Canadian car parts suppliers poised for growth Add to.

Auto sales in the United States – still Canada’s most important parts market despite boom times in China and South America – rose 13.5 per cent in 2012 to nearly 14.5 million vehicles. This year, U.S. sales will reach 15.3 million vehicles, estimates Polk, a Southfield, Mich.-based research firm.

Polk cites low interest rates, a healthier housing sector and a wave of new vehicles introduced by major auto makers as reasons for the growth. Consumers are eager to trade in their worn-out vehicles after delaying purchases during tough times.

“They’re facing the best decade in their history,” said Dennis DesRosiers, an industry consultant in Richmond Hill, Ont. “No later than two years from now, we’re going to have a record level of production in North America, and if you produce record numbers of vehicles, you’re going to have record (parts) supply.”

The steady recovery by Ford Motor Co. General Motors Co. and Fiat SpA’s Chrysler Group LLC from their recession-induced slump is just one factor that suggests better times lie ahead.

As part of the Detroit Three’s restructuring, supplier lists are being reduced by up to half, giving survivors a bigger piece of the pie, said BMO Capital Markets auto-parts analyst Peter Sklar. Further buoying Canadian suppliers is growing demand for global parts supply as auto makers increasingly build vehicles on shared platforms to cut costs and use common parts.

“We think this is a good entry point for investors, in terms of valuation,” he said. “They’re at the low end of the range of where they’re going to trade. For this year, for 2013, we think they’re all going to have good earnings growth, so the stocks are going to go up.”

In the last market cycle, torpedoed by the 2008-09 auto sector meltdown, Canadian parts suppliers generally traded at four to six times enterprise value to EBITDA (earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization), Mr. Sklar said.

He forecasts valuations of five to seven times that ratio. But Magna is now trading at about five times trailing EBITDA, Martinrea 5.2 times, Linamar 5.9 times, with smaller Exco Technologies Ltd at 5.2 times, he said.

Canadian supplier stocks are also cheaper than those of blue-chip U.S. rivals such as Johnson Controls Inc. and BorgWarner Inc. Mr. Sklar said.

To capitalize on favourable conditions, the country’s biggest suppliers must develop cutting-edge components, experts say.

Tougher fuel economy standards and a hyper-competitive auto market that is hungry for consumer-appealing electronics will require advanced parts, said Steve Rodgers, president of the Automotive Parts Manufacturers’ Association.

“It’s going to be absolutely crucial for them to continue to drive their R D capabilities,” he said in a phone interview from the recent Detroit auto show.

Fuel efficiency standards for U.S. cars and light trucks will soar to 54.5 miles a gallon in 2025, building on a rule raising fuel economy to 35.5 mpg for 2011 to 2016 model year vehicles.

That is “changing a lot of directions in technology,” Mr. Rodgers said. Alongside increased interest in diesel systems, there is a push for advances ranging from lighter, alternative and composite materials to higher-speed transmissions, he said.

Ford, whose F-150 pickup is the best-selling vehicle in the United States, recently gave a sneak peek at its lighter, more fuel-thrifty truck. A new turbocharged engine and a more aerodynamic grill and wheels will help wring more miles per gallon.

Canada recently committed $250-million to an extended auto R D fund, matching the money in its initial 2008 program, but critics say that is insufficient to draw new assembly plants, the lifeline of parts suppliers.

Tony Faria, an auto industry expert at the University of Windsor in Ontario, argues such subsidies are imperative. Even if the funds don’t lure new plants, they help germinate research and technology crucial to existing manufacturing and suppliers.

To be sure, Canada’s top suppliers must also keep opening plants close to auto makers that are expanding in hot-house markets outside North America.

Magna, one of the world’s largest parts suppliers, had 305 manufacturing plants in 27 countries as of last quarter.

“If you’re going to be a major player in the auto parts industry, you’ve got to be where production is occurring,” Mr. Faria said. “For the last 10 years now, we’ve seen the bulk of new vehicle assembly going to China, India, Brazil, Russia.”

Fully 50 per cent of new auto assembly investment went to China in the last two years, he said.

China, the world’s biggest auto market, is expanding its reach. Shareholders of Wescast Industries Inc. vote on Feb. 21 on a drawn-out $145.6-million takeover bid by China’s Sichuan Bohong Industry Co. Ltd.

Auto economist Jim Stanford leaving Unifor to join spouse in Australia – The Globe and Mail #public #auto #auction

Auto economist Jim Stanford leaving Unifor to join spouse in Australia Add to.

Australia is losing its auto industry, but it’s gaining one of the highest-profile economists in the auto sphere with Jim Stanford’s departure from Unifor.

Mr. Stanford, 54, has been an economist at Toronto-based Unifor and its predecessor union, the Canadian Auto Workers, since March 1994, when then-CAW president Buzz Hargrove hired him to bolster the union’s economics and research department.

He is moving to Australia in January to join his spouse, Donna Baines, who began a job as chair of social work and social policy at the University of Sydney earlier this year.

“It’s kind of one of those things about modern life,” he said in an interview. “You have two careers and there is also this idea of stirring it up at the mid-life point. It’s better than getting divorced and buying a sports car.”

His profile increased with his participation in a weekly business panel on CBC television’s The National and through columns in the comment pages of The Globe and Mail. As well, his Economics for Everyone: A Short Guide to the Economics of Capitalism. has just gone through its second printing.

Mr. Stanford was a key adviser to Mr. Hargrove and his successors Ken Lewenza and Jerry Dias during turbulent times in the auto industry.

That history includes numerous plant closings; a strike by CAW members against General Motors of Canada Ltd. in 1996; three separate sales of the automaker once known as Chrysler Corp. and its Canadian unit; and the recession of 2008-2009, which led to the bankruptcy of General Motors Corp. and Chrysler LLC and contributions by the federal and Ontario governments to the bailouts of those two companies.

The union also evolved, growing from an organization dominated by auto workers to one that now encompasses retail employees, health-care workers and people working in telecom and media after the 2013 merger with the Communications Energy and Paperworkers Union of Canada that led to the creation of Unifor.

Mr. Stanford said he has based his career on trying to “kind of democratize economics” and make it more popular. “The great thing for me about working with the union was that it gave me the opportunity and authority to try and talk about economics in the way that an average worker could understand, and relate the issues to those workers’ lives rather than abstract theoretical models.”

That included his writing, video skits and music parodies that were shown at conventions and other CAW gatherings.

He entered one CAW council meeting riding on his daughter’s tricycle as the gathering prepared to discuss fuel efficiency, the environment and the impact of those two issues on the auto industry.

Mr. Hargrove said he wasn’t sure how the stunt would go over with hundreds of union members, but recalled that they roared their approval.

Mr. Stanford said he expects to work in policy research doing what he calls “progressive, labour-oriented research.” He has also landed a position with McMaster University in Hamilton to teach economic policy to graduate students. That will be done by three weeks or so of intense teaching in Hamilton and then remotely from Sydney. He will also continue to advise Mr. Dias, particularly as Unifor enters negotations with the Canadian units of the Detroit Three automakers next year on a new contract.

The SSAE 18 Reporting Standard SOC 1 SOC 2 SOC 3 Support and Guidance for SSAE18, SOC 1, SOC 2, and SOC 3 reporting standards

Some organizations have heard of SAS 70, SSAE 16. and soon to be SSAE 18. but, don t really know WHY they need to pay to have a bunch of auditors trounce through their company for a month or two during the year, especially right after their financial audit just finished.
The answer is simple: Many companies will not even think about using your company to perform services for them without a clean Type II Report in place.
Some benefits of having an SSAE 16 performed :

  • Ability to perform outsourcing services for Public Companies.
    • If performing financially significant duties for a Public Company, they are required to use a SSAE 16 qualified provider as it is the only way to give investors assurance over controls that are not performed by the Company in question.
  • Public and Private companies are more likely to trust your organization with their data.
    • If you were to trust a company with your data, you would want complete assurance it will be handled with the utmost care
  • A year round accessible knowledge source (your auditors).
    • As a service organization, large or small, you will always have questions regarding your business and having a set of auditors in place with access to a wide array of business knowledge, it will allow you to bounce your questions and concerns off of a group of trusted individuals.
  • A third party to review your controls and activities to ensure they are functioning appropriately, and give advice on how to improve upon them.
    • Sometimes your internal audit department is good, but, not always as stringent as they should be. This will help to serve as a check on their work, as well as your staff. Additionally, if there were any findings noted, your auditors are in a great position to give you some tricks and tips to improve to ensure everything functions well the following period.
  • Improving performance of the organization.
    • Just the knowledge that a review is being performed of an employee s work that can have far reaching consequences for the company as a whole. No more, Oh, I didn t realize that reviewing user access was THAT important to do this month, sorry , now, everyone knows that if it s not done, the success or failure of the organization could rest upon them.

Think of the SSAE 16 or SSAE-18 audit as an annual investment into your company, increasing potential new clients. productivity and accountability .

This tip is focused on designing controls that reflect the process being testing, if they don t, a headache of massive proportions will be created once testing begins.
What do you do to make sure you don t screw this up? Have as many meetings as it takes to get it right.
What you need to do is sit down with the auditors, the department lead, the main employees responsible for performing the process, and anyone else whom could either play a role in testing or modifying the control in the future. Once that is done, Management should discuss what they determined the control to be and how it should operate, that is then reviewed by the auditors, and then the employees performing the tasks should be reconsulted to verify that the control still reflects their process accurately.
Many times people try to speed this process up and half-ass it, leaving many open items which upon testing could easily blow up into a huge problem. When the control isn t 100% agreed upon prior to testing and a deviation is noted, it s a tough call between failing the control and the ability to adjust it to accurately reflect the process. The problem is modifying a control after testing has begun is not proper and needs to be avoided at all costs.
Locking the controls locked down early on could save weeks in wrapping up your new SSAE 16 Report.
We have seen issues like this cause delays in issuing of the report to the client and running additional fees, since adjusting controls isn t free. Coming from the perspective of the auditor, we can let you know the pitfalls, consequences and how to best navigate the audit process. If you have any comments or questions please leave them below!

A SOC 1 Report (System and Organization Controls Report ) is a report on Controls at a Service Organization which are relevant to user entities’ internal control over financial reporting. The SOC1 Report is what you would have previously considered to be the standard SAS70, complete with a Type I and Type II reports, but falls under the SSAE 16 guidance (and soon to be SSAE 18 ).

Please see the following articles discussing the SSAE 16 guidance and additional information related to the SOC 1 (Type I and Type II) Reports:

In addition to the SOC 1 report which is restricted to controls relevant to an audit of a user entity’s financial statements, the SOC 2 and SOC 3 reports have been created to address controls relevant to operations and compliance and will be discussed in further detail in the future.

Please see the SOC 1 Reporting Guide page for additional information.

SSAE 16 is an enhancement to the current standard for Reporting on Controls at a Service Organization, the SAS70. The changes made to the standard will bring your company, and the rest of the companies in the US, up to date with new international service organization reporting standards, the ISAE 3402. The adjustments made from SAS 70 to SSAE 16 will help you and your counterparts in the US compete on an international level; allowing companies around the world to give you their business with complete confidence .

SSAE16 is now effective as of June 15, 2011, and if you have not made the necessary adjustments required, now is the time to find a quality provider to discuss the proper steps. All organizations are now required to issue their Service Auditor Reports under the SSAE 16 standards in an SOC 1 Report.

The soon to be effective, SSAE-18. is expected to follow a similar reporting structure to the SSAE-16 within a SOC 1 report.

Who Needs an SSAE 16 (SOC 1 ) Audit?

If your Company (the Service Organization ) performs outsourced services that affect the financial statements of another Company (the User Organization ), you will more than likely be asked to provide an SSAE16 Type II Report, especially if the User Organization is publicly traded.
Some example industries include:

  • Payroll Processing
  • Loan Servicing
  • Data Center /Co-Location/Network Monitoring Services
  • Software as a Service (SaaS )
  • Medical Claims Processors

What you Need to Know:

Before starting the SSAE 16 process, there are a number of considerations one must take into account that can save considerable time, effort, and money in the long run. Use the following items as a mini checklist for yourself:

  • Does my Company need an SSAE16, or, are we doing it just because someone asked?
  • Reports on the low end can run at least $15,000 a year, will the business lost be less of a burden than the cost of the report itself?
  • Does your company have defined Business Process and IT controls in place, or, will you need assistance developing and implementing them (readiness assessment)?
  • Have you determined the controls in place which affect the outsourced services being provided?
  • Have key stakeholders been defined and included in discussions?

There are many other issues to consider before engaging a CPA firm to help with your SSAE 16, for a more detailed checklist please see The SSAE 16 Checklist

You may have heard SSAE-18 is on the horizon for reports issued as of May 1, 2017. There are some important updates discussed in here: SSAE-18 An Update to SSAE-16 .

As the standard is formalized and the date approaches we will continue to provide more information to help you prepare for these changes.

Cloud-Based Mail Backup and Recovery with Veeam Backup for Microsoft Office 365

To help you always remain in control of your data, we developed a solution that allows you to mitigate the risk of losing access to your Exchange Online email data and ensure availability to your users. Meet the new Veeam Backup for Microsoft Office 365 .

Protecting Office 365 Exchange Online s data integrity through built-in mechanisms

Let s look at how organizations mail is protected in the cloud. Of course, an administrator monitors the Exchange-side policies, especially the retention policy for remote sites. If the retention period for mail in the Deleted Items store has not expired, mail may be retrieved and recovered from it. By default, the retention period is 30 days; you can change this value in the Exchange Admin Center.

For more information on MRM (messaging records management) policy options, read this Microsoft TechNet article .

To protect your mail data in the cloud, Microsoft Exchange Data Availability Groups (DAG) are also used, as well as the traditional backup tools aimed at helping you in disaster recovery.

However, failures may occur on the user side, too, and you definitely need a solution to protect organizations mail against data loss scenarios not covered by traditional tools. This is exactly the situation where the new Veeam Backup for Microsoft Office 365 can help. This solution backs up mailbox data of an Office 365 organization to a local repository, allowing you to meet the 3-2-1 rule for data protection. It also offers flexible recovery options, providing for quick search and restore of individual mailbox items residing in either archived Office 365 content or on-premises Exchange backups.

How Veeam Backup for Microsoft Office 365 works

As you see in the picture below, the work flow is rather simple:

1. Veeam Backup for Microsoft Office 365 gathers mailbox data from Exchange Online using Exchange Web Services and PowerShell, and stores it in the repository; data is transferred using SSL. To carry out these operations automatically, an administrator creates and schedules a backup job. Each successful job run creates a restore point where the corresponding state of the mailbox data store is kept.

2, 3. A user selects the mailbox database state to work with (as of the latest restore point, or as of the certain point in time), and this data store is automatically added to the Veeam Explorer for Microsoft Exchange scope. This way, it becomes available for browsing and restore of mailbox items and folders.

4. Then users can utilize browsing, searching and restore capabilities of Veeam Explorer for Microsoft Exchange. They include:

  • Export of mailboxes, folders and items as Personal Folder Files (.pst)
  • Saving mailbox items as Microsoft Exchange Mail Documents (.msg)
  • Sending mailboxes, folders and items as attachments via email
  • Restoring mailboxes, folders and items to Exchange Online or on-premises Exchange Organization

In this post you ll find information about Installation and Configuration. To learn more about Veeam Explorer for Microsoft Office 365, visit the product preview page. Veeam forum and Help Center.

    Corvette Z06

The Corvette has been many things since it hit the market in 1953 – boulevard cruiser, V-8 phallic symbol, teenage fantasy, etc. Never mind all that. The seventh-generation Corvette (known as the C7) is brilliant, and Z06 is its |ultimate iteration. The ZO6 uses the same hydro-formed aluminum chassis as the standard C7, but adds bigger brakes, track-worthy suspension, and a low-profile supercharger that pushed the V-8 up to 650 horsepower. The Z06 competes with Porsches and Ferraris for a fraction of the price.

    Acura NSX

This is the production version of the NSX show car, which first surfaced in 2012. The NSX resurrects a legendary sports car brand, but with a modern twist. Like the first NSX, which debuted in 1990, the new car has its engine in the middle. But that’s where the resemblance ends: beneath the 2015 car’s curvaceous skin is a high-tech hybrid power train that includes an internal combustion V-6 and three electric motors.

    Alfa Romeo 4C Spider

The affordable, mid-engine sports car has been an oxymoron for some time now. The Ferrari 458 and Lamborghini Huracan may be beautiful, but they cost as much as a decent house. Ditto for the McLaren 12C and P1. Even the Porsche Cayman and Lotus Evora can run to more than $100,000. But now there’s the Alfa 4C – it starts at $61,995. The 4C brings the traditional benefits of the mid-engine layout (optimized weight distribution and quick-turning response) in a compact, high-tech package. The chassis features a carbon central tub with bolt-on aluminum sub-frames. It’s an Italian exotic, but in a less expensive package.
