go straight thru, the first semester is tough because you have foundations and pharmacology, but after that each class lasts seven weeks: 2nd semster is psych/med/surg 1; 3rd semester is OB med surg 2; 4th semester is pedi med/surg 3 w/management. You have to be really focused because you can’t miss even 1 whole lecture day or you will be dropped because it is more than a 12% absence which is against school policy. So just get everything in order and go for it.

    hey Iam finishing all my pre classes this fall and taking classes this summer I will also be applying to the RN program at kilgore in aug to start in the spring. I have heard good and bad from the program but I am taking the CNA course classes in longview and people in the LVN program say it is intense but they have a good program and also heard from a a girl who dropped out of the RN program that they had a lot of pppl drop out because of the teachers well hey you should e-mail me or msg me on here i have been looking for ppl who are going in to the RN program in kilgore to share information and study well lemme know

    I will graduate in Dec it is intense, but my experience has been good. There are a few teachers who I would not want again, but overall the teachers are understanding. The key, I think, is to be prepared and don’t get behind because there is no time to make up anything. Good Luck!

    good luck! i just graduated from kilgore in may. there are several bad things i can say about the program, but i won’t. i’ll focus on the good. one good thing is that you’ll get done a lot sooner because it is a straight 16 month program. i wouldn’t advise you to try looking at any of the lecture material before hand. everything will be explained in class once you are accepted into clinicals. any other questions, feel free to ask.

    American Indian Nurse Scholarship Program

    The American Indian Nurse Scholarship Award Program was started by the NSCDA in 1928 to give students of American Indian descent the opportunity to pursue careers in nursing. The students are expected to return to work among their people to help improve health care. Some students work on reservations, and others find employment in hospitals in areas largely populated by American Indians. Intended originally to benefit females only, the program has expanded to include males and the career goals now include not only nursing careers, but jobs in health care and health education, as well.

    The current goal is to grant a $1,500 scholarship each semester, as long as the student remains in academic good standing. The scholarship money is restricted to tuition and specific academic expenses. To meet the financial demands of their education, many students seek additional government grants and subsidies and maintain part-time jobs.

    NSCDA Attingham Scholarship

    The Attingham Summer School is an intensive three-week program, based in Britain, that provides students unprecedented access to the collections and landscapes of English Country Houses. The specialized level of curatorial expertise offered by attending Attingham is truly unique and gives attendees a keen understanding of the significance of the selected properties and collections.

    Dumbarton House’s own Jerry Foust attended the Attingham Summer School in 2015 and believes the value of the experience, and impact on his work, is impossible to quantify. He was granted behind the scenes access to 26 English Country Houses and gained knowledge in decorative and fine arts conservation, house museum management, collections care, and interpretation.

    To support the NSCDA museum properties’ nationally in their collections and interpretive work, the NSCDA established a scholarship on 2013 to support staff participation in the Attingham Summer School. The NSCDA Attingham Committee encourages outstanding, highly qualifies museum professionals, employed by a Dames property, to apply to the Attingham Summer School.

    In addition to the American Indian Nurse Scholarships, the NSCDA also grants educational awards each year to graduate students working toward doctorate degrees in American History, political science, historic restoration and preservation or administration of historic sites. Examples include grants to enhance American history curriculum, History Day prizes, grants to teachers for enrichment study, and grants to international students.     Make any non-portable application portable through virtualization. Cameyo lets you shrink all the files of a regular application in a single package that can be used portably on any Windows system you run it on.

    The application works in a similar way as MojoPac. with the difference that the latter achieves this by installing the programs in a virtualized operating system, whereas Cameyo lets you enclose any application in its own virtual environment. Cameyo is free of charge and takes little time to install on the computer.

    You have to know from the beginning that the programs resulting from virtualization process are not 100% portable as once you run them on a clean computer they will leave traces in the registry. The process used by Cameyo to virtualize, relies on system snapshots taken before and after the installation of the targeted programs.

    These help determine the data the installed program requires in order to function properly. Next step consists in building up a package with all these files and create an executable file that launches them all on the host computer.

    Cameyo s interface is extremely simple, as it features only two options: start the installation capture and edit an existing package. These options can also be found separately in Tools folder of the application in the Start menu.

    The first part in the virtualization process does not take too much time to complete. During our tests the taking the initial snap of the system state required about two minutes to complete. Next follows the actual installation of the target program and configuring it to fit your needs.

    As far as the post-installation system snapshot is concerned, at each of our attempt this took quite some time. Its completion depends on the amount of the data added to the system. The software set used during our tests included FileZilla. uTorrent. Google Chrome and Maxthon 3 .

    For the first one we waited 7 minutes for the post-installation snapshot to complete, the second took the same, Chrome required about 6 minutes and Maxthon 3 lags behind with a total of 14 minutes. While taking the system snapshots it is advisable not to use your computer at all as this influences the resulting virtual package directly. Every move you make on the system drive between the two snapshots is recorded and added to the final result.

    Our experience with the virtualized results of Cameyo was not too pleasant. From all the aforementioned programs only FileZilla and uTorrent worked. Maxthon 3 would crash every time we tried to launch it while Google Chrome s interface loaded, but nothing worked as its tabs would crash and later attempts faced us with a fatal error informing us that the virtual key could not be opened, so the application would no longer load.

    To give it another chance, we packed the latest Opera and tried it. This one worked as it should and all settings made previous to post-install system snapshot were preserved upon launching on a different machine, just like in the case of FileZilla and uTorrent. But the launch took quite a while.

    Cameyo also features an editor for the virtualized packages it creates. This allows you to load a virtualized program and check the data it contains, both files and the entries that are deployed in the registry of the host system (HKEY_CURRENT_USER Software VOS section).

    All the registry entries and files available through Cameyo s Package Editor are actually the results of the modifications brought to the system drive between the two system snapshots. You have a chance to analyze them, and, in the case of files, it seems like you can delete the folders that have nothing to do with the virtualized application. We tried to eliminate the clutter but the impact on the package was insignificant.

    Cameyo proposes a very interesting and appealing form of virtualization, confining it to application level and thus allowing non-portable programs to be launched on different computers with the same user settings. But the resulting file will leave traces in the registry and hiccups are bound to occur. We had trouble with some of the virtualized apps as they refused to launch from a couple of reasons.

    The total process of creating a virtualized copy of a desired program could take quite long and the result may in some cases be larger than you have hoped unless you keep system activity to a minimum. In the case of Maxthon 3 the final result was 222MB in size and we could not slim it down through Cameyo s Package Editor.

    The Good

    It installs easily and does not require any computer knowledge to successfully complete a program virtualization job; all the steps come with instructions on what has to be done.

    In the case of paid products the license number is preserved so you do not have to type it on each computer you launch the app on.

    The Bad

    It happened more than once not to be able to launch the results of Cameyo on different computers. The post-install system snapshot is a very time consuming process in the case of some simple applications.

    Virtualized application remains installed on the host system and in case virtualization does not succeed as planned you have to uninstall them in order to repeat the procedure. Package Editor is more an informative component of the application as we could not trim the package down too much.

    The Truth

    Cameyo s approach on virtualization is indeed great, but the implementation needs some serious work in order to result in a stable application ready to tackle just about any sort of software. At the current stage there is much too scarce documentation and the nags we experiences are not at all small.

    Majoring in Elementary Education

    MAJOR: ELEMENTARY EDUCATION
    DEGREE: Master of Education (M.Ed.)

    Unconditional admission to the program requires the applicant to have a bachelor’s degree from an accredited four-year college or university, an undergraduate cumulative grade point average of 2.5 or better on a 4.0 scale, and satisfactory scores on the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) or Millers Analogies (MAT). The GRE or MAT result is used in the evaluation of the academic qualifications of all graduate applicants. *Note: International students must meet fulfill admissions requirements to be accepted into Department programs.

    Applicants should refer to the follow ranges to determine the minimum score, based on their GPA of record:

    GPA Minimum Test Scores (for MAT or GRE)
    2.5 or higher MAT – 370 GRE – 290
    2.25 – 2.49 MAT – 383 GRE – 293
    2.0 – 2.24 MAT – 394 GRE – 297

    Conditional admission may be gained with a lower grade point average, but the GRE or MAT score must be correspondingly higher based on the above weightings. Applicants with less than a 2.5 undergraduate GPA must submit test scores at the time of application; applicants with a GPA of 2.5 or above may submit test scores in the first semester of attendance, but it is preferable that they submit test scores at the time of original application. The student must remove conditional status by fulfilling required score on graduate exam (GRE or MAT) and earning at least a B (3.0) average in the first nine hours of graduate courses. Failure to achieve this will result in withdrawal from the program.

    Admissions to teacher education programs at the graduate level requires a 2.75 GPA or higher on the last earned degree. Additional evidence of academic performance may be required (other test scores). Applicants who are seeking initial teaching license should contact the Office of Teacher Education and Student Services for current requirements.

    Applicants who are potential candidates for the Master’s Degree in Elementary Education must be certified to teach or must meet certification requirements before the degree is awarded (initial licensure).

    Transfer credits

    Candidates for the Master of Education degree, and initial certification, must take a minimum of thirty-six (36) semester hours of course work. Candidates for the Master of Education degree who are adding elementary to an existing endorsement must complete a minimum of 33 semester hours of course work.     Qualified Hybrid Tech = Qualified Hybrid Auto Tech. has taken 24 hours live and 16 hours on-line; HEV101, EV101 and OEM specific Web training for the EMVs you service. (If you are located outside of North America we may allow a different path). No ASE required but encouraged. Cost of HEV101, EV101, 8 OEM Webinars plus two management Hybrid Classes is a flat $1,200.00 plus your live classes. After that it is $360 for one year of the ACDC Qualified Shop Program (QSP).

    Advanced Hybrid Tech = Advanced Hybrid Auto Tech. ASE Certified Tech in A1, A2, A6, A8, L1 and have taken 40 hours of live ACDC classes plus everything above for a Qualified Tech.

    Master Hybrid Tech = Master Hybrid Auto Tech. ASE Certified Master with L1, L3 and have taken ACDCs 6 day hybrid class “Up Your Voltage!” plus everything above.

    In order for you to be known as an ACDC Qualified Hybrid Auto Center and a Qualified or Master Hybrid Auto tech; ACDC will require the following:

    What the Shop / Tech Must do:
    1. You are / have an ACDC Hybrid Tech currently in our program.
    2. Only a ACDC Hybrid Tech will service, diagnose or repair the hybrid vehicles left for service. Exceptions are hybrid repairs and service that has absolutely nothing to do with the fact the vehicle is a hybrid. Note: An oil change is a hybrid service but it can be a supervise service by a Hybrid Tech.
    3. Have passed the 50 Question ACDC test with 80% or higher. 20 question re-up quiz. Quiz is on-line.
    4. Own (or the shop you work at) a pair of 1000 volt, Class O, rubber protective gloves in good condition and valid within 6 months of the last glove HV Test.
    5. Own a CAT III 1000 volt DVOM, with CAT III leads and ends, milli-ohm meter, insulation tester.

    6. You own or have access to a factory scanner with updated software for the hybrid vehicles you work on or a good aftermarket scanner that works well with the hybrid you are on.
    7. You have internet access at your shop and subscribe to the OEM web sites for the Hybrid you work on (It is OK to subscribe as needed) and are an Identifix customer (USA only) .
    8. Your service writers have been trained by you or ACDC and will consult their Hybrid Tech as needed when hybrids are left for service.
    9. You have a way of handling customers complaints that satisfies the state and city laws
    10. ACDC’s Tech qualification expires every two years.

    What ACDC will do for you:
    1. Train your staff, techs, etc. (this is an additional cost). You can take ACDC’s 6-day workshop or you can take an 16 hours (minimum) of ACDC classes in your area or on-line training.
    2. Send 2 Qualification Color Certificates
    3. List your shop on ACDCs consumer web site. www.hybridshoplocator.com
    4. Help with solving problems of any nature as ACDC started as a repair shop.
    5. Provide tech support (as time allows). We require Identifix as they train with us.

    if you attend the program full-time, i believe most programs are 2 years. upenn’s program is 16 months because you do not have the summer off. i did a little research when i was applying to graduate school, no matter the length of the program, the clinical hours and lecture hours usually add up to be about the same. hope this helps

    You most certainly can apply right out of school. I would apply to as many as possible. At least you can say you tried and by the way, make sure they know your a veteran- it certainly helps!     Stanford has a 15 month program. You come out with an FNP and PA certificate. No MSN though. Only good for CA (Except PA-C)

    What does RN-BSN mean? (Confused)

    3 I’m a high school student who aspires to become a nurse and later on a nurse practitioner. Because of this, I want to get my Bachelor’s first, (not ADN) and then move on from there. I obviously need to do my pre-reqs and all that but I’m confused about the path of becoming a RN.

    I’m confused on the meaning of RN-BSN. Does this mean that when you are a registered nurse, you go get your bachelors? That doesn’t make sense to me because I thought you needed your Bachelor’s to become an RN.

    I’m graduating high school this year and interested in becoming an RN(hopefully an NP later on in the future) but I’m confused on how to go about this.

    I hear some folks say that nursing school IS a 4-year college, but some say that you go to a 4-year school, complete your pre-reqs THEN apply to a nursing school. Which is it?

    I know my questions seem pretty simple to some but I really want to try to make the best decisions and take the best routes to help me in my future career.

    I went on several websites and they say that this program is for people who already are RN’s. I don’t understand this. I thought if you want your Bachelors, you go to a RN-BSN program?

    The routes of nursing that pertain to your situation and questions:

    1) RN program – usually at a community college or vocational school. Such programs earn you the qualification to sit for an RN license. If at a community college, you probably also earn an associate’s degree at the same time. ASN (Associates of science in nursing). There are also still a few diploma schools out there which are hospital based programs that grant ability to sit for RN licensure. RN programs tend to take 3 years. Either 3 straight years, or 1 year of pre-reqs and 2 years of full-time coursework.

    2) RN-BSN program – through a university. Either 4 years of integrated general education, nursing education or 2 years of pre-reqs/gen ed and then 2 years of nursing education, both ending in a bachelor’s degree (Bachelor of science in nursing BSN) along with qualification to sit for RN licensure.

    For those who earned their RN directly, there are programs out there specifically for them to earn a BSN (RN-to-BSN), usually 1-2 years.

    You might wonder why one would choose option 1 over option 2 since option two is only one year longer and gets you a bachelor’s as well. One reason might be that community colleges are usually less expensive than universities. Another is that community colleges are more likely to offer part-time coursework or alternate schedules for those working full-time jobs.

    Finally, each school has it’s own strengths and weaknesses and each student has their own strengths and weaknesses. One school might be well known for structure and if a student knows they do well with structure they might decide to choose that school. If a local school is well-known for training up confident, competent nurses, someone might choose that one over a big name university with new, unproven nursing program.

    General Requirements

    To be eligible for an Associate in Arts (AA), an Associate of Arts in Teaching (AAT), or an Associate in Science (AS) degree from HCC, a student must successfully:

    Complete at least 60 semester hours of credit as follows: (a) for the AA degree, 43 hours of required core courses and 17 hours of transferable electives, usually focusing on the student’s transfer major (b) for the AAT degree, 44 hours of required core courses plus 16-18 hours of required pre-teaching courses (c) for the AS degree, 43 hours of required core courses plus six additional hours of mathematics, four additional hours of natural science, and 7 hours of transferable electives, usually focusing on the student’s transfer major.

    Additional Degree Requirements

    A student who has received an associate degree or higher from an accredited institution must meet specific requirements to earn an additional degree from HCC.

    • The student must complete a minimum of 18 semester hours at HCC for each additional degree. These hours may not repeat credit applied from a previous HCC degree. These hours may not be satisfied through credit by exam.
    • All additional hours must be applicable toward the additional degree. If the student has prior credit in required courses, appropriate substitutions may be arranged.
    • All courses required by the specific HCC program of the additional degree must be completed.
    • A grade point average of at least 2.0 must be earned on all hours since the previous degree.
    • Academic courses from previous degrees may be applied to an additional AAS degree required academic core where equivalent and appropriate, which waives the need for approval, except where program restrictions prevail.
    • If the first degree was an Associate in Arts, an Associate of Arts in Teaching, Associate in Science, a bachelor degree, or higher degree from an accredited educational institution in the United States, the student will be considered to be Core Complete , thus needing to complete only the requirement of 18 additional semester hours at HCC toward a new associate degree.
    • Each additional academic associate degree obtained from HCC must be of a different type. Thus, a student may only obtain one Associate in Arts, one Associate of Arts in Teaching, and/or one Associate in Science from HCC. For example, if one degree from HCC was an AA, then any additional degrees must be an AAT, AS, or AAS.
    • Multiple Associate of Applied Science degrees may be earned from HCC if all AAS program requirements are met including earning at least 18 additional semester hours at HCC, 12 of which must be earned in the major program of the additional degree. In most cases, however, there is only one AAS degree allowable per workforce program. See counselor or program chair for clarification.

    Early Childhood Education Master’s Programs at Wheelock

Wheelock offers two Early Childhood Education graduate programs:

    Master of Science in Early Childhood Education for Initial Licensure (PreK-2) – 37 credits

    This program helps students develop and refine skills in curriculum design, observation and assessment, communication, collaboration, responding to diverse learning styles, and classroom management. The program emphasizes a commitment to working in a multi-racial and multicultural society, working partnership with families, fully integrating children with special needs into the learning environment, and collaboration with community members and agencies.

    Students participate in two extensive practicum experiences. These total at least 200 hours in each practicum and encompass two semesters of student teaching experiences in early childhood settings: one in a kindergarten or a pre-kindergarten-level site and one in a grade 1-2 site. At least one of the practicum sites will include children with special needs. In some cases, students may use their current job as a placement opportunity.

    This program can lead to Massachusetts Early Childhood Teacher of Students With or Without Disabilities Initial Licensure upon completion of the necessary state tests.

    Master of Science in Care and Education in Early Childhood Settings (PreK-Kindergarten) – 30 credits

    This program is designed for students who will work with young children (aged 2-8 years) in public, private, and parochial care and education settings as caregivers, classroom teachers, lead teachers, directors, and family liaison workers.

    The Care and Education program has two different options: one for beginning early childhood education practitioners and one for experienced or continuing practitioners.

    Beginning practitioners typically are students without an academic background in early education who want to pursue careers outside of a public school setting. At least one 300-hour placement in an appropriate setting is required, and you may choose to do an additional 100- to 300-hour practicum. Additionally, you can use your course experience to qualify for the Massachusetts Department of Early Education and Care (DEEC) lead teacher credential.

    Continuing practitioners are students who want to increase their knowledge of early childhood education and may have already obtained an initial teaching license or have an academic background in early education. Students who have their initial license and complete this program may use their coursework in to advance an initial teacher license to the Professional level after teaching for three years. Continuing students who have not obtained an initial license may want o pursue careers in early childhood outside of the public school system. Those student can individually tailor their program to meet their specific needs and interests.

    Racial and Cultural Identities (EDU 505): This course is distinctly different from the offerings of other schools because its focus is on the self rather than the other.     Q: When can I enroll in these programs?

Those wishing to begin in the fall semester (September) will need to speak with a faculty member first. If allowed to enter in the fall, applicants should either have met with the Field Experience Office and arranged an internship for the fall, have received approval for a “self-placement,” or recognize that they may not be able to do their internship until the following fall semester.

    Q: Do I need to be a full-time student to participate in this program?
    A: Students in the MS Care and Education program may be full- or part-time. Full-time MS Early Childhood Education students may complete the program in four semesters, and are strongly encouraged to begin in the summer.     A: While preference is given to applicants who have experience working with children and families (especially in a group setting), previous experience is not required.

    Q: What if I already have an initial license?

    When we think of the automobile era, we think of the 1920s. Whereas the car had been the plaything of the wealthy in the first two decades of the 20 th century, in the 1920s it became widely available to the general population. More modest pricing and improved roads and highways systems launched the automobile into the daily lives of Americans. Many post-WWI design changes help to distinguish this new era of driving. In 1922, enclosed vehicles were finally affordable and becoming more standard, especially in colder climates. Smoother contours made a more aesthetically pleasing form. Fender lines ran continuously from front to rear, squat hoods blended with front fenders, fender aprons partially concealed wheels, and a curved one-piece windshield replaced the old straight design.

    The Ford Model A, seen in the two images below, superceded the Model T in 1927. Note the enclosed body, longer hood, softer curves, one-piece windshields, and wider tires.

    ICD-9-CM Procedure Codes

    The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA) mandates that Volume 3 of the International Classification of Diseases, 9th Revision, Clinical Modification (ICD-9-CM) be used to code inpatient services on medical claims.

    While most professional medical coders and medical billers use the diagnosis codes in ICD-9-CM every day, the code manual also contains a series of codes used to describe medical procedures. All editions of ICD-9-CM contain Volume 1 and Volume 2. Expert editions of ICD-9-CM, designed for use by hospitals and payers, also contain Volume 3, which is dedicated to procedural coding.

    Because Volume 3 codes are used exclusively in the inpatient setting, certified medical coders who are fluent in using them are specialists in their field. Medical billers and medical coders who do not use these code sets regularly have still been trained in their use. A solid, well-rounded education is what professional medical coders and billers bring to their jobs, applying a consistent philosophy to coding that governs every medical claim for payment.

    Organization of ICD-9-CM Volume 3

    ICD-9-CM procedure codes are two numeric digits followed by a decimal, which is then followed by another one or two digits. The codes begin with 00.01, to describe a therapeutic ultrasound of vessels in the head and neck, and they end with 99.99, which describes other miscellaneous procedures. ICD-9-CM indicates that leech therapy falls under 99.99. Being able to read and understand the code manual is an asset for hospitals to submit accurate claims for accurate reimbursement.

    The majority of Volume 3 of ICD-9-CM is arranged by anatomical location. After the codes that start with 00, which cover procedures and interventions not classified elsewhere in Volume 3, the codes run in progression to describe procedures and interventions at different sites and through different constitutional systems. Codes that begin with 01 through 05, are defined as operations of the nervous system, while codes that begin with 06 or 07 are operations of the endocrine system.

    Like Volumes 1 and 2, ICD-9-CM Volume 3 provides specific definitions of each procedure being described. For example, 06.2 is used to describe a unilateral thyroid lobectomy. ICD-9-CM makes a point of saying that 06.2 should not be used to describe a partial sub-sternal thyroidectomy, which is more accurately described by 06.51. The isthmus is not considered a lobe, and when the isthmus is removed, the code used to describe that procedure is 06.39.

    By understanding the terminology employed in ICD-9-CM, and by understanding the documentation in the patient’s medical record, certified medical coders assign the code that matches what was performed. Being able to bear all the code variations in mind while reviewing medical records and assembling claims, professional medical coders and medical billers reduce fraud and abuse of the healthcare reimbursement system, limiting a hospital’s legal exposure to charges of the same.

    Uses of ICD-9-CM Procedure Codes

    The Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) which administrates the implementation of HIPAA, has offered clear guidance that Volume 3 procedure codes are only to be used in the inpatient setting to obtain reimbursement. CMS states that hospitals can use Volume 3 codes for internal tracking purposes, but the HIPAA standard is to use Healthcare Common Procedure Coding System (HCPCS) codes in every other setting when financial transactions take place with third-party payers.

    Not all procedures that are performed in a hospital are inpatient services. Patients who receive services on an outpatient basis, such as walk-in laboratory tests, have their healthcare claims submitted with HCPCS codes to describe the services received. Inpatients are patients who are admitted to the hospital and stay at least overnight. Patients can be admitted to a hospital overnight solely for observation. Any services these patients receive are described by the use of HCPCS codes because they do are not in an inpatient treatment status.

    All procedure codes are attached to specific charges that a hospital has determined represents its reasonable cost to perform the service. Hospitals are paid according to Diagnosis Related Groups (DRGs) for inpatient services, but diagnosis codes are not, themselves, associated with charges. By using ICD-9-CM Volume 3 codes, hospitals establish the amount owed for a specific inpatient encounter, while the DRG assigned to the patient’s inpatient stay determines the payment.

    By reporting ICD-9-CM procedure codes, and their associated charges, Medicare, Medicaid, and other third-party payers can examine past claims and adjust the DRG reimbursement rates according to the costs incurred. Accurate coding affects not only a specific medical claim, but also the reimbursement system as a whole when all the claims are analyzed in aggregate.

    Appropriate Use of ICD-9-CM Volume 3

    In the medical office setting, most billing software is loaded with a database of the complete set of ICD-9-CM codes, both diagnostic and procedural. Even if they are not appropriate, Volume 3 codes are available to medical billers and medical coders in the outpatient setting.

    Properly trained and certified medical coders and professional medical coders recogize the difference between Volume 3 codes and HCPCS codes. They also recognize the difference between ICD-9-CM codes that have two primary digits and those that have three. Those that have two primary digits are procedure codes that have no place in any setting that is not inpatient care.

    Inexperienced medical coders, including physicians and other healthcare providers, are tempted to use Volume 3 codes because the codes do accurately describe services. An outpatient medical claim, a claim from a Skilled Nursing Facility (SNF), or a claim from an Ambulatory Surgery Center (ASC), does not make sense when it contains Volume 3 ICD-9-CM codes. The claim will be denied coverage and payment because the coding language used cannot be deciphered in this particular situation. It will need to be recoded and resubmitted, costing man-hours and lost time to recoup the correct reimbursement.

    With training from a formal, credential program, professional medical billers and certified medical coders recognize when specific coding systems should be used. There are rules to assigning medical codes that are established by federal statute, such as HIPAA, as well as by the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act of 2010 (PPACA).

    As the provisions of the PPACA come into effect, the regulatory atmosphere surrounding medical coding will become more complex. PPACA mandates that ICD-9-CM be replaced by ICD-10 in 2013. Medical coders and billers who have a solid understanding of ICD-9-CM are expected to make a smooth transition to the new coding system. ICD-10-CM, which will replace Volume 1 and Volume 2 of ICD-9-CM, and ICD-10-PCS, which will replace Volume 3 of ICD-9-CM.

    Both the American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC) and the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) predict that minimal training will be needed for experienced medical coders and medical billers to make the switch from ICD-9-CM to the more specific, and extensive. ICD-10 system. With the PPACA deadline approaching, employers are looking for personnel with formal credentials to fill medical billing and coding openings. Formal education is viewed as evidence that billers and coders can master the material needed to perform their jobs accurately and effectively, in order to obtain maximum legal reimbursement for provided services.

    Welcome to the Psychology Department at Tennessee State University, where student success matters!

    Our primary mission in the Department of Psychology is to meet students where they are today and take them where they want to be by providing all students with the best possible mentorship, training, and education in the exciting field of psychology. From undergraduate research experiences examining the auditory systems of primate brains, to school-based preparation for a career as a school counselor—we have much to offer in a variety of subfields of psychology.

    Department Overview

    The TSU Psychology Department is housed on the 450-acre Main Campus of Tennessee State University on the third (3rd) floor of Clay Hall. The Department, located within the College of Education, shares additional research and computer laboratory space with other departments in a number of other buildings on campus. Library facilities are close to Clay Hall, as are the bookstore and other resources. The Psychology Department at TSU offers undergraduate, masters, and doctoral degrees in psychology.

    Nursing Program Admission Requirements and Procedures

    The Nursing Program at GGC requires eligible students to have completed areas A-F from the Nursing Program of Study (PDF) prior to the first semester of being enrolled in the first nursing course. Note: ITEC 1001, Introduction to Computing and PE, Physical Education may be taken after enrollment in the nursing program prior to graduation. A student applying to the Nursing program for Fall semester may not be enrolled in any science courses during the preceding summer semester.

    • Students who have been previously enrolled in a nursing program may apply to the GGC nursing program if they have received only one “D” or “F” in a nursing course. Additional information will be requested by the School of Health Sciences Admission Committee upon application.

    The following criteria will need to be completed before seeking admission to the baccalaureate nursing program:

    1. Declare a pre-major in nursing through enrollment registration.
    2. Be in good standing at Georgia Gwinnett College or other accredited academic institution with a 2.0 overall GPA.
    3. Minimum overall GPA of 2.5 in required general education courses for nursing and a minimum of a 3.0 overall science GPA (cumulative GPA of all required science courses: CHEM 1151K and CHEM 1152K or CHEM 1211K and CHEM 1212K; BIOL 2451K and BIOL2452K; and BIOL 2516K).
      1. Course history will be evaluated in determining acceptance into program (this means that all attempts of all required courses will be used to determine overall GPA).
      2. A student who has received one D or F in a previous nursing course will have the grade calculated into the cumulative overall GPA.
      3. Science courses required for program must be less than 6 years old. Note: GGC has a policy that if a student repeats a course, the higher grade is recorded on the transcript; however, ALL grades will be used in determining overall general education GPA and Science GPA for admission to the nursing program. Withdrawals from courses noted on transcript are not used in GPA calculations.
      4. Courses not used in overall GPA can be reviewed for academic performance history.
    4. Complete the ATI TEAS Test. only the first two attempts will be reviewed. Note: The ATI TEAS Test must be taken within one (1) year of submitting an application. The reading and mathematics portion of the exam is required.
    5. Obtain one (1) letter of recommendation from a faculty member of an accredited institution addressing your professional behavior, academic ethics and evidence to support why you would be a good nurse.     6. Complete and submit the volunteer verification form (PDF) documenting community service activity within the past 3-5 years.
    7. Provide a typed-written personal statement, 500 words or less, addressing why you want to become a nurse and why you have chosen to apply to GGC’s nursing program.

    Requirements after acceptance into the Nursing Program and prior to first day of class:

    • Pay tuition and fees for the semester by payment deadline.
    • Complete medical or health form.
    • Submit proof of health insurance. Learn more about the health insurance requirement .
    • Provide valid American Heart Association CPR card.

    Nursing programs, in general, are extremely competitive; therefore, we encourage you to apply to additional baccalaureate nursing programs.

    Nursing Application Deadlines

    Be aware that the College’s application deadlines differ from the nursing program’s application deadlines. Prior to submitting a nursing program application, applicants must first submit a GGC application. If you are a transfer student, here’s how to apply to GGC. It is recommended that an applicant apply to GGC two months prior to the nursing application deadline. Here are the deadlines for fall and spring nursing program admissions.
