Notre Dame College offers two licensure tracks for students enrolled in the online Bachelor of Arts in Education program. These specialized licensures provide students with practical knowledge and expanded skill sets that they can apply to their classroom. How Do You Become an Early Intervention Specialist?

If you have received the calling to work with young children who have physical, emotional, intellectual, and/or sensory impairments, you may want to become an early intervention specialist. Within both classroom and center-based programs, early intervention specialists are responsible for designing, implementing, modifying, and evaluating interventions to positively impact the developmental needs of infants or toddlers with disabilities. Early intervention specialists must have strong collaboration skills, a broad understanding of medical terminology, high energy level to interact with young children, and an arsenal of effective intervention strategies. In order to get on the right track towards this rewarding educational profession, the following is a guide to the steps for becoming an early intervention specialist.

1. Earn a Bachelor’s Degree in Special Education

Since early intervention specialists are given the duty of providing supports for children from birth through 5 years old who are displaying developmental delays, it is recommended that they start by earning undergraduate training related to early childhood special education. Within a bachelor’s degree program for special education, students may also want to take supplemental coursework related to physical, speech, and/or occupational therapy to expand their areas of specialization down the road. Coursework should cover topics related to developmental milestones, educational assessments, and a broad array of disabilities that are experienced by very young children. It is recommended that you choose one of the programs accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) for ideal preparation.

2. Pursue a Master’s Degree with Emphasis in Early Childhood Intervention

After receiving an undergraduate degree, it is suggested that early intervention specialists further their education at the graduate level by pursuing a master’s degree with an emphasis in early childhood intervention. While some of the larger universities in the United States offer stand-alone programs for early intervention specialists, this concentration is often part of an early childhood special education degree or certificate program. For specific preparation for becoming an early intervention specialist, you will want to fill up your schedule with courses related to behavioral problems, classroom intervention, child development theory, child psychology, early intervention assessments, and risk factors in special needs children.

3. Fulfill State Licensure Requirements

In order to legally practice as an early intervention specialist, the majority of states nationwide will require you to fulfill state licensure requirements through the state’s department for education. This is especially true if early intervention specialists are planning to work in public school systems, state-funded intervention programs, or other formal educational services. Although the licensure requirements vary greatly from state to state, many will require specific coursework related to special education, experience working in an early childhood care center, and portfolios to review previous work related to early intervention. This course is designed to graduate early childhood educators who are competent, skilled teachers ready to work in schools and a range of early childhood settings.

A key feature of this course is the emphasis given to connecting theory with practice so that graduates will be proficient in developing effective early childhood educational programs that are informed by current research, policy and practice.

Partnerships with over 650 schools and numerous Children’s Services settings allow pre-service teachers to gain experience in diverse settings, including public, private, metropolitan, regional and remote contexts working with children, families and communities.

In addition, a distinguishing feature of this course is that pre-service teachers have the opportunity in the fourth year of their course to specialise and broaden their knowledge and skills in an area of interest. Units are also available in the degree that enables pre-service teachers to complete accreditation requirements to teach in Catholic schools.

The following course specific requirements are applicable:

Students must attain an Academic IELTS with an average level of 7.5 or more, across the four components of listening, speaking, reading and writing; no score below level 7.0 in any of these components; and, a score of 8.0 or more in the components of speaking and listening.

If secondary education and degree studies were completed within a period of 2 years before applying for registration in Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, the UK or the USA, applicants do not need to provide proof of English competency.

Applicants who have completed their secondary education in South Africa in English and have an undergraduate degree taught in English from a South African University are deemed to have met English language requirements.

Successful completion of the International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) grade C or above, PLUS a completed 4 year National Diploma.

Students have the opportunity to complete a fast-tracked final year and achieve eligibility for employment in schools from Term 4 during the same year.

Practicum requirement

In each year of the program, students undertake compulsory Professional Practice and in the final year, students undertake an Assistant Teacher Program (ATP) comprising of one term of approximately 10 weeks of continuous teaching practice. The Assistant Teacher Program is conducted during the final year of the course in the second term of the school year.

Attendance requirements

All Professional Practices are undertaken on a full-time basis and teaching students are required to give a full-time commitment to the school during the scheduled Professional Practice periods.

Clearances and/or Risk Management Protocols Required

To undertake a Professional Practice in a school or childcare setting, all pre-service teacher education students over the age of 18 must have supplied ECU with evidence of the following two clearances:

A valid National Police History Check from the Department of Education WA.

Early Childhood Education Master’s Programs at Wheelock

Wheelock is the only private higher education institution in Massachusetts to be accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) and also dually recognized by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC). Wheelock offers two Early Childhood Education graduate programs:

Master of Science in Early Childhood Education for Initial Licensure (PreK-2) – 37 credits

This program helps students develop and refine skills in curriculum design, observation and assessment, communication, collaboration, responding to diverse learning styles, and classroom management. The program emphasizes a commitment to working in a multi-racial and multicultural society, working partnership with families, fully integrating children with special needs into the learning environment, and collaboration with community members and agencies.

Students participate in two extensive practicum experiences. These total at least 200 hours in each practicum and encompass two semesters of student teaching experiences in early childhood settings: one in a kindergarten or a pre-kindergarten-level site and one in a grade 1-2 site. At least one of the practicum sites will include children with special needs. In some cases, students may use their current job as a placement opportunity.

This program can lead to Massachusetts Early Childhood Teacher of Students With or Without Disabilities Initial Licensure upon completion of the necessary state tests.

Master of Science in Care and Education in Early Childhood Settings (PreK-Kindergarten) – 30 credits

This program is designed for students who will work with young children (aged 2-8 years) in public, private, and parochial care and education settings as caregivers, classroom teachers, lead teachers, directors, and family liaison workers.

The Care and Education program has two different options: one for beginning early childhood education practitioners and one for experienced or continuing practitioners.

Beginning practitioners typically are students without an academic background in early education who want to pursue careers outside of a public school setting. At least one 300-hour placement in an appropriate setting is required, and you may choose to do an additional 100- to 300-hour practicum. Additionally, you can use your course experience to qualify for the Massachusetts Department of Early Education and Care (DEEC) lead teacher credential.

Continuing practitioners are students who want to increase their knowledge of early childhood education and may have already obtained an initial teaching license or have an academic background in early education. Students who have their initial license and complete this program may use their coursework in to advance an initial teacher license to the Professional level after teaching for three years. Continuing students who have not obtained an initial license may want o pursue careers in early childhood outside of the public school system. Those student can individually tailor their program to meet their specific needs and interests.

Signature Early Childhood Education Courses

(for all Wheelock Early Childhood Education Programs)

Racial and Cultural Identities (EDU 505): This course is distinctly different from the offerings of other schools because its focus is on the self rather than the other. It requires participants to consider their own social identity in terms of race, ethnicity, social class, gender, and citizenship.

Capstone Course (EDU 655/702): The Capstone Course requires that students prepare and present a portfolio of their learning to a committee of arts and sciences and education faculty members and practitioners.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: When can I enroll in these programs?
A: Students can enroll in the MS Care and Education program in the fall or summer semester. The preferred start time for MS Early Childhood Education program is the summer semester (June). This start term allows students to complete required coursework during the summer term and then begin a full-time internship in the fall. However, it is possible to begin in the fall semester. Those wishing to begin in the fall semester (September) will need to speak with a faculty member first. If allowed to enter in the fall, applicants should either have met with the Field Experience Office and arranged an internship for the fall, have received approval for a “self-placement,” or recognize that they may not be able to do their internship until the following fall semester.

Q: Do I need to be a full-time student to participate in this program?
A: Students in the MS Care and Education program may be full- or part-time. Students in the MS Early Childhood Education program may begin their course work on a part-time basis, but must enroll full-time during semesters in which the two practica are completed. Full-time MS Early Childhood Education students may complete the program in four semesters, and are strongly encouraged to begin in the summer. All students should meet with their advisors to develop a study plan, as there is a sequence of courses that must be maintained.

Q: Do I need experience working with children to qualify for admission to this program?
A: While preference is given to applicants who have experience working with children and families (especially in a group setting), previous experience is not required.

Q: What if I already have an initial license?
A: Students who already hold an initial license in Early Childhood Education, but do not have a master’s degree are welcome to apply for our Master of Science in Care and Education in Early Childhood Settings.

Graduates of other bachelor’s programs who have their initial license and are looking to gain professional licensure should contact a representative of Wheelock’s Office of Graduate Admissions. Students in this category may qualify for one of our combined degree options.

Graduates with a Ph.D. in early childhood education are prepared for positions in educational administration, early childhood advocacy, postsecondary education or educational research. It’s every working stiff’s dream. saying sayonara to the daily grind while you still have your own teeth. In our early retirement fantasies, we’re traveling the world, healthy and in the prime of our lives, visiting those hard-to-pronounce countries we’ve always talked about and sampling the finest local fare.

Surveys show that more than half of workers between the ages of 30 and 50 plan to retire before they’re 60 [source: MSN ]. But there’s only one problem with this wishful thinking: Retiring early is easy, but making your money last is hard.

One problem with saving up for early retirement is that we tend not to think beyond those first few glorious years of good health and full checking accounts — we don’t do the long-term math. If the average male life expectancy is 75.2 and we retire at 55, then our savings. stock market investments and 401(k) accounts need to last for 20 years. And what if we live even longer than average?

­And don’t forget that life can get tricky during those last five or 10 years. Very few fortunate souls drift away in their sleep at age 88 without ever having major surgeries, hospitalizations or chronic (and expensive) conditions to manage — not to mention the ever-increasing costs of medical insurance and prescription drugs .

While we tend to overestimate our health, we underestimate our post-retirement financial needs. A 2002 survey found that only 17 percent of workers thought they’d need 80 percent of their salary after retirement. Forty percent thought they’d be fine with 60 percent of current earnings [source: MSN ]. That might suffice for a few good years, but the longer you live, the less chance your money will last.

Furthermore, isn’t it possible that traveling the world and living out of a suitcase could get pretty tedious? Did you ever think that you might be bored without a day job? Do you have enough hobbies and interests to sustain you for 20 to 30 years without business trips, deadlines and daily meetings?

But don’t get discouraged. If you’re serious about retiring early and dedicated to making it work, you can make it happen. All it takes is some serious financial planning, a strict budget and some good old-fashioned luck.
