Auto and Homeowners Insurance: Is AARP Looking Out for You?

Last Updated Oct 9, 2009 1:34 PM EDT

The way insurance companies barrage you with television ads promising to save you money, you might think they were paying you instead of the other way around. In the case of the GEICO googly eyes or actor Dennis Haysbert hawking Allstate policies, at least it’s private companies pitching their wares. But then there are the auto insurance ads touting the $388 saved, on average, by people who switched to plans offered through AARP by The Hartford Financial Services Group. The ads also say that AARP members who own homes might save an additional $148 by switching their homeowners coverage. In this case, the trusted nonprofit is lending its name to a commercial venture. Pay less, get the AARP imprimatur. What’s not to like? Read on to find out.

As part of our continuing analysis of AARP s financial services products (earlier stories covered AARP mutual funds and AARP life insurance and annuities ), we wondered how well the huge organization was treating its 40 million members with the homeowners and auto policies it sells. So we examined the coverage and compared AARP/The Hartford prices with those of Allstate, State Farm, GEICO, and Progressive in three zip codes to answer the question, Should you put AARP on your policy shopping list?

Our answer: If you are shopping on price alone, no. You can save money in some cases a lot of money by taking your business elsewhere. But the policies do offer a few appealing features that you might find are more than worth the extra cost. And The Hartford has an impressive customer service record.

AARP has marketed The Hartford s homeowners and auto policies for 25 years and deserves credit for choosing a quality partner. The Hartford was among the top five insurers in J.D. Power and Associates 2008 homeowners and auto insurance customer service surveys. They have a reputation for working with their customers and trying to solve problems without litigating claims, compared to some of their competitors, says Amy Bach, executive director of United Policyholders. a San Francisco-based organization that advocates for consumers on home and auto insurance. The number of complaints filed against The Hartford, as tracked by the National Association of Insurance Commissioners, is below the industry average and has been declining for the past several years.

Middling Marks for Prices

AARP s homeowners and auto policies are often not the least expensive, however, which echoes what we found with its life insurance offerings. There is a cost to having some of the features in the program, acknowledges Richard Hisey, president of AARP Financial, the for-profit arm of AARP. We believe that if you re comparing apples-to-apples features, we will be cost-competitive.

For our price-shopping survey, we asked AARP/The Hartford, Allstate, State Farm, GEICO, and Progressive for quotes for a 53-year-old AARP member driving a 2008 Nissan Rogue and living in a $250,000 wood-frame house. And since the cost of the same insurance can vary by zip code, we requested quotes in Charlotte, N.C.; Scottsdale, Ariz.; and Schaumburg, Ill. We told the insurers to apply any standard auto discounts available based on his driving record and profile. Since AARP s auto rates were for 12 months and the others were for six months, we divided AARP s figures in half.

For auto insurance, AARP/The Hartford was the priciest insurer in Scottsdale and Schaumburg and in the middle of the pack in Charlotte. Progressive was the least expensive in Scottsdale, costing a whopping 42 percent less than AARP/The Hartford. GEICO was the cheapest in both Charlotte and Schaumburg, charging 28 percent less and 15 percent less, respectively, than AARP/The Hartford.

North Carolina Bill of Sale Form: How to Get One, Fill it Out, and the Required Information

January 27, 2012

In North Carolina. a bill of sale is not a requirement for you to sell a car. However, if you are contemplating selling a vehicle it is probably an idea to consider strongly.

An NC bill of sale form is not mandatory to be filed in the state. Strictly speaking, the only document you need to conduct a car sale in North Carolina is a correctly filled out and notarized certificate of title. The certificate of title assumes that you are the owner of the vehicle and the vehicle will be transferred to a second party for a specified amount.

Vehicle Bill of Sale Template

If you file a bill of sale form, the information on the form needs to include the name and address of the owner, the make and model of the vehicle being sold, and an accurate mileage at the time of sale.

Because this is a written agreement, it is a very good idea for you to ensure that:

  1. The check used to close the sale clears the buyer’s bank; as pointed out in various blogs there are some very nasty sales scams occurring at the moment involving used car sales.
  2. All the fields are filled out correctly.
  3. The transferee on the title is listed as you, the owner.
  4. The person to whom the vehicle is transferred is the buyer.
  5. The mileage is accurate, for which you may ask a police officer for an affidavit, just in case the question comes up.

Why Use a Bill of Sale

A bill of sale is an official and legal document which helps you before all legal and final papers are prepared. You should use a bill of sale because it offers a measure of protection to the seller as well as the customer. For example, if you were to sell a vehicle and after three or four days the buyer was to try to back out of the deal, then you have a legal document to which to refer that solidifies the purchase. If the buyer took your car for a test drive and brought the car back with damage, you can also ask for extra money and prove the earlier condition of the car with the help of the bill of sale. It is also suggested that you take good pictures of your car while making the sale.

Likewise, if the buyer has issues that must be addressed before a sale can be finalized, those issues can be addressed in a bill of sale that will give the seller coverage in case the buyer decides it is not the vehicle that was represented.

How to Get a Bill of Sale Form

This form can be found here. The site provides you with a form that you can use as a North Carolina vehicle bill of sale template. Be aware, though, that this is not a free option, it’s a “fee” option.

Auto emergency kit: how to assemble an emergency preparedness kit on your own.

A basic tool kit (or emergency preparedness kit) might help you fix a problem that would otherwise leave your car stranded.

For instance, what if the problem is as simple as a loose battery cable? Having a screwdriver or a wrench will get you out of that situation in no time.

The older your car is, the more likely a tool kit will come in handy. If your worn radiator hose is starting to leak or an exhaust pipe is coming loose, duct tape is a great temporary fix. Also put jumper cables in your tool kit. Even if your car doesn’t break down, they’re good to have to help somebody else.

Advance Auto Parts carries a complete line of tools, emergency supplies and pre-packed emergency kits. Plus, of course, a full selection of quality auto parts.

Why should you have an auto emergency kit?

Car reliability has come a long way from the days when blowouts and boil overs were common occurrences, but run flat tires and modern cooling systems can’t prevent every type of roadside emergency.

A recent survey by the AAA revealed that 28 percent of those responding had experienced at least one automotive breakdown during the prior 12 months. Getting stranded on a lonely road, without the appropriate equipment, is every motorist’s worst nightmare.

All of this points to why an emergency preparedness kit is a must for most drivers.

Choose the right tools and items for your emergency kits.

The items you put in your auto emergency kit depend on your climate and geography. For hot, desert areas, bottled water is a must. In cold weather, a blanket is essential.

Visit Advance Auto Parts for the supplies you need for your emergency kits, as well as for our complete line of quality auto parts.

    What to Do About Squirrels

Adapted from the book Wild Neighbors

Tree squirrels are cute, fuzzy, and fun to watch, but humans have something of a love/hate relationship with them. We love their crazy antics but we hate when they’re raiding our birdfeeders.

If you’ve got squirrels driving you nutty, remember that they’re only doing what’s natural: looking for a meal and a safe place to sleep at night. Whether you need to evict them from your attic or stop them from stealing your bird food, be patient and look for a way that won’t harm the critters or their young. Here’s what to do about:

    Humane Wildlife Services in action

Watch how our Humane Wildlife Services team encouraged one mama squirrel to relocate her brood from a homeowner’s attic into a nearby tree.

    Are you a squirrel watcher?

Just because you don’t want squirrels living in your attic doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy them outside. They’re fascinating to watch, photograph, and study. and unlike most wildlife, they aren t shy!

Zero-interest balance transfers credit cards can have sting

As many Australians struggle with credit card debt after a Christmas and holiday splurge, zero-interest balance transfer offers may seem like the answer.

Lenders promote these deals at this time of year and there are more than 100 on the market right now, according to Kirsty Lamont, a director of comparison site Mozo.

“Lenders dangle these balance transfer offers as carrots to try and entice consumers to sign-up to cards that, in many cases, can be very expensive,” Lamont says.

They can work for those who have the discipline to pay off the balance in full before the interest-free period ends. But those who continually struggle to pay off their credit card debts may be better off with a “vanilla” low-interest rate card or even a personal loan with a fixed repayment schedule.

Dennis Reddy, a 28-year-old accountant from Sydney, is making a balance transfer deal work for him.

Reddy was paying about $150 a month in interest on his credit card debt and finding it difficult to clear the debt.

At the end of last year he decided to make a fresh start and get the debt under control. So he checked online for a good zero-interest balance transfer card.

“I didn’t care who the provider of the card was as long as the deal was competitive,” Reddy says.

He then transferred his balance to a credit card from another bank with an interest-free period of 18 months.

The card had a balance transfer fee of 2 per cent, but the $99 annual fee was waived for the first year.

“I thought about hanging onto the my old card after transferring the balance to the new card, but thought that would lead to more debt so I cancelled that card,” Reddy says.

Even though his new card has an annual interest rate of more than 20 per cent after the interest-free period, his plan is to extinguish the transferred debt completely before that kicks in. He intends to keep his transfer balance card, but only for use in emergencies.

To make purchases, he has retained his debit card that is attached to the savings account with his original bank into which his pay goes.

“The lesson learned is that if you don’t have the money you don’t spend it [using credit],” Reddy says.

    Caution needed

Sally Kirkright, chief executive of AccessEAP, a corporate psychology consultancy, says the start of the year is a time when many are particularly vulnerable to financial stress.

As the afterglow of the holiday period gradually fades, many face the reality of their holiday spending spree.

Australians spent nearly $10 billion on Christmas presents last year, according to extrapolation of results of a survey conducted by comparison site Finder.com.

And Roy Morgan Research, extrapolating from a survey it carried out on behalf of the Salvation Army, estimates that about two million people are leaving the festive season with worrying debts.

“Returning to work after the fun of the holiday period brings a dose of reality,” Kirkright says.

“Someone who has spent more than they planned can feel out of control and stressed that they haven’t managed their funds as well as they perhaps should have,” she says.

And for many people the financial stress will be first felt on their credit cards.

Finder estimates Australians are returning home from holidays with $7.5 billion of debt on their credit cards.

It also estimates there will be about $180 million in interest paid on the debt that was incurred on holidays in the first year.

    Lifeline

Bessie Hassan, money expert at Finder, says interest-free balance transfer cards can be a lifeline for those who’ve splurged over Christmas.

But it is important to be aware of the length of the interest-free period on transfers, which typically ranges from 6 to 24 months, she says.

Interest is also charged on any purchases on the card, even if the purchases are made during the interest-free period.

Mozo’s Lamont says some balance transfer cards use a “revert” rate that is equal the cash withdrawal rate, which can be up to 24 per cent.

That’s why it is important to work out exactly how much you need to repay every month to ensure your balance hits zero by the end of the interest-free term.

The comparison sites show balance-transfer fees are usually between 2.5 and 3 per cent of the transfer amount and annual fees range between $50 and $250.

Lamont says lenders have a range of zero-interest balance transfer cards, including those with rewards points with often higher revert interest rates and annual fees than non-rewards balance transfer cards.

Somebody who takes a balance transfer offer to pay off their credit card debt really should not be transferring that debt to an expensive rewards card, Lamont says.

“Cards with rewards points encourage cardholder to spend more when they should be using a balance transfer card to pay off existing debt and not to make new purchases,” she says.

    Competitive offer

Consumers need to look for a balance transfer deal that is competitive on the length of the interest-free period as well as on the interest rate and fees.

Otherwise, you risk racking-up new debt and getting nowhere, Lamont says.

“It’s up to the card-holder to work out the repayments that will pay off the card within the balance transfer period and to stick to that repayment schedule,” Lamont says.

“For those struggling to pay off their credit card debt the question is whether they are going to be able pay off the debt within the balance transfer period,” she says.

She points out that there are “vanilla” non-rewards cards with low annual fees and with relatively low purchase interest rates of 7 or 8 per cent.

She says for those who really struggle, a personal loan with a fixed schedule of repayments could be the best option.

“Those who struggle to pay off credit card debts would do well to avoid future temptation by cutting up their credit card and using a debit card instead,” Lamont says.

Kirkright says if you have debt in a couple places, such as credit cards and a personal loan, consider reviewing and consolidating these loans to get them under control.

“The credit card may be a good starting place given it may have the highest interest rate,” she says.

Blair Auto Mall out, new cafe in

There’s lots of exciting business news happening in Blair, which served as the inspiration for my new column, “Blair in Business.” I’ll be reporting on local openings, closings, relocations and other business happenings.

Many Blair residents are inquiring about Blair Auto Mall, which is relocating to Gretna in late January or early February. The used-auto dealership has been mailing out advertisements promoting the liquidation of its inventory.

According to owner Brian Gibbe, the dealership wants to capitalize on the growing city of Gretna, which recently opened its outlet mall in time for Christmas shopping.

“It’s just expanding so much,” Gibbe said Wednesday. “We just think it’s a good move.”

The Auto Mall, which has been family-owned and operated for more than 23 years and employs 12 people, started in Norfolk. It moved to L Street in Omaha after about a decade and remained there for about 10 years. It moved to Blair five years ago.

“It’s been phenomenal,” Gibbe said of its business in Blair. He said there are buyers interested in the property, but he would not elaborate on what type of business could move into the building, which is located at the corner of highways 133 and 30 at the roundabout, next to the Woodhouse and Sid Dillon dealerships.

    Bed and breakfast opens

Bakers Bed and Breakfast is opening to its first guests before Christmas at 1929 Grant St. The inn features a second-floor suite with a deck, living area and kitchenette. Reservations can be made for one party at a time, up to four people. Breakfasts are served in the first-floor “country kitchen.”

Owner Karen Baker told me this week that the home was built in 1900.

“We had a separate apartment upstairs, but I didn’t really want to be a landlord,” she said. “I like bed-and-breakfasts, and I’m a good cook.

“Everybody’s been super-excited,” she said of the community’s reception to her business. “I’m hoping it will be full most of the time.”

The Blair Area Chamber of Commerce will hold a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 10 a.m. Dec. 20.

    Blair Pawn Shop expands

Washington Street has been abuzz with activity recently.

Blair Pawn Shop, 1647 Washington St. has expanded to the 2,500-square-foot former Midwest Medical Supply building next door, which grows its total inventory space to about 4,500-square-feet.

Paul Hamer has owned the store for six years.

“Right, now, we’re just using it as storage,” he said of the acquired space.

Hamer said revenue has grown 15 to 20 percent every year since it opened. The shop stocks everything from guns to video games to jewelry; Hamer compares his inventory to a “well-diversified stock portfolio.” The busiest time of the year is November through February.

    Soup-and-sandwich cafe

A new restaurant may occupy the former Noodle Koodle building at 1621 Washington St. Jeff Brehm opened the pasta cafe on Jan. 3; it closed over the summer.

According to Harriet Waite, executive director of the Blair Area Chamber of Commerce, a soup-and-sandwich cafe may open soon in that location. I’ll have an update as we get more info.

    Haney Shoes closes

Blair’s only shoe store, Haney Shoes, 1627 Washington St. quietly closed recently. A sign in the window refers customers to its store in Omaha. The retailer was known for providing Cargill workers with footwear.

    Quilt shop opening soon

Blair’s only appliance store, Ortmeier’s, relocated this year from its building at 1716 Washington St. to Lincoln Street. According to the Chamber, a quilt shop is moving into the space and may be opening early next year. I’ll have more news about this business as it gets closer to an opening date.

    Car Scratch Repair Tips

This article is meant to help you touch up your car scratches using automotive touch up paint .

Getting the Best Car Scratch Repair Results

If you are reading this, you probably just got an unsightly scratch on your car s paint. Like most people, you are probably not a scratch wizard or a bodywork specialist, but with a little guidance and good products you can do a great DIY car paint repair job.

How to Fix Minor Car Scratches

Maybe you need to fix slightly keyed car paint and are now in need of a small car scratch repair. Avoid spending hundreds of dollars at a shop for a car paint scratches removal service. You can easily fix minor car scratches with a touch up paint pen. Clean off the area using soapy water and then a wax grease remover. Apply several coats of your paint color with the pen, letting it dry between coats. Next use clearcoat over the new paint. Finally, use rubbing compound (essentially car scratch polish) to polish the area so it is shiny. For more information about using paint pens, watch our touch up paint videos .

DIY Car Scratch Repair for Several Paint Chips

If your car has a bunch of paint chips and you want to fix it, auto paint in a bottle is the way to go. The touch up paint bottles are 2 ounces in size, and are how to take off many scratches on a car. Follow the same guidelines for the touch up paint pen, except you will be using a brush rather than a pen tip for the car scratch repair.

Repairing a Large Area of Chips and Scratches

If your car has some serious paint scratches and chips, we advise using spray paint cans of touch up paint for the job. Spray cans are 12.5 ounces and can cover a large area of damaged paint. If your car is dented, you will want to order spot putty and some light weight autobody filler. You will use these products first before applying automotive paint with a spray can.

Is Bring a Trailer Auctions the best way to sell your collector car online? We listed this MGC GT and found out

BaT Auctions isn’t taking aim at the titans, and that’s great for enthusiasts

The barrier to entry for new online auction sites had seemed pretty impregnable — 15 feet of electrified chain-link topped with razor wire impregnable. Hell, if Amazon failed miserably at it, why would Bring a Trailer. a relatively small Bay Area-based site (albeit one with an impressive cult following) take a shot at eBay?

Probably because it thought it could be done better. Isn t that the dream of most startups that take on entrenched market leaders? Having sold my share of cars on eBay Motors over the years, and now having sold my first on BaT — a 1968 MGC GT — I m in a reasonable position to talk about how it s done.

BaT is never going to compete with eBay on volume, nor does it want to. It takes a selective/curated approach to what it does, not unlike the leading catalog auction houses in the live-auction world. If BaT doesn t think its audience will find a car interesting, the car won t be listed.

A live-updating comment section, a BaT hallmark found at the bottom of each post, adds a unique and often helpful aspect to each listing. Unlike eBay, where sellers can choose to publish their answers to bidder questions (or not), followers get to publicly grill the seller on BaT; the threads often break 100 comments.

I ve always said that the old-car hobby has its share of insufferable know-it-alls, and to be sure there is some of that in the BaT community, but legitimate subject matter experts almost always show up and I generally learn something from the comments. Abusive or patently unhelpful comments can also be flagged for removal by the community. (The MGC auction had a total of 95 comments and bids; you can read through the thread, as well as the totally transparent bid history, at the bottom of the archived listing to get a good feel for the typical back-and-forth.)

Movers and shakers: Bring a Trailer founder Randy Nonnenberg

He can t tell you what got him hooked, but California native Randy Nonnenberg has always had a thing for automotive classifieds. He d scour papers for interesting cars when he should have.

With relatively low volume and just $250 for a listing fee, plus a 5 percent buyer s premium paid by the auction winner, BaT s sell-through rate needs to be high — and at over 84 percent, it is. They appear to achieve that rate by doing some of the same things that the better live auction companies do: they write good descriptions, curate compelling cars and manage sellers expectations effectively. In my case, I suggested a particular reserve price and was gently told that I needed to consider something slightly lower (which I did).

BaT seems to follow other practices of the better live auction companies, too, like lining up a critical mass of interested/qualified bidders (all of whom have credit cards on file with BaT to ensure legitimacy).

Of late, eBay seems to be producing more lookers than bidders; I ve conducted eBay auctions that have had over 4,000 views and 200-plus followers, yet haven t translated into good results. In fact, the last two cars that I sold on eBay went to dealers, a sure sign that a car sold for under the money. Few things piss me off more than seeing my car for sale on a dealer s site, two hours after the auction ends (with my photos) for 20 percent more than I realized — money clearly and painfully left on the table.

BaT, by contrast, seems like more of a retail market. And the last-second sniping that is so annoying about eBay? It doesn t exist on BaT. The clock resets to three minutes after each late bid.

Further, and unlike eBay, where an unsuccessful seller s only option is to relist the car, BaT does what live auction companies do, continuing to assist in marketing the car in the rare instance that it doesn t meet reserve.

On the whole, BaT founder Randy Nonnenberg has created something that eBay, as a publicly traded company with big expectations, can t: a vibrant, serious online niche market for interesting collector cars.

Refinance Calculator – Traditional, Low Cash Out & No Cost Options

We’ve been asked thousands of times: “Is it better to pay closing costs out of pocket, finance them into the loan amount, or trade them for a higher interest rate?” There’s no one simple answer, since each refinance choice has its own benefits and total costs over time. One may be more or less expensive depending upon how long you’ll hold onto the mortgage.

The TriRefi calculator allows you to run the numbers for a Traditional Refinance. a Low-Cash-Out Refinance and a No-Cost Refinance so you can determine which is best for you. Fill in the information once and instantly compare the costs and savings.

The Traditional Refinance calculator assumes you pay the closing costs out of pocket today. While you get the benefit of the lower interest rate, you have to overcome your outlay today before you realize any benefit. This is your breakeven point, and in order to get any real savings, you’ll need to stay in the new mortgage beyond this point. We assume that the fee for refinancing will be approximately 2 points (2 percent of the loan amount) but if it is different, you can change it; just type the expected dollar amount into the yellow box.

You pay the fees once, and then they are gone.

The “Low-Cash-Out Refinance” calculation (LCOR) uses the Estimated Costs you plugged into the Traditional Calculator. However, instead of you paying them today out-of-pocket, it adds them into the loan amount you are borrowing. This is a popular choice for homeowners who have some equity available and don’t want to (or can’t) come up with the cash needed to get a new mortgage.

Since you are financing the costs, you’ll not only pay them but also interest on them. However, you are only paying them a little at a time, and depending upon how long you remain in the mortgage, they may cost you more or less than if you paid them right up front, as you would have in a traditional refinance.

A “No-Cost” refinance might be your best bet if you don’t have cash to spend or equity to use for your refinance. You can still refinance, but you won’t get today’s rock-bottom interest rate, but instead something slightly above the market. As such, your interest rate and payment differential will be smaller, possibly making your refinance less valuable. We assume that the interest rate available for a “no-cost” refinance will be a half-percentage point higher than if you had paid the fees. If it is different, you can change the information in the yellow box.

In effect, since the whole amount of your loan will be exposed to this “higher-than-market” interest rate, your savings over time will be smaller than if you could use one of the other options.

Below the initial calculations, we’ve provided some examples of your costs over time, including the interest cost and the remaining loan balance after a given period of time. This way, you can see what those costs will be at varying intervals. You might find, for example, that relative to your time frame, incorporating the fees into the interest rate might mean they cost you less in interest over a given period than the amount you might have paid out-of-pocket up front.

Tip: Check current mortgage rates to make sure you are getting the best deal on your mortgage. To learn more about refinancing and refinancing options, visit our library .

Before you add in your actual numbers, we suggest that you use an example of an existing loan which is three years old, with a $100,000 loan amount for 30 years and a 6% interest rate, and use a 4% rate for refinancing. It will make it easier to follow the discussion of savings comparisons below.

The Blue. Green and Orange displays here will allow you to see if paying or financing the costs of your refinance works out for you over given time horizons. When you pay the fees up front, your interest charges will of course be lower; however, you must overcome what you spent today before savings start to happen.

Let’s say that after a year, your traditional refinance has seen you spend a total of $3813 in interest cost. Over the same time, the LCOR’s interest cost is $3889, while the “no cost” option has seen you pay $4292.

If you should suddenly sell your home after a year, your actual cost for the traditional refinance would include the $3813 plus an additional $1922 in closing costs for a total of $5735, while the other choices would have cost $3889 and $4292 respectively, so you would have been better off with one of them.

Factoring in the differences in remaining loan balances does change the equation, though. At the end of the 12-month period you still owe $1755 more on the LCOR than the traditional refinance, bringing the total of your LCO refinance to $3955, just slightly better than the paid-up-front choice.

However, building those costs into the interest rate means your “no-cost” refinance has seen you spend $4292 in interest, plus the $142 differential in remaining balance – so the total cost after 12 months is only $4434, a clear winner. over this very short time horizon.

These relationships change over time, however. After 10 years, you’ve spent a lot more in interest charges in the “no-cost” refinance than you would have if you chose to pay costs or build them into the loan amount.

All this said, in order to determine what your best choice will be over time, you’ll need to compare both interest costs and remaining balances among the various methods.

Whatever the method you choose for your refinance, you’ll still want to know how much money you’ll save relative to your existing loan – your costs if you never refinanced in the first place. The tables and charts below compare the interest costs of your new loan versus old over comparable time periods. As in the example above, this would compare the interest you’ll pay in the first twelve months of your new loan versus the interest you would have paid in the period from 37-48 months, and so on.

Refinancing may mean restarting your loan all over again. If you had been in your home for three years, and refinanced to a new 30-year term, you’ll pay for your loan for as long as 33 total years. The tables and charts below will let you see how the outstanding balance on your original loan would have fared relative to the new mortgage. Since the new mortgage is restarted all over again, even a significantly lower interest rate may not be able to overcome (or overcome quickly) the benefits of being further along in your amortization schedule, where the principal portion of your payment has grown while the interest component continues to shrink.

    Mercedes NAG1 / WA580 / W5A580 automatic transmission

    by Michael Dickens

The NAG1 (WA580 or W5A580) automatic transmission found in many Chrysler products is an electronically controlled 5-speed transmission system with a lock-up clutch in the torque converter. The fifth gear is designed to be an overdrive with a high-speed ratio; the ratios for the gear stages are obtained by three planetary gear sets.

The reasons why Chrysler switched to this transmission are somewhat unclear; the decision was made shortly after the acquisition of a highly profitable Chrysler Corporation by Daimler-Benz, and many alterations appeared to have been made for the benefit of Mercedes to the detriment of Chrysler. That said, the W5A580 / WA580 transmission did have advantages over existing Chrysler automatics. It was more efficient than the four-speed automatic used with lesser LX-car engines at launch, and compared with Chrysler’s own five-speed rear-drive automatic, the 545RFE, it had a wider gear range, considerably smaller size, and lower weight. The 545RFE remained in use alongside the WA580, in applications where its size was not an issue.

The term NAG1 is used to identify a family of transmissions, including the W5A580 / WA580 model (the only difference is the name, which is applied inconsistently) used by Chrysler. The meaning of these acronyms is:

    • W = Transmission using a hydraulic torque converter.
    • 5 = 5 forward gears [not always written out].
    • A = Automatic transmission.
    • 580 = Maximum input torque capacity in Newton-meters (428 ft-lbs.)

The NAG1 gears are actuated hydraulically, using fully electronic controls, using combinations of three multi-disc holding clutches, three multi-disc driving clutches, and two freewheeling clutches. Electronic control, pioneered by Chrysler and Toyota (among others), can increase gas mileage, increase shift control, provide a more favorable step-up through each of the five gears; increase service life, and lower maintenance costs.

The WA580 was used in many different Chrysler products, starting with the 2005 Chrysler 300 and Dodge Magnum; it was used with the 3.5 liter V6 and Hemi V8 engines. Later, it was used in the Jeep Liberty, Grand Cherokee, Dodge Charger, Dodge Challenger, and Ram truck, as well as every automatic-transmission SRT8 through at least 2012, and the 2012 Jeep Wrangler. The transmission was first launched in 2003 by Mercedes; one engineer familiar with it believes it to have been a copy of the five-speed ZF automatic.

Visually, the NAG1 transmission can usually be identified by a round 13-way connector near the front corner of the transmission oil pan, on the right side. Specific transmission information is usually found stamped into a pad that is located on the left side of the transmission, above the oil pan rail. The gear ratios are:

    * Different specification listings noted both 3.16 and 3.17. 3.16 appears more likely with 3.17 likely to be a typo. It is possible that the actual ratio is 3.165 and it has been rounded up or down, alternately.

    Technical details

Chrysler built the W5A580 at its Indiana Transmission Plant II, on the north side of Kokomo. The plant had 6 million square feet of space and 695 employees; it was completed in 2003 and was created to build this transmission. Indiana Plant I built the 45RFE and 545RFE electronically-controlled transmissions starting in 1998.

The converter and transmission housings are made from a light alloy; they are bolted together and sealed by a coated intermediate plate. The oil pump and the outer disc carrier are bolted to the converter housing. The stator shaft is pressed into it and prevented from rotating by splines. The control unit is bolted to the transmission housing from underneath and closed in by a sheet metal steel oil pan.

The mechanical section consists of a input shaft, output shaft, a sun gear shaft, and three planetary gear sets which are coupled to each other. The planetary gear sets each have four planetary pinion gears. The oil pressure for the torque converter lock-up clutch and internal clutches is supplied through bores in the input and output shaft. All the bearing points of the gear sets, as well as the freewheeling clutches and actuators, are supplied with oil. The parking lock gear is connected to the output shaft via splines.

The control unit is made from the shift plate for the hydraulic control, and an electrical control unit contained in a plastic box which is screwed to the shift plate. Strip conductors make the connection between the electrical components and a 13-pin bayonet-lock plug connector, which makes the connection to the vehicle’s transmission computer.

Hydraulic components, including actuators, are responsible for pressure distribution. Each shift group contains a command valve, a holding pressure shift valve, a shift pressure shift valve, overlap regulating valve, and a solenoid. There are three shift groups: 1-2/4-5, 2-3, and 3-4.

    Mercedes W5A580 transmission woes

Throughout the WA580’s / W5A580’s life, readers warned that the transmission was extremely sensitive to fluid quality and would shudder badly when the torque converter clutch is applied with even a 0.5% water dose. The temporary fix was to flush the fluid thoroughly (Chrysler recommended a triple flush) and put in a new filter; the long-term fix was to apply RTV (form-a-gasket) to the base of the transmission fill tube to avoid future contamination (particularly on early models, made in 2003-2005), assuming that’s where water got in. If the fill tube was incorrectly installed – that is, if the seal was not perfectly flush with the transmission housing, usually above it – then that must be fixed first, so it is completely flush. The procedure could take up to two hours and was covered in TSB 21-011-05 (it was covered by warranty at that time).

Another problem, at least through 2007, was the transmission filler tube o-ring leaking. Keith K. wrote that this was:

the “transmission cup plug adapter bushing.” The old ones had two white o-rings that were available separately; they all leaked and it looks like a pan gasket leak, there is a TSB from 2005 or 2006 about it. They superceded the O-rings to the whole bushing so you get a new plug bushing and O-rings, new black ones, already installed on it. The new design won’t leak.

Paul Knisely helped a reader whose W5A580 was making a vibration and low-frequency noise in drive, with the MDS activated between 18 and 50 mph. Four different dealerships had said that the system was working normally, and suggested driving in fourth gear to avoid overdrive. Paul checked the problem with Alldata DIY and found a diagnosis that the clutch in the torque converter was not holding — showing it was, but not actually holding. This would cause the vibration.

For performance, “MoparMaven” reported hearing that one of the clutches in the WA580 transmission (not surprisingly) can’t handle full power on the 4-5 shift from heavily modified engines (e.g. 700 horsepower and up). “Some clutch cannot take the rpm drop without mechanical advantage to break the tires loose, if only for an instant, because there was a declutching and reclutching. I’m guessing that the engine management system keeps the rpm from running away while this takes place. they recommend lifting for the 4-5 upshift.”

Some critics complained about the sometimes-heavy-handed torque management applied to keep the WA580 reliable, with the engine cutting power noticeably on shifts. Throughout the transmission’s life at Chrysler, critics also complained of its slow shifting. Still, as one forum poster wrote:

Chrysler may have overpaid for the NAG1 but it is hardly the slow shifting, unreliable transmission that the auto mags love to call it. Compared to a manual transmission, a human cannot shift faster than a NAG1. The NAG1 has powered some incredibly high horsepower LX vehicles with very little problems. Treat it badly and don’t maintain it, and it will break like anything else. There are plenty of LX/Jeep owners who have ha absolutely no problems with the NAG1/WA580.

Early reviews of the transmission actually praised its relatively fast shifting, indicating that the “slow shift” issue may have come later, perhaps due to the torque management intended to prolong transmission life.

Auto burglaries on the rise during the holidays, victimized Edmond family speaks out

Please enable Javascript to watch this video

EDMOND, Okla. — During the festive time of year, there seems to be a rise in crime.

Edmond Police said auto burglaries usually spike during the summer and holiday months.

Our NewsChannel 4 crews talked to one family who was victimized by thieves.

The Pattons said they left some of their belongings in their cars with the doors unlocked.

They came back to find their vehicles ravaged and possessions stolen, leaving them with a big lesson this holiday.

“From now on, I’m locking my car at all times,” said Kristie Patton.

This Thanksgiving, Kristie Patton is without her purse, credit cards, and checkbooks after leaving her personal items in her car in an Edmond neighborhood near 15th and Bryant.

“I’m just too trusting I think, I think nothing is going to happen to me, so I have everything in here,” said Patton.

“An auto burglary is truly a crime of opportunity,” said Jenny Wagnon-Monroe with the Edmond Police Department.

Edmond Police say auto burglaries happen often and people need to protect their property from thieves searching for anything to steal.

“They’re simply looking in a window. When they see it, they’ll break the window out or open that door and take it,” said Monroe.

Unfortunately for Patton, the mystery thieves got away with a lot, right when times are tough; Patton’s husband is battling personal health issues.

“He had to go to a treatment center to be treated because he’s been really sick the past couple of months. Now I’m just a single mom, with four kids,” said Patton.

A big lesson Patton and her kids have learned is to be proactive. They hope their neighbors learn from their mistake.

“Always lock your door, always take your valuables inside with you because you just never know,” said Patton.

Despite the headache the Pattons are dealing with, they still plan to enjoy the holiday and said they’re thankful for what they do have.

One of the victim’s friends also had her purse stolen in a nearby neighborhood off of 15th between Bryant and Boulevard.

If you notice any suspicious activity, call the Edmond Police Department.

How to Find Out Who Owns a Car

    Promoted by

Go to your local Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV). If you know the VIN number of the car, you can fill out a form to officially request information about the car’s current owner. However, in accordance with the Drivers Privacy Protection Act, the DMV can only release the information if your inquiry concerns a theft or the transferal of records into your name.

Go to the local police department with the car’s license plate number. Again, you will only be able to find out who owns the car if your search involves a criminal matter, safety issue or you want to make sure that the person you’re buying a car from really owns the car.

Hire an online private investigator. Companies like SnellingInvestigations.com or PInow.com allow you to search for private investigators in your area. Or, go to the website of your state’s association of licensed private investigators like the California Association of Licensed Investigators (cali-pi.org). According to the Drivers Privacy Protection Act, licensed private investigators are allowed to search public records to find the owner of a car.

Join a public record database like Abika.com or LicensePlate.net that allows you to look up the owner of the car via its license plate number. The fees for searching these databases generally range from $25 to $50 for an annual membership.

Massachusetts Bill of Sale Form: How to Get One, Fill it Out, and the Required Information

In Massachusetts. a bill of sale is needed whenever you buy or sell a motor vehicle. Before the buyer can register the car title in their name, the Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicles will require that a motor bill of sale and the car’s certificate of title be presented as proof of the sale or transfer. Fortunately, you can obtain a blank bill of sale for free.

Obtaining a Free Bill of Sale Form

The Internet provides hundreds of resources for bill of sale templates that can be used to transact the sale of a vehicle in Massachusetts. You can use a search engine to quickly locate sites where you can download a form that will meet the requirements of the Massachusetts RMV. To find these sites, enter search terms like ‘car bill of sale’ or ‘Massachusetts bill of sale form.’ The search engine will display hundreds of links where you can download the form for free.

Massachusetts does not require that a vehicle bill of sale form be notarized. However, if you want to further insulate yourself from potential liability, or if the buyer is making payments to you for the vehicle, you may want to have the bill of sale witnessed by a Notary Public to give the document more credibility, should you ever need to present a bill of sale contract in court.

What Needs to Be on a Massachusetts Bill of Sale Form?

Unlike some other states, Massachusetts does not provide a standardized bill of sale template that can be used for buying or selling a vehicle. Almost any vehicle bill of sale template that you download on the Internet should suffice. Generally speaking, a vehicle bill of sale form is acceptable in Massachusetts if it contains the following information:

    • Name and address of the buyer
    • Name and address of the seller
    • Date of the transaction
    • The odometer reading of the vehicle
    • The sales price of the vehicle
    • A description of the vehicle being sold
    • The VIN number of the vehicle
    • Signature of both parties

Although a bill of sale with the above required information is acceptable in Massachusetts, you may want to consider adding additional information or contract language. For example, if you are selling the vehicle without a warranty, you should ensure that the bill of sale states that the vehicle is being sold ‘As Is’ and without a warranty. Additionally, if the buyer is making payments to you on the car, make sure that the bill of sale states that the vehicle has not been fully paid for as of the date of the form signing.

Filling in the Blanks on a Bill of Sale

Once you download a template for a bill of sale form, you’ll find that filling in the blanks is rather easy. In fact, most of the information you’ll need to fill in is completely self-explanatory. When searching for template forms, try to find a PDF file that you can fill in using your computer. If you do download a template that needs to be filled in by hand, make sure to fill out the form legibly and put forth your best handwriting.

    Car Life

Determine How Quickly You Can Pay Off Your Loan

How long until my loan is paid off?

    Additional Information

If you feel that you have too much debt, you are not alone. Most people have substantial debt; many have more than they can handle. However, debt is not all bad. Sometimes it makes sense to use borrowed money for investments. However, most folks are not using debt in that way; they are using it to make ordinary purchases of things they would probably be better off without, anyway. In our competitive society, spending has become a status symbol. This encourages people to spend more than they should — more than they have. Consequently, they run up tremendous debt.

While some debt is okay, too much debt is not. So, how do you know whether you have too much debt or not? First let’s look at the different kinds of debt we might incur.

    Credit and the Consumer

While credit stimulates the economy, it does have to be used judiciously. Credit is not money. Derived from the Latin word for “trustworthiness,” credit is based on faith that the borrower will repay the debt with real money. One should not use credit in place of money when there is little or no likelihood that payment in real money will be made using credit without the intent or ability to pay is theft.

Today, credit has become a business in its own right. Credit is issued by banks, savings and loans, credit unions, public utilities, and even merchants. According to the Federal Reserve, there was more than $2.5 trillion of consumer debt outstanding by late 2009 this is more than double the amount outstanding in 1994. This represents hundreds of billions of dollars in interest earnings to lenders. This is why credit card companies aggressively compete to get you to use their credit cards and services. The marketing is so aggressive that consumers may lose sight of the fact that this is not free money and make excessive purchases to the point where they find themselves in financial difficulty.

    Finding Help In Managing Debt

There are many reasons why people find themselves in financial difficulty. The key to resolving financial woes is understanding why the problems arose, making a plan to resolve the problems, and taking action to get back on track.

In the past, you may have managed your debt well until you lost your job or had a financial setback due to large medical or legal expenses, or investment losses. You may have incurred large debt due to poor spending habits, overuse of credit cards, poor budgeting, or even gambling. Before you can resolve your debt issues, you need to deal with their causes or the problems will recur. Some of these issues you can resolve on your own, while others will require professional help.
