    1969 Porsche 911 E Coupe

    • Rust-free, restored example with renewed components from marque specialists
    • Striking original color combination and desirable specification
    • R-Gruppe ownership
    • Offered at $95,000 USD

Porsche has applied the exercise of evolution to its sports cars for as long as they ve existed. From the beginning their automobiles have appreciated incremental improvements with every new variant. Their 911 range provides one of the greatest examples of this pattern, and by the 1969 model year their rear-engined platform was receiving its first of many major generational improvements.

Criticized for its rear-engined handling characteristics, an effort was made to help alleviate some of its tail-happy tendencies. Some of the improvements included, among other things, lengthening the wheelbase by 2.4 inches and helping balance the tail-heavy weight distribution by placing an additional battery up front.

The 1969 Porsche 911 E offered for sale here is a brightly colored variety of one of these important 911s. This car comes from a Sports Car Digest reader and official member of the famous hot rod 911 community, R-Gruppe. Unlike many of the hot rod 911s you now see, though, this 911 retains many of its crucial, original details like engine, transaxle and bodywork. Continue reading

Bring a Trailer Auction 1970 Honda N600 Sedan

    1970 Honda N600 Sedan

Honda. The name is attached to such a wide variety of products that it s really easier to ask what aren’t they associated with, than what they are. As a powerhouse in the motorcycle and power equipment world, they happen to be more than just a player in the aviation and marine industry. Oh yeah, and you might recognize a few cars they’ve made, too.

The “Genesis” for Honda automobiles was its T360, a tiny truck built only for their home market of Japan. Later that same year in 1963, the public would have the chance to get their hands on Honda’s first production car, the exciting and high revving S500 roadster. With 4-wheel independent suspension, four carburetors, a chain-driven driveline and a 9,500 rpm rev limit, the S500 was a lot like nothing.

Honda’s first sports car was eventually offered with larger displacement in coupe and roadster form, and represents some of the innovative thinking from Soichiro Honda. The direction that Mr. Honda was interested in taking after this point involved air-cooled power plants, as he would later display with their air-cooled, RA302 Formula 1 car in 1968. With the use of air/oil-cooled engines already popular with European automakers at the time, it seemed like a logical move simple engineering using fewer parts, smaller packaging and an emphasis on weight savings.

The first and only mass-produced cars to benefit from Soichiro Honda’s air-cooled philosophy was the new range of “Kei” cars. Designed to fit within the home-market tax legislation, the initial N360 model fit neatly within required 360 cubic centimeters of engine displacement and did not exceed the maximum length of ten feet. To call the N360 a success would be a major understatement, as it would go onto become the best-selling Kei car of Japan, and would enjoy success abroad, with a N600 model produced to satisfy a market the demanded higher top speeds. While not the commercial success that the later Civic was, the N600 represents Honda s humble beginnings in what is now their biggest market. Continue reading

Auto Train offers an alternative to driving to Florida #auto #review

Auto Train offers an alternative to driving to Florida

The Auto Train makes its final stop in Sanford, Fla. (WTOP/Hank Silverberg)

LORTON, Va. The Auto Train is one of the region s most unique forms of transportation, combining mass transit and America s love of the automobile.

WTOP s Hank Silverberg recently hopped on board what s billed as the longest passenger train in the world, taking the non-stop trip from Lorton, Va. to Sanford, Fla. the gateway to the big theme parks in nearby Orlando.

With the price of gas topping $3.40 a gallon and security hassles at the airport, the Auto Train is going strong, and taking it can be more fun, if you are not a light sleeper.

The train carries both drivers and their vehicles. On a recent Thursday, the train carried 146 vehicles and 328 passengers for the 19-hour, overnight trip. That day the train was three quarters of a mile long, but could have been longer.

One of Auto Train s advantages is that once the train starts, it doesn t make any stops until it reaches Sanford.

Passengers like Donna Calabrese from Long Island,N.Y. who has done the trip 12 times, swear by it.

You get to see parts of the country you wouldn t see on a airplane, she said.

Her husband John, who was wearing closed headphones and was ready for a nap, was making his first trip. He says they planned to make several stops in Florida, and the Auto Train was much more convenient driving all the way there or flying and renting a car.

The cost in coach for two passengers to travel round-trip in coach is $1,023 on average, though that is subject to change. The price includes dinner and a continental breakfast the next morning.

A sleeping car costs riders an average of $332 to $564 on top of the round-trip ticket price, depending the number of people.

The trip takes you through some of America s oldest cities including Richmond, Va. Charleston, S.C. and Savannah, Ga. though most of the route is done at night when you can t see much.

Among the more interesting sites is the trip through Ashland, Va. where the train tracks run right along Main Street and through the campus of Randolph- Macon College.

The train does have a family atmosphere, but if you don t want to deal with crying babies, you can request an adults-only car.

Rhousi Shah of Ashburn, Va. was on the train with his wife Ricky and his three children, who are 5, 7 and 9.

He says they have driven and have stayed in the train s sleeping car before, but for this time, they chose coach.

You can pack your car with as much stuff as you can pack in the car and not have to worry about baggage, Shah said.

As he colored and listened to an iPod, Shah s son, Dralan, 9, said he prefers traveling by train because he can move around.

Some travelers will tell you, the train is not an ideal ride for light sleepers.

Andrew Fernicola traveled down from New York to catch the train in Lorton, Va. because it s cheaper. But when WTOP asked him about sleeping, he said goes in the bar car.

I hang out there, Fernicola said.

Just a few seats behind Fernicola was 16-year-old Andrew Goetzinger of Burke, Va. He said he does get bored on the long trip, and because he is tall and lanky, he has trouble sleeping in the seats. They don t recline all the way and the leg rests do not extend far enough to provide him real comfort.

The other obstacle to sleeping on the train is the noise. People are constantly moving around or opening the train s car doors to head to the lounge late at night.

The Auto Train leaves Lorton at 4 p.m. but you must have your vehicle there no later than 3 p.m. It pulls into Sanford at 9 a.m.

That is when some passengers get their only real surprise. It can take as long as two hours to unload all the cars, a hard wait to take for the people whose cars are the last off, after the 19-hour ride.

    used car checklist

From handy hints on how to spot if a car is stolen to alterations on the mileage, here’s our essential list of questions to ask, and items to check when you’re viewing a used car.

If you buy a used car privately, it’s a case of ‘Buyer Beware’. You don’t have the same legal protection as when buying from a dealer. It’s up to you to ask the right questions and check the car thoroughly before you buy.

If you don’t feel confident about carrying out any of these checks or if you just want a second opinion, we offer car checking services .

    Documents
    • Can the seller show you the V5C registration document? You won’t be able to tax the car without it.
    • Is the seller the registered keeper shown on the V5C? If not, why are they selling it for someone else?
    • Does the registration document have a watermark?
    • Any spelling mistakes on the registration document?
    • Do the VIN (vehicle identification number), engine number and colour match the V5C?
    • Does the number plate match the V5C?
    • Has the VIN plate been tampered with?
    • Do VIN numbers etched on glass or lights match the VIN plate and V5C?
    • Any sign of scratches on glass to remove etched-in marks?
    • Does the fuel filler look as if it has been forced or replaced?
    • Does the car have a current MOT (if the car’s more than three years old)? Check the MOT history and status of a vehicle »
    Mileage
    • Does the mileage, age and appearance of the car look consistent?
    • Any sign like worn screws that the instruments might have been tampered with? (Digital odometers can be tampered with electronically so clues like this won’t exist)
    • Check recorded mileage on service records, MOT ‘certificates’ and other documents.
    • Does it look consistent with current mileage/condition and increase steadily year on year?
    • Check MOT status and history online (with vehicle registration and make).
    Accident damage?
    • Any signs of inconsistent gaps between panels or mismatched colours that could be a sign of extensive repairs?
    • Is the paint finish even across the car?
    • Any traces of paint spray on handles, window seals or plastic mouldings?
    • Could the car’s colour have been changed? (Look under carpets and in other hidden areas in particular.)
    • Any unusual looking welding under the bonnet or in the boot?
    Safety
    • Are the tyres in good condition and all of the specification and dimensions? Tyres with less than 3mm of tread will have to be replaced soon.
    • Is the spare wheel or tyre inflator/sealant kit in serviceable condition?
    • Are the jack and other tools present?
    • Do all the seatbelts operate correctly? Check there are no cuts or fraying that could affect the way they work.
    • If airbags are fitted, Check that warning lights operate as described in the handbook – normally they will come on with the ignition and then go out?
    • Do all lights and windscreen wipers/washers work correctly?
    Test drive
    • Do all warning lights operate normally? Lights will generally come on to test and then go out – unless there’s a fault.
    • Are the brakes effective or does it take a long time or a lot of effort to stop?
    • Is braking even or does the car pull to one side?
    • Any unusual noises when you brake?
    • Is the handbrake effective?
    • Any steering vibration or pull to one side?
    • If ABS is fitted, does the warning light go out after the engine is started?
    Engine
    • Any abnormal noises when the engine is started from cold?
    • Does the oil warning light go out as soon as the engine starts?
    • Any signs of excessive visible exhaust emissions?
    • Does the clutch operate normally? A noise when you press the pedal or a high biting point could mean that repairs will be required soon.
    • Is the catalytic converter in good condition? Look for a recent emissions test, either alone or as part of an MOT. This will confirm that emissions are within the stringent limits applied to modern cars.
    • Is there sludge on the underside of the oil filler cap? This could indicate poor servicing or predominantly short journey use.
    • Is the oil level right? Too low shows neglect; too high could be a clue that the engine is using oil but it could just have been over filled in error.
    • Has the cam belt been replaced according to the service schedule?
    Locks, windows and general controls
    • Do all the locks, including central locking and remote control, work properly?
    • Do all windows, including any sunroof, open/close normally?
    • Any signs of forced entry, damaged or different locks, suggesting they’ve been replaced?
    • Have you got all the right keys? Check the handbook to see which keys were provided when the car was new. Modern keys are expensive to replace, particularly the coloured ‘master’ key provided by some manufacturers to programme new spare keys to the car.
    • Are locking wheel nuts fitted? Check that the special adapter required is included with the tool kit. Make sure it fits too.
    • Do all the minor controls operate correctly – heating, ventilation, air-conditioning, radio/CD, navigation etc?

    The Student Loan Finance Corporation

    Servicing Students and Lenders

Student loans are big business. In many instances, smaller lenders and student loan providers are challenged by integrating the resources necessary to manage an increasingly complex market. The Student Loan Finance Corporation (SLFC ) is known in the industry as a secondary market a kind of clearinghouse for student loans. It has a three-decade history in providing seamless account management of student loans, and works in tandem with community banks and hundreds of schools nationwide.

Whenever you are considering taking out a private loan, remember to exhaust all other resources first: federal loans, school financial aid, grants and scholarship opportunities. Private loans are based on your credit-worthiness and you may need a cosigner to obtain the loan. Interest rates are usually higher than the rates for federal loans, and come with variable rates that could change monthly. The advantage, of course, is that you can fill in the financial gaps when all of your resources combined just aren t enough.

    Products and Services

Since the SLFC is a secondary market for student loans, the corporation is limited in what it can offer students directly. However, you can apply through SLFC for a number of private student loans, often also known as alternative student loans. Private loans are awarded according to credit status and, if approved, you can typically borrow as little or as much as you need to augment the financial backing you have already acquired. As with other providers, you will be expected to apply for federal student loans first before you apply for private loans.

The SLFC offers iHELP Student Loans that cover any college costs that aren t covered by the student s financial aid (scholarships, grants and federal student loans). Any full or part-time college student who has already maxed out their financial aid can qualify for an iHELP loan. The iHELP program is sponsored by the Independent Community Bankers of America (ICBA) representing nearly 5,000 banks of all sizes and charters in 23,000 locations nationwide. The ICBA sponsors the iHELP program through their member banks, and hundreds of schools work with the SLFC, so you need to make sure your school is eligible to accept and process iHelp loans.

In the past, SLFC offered affordable and easy student loan consolidations, but the program is no longer available.

    Planning for College with SLFC

A feature of the SLFC is their online college planning tools. Do you need to know more about the nitty-gritty of financial aid? Are you confused about the types of student loans available and which ones are right for you? Access valuable how-to s on the federal loan programs, including grants and even scholarship opportunities.

Online planning tools guide you through the steps you need to strategize for college as early as your freshman year in high school, with savings tips and checklists. It offers advice on choosing a college, what to expect as an in-coming undergraduate or graduate, as well as career assessment advice. Calculators can assist you in estimating your college expenses and the final loan balances you can expect in advance.
