If you re like thousands of other Oklahomans who suffered hail damage from the recent storm, you might have thought to yourself. Can you save a few bucks on repairs? Well we decided to find out if there are really any cheap and effective do it yourself repair methods.

A simple Google search for hail damage returns dozens of result for “do it yourself” repairs. Some reviews say they work, others say no way.

So we grabbed the dry ice, compressed air, a hair dryer, the “Pops-a-dent” kit, and, of course, the damaged car to test them on.

First up is the “Pops-a-dent.” The directions say apply a generous amount of hot glue, attach the pad to the car and wait.

In the meantime, we moved on some other suggestions. The guy in an instruction video says to heat up the area around the dent with a hair dryer until it s hot to the touch, and then put the dry ice over the dent. It s supposed to force the metal to contract and dent pops out, or not.

It turns out the dent is still there.

With that, we tried the compressed air after heating up the dented area, which is supposed to have the same effect, but no luck.

Eight-minutes later and the “Pops-a-dent” is ready. It popped, but the dent is still there.

We couldn t get any of these methods to work, but several of our viewers told us on Facebook it can work.

Some of these techniques might work better on bigger dents, so feel free to try them. But judging by the amount of dents this recent hail storm left behind, it might just be worth it to take it to the body shop.

So if you do take your car to a repair shop, there are a few things you want to keep in mind. Ask people you know to recommend a good place, never pay up front and check the company s Better Business Bureau grade.

Is it time to sell your old car or truck? Here’s how to tell

Each year you drive your old car is one more year you don’t have to worry about paying for a new one.

Yet, with every turn of the odometer, you’re one mile closer to big repair and maintenance bills.

At some point, it costs so much to keep your old ride on the road that you’d be better off investing all of the money you’re spending at the garage on a new car or truck. Our database of the best auto loan rates can help get you started.

There’s no magical mileage threshold that tells you when it’s time to ditch your car. In fact, many of today’s vehicles routinely exceed 100,000 miles without experiencing major mechanical problems.

But if you’re being hit with one repair bill after another, these 5 steps can help you decide if the time has come to ditch your old car or truck.

Step 1. Find out what your car is worth.

All smart decision-making starts with this.

To find out what your car is worth, research it on an auto valuation site, such as Edmunds.com or Kelley Blue Book (kbb.com).

You’ll be asked a few questions about the year, make and model of your car, the odometer reading and the condition it’s in, taking any repairs you’re planning to make into account.

Those websites will provide you with three potential values for your car.

The one you want to use is the trade-in value, which is the lowest of the three estimates.

This is the amount you can expect to receive from a dealer if you include your current car in a deal to buy another car there.

Let one of the best commuting cars of 2014 take the stress and worry out of those slogs to work, the supermarket and other daily destinations. They’re safe and economical but don’t scrimp on creature comforts, including automatic transmissions and air-conditioning. With prices starting at just over $19,000 and climbing to just under $31,000, we’re confident you’ll find the perfect ride.

Step 2. Determine how much it will cost to keep it on the road.

Ask your mechanic for a rundown of all the:

  • Big repairs that must be done right now to keep your vehicle running.
  • Additional repairs that can be postponed but need to be done over the next year.
  • Major maintenance that will come due during the next 12 months based on how many miles are on the car.

We’re not talking about oil changes.

We’re talking about the more costly work required as vehicles reach 60,000 to 100,000 miles — everything from changing the transmission fluid and coolant to replacing worn-out tires, brake pads and rotors, water pumps, suspension parts and timing belts.

Check your owner’s manual for the manufacturer’s recommended maintenance schedule. If you don’t have the manual, any reputable shop can check the schedule for your car and tell you exactly what you’ll need to do and how much those repairs will cost.

Postpone that work, and you’ll run a greater risk that your car will break down and stick you with an even bigger repair bill once you’ve been towed to the shop.

Take the timing belt, for example. It connects the crankshaft to the camshaft and controls the opening and closing of the valves in your engine.

Replacing a timing belt often costs $600 or more. But if you don’t do it, you can pretty much count on a worn-out timing belt breaking at some point, seriously damaging your engine.

Then it would cost $2,000 or more to get it running again.

Also, watch for two signs of big trouble:

  • Blue smoke out the tailpipe means you’re burning oil, which very likely indicates the oncoming need for an engine replacement. (A little white smoke until the engine warms up is OK.)
  • Slipping between gear changes means your automatic transmission is failing. (Slipping is where the engine revs up without any appreciable increase in speed.)

Add up all of the repairs and maintenance you’ll need to do over the next year, and compare it to the trade-in value of your car.

If you’ll have to spend more than the car is worth to keep it on the road for another year, then it makes financial sense to invest that money in a new ride.

Step 4. Recalculate your costs using past repair bills.

You aren’t finished if that comparison falls on the side of keeping your old car, especially if it’s not a decisive difference.

Mechanics can’t look at your car and predict everything that’s likely to break over the next year, so maybe you didn’t have a list of estimated future repairs in Step 2.

That doesn’t mean you’re not going to have any.

Reliability guides, such as the ones from Consumer Reports. provide entire lists of problems that consistently plague almost every make and model as it ages.

In fact, here’s a pretty tried-and-true rule of car ownership: The older your car gets, the more stuff breaks.

BEWARE! I took my car to this guy  (Norman Heck aka Skip ), because I trusted him. He really seemed to know his stuff, and I thought he was an honest and professional mechanic. He not only scratched my hood so deep that the paint came off (looks like someone put a mechanical component on the top of it and it slid), but he didn t even own up to the responsibility of not connecting the power steering pump to the reservoir correctly! His response to anything is that it was like that before he got it. Along with that, my car was in the shop nearly two weeks. I was told it would only take a few days. He has great rates, but it is NOT worth it. I REGRET TAKING MY VEHICLE TO HIM! It was a HUGE mistake. Do It Yourself Automotive is a joke, and if you don t believe me; take a good look around the shop and at the way things are run. Take your car elsewhere if you don t want any trouble.

Do It Yourself Automotives response to Lucas K. As we all know, You can t please everyone all the time. While some of what Lucas is saying is accurate, he is not telling the whole story. On 7/3/12 Lucas came to us asking us to replace his timing chains and motor mounts on his 2006 Altima. We agreed and I told him we would try to get his car back by Friday the 6th. I ordered his parts from a Nissan Dealership and they arrived the next day. We got the motor out of the car on Thursday the 5th and found a very worn set of Chains, Tensioners and Guides as well as 3 of the four motor mounts.  Friday we started to put his car back together and found that the Dealer had sent us some wrong parts and completely left out another part. This put us in a bind as the parts had to be special ordered and would take a couple of days to get. Being Friday afternoon, the dealer told us that the soonest we could get them was Wednesday afternoon. Throughout this process we were in contact with Lucas making sure he had transportation. He continually said it s no problem, He was using a company car. On Tuesday the 10th he told us he had to give the company car back to a coworker and needed transportation. At that time we rented Lucas a car at no cost to him, until we could complete the repairs on his. On Saturday the 14th we finished his car and he picked it up. He was back in 15 minutes complaining of steering  and transmission issues with the car. He had been in about a week or two prior to the timing chain/motor mount repairs complaining of steering issues. I test drove the car and found no problems. I explained to him that we repaired the timing chains on his car, not the steering or the transmission. Neither of the issues have anything to do with the work we performed. John, Our ASE Certified Master Technician went with him on a test drive to experience these issues and found nothing. John asked Lucas how the engine ran and Lucas responded, Its GREAT! John replied, that s what we fixed.  John also explained to me after the ride that Lucas was driving the car like it was a NASCAR event and actually scared John.  Lucas returned again an hour or so later still complaining of a clicking in the steering wheel which I could not recreate. I explained to Lucas that we would love to look into these issues and repair them at an additional cost. He said he would return in a week or so. On7/19/12 Lucas came to our shop saying his steering was whining. I looked and his reservoir was a little low on fluid so I filled it up at no cost to him. As I was doing this he said he had found a scratch on the hood of his car the day before and accused us of causing it. As I tried to explain the care we took he kept cutting me off and getting louder and eventually yelling. This I admit got me excited and I got angry and told him to leave the property.  This is a Black car. There is no way one could miss the scratches he showed me for 5 days and then just all of a sudden see them. They stood out like a neon sign. We took very good care to make sure that we caused no damage to his vehicle or any other for that matter. The first thing we did when his car came in, was take the hood off the car completely wrap it up and placed it in another part of the shop where it couldn t get damaged. To us it seems he wants to blame us for every problem the car has now.   He was quoted $2230.00 and his final bill came to $2097.84.   Sincerely, DIY Automotive

You should do it. Especially if you’re a woman.

If you ve ever bought a car, you are familiar with the stomach-churching moment after the test drive when the salesman asks, What would it take you to buy today? and starts scratching out numbers on a pad. The process is notoriously confusing for everyone, but there s tons of evidence showing this system disadvantages women more than men. Buying online doesn t merely eliminate the physical discomfort women feel in car dealerships, though that counts for a lot. (Over email, no one asks about your husband; heck, no one even needs know your gender.) More importantly, it eliminates the landmines of Haggling While Female.

For a variety of reasons, women are not as good at negotiating as men. For one thing, we re not as practiced at it. Several studies have shown that women tend to negotiate less often. in part because the assertiveness required for the task gets socialized out of us. After all, nice girls aren t supposed to cause conflict, and there are real-world implications for those who buck the rules. In one study. both men and women pronounced female job applicants less hirable when they asked for more compensation than when male applicants did the same thing. (Male subjects in particular were less likely to want to work with women who tried to negotiate.) So it s not surprising that negotiating causes women more anxiety than it causes men and that women are less likely to realize they can negotiate in a given situation. You have to do all sorts of tricky things to get them to haggle, like describe it as asking instead of negotiating or explicitly tell them that they re allowed to do it. It s no wonder that women were said to flock to the defunct car company Saturn. which was known for its no-haggle policy.

Part of what s so crazy about buying a car the traditional way is that the Wild West pricing means there s no way to know whether the deck is stacked against you from the outset merely because you re a woman. Studies conducted in the 90s by economist Ian Ayres showed that Chicago-area dealerships routinely quoted blacks and women higher initial offers than white men, so that even after haggling they wound up with higher prices. Data from auto repair shops shows something more nuanced: Women are quoted higher prices unless they break gender stereotypes, either by showing they know the market rate for a repair or by insisting on a discount. All of which is why, when women buy a car, we first research the bejesus out of it. We know that certain salesmen will be inclined to treat us as easy marks, and we ll need to defy their expectations. So we prep and prep and then show up, hoping we don t get a jerk. Sure, we can request a different salesman or hit another dealership, but we ll pay for it in wasted time.

There s one factor that does away with a ton of these gender-based problems. According to the work of DePaul professor Alice Stuhlmacher, women consistently do better when they negotiate virtually. Stuhlmacher and colleagues compared face-to-face negotiations with those conducted online, by phone, or by video and found that time and again, women were more assertive when they weren t haggling face-to-face. Perhaps because they were less concerned about preserving relationships or coming across as nice, women were more apt to do things like lie for tactical reasons or stand firm at a number instead of making a counteroffer. There wasn t this gap between what s considered appropriate female behavior and what s smart negotiating behavior. Men, who face no repercussions for what s deemed a typically masculine endeavor, behaved the same regardless of the setting.

Virtual settings also appear to upset hierarchies. conferring more favorable outcomes on those with less power. Car dealerships are a prime example of settings where women have less power for a whole host of reasons because they are a minority, because automobiles are considered a traditionally masculine realm, and because the consumer in general is confused by the way car pricing works. (Is that $795 destination fee really necessary? Has the dealer s invoice price been inflated so you think you re getting a better deal?) Not only do virtual settings eliminate the status markers that might otherwise inhibit behavior, but they make it easier to remain poker-faced even if you are intimidated.

The major advantage I felt I had negotiating over email was time. High-pressure tactics in car dealerships rely, in part, on the consumer s desire to end a stressful experience as soon as possible. But, thoroughly empowered by all the information I had at hand, I found emailing back and forth with salesmen to be fun. The power dynamic was reversed; the dealerships now were the ones eager to secure my deposit before I got a better deal or before the end of the month, so they could make their numbers. I took my time. I looked up what others in my area had paid for the same car. I emailed around the lowest price I got (a good $2,500 under the highest) to see if other dealers could match it. I asked the dealers to enumerate every fee being added to the quoted price, and then I looked up the fees to see if they were legitimate. I inquired who was willing to trade with other dealers to get us the car in blue and who was willing to deliver the car to our house. (One dealership was, but the price was still too high.) Reading questions other buyers had asked alerted me to issues I hadn t considered and gave me social reinforcement that such questions were allowed. What surprised me was that, freed from that terrible certainty that I was going to get screwed one way or another, I really liked negotiating. Being the well-informed, hard-nosed customer felt like karmic retribution for all those women talked down to, quoted higher prices, or told they d look so good in a certain car.

In the end, playing dealers off one another was an interesting experiment, and several places lowered their prices by quite a bit, but the shop with the initial lowest quote was still the best. So I put down a deposit by email, and one Saturday, my husband, my daughter, and I drove out to New Jersey to pick up our new car. We walked in, signed our names a thousand times, and drove out with our Mazda 5 at the agreed-upon price in a mere hour.

Afterward, my husband said he d noticed several salesmen in the store preferred to make eye contact with him. Maybe so, but if it were the case, I didn t notice. I was so damn happy.
