The best Windows tablets for 2017

Your buying guide for the best Windows tablets in 2017

We’ve reviewed and ranked the best Windows tablets you can buy today in the UK, but do read our buying advice before spending your money. Windows tablets have – over the last couple of years – been gaining in popularity, although they represent less than a quarter of the whole tablet market.

Because they run Windows most models come with a keyboard, although strangely not Microsoft’s Surface – you have to buy the keyboard separately. Whether you want to work or play, you’ll find something here to suit your budget.

If you don’t really need to get any work done on your tablet, an iPad or and Android tablet might suit you better, so check out our list of the best tablets. and also the best new tablets coming in 2017 .

Unlike the alternatives tablets running Windows 10 offer true portable computing on the move. Microsoft’s own Surface Pro. for example, is as powerful as many desktop PCs. and it offers decent battery life. You can install proper Windows software on it, and perform any task for which you would normally rely on a desktop PC. All it will fit into any man bag.

The Surface Pro 3 offers the best of all worlds, with relatively little sacrifice. It’s cheaper now that the Surface Pro 4 has superseded it. If you can afford one and you really want one device for everything, it is a great purchase. But the Surface Pro 5 is coming soon, so if you can wait a little while, the older tablets could get even cheaper.

Should I buy a tablets or a 2-in-1 hybrid?

You’ll note in our chart below that not all the devices look the same. That’s because Windows offers manufacturers flexibility of form. Some Windows tablets are tiny portable devices. Others are more like laptops which can also be used like tablets. These are often called 2-in-1s or hybrids.

Just remember that by its very nature a tablet should be a flexible and portable device. So ask yourself whether you need a keyboard (and if so whether an ultraportable laptop would be a better idea). How big a screen do you need, and how much weight are you prepared to carry? Hybrid devices can seem like the best of all worlds, but they tend to be equally imperfect as laptops and tablets – how often will you transform their functions in your daily life?

If anything in the list below grabs your attention, read the full review in detail, and the answers to these and other questions should become clear. If you specifically want a 2-in-1 device then check out our best convertible tablets chart .

Best Windows tablets 2017 UK – Windows tablet reviews

1. Microsoft Surface Pro 4

There is a great deal to like and rave about the Surface Pro 4. The design is thinner and lighter for starters. The screen is awesome, there’s plenty of power available, the new Surface Pen is better and the Type Cover is a vast improvement on the last one. However, the design is inherently awkward at times, it’s more expensive that a lot of laptops and the Type Cover, which you’ll pretty much need, isn’t included lowering the value.

2. Samsung Galaxy TabPro S

The TabPro S is undeniably a beautiful and capable piece of hardware and it can be a joy to use. The problem is, it’s not a joy to use all the time. The 2-in-1 form factor can work, and we still think that the Surface Pro 4 is the best example of this, thanks to its build quality and integrated kickstand. The TabPro S is an excellent computer, but it remains frustrating that it doesn’t always excel in being one. Hopefully Samsung will consider improving simple things like the stand on the inevitable sequel if it is to continue to charge this much money for it.

3. Microsoft Surface Pro 3

A very decent laptop replacement, and an okay tablet, the Surface Pro 3 is undeniably impressive. If you need a single device to do everything we can’t think of any better device. And when you consider the cost of buying a discrete laptop, tablet and desktop PC the Surface Pro 3 is priced to shift. The question remains as to whether people want a single device rather than multiple gadgets that are better at their individual tasks. Microsoft’s latest results suggest that Surface Pro 3 is winning hearts and minds. Has it won yours?

4. Microsoft Surface 3

Objectively, the Surface 3 is the best compromise between a laptop and tablet. It’s a highly portable gadget which can run full Windows programs and it costs less than the Surface Pro 3. It’s not exactly cheap by the time you’ve added the keyboard and stylus, though. It’s also only good for lightweight duties – it’s less powerful than laptops costing the same – and some people will find the screen is too small for ‘proper’ productivity. It’s a better work tool than an iPad and Bluetooth keyboard, it has to be said, and if you only need to use office apps and a web browser, it could be exactly what you’re after. Most people are better off spending more on the Surface Pro 3 or, if you don’t need a touchscreen, a Core M laptop such as the Asus UX305F.

5. Chuwi Hi10 Pro

The Chuwi Hi10 Pro is an excellent value Windows 10 laptop-tablet hybrid with the addition of Android (albeit old Android) and a pleasing build for the money. We take issue with its fingerprint-prone screen and tinny, poorly placed speakers, but in all other respects this is a very decent device for the money. It’s not a fast device, and we wouldn’t recommend it to gamers, but it’s fast enough for most daily Windows tasks.

6. Asus Transformer Book Flip TP200SA

Whether the Asus Transformer Book Flip TP200SA is a good buy or not depends entirely on your priorities. If you want to open up loads of browser windows and have plenty of apps open at once, this isn’t for you. The Asus Transformer Book Flip TP200SA only really runs well with an app or two running, and no data-intensive background processes going on. In laptop terms it’s a whelp. However, good stamina, a smart design and good, non-cramped keyboard make it a great low-cost choice if you want something to do some writing/emailing/browsing while you’re away from home.

7. Chuwi HiBook Pro

Chuwi’s tablets are not the fastest Windows machines you can buy, but they make excellent portable computers if you’re on a budget. With its Quad-HD screen and fast USB-C charging, the HiBook Pro is a very good cheap option. We recommend you also buy the optional keyboard that turns this Windows/Android tablet into a laptop.

8. Venturer BravoWin 10KT

If you don t mind what it looks like, the Venturer BravoWin 10KT is an ideal budget option for students. It costs just 150 and can be with you tomorrow, and that price includes a magnetic docking keyboard and a full copy of Windows 10. It s easily portable and sufficiently capable, if not a speed demon.

Lesson 1: Introduction to MS Excel 2016

Excel can be used for a wide variety of purposes such as creating an address book, grocery lists, tracking expenses, creating invoices and bills, accounting, balance checkbooks and other financial accounts, as well as any other purpose that requires a spreadsheet or table.

  • Lesson 2: Navigating Excel 2016

In this lesson, we’re going to focus on the major elements of Excel 2016 and take a few minutes to become familiar with their purpose.

  • Lesson 3: Worksheets and Workbooks

Worksheets are stored in workbooks, and workbooks are the files that you actually save.

  • Lesson 4: Entering Information into MS Excel 2016

Starting to enter information is as simple as clicking on a cell in the spreadsheet and typing, but there are some things that are helpful to know – and that you can do – before you ever type that first letter or number.

  • Lesson 5: Introduction to Working with Cells, Rows, and Columns

If you want to move data from its original location and relocate it somewhere else, you must cut the data, then paste it somewhere else. You can cut or copy cells, rows, columns, or entire worksheets.

  • Lesson 6: Formatting Data and Cells

Taking the time to format a worksheet can take it from the black and white page of data and gridlines to something that looks professional and attractive.

  • Lesson 7: Formatting Rows and Columns

In Excel 2016, the width of a column is determined by how many characters that can be displayed within a cell.

  • Lesson 8: Editing Cells, Rows, Columns, and Worksheets

Excel 2016 makes creating – and editing – spreadsheets a lot easier because correcting errors is easy mess free.

  • Lesson 9: Introduction to Formulas and Calculations

If you use spreadsheets to do accounting for a business, track totals, invoice customers, or anything that requires mathematics, Excel’s ability to calculate formulas is going to save you errors and headaches.

  • Lesson 10: Working with Formulas and Functions

In Excel, a function is a predesigned formula that does a certain calculation. This can make it easier because you don’t have to construct every formula yourself.

  • Lesson 11: Maintaining Worksheets

It’s important to learn how to maintain your worksheets to help you keep on top of all the information.

  • Lesson 12: The What-If Analysis

A what-if analysis lets you explore possibilities by entering possible values into the same equation so you can see the possible outcomes in the cells of your spreadsheet.

  • Lesson 13: Adding Images and Graphics

You’ve already learned how to format a worksheet and enter information into Excel. Now we’re going to show you how to add elements such as graphics and images.

  • Lesson 14: Charts and Diagrams

Charts and diagrams are tools you can use to visually represent the data in a worksheet.

  • Lesson 15: Creating Data Lists

A data list or a database table are types of worksheets that aren’t used to calculate values, but to store information, such as names and addresses of clients or perhaps a library of books.

  • Lesson 16: Managing Data

A form is simply a dialog box that lets you display or enter information one record (or row) at a time. It can also make the information more visually appealing and easier to understand.

  • Lesson 17: Pivot Tables and Pivot Charts

A pivot table sounds more difficult and confusing than it really is. Most people say they don’t like pivot tables, or they don’t understand them. In truth, they’re not that difficult at all.

  • Lesson 18: Printing Worksheets and Workbooks

Headers appear at the top of a worksheet. Footers appear at the bottom. Both can contain page numbers, and headers often contain the title of the worksheet and perhaps the date.

  • Lesson 19: Templates

Templates are worksheets that are already designed for you.

  • Lesson 20: Protecting, Saving, and Sharing Workbooks

Add protection to worksheets so that they can’t be edited by other people. You can lock cells or an entire worksheet.

Microsoft Extends Azure s Safety Net for Windows Server Cloud Backups

Microsoft Azure Backup, the company s cloud-based data protection platform, can now protect both the data and configuration information stored on Windows Servers.

In its latest stab at cloud-based data protection for enterprises, Microsoft is making it easier for Azure Backup customers to bounce back from Windows Server mishaps, or worse, debilitating ransomware attacks .

Moving beyond simple data backups, Microsoft this week announced an expansion of the features in its Azure Backup agent software that also take a server’s operating system and application configuration into account, enabling businesses to quickly resume operations with a minimum of server setup chores. The cloud backup now integrates with the Windows Server System State feature available in the operating system since Windows Server 2008 R2.

The updated Azure Backup agent, available now in preview, allows organizations to protect their Windows Servers and business applications, like Active Directory, with a more comprehensive cloud-based safety net, claimed Saurabh Sensharma, a program manager at Microsoft Azure Backup.

“System State of a domain-controller server captures the Active Directory and files that are required for domain-controller synchronization and allow for targeted Active Directory protection and restores,” Sensharma offered as an example in his blog post. “On a file server, System State captures important file-cluster configurations and policies that protect files from unauthorized access.”

Likewise, the feature can be used to backup Internet Information Services (IIS) web servers, complete with a website’s file and folder structure along with configuration information.

This week also marked the release of Microsoft’s Azure Backup Server 2.0, building on its existing VMware support to provide data protection for virtual machines (VMs) running on vCenter and ESXi 6.5 servers. Included is an option that enables users to automatically backup VMware VMs to the cloud the moment they are added to folders.

Of course, Microsoft isn’t neglecting its own Hyper-V virtualization technology. As part of the new Windows Server 2016 integration with Azure Backup Server, the system can now backup Hyper-V VMs deployed to storage managed by the operating system’s Storage Spaces Direct feature.

Storage Spaces Direct is a scalable server storage pooling technology that uses direct-attached drives as an alternative to network-attached storage (NAS) and storage area network (SAN) arrays. Part of the Windows Server 2016 Datacenter edition, it provides a number of enterprise storage management capabilities, including erasure coding.

Azure Backup Server also introduces Microsoft’s performance-enhancing and capacity-optimizing storage technology, dubbed simply Modern Backup Storage.

“Modern Backup Storage is a technology that leverages Windows Server 2016 native capabilities such as ReFS [Resilient File System] block cloning, deduplication and workload aware storage to optimize backup storage and time, and delivers nearly 50 percent disk storage savings and 3x faster backups,” explained Maanas Saran, a program manager at Microsoft Azure Backup, in a May 31 announcement. “With Modern Backup Storage, Azure Backup Server goes a step further in enhancing enterprise backups by completely restructuring the way data is backed up and stored.”

Altogether, Azure Backup Server’s new storage efficiency features, along with no-cost restoration from cloud recovery points, help drive down the cost of protecting vital server infrastructure, asserts Microsoft. Video demonstrations of the basics of protecting storage volumes using Modern Backup Storage are available here .

(QA) manager’s role stop and the operations manager’s role begin?

The call center manager and the quality assurance (QA) manager have two distinct and important roles within the call center, but they share certain goals, including call center quality assurance. These two managers should work together to ensure that their agents adhere to internal policies and procedures and consistently provide an outstanding customer experience. Both are responsible for ensuring that call center agents meet quality assurance goals.

The call center manager oversees the entire call center operation and is ultimately responsible for ensuring that all call center goals, including quality objectives, are met. The quality assurance manager handles the day-to-day operation and administration of the quality monitoring program.

Organization structure also impacts the roles and responsibilities of the call center manager and quality manager. In some call centers, the quality assurance manager reports directly to the call center manager. In these situations it’s easy to have shared goals. In other call centers, the quality assurance function reports to a manager outside of the contact center. When this happens, there can be some conflict due to a misunderstanding of what is best for the customer. When this happens, senior managers need to intervene to clarify roles and responsibilities.

Even if there is a formal quality assurance group, line managers or supervisors need to constantly monitor the quality of their agents. The line managers are responsible for the day-to-day performance of their staff. It’s great if the quality assurance group provides input and coaches agent performance, but ultimately it is responsibility of the line manager.

Call center quality assurance programs succeed when they have support and buy-in from call center managers, supervisors, trainers and agents. So it’s critical to maintain open communication between the quality and management teams. Preferably, the quality assurance manager should have a seat at the call center manager’s monthly staff meeting. This is a great forum for quality managers to gain a broader perspective about what is happening in the call center, what challenges exist, and what policy, product, staffing, training or operational changes are imminent. Similarly, it allows the quality manager to provide the management team with updates on call center quality metrics, recent trends, and changes in the quality program. Additionally, it enables both groups to coordinate and optimize staff communications, recognition, training and performance improvement efforts.

    Review: Microsoft System Center 2012 Endpoint Protection #microsoft, #endpoint #security, #anti-malware

Review: Microsoft System Center 2012 Endpoint Protection

While Microsoft System Center 2012 Endpoint Protection offers deployment and management convenience, its anti-malware engine is weak in comparison to competitors.

You may not have heard of Microsoft’s System Center 2012 Endpoint Protection anti-virus product, most likely because until October 2011 it was known as Microsoft Forefront Endpoint Protection 2010.

The name change is significant because Forefront is Microsoft’s enterprise security product brand, but Microsoft now considers anti-virus to be a part of systems management. Endpoint Protection is now one of the components included in both the Standard and Data Center editions of its System Center 2012 management suite, and Microsoft has attempted to integrate Endpoint Protection with System Center Configuration Manager to make anti-virus protection easier to deploy and manage.

    The Good: Centralization

The thinking behind offering the product through Microsoft System Center 2012 is that endpoint protection becomes just another application to centrally deploy and manage, rather than needing to run an enterprise endpoint protection vendor’s management console to deploy and manage anti-virus measures. “The convergence of client management and security eliminates the expense of purchasing and maintaining separate solutions,” Microsoft explained. “The shared infrastructure also provides the enterprise-scale performance of Configuration Manager, making deployment and configuration faster and easier for even the largest organizations.”

Peter Firstbrook, an analyst at Gartner, says that that bringing endpoint protection into System Center makes sense. “You can deploy security separately from monitoring a device, but patching and configuring has security implications so the two roles are intertwined.”

    The Bad: Anti-Malware Capability

Although the move is a good idea in principle, Firstbrook says the results have been disappointing. “There is no new functionality, and the integration has not been done that well. Some things can be managed from System Center, but other things, like the firewall, can’t.”

Making Endpoint Protection a part of System Center is a risky move by Microsoft, because it effectively rules out any company that chooses not to use System Center as a management platform. But even for companies that do choose to implement System Center, Endpoint Protection may not necessarily be the best choice. Despite the benefits of having endpoint protection integrated into Microsoft’s management platform, the protection it offers is not that impressive.

To understand why not, it’s important to realize what it is that Microsoft is offering. “System Center 2012 Endpoint Protection uses the same industry-leading anti-malware engine as Microsoft Security Essentials” is how Microsoft puts it.

But “industry-leading” is a debatable claim. Microsoft Security Essentials’ anti-malware engine is fairly basic, despite having been updated in May 2012. It scores poorly in terms of detecting new malware.

A test conducted by AV-Comparatives found Microsoft performed worst out of the 15 anti-virus products under scrutiny in terms of detecting new and prevalent viruses. It caught just 93.1 percent of the samples tested, compared to 99.3 percent for Kaspersky and 98.6 percent for McAfee. “A good file detection rate is still one of the most important, deterministic and reliable features of an anti-virus product,” said AV Comparatives’ Peter Stelzhammer.

One reason for Microsoft’s poor detection rates may stem from the fact that it is constrained in what it can do compared to other vendors, according to Simon Edwards, technical director of Dennis Technology Labs. “While other vendors use undocumented features of the operating system, Microsoft is constrained from using these features because if it did use them it would have to document and support them. So for that reason it is at a technical disadvantage,” he explained.

But Gartner’s Firstbrook believes poor detection rates are due to the fact that Microsoft’s anti-malware engine is just too basic. “Other engines from the likes of Kaspersky. McAfee or Trend Micro employ URL filtering and other pre-filters to block malware coming on to the system before using behavioral protection and signature files. But Microsoft employs no pre-filters, and its signatures are simply not up to snuff. The result is that the protection it can offer is not that great.”

He pointed out Microsoft’s poor signature-based detection could be mitigated to an extent if endpoints were kept up-to-date and patched through System Center Configuration Manager. But System Center only patches Microsoft software, doing nothing to ensure common applications such as Adobe Flash are updated to remove vulnerabilities.

    A Final Point: False Positives

While detection rates are important, they are not the only significant thing to measure. False positives – where an AV product identifies an innocent file as malware – can be far more disruptive and costly to a large enterprise. False positives can make files unavailable to end users, and if the file is a common one then the AV software may report wrongly that hundreds or thousands of machines are infected.

Microsoft’s anti-virus engine scores very well when it comes to false positives. In tests with the same group of products, Microsoft came out best, producing zero false positives, compared to nine from Kaspersky and 428 for Webroot.

“A product that is successful at detecting a high percentage of malicious files but suffers from false alarms may not be necessarily better than a product which detects less malicious files but which generates less false alarms,” Stelzhammer concluded.

To use Endpoint Protection in System Center 2012, it is necessary to buy an Endpoint Protection subscription for each device that runs a non-server OS. Microsoft currently charges around $22 per endpoint per year for a two year subscription.

    1. StreamSend – We prefer StreamSend over all the others. Their setup is easy to use, intuitive and not very expensive. We prefer StreamSend because they charge based on emails sent, not the size of your list. This is important for people who might send once or twice a month.
    2. Awebber – A great platform for people who want to try their hand at marketing automation – where you create a email sales campaign and then send on a time delay (ex. 1 email per day for 7 days.) Awebber charges based on the size of your list, so they may be a good choice if you plan on sending once a week or more.
    3. GetResponse – For marketers looking for more than just an email service provider, GetResponse provides multi-media email blast capabilities, cross-channel tracking and automation, GetResponse may be for you. Not quite as easy to use as StreamSend, but more features. If you want to combine email marketing with social marketing and video, then GetResponse has the tools to do the job.

On October 5, 2015 I was working on an Access database program, and needed assistance to get it in use quickly. I found Winning Solutions via google/chat now, they contacted me with their programmer Andres Dominicci the next day. With the expertise of Andres the database was put in the store for use just 4 days later. The efficiency of his programming and the added benefit of video to refer back to in case of small adjustments brought what seemed like a daunting task into reality very quickly. You can get quick, efficient, trustworthy help directly into your office regardless of your location. This is utterly amazing. I would not hesitate to recommend this company for specialized projects in your office.

Moving Company Files To The Cloud: The Problem With OneDrive For Business #onedrive, onedrive #for #business, dropbox, google #drive, shared #files, small #business,sync,sharing,sharepoint,file_sharing,microsoft,office #365,web_services

Moving Company Files To The Cloud: The Problem With OneDrive For Business

Small businesses and law firms are ready to move their documents to the cloud. Until recently, I haven’t had an answer about how to accomplish that because none of the familiar solutions were quite right.

Let’s get some background, using OneDrive for Business as an example of a service that looks like it ought to be the right answer – but isn’t. In the next article, I might have an answer.

Most small businesses and law firms have a folder on the server in the closet that is used for all shared files. It might be called “Company” or “Share files” or the “M:” drive or the “P:” drive, or maybe your office has a few different shared folders, but the idea is the same: the server is the default location for every work file.

We’ve become accustomed to accessing our mailboxes on all of our devices from any location, but accessing shared company files is harder.

    • Traditionally it requires remote access to an onsite computer using LogMeIn or Remote Desktop.

    • Brave people might try setting up VPN access to the server, which is notoriously clumsy and hard for normal people to figure out.

    • Microsoft’s recent Small Business Server and Server Essentials products set up an online portal that provides access to the shared files on the office server, where they can be downloaded so you can work on them, then uploaded back to the server.

We’re losing our fear of the cloud. The best online services are secure and outages are occurring less frequently. At the same time, we’re more mobile than ever and we expect access to our information wherever we are on whatever device we have in our hands, including laptops, tablets and phones.

It’s no surprise that in the last couple of years, I’ve been asked frequently to recommend an online service to store company files for a small business.

There are four services that are well-known, plausible candidates: OneDrive ; OneDrive for Business ; Dropbox ; and Google Drive. Each offers generous amounts of online storage space at a low cost, and each has extensive support for sharing files and folders. Microsoft includes access to OneDrive for Business as part of many Office 365 business plans, and now also sells it separately. Dropbox introduced Dropbox for Business for better user management and improved security. Google packages Google Drive as a core feature of its business-oriented Google Apps for Work.

OneDrive, OneDrive for Business, Dropbox, and Google Drive are built to hold files owned by an individual . None of them is intended to handle equal, shared access by groups of people. It’s deep in their architecture; attempting to use them for a shared company folder quickly exposes the missing elements and flaws that distinguish an individual service from a service for groups.

Let’s use OneDrive for Business as an example. Many business Office 365 accounts include 1Tb of storage space in OneDrive for Business, more than enough for all the company documents. What happens if you decide to move all the company files to OneDrive for Business?

OneDrive for Business is assigned to each person individually. There’s no Company folder. The files are going to go in the senior partner’s account.

After some setup and uploading, the files are online. Access to the files is shared with all the employees. Each employee can open their OneDrive for Business portal and see the list of files. Each employee can edit the files, rename them, move them, and delete them. That’s the same situation you had before with files on the local server, but there are fewer backup options for online files and perhaps a shorter retention period for recovering accidentally deleted files.

With OneDrive for Business in its current incarnation, only the owner of the shared files – the senior partner – can sync a copy of the files to their local computer. The only access for everyone else occurs through the website. The website access is very nice, including use of Microsoft’s web-based versions of Office programs, but it’s not the same as opening up File Explorer and browsing through files and folders. Among other things, that means you’re cut off from the files while you’re offline. No working on the airplane unless you download files before you board and remember to upload the new versions manually after you land.

The owner of the files will presumably want to run the program that syncs a copy of them to his local computer; unfortunately, the sync program for OneDrive for Business is buggy and unstable. completely different from the reliable one used by the consumer version of OneDrive. The files have to be stored on the senior partner’s computer; syncing to a server or network drive is not supported.

Perhaps you try another option: let every employee log into OneDrive for Business with a single shared account. Each employee syncs all of the Company files to every computer, in their entirety. It eats up hard drive space on every computer, and perhaps fills up hard drives and crashes some of them. The syncing is time-consuming and it eats up bandwidth. If an employee’s finger slips and deletes a folder, the folder is deleted from every computer. Confusing things happen if two employees edit the same file simultaneously.

OneDrive for Business is actually a lightly-disguised facelift for individual document libraries in Sharepoint. Microsoft’s enterprise platform for collaboration and office networking. OneDrive for Business has no relationship whatsoever to the consumer version of OneDrive – completely different architecture at Microsoft’s end, completely different syncing software on your computer. (Good article here about the history of OneDrive for Business and how it compares to the consumer OneDrive.)

Now you can see the bigger picture of Microsoft’s services for storing files online.

    • OneDrive for Business is for individuals.

    • Microsoft’s platform for shared company documents is Sharepoint Team Site Libraries.

    Small businesses don’t use Sharepoint.

Oh, I’ve tried. I’ve talked about Sharepoint. I’ve studied it. I’ve taken training courses. I’ve worked with test Sharepoint sites. I’ve thought long and hard about what it would mean for a small business to adopt Sharepoint.

Sharepoint is huge. It’s complex. It’s complicated. It’s difficult to set up, difficult to administer, difficult to use. It requires a difficult migration, long employee training, and most of all, it absolutely requires at least one company employee whose job will largely consist of being a Sharepoint administrator. It’s effectively out of reach for companies with fewer than 25 employees.

Large enterprises use Sharepoint because it can be made to do wonderful things, if it is extensively customized and there are in-house IT employees available to do the nonstop administrative tasks.

“Should I save my documents to OneDrive for Business or a team site?

“It’s tempting to save all your documents to OneDrive for Business. If a document is a collaborative effort related to a project, then saving it to a team site might be a better choice. This article provides some guidelines to help you decide which route to go.

“Save documents to OneDrive for Business when…

    • “You don’t plan to share them.

Documents you place in OneDrive for Business are private by default, unless you place them in the Shared with Everyone folder. This makes OneDrive for Business your best option for draft documents or personal documents that no one else needs to see.

    • “You plan to share them. but they have a limited scope or lifecycle.

You may sometimes work on documents that aren’t related to an ongoing project, which are important mostly to you, but that you still want to share.

“Save documents to a team site library when…

    • “You want team members to recognize the document as being relevant to an ongoing project.

    • “You want to spread ownership and permissions across a wider collection of people.”

As a small business, you don’t have Sharepoint team sites. That means Microsoft does not have a solution for you to store your company files online.

The details are slightly different with OneDrive, Dropbox, and Google Drive, but the concept is the same. Each one is designed for files owned by individuals and shared on a limited basis. They are not designed for company files which will be accessed equally by all employees in a small business.

In the next article, we’ll look at the service that has matured into the solution we’ve been looking for. I finally have an answer for small businesses that want to move their files online.
