How to Repair a Dent in Your Car With Filler

Sometimes your car will receive a dent or gouge that s too small to justify the expense of a professional repair but too big to simply ignore. You can cut your repair costs by doing the body work yourself. You ll need body filler, sometimes called Bondo (the most popular brand), which is a durable plastic resin that can be shaped and sanded. You ll also need the following supplies:

  • Sandpaper: 150 grit, 220 grit, 400 grit wet/dry
  • Rubber sandpaper block
  • Body filler (with hardener, usually included)
  • Glazing and spot putty
  • Rigid plastic spreader
  • Flexible plastic spreader
  • Automotive primer
  • Work gloves, safety goggles, mask
  • Spray bottle filled with water

You ll also need to block off several hours of time. Repairing your bumper is a time-consuming process that requires patience.

Prepare the Surface

Body filler doesn t stick well to paint, so you ll need to sand the damaged area down to bare metal in order for the Bondo to work. For this job, you can use a heavier sandpaper, like a 150-grit. Regardless of how large the actual damage is, you must remove at least 3 inches beyond the dent.

In this example, you ll see some small circles on the surface. Sometimes it s a good idea, especially if you are dealing with multiple dents, to mark the location of the damage so that you know where to focus your repair easily. You should also note that the pictured body panel has evidence of an old repair on it (the beige-colored areas are old body filler).

Mix the Body Filler

Body filler is a two-part epoxy that must be mixed before use. It consists of a creme hardener and a base filler. Once you mix the two, the filler will harden in less than 5 minutes, so you ll need to work quickly and carefully. You can mix the hardener on any clean, smooth surface that is disposable. Follow the directions on the filler can to mix the proper amount of hardener with filler. Mix the two using a rigid plastic spreader.

Apply the Filler

Using a flexible plastic spreader, spread filler in an area at least 3 inches outside of the actual damage. You ll need the extra space to properly smooth and feather the hardened filler. Don t worry about being too neat with it. You ll be sanding away any imperfections once the filler hardens.

Once the filler has completely hardened, you re ready to start sanding. With your sandpaper wrapped around a sanding block (rubber sanding blocks are best and can be purchased in automotive or home repair stores), start sanding the filler using 150-grit sandpaper. Sand lightly and evenly over the entire surface of the repair with broad circular strokes. Sand past the edge of the filler to create a smooth transition.

When the filler is pretty close to smooth, switch to the 220-grit paper and continue until it s even. It s not unusual to miss a spot or realize there are some gaps or pits in your filler. If this is the case, mix a new batch of filler and repeat the process until it s smooth. You ll sand away most of the filler, leaving the dent filled and a smooth transition between metal and filler.

Glaze

Spot putty is another version of filler, but much finer and easier to sand. It doesn t need to be mixed and can be applied directly from the tube to the repair. The spot putty fills in any tiny impressions in the filler. Smooth (or glaze) spot putty across the repair surface with a flexible plastic spreader. It dries faster than the body filler, but be sure you give it enough time before you begin to sand it.

    A blocked toilet can seem like an emergency job requiring a plumber to remove the blockage. but do not panic, as it is a task which is often easy to fix by using our FREE yet simple method. In the first instance we are going to try a mop and a sturdy plastic bag. As you can see from the many comments we’ve had, it seems that many people have had success with blocked toilets using our ‘super sized plunger’ which is made simply from an old mop with a plastic bag tied around the head. Make sure the bag is sturdy and won’t tear too easily. This seems to be a sure fire way to shift the stubborn blockages that other plungers just can’t deal with. Best of all it’s FREE.

    Our Step By Step Guide.

    Step 1. Get a good sized mop and sturdy plasic bag. It’s better if it won’t rip.

    Step 2. Attach the bag firmly to the mop. Cable ties work well.

    Step 3. Force the mop down the toilet. Once may well do it. If not then try repeatedly.

    Step 4. Admire your unblocked toilet.

    Or The Conventional Way

    To unblock a blocked toilet conventionally rather than using the mop and bag method, here are the Essential Tools you will need:

    • Plunger
    • Rubber Gloves
    • Goggles
    • Bucket
    • Clearing Rods
    • Auger

    What Causes a Blockage?

    Unfortunately, toilets occasionally do get blocked, usually due to too much toilet paper or heavy loads being put down the pan. First things first, you need to find the location of the blockage. If you have drain inspection covers outside, it is worth lifting the one nearest the pan. If the chamber is full, you need to try to clear the blockage in the pipes or around the drain either using a specialist rod or a makeshift device, such as a wire or piece of wood. If the Drain Is Unblocked. the blockage must be located somewhere between the chamber and the pan. In most cases, the blockage is found at the pan itself.

    Unblocking the Pan

    Following these simple steps should fix most blockages:

    • Try pushing a flexible drain cleaning wire down the WC pan.
    • It is a good idea to ask someone to observe the drain chamber while you are doing this to see if the item causing the blockage emerges. Anything emerging that may have caused the blockage should be removed. If you don’t remove an offending item, you only run the risk of it causing a blockage further down the system which may be more difficult to unblock.
    • It’s worth using a plunger or auger (see below) if you have one.
    • A chemical drain cleaner or caustic soda may help, but you must follow the instructions carefully and remember these products need to be handled safely. Always use rubber gloves.
    Plunger Basics

    Try using a plunger to unblock the damage. Most people have a cup shaped plunger but this does not always work and can be a bit messy. Toilets bowls benefit from a specialist flange shaped or a ball shaped plunger. Both these types of plunger have a bottom which is shaped to seal the opening in the bottom of the toilet bowl. This seal action as you plunge creates the necessary vacuum and pressure and is more effective.

    Toilet Auger

    A toilet or WC auger, available from most hardware stores, is a special plumbing tool used to clear blocked toilets. This device uses a flexible clearing rod with a hand crank, a long sleeve handle and a special auger device at the end which is used to break blockages or retrieve them. The auger drops into the toilet as far as possible. It reaches about 0.5 metres. The auger is connected via the flexible shaft to the crank handle which you control. When the obstruction is discovered you clamp and turn the cranked handle and either push or pull the blockage to dislodge it. Once the blockage is removed flush and clean your loo and disinfect the auger.

    Another useful tip is to consider draining water from your toilet pan. If the water level in the pan of your WC is high, you should consider this. Try using any old container to bale out the water first or you can use a hose to siphon it off. You can also try pouring hot or boiling water down the pan as an alternative to using caustic soda. Often this can be helpful and will break down clogged up matter down your waste pipe.

    Is a “Do it Yourself” Alarm System Worth Doing?

    If you own your own home and live anywhere except on an island with visibility in all directions, you have probably received solicitations for alarm systems. Alarm systems can be very comprehensivecomplete with computer monitoring on the job, motion, smoke and fire alarms, water break alarms, automated calls to the police department, and wailing sirens that would wake the dead.     Alarm systems can be classified into indoor or outdoor systems. An outdoor system has floodlights and sirens which are triggered by motion. The system is able to determine the size of the intruder and thus will not activate with the passage of a bird or the neighborhood dog.

    The more popular alarm systems are the indoor systems. These range in complexity from a simple siren that screams out a warning if someone opens a door to a complex unit that either calls the local police or fire department, or sets off an audio alarm, or both. Indoor units can be either hardwired into your home or wireless. With an older home, wireless is usually better as the components can be installed without cutting into your walls. Experts advise new home builders to incorporate a hardwired system into the new construction.

    Once you have decided what type of system to buy, you have to choose whether to hire a professional to perform the installation or do it yourself. If you have a very large home or apartment complex with a lot of video surveillance needed, it would probably be best to hire a professional even though a DIY project would cut the cost by about 50%. Furthermore, it is sometimes difficult to maintain a relationship with the alarm company if you do it yourself. In fact, many companies will actually install the unit for free in return for a contract under which you will pay a monitoring fee for the first year or two. Some experts consider this monitoring fee a drawback; however, it works for both the client and the company. You lock in a set fee for the entire period of the contract, and you have a guarantee against failure of the components as well as the protection service you are seeking. Just be sure to compare companies and get a reasonably priced contract.

    If you have a smaller property to protect, you may opt for a do-it-yourself installation. It is possible to have a monitored system even if you perform the installation. Most owner-installed systems, however, work by activating sirens or lights if an intruder breaks a contact on a door or window. The idea is to attract attention of people in the neighborhood and thus scare the intruder away before he can cause any damage. If your property is in a well-populated area, this approach may be adequate, but if you live in a more rural area with neighbors at a distance, a monitored system will be more appropriate.

    So many alarm systems are on the market that it is easy to find one that will suit both your budget and your security needs. There is nothing wrong with installing the system yourself as long as you don’t fool yourself into thinking that a little $30.00 contact unit that will set off a 2 minute siren will be sufficient. In addition, you need to be handy with tools and have an understanding of the way the alarm system works as well as a thorough knowledge of the burglar access points in your own home. In fact, one advantage to installing a good quality system yourself is that when you have finished you will thoroughly understand the system and may learn a thing or two about your home as well. Installing an alarm system takes a professional less than a day. A novice may require several days and the purchase of specific tools. Many homeowners find that the time and the expertise needed are simply worth hiring a professional.

    The LM317 / LM338 / LM350 family of adjustable 3-terminal positive voltage regulators can take a input of 3 to 40 Volts DC and provide a regulated voltage over a 1.2V to 37V output range. The LM317 voltage regulators can provide up to 1.5 Amperes (A) of output current. Where greater output current is required, the LM350 series regulators are suitable up to 3A and the LM338 series voltage regulators for up to 5A of output.

    The LM317 / LM338 / LM350 voltage regulators are exceptionally easy to use, requiring only two external resistors to set the regulated output voltage. You can expect performance of both the line and load regulation using the LM317 / LM338 / LM350 adjustable voltage regulators over that of standard fixed voltage regulator. The LM317 / LM338 / LM350 voltage regulators offer full overload protection. Normally, no capacitors are needed unless the device is situated more than 150 mm (6 inches) from the input filter capacitors in which case an input bypass capacitor is required. An optional output capacitor can be added to improve transient response. The adjustment terminal of the regulator can be bypassed to achieve very high ripple rejection. Refer to the adjustable regulator data sheets below for more information about the LM317 / LM338 / LM350 adjustable voltage regulators.

    LM317 / LM338 / LM350 Voltage Regulator Circuits

    The following schematics show typical circuit applications for the LM317 / LM338 / LM350 voltage regulators. Note. The dropout voltage of the IC regulator is about 1.5 to 2.5 Volts, dependent on the output current (IOUT ). Therefore, the input voltage to the LM317 / LM338 / LM350 regulator will need to be at least 1.5V to 2.5V greater than the desired output voltage. Plan to be about 3V about the desired output voltage. You don’t want to use too high an input voltage as the excess will need to be dissipated as heat through the regulator. See the voltage regulator datasheets above for specific details regarding the dropout voltage and heatsink requirements.

    When external capacitors are used with a voltage regulator it may be necessary to use protection diodes to prevent the capacitors from discharging through low current points into the voltage regulator. Even small capacitors can have a low enough internal series resistance to be able to deliver 20A spikes when shorted. Although the surge is very short in duration, there is enough energy to damage parts of the regulator IC. No protection diodes are required for output voltages of less than 25V or greater than 10 uF capacitance. Figure 3 shows the LM317 / LM338 / LM350 with protection diodes included for use with voltage outputs greater than 25V and high values of output capacitance.

    Solid tantalum capacitors can be used on the voltage output to improve the ripple rejection of the voltage regulator.

    Hey, it s me again! I m back for another article about my favorite mini-computer; the Raspberry Pi. This time I ll be demonstrating some cool DIY projects that I found on the net, which are very easy to setup and apply. Some require a lot of patience and hardware though. The purpose of this article is to present projects which you can try, to give you brand new ideas for using your $35 mini-computer. You can turn yourself into a Raspberry Pi hobbyist, just like me and other hardware hackers out there.

    Glastopf Pi is my very own DIY setup which maximizes Glastopf, a web application honeypot project lead by Lukas Rist a.k.a glaslos of the Honeynet Project. The Glastopf project started in the year 2009. It s a simple and minimalistic web server written in Python, that records information of web-based application attacks like Structured Query Language Injection (SQLI), Remote Code Execution (RCE), Local File Inclusion (LFI), Remote File Inclusion (RFI), and many more. It emulates web application vulnerabilities by tricking attackers or scanners into thinking that it s a vulnerable web server.

    Here are some snippets of the README file for this project, in order to understand this web application honeypot better:

    The adversaries usually use search engines and special crafted search requests to find their victims. In order to attract them, Glastopf provide those keywords (aka dork) and extracts them also from request and extends its attack surface automatically. So, over time and with a growing number of attacks, the honeypot gets more and more attractive. In the feature we will make the SQL injection emulator pubic, provide IP profiling for crawler recognition and intelligent dork selection.

    Kippo Pi is another honeypot setup which focuses on network forensics, SSH attacks and malware analysis.

    Kippo is a medium interaction SSH honeypot designed to log brute force attacks and, most importantly, the entire shell interaction performed by the attacker.

    Super Nintendo Pi is an emulation system that focuses on emulating SNES games. The enclosure is an SNES console, including the game controllers. This project is not limited to just playing SNES ROMS, but other ROMS as well. It s capable of emulating games from consoles such as Playstation, Amiga, Atari 2600, Final Burn Alpha, Sega Master System, Nintendo Entertainment System, MAME, NeoGeo, PC Engine / Turbo Grafx 16, ScummVMP, Game Boy Advance, Sinclair ZX Spectrum, Intellivision, and Game Boy Color.

    w3af Pi is a another setup which turns your Raspberry Pi into a network scanner and a vulnerability assessment tool in your pocket. It uses w3af, a known free and open source web vulnerability scanner. Carlos Pantelides s w3af setup on Raspberry Pi (http://seguridad-agile.blogspot.com/2013/05/w3af-on-raspberry-pi.html ) is very cool because it also uses the GPIO pins to turn on and off LEDs and it gives feedback in a head-less uncontrolled scan scenario.

    Coffee Table Pi is a project that transforms a Raspberry Pi into a video game arcade cabinet, specifically a cocktail or table cabinet. Aside from the setup detailed in instructables.com. it would be better if you install the RetroPie project so that you can play your favorite games from Playstation, SNES, NES, Amiga, Game Boy Color, and Game Boy Advance, among other platforms.

    FM Transmitter Pi / PiFM is another cool, innovative project that turns your Raspberry Pi into an FM Transmitter, which allows you to hack radio frequencies or manipulate the FM broadcasting system.     Raspberry Pi based Quadcopter

    Want quadcopter autopilot or flight controller powered by Raspberry Pi? It can be done! Dr. Gareth Owen has a complete setup tutorial guide on how to make your Raspberry Pi fly.

    According to Dr. Owen s setup, All custom code and hardware except the Pi. AVR (Arduino) microcontroller used as interface board for Pi, to read RC inputs and output motor control signals (over I2C bus). Real-time attitude control (stabilisation) and input processing is done on the Pi in C++. Stabilisation algorithm is two cascaded PIDs (per axis, six total), one for angular velocity (AV-PID) and one for absolute angle feeding into the AV PID. Orientation is sensed with an MPU6050 chip from Invensence (using on-board sensor fusion).

    He explains that the reason why he chose Raspberry Pi is because of its higher level processing, 3G connection, and web cam.

    Fish Pi is a project by Greg Holloway. The aim of it is to develop a Marine Unmanned Surface Vessel, which will ultimately be able to cross the Atlantic unaided, and take scientific measurements while doing so. Fish Pi is intended as an educational platform, a research station, or something to geek out to.

    According to its wiki page, The POCV will be battery powered, and only run the bare essentials needed to navigate the craft on a small body of water, a lake for example. The RPi will be tasked with running the Electronic Speed Controller (ESC) which in turn manages the electric motor, taking GPS positioning information and combining that with waypoint and route information to calculate the rudder commands to navigate the POCV to predetermined locations, and take photographs and or video during its test missions.

    Raspberry Pi as a Wardriving Tool

    I found a cool article from Spider Labs which talks about transforming a Raspberry Pi into a wardriving tool, titled Wardrive, Raspberry Pi Style! It s a really interesting project, because the author only used the following additional hardware: a RealTek USB WiFi adapter (with an RP-SMA connector for an external antenna), a mag mount WiFi Antenna with N or RP-SMA, a Global Positioning System receiver (GPS) compatible with GPSD (the author used a Garmin 60CSx over USB), a USB Hard drive power splitter cable for the WiFi Radio, and a NewTrent USB portable device charger (the author used a 12000mah version, YMMV).

    The Mocca Pi project started as Magnar Johnsen s idea of telnetting into a coffee machine and starting coffee production by just using a command.     Well, actually there are a lot of reasons why NOT to do it yourself. But there are probably more reasons to try to do it than there are reasons not to. The reasons not to DIY are some pretty good ones, such as no experience at it, no proper tools to do the job, no source material to consult for procedures, no extra time to commit to the project, a time constraint that might only be overcome if an experienced mechanic is paid to do it, and no courage to give it a try.

    But the reasons for giving it a go and maybe learning something along with it, are so much more rewarding if you have the time, and the tools, and the resources to consult (and the courage).

    Do it yourself, and save. That is the motto of the individualist, the adventurous, the bold. Why pay for someone else s training if you can do the task yourself and wind up with both the money you would have spent, and a healthy dose of that training, as well.

    There are lots of reasons why it might be a good idea to pay someone to do a job, especially if you have none of that bold, adventurous, individualist nature in you. But others will balk at spending the money without giving it a try for themselves first. That may be a wise choice in many situations, but you do have to consider that sometimes it behooves you to spend the money and have it done by someone who knows the ropes already.

    Your DIY auto repair might take two or three times as long to get finished as it would someone who has done the job many times before. But if time is not critical, you might try to tackle the job. If, on the other hand, you need the job done quickly and you have little or no direct experience with doing it yourself (or even watching it get done), then you may need to pay this time (and watch!).

    Many who are accustomed to the DIY attitude and lifestyle, have little problem tackling a new project, even though they have very limited experience in the field. And once you do dive into one or two initial projects in any area of work, the projects start to look a lot less intimidating. Change the oil, replace a few fuses, the wiper blades and a headlamp, and who knows? You might be ready to tackle that brake pad replacement.

    Do it yourself if you have just a little bit of courage, a dash of curiosity, and the desire to both learn something and save money at the same time. That s not a bad combination considering how much people are frequently willing to PAY to learn something new.

    No courage? No experience or time to spare? Then pay to have it done, and be back on the road in no time.     5 DIY Home Auto Repairs

    There aren’t enough sources, whether it’s via the Internet or in person, that encourage people to attempt to make some of their own auto repairs. To be clear, we’re not talking about any type of transmission repairs, any major engine repairs, electrical, etc. Those types of repairs are best left to a professional for a reason. They’re extremely complicated, dangerous (for certain repairs), and time consuming under the best of circumstances. That doesn’t tell the complete story of auto repair though. There are some repairs that can be done pretty easily at home, and will save you some money and time. When I say that these repairs will save you time, I mean that you don’t have to drive anywhere, you don’t have to wait around in a customer lounge for someone to get your car looked at, and finally to get it repaired and brought back to you.

    The saving money part is pretty straight forward as well. If you do the labor yourself, you won’t pay as much for that repair, and we can all agree on that. There is another money-saving aspect that can get overlooked in certain circumstances – the parts. Just about every repair shop that you can take your vehicle to will charge a markup on the parts they install on your car. I want to be completely fair to the repair shops on this; this is a common practice by pretty much the entire industry, and they deserve to mark those parts up to maintain a profit. My point with that is that you’ll pay less for the parts of any repairs you can do on your own. So here’s a list of 5 DIY auto repairs for you to consider. Be sure to check here for a list of tools that you’ll need to do these repairs.

    Note: there are more than 5 repairs that can be done at home. It will depend on your skill level and comfort with auto repair. These 5 are very basic and can be done by people with just about any skill level.

    1. Engine air filter and cabin air filter (if equipped) .

    Let’s start with one of the absolute basic, easiest repairs anyone can do. For almost all engines you can buy an air filter from the local auto parts store for $15 or less, and replace it in 10 minutes or so. The average price at the repair shop will be between $20 and this one is pretty harmless. If it’s not immediately evident where the air filter is, or how to get it out, a quick search on YouTube will show you how and what to do. The cabin air filter is something that not nearly enough people know about. This filter helps to clean the air that you breathe while inside of your vehicle. It will be mounted in the incoming air stream for the HVAC housing. Again, YouTube will provide a quick and easy answer to changing this. Most places I’ve seen charge close to $50 for this repair and you can buy the part for around $20. It will only take about 20-30 minutes to replace on your own, and could easily be less as some only take about 5 minutes.

    2. Throttle body cleaning.

    We’re going to follow the air intake process one step further up the line, and talk about a throttle body cleaning. The idea here is to remove the carbon buildup at the air inlet (throttle body) for your engine. This is almost always packaged as a part of a fuel system service that costs between $190 and $250. A can of throttle body cleaner will cost you about $15. You just remove the air tube that runs from your air filter box to the engine and you’ll see the throttle body right there. You’ll also see where the carbon buildup is. Be sure to read your owner’s manual to make sure your throttle body can be cleaned with a cleaning agent. A small percentage will have a coating on them that effectively prevents a carbon buildup, but it’s a pretty small percentage. As for the other parts of the fuel system service, they aren’t needed. There have been multiple studies that have shown that fuel tank additives to clean carbon from the valves cause more problems than they fix, and the same goes with pressurized fuel injector cleaners. If it’s not clogged, why clean it? The port on a fuel injector that sprays fuel is so small it’s barely visible. If a hole that small was clogged, believe me, you’d know about it.

    Now we’ll keep following the same flow into the engine. For the large majority of new vehicles, a tune-up consists only of replacing the spark plugs. On older vehicles, a tune-up consists of replacing the following: spark plugs, spark plug wires, distributor cap, and rotor. The second version of a tune-up that I’ve listed is a more complicated repair. Unless you’re pretty comfortable under the hood of your car, I recommend taking that to a professional. However, in the early 2000s, auto makers started using a secondary ignition (this is the system that has the spark plugs) that has a coil-on-plug design. That means there’s an ignition coil for each spark plug and they don’t need to be replaced unless they happen to malfunction. So a tune-up for most modern vehicles means just removing the ignition coil and replacing the spark plug underneath. Four-cylinder engines are very easy, while 6- and 8-cylinder engines can be a little more time-consuming. It all depends on the type of car you have. Again, YouTube will be your best friend for this. For reference, a 4-cylinder tune-up usually costs $115 and up, and spark plugs are about $3 each. The more cylinders you’ve got, the more expensive the repair, but the price of the spark plugs stays the same. You can see how you could save a good bit of money by doing this yourself. One quick note about the price of spark plugs – platinum-tipped plugs are more expensive. Those will cost around $12-$15 per plug, so make sure to factor that into your decision.

    This repair is surprisingly easier than most anyone would ever believe. You jack up the front of the vehicle, remove the tire, remove the caliper and/or mounting bracket that goes over the rotor, and then remove the rotor. Be sure to observe all proper safety precautions when jacking up the vehicle and removing any brake components, but it really is just as easy as the steps I’ve listed. Almost all repair shops will try to have you pay to have the rotors resurfaced. That hasn’t ever really made sense to me. If the rotors are warped, you’ll feel a brake pulsation when you apply the brakes. This is definitely a safety issue and resurfacing the rotors will take away the pulsation, but it’ll also take away some of the thickness of the rotor, which makes it easier for the same thing to happen again. It also adds to the labor the shop is charging in theory. Unfortunately, a lot of shops will charge you the same labor to replace the rotors as they will to resurface, and you pay a higher price for the rotors to boot. For a normal passenger car, you can buy front brake pads and 2 new rotors from the local parts store for $100 or less. At the repair shop, you’ll pay $220 and up for a front brake job that doesn’t include replacing the rotors. It will be somewhat time-consuming but should only take an hour or two out of your Saturday afternoon and potentially save you over $100.

    5. Rear differential service.

    This repair doesn’t apply to any front-wheel-drive vehicle; this is only for rear wheel drives. This is a very basic service that’s along the same lines as an oil change and transmission service. You remove the cover from the read differential and allow all of the fluid to drain out, replace the gasket or scrape off the old sealer and clean to be able to apply new sealer, install the cover and fill with fluid. If you do this service every 35,000-40,000 miles, it will greatly extend the life of your differential gears. This service for a basic rear wheel drive vehicle starts at $100 and easily goes up from there. The differential doesn’t hold much fluid, only 2.5-3.5 quarts when it’s completely full. You can buy 4 quarts of differential fluid for about $7 a quart and the sealer will cost you about $10-$15. The fluid may cost more if it’s synthetic fluid, but you’ll still come in under the $100 mark and save yourself some money.

    That’s the entirety of the list that I’ve got for you. You’ll notice I made one glaring omission from my list – an oil change! The reason I left this off of the list is because of the cost. All modern engines, and the vast majority of older engines, hold at least 5 quarts of oil. The standard price for a quart of oil is about $6. So you’ll pay $30 plus tax for enough oil to refill your engine, assuming you don’t have an engine that holds 6, 7, or even more, quarts of oil. All of that before you buy the oil filter — that will cost you about $10-$20. So if you go to the parts store and your engine has the cheapest oil change parts available, you’re going to pay about $40. Repair shops, especially dealerships, are always offering oil changes at greatly discounted prices. Sometimes as low as $18. They actually take a small financial loss on this repair, just to get you in the door and try to sell you other repairs when they do the free inspection. So, just take your vehicle to one of these places for an oil change and you’ll save yourself time and money, while having someone else do the work for you. It doesn’t get much better than that!

    This is primarily an issue with all Dual Zone climate control systems in the 1999 –

    These plastic doors (blend doors) are what determines how much heat and cool air
    you receive when you turn the temperature knob on the dash. If you turn the knob
    for hot air, they move up. If you turn the knob for cool air, they move down.

    These little doors are made of a cheap plastic that falls apart after a while allowing
    them to fall down in the cold air position. This causes the loss of temperature control

    The OEM factory made blend doors are cheap and prone to cracking. The little drive motors used to move them up and
    down are very strong and can put too much pressure on them causing them to crack, break and eventually fail. Once

    So why does it take so long, and more importantly – wheres that $1500.00 of your money going?

    Labor Charges! The dealerships and auto repair centers do things by the books and they have plenty of reason to.
    Lots and lots of labor when done their way.

    The dealerships rules require them to drop the steering column, remove the center console, evacuate the AC system,
    pull off the entire dash, drain out the vehicles coolant, disconnect the heater core and disassemble all of the heater box.
    That’s a ton of work and flag hours. That adds up to big bucks for them. That’s good for the ASE certified mechanics
    who are getting paid for all that work, but a huge pocket drain for the Jeep owner who has to dish out all that cash.

    Do you have the problem?

    To diagnose your Laredo MTC A/C System:

    There is no electronic diagnosis available for your Jeep .

    Physically check the operation of the blend doors by removing the glove box.

    Remove the blend door motor which is located to the side of the opening.

    The motor is held in place with two Phillips screws.

    Disconnect the wire harness and remove the motor.

    You will see the plastic axle that is connected to the
    blend door. There should be a limit pin on the white
    plastic axle.

    The failure occurs because this pin breaks, putting the
    force of the motor directly to the shaft of the blend
    doors. The cheap plastic shafts can not stand the force
    of the strong drive motor and eventually crack resulting
    in blend door failure. That equals a blocked heater
    core and loss of heat.

    Start the Jeep and turn on the AC.

    Manually switch between heat and AC by turning the axle left and right with your fingers. If there is no change
    between cold and hot while turning the white connector, your blend doors are broken and the JGCParts Heater

The best way to determine this is to check your car s owners manual, or you can consult your repair manual. You do have a repair manual, don t you? It s a must for do-it-yourself auto repair.

    If your car was manufactured after 1994, chances are you re in the R134 camp.

    If your car uses the older R12 refrigerant, you should take it to a repair shop and have it converted to the newer stuff so you can be in the cool again.

    Common DIY Auto Body Repair Supplies

    If you plan on starting a project car of any sort, you will most likely need auto body repair supplies. If you re an auto body professional, the list of supplies and tools you re going to need will be quite large. However, if you re someone who wants to get into project cars in their garage, the list will be much shorter. As the use of some of the more specialized tools requires extensive training. Below you will find a list of tools and supplies you will need, with brief descriptions of their use.

    The list of tools you ll need for doing minor body repairs to project cars includes all the tools you d normally need for doing the rest of the project. These include screwdrivers, wrenches, ratchets and sockets which you ll need for removing body parts or pieces to give yourself access to the area needing repair. Some of the other tools you ll need include:

    • Rotary or orbital sander to sand out rust and paint.
    • Hammer set-Different types of body repairs use different types of hammers. However, a general purpose ball peen hammer will suffice.
    • Body blocks-These are blocks of specially shaped wood or other materials that you use to soften blows to the body part with the hammer and to back up the side of the metal opposite the hammer.
    • Slide hammer-Also known as a dent puller, these are indispensible for puling dents out.

    Look at the scratch closely and run your hand over it. If the scratch can t be felt, it hasn t cut into the clear coat of paint. Get a mildly abrasive liquid rubbing compound and a clean microfiber towel. Apply the compound to the towel and rub the scratch back and forth across the scratch. Rub gently down the length of the scratch a few times, but concentrate more on moving across the scratch. This allows the compound to fill in the scratch and slowly break down the sharp edges that make up the scratch. Once you have done this for a few minutes, the scratch should be barely visible. Continue rubbing the compound across the scratch until it disappears completely.

    Once you are done, rub car polish over the area to bring out a shine, further reducing the appearance of the scratch. Do this by applying the polish with a cotton cloth and rubbing back and forth and in circular motions over the compounded area.

    Medium scratches can be felt by running your hand over them, but the scratch is not deep enough to reach the bare metal of the car s surface. This type of scratch goes into the clear coat paint, but not the base color paint. This requires no touch-up paint for repairing the scratch.

    Begin by using an abrasive liquid rubbing compound and a dual-action orbital polisher. Apply the liquid compound to the pad on the polisher and place it against the scratch. Move the polisher back and forth and in small circular motions over the scratch. Check often to see that the scratch is becoming lighter. Once the scratch has been removed, or mostly removed, apply car polish using the same steps a small scratch would use.

    Deep scratches cut through the paint to reveal bare metal. This type of scratch requires sanding, painting and polishing to repair it completely and correctly. Begin by lightly sanding the scratch across and length ways with 300-grit sandpaper. Once the scratch feels smooth, apply touch-up paint to cover the bare metal. Use a Q-tip or tooth pick to apply the paint. Using an applicator brush can cause the brush strokes to show. Build the paint up in the scratch so that it stands higher than the surrounding surface of the car. Allow the paint to dry for at least an hour before touching it. Sand the paint lightly with 800-grit sandpaper until it is smooth with the surrounding surface.

    Complete the repair by following the steps for a small scratch, using liquid compound and then car polish to bring the shine back to the sanded areas of the car.

    5 DIY Home Auto Repairs

    There aren’t enough sources, whether it’s via the Internet or in person, that encourage people to attempt to make some of their own auto repairs. To be clear, we’re not talking about any type of transmission repairs, any major engine repairs, electrical, etc. Those types of repairs are best left to a professional for a reason. They’re extremely complicated, dangerous (for certain repairs), and time consuming under the best of circumstances. That doesn’t tell the complete story of auto repair though. There are some repairs that can be done pretty easily at home, and will save you some money and time. When I say that these repairs will save you time, I mean that you don’t have to drive anywhere, you don’t have to wait around in a customer lounge for someone to get your car looked at, and finally to get it repaired and brought back to you.

    The saving money part is pretty straight forward as well. If you do the labor yourself, you won’t pay as much for that repair, and we can all agree on that. There is another money-saving aspect that can get overlooked in certain circumstances – the parts. Just about every repair shop that you can take your vehicle to will charge a markup on the parts they install on your car. I want to be completely fair to the repair shops on this; this is a common practice by pretty much the entire industry, and they deserve to mark those parts up to maintain a profit. My point with that is that you’ll pay less for the parts of any repairs you can do on your own. So here’s a list of 5 DIY auto repairs for you to consider. Be sure to check here for a list of tools that you’ll need to do these repairs.

    Note: there are more than 5 repairs that can be done at home. It will depend on your skill level and comfort with auto repair. These 5 are very basic and can be done by people with just about any skill level.

    1. Engine air filter and cabin air filter (if equipped) .

    Let’s start with one of the absolute basic, easiest repairs anyone can do. For almost all engines you can buy an air filter from the local auto parts store for $15 or less, and replace it in 10 minutes or so. The average price at the repair shop will be between $20 and this one is pretty harmless. If it’s not immediately evident where the air filter is, or how to get it out, a quick search on YouTube will show you how and what to do. The cabin air filter is something that not nearly enough people know about. This filter helps to clean the air that you breathe while inside of your vehicle. It will be mounted in the incoming air stream for the HVAC housing. Again, YouTube will provide a quick and easy answer to changing this. Most places I’ve seen charge close to $50 for this repair and you can buy the part for around $20. It will only take about 20-30 minutes to replace on your own, and could easily be less as some only take about 5 minutes.

    2. Throttle body cleaning.

    We’re going to follow the air intake process one step further up the line, and talk about a throttle body cleaning. The idea here is to remove the carbon buildup at the air inlet (throttle body) for your engine. This is almost always packaged as a part of a fuel system service that costs between $190 and $250. A can of throttle body cleaner will cost you about $15. You just remove the air tube that runs from your air filter box to the engine and you’ll see the throttle body right there. You’ll also see where the carbon buildup is. Be sure to read your owner’s manual to make sure your throttle body can be cleaned with a cleaning agent. A small percentage will have a coating on them that effectively prevents a carbon buildup, but it’s a pretty small percentage. As for the other parts of the fuel system service, they aren’t needed. There have been multiple studies that have shown that fuel tank additives to clean carbon from the valves cause more problems than they fix, and the same goes with pressurized fuel injector cleaners. If it’s not clogged, why clean it? The port on a fuel injector that sprays fuel is so small it’s barely visible. If a hole that small was clogged, believe me, you’d know about it.

    Now we’ll keep following the same flow into the engine. For the large majority of new vehicles, a tune-up consists only of replacing the spark plugs. On older vehicles, a tune-up consists of replacing the following: spark plugs, spark plug wires, distributor cap, and rotor. The second version of a tune-up that I’ve listed is a more complicated repair. Unless you’re pretty comfortable under the hood of your car, I recommend taking that to a professional. However, in the early 2000s, auto makers started using a secondary ignition (this is the system that has the spark plugs) that has a coil-on-plug design. That means there’s an ignition coil for each spark plug and they don’t need to be replaced unless they happen to malfunction. So a tune-up for most modern vehicles means just removing the ignition coil and replacing the spark plug underneath. Four-cylinder engines are very easy, while 6- and 8-cylinder engines can be a little more time-consuming. It all depends on the type of car you have. Again, YouTube will be your best friend for this. For reference, a 4-cylinder tune-up usually costs $115 and up, and spark plugs are about $3 each. The more cylinders you’ve got, the more expensive the repair, but the price of the spark plugs stays the same. You can see how you could save a good bit of money by doing this yourself. One quick note about the price of spark plugs – platinum-tipped plugs are more expensive. Those will cost around $12-$15 per plug, so make sure to factor that into your decision.

    This repair is surprisingly easier than most anyone would ever believe. You jack up the front of the vehicle, remove the tire, remove the caliper and/or mounting bracket that goes over the rotor, and then remove the rotor. Be sure to observe all proper safety precautions when jacking up the vehicle and removing any brake components, but it really is just as easy as the steps I’ve listed. Almost all repair shops will try to have you pay to have the rotors resurfaced. That hasn’t ever really made sense to me. If the rotors are warped, you’ll feel a brake pulsation when you apply the brakes. This is definitely a safety issue and resurfacing the rotors will take away the pulsation, but it’ll also take away some of the thickness of the rotor, which makes it easier for the same thing to happen again. It also adds to the labor the shop is charging in theory. Unfortunately, a lot of shops will charge you the same labor to replace the rotors as they will to resurface, and you pay a higher price for the rotors to boot. For a normal passenger car, you can buy front brake pads and 2 new rotors from the local parts store for $100 or less. At the repair shop, you’ll pay $220 and up for a front brake job that doesn’t include replacing the rotors. It will be somewhat time-consuming but should only take an hour or two out of your Saturday afternoon and potentially save you over $100.

    5. Rear differential service.

    This repair doesn’t apply to any front-wheel-drive vehicle; this is only for rear wheel drives. This is a very basic service that’s along the same lines as an oil change and transmission service. You remove the cover from the read differential and allow all of the fluid to drain out, replace the gasket or scrape off the old sealer and clean to be able to apply new sealer, install the cover and fill with fluid. If you do this service every 35,000-40,000 miles, it will greatly extend the life of your differential gears. This service for a basic rear wheel drive vehicle starts at $100 and easily goes up from there. The differential doesn’t hold much fluid, only 2.5-3.5 quarts when it’s completely full. You can buy 4 quarts of differential fluid for about $7 a quart and the sealer will cost you about $10-$15. The fluid may cost more if it’s synthetic fluid, but you’ll still come in under the $100 mark and save yourself some money.

    That’s the entirety of the list that I’ve got for you. You’ll notice I made one glaring omission from my list – an oil change! The reason I left this off of the list is because of the cost. All modern engines, and the vast majority of older engines, hold at least 5 quarts of oil. The standard price for a quart of oil is about $6. So you’ll pay $30 plus tax for enough oil to refill your engine, assuming you don’t have an engine that holds 6, 7, or even more, quarts of oil. All of that before you buy the oil filter — that will cost you about $10-$20. So if you go to the parts store and your engine has the cheapest oil change parts available, you’re going to pay about $40. Repair shops, especially dealerships, are always offering oil changes at greatly discounted prices. Sometimes as low as $18. They actually take a small financial loss on this repair, just to get you in the door and try to sell you other repairs when they do the free inspection. So, just take your vehicle to one of these places for an oil change and you’ll save yourself time and money, while having someone else do the work for you. It doesn’t get much better than that!

    The list of tools you ll need for doing minor body repairs to project cars includes all the tools you d normally need for doing the rest of the project.     Do it yourself and save a few bucks. Why not?

    Well, actually there are a lot of reasons why NOT to do it yourself. But there are probably more reasons to try to do it than there are reasons not to. The reasons not to DIY are some pretty good ones, such as no experience at it, no proper tools to do the job, no source material to consult for procedures, no extra time to commit to the project, a time constraint that might only be overcome if an experienced mechanic is paid to do it, and no courage to give it a try.

    But the reasons for giving it a go and maybe learning something along with it, are so much more rewarding if you have the time, and the tools, and the resources to consult (and the courage).

    DIY Auto Repair is committed to giving you the resources you need to do the job yourself. The courage is up to you, but the time spent can be cut down if you just practice doing some of these things yourself instead of timidly paying through the nose for someone else to do it for you, over and over again.

    The DIY tune-up is one of the most basic projects, but not the simplest one to tackle if it is your first DIY attempt. Start with tire changing, battery installation, wiper blades, oil change, and headlamps. Most people move past those projects pretty quickly, and are ready for more. That s the key to this whole thing. Build your courage by doing some of the simpler jobs first. Then you can move on to a brake job or a tune-up.

    Car tuning is something that has been associated with a high degree of skill, but much of the skill required to do this has been abandoned to the ages by modern advancement in engine design. There are no carburators to adjust on today s engines, which removes one of the most challenging tasks from car tuning.

    That brake job is easier today, too, since so many cars now use disk brakes instead of drums. Those drums were a bit intimidating what with all those springs and small parts to stick back together once you got it all disassembled and the new shoes in place. Disks are a lot easier to work on, with less to remember, and fewer pieces to mess with.

    Here we have assembled some of the key components to a proper DIY setting, including the books you will need, and the suppliers where you can get those necessary replacement parts.

    DIY Auto Repair: Why Do It Yourself?

    Do it yourself, and save. That is the motto of the individualist, the adventurous, the bold. Why pay for someone else s training if you can do the task yourself and wind up with both the money you would have spent, and a healthy dose of that training, as well.

    There are lots of reasons why it might be a good idea to pay someone to do a job, especially if you have none of that bold, adventurous, individualist nature in you. But others will balk at spending the money without giving it a try for themselves first. That may be a wise choice in many situations, but you do have to consider that sometimes it behooves you to spend the money and have it done by someone who knows the ropes already.

    Your DIY auto repair might take two or three times as long to get finished as it would someone who has done the job many times before. But if time is not critical, you might try to tackle the job. If, on the other hand, you need the job done quickly and you have little or no direct experience with doing it yourself (or even watching it get done), then you may need to pay this time (and watch!).

    Many who are accustomed to the DIY attitude and lifestyle, have little problem tackling a new project, even though they have very limited experience in the field. And once you do dive into one or two initial projects in any area of work, the projects start to look a lot less intimidating. Change the oil, replace a few fuses, the wiper blades and a headlamp, and who knows? You might be ready to tackle that brake pad replacement.

    Do it yourself if you have just a little bit of courage, a dash of curiosity, and the desire to both learn something and save money at the same time. That s not a bad combination considering how much people are frequently willing to PAY to learn something new.

    No courage? No experience or time to spare? Then pay to have it done, and be back on the road in no time. But remember: at some point it might behoove you to learn some of these tasks for yourself. It s not just about saving money. There is a certain satisfaction you can get from doing it yourself.

    Look at the scratch closely and run your hand over it. If the scratch can t be felt, it hasn t cut into the clear coat of paint. Get a mildly abrasive liquid rubbing compound and a clean microfiber towel. Apply the compound to the towel and rub the scratch back and forth across the scratch. Rub gently down the length of the scratch a few times, but concentrate more on moving across the scratch. This allows the compound to fill in the scratch and slowly break down the sharp edges that make up the scratch. Once you have done this for a few minutes, the scratch should be barely visible. Continue rubbing the compound across the scratch until it disappears completely.

    Once you are done, rub car polish over the area to bring out a shine, further reducing the appearance of the scratch. Do this by applying the polish with a cotton cloth and rubbing back and forth and in circular motions over the compounded area.

    Medium scratches can be felt by running your hand over them, but the scratch is not deep enough to reach the bare metal of the car s surface. This type of scratch goes into the clear coat paint, but not the base color paint. This requires no touch-up paint for repairing the scratch.

    Begin by using an abrasive liquid rubbing compound and a dual-action orbital polisher. Apply the liquid compound to the pad on the polisher and place it against the scratch. Move the polisher back and forth and in small circular motions over the scratch. Check often to see that the scratch is becoming lighter. Once the scratch has been removed, or mostly removed, apply car polish using the same steps a small scratch would use.

    Deep scratches cut through the paint to reveal bare metal. This type of scratch requires sanding, painting and polishing to repair it completely and correctly. Begin by lightly sanding the scratch across and length ways with 300-grit sandpaper. Once the scratch feels smooth, apply touch-up paint to cover the bare metal. Use a Q-tip or tooth pick to apply the paint. Using an applicator brush can cause the brush strokes to show. Build the paint up in the scratch so that it stands higher than the surrounding surface of the car. Allow the paint to dry for at least an hour before touching it. Sand the paint lightly with 800-grit sandpaper until it is smooth with the surrounding surface.

    Complete the repair by following the steps for a small scratch, using liquid compound and then car polish to bring the shine back to the sanded areas of the car.

    5 DIY Home Auto Repairs

    There aren’t enough sources, whether it’s via the Internet or in person, that encourage people to attempt to make some of their own auto repairs. To be clear, we’re not talking about any type of transmission repairs, any major engine repairs, electrical, etc. Those types of repairs are best left to a professional for a reason. They’re extremely complicated, dangerous (for certain repairs), and time consuming under the best of circumstances. That doesn’t tell the complete story of auto repair though. There are some repairs that can be done pretty easily at home, and will save you some money and time. When I say that these repairs will save you time, I mean that you don’t have to drive anywhere, you don’t have to wait around in a customer lounge for someone to get your car looked at, and finally to get it repaired and brought back to you.

    The saving money part is pretty straight forward as well. If you do the labor yourself, you won’t pay as much for that repair, and we can all agree on that. There is another money-saving aspect that can get overlooked in certain circumstances – the parts. Just about every repair shop that you can take your vehicle to will charge a markup on the parts they install on your car. I want to be completely fair to the repair shops on this; this is a common practice by pretty much the entire industry, and they deserve to mark those parts up to maintain a profit. My point with that is that you’ll pay less for the parts of any repairs you can do on your own. So here’s a list of 5 DIY auto repairs for you to consider. Be sure to check here for a list of tools that you’ll need to do these repairs.

    Note: there are more than 5 repairs that can be done at home. It will depend on your skill level and comfort with auto repair. These 5 are very basic and can be done by people with just about any skill level.

    1. Engine air filter and cabin air filter (if equipped) .

    Let’s start with one of the absolute basic, easiest repairs anyone can do. For almost all engines you can buy an air filter from the local auto parts store for $15 or less, and replace it in 10 minutes or so. The average price at the repair shop will be between $20 and this one is pretty harmless. If it’s not immediately evident where the air filter is, or how to get it out, a quick search on YouTube will show you how and what to do. The cabin air filter is something that not nearly enough people know about. This filter helps to clean the air that you breathe while inside of your vehicle. It will be mounted in the incoming air stream for the HVAC housing. Again, YouTube will provide a quick and easy answer to changing this. Most places I’ve seen charge close to $50 for this repair and you can buy the part for around $20. It will only take about 20-30 minutes to replace on your own, and could easily be less as some only take about 5 minutes.

    2. Throttle body cleaning.

    We’re going to follow the air intake process one step further up the line, and talk about a throttle body cleaning. The idea here is to remove the carbon buildup at the air inlet (throttle body) for your engine. This is almost always packaged as a part of a fuel system service that costs between $190 and $250. A can of throttle body cleaner will cost you about $15. You just remove the air tube that runs from your air filter box to the engine and you’ll see the throttle body right there. You’ll also see where the carbon buildup is. Be sure to read your owner’s manual to make sure your throttle body can be cleaned with a cleaning agent. A small percentage will have a coating on them that effectively prevents a carbon buildup, but it’s a pretty small percentage. As for the other parts of the fuel system service, they aren’t needed. There have been multiple studies that have shown that fuel tank additives to clean carbon from the valves cause more problems than they fix, and the same goes with pressurized fuel injector cleaners. If it’s not clogged, why clean it? The port on a fuel injector that sprays fuel is so small it’s barely visible. If a hole that small was clogged, believe me, you’d know about it.

    Now we’ll keep following the same flow into the engine. For the large majority of new vehicles, a tune-up consists only of replacing the spark plugs. On older vehicles, a tune-up consists of replacing the following: spark plugs, spark plug wires, distributor cap, and rotor. The second version of a tune-up that I’ve listed is a more complicated repair. Unless you’re pretty comfortable under the hood of your car, I recommend taking that to a professional. However, in the early 2000s, auto makers started using a secondary ignition (this is the system that has the spark plugs) that has a coil-on-plug design. That means there’s an ignition coil for each spark plug and they don’t need to be replaced unless they happen to malfunction. So a tune-up for most modern vehicles means just removing the ignition coil and replacing the spark plug underneath. Four-cylinder engines are very easy, while 6- and 8-cylinder engines can be a little more time-consuming. It all depends on the type of car you have. Again, YouTube will be your best friend for this. For reference, a 4-cylinder tune-up usually costs $115 and up, and spark plugs are about $3 each. The more cylinders you’ve got, the more expensive the repair, but the price of the spark plugs stays the same. You can see how you could save a good bit of money by doing this yourself. One quick note about the price of spark plugs – platinum-tipped plugs are more expensive. Those will cost around $12-$15 per plug, so make sure to factor that into your decision.

    This repair is surprisingly easier than most anyone would ever believe. You jack up the front of the vehicle, remove the tire, remove the caliper and/or mounting bracket that goes over the rotor, and then remove the rotor. Be sure to observe all proper safety precautions when jacking up the vehicle and removing any brake components, but it really is just as easy as the steps I’ve listed. Almost all repair shops will try to have you pay to have the rotors resurfaced. That hasn’t ever really made sense to me. If the rotors are warped, you’ll feel a brake pulsation when you apply the brakes. This is definitely a safety issue and resurfacing the rotors will take away the pulsation, but it’ll also take away some of the thickness of the rotor, which makes it easier for the same thing to happen again. It also adds to the labor the shop is charging in theory. Unfortunately, a lot of shops will charge you the same labor to replace the rotors as they will to resurface, and you pay a higher price for the rotors to boot. For a normal passenger car, you can buy front brake pads and 2 new rotors from the local parts store for $100 or less. At the repair shop, you’ll pay $220 and up for a front brake job that doesn’t include replacing the rotors. It will be somewhat time-consuming but should only take an hour or two out of your Saturday afternoon and potentially save you over $100.

    5. Rear differential service.

    This repair doesn’t apply to any front-wheel-drive vehicle; this is only for rear wheel drives. This is a very basic service that’s along the same lines as an oil change and transmission service. You remove the cover from the read differential and allow all of the fluid to drain out, replace the gasket or scrape off the old sealer and clean to be able to apply new sealer, install the cover and fill with fluid. If you do this service every 35,000-40,000 miles, it will greatly extend the life of your differential gears. This service for a basic rear wheel drive vehicle starts at $100 and easily goes up from there. The differential doesn’t hold much fluid, only 2.5-3.5 quarts when it’s completely full. You can buy 4 quarts of differential fluid for about $7 a quart and the sealer will cost you about $10-$15. The fluid may cost more if it’s synthetic fluid, but you’ll still come in under the $100 mark and save yourself some money.

    That’s the entirety of the list that I’ve got for you. You’ll notice I made one glaring omission from my list – an oil change! The reason I left this off of the list is because of the cost. All modern engines, and the vast majority of older engines, hold at least 5 quarts of oil. The standard price for a quart of oil is about $6. So you’ll pay $30 plus tax for enough oil to refill your engine, assuming you don’t have an engine that holds 6, 7, or even more, quarts of oil. All of that before you buy the oil filter — that will cost you about $10-$20. So if you go to the parts store and your engine has the cheapest oil change parts available, you’re going to pay about $40. Repair shops, especially dealerships, are always offering oil changes at greatly discounted prices. Sometimes as low as $18. They actually take a small financial loss on this repair, just to get you in the door and try to sell you other repairs when they do the free inspection. So, just take your vehicle to one of these places for an oil change and you’ll save yourself time and money, while having someone else do the work for you. It doesn’t get much better than that!

    This page contains auto scanner reviews of code scanners I personally own like the pocket scan on the right or have used a lot. My first review will be of the Actron 9125. This thing is a very basic unit with only two buttons.

    It reads and erases codes and resets the check engine light. However, the drawback is, it doesn’t have on screen code definitions. I use to recommend the 9410 for the most basic scan tool. The pocket scan is basically the same reader without an urgency indicator feature. If you need a reliable way to connect a vehicle, read trouble codes and turn off the check engine light then you’ll be happy with the Actron CP9125.

    It is small enough to store in the glove box. This is handy when the light comes on as you’re sitting in the smog inspection line. Since this automotive code reader has no on-screen code definitions, you’ll have a few extra steps.

    The PocketScan comes with an instruction manual that includes the code definitions. You write the code down and then look it up to find out exactly what it means. The newer models actually come with a CD type instruction manual. This adds even more steps to finding the definition.

    I liked when it shipped with the paper manual. This way you could bring it over to the car. Nevertheless, the unit is perfect for someone who wants to read and erase codes and isn’t interested in reading the data stream. For a few dollars more see the review of the 9550 scan tool. It has on-screen code definitions and more functions.

    Auto Scanner Reviews Good

    The Actron 9550 was one of the best selling code scanners on the Internet at the time of this writing. The reason being is that it is easy to use and has a few advanced features that may be useful in diagnosing and repairing check engine lights on cars. It can read and erase codes while providing the definition of the stored code right on the screen.

    The automotive scanner is also capable of taking a snapshot of the data stream that can be reviewed off the car. With the CP9550 OBD-II Auto Scan Tool You can also view the status of your cars inspection and maintenance monitors. Some states use similar technology for testing the emission system.

    This is critical for mandated emission tests or smog inspections. The cp9550 interfaces with OBD-II vehicles only. It will not work on 1995 or older cars. These code scanners are C.A.N. capable. Which stands for controlled area network. I believe this protocol is mandatory on all vehicles from 2007 Up to present day.

    It works on 2015 models so you don’t have to worry about obsolescence any time soon. The price and over-all usability makes this unit my recommendation for the beginner to intermediate DIY driveway mechanic. Never heard of Actron? They have a 40-year history as a division of SPX a giant in automotive test equipment.

    Common DIY Auto Body Repair Supplies

    If you plan on starting a project car of any sort, you will most likely need auto body repair supplies. If you re an auto body professional, the list of supplies and tools you re going to need will be quite large. However, if you re someone who wants to get into project cars in their garage, the list will be much shorter. As the use of some of the more specialized tools requires extensive training. Below you will find a list of tools and supplies you will need, with brief descriptions of their use.

    The list of tools you ll need for doing minor body repairs to project cars includes all the tools you d normally need for doing the rest of the project. These include screwdrivers, wrenches, ratchets and sockets which you ll need for removing body parts or pieces to give yourself access to the area needing repair. Some of the other tools you ll need include:

    • Rotary or orbital sander to sand out rust and paint.
    • Hammer set-Different types of body repairs use different types of hammers. However, a general purpose ball peen hammer will suffice.
    • Body blocks-These are blocks of specially shaped wood or other materials that you use to soften blows to the body part with the hammer and to back up the side of the metal opposite the hammer.
    • Slide hammer-Also known as a dent puller, these are indispensible for puling dents out.

    No body repair can be accomplished completely with tools such as hammers and sanders. There will occasionally be times where you ll need to finish a repair by the use of fillers. Some of the supplies that you ll need will include the following:

    • Sanding blocks-Used for fine sanding of flat body panels.
    • Sanding pads-These you ll need for the rotary or orbital sander for larger areas.
    • Body filler-This is referred to as Bond-O and is used to fill imperfections in your hammered or pulled repair.
    • Gloves-You will need impermeable gloves for handling some of the chemicals you ll be using.
    • Respirator-You will need at least air masks to keep the dust from sanding out of your lungs. Bondo-O can damage your lungs severely if inhaled in quantity.
    • Safety glasses-If you buy the right respirator, these will be built in. If not, you need something to protect your eyes.
    • Rust blocker-This is a chemical that either transforms rust into a material that will accept paint and block further rusting. The best product is called Rust Mort. When applied, it converts rust into a polymer that will accept paint and stops the rust from continuing to ruin the metal. This is indispensable when working on older cars.
    • Shop rags-You ll need a good supply of these to clean up messes and spills.
    • Drop cloth-This will protect the floor or ground in your work area from spills and such.

    Before you set out to recharge your car s air conditioning system, you need to be sure your car uses the newer R134 (not the older R12 refrigerant).
