Auto Jobs Overview

Auto jobs take in a range of specific job titles. They may include sales, maintenance, collision repair, computer programming, and other jobs that relate to the auto industry. When you think of auto jobs, however, the first thing that comes to mind may be positions dealing with the repair and maintenance of vehicles. A maintenance mechanic’s normal duties include:

  • Performing diagnostics on vehicles to discover the causes of odd noises or faulty performance;
  • Carrying out routine maintenance such as oil changes and tire rotations;
  • Interacting with customers to explain the work a vehicle requires;
  • And double-checking work to make sure that vehicles are safe to drive.

Auto Jobs Education Requirements

The education requirements for auto jobs vary depending on job title. A maintenance mechanic may need a high school diploma as well as a certificate from an auto mechanic program. Some mechanics may receive extensive on-the-job training. Some positions may require certifications from car manufacturers.

Other auto jobs, such as those in auto body repair. or automotive design, may have different educational requirements.

Auto Job Market

The market for auto jobs is fair across Canada, but it is stronger in some places than in others. For example, in Alberta, this occupation has moderate levels of unemployment, and a moderate number of people will retire in coming years. In New Brunswick, however, the unemployment rate for auto mechanics is higher.

Auto Jobs Salary Information

Some auto jobs offer higher pay than others. An auto mechanic can expect to make between C$13 and C$33 per hour. An automotive engineer may take in between C$24 and C$57 per hour. An auto detailer can make between C$10 and C$22 per hour. Location also plays a role in wage; the median wage for auto mechanics is higher in Alberta than in British Columbia or Manitoba.

Automotive Employment Information

Automotive Industry Overview

The US automotive repair and maintenance industry includes about 165,000 locations with total annual revenue of $85 billion, according to Hoovers. The largest companies offering automotive jobs in this sector include Meineke, Midas, Monro Muffler Brake, Precision Auto Care and Safelite Group. The auto service industry is highly fragmented. The 50 largest companies generate less than 10 percent of revenue. Most jobs in automotive service are with independent shops and one of the country’s 45,000 auto dealerships.

US auto manufacturing is dominated by GM, Ford and Chrysler and increasingly by Asian automakers such as Toyota and Honda. Detroit’s Big Three ring up about $200 billion in annual sales, according to Hoovers. Car dealers bring in about $700 billion at retail.

Automotive Job Market

Automotive service technicians and mechanics held more than 720,000 jobs in 2010, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). Nearly 1.7 million people held jobs at motor vehicle and parts dealers as of June 2012, the BLS reports. A further 153,310 worked in motor vehicle manufacturing as of May 2011.

Much job growth in the automotive service industry will be concentrated toward the high and low ends of technological expertise. All vehicles need oil changes and brake shoe replacement, so the skills required to perform these low-tech tasks will remain in demand. At the high end, computer diagnostics of engines and other vehicle systems are continuously evolving, so auto technicians with the ability to keep up with these changes should find automotive work. As carmakers strive to make their products safer and more fuel efficient in response to consumer demand and government mandate, automotive engineers should find ample automotive job opportunities.

New car dealers, having suffered a wave of consolidation through the 2007-2009 recession, are now cautiously increasing headcount, according to an April 2012 IBISWorld report.

Common automotive careers include auto mechanic, automotive service manager, service writer, automotive sales manager, automotive mechanical engineer, automotive applications engineer and automotive plant manager.

Automotive Salaries

Automotive service technicians and mechanics earned mean wages of $38,560 in May 2011, according to the BLS. Average salaries for mechanical engineers working in motor vehicle manufacturing were $95,080. Team assemblers earned an average of $47,570.

      Introducing: The Email Template That ll Get You a Meeting With Anyone You Ask

      I’ve had the best time reading my email lately. Trust me, I know that’s a pretty rare thing to say—it’s just that I’ve been asking tons of awesome people to go on informational interviews with me, and they’ve almost all said yes.

      Wondering how to score some sweet informational interviews of your own? I know, asking can be hard—after all, you’re proposing that busy and important strangers take time out of their schedules to meet with you.

      Luckily for you, I’ve recently perfected the art of the ask. And since this information is so valuable, I’ll obviously share it. Plus, I’ll explain how to tailor the email to make it your own. Before you know it, you’ll love scrolling through your Gmail as well.

      The Template

      Dear [first name],

      My name is [your name], and I’m a [job title] who works in [your location]. I’m reaching out because [reason why you want to speak with this person]. I’d love to learn more about [two or three things you’d like to learn from the person].

      I’m sure you’re busy, so even 20 minutes would be appreciated.

      An Example

      Here’s what that looks like once you’ve filled it in:

      My name is Aja Frost, and I’m a college student who’s interning in the city until mid-August. Your career path is very inspirational to me: I don’t know very many people who have worked in marketing at Google, Facebook, and Apple. As an aspiring marketer, I’d love to learn more about which skills you’ve used the most and what you’d expect from an entry-level employee in your department.

      I’m sure you’re busy, so even 20 minutes would be greatly appreciated.

      The Breakdown

      Let’s do a line-by-line analysis so you can see what each accomplishes.

      In the salutation, I like to use the person’s first name. “Dear Jane Doe” or “Dear Ms. Doe” sounds too stilted and formal to me.

      The opening line should contextualize your message. Since I’m a student, I have a built-in advantage—professionals are usually pretty open to helping out the young and inexperienced. But, hearing from someone a little higher up can be really flattering, too—so no matter where you are on the corporate ladder, include your job title, employer, and location.

      My name is Carrie Smith, and I’m a senior product manager at Unison Healthcare in Tampa, Florida.

      The next line should explain why you’re writing to him or her. Go ahead and make it flattering. While I’m not suggesting you lay it on really thick, there’s got to be a reason you chose this specific person, so include it.

      I’ve previously said:

      “You have my dream job at my dream company. ” and “I was impressed to see the transition you made from finance to content strategy. ”

      After that, you’ll want to include some very specific questions. Too many people show up to informational interviews with no idea what to ask, resulting in wasted time for all parties involved. If people see you’ve got a concrete goal for the meeting, they’ll be much more likely to say yes.

      I always, always end with the same line: “I’m sure you’re busy, so. ” This statement shows you know you’re requesting a big favor. And just acknowledging that fact improves your chances for success.

      The Extra Mile

      You should definitely research people before you ask them to interviews. Not only will knowing their backgrounds help during the actual conversation, but you’ll usually find tidbits you can drop into your ask to make it more compelling. After scrolling through a CEO’s recent Twitter history, I found a post raving about a Brooklyn taco spot. When I asked her to meet me, I proposed going to that very taco spot. She agreed with far more enthusiasm than she likely would’ve if I’d asked her to meet at Starbucks.

      On a different occasion, I saw a content strategist I was interested in contacting had spoken on a panel about inbound marketing. So in that email, I wrote, “I’d love to learn more about inbound marketing best practices and how to use location-specific strategies.”

      By making a little extra effort, your request will be much more impressive.

      The Follow-Up

      Best case scenario: Your target answers, you make plans to get coffee, and you have an awesome and productive conversation. But what if he or she doesn’t answer? I usually wait a week, then send a follow-up email.

      Dear [his or her name],

      I hope you’re having a great week! I wanted to follow up on my request for an informational interview. As I explained in my previous email, [reason why this person has impressed you] and I’d love to hear about [questions you’d like to ask]. I’m happy to meet whenever and wherever is convenient for you. However, if your schedule is too full, I completely understand.

      You’d be shocked at the number of people who don’t respond to your first query but do get back to you after the second. What I’ve learned from that is that most people aren’t ignoring you, the first email just arrived at an inopportune time to answer and was then forgotten.

      However, if you’ve sent the second email and you still hear nothing, move on to your next prospect. There are plenty of people who will talk to you, so don’t spend too much energy chasing down one person.

      After you’ve taken my template and made it your own, I’m confident you’ll be going on tons of coffee dates of your own. Good luck!

      My Lucasfilm job: Wrangling Wookiees and dressing like Jabba

      Star Wars fan Bonnie Burton worked for George Lucas for a decade. In this May the 4th love letter to Lucasfilm, she shares highlights like marrying R2-D2.

      When your day job involves riding along with Chewbacca to a NASA event and taking photos of George Lucas hanging out with Ewoks, it’s hard to complain. I worked at Lucasfilm from 2003 to 2013 doing that and a whole lot more.

      I was a lifelong Star Wars fan from the time I saw the first movie at a drive-in theater in the ’70s. As a kid I twisted my long hair into Princess Leia buns and acted out Star Wars scenes on the school playground. But I never dreamed I’d be part of the franchise that sparked my imagination as a child. Then I answered a Craigslist job posting, and after a bunch of interviews, I found myself one of the lucky few working for Lucasfilm, where I eventually became senior editor of its website StarWars.com .

      The job kept me busy. I wrote about the latest Star Wars news for the site and interviewed the cast and crew of various Star Wars films, TV shows and video games. I learned quickly how to spell every creature, character, vehicle, weapon and planet name. Trust me when I say it’s easy to misspell Wookiee or Kashyyyk.

      I spoke with celebrities like Seth Green. J.J. Abrams. Simon Pegg. Milo Ventimiglia and Bill Hader about their love for Star Wars, and heard some great stories. Hader knew he’d be smitten with his future wife when he first saw her kitchen curtains made from vintage Star Wars bedsheets. Ventimiglia and his friends reenacted lightsaber fights in parking garages. I also oversaw the site’s kids’ section, which included craft tutorials. And I ran the Star Wars forums and social media accounts.

      I was always honored when my path intersected with legendary Star Wars actors like Carrie Fisher. whose courage and honesty dealing with her personal demons inspired me to face my own. as well as Christopher Lee (Count Dooku), Mark Hamill (Luke Skywalker) and Peter Mayhew (Chewbacca).

      And it was always thrilling to work for the man responsible for it all — George Lucas. I often found myself interviewing Lucas for a StarWars.com feature, or accompanying him with the Lucasfilm PR team to press events that always bordered on the surreal because I was shadowing one of my childhood heroes. I wasn’t exactly tongue-tied, but it’s rare to get to see your heroes in action in the real world. And that kind of experience can humble anyone.

      My decade working for George Lucas, in pictures

      At the 2007 Rose Bowl Parade. my job included following around Lucas — who was that year’s grand marshal. He met with hundreds of fans from all over the world in the 501st Legion who dressed up as Stormtroopers and marched in the parade. The parade that year also had Star Wars-themed floats and a marching band whose members played Star Wars music in character costumes.

      I was constantly starstruck by Lucas, but I was just as excited to work with many of the people behind the scenes of Star Wars, like Industrial Light Magic and Lucasfilm icons such as special effects artist and supervisor Dennis Muren, visual effects supervisor John Knoll and sound designer Ben Burtt.

      But Lucasfilm wasn’t just about being surrounded by incredibly talented people every day. It was also one of the most creative places around for letting your inner geek loose and getting paid for it. There were times I would test our latest licensees’ Star Wars costumes to see how durable they were. Not many companies encourage their employees to dress up as Jabba the Hutt for the day like I did.       We even had our own coffee house, Javva the Hutt, inside one of the main Lucasfilm buildings on the Presidio campus in San Francisco where we could get extra-strong espresso, lattes and, of course, a simple dark roast brew that would impress even the likes of Darth Vader.

      More on me and Star Wars

      I worked in quite a few different open office spaces at Lucasfilm, but when I finally got an office of my own, I managed to cram it full of photos, collectibles, crafts made by fans, posters and everything else my childhood-self would have loved.

      I had a bookcase dedicated to my favorite character, R2-D2. There were R2-D2 toys, but the collection also included some unexpected items in the shape of the little droid: salt and pepper shakers, a soy sauce container, pencil holder, painting set, dice holder, soap and jewelry.

      When I wasn’t working at Lucasfilm’s offices, I would be sent to fan conventions in the United States, England and Japan. Everywhere I went I’d see fans of all ages dressed as their favorite characters and creatures. It was a constant reminder of how much Star Wars influenced generations of people to dream about a galaxy far, far away.

      I even offered up my social life for an article for the website when I married beloved droid R2-D2 at Star Wars Celebration. After a whirlwind romance of speed dating and cantina bar moments, Artoo and I got married by Darth Maul. Darth Vader was best man and supermodel-supergeek Adrianne Curry, dressed as an Imperial Officer, was my maid of honor. The event got a lot of media attention and my parents were rather confused by the union, to say the least.
