Information theft has led to the compromise of intellectual property, credit card information, electronic funds, identity theft, and a host of other negative consequences. Electronic theft, or cyber crime affects individuals, corporations and government entities. Breaches are routinely perpetrated by, ill intended employees, ex-employees, organized crime groups, and foreign government sponsored espionage groups.

While government mandates are driving organizations to address compliance initiatives, the security of many data assets has seen limited improvement. Many organizations are struggling quietly having been victimized by information theft and are seeking to understand the potential consequences and methods to recovery. Information Defense helps organizations to identify threats to intellectual property and sensitive data assets along with the necessary measures to prepare for, prevent, and respond to cyber crime and data theft.

We assist organizations to:

  • Secure data environments through technical measures
  • Secure data through improved information security process and procedures
  • Respond to and recover from information security breaches
  • Build incident response and data forensic teams
  • Model and measure risk to information assets and intellectual property
  • Address compliance initiatives such as PCI, Red Flags Rule and others

Our methods follow a comprehensive risk based approach through our Information Security Management Model (ISMM). The protection of information assets within the workplace is a significant issue. Our approach enables organizations to Prepare, Prevent and Respond to cyber crime.

News 9 Puts Do-It-Yourself Hail Damage Repair To The Test, do it yourself auto repair.#Do #it #yourself #auto #repair

do it yourself auto repair

Recent severe weather caused widespread damage across the metro. Roof damage and busted car windows can cost thousands to repair, but what about those hail dents in the body of your car?

Some people say skip the body shop all together. But is that a good idea?

If you re like thousands of other Oklahomans who suffered hail damage from the recent storm, you might have thought to yourself. Can you save a few bucks on repairs? Well we decided to find out if there are really any cheap and effective do it yourself repair methods.

A simple Google search for hail damage returns dozens of result for “do it yourself” repairs. Some reviews say they work, others say no way.

So we grabbed the dry ice, compressed air, a hair dryer, the “Pops-a-dent” kit, and, of course, the damaged car to test them on.

First up is the “Pops-a-dent.” The directions say apply a generous amount of hot glue, attach the pad to the car and wait.

In the meantime, we moved on some other suggestions. The guy in an instruction video says to heat up the area around the dent with a hair dryer until it s hot to the touch, and then put the dry ice over the dent. It s supposed to force the metal to contract and dent pops out, or not.

It turns out the dent is still there.

With that, we tried the compressed air after heating up the dented area, which is supposed to have the same effect, but no luck.

Eight-minutes later and the “Pops-a-dent” is ready. It popped, but the dent is still there.

We couldn t get any of these methods to work, but several of our viewers told us on Facebook it can work.

Some of these techniques might work better on bigger dents, so feel free to try them. But judging by the amount of dents this recent hail storm left behind, it might just be worth it to take it to the body shop.

So if you do take your car to a repair shop, there are a few things you want to keep in mind. Ask people you know to recommend a good place, never pay up front and check the company s Better Business Bureau grade.

Is it time to sell your old car or truck? Here’s how to tell

By: Margarette Burnette, May 09th 2014

Each year you drive your old car is one more year you don’t have to worry about paying for a new one.

Yet, with every turn of the odometer, you’re one mile closer to big repair and maintenance bills.

At some point, it costs so much to keep your old ride on the road that you’d be better off investing all of the money you’re spending at the garage on a new car or truck. Our database of the best auto loan rates can help get you started.

There’s no magical mileage threshold that tells you when it’s time to ditch your car. In fact, many of today’s vehicles routinely exceed 100,000 miles without experiencing major mechanical problems.

But if you’re being hit with one repair bill after another, these 5 steps can help you decide if the time has come to ditch your old car or truck.

Step 1. Find out what your car is worth.

All smart decision-making starts with this.

To find out what your car is worth, research it on an auto valuation site, such as Edmunds.com or Kelley Blue Book (kbb.com).

You’ll be asked a few questions about the year, make and model of your car, the odometer reading and the condition it’s in, taking any repairs you’re planning to make into account.

Those websites will provide you with three potential values for your car.

The one you want to use is the trade-in value, which is the lowest of the three estimates.

This is the amount you can expect to receive from a dealer if you include your current car in a deal to buy another car there.

Let one of the best commuting cars of 2014 take the stress and worry out of those slogs to work, the supermarket and other daily destinations. They’re safe and economical but don’t scrimp on creature comforts, including automatic transmissions and air-conditioning. With prices starting at just over $19,000 and climbing to just under $31,000, we’re confident you’ll find the perfect ride.

Step 2. Determine how much it will cost to keep it on the road.

Ask your mechanic for a rundown of all the:

  • Big repairs that must be done right now to keep your vehicle running.
  • Additional repairs that can be postponed but need to be done over the next year.
  • Major maintenance that will come due during the next 12 months based on how many miles are on the car.

We’re not talking about oil changes.

We’re talking about the more costly work required as vehicles reach 60,000 to 100,000 miles — everything from changing the transmission fluid and coolant to replacing worn-out tires, brake pads and rotors, water pumps, suspension parts and timing belts.

Check your owner’s manual for the manufacturer’s recommended maintenance schedule. If you don’t have the manual, any reputable shop can check the schedule for your car and tell you exactly what you’ll need to do and how much those repairs will cost.

Postpone that work, and you’ll run a greater risk that your car will break down and stick you with an even bigger repair bill once you’ve been towed to the shop.

Take the timing belt, for example. It connects the crankshaft to the camshaft and controls the opening and closing of the valves in your engine.

Replacing a timing belt often costs $600 or more. But if you don’t do it, you can pretty much count on a worn-out timing belt breaking at some point, seriously damaging your engine.

Then it would cost $2,000 or more to get it running again.

Also, watch for two signs of big trouble:

  • Blue smoke out the tailpipe means you’re burning oil, which very likely indicates the oncoming need for an engine replacement. (A little white smoke until the engine warms up is OK.)
  • Slipping between gear changes means your automatic transmission is failing. (Slipping is where the engine revs up without any appreciable increase in speed.)

Add up all of the repairs and maintenance you’ll need to do over the next year, and compare it to the trade-in value of your car.

If you’ll have to spend more than the car is worth to keep it on the road for another year, then it makes financial sense to invest that money in a new ride.

Step 4. Recalculate your costs using past repair bills.

You aren’t finished if that comparison falls on the side of keeping your old car, especially if it’s not a decisive difference.

Mechanics can’t look at your car and predict everything that’s likely to break over the next year, so maybe you didn’t have a list of estimated future repairs in Step 2.

That doesn’t mean you’re not going to have any.

Reliability guides, such as the ones from Consumer Reports. provide entire lists of problems that consistently plague almost every make and model as it ages.

In fact, here’s a pretty tried-and-true rule of car ownership: The older your car gets, the more stuff breaks.

BEWARE! I took my car to this guy  (Norman Heck aka Skip ), because I trusted him. He really seemed to know his stuff, and I thought he was an honest and professional mechanic. He not only scratched my hood so deep that the paint came off (looks like someone put a mechanical component on the top of it and it slid), but he didn t even own up to the responsibility of not connecting the power steering pump to the reservoir correctly! His response to anything is that it was like that before he got it. Along with that, my car was in the shop nearly two weeks. I was told it would only take a few days. He has great rates, but it is NOT worth it. I REGRET TAKING MY VEHICLE TO HIM! It was a HUGE mistake. Do It Yourself Automotive is a joke, and if you don t believe me; take a good look around the shop and at the way things are run. Take your car elsewhere if you don t want any trouble.

Do It Yourself Automotives response to Lucas K. As we all know, You can t please everyone all the time. While some of what Lucas is saying is accurate, he is not telling the whole story. On 7/3/12 Lucas came to us asking us to replace his timing chains and motor mounts on his 2006 Altima. We agreed and I told him we would try to get his car back by Friday the 6th. I ordered his parts from a Nissan Dealership and they arrived the next day. We got the motor out of the car on Thursday the 5th and found a very worn set of Chains, Tensioners and Guides as well as 3 of the four motor mounts.  Friday we started to put his car back together and found that the Dealer had sent us some wrong parts and completely left out another part. This put us in a bind as the parts had to be special ordered and would take a couple of days to get. Being Friday afternoon, the dealer told us that the soonest we could get them was Wednesday afternoon. Throughout this process we were in contact with Lucas making sure he had transportation. He continually said it s no problem, He was using a company car. On Tuesday the 10th he told us he had to give the company car back to a coworker and needed transportation. At that time we rented Lucas a car at no cost to him, until we could complete the repairs on his. On Saturday the 14th we finished his car and he picked it up. He was back in 15 minutes complaining of steering  and transmission issues with the car. He had been in about a week or two prior to the timing chain/motor mount repairs complaining of steering issues. I test drove the car and found no problems. I explained to him that we repaired the timing chains on his car, not the steering or the transmission. Neither of the issues have anything to do with the work we performed. John, Our ASE Certified Master Technician went with him on a test drive to experience these issues and found nothing. John asked Lucas how the engine ran and Lucas responded, Its GREAT! John replied, that s what we fixed.  John also explained to me after the ride that Lucas was driving the car like it was a NASCAR event and actually scared John.  Lucas returned again an hour or so later still complaining of a clicking in the steering wheel which I could not recreate. I explained to Lucas that we would love to look into these issues and repair them at an additional cost. He said he would return in a week or so. On7/19/12 Lucas came to our shop saying his steering was whining. I looked and his reservoir was a little low on fluid so I filled it up at no cost to him. As I was doing this he said he had found a scratch on the hood of his car the day before and accused us of causing it. As I tried to explain the care we took he kept cutting me off and getting louder and eventually yelling. This I admit got me excited and I got angry and told him to leave the property.  This is a Black car. There is no way one could miss the scratches he showed me for 5 days and then just all of a sudden see them. They stood out like a neon sign. We took very good care to make sure that we caused no damage to his vehicle or any other for that matter. The first thing we did when his car came in, was take the hood off the car completely wrap it up and placed it in another part of the shop where it couldn t get damaged. To us it seems he wants to blame us for every problem the car has now.   He was quoted $2230.00 and his final bill came to $2097.84.   Sincerely, DIY Automotive

Buying a car online: Women should do it. #chicago #auto #show

#buy car online
#

You should do it. Especially if you’re a woman.

If you ve ever bought a car, you are familiar with the stomach-churching moment after the test drive when the salesman asks, What would it take you to buy today? and starts scratching out numbers on a pad. The process is notoriously confusing for everyone, but there s tons of evidence showing this system disadvantages women more than men. Buying online doesn t merely eliminate the physical discomfort women feel in car dealerships, though that counts for a lot. (Over email, no one asks about your husband; heck, no one even needs know your gender.) More importantly, it eliminates the landmines of Haggling While Female.

For a variety of reasons, women are not as good at negotiating as men. For one thing, we re not as practiced at it. Several studies have shown that women tend to negotiate less often. in part because the assertiveness required for the task gets socialized out of us. After all, nice girls aren t supposed to cause conflict, and there are real-world implications for those who buck the rules. In one study. both men and women pronounced female job applicants less hirable when they asked for more compensation than when male applicants did the same thing. (Male subjects in particular were less likely to want to work with women who tried to negotiate.) So it s not surprising that negotiating causes women more anxiety than it causes men and that women are less likely to realize they can negotiate in a given situation. You have to do all sorts of tricky things to get them to haggle, like describe it as asking instead of negotiating or explicitly tell them that they re allowed to do it. It s no wonder that women were said to flock to the defunct car company Saturn. which was known for its no-haggle policy.

Part of what s so crazy about buying a car the traditional way is that the Wild West pricing means there s no way to know whether the deck is stacked against you from the outset merely because you re a woman. Studies conducted in the 90s by economist Ian Ayres showed that Chicago-area dealerships routinely quoted blacks and women higher initial offers than white men, so that even after haggling they wound up with higher prices. Data from auto repair shops shows something more nuanced: Women are quoted higher prices unless they break gender stereotypes, either by showing they know the market rate for a repair or by insisting on a discount. All of which is why, when women buy a car, we first research the bejesus out of it. We know that certain salesmen will be inclined to treat us as easy marks, and we ll need to defy their expectations. So we prep and prep and then show up, hoping we don t get a jerk. Sure, we can request a different salesman or hit another dealership, but we ll pay for it in wasted time.

There s one factor that does away with a ton of these gender-based problems. According to the work of DePaul professor Alice Stuhlmacher, women consistently do better when they negotiate virtually. Stuhlmacher and colleagues compared face-to-face negotiations with those conducted online, by phone, or by video and found that time and again, women were more assertive when they weren t haggling face-to-face. Perhaps because they were less concerned about preserving relationships or coming across as nice, women were more apt to do things like lie for tactical reasons or stand firm at a number instead of making a counteroffer. There wasn t this gap between what s considered appropriate female behavior and what s smart negotiating behavior. Men, who face no repercussions for what s deemed a typically masculine endeavor, behaved the same regardless of the setting.

Virtual settings also appear to upset hierarchies. conferring more favorable outcomes on those with less power. Car dealerships are a prime example of settings where women have less power for a whole host of reasons because they are a minority, because automobiles are considered a traditionally masculine realm, and because the consumer in general is confused by the way car pricing works. (Is that $795 destination fee really necessary? Has the dealer s invoice price been inflated so you think you re getting a better deal?) Not only do virtual settings eliminate the status markers that might otherwise inhibit behavior, but they make it easier to remain poker-faced even if you are intimidated.

The major advantage I felt I had negotiating over email was time. High-pressure tactics in car dealerships rely, in part, on the consumer s desire to end a stressful experience as soon as possible. But, thoroughly empowered by all the information I had at hand, I found emailing back and forth with salesmen to be fun. The power dynamic was reversed; the dealerships now were the ones eager to secure my deposit before I got a better deal or before the end of the month, so they could make their numbers. I took my time. I looked up what others in my area had paid for the same car. I emailed around the lowest price I got (a good $2,500 under the highest) to see if other dealers could match it. I asked the dealers to enumerate every fee being added to the quoted price, and then I looked up the fees to see if they were legitimate. I inquired who was willing to trade with other dealers to get us the car in blue and who was willing to deliver the car to our house. (One dealership was, but the price was still too high.) Reading questions other buyers had asked alerted me to issues I hadn t considered and gave me social reinforcement that such questions were allowed. What surprised me was that, freed from that terrible certainty that I was going to get screwed one way or another, I really liked negotiating. Being the well-informed, hard-nosed customer felt like karmic retribution for all those women talked down to, quoted higher prices, or told they d look so good in a certain car.

In the end, playing dealers off one another was an interesting experiment, and several places lowered their prices by quite a bit, but the shop with the initial lowest quote was still the best. So I put down a deposit by email, and one Saturday, my husband, my daughter, and I drove out to New Jersey to pick up our new car. We walked in, signed our names a thousand times, and drove out with our Mazda 5 at the agreed-upon price in a mere hour.

Afterward, my husband said he d noticed several salesmen in the store preferred to make eye contact with him. Maybe so, but if it were the case, I didn t notice. I was so damn happy.

How Much Does it Cost to Paint a Car?

The Process

A good paint job for a car requires extensive preparation, pricey materials and specialized skills. For this reason, the first factor in the price of painting a car will be the quality of work and the amount of time a garage puts into the job. First, the vehicle will be washed, the original paints will be sanded down and the chrome and windows will be covered. After the preparation has been completed, a thick primer is applied to smooth the body panels and provide some material for final sanding and smoothing. Next comes one or more layers of colored paint, often topped by a clear coat that adds some protection and depth of shine. Sometimes the clear coat is tinted with pigment, or contains additives for various finishes. Different paint shops may treat each stage differently. Some may run through preparation quickly, while others will take the time to do detailed work. The quality of work depends on what a consumer is willing to pay for the job.

Materials

Besides the cost of labor, several materials are included in the cost of painting a car. Someone who decides to paint his own car should expect to purchase some specialized tools such as a spray gun and covers for windows and chrome. Those who go to a garage will still be paying for primer, paint and the clear coatings. Because several layers of each paint are required, a full complement of decent materials can fall in the range of $1,000 to $1,500. But like everything else, these prices can change dramatically based upon quality. Top-of-the-line paints that change colors, or contain metallic, pearlescent or iridescent additives can cost more than $5,000, while the most basic varieties can be found for only a few hundred dollars. Some colors, especially reds, can also cost more. Vehicle size is an obvious if often overlooked consideration, because it takes three times as much paint to cover a Hummer as a Geo Metro.

Labor

Labor costs vary greatly in different areas. While quick paint jobs can be found for under $500, preparation is usually nonexistent and the application of paint tends to be uneven and sloppy. Most garages will complete the entire process from preparation to finish for $2,000 to $3,000 in labor. The cost of labor will also rise and fall with the size of a vehicle, largely because of the preparation process. Many garages include minor body work such as the removal of scratches and small dents during a paint job, but the best will take the time to sculpt a vehicle’s panels into dead-straight canvases for the thin paint to lie on. Often, it’s this preparation that makes the difference between a bargain re-spray and a stunning showpiece. Upper-end labor costs can reach $50,000 or more, but these prices tend to be reserved for vehicles that require lots of body preparation, or get specialized paint jobs like fades, two-tones, stripes or pinstriping, or candy colors that require very experienced painters.

Final Prices

With the combination of labor and materials, a typical decent paint job will be in the range of $3,000 to $4,500. It’s also worth bearing in mind that changing the color of a vehicle’s paint from stock can add 25 percent or more to the price, because the painters have to paint under the hood, inside the door jambs, under the trunk lid, and anywhere else the factory paint will show. The labor costs alone for a full color change can add up quickly, as all of these difficult-to-reach areas must be stripped, sanded, masked and primed like any other.

Saving Money

Certainly, you can save a lot of money spraying the vehicle yourself — but that isn’t usually practical given the buy-in cost of tools and materials, and the expertise required to lay down a good paint job. The reality is that very few first paint jobs end up as cheap as expected, or look like anything you’d want your friends to see; so it’s probably best to leave the spraying itself to professionals. But that doesn’t mean you’re stuck paying full shop prices. Prep work is something most moderately adept people can do at home, and the materials to do it are generally cheap and readily available. Putting in some elbow grease beforehand, and showing up at the paint shop with your car on a trailer, already smoothed, sanded and masked can easily cut thousands off the price of the total job. And you should get your car back in a few days, instead of a few weeks or even months.

SHORT TRACK AUTO RACING. COM

SHORT TRACK AUTO RACING. COM

It is time for the short track racing community to have a serious and thoughtful discussion about what we are doing and what we need to do to improve our racing. That is my goal. Please understand that I am a rookie at writing. I am going to say some things that some people won t like, but I am not trying to offend anyone. My purpose is to stimulate a discussion. The more ideas put forth, the better the odds that we, as a group, can identify what needs to be done. At present there are a number of conversations going on about this subject and that is a good start, however these discussions tend to be isolated in that fans talk about what fans want, racers talk about what racers want, etc. I think what is needed is fans, racers, and promoters all included in the same discussion. We are all in this together, we all want better racing, and we all know that the current situation is not working.

I am sure the first question you will have is why does this guy think he is qualified to say these things? Good question. Over the last 50 years I have been a driver, owner, owner/driver, crew member, and spectator. I have also been involved on the promotion side of racing. I have built racing engines, racing parts, and complete race cars and motorcycles. I have been in drag racing, off road racing, short track racing, and motocross. You can put whatever value you want on that.

Short track racing in Southern California is what I want to discuss. My comments are aimed at dirt track racing, but some of this discussion applies to asphalt tracks as well. Currently short track racing has a shortage of race cars and a shortage of fans. There is no shortage of opinions about what caused this. Let s see if we can sort through all these ideas and opinions and come up with the fixes we need.

I have set this up as 2 pages. The first page is what I believe are some of the problems causing a decline in short track racing. This isn t all the problems and I plan on adding to this list. The items are numbered. The second page is a list of possible fixes for the problems (also numbered). You can comment on the problems and/or fixes in general or if you want to comment on a specific item you can reference that items number. Please keep it clean and on topic. This is important for the future of short track racing.

North Carolina Bill of Sale Form: How to Get One, Fill it Out, and the Required Information

January 27, 2012

In North Carolina. a bill of sale is not a requirement for you to sell a car. However, if you are contemplating selling a vehicle it is probably an idea to consider strongly.

An NC bill of sale form is not mandatory to be filed in the state. Strictly speaking, the only document you need to conduct a car sale in North Carolina is a correctly filled out and notarized certificate of title. The certificate of title assumes that you are the owner of the vehicle and the vehicle will be transferred to a second party for a specified amount.

Vehicle Bill of Sale Template

If you file a bill of sale form, the information on the form needs to include the name and address of the owner, the make and model of the vehicle being sold, and an accurate mileage at the time of sale.

Because this is a written agreement, it is a very good idea for you to ensure that:

  1. The check used to close the sale clears the buyer’s bank; as pointed out in various blogs there are some very nasty sales scams occurring at the moment involving used car sales.
  2. All the fields are filled out correctly.
  3. The transferee on the title is listed as you, the owner.
  4. The person to whom the vehicle is transferred is the buyer.
  5. The mileage is accurate, for which you may ask a police officer for an affidavit, just in case the question comes up.

Why Use a Bill of Sale

A bill of sale is an official and legal document which helps you before all legal and final papers are prepared. You should use a bill of sale because it offers a measure of protection to the seller as well as the customer. For example, if you were to sell a vehicle and after three or four days the buyer was to try to back out of the deal, then you have a legal document to which to refer that solidifies the purchase. If the buyer took your car for a test drive and brought the car back with damage, you can also ask for extra money and prove the earlier condition of the car with the help of the bill of sale. It is also suggested that you take good pictures of your car while making the sale.

Likewise, if the buyer has issues that must be addressed before a sale can be finalized, those issues can be addressed in a bill of sale that will give the seller coverage in case the buyer decides it is not the vehicle that was represented.

How to Get a Bill of Sale Form

This form can be found here. The site provides you with a form that you can use as a North Carolina vehicle bill of sale template. Be aware, though, that this is not a free option, it’s a “fee” option.

Topics covered

Auto/vehicle insurance is where you pay a regular premium and the insurer compensates you for any financial loss that occurs if you get involved in an accident.

Your basic policy should cover the following:

  • Bodily Injury Liability. This provides protection if the driver, policyholder, or the policyholder’s family member causes bodily injury to someone else.
  • Personal Injury Protection (PIP). If the passengers and driver of the policy holder’s vehicle are injured, PIP covers the cost of treatment and may also cover lost wages, cost of replacing services, and funeral costs. Search the internet for best auto insurance rates.
  • Property Damage Liability. If you or someone else permitted to drive your car damages others’ property, this coverage will protect you. When you look for free auto insurance quotes, make sure you will be covered under the Property Damage Liability coverage.
  • Collision coverage. This compensates for damage to the policy holder’s car as a result of collision with another car. Even if you are at fault, this term will cover the cost of repair to your car minus the deductible. If you are not at fault, then your insurer will try to recover the cost from the other driver’s insurer.
  • Comprehensive Coverage. Many of you may be asking yourselves “What is comprehensive auto insurance protection?”. If you suffer a loss due to theft or a damage caused by something other than a collision, like a fire, explosion, earthquake, or windstorm, then this protects you.
  • Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist Coverage (UM/UIM). Individuals who buy cheap car insurance are often underinsured and do not have enough money to pay for losses if they are involved in an accident. If an uninsured, underinsured, or hit-and-run driver hits you or your family member, this term will reimburse the cost of your damages. You will also be protected if you are hit as a pedestrian. When you buy car insurance compare quotes for UM/UIM coverage from different companies.

What are the benefits of buying auto insurance online?

With many companies offering online auto insurance quotes, it is easier for you to research the policies, terms, and conditions and compare them. You can also check the company’s auto insurance reviews to make the best choice.

Here are 4 benefits you can get if you buy auto insurance coverage online:

  • Easier research: The internet allows you to do extensive research on various companies without having to visit each company. You can easily find the cheapest legal auto insurance online to suit your budget.
  • 24/7 service: This is the best part about looking for information online; you can find information when you need it.
  • Manage a policy: You can manage your policy, print out proof of coverage, and view/ manage your bill online.
  • Claim: You can even file a claim online and follow it up online.

Which factors influence your auto insurance rates?

When you apply for an auto insurance coverage, the company sends over your application to the underwriters. The underwriters evaluate the level of risk associated with an applicant, and accordingly approve and fix his/her rate or reject the application. The factors which are usually considered for the auto insurance underwriting process are:

  1. Age and gender of the driver
  2. Driving records/ history of the one to be insured
  3. Prior claims history
  4. Efficiency of the driver (driving education )
  5. Model, make and type of the vehicle
  6. Age of the vehicle
  7. Mileage of the vehicle
  8. Location (where it’ll be used )
  9. Purpose for which the vehicle is used (work, personal, pleasure or commercial etc. )
  10. How the vehicle is garaged
  11. Your choice of deductible, limits of coverage and benefits
  12. Auto insurance score

Converting to a low cost policy

Discount auto insurance schemes can help you convert your basic policy into a low cost auto insurance policy. You can find many cheap auto insurance quotes that will allow you to save money and provide adequate coverage. Take a look at few of the ways to save money.

  1. Safety measures. A few insurers offer discounts for safety measures like anti-lock brakes on used cars.
  2. Multiple policy rates. Some of the bigger insurance companies that provide different types of insurance offer “bundle” rates if you buy several kinds of insurance, like life insurance and homeowner’s insurance in addition to your car insurance.
  3. Safe driver’s discount. In many cases, insurers offer a safe driver’s discount if you go for a certain period without a ticket or accident, usually 3 years.
  4. Renewal discount. If you have been with an insurer for a long time, they might offer a renewal discount to get you to continue your current coverage.
  5. Discounts for students. If you are a student, unmarried, under the age of 25 years, and you meet the grade requirements, you may get cheap auto insurance.
  6. Choosing a higher deductible. If you choose a higher deductable, your premium payment will be less, but you will have to pay more if you have an accident.
  7. Type of car. The type of vehicle you buy is a factor your insurance agent uses to determine your auto insurance premium rate. The quotes you get for an expensive car will be higher than for a more standard car. The age and size of your car also determines how high your premium is.
  8. Good credit history. Maintaining good credit history may also entitle you to certain discounts.
  9. Low mileage discounts. Some companies may also offer certain percentage of discounts to individuals who drive less than the average number of miles each year. If you are one of them, then you may also get this privilege.

Apart from the above, there are other ways to maximize your auto insurance benefits while minimizing costs. Learn more.

Will your premium go up after you file a claim?

Every insurer will increase the amount of your premium if you are involved in an accident. The increase is decided by the auto insurance company you purchased your policy from.

If you have a bad driving record, your motor insurance company may refuse to renew your policy and varies from one company to another. Accidents caused by drunk driving are more likely to result in a non-renewal of your policy.

If you decide not to inform your insurer about a minor accident, it may cause problems later. If you get sued by the other driver, your auto policy provider might not cover you because of the time lapse. Even if the claim is not refused, it will be harder to find evidence to support your case.

No one can predict when they will get into an accident. Investing in automobile insurance, protects you and your family during accidents and from losing your license for driving without insurance.

Starting a Child Care Business in California #it #for #small #business

Starting a Child Care Business in California

Starting a child care business in California involves a particular set of legal considerations that are specific both to the type of business and to the State of California. These include choosing the proper business entity, obtaining licenses and permits, dealing with health and safety, getting adequate insurance, and dealing with employees.

As we review some of these considerations, keep in mind that the terms daycare and child care are largely interchangeable in California; many of the state s laws, publications, and websites refer to child care rather than daycare.

To learn about other California business opportunities, see Nolo’s section on Starting a Business in California .

Choosing the Business Entity

While you could operate your daycare business as a sole proprietorship or partnership, you should consider using a legal form that protects you from personal liability, such as a limited liability company or corporation. A child care center may not be the most dangerous business, but you will be taking care of the most precious thing in the lives of your clients: their children. You will be responsible for the health and safety of those children, many of whom may be toddlers, for hours every day. There is always a possibility that a child could be injured while on the premises of your child care business in which case you would want the business, not you personally, to be responsible for any liability.

Licenses and Permits

In California, licensing of child care businesses is handled through the Child Care Licensing Division (CCLD) of the Department of Social Services (DSS). You need a license if you will be caring for children from more than one family that is not related to you. Operating without the required license can result in significant penalties.

One key distinction made by California s child care laws is between care provided in a person s home ( Family Day Care or Family Child Care ) and care provided at an independent facility ( Child Care Center ). The license and renewal fees are higher, and the regulations more extensive, for child care centers.

You will need to attend an orientation session before you can apply for a license for either a family child care (in-home) business or a child care center (separately located) business. To schedule an orientation, you should contact the nearest state licensing agency; a list of locations is available online. You will need to pay a nonrefundable fee for the orientation.

After you successfully complete the orientation, you will need to complete the license application. The application asks for a variety of information, including:

  • what ages of children you will be taking care of (infants, toddlers, pre-schoolers, school-age)
  • what capacity you are seeking for children in each age range
  • whether you own the property where the care will be provided
  • whether your business will be for-profit or nonprofit, and
  • acknowledgments regarding knowledge of, and compliance with, health and safety, criminal record, and other regulations

You also will have to pay a license application fee; this fee will vary depending on the number of children you will be caring for, but may run into the hundreds of dollars, with a similar amount due each subsequent year as a renewal fee.

More information on licensing is available at the CCLD s website .

Apart from state licensing, you should keep in mind that there may be local zoning laws that would prohibit running a child care business in a particular location. This is more likely to be an issue if you are thinking of operating the business out of your home and you live in a clearly residential, as opposed to commercial, area. Even if a child care center is permissible under the local zoning ordinance, you may be required to obtain a compliance certificate from the local zoning authority. In short, your best bet is to investigate zoning regulations before you open for business.

Health and Safety

The government is very concerned about the health and safety of infants and small children, and California s child care regulations are extensive. For example, one of the state s manuals of policies and procedures for home-based child care businesses is over 80 pages long; the manual for freestanding child care centers is much longer.

With some variation depending on whether you are operating out of your home or an independent child care center, key areas of state regulation include:

  • criminal record clearances, including checks related to child abuse
  • fire safety clearances
  • training requirements for center personnel
  • reporting requirements when children need medical treatment or there are other unusual incidents
  • ratio of staff to children
  • requirement that individual named licensee be present at the center
  • safety of toys and play areas
  • prohibition on smoking cigarettes
  • disaster evacuation planning
  • financial records requirements
  • specific teacher-to-children ratios for toddlers
  • transportation of children
  • food service requirements
  • napping
  • minimum required outdoor space
  • building fixtures and equipment
  • distinctions between infant care, toddler care, and school-age care, and
  • state inspection authority

As the last item on the list indicates, the state has the authority to inspect your operation. These inspections may be unannounced and may include interviews of children and staff. They may also include inspecting any part of the child care center, or those parts of a home in which child care services are provided. Similarly, you should expect that a fire marshal or other fire prevention official will make an inspection to ensure there are adequate routes of escape in case of fire.

The CCLD has published readable regulation highlights documents that provide more details on these matters for both freestanding child care centers and in-home family child care; the documents are available at the CCLD s website .

Tax Deduction

If you run your daycare business out of your home, you may be able to deduct expenses for the business. To qualify, you must (a) provide daycare to children, and (b) be licensed by the state or exempt from the state s licensing requirement. Details about how to figure the deduction can be found on IRS Publication 587, available at irs.gov .

Insurance

There are particular risks associated with operating a child care center, primarily those related to the health and safety of infants and small children. These are on top of more generic business risks such as fire, theft, or other sources of property damage or personal injury.

Try to work with an insurance agent who has previous experience writing policies for child care providers. Consider coverage for sexual abuse or molestation, for corporal punishment, and for employees who are child care providers. In general, make sure you have an excellent general liability policy.

Employees

Most daycare centers have employees and, in many cases, there can be relatively frequent turnover. You should inform yourself about basic employment law issues such as illegal discrimination, workers compensation, and how to handle the hiring process. With regard to hiring in particular, learn how to:

  • create a useful job application that does not include illegal questions
  • check references or make other preemployment inquiries — again without violating privacy laws or otherwise seeking illegal information, and
  • ask interview questions that are both useful and legally permissible.

Keep in mind that there are some employment laws that are specifically relevant to daycare workers, such as state training requirements and rules relating to criminal records. California requires the licensee of a home-based child care operation, and at least one on-duty staff member at a child care center, to be trained in pediatric CPR, first aid, and other health-related areas.

A good resource for general employment issues is The Employer s Legal Handbook , by Fred Steingold (Nolo). Also, many key employment laws are administered through the Department of Labor, and there are a variety of informative webpages within the Department of Labor website.

The SSAE 18 Reporting Standard SOC 1 SOC 2 SOC 3 Support and Guidance for SSAE18, SOC 1, SOC 2, and SOC 3 reporting standards

Some organizations have heard of SAS 70, SSAE 16. and soon to be SSAE 18. but, don t really know WHY they need to pay to have a bunch of auditors trounce through their company for a month or two during the year, especially right after their financial audit just finished.
The answer is simple: Many companies will not even think about using your company to perform services for them without a clean Type II Report in place.
Some benefits of having an SSAE 16 performed :

  • Ability to perform outsourcing services for Public Companies.
    • If performing financially significant duties for a Public Company, they are required to use a SSAE 16 qualified provider as it is the only way to give investors assurance over controls that are not performed by the Company in question.
  • Public and Private companies are more likely to trust your organization with their data.
    • If you were to trust a company with your data, you would want complete assurance it will be handled with the utmost care
  • A year round accessible knowledge source (your auditors).
    • As a service organization, large or small, you will always have questions regarding your business and having a set of auditors in place with access to a wide array of business knowledge, it will allow you to bounce your questions and concerns off of a group of trusted individuals.
  • A third party to review your controls and activities to ensure they are functioning appropriately, and give advice on how to improve upon them.
    • Sometimes your internal audit department is good, but, not always as stringent as they should be. This will help to serve as a check on their work, as well as your staff. Additionally, if there were any findings noted, your auditors are in a great position to give you some tricks and tips to improve to ensure everything functions well the following period.
  • Improving performance of the organization.
    • Just the knowledge that a review is being performed of an employee s work that can have far reaching consequences for the company as a whole. No more, Oh, I didn t realize that reviewing user access was THAT important to do this month, sorry , now, everyone knows that if it s not done, the success or failure of the organization could rest upon them.

Think of the SSAE 16 or SSAE-18 audit as an annual investment into your company, increasing potential new clients. productivity and accountability .

This tip is focused on designing controls that reflect the process being testing, if they don t, a headache of massive proportions will be created once testing begins.
What do you do to make sure you don t screw this up? Have as many meetings as it takes to get it right.
What you need to do is sit down with the auditors, the department lead, the main employees responsible for performing the process, and anyone else whom could either play a role in testing or modifying the control in the future. Once that is done, Management should discuss what they determined the control to be and how it should operate, that is then reviewed by the auditors, and then the employees performing the tasks should be reconsulted to verify that the control still reflects their process accurately.
Many times people try to speed this process up and half-ass it, leaving many open items which upon testing could easily blow up into a huge problem. When the control isn t 100% agreed upon prior to testing and a deviation is noted, it s a tough call between failing the control and the ability to adjust it to accurately reflect the process. The problem is modifying a control after testing has begun is not proper and needs to be avoided at all costs.
Locking the controls locked down early on could save weeks in wrapping up your new SSAE 16 Report.
We have seen issues like this cause delays in issuing of the report to the client and running additional fees, since adjusting controls isn t free. Coming from the perspective of the auditor, we can let you know the pitfalls, consequences and how to best navigate the audit process. If you have any comments or questions please leave them below!

A SOC 1 Report (System and Organization Controls Report ) is a report on Controls at a Service Organization which are relevant to user entities’ internal control over financial reporting. The SOC1 Report is what you would have previously considered to be the standard SAS70, complete with a Type I and Type II reports, but falls under the SSAE 16 guidance (and soon to be SSAE 18 ).

Please see the following articles discussing the SSAE 16 guidance and additional information related to the SOC 1 (Type I and Type II) Reports:

In addition to the SOC 1 report which is restricted to controls relevant to an audit of a user entity’s financial statements, the SOC 2 and SOC 3 reports have been created to address controls relevant to operations and compliance and will be discussed in further detail in the future.

Please see the SOC 1 Reporting Guide page for additional information.

SSAE 16 is an enhancement to the current standard for Reporting on Controls at a Service Organization, the SAS70. The changes made to the standard will bring your company, and the rest of the companies in the US, up to date with new international service organization reporting standards, the ISAE 3402. The adjustments made from SAS 70 to SSAE 16 will help you and your counterparts in the US compete on an international level; allowing companies around the world to give you their business with complete confidence .

SSAE16 is now effective as of June 15, 2011, and if you have not made the necessary adjustments required, now is the time to find a quality provider to discuss the proper steps. All organizations are now required to issue their Service Auditor Reports under the SSAE 16 standards in an SOC 1 Report.

The soon to be effective, SSAE-18. is expected to follow a similar reporting structure to the SSAE-16 within a SOC 1 report.

Who Needs an SSAE 16 (SOC 1 ) Audit?

If your Company (the Service Organization ) performs outsourced services that affect the financial statements of another Company (the User Organization ), you will more than likely be asked to provide an SSAE16 Type II Report, especially if the User Organization is publicly traded.
Some example industries include:

  • Payroll Processing
  • Loan Servicing
  • Data Center /Co-Location/Network Monitoring Services
  • Software as a Service (SaaS )
  • Medical Claims Processors

What you Need to Know:

Before starting the SSAE 16 process, there are a number of considerations one must take into account that can save considerable time, effort, and money in the long run. Use the following items as a mini checklist for yourself:

  • Does my Company need an SSAE16, or, are we doing it just because someone asked?
  • Reports on the low end can run at least $15,000 a year, will the business lost be less of a burden than the cost of the report itself?
  • Does your company have defined Business Process and IT controls in place, or, will you need assistance developing and implementing them (readiness assessment)?
  • Have you determined the controls in place which affect the outsourced services being provided?
  • Have key stakeholders been defined and included in discussions?

There are many other issues to consider before engaging a CPA firm to help with your SSAE 16, for a more detailed checklist please see The SSAE 16 Checklist

You may have heard SSAE-18 is on the horizon for reports issued as of May 1, 2017. There are some important updates discussed in here: SSAE-18 An Update to SSAE-16 .

As the standard is formalized and the date approaches we will continue to provide more information to help you prepare for these changes.

What is it like to have an abortion

What is it like to have an abortion

The following quotations are taken directly from medical and psychological studies on teen abortions.

What is it like to have an abortionAbout 20 per cent of all abortions taking place in the U.S. today are performed on teens. Teenage abortion has been linked to a number of physical and psychological problems, including drug and alcohol abuse, suicide attempts and suicidal ideation, and other self-destructive behaviors.

Complications

Types Of Physical Complications

The number and types of physical complications resulting from abortion are as diverse as the various abortion methods. Depending upon the type of abortion performed, physical complications can be as follows:

– Cervical tearing and laceration from the instruments.

– Perforation of the uterus by instruments. This may require major surgery, including hysterectomy.

– Scarring of the uterine lining by suction tubing, curettes, or other instruments.

– Infection, local and systemic.

– Hemorrhage and shock, especially if the uterine artery is torn.

– Anesthesia toxicity from both general or local anesthesia, resulting in possible convulsions, cardiorespiratory arrest, and in extreme cases, death.

– Retained tissue, indicated by cramping, heavy bleeding, and infection.

– Postabortal syndrome, referring to an enlarged, tender and soft uterus retaining blood clots.

– Failure to recognize an ectopic pregnancy. This could lead to the rupture of a fallopian tube, hemorrhage, and resulting infertility or death, if treatment is not provided in time.

Types Of Physical/Emotional Complications

Some women experience immediate psychological problems from abortion. Other women repress feelings of guilt, delaying emotional reactions sometimes for several years and oftentimes triggered by their first planned pregnancy.

What is it like to have an abortion

These complications include:

– Sudden and uncontrollable crying episodes.

– Deterioration of self-concept.

– Sleep, appetite and sexual disturbances.

– Disruption in interpersonal relationships.

– Extreme guilt and anxiety.

– Depression and thoughts of suicide.

New Studies Connecting Abortion To Broader Problems:

Suicide – Compared to pregnant women who had their babies, pregnant women who aborted were 6-7 times more likely to die of suicide.

D. C. Reardon et al, “Deaths Associated With Pregnancy Outcome: A Record Linkage Study of Low Income Women,” Southern Medical Journal 95(8):834-41, Aug. 2002

Substance Abuse – Women who abort are five times more likely to report subsequent drug or alcohol abuse than women who deliver.

American Journal of Drug and Alcohol Abuse, 2000

Among women who had unintended first pregnancies, those who had abortions were more likely to report, an average of four years later, more frequent and recent use of alcohol, marijuana, and cocaine than women who gave birth.

American Journal of Drug and Alcohol Abuse, 2004

Psychiatric Treatment – A review of the medical records of 56,741 California Medicaid patients revealed that women who had abortions were 160% more likely than delivering women to be hospitalized for psychiatric treatment in the first 90 days following abortion or delivery. Psychiatric treatment rates remained significantly higher for at least four years.

Canadian Medical Association Journal, 2003

In a study of U.S. and Russian women who had abortions, 65% of U.S. women experienced post-traumatic stress disorder, which they attributed to their abortions. 60% of the American women reported that they felt “part of me died” after their abortions.

V. M. Rue et al, “Induced Abortion and Traumatic Stress: A Preliminary Comparison of American and Russian Women,” Medical Science Monitor 10(10):SR5-16, 2004

Infertility and Life-Threatening Reproductive Risks – Abortion can damage reproductive organs and cause long-term and sometimes permanent problems that can put future pregnancies at risk. Women who have abortions are more likely to experience ectopic pregnancies, infertility, hysterectomies, stillbirths, miscarriages, and premature births than women who have not had abortions.

T. Strahan, Detrimental Effects of Abortion: An Annotated Bibliography with Commentary (Springfield, IL: Acorn Books, 2002, 168-206

Subsequent Children Negatively Affected – The children of women who have had abortions have less supportive home environments and more behavioral problems than the children of women without a history of abortion. This finding supports the view that abortion may negatively affect bonding with subsequent children, disturb mothering skills, and otherwise impact a woman’s psychological stability.

D. C. Reardon et al, “Psychiatric Admissions of Low-Income Women Following Abortions and Childbirth,” Canadian Medical Association Journal 168(10):May 13, 2003

One study found that women with a history of induced abortions were 144% more likely to physically abuse their children than women who had not had an abortion.

Priscilla K. Coleman et al, “Associations Between Voluntary and Involuntary Forms of Perintal Loss and Child Maltreatment Among Low Income Mothers,” Acta Paediatrica 94, 2005

Abortion is linked with increased violent behavior, alcohol and drug abuse, replacement pregnancies, depression, and poor maternal bonding with later children. These factors are closely associated with child abuse and would appear to confirm a link between unresolved post-abortion trauma and subsequent child abuse.

Teenager Dies After Taking Abortion Pill:

What is it like to have an abortionSan Francisco (AP)- Holly Marie Patterson went to a Planned Parenthood clinic to quietly consider ways to handle a life change she wasn’t ready for. One week later, the 18-year-old lay dying on an emergency room table, the victim of complications after she took the abortion pill.

Her death has already caused her grief-stricken father to hope that the tragedy will encourage other women considering abortion to seek support, especially from their families.

Holly Patterson, who lived in the San Francisco suburb of Livermore, visited a Planned Parenthood clinic Sept. 10 to take the pill. She followed the prescribed procedure for using RU-486, taking two more pills at home in the following days.

After experiencing bleeding and cramps so severe that she was unable to walk, her boyfriend rushed her to the hospital, where she was given painkillers and sent home. She was back in the hospital a few days later and died Sept. 17.

Monty Patterson said he learned from an attending physician at the hospital that she had died after a massive infection caused by fragments of the fetus left inside her uterus caused her to go into septic shock.

Compressors are the most expensive component in an A/c, but even still they are not that expensive. A 3-3 1/2 ton, 12 SEER compressor costs a repair person [who buys wholesale] about $350-$450 (typical 3 ton COPELAND compressor used by most AC units). You often replace the dryer on the unit too (the big round tube soldered in on the line), that’s another $50-$80, and usually the thing that causes your compressor to go bad is the condensor fan is not cooling the unit properly. that’s another $50 – $100.

The controller boards and caps usually aren’t replaced during a compressor replacement, but the sales person will talk you into it. Don’t do it until they can prove those components are bad.

I’m not an HVAC person but I have replaced my own compressor, fans, caps, etc. The compressor requires freon which means you’ll be REQUIRED to get a qualified HVAC guy to cycle your lines (3 times) after the compressor is installed.

Installing a compressor yourself:

Buy the same brand compressor, makes life a lot easier with the wiring and copper tube connections.

Use MAP gas and 50% silver solder, do not use flux. The soldering technique is the same for copper water pipes, no different.

Total cost to replacement pump, fan, and drier: $723. Average cost of a quote I received: $1900. THe unit cost $2600 and is 7 years old. Stupid, huh? If you want a higher SEER A/c, simple. SEER is rated at the PUMP, not the coil. so, install a better pump with a higher SEER! Ta-da.

Best tip anyone can give you when it comes to an A/c unit: Change your condensor fan every 5 years no matter what. They are cheap motors and take about 30 minute to install. You can also just take them apart and clean the insides. all of them are brushless, they tend to go bad because dust and grim get in them. 4 screws hold it together, remove them, pull the spindle out, wipe it off, put a little grease on it, put back together. you’re good for another 5 years. If you can pump gas in your car, you can replace the condenser motor AND replace the capacitors. they are, in reality, no brainers.

I have been in the industry for more than 15 years on the Gulf coast and i totally disagree. Not just anyone can replace a compressor. First how do you know it’s the compressor? Second, what caused the failure? Was it a burnout? Why would I need to know if it was a burnout? What must I do if it was a burnout? Not to mention the possibility of electrocuting yourself. Next you use 15% silver solder not 50%. What are the dangers of soldering? What happens with oil residue in the refrigerant lines? What happens when flame is introduced to freon and freon residue in the lines? Ever heard of phosgene gas? What about the Oxygen Depletion Potential of freon? You know suffocating? What about how inhaling freon causes heart arrhythmia? Frost bite? What about refrigerant recovery and disposal? What about evacuating the system? A/C systems, are very susceptible to moisture and other non condensibles. Next freon. What type? How are you going to purchase replacement freon with no EPA certification? What about the life threatening dangers of freon? How much freon do you add? You just can’t go by the factory charge on the nameplate. You have to take into account many factors and then calculate your super heat and subcooling in order to achieve a proper charge.
There are so many things to consider before trying to tackle something like this. If injury or death doesn’t deter you, then the fact that you did it yourself will probably void any warranty that come with your $1000 compressor should. I can look up how to do an appendectomy online and get step by step instructions but I’m pretty sure most people would agree to just get someone who has been properly schooled and trained to do it. This is not like changing a fuse or the oil in your car. You could die or even possibly kill someone else many different ways if you don’t know what you are doing and I would never recommend a compressor change out as a DIY project for a novice.

Actually a license is only required if your system uses R22 freon, which of course most old systems do. If you have or are replacing with system with a R410-A refrigerant, no license is required. So long as your not touching a R22 system, your fine. If your replacing a R22 system with a R410-A system you need a licensed HVAC contractor to recover the R22 refrigerant from the old system before removing it.

If you haven’t mastered the mysteries of the circuit broker or equipment disconnect, you probably shouldn’t be doing anything yourself.

Pretty much anything you touch now a days voids the warranty. I wouldn’t mass with the R22, but I wouldn’t let a little thing like voiding the warranty stop me from working on it.

8 Epic EHR implementations with the biggest price tags in 2015

Investments in EHR systems are undoubtedly costly, but some implementations appear to carry more costs than others.

Implementation costs vary system to system and hospital to hospital. Prices fluctuate based on what types of additional features and modules a hospital selects. And, according to a Politico report, some EHR vendors charge for additional service fees while others don’t. The Politico report indicates for Epic’s 2014 edition software, the Verona, Wis.-based EHR vendor charges a software licensing fee, implementation costs and annual maintenance costs while OpenVistA, developed by Carlsbad, Calif.-based Medsphere, for example, does not.

Even within the subsector of Epic implementations, costs fall across the board. For example, Duke University Health System, based in Durham, N.C. paid approximately $700 million for its Epic EHR (systemwide go-live in 2014) while Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, N.H. paid $80 million (go-live in 2011), according to a Forbes report.

John Halamka, MD, CIO of Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. said in the Politico report that hospitals selecting Epic’s platform are not just buying a product — they are buying a process. BIDMC does not operate on Epic’s EHR; rather, the hospital earlier this year forged a partnership with athenahealth, which included using the Watertown, Mass.-based vendor’s product.

“Epic is selling a methodology; often a lot of manual processes or heterogeneity and standardizing the work,” Dr. Halamka told Politico. “It’s not that they’re buying expensive software, they’re buying a lot of software.”

No matter where the prices come from, the cost of Epic installations are significant. Here are eight of the most costly Epic implementations reported within the past six months. These are working numbers, with some systems having allotted the indicated amounts to implementation projects and others that have already completed installations.

Partners HealthCare: $1.2 billion
Boston-based Partners HealthCare is one of more recent implementations, going live the first week of June to the tune of $1.2 billion. This is the health system’s biggest investment to date. The implementation process took approximately three years, and in that time, the initial price tag of $600 million doubled.

LehighValleyHealth Network: $200 million
LVHN started its switch to Epic’s platform in February 2015, but the full transition will take between four and six years. Harry Lukens, CIO of the Allentown, Pa.-based system, told The Morning Call the total investment dedicated to the installation includes software, hardware, data conversion and additional personnel.

Mayo Clinic: “Hundreds of millions”
In January 2015, Rochester, Minn.-based Mayo Clinic announced it selected Epic’s EHR and revenue cycle management platforms and planned to drop its Cerner and GE Healthcare contracts to do so. The value of the contract was not disclosed by the health system or the vendor, but stock analysts told The Kansas City Star it is worth “hundreds of millions of dollars over several years.” Additionally, the headline of the Star report reads “Cerner loses Mayo Clinic contract worth hundreds of millions of dollars to Epic,” indicating a ballpark estimate of the new contract’s value.

LaheyHospital Medical Center: $160 million
On March 28, 2015, the Burlington, Mass.-based hospital completed its two-year implementation of Epic’s EHR system. Two months later, Lahey Health said it was laying off 130 people at three hospitals to close the budget gap. In the six months ended March 31, the health system had lost $21 million, partly due to preparatory EHR implementation costs.

Lifespan: $100 million
Providence, R.I.-based Lifespan announced plans to implement Epic’s EHR in March 2013, and the health system went live April 2015. Lifespan initially projected the implementation to cost $90 million, but in a Rhode Island Public Radio report, John Murphy, MD, executive vice president of physician services, alluded to a total closer to $100 million.

Erlanger Health System: $97 million
Chattanooga, Tenn.-based Erlanger Health System signed a contract with Epic in May 2015 nearing $100 million. The health system will invest $91 million in capital expenses, but operating expenses will bring the total to $97 million over the next 10 years. Erlanger was deciding between Epic and Cerner’s platform and ultimately chose Epic because the bid was less expensive, CFO Britt Tabor told Times Free Press .

WheatonFranciscan Healthcare: $54 million
In January 2015, Glendale, Wis.-based Wheaton Franciscan Healthcare announced plans to implement Epic across its hospitals. The system’s affiliated medical group and physician offices have been using Epic’s EHR since September 2012, but providers across the system can only view patient records and not input information. The implementation will create one central EHR platform across the system. Go-lives will begin January 2016. The system expects a return on investment after four years of using the platform.

Saint Francis Medical Center: $43 million
The hospital in Cape Girardeau, Mo. contracted with Epic in February 2015 and expects to go live in July 2016. Saint Francis plans to connect and exchange records with other hospitals in the St. Louis area also using Epic’s system, including SSM Health and Mercy Health.

Worth noting
A handful of other hospitals and health systems reported signing contracts with Epic this year but did not disclose the costs of the IT projects. Some of these organizations include Arlington Heights, Ill.-based Northwest Community Healthcare, SSM Health St. Mary’s Hospital-Audrain in Mexico, Mo. Oklahoma State University Center for Health Sciences in Tulsa, San Diego-based Scripps Health and St. Louis-based BJC HealthCare.

Editor’s note: An earlier version of this article identified Saint Francis Medical Center as being located in Dexter, Mo. We have updated the article to include the correct location, and we apologize for the error.

ASK THE EXPERT: Does sunscreen become ineffective with age?

By Karen E. Burke, MD

Dr. Burke is a dermatologist in private practice in New York City.

Q: Does a sunscreen become ineffective with age? How long can I keep a sunscreen before I have to throw it out?

A: Expiration dates are often stamped on sunscreen containers to specify the time limit for a product s stability and efficacy. For optimal sun protection as well as texture, stability, and sterility, use the sunscreen prior to the date listed. If you can t find a date on a new tube or bottle, write the month and year you purchased it in permanent marker on the tube.

To test shelf life, manufacturers store a product at 40 C with 75 percent humidity; then at 40 C with 25 percent humidity; and then test it at 0, 1, 2, and 3 months. Stability for three months in these laboratory conditions is comparable to three years in normal ambient environments. So your sunscreen should be good for up to three years after purchase.

Of the 17 sunscreen ingredients approved in the U.S. 15 are organic, or chemical, sunscreens: They work by absorbing damaging ultraviolet radiation (UVR). These chemical sunscreens consist of innately unstable molecules, but in the past few years manufacturers have started adding stabilizers like octocrylene.

Zinc oxide and titanium dioxide are physical, inorganic sunscreens; they reflect and diffuse UVR. Both are photostable and do not change molecular structure when exposed to UVR. Physical sunscreens once had an opaque, paste-like consistency, but in the past two decades manufacturers have developed cosmetically elegant formulations using micronized (tiny) particles. Since micronized titanium dioxide and zinc oxide can clump together over time, often the particles are coated with dimethicone or silica to keep the ingredients stable and smooth. And in addition to active compounds, sunscreens usually contain preservatives, emulsifiers, fragrances, and other additives.

Sunscreens are tested in their actual containers, since plastics in the container may leach into the sunscreen and cause a chemical interaction. UVR changes the molecular structure of chemical sunscreens, so sunscreen containers should be opaque.

For best results, use your sunscreen before the stated expiration date, and store it in a cool place.

Is a Computer Science Degree Worth It?

Education may be “the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world,” in the wise words of Nelson Mandela. but is that true of education in all its forms?

That, indeed, has been the question of the day among Linux bloggers, who have recently been debating the value of the traditional computer science degree in particular.

“How worthwhile are Computer Science degrees?” asked the ever-contemplative team over at TuxRadar in an Open Ballot recently, thus kicking off the conversation.

“Many technology companies complain that graduates, even of Computer Science, arrive with little understanding of how to work in industry and often lack knowledge of basic coding paradigms,” they added. “This seems a great shame to us, especially when there’s so many high quality open source projects out there who’d love some students to help them out, and who they’d be happy to mentor in return.”

FOSS aficionados have had no shortage of opinions on the topic — at TuxRadar or beyond.

‘It’s a Trophy’

“I’ve been a developer for a few years and am completely self-taught,” wrote Johnny in the comments on TuxRadar, for example. “The majority of people who I have worked with in the industry were also self-taught.

“When we were hiring recently and had to do interviews, the candidates who had degrees were often not as good as those who had more real-world experience,” Johnny added.

Indeed, “it’s a trophy, good for display only, but not much good for anything else,” asserted Anonymous Penguin From The Kitchen. “Just like those ornamental swords hanging on the wall. Can’t beat the humble kitchen chopper that’s in daily use.”

‘I Don’t Think I Learnt Anything Crucial’

Then again: “When I came to choosing what degree course to apply for, I was pretty sure a Computer Science degree would probably consist of an awful lot of teaching that I didn’t require, since I’d already picked up quite a lot of knowledge by that point,” chimed in blogger Paul Gideon Dann.

“In the end, I decided to go for something a little off the beaten track, and chose a degree in Artificial Intelligence and Computer Science, which was 50% CS and 50% AI,” Dann added.

Even so, “all in all, I don’t think I learnt anything crucial at university,” Dann concluded.

‘A Degree Is Not Needed’

Similar opinions could be heard down at the Linux blogosphere’s Punchy Penguin Saloon.

“Most of the time a degree is not needed for even advanced programming tasks and never needed for systems admin work for the average, but a degree is needed to get past the less competent HR departments,” consultant and Slashdot blogger Gerhard Mack offered.

Of course, “I really question if anyone with actual skills would want to work in a place that knows so little about the IT industry,” he added.

“I have seen some specialized places that had a legitimate reason to need a degree, but those places are very high level work and I would only suggest a degree if you REALLY love programming and want to take it to a specialized level such as physics simulations, compression/encryption work, etc.,” Mack concluded.

‘One Path Among Many’

Similarly, “I have met excellent software engineers, programmers, and developers who had a CS degree and others who did not,” agreed Chris Travers, a Slashdot blogger who works on the LedgerSMB project.

By the same token, “I have met many mediocre developers who had a CS degree and many who did not,” Travers added.

“I suspect that in some areas of software development, a CS degree is extremely helpful, but I don’t think it is ever required,” he explained. “One thing the open source community is very good at doing is encouraging people to learn by both doing and by talking to those with a great deal of formal training or knowledge.”

Such transfers of knowledge “can be compared to apprenticeships in the old guild system,” he pointed out.

All in all, “I see a CS degree as one path among many,” Travers concluded. “However, one clear advantage it has is that it is meaningful to people who do not know our industry and yet are in charge of screening resumes.”

‘Good Advice for a Decade’

Blogger and educator Robert Pogson said he is “so old my academic career started before Computer Science took off at my university, otherwise I would likely have studied that instead of Physics,” he told Linux Girl.

“My love of all things computer started during first year university when I laid hold of a room-filling pocket calculator called the IBM 1620 which had blinking lights and a typewriter console,” he explained. “With it, I learned Fortran II and Assembler/machine language.

“Later, on the IBM System/360, I learned many different programming languages before I latched onto Pascal and Modula 2,” he added. “Those were some of the best years of my life, and computers have been important to me ever since.”

As a teacher, Pogson has often told his students that “if they were the least bit keen on maths and science, they should get into computer science or DNA tinkering,” he noted. “I think that has been good advice for a decade, and I don’t see any closing down of opportunities in those fields.”

‘Be ANYTHING But a Tech Guy’

Slashdot blogger hairyfeet wasn’t so sure.

Computer science degrees are valuable — “in Bangalore,” hairyfeet opined. “The guy in Bangalore with a half a dozen degrees only gets paid around $19k; you REALLY think you can compete with that?”

Until the U.S. government “does something about offshoring and H1-Bs, you’ll continue to see what happened to the blue collar workers happen to the IT guys,” hairyfeet predicted. “I’m personally tired of hearing of guys that had to train the H1-B that would replace them, or seeing ads in the paper that are so obviously written following the ‘How NOT to hire an American’ playbook.”

Hairyfeet has also advised his oldest son to “be ANYTHING but a tech guy,” he added. “Programmers will be joining autoworkers and machinists on the bread lines. Their degrees cost less than $5k, yours cost over $50k; they can live well on 15K a year, you can’t even pay your student loans.

“It’s simple economics, folks — survival of the greediest — and nobody makes ‘greedy’ like a U.S. corporate head,” he concluded.

‘An Education-Loan Bubble’

Ultimately, “the real concern is. a blohow valuable is ANY degree in the current circumstances?” opined Barbara Hudsongger on Slashdot who goes by “Tom” on the site.

“We’re in an education-loan bubble, similar to the mortgage-loan bubble that imploded a few years ago,” Hudson explained. “Students today are frequently taking on 6-figure debts for a degree that in many cases will never earn back the extra cost, will be out of date before they graduate, and will be irrelevant to their careers several years down the road.

“I only know one person who is using their degree in their original field of study,” she added. “For everyone else, it’s been a case of ‘stuff happens.'”

In short, “the sad fact is that times have changed,” Hudson concluded. “The ‘second IT bubble’ is tailing off. You’ll make more money and have better job security as a cop or firefighter — those jobs can’t be outsourced to the third world, and you have a union to negotiate better working conditions, benefits and wages.”

Katherine Noyes has been writing from behind Linux Girl’s cape since late 2007, but she knows how to be a reporter in real life, too. She’s particularly interested in space, science, open source software and geeky things in general. You can also find her on Twitter .

How Much Does It Cost To Paint a Car

Whether you just got yourself a second hand car of you have been involved in an auto accident, you may be asking yourself the question how much does it cost to paint a car .

There are many factors to be considered in determining the costs of painting a car. The most significant considerations include quality of materials, level of labor involved, and size of car.

To help you figure out how much painting a car costs, consider the following:

The Car Painting Process

Depending on the quality of work done, the processes will generally start with the washing of the car. This will remove dust particles, mud, and any other foreign bodies from the surface of the car and make it easier to paint.

The original paint will then be sanded down and the garage may repair some of the uneven surfaces and scratches.

After that, the chromes and windows will be covered up or if it is a high end job they may be completely removed.

Once the preparation for painting the car is completed, the colorless primers will be applied to make the paint last longer. It is then that the application of paint will commence using spray guns. This will be followed by the application of a protective cover which is normally transparent.

Some of the cheaper places will not follow all these steps and some of the high end specialty shops will do much more.

Cost of Materials

There are different materials and equipment used in painting a car. The primary cost to focus on is the cost of car paint, the cost of the primer, and the cost of the clear coatings. These can set you back from about $200 for the cheapest quality to over $5,000 for top shelf products.

However, the average costs range at between $1,000 and $1,500 for a decent job .

Different cars require different types of paint and this is also affected by the metallic qualities of the car, type of finish, shades, and patterns.

Depending on your needs and your budget, you may have to use one of the following most commonly used types of car paint.

Enamel Paint

Enamel paints are tougher than lacquer paints because of how they dry into a hard shell though they are not as easy to apply. Many enamel colors tend to require a two-stage process where a clear top coat is applied in addition to the paint.

Nevertheless, there are some enamel paints that only require a single step. Typical prices for a gallon of enamel auto paints are around $50 .

Acrylic Lacquer

Perhaps the cheapest option you will have is the acrylic lacquer auto paints. It is easy to apply though it chips easier.

You may have to apply regular coats due to the chipping and because they are not chemical resistant. They cost between $30 and $40 per gallon.

Urethane-Based Paints

Urethane-based paints have qualities that fall between enamel and acrylic lacquer paints. They are easy to apply and are as strong as enamel paints.

Nevertheless, urethane-based paints have to be used with three other products for a complete finish. These are a reducer, a catalyst, and the color. They cost between $70 and $90 per gallon.

Water-Based Paints

Water-based paints are relatively new in the market though gaining a lot of popularity. They are the most versatile auto paints as they can be used on the existing paintwork, on metal, and on primer.

However, there are not many color choices yet and they are more expensive at around $120 per gallon .

Labor Costs

You can get a garage that charges $300 or less on labor for painting a car.

However, the paintwork will most likely be sloppy and uneven, and preparation will be nonexistent.

For a decent job, most mid range garages will charge between $1,500 and $3,000 for labor. The labor costs are also determined by quality of work, level of preparation, the need for body work, and size of car.

Total Costs

The total costs for painting a car will be determined by cost of labor and materials. It may range from just a few hundreds to many tens of thousands.

Low-End Prices

There are various national chains that offer prices as low as $200 for painting a regular-sized vehicle.

Typical service involves cleaning the surface of the car to remove dirt and old paint, masking some areas to reduce chances of overspray, and providing a heat-cured finish. They typically offer a one year warranty.

Mid Range Prices

Using better materials and more involved preparation and finishing, a mid range car paint may cost anywhere between $1,000 and $5,000 .

It may also involve interior painting and areas near the engine getting re-colored. Typical warranties range from 2 to 5 years though may be more.

High End Prices

High end car paint jobs cost between $4,000 and $10,000 though they may even go up to $80,000 for highly specialized services.

Paints used in this kind of services sell for even hundreds of dollars for one quart.

The preparation in these kinds of jobs involves complete removal of windows, mirrors, headlights, and bumpers before sanding begins.

Buffing and wet-sanding is also done after the paintwork is complete. High end jobs usually come with a lifetime guarantee.

Do-It-Yourself Costs

You can significantly cut down the costs of painting your car by doing it yourself. But you should know that the work is involving, may take very long, and will require a substantial investment in equipment.

For instance, you will need to purchase spray guns which do cost between $200 and $800. Sanding materials will also cost you another $50 to $200 .

The good thing is that you get to choose your material and so you can decide to reduce your carbon footprint and use more environmental-friendly products.

Accenture and BMC Software Expand Relationship with Technology Services and Joint Development and Delivery Agreements

NEW YORK and HOUSTON; Nov. 16, 2010 Accenture (NYSE: ACN) and BMC Software (NASDAQ:BMC) have expanded their long-standing relationship with two technology agreements, one for the joint development and implementation of BMC Business Service Management (BSM) solutions and another for the provision of consulting and integration services to BMC s Professional Services organization.

Under the first agreement, the two companies will jointly develop, market and implement packaged and custom BSM solutions. BSM provides businesses with a single, integrated IT automation and management platform. Adopting this platform approach enables customers to extract maximum return on their IT investments, while also leveraging key new technologies such as virtualization, cloud computing, and software-as-a-service (SaaS).

Accenture and BMC will focus initially on an integrated IT service management solution (ITSM) based on BMC Atrium Configuration Management Database, BMC Remedy IT Service Management Suite, and Accenture technology consulting services. The combined offerings will provide companies with an integrated IT automation and management platform that allows them to see how their IT systems are performing while also allowing them to lower their costs and accelerate business growth.

Under the second agreement, BMC will leverage Accenture technology professionals to increase the capacity of its delivery and implementation capabilities with a dedicated Accenture team providing consulting and integration services to BMC s Professional Services organization. The new team will help implement business service management solutions for BMC and its clients.

BMC s business service management offerings aim to help IT organizations deliver services more efficiently, reduce costs and improve application performance,” said Mary Johnston Turner, IDC Enterprise Systems management research director. “IDC is seeing increasing demand for data center automation, capacity planning and analytic tools to help IT organizations streamline operations and cope with the operational complexity caused by virtualization and cloud computing. The extended relationship between Accenture and BMC directly targets these challenges.”

Many major analyst firms estimate that the global market opportunity for all elements of BSM to exceed US$15 billion.

Many of our clients are challenged by the increasing complexity of IT and the business services that IT supports, said Rockwell Bonecutter, senior executive and Global Lead for Accenture Alliance Channel Management. Governance and compliance requirements are escalating rapidly, and the demand for an integrated view of business process management has never been greater. This expanded relationship combines the power of BMC Software s solutions with Accenture s proven expertise in technology consulting services and represents a big opportunity for both companies to deliver even more value to our clients.

John McMahon, BMC s senior vice president for worldwide sales and services, said: To meet their financial, service delivery, governance and compliance mandates, IT organizations must see and control all parts of their infrastructure through a single, integrated management platform. BMC s Business Service Management software provides that platform. Designed to leverage BMC s next generation IT management technology and Accenture s services, this new team will enable customers to accelerate their BSM implementations and increase their return on investment.

Accenture is a global management consulting, technology services and outsourcing company, with approximately 204,000 people serving clients in more than 120 countries. Combining unparalleled experience, comprehensive capabilities across all industries and business functions, and extensive research on the world s most successful companies, Accenture collaborates with clients to help them become high-performance businesses and governments. IT Helpdesk Support

Radius Technologies provide a range of IT support and helpdesk services. Our maintenance and service contracts can be tailored to meet customer specific requirements.

The Radius helpdesk is staffed by full time dedicated helpdesk engineers. The support levels include telephone assistance, remote dial in and on-site assistance. We operate a fully open helpdesk system, whereby all contract holders can log on and review calls via our on-line call management systems.

This system provides for 100% transparency and traceability, where all calls, time details, as well as resolution are securely available online. The online portal also allows customers to log on and escalate their own calls and also manage calls on behalf of their other offices and system users.

This contract type is used by companies that have very little IT support requirements or where they require advanced technical expertise coupled with full help-desk services backed up by guaranteed service level for on-site support. Unlimited remote and telephone assistance are covered in the contract cost. However, on-site work will incur an additional charge.

This is similar to the retainer contract. However, this contract also includes unlimited on-site break fix time. Standard contract costs are based on the number of PC s and servers being supported. Standard contracts are designed for companies that want to know in advance what their annual IT support budget is going to be. This contract can be paid monthly by direct debit, if required.

Pro-active contract calls are normally taken out in conjunction with a standard contract where the company wishes to have a fixed annual cost for IT services and also wants Radius to provide ongoing maintenance on their servers and PC s. This would involve applying security patches, cross checking internet usage logs, updating anti-virus software, performing printer maintenance, etc. These calls can also be used to carry out system changes and re-configurations that the customer queues up. This contract is pro-active, where Radius manages the sites, servers, backups, email, web usage and security. We become the company s IT department and report to management on budget, system usage and system recommendations as well as best practice.

Time Block Contract

This type of contract is suitable for any company looking for occasional IT support and want to draw down support hours as required. The minimum time block contract is 5 hours with hourly rates reducing on a sliding scale. Our web based ticketing system displays remaining hours outstanding and also breaks down hours used to date, including a detailed description of call activity, escalation and technical resolutions.

Remote monitoring is a service where software is installed on the customer s server and/or systems. The system is monitored 24x7x365. The software automatically interfaces with our online call management software and auto generates service tickets when required based on pre-defined error handling criteria. Remote monitoring is priced on a per unit basis and works on a sliding scale based on the number of servers/systems being monitored. Remote monitoring services can be provided alone or in conjunction with any of our contracts. Prices start from as little as 65 cent per day.

Note: We also provide server and comms only contracts.

Real-time feedback to ensure note quality and completeness

This Computer-Assisted Physician Documentation (CAPD) application is a seamless extension of your existing Dragon Medical One workflow, using algorithms to learn distinctive patterns, and facts and evidence to ask physicians the right question at the right time.

Once enabled, Dragon Medical Advisor analyzes notes in real time and suggests ways to make narratives stronger and more specific—for a more accurate reflection of patient conditions, diseases and resources used. It even prompts for patient safety indicators and increases diagnostic specificity to support accurate coding and outpatient risk-adjusted payment models. Use it to justify medical necessity decisions, accelerate billing, support better patient care and improve ICD-10 coding compliance and quality.

CAPD embedded in the EHR

Real-time CAPD directly within the EHR

Value-based care demands that physicians document details, complications and comorbidities to capture the true severity and acuity of each patient. To help address gaps in clinical information immediately, embedded Computer-Assisted Physician Documentation (CAPD) analyzes all notes from a patient encounter and offers real-time clinical guidance to ensure the documentation is more reflective of each patient’s condition.

By improving communication between caregivers earlier in the patient’s stay, CAPD can impact treatment decisions and care—ultimately driving better quality outcomes, reporting and appropriate reimbursement. CAPD is optimized to work with your clinicians’ preferred EHR workflows, like Cerner Document Quality Review (DQR) and Epic NoteReader CDI .

Fact Extraction embedded in the EHR

Rich, complete, structured data from physician narratives

Convert physician narratives to discrete, actionable and accurate information for real-time decision-making. Embedded Fact Extraction adds codifiable data—problems, procedures, medications, allergies, vitals and social history—to the patient chart to support regulatory, compliance and quality reporting initiatives. Embedded Fact Extraction is integrated into solutions like Epic NoteReader and MEDITECH NLP Fact Finder .

CACDI

Automated advisor for your CDS teams

Nuance Computer-Assisted Clinical Documentation Improvement (CACDI) reads and analyzes all patient documents and EHR data in real time—scanning narrative documents for evidence of documentation improvement opportunities like clinical indicators, risk factors and treatment regimens. Using AI, the solution automates the most frequently used and highest value clinical strategies from Nuance’s 750+ proven clinical strategies. When evidence for a clarification is met, a clarification is generated and presented to Clinical Documentation Specialists (CDS) directly in their workflow for further review and consideration. All evidence is clearly highlighted and available to CDSs to review before they send the clarification on to the physician. This assistive technology helps CDSs organize and prioritize their workflow as well as expand their case coverage and productivity.

PowerScribe 360 Quality Guidance

Real-time quality guidance assistance for radiologists

With evidence-based clinical guidelines at the point of documentation, radiologists save valuable time searching for information to complete reports. In fact, real-time access to clinical guidelines improves radiology compliance from 45% to 95%. Powered by Clinical Language Understanding, PowerScribe 360 Quality Guidance from Nuance provides more consistent follow-up recommendations, helps reduce risk and improves patient outcomes. Integrated access to the ACR’s Recommendations for Incidental Findings and other societies are at the radiologist’s fingertips.

In their own words: What customers are saying

We took a look at the bigger picture of voice recognition technologies and discovered how evidence-based guidelines and new therapies are exploding in this space, and we found that only Nuance is on the leading edge of this trend toward higher-order voice recognition solutions.

Brian Lancaster, Executive Director of Information Management

As much as fracking has revolutionized and disrupted the petroleum industry by unlocking untapped resources, CAPD, NLP, AI and machine learning will do the same with medical data.

Dr. John S. Lee, MD, CMIO

We have to return the physicians, the providers to the job of providing care. The technology should serve that. There are many ways where the physician could be augmented by computer technology, robotic technology and virtual technology. That should enhance the experience for the doctor and the patient.

Dr. David Ting, Associate Medical Director/Information Systems

We had a good CDI program, but Nuance CAPD has made our program even better.

    Case Study Program

Here are all the key documents you need to get involved in one of the most exciting initiatives we have undertaken in recent years – the JMIC Event Case Study Program. This program has been developed in order to identify and profile events that demonstrate the kinds of broader output values associated with meetings, conventions or exhibitions thinks like economic, business, professional, academic and community benefits that such events create.

In participating in this program you will not only be helping generate important documentation that will benefit the industry as a whole but getting important profile for both your own organization and those whose events are profiled.

This program is being coordinated by the University of Technology Sydney (UTS), who have considerable experience in quantifying these kinds of values, in consultation with the members of the Academic Panel that has been assembled to support the program. As described in these materials, in order to qualify for inclusion in the study, these values may be of any type but must have been (or about to be) actually measured by the organizer and / or their partners in event delivery.

The documents we have attached here include:

As per the above, the event you nominate may have already taken place or yet to take place; in either case UTS will be able to supply assistance in terms of how outputs can best be measured in ways that will enable the event to qualify for consideration.

The application form is simple and clear, with the idea that any applicant can easily supply the information that will enable UTS to see how they can be of assistance. If there are any questions of detail, these will be answered quickly by UTS based on their own experiences in calculating these kinds of event benefits.

The results of this program will benefit the meetings industry in terms of being able to demonstrate the broader values of what we do as an industry so let s get started and start illustrating the value we bring to both the global economy and our own communities!

    FAQ – Before Treatment

    Frequently asked questions – Beforehand

Will I be suitable for vision correction?

If you know your prescription, then you could use our free online vision correction suitability checker, which is designed to act as a guide for you. The only way to know for sure and to find the best eye surgery treatment for you is to attend a free consultation.

We have vision correction solutions for long-sight, short-sight, astigmatism, presbyopia (the age related need for reading glasses) and those with strong prescriptions.

Why do I need a consultation?

There are many factors that need to be considered when assessing your suitability for treatment, including your prescription and the health of your eyes, which are measured in great detail during your consultation. It is also your opportunity to find out answers to any questions you might have and ensure you fully understand the benefits and risks of vision correction treatment.

During your free eye surgery consultation, you will meet with your personal advisor who will answer any questions you might have throughout the consultation. Our specialist vision correction optometrists perform several tests on your eyes, producing electronic maps which precisely show the contours and irregularities on the outer surface.

You are then advised on your suitability for vision correction, and we will recommend which treatment will give you the best result.

Is there a waiting list for consultations?

We always do our best to fit you in as soon as possible at one of our vision correction clinics at a time and date to suit you.

We aim to offer you a consultation within a week of you contacting us, however sometimes we are busier than usual.

How long after the consultation can I have treatment?

You could have your treatment from 48 hours after your eye surgery consultation. The reason for this is that we believe you need time to digest all the information you will receive at your consultation to make an informed decision about your treatment.

When can I get it done?

Once you make the decision to go ahead with treatment, we can look for a treatment date and time that will suit you.

You can have vision correction treatment from 48 hours after your free eye surgery consultation.

What do I do next to get started?

Book a date to come and see us for consultation. It s free, and there is no pressure and no obligation. Call one of our advisors on 0800 9888 237 .

Can I talk to someone who has been treated?

    Of course you can.

Simply call 0800 9888 237 and we will put you in touch with someone who has had laser eye surgery like yours, and who is enjoying life without contact lenses or glasses.

Alternatively, you can: Read comments from thousands of our other happy eye surgery customers.

Where can I go to have it done?

You can book your free eye surgery consultation at any of our clinics located throughout the UK We have 2 state-of-the-art IOL surgery facilities in London and Liverpool.

How long will I need to take off work?

Your consultation can take up to 2 hours so that we re able to accurately map and measure your eyes and make a recommendation to you about treatment based on the unique characteristics of your eyes. You can return to work after this, but you are unable to drive as we often need to use drops to dilate your pupils and this can make your vision blurry and slightly more light sensitive.

After your treatment, the time we recommend you take off depends upon your eye surgery treatment and your own recovery rate, but as a guide allow at least 24-48 hours, and it could be up to a week. This will be discussed with you at your free consultation.

Each aftercare appointment can take up to 15 minutes and depending on your treatment, there are 4-5 recommended aftercare appointments.

How soon can I be back on my PC/iPhone/iPad?

This depends on your eye surgery treatment and your own recovery rate, but allow at least 24-48 hours, and it could be up to a week. If you must use your PC, then remember to blink frequently and use the drops we provide.

Do the services (fire, police, armed forces etc.) recognise laser eye treatment?

The police will generally accept applications from people who have undergone laser eye surgery treatment after the elapse of 6-10 weeks, and provided there are no residual side-effects and other eyesight standards are met.

Laser eye surgery treatments are generally acceptable for current employees, but check with your superior beforehand.

Some fire brigades will make allowances for those with laser vision correction. In most cases, you will have to wait 6 months post-treatment before applying. Check with your local brigade. Laser eye surgery treatments are generally acceptable for current employees, but check with your superior beforehand.

Military policy states that while laser eye procedures are not generally prohibited among serving personnel or new recruits, there are rules covering its use. Please discuss your eye surgery with your superior.

I drive for a living, how long before I can get behind a wheel?

Everybody s eyes are different, though most are suitable for vision correction treatment. The length of time will be confirmed at your aftercare treatment based on the speed of your progress, although it is typically around 2 days, and 1-2 weeks for Intraocular Lenses (IOL).

    Can I fly after treatment?

We would recommend not flying for 1 week after your eye surgery treatment. This is due to the dry atmosphere inside an aeroplane. Please also bear in mind that we will schedule your aftercare appointments for 1 week and 1 month after treatment and we recommend that you attend these appointments.

I am a commercial pilot. Can I have laser eye surgery?

Yes you can, but be aware that the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) does not recommend laser eye treatments for pilots if the visual standards required for certification are to be met.

However, if you intend to go ahead, then there are stipulations, which it is best to understand by direct application to them.

I have always had good vision, but now I ve reached the age where I need reading glasses. Can laser eye surgery help?

Laser eye surgery itself cannot prevent or delay the onset of presbyopia, the age-related need for reading glasses that affects most of us as we reach our mid-forties. However, help is at hand – we offer a range of treatments designed to address the effects of presbyopia.

I ve been refused laser eye surgery in the past owing to the strength of my prescription. Have techniques moved on?

They have, and it is possible that you may be suitable for laser eye surgery now, however if you are not, we may be able to help with an advanced treatment called IOL (Intra Ocular Lens). With our range of eye surgery treatments, Ultralase is now able to correct the vision of around 90% of people in the UK, including many people found unsuitable in the past.

I have a really strong prescription. Can you help?

It is possible that we will be able to help with IOL (Intra Ocular Lens) treatment. With our range of treatments, Ultralase laser eye clinics are now able to correct the vision of around 90% of people we see for consultation.

Is there an upper or lower age limit for laser eye surgery?

Peoples prescriptions have usually stabilised by the age of 21 when the eye has completed its normal growth. However, vision correction may be an option from the age of 18, provided that the eyesight prescription has been stable for a minimum of 2 years. There is no upper age limit. However, please see the information about cataracts .

Can laser eye surgery cure cataracts?

People often start to develop cataracts when in their 60 s and 70 s, though this can vary. Laser eye surgery cannot cure this condition, however we do offer specific treatments for cataracts, which you can read more about here .

Is laser eye surgery available on the NHS or covered by private health insurance?

The Department of Health has stated that there are neither plans nor the resources to make laser eye surgery available on the NHS. It is also unlikely that those with private health insurance can reclaim their fees.

Should I bring someone with me?

We recommend that you do. Many people say that it s helpful for a friend or partner to attend with them as it may be that they have questions of their own to ask. In addition, during your consultation we may use eye drops to dilate your pupils, which can cause your vision to become blurred for a few hours afterwards and so a friend of partner can accompany you home. You will not be able to drive yourself home.

How long does an eye surgery consultation take?

Your free eye surgery consultation will last around 2 hours. This is so that we re able to accurately map and measure your eyes and make a recommendation to you about treatment based on their unique characteristics.

    private cloud project

    Related Terms

Companies initiate private cloud projects to enable their IT infrastructure to become more capable of quickly adapting to continually evolving business needs and requirements. Private cloud projects can also be connected to public clouds to create hybrid clouds .

Unlike a public cloud, a private cloud project remains within the corporate firewall and under the control on the company s IT department. As a result, a private cloud provides more control over the company s data, and it ensures security — albeit with greater potential risk for data loss due to natural disaster.

Launching a private cloud project involves analyzing the need for a private cloud, formulating a plan for how to create a private cloud, developing cloud policies for access and security, deploying and testing the private cloud infrastructure, and training employees and partners on the cloud computing project.

    Private Cloud Project Strategy

To create a private cloud project strategy, a company will first need to identify which of its business practices can be made more efficient than before, as well as which repetitive manual tasks can be automated via the successful launch of a cloud computing project.

By creating a private cloud strategy, the resulting cloud will be able to deliver automatic, scalable server virtualization, providing the benefits of automated provision of resources and the optimal use of hardware within the IT infrastructure.

    Building a Private Cloud

With the idea of building a private cloud a daunting proposition for many companies, the best advice for how to build a private cloud is to start small and then continue to grow the cloud computing project over time.

In terms of specifics for how to set up a private cloud, a company needs to:

    • Research the need and benefits for building a private cloud, particularly in respect to selecting a public or hybrid cloud instead of a private cloud
    • Analyze and ensure the proper processes and policies are in place to successfully build a secure private cloud
    • Research and acquire the private cloud infrastructure and cloud-enabling software that will be used, such as OpenStack. CloudStack. Eucalyptus. etc.
    • Ensure the hypervisor (s) that will manage the virtual machines and virtualized storage are available or can be purchased and installed
    • Develop and test the private cloud project in a non mission-critical environment
    • Train IT staff on how to manage the private cloud and employees and partners on how to access and use the cloud

Logos of the Largest 100 Companies in the World

    About this collection

The largest 100 companies in the world possess some of the most recognizable and distinctive logos around. These companies have built some of the foundations around which we live our lives: retail, automotive, financial services, telecommunications and energy, the staples of our daily lives. They employ millions of people around the globe and are used by millions every day. Whether we consciously acknowledge it or not, they continually build their brand through their advertisements and campaigns and reinforce the power of their logo on us as consumers.

Gathered here are the logos of the top 100 largest companies and corporations in the world (using data from Statista ). From the plain and simple logos like Berkshire Hathaway, Panasonic, and Sony, to the more colorful and playful logos of ArcelorMittal and Suez, they represent billions of dollars in annual revenues.

You will notice the dominant use of reds, blues and oranges throughout their designs, aimed at reinforcing trust, excitement and energy in the minds of consumers. Since many of these companies are huge conglomerates with many subsidiaries in different industries, you may also notice that many have a more generic or broad appeal and are somewhat ambiguous in their nature. When dealing with multiple products that you wish to brand under one name, it allows flexibility and freedom when you do not put yourself in a corner with a logo design that conveys only one aspect of a company. Nearly every one of the companies below could potentially be used in an industry that has nothing to do with their current operations, allowing them to merge, acquire and grow business without the need to rebrand their core company.

Please note: Since posting this, I receive quite a few inquiries for logo design – however, I’m not a graphics guy or logo designer. If you need a logo I would suggest checking out GraphicRiver’s Logo Templates section .

For your enjoyment, here are the logos of the largest companies on Earth.

    ABC News

Federal prosecutors are looking into the booming business of subprime auto loans. The investigation raises questions about whether GM and other firms have been selling questionable auto-loan investments to investors. The recent rise in auto sales has been fueled largely by consumer lending. Subprime loans are often made to borrowers who have poor credit histories. GM Finance says it has received a subpoena from the Department of Justice for documents related to subprime auto loans made since 2007. The Justice Department is said to be considering a civil lawsuit for potential violations of the Financial Institutions Reform, Recovery and Enforcement Act, a federal law that was passed following the savings and loan crisis in the 1980s.

General Motors says it has made progress in fixing its recall website so that it correctly lists all the cars that need repairs. The company says it expects the site to be fully corrected this week. The government had said Friday that GM’s vehicle identification number look-up system has been incorrectly telling some owners that their cars aren’t being recalled. That happened when the cars’ parts weren’t available. But the government says all recalls should be listed.

Gannett is spinning off its publishing business from its broadcasting and digital operations. The company is also acquiring full ownership of Cars.com for $1.8 billion. The decision follows moves by Tribune, Time Warner and Rupert Murdoch’s News Corp in breaking off print media from their rapidly expanding broadcast operations. Gannett says the publishing business will basically be debt free once spun off, with the broadcasting and digital businesses holding the existing debt.

Sand is the new gold. Prices are going up as mining companies increase fracking at oil and natural gas sites. “Sand is a key ingredient in items from solar panels to smartphones, but in recent years billions of pounds of it have been poured down wells to help coax more fuel out of the ground,” The Wall Street Journal says. During the fracking process, sand is mixed with water and chemicals. “Frackers are expected to use nearly 95 billion pounds of sand this year, up nearly 30% from 2013 and up 50% from forecasts made by energy-consulting firm PacWest Consulting Partners a year ago,” the Journal reports.

Standard & Poor’s rating agency says the rising wealth gap in the United States is complicating the rebound from the recession, and raising the risk of boom-and-bust cycles. S

    Things You’ll Need

Before changing the oil, drive the car for approximately one mile to warm up the engine. Position two auto ramps in front of each of the car’s front tires. Slowly drive the car forward until its front wheels rest securely on top of the ramps. Set the parking brake. Remove the oil filler cap from the top of the engine head. Locate the drain plug underneath the car. The drain plug is the large plug or nut underneath the oil pan. Loosen the drain plug with a wrench. Position a container to catch the old oil underneath the drain plug and remove the plug by hand. Allow the oil to drain into the container for approximately 20 to 30 minutes.

Grip the oil filter tightly with an oil filter wrench and turn it counterclockwise. Remove the filter and hold it upside down to keep from spilling oil. Empty the filter and wrap it in newspaper. Wipe the filter holder with a cloth to remove any debris. Tighten the new oil filter in place by hand, followed by a 3/4 turn with the oil filter wrench. Screw the oil drain plug into place, tightening the plug with a wrench. Remove the oil container. Back the car off the auto ramps. Add oil, following the vehicle’s instruction manual on the amount and type of oil needed. Replace the oil filler cap and turn on the car for 60 seconds. Turn off the car and check the oil dipstick. Add more oil, as needed.

If the coolant level is low, check the hoses from the radiator for any leaks. Also check for loose hose clips. Dilute antifreeze with water, if the antifreeze is not already pre-diluted. Fill the expansion bottle near the radiator with the proper level of antifreeze, as marked on the side of the bottle (approximately 1/3 full). Tightly seal the cap on the expansion bottle.

If you have a flat tire, position the car on a firm surface and apply the parking brake. Remove the rim cover and loosen the tire screws with a lug wrench. Do not fully unscrew the tire screws. Place a car jack beneath the car, in a secure spot near the flat. Raise the car. Finish loosening and then remove the tire screws with a lug wrench. Remove the old tire and install the replacement tire. Hand-tighten the screws on the tire, and then lightly tighten them with a lug wrench. Lower the car and tighten the tire screws completely with a lug wrench.

    Consulting Industry Market Research

    Consulting OVERVIEW

Global consulting industry revenues (including HR, IT, strategy, operations, management and business advisory services) will be about $488 billion in 2017, according to Plunkett Research estimates.
This represents reasonable growth from $470 billion during the previous year.
In the U.S. consulting of all types, including management, scientific and technical, generated $254.8 billion during 2016, up from $242.1 billion the previous year.
Accounting and related services (such as tax return preparation) generated an additional $171.2 billion in 2016, up from about $156.0 billion during 2015, according to the U.S.
    Bureau of the Census.
In recent years, corporate profits in general have grown dramatically, meaning that executives are reasonably willing to authorize new consulting projects, as long as they see the potential for a good return on the cost.
For example, India s leading consultancies have recently enjoyed substantial growth in employee count and revenues, as have most of the global consulting firms based in the U.S.
    and EU.
While corporate profits have been growing, government budgets in the U.S.
and much of Europe have been under tremendous pressure at the national, state and local levels.
While recent years have seen a general rebound in state and local tax collections, sharp increases in government employee pension and health care costs are having a devastating effect on finances.
Spending and debt have been called in question, and in some cases curtailed.

Plunkett’s entertaining writing style combined with his excellent documentation challenges readers to think carefully about the evolutionary changes that he suggests will be the building blocks of the coming socioeconomi.

Outsourcing will be an approximately $548.5 billion global industry in 2016, with significant emphasis on three broad areas: 1) logistics, sourcing and distribution services; 2) information technology services, including the creation of software and the management of computer centers; and 3) business process outsourcing (BPO) areas such as call centers, financial transaction processing and human resources management.Offshoring, as opposed to outsourcing, covers such a wide variety of nations, products and practices that it is difficult to put a number on the size of the market.
A significant share of offshoring revenue is created by contract manufacturing of electronics, including laptop computers, tablet computers, cellular telephones and items such as iPods.
Another major sector in offshoring is contract manufacturing of shoes, apparel and accessories.
Contract electronics manufacturing was estimated at $390 billion for 2016 by Plunkett Research.
This market has changed dramatically over the past few years, as the demand for personal desktop consumers is weak as consumers more and more tend to use their smartphones as multipurpose devices, such as cameras, game players and music players.Offshore cost savings have become less advantageous, as wages and operating costs have been rising rapidly in the business and manufacturing centers of China and India.
Leading offshore services providers, such as IT consulting giant Wipro, have been opening offices and making acquisitions in America and Europe the locales of some of their leading customers as these international firms become more global and mature in nature.A large portion of the

Transportation is one of the world s largest industries.
Its sectors range from taxis to trucks, airplanes, trains, courier services, ships, barges, warehouses and logistics services.
To a growing extent, it now also includes the use of robotics and artificial intelligence in terms of self-driving cars and trucks, and eventually may include a significant level of robotic delivery vehicles.
Robotics are already providing a high level of automation in ports and warehouses, while artificial intelligence is being applied widely to the supply chain.
In total, during 2016, core transportation revenues in the U.S.
were an estimated $1,058.0 billion, according to Plunkett Research estimates.
Worldwide, these revenues were an estimated $4.7 trillion.
This includes air, rail, water, pipeline, courier and warehousing segments.
At about 6% of global economic activity (GDP), transportation s core sectors add up to a remarkably efficient industry, considering the fact that transportation is a vital service to nearly every other sector of the economy.
In fact, thanks to increasing use of advanced information systems and such strategies as intermodal containers (sending freight via containers that are easily transferred from ship to rail car to truck as needed, without repacking), the transportation industry s productivity is excellent.
Over recent years, globalization placed intense new demands on the transportation and supply chain sector.
FedEx, for example, provides a wide variety of freight and package delivery services in about 220 nations worldwide.

The technology breakthrough that enabled the modern computer occurred shortly after the end of World War II, when researchers at Bell Laboratories in New Jersey created the first working transistor on December 16, 1947.
William Shockley, John Bardeen and Walter Brattain later received a well-deserved Nobel Prize in Physics for their groundbreaking work. What started with one transistor has grown at an astonishing rate.
The Semiconductor Industry Association estimated that in 2008, a total of 6 quintillion transistors were manufactured (that s a six followed by 18 zeros).
That was only a minor down payment on the future.
Consider the steady evolution of chips from Apple and Intel: In 1978, Intel s wildly popular 8086 processor contained 29,000 transistors, an immense leap forward in desktop computing.
The first Pentium processor was introduced by Intel in 1993, with 3.1 million transistors.
In February 2010, Intel launched an Itanium chip with 2 billion transistors.
By 2015, the Apple iPhone 6 contained an Apple A8 microprocessor with 2 billion transistors, in a piece of equipment small enough to carry around in your pocket.
By one estimate, Apple s product sales alone were launching about 100 quintillion transistors into the market on a yearly basis as of early 2015.
Worldwide sales of semiconductors hit $333.0 billion in 2014, according to the Semiconductor Industry Association, projected to rise to $344.5 billion in 2015. Internet Research Tip: For

im sure you all have experienced extremely high pricing for transfers. in my area ive seen them as low as $65 and as high as $200. i called a local shop today and asked them how much to transfer a rifle from an online purchase, the first thing the guy asked me was how much was the gun. i told him and then he gave me a price of $80. what in the heck does the price of the gun matter with what they charge? just wondering what it actually costs the FFL to register a gun and if some of these guys would rather turn down business by outpricing themslves or is their ego just too big, if i was running a store i wouldnt care if a customer got a fantastic deal online. i would dros him for a reasonable fee and he’ll be a repeat customer, the lights, insurance and rent still have to get paid.

    12-29-2008, 1:32 PM

DROS should be $25. A face to face purchase is max $30 by CA law. Now if you purchase and they bring it in they can charge whatever they want.

What they charge above the $25 is up to the dealer. It is fair to charge above as they are not making money on the gun itself. With that said charging $150 would seem kinda high. $60 seems avergae and fair these days

    12-29-2008, 1:33 PM

For one out-of-state purchase (doesn’t matter what type of firearm/rifle), my local FFL charges a flat fee of $50 for the transfer plus $25 to do the DROS. Also add state tax (7.5%) and it’s $78 out the door.

Max is actually $35 under CA law for FTF PPT transaction.

I used a guy in orange county who charged 55 for the first gun on the dros and 20 for each after that.

although Wes over at 10 % has a really neat policy if you buy a gun from him. regarding other rifles you can put on the dros.

Actually, I believe for a face to face ‘transfer’ a FFL can charge no more than $10 for himself, and then of course the $25 DROS fee. So $35 is the legal limit.

To the OP, if you are running a shop, especially in this economy (panic buying and all), it’s an inconvenience to receive, store, DROS, and hold your weapon – that you didn’t even buy from the store – for 10 more days..and potentially have to deal with returning it if your DROS fails. Not to mention the time somebody has to take to help you keep them from making sales.

So for that, it seems reasonable that a FFL would charge you based on the weapon you’re buying and having him receive/transfer for you. One good thing though, if you pay the FFL a transfer fee like that (aside of the DROS fee which goes to the DOJ for no reason at all), you don’t have to feel guilty about not spending a dime in his store. on the other hand, maybe ask the FFL to wave the fee and spend a good $100 or so in his store and see if he’s good with that.

In short, put yourself in his shoes.

Discover Student Credit Card Review 2016

    by CreditCardForum Staff

Getting your first credit card as a college student may not be easy. In fact, because students often have a limited credit history, the cards aimed at them aren t usually the best when it comes to rewards. However the Discover student cards are different. Here are three reasons why

    Reason #1: Way better rewards

There are two Discover cards designed for students: Discover it for Students and Discover it chrome for students. Here s what the Discover it® for Students is giving for rewards

    • 5 percent cash back in categories. You get new categories every quarter that you can sign up for.
    • 1 percent on everything else. You will always get at least 1 percent on everything else you buy.

As for the Discover it® chrome for Students, it s offering:

    • A permanent 2 percent cash back on up to $1,000 in spending each quarter on combined gas station and restaurant purchases
    • 1 percent cash back on all other purchases

Reason #2: More benefits than most student cards

Both Discover student cards offer the following

    • Purchase Protection. In my opinion this is one of the most useful credit card benefits. With it, the eligible purchases made with your Discover card are protected for the first 90 days against theft or accidental damage, up to $500 in coverage per purchase.
    • Extended Product Warranty. On eligible purchases, Discover gives you an additional year of coverage on your existing warranty of 36 months or less. So let s say you buy something, like a brand new iPad from the Apple store, that comes only with a one-year manufacturer s warranty. In addition to that, you will have one year extra through Discover for no additional cost.
    • Return Protection. Ever try to return something but the store won t take it back because more than 30 days have gone by since the purchase? The nice thing about this benefit is that you can return any qualifying purchase to Discover within 90 days for up to a $500 refund, even if the store won t take it back. Keep in mind though that just like any return, you have to give back the item in like-new condition.
    • $0 Fraud Liability Guarantee. Don t worry about getting scammed, because if your card or account number is ever used fraudulently, you won t be responsible for those charges.

Reason #3: The fees are fair

    • No annual fee. Yep that s right, you get all the above benefits for no additional cost.
    • No over-limit fee. You won t get charged a fee if you go over your credit limit.
    • No foreign transaction fees. Many credit cards will charge you up to 3 percent extra when making purchases outside the U.S. That goes for purchases made when you are physically outside the U.S. but sometimes also for purchases you make online from overseas merchants. With Discover, however, you can use your card anywhere in the world without paying those fees (assuming the merchant accepts Discover).
    • No pay-by-phone fee. Need to make a payment by phone using your checking account? Some cards will charge you $5 or $10 bucks to do this, but not Discover.
    • Free FICO score on your monthly statement. This card gives you your real FICO score from TransUnion on your monthly statements. Considering the fact that you probably got a credit card to build your credit, being able to monitor your progress for free is a huge perk. That score would otherwise cost you $20 every time you check it.
    • No late fee on your first late payment. Normally, late payments can cost you up to $35 a pop. But with this card, at least you get one freebie. That s definitely helpful during college finals when you may forget.
    • No interest rate increases for paying late. A lot of cards will jack up your APR if you ever pay late. This one won t do that.

Compare the student credit cards for yourself

Worried about your card not being accepted? Discover is accepted at more than 94 percent of the top 2,000 internet retailers and more than 8 million businesses. You can use them almost everywhere that takes Visa and MasterCard.

Best Sign-up Offers (updated January 2016)

You won t find these promotions everywhere, but I m listing both here so you can choose the one that s best for your needs.

    Discover it® for Students:
Offer #1: Get a 0 percent intro APR for 6 months on purchases. After that, it s a standard variable purchase APR of 13.24 percent to 22.24 percent.

    Discover it® chrome for Students:

Oh yeah, and here s some important advice you not know about credit cards. In fact, a lot of old people don’t even know these things:

#1 – Build credit even without a balance
One of the reasons people start getting into debt is because they think it’s actually good for their credit score to have a balance. But this is completely wrong and doing so can actually harm your credit!

There is a huge difference between carrying a balance (allowing a balance to carry on past the due date and paying interest) and reporting a balance (having a balance when your billing cycle closes). When your billing cycle closes each month, the amount due is what’s reported to the credit bureaus. If you then pay that reported balance in full, you won t have to pay interest, and you ll get all the credit-building benefits.

So if you are regularly using your Discover card, you have the ability to build your credit… carrying a balance into the next billing cycle (and paying interest on it) offers absolutely no benefit to your credit score.

#2 – Carrying a large balance may hurt your credit
Even though you should let a balance report each month, keep it small.

The percentage of your credit limit you use – known as credit utilization – is factored into your FICO credit score. Having high utilization is actually bad. Banks like people that have a lot of credit but don’t use it! With the FICO formula, using above 30 percent of your credit limit may negatively affect your credit core.

The simple solution? Once you get your student credit card, always stay below 30 percent of your credit limit. Make multiple payments each month to keep it below that mark.

#3 – A better score means cheaper student loans
Let’s be honest here… college tuition is out of control! If you’re going to be taking out more loans to finish your degree, of course you want to get the best interest rate possible. Well, whether you get a good rate or bad rate depends on your credit score and history.

This is why it’s so important to not screw up with your new Discover student credit card, or any credit account for that matter. Use your cards responsibly – pay your bills on time and in full, and keep your credit utilization in check (as discussed above). Doing this will help build up your credit and you will be thankful for that when it comes time to get a loan.

    History

The RLA was founded in 2002 when research studies were completed which revealed that over $750 billion annually was being spent on reverse logistics processes in North America alone. It was determined that a wide gap existed between third party service providers who offered reverse logistics services, and the OEMs, Retailers, and Brand Marketers who needed their services. The study also revealed there was no existing platform for discussing and sharing ‘best practices’ through any tradeshows, magazines, or trade associations that served the Aftermarket Supply Chain, or as it is called today – Reverse Logistics.

    RLA’s Mission

We are a member driven global trade association for the returns and reverse industry, offering information, research, solutions and services for Manufacturers, Branded, and Retail companies from Third Party Providers. Our goal is to educate and inform Reverse Logistics professionals around the world, and be the voice of the returns and reverse industry.

The RLA focuses on all industries in the reverse logistics process, and our goal is to provide RL process knowledge to all industries. We want to educate everyone about the reverse logistics processes that are common to all industries. The Reverse Logistics Association monitors thousands of 3rd Party Service Solutions Partners worldwide who are providing Aftermarket services, while supporting the outsourcing needs of OEM, ODM, Branded and Retail companies.

    Membership

In order to be able to support world-wide trade conferences and the many other activities of the association, the RLA relies on funding through annual membership fees, and service fees for the various products it provides. Becoming a member of the association means you have access to a wide range of participatory opportunities to interact with RL professionals and top Fortune 500 companies who are engaged in cutting-edge best practices, and who are dedicated to increasing the knowledge base of all RL professionals.
