Driving Tips Around Schools: Keeping Children Safe

Parents and caregivers who drive on campus and in neighborhoods near school can play an important role in enhancing safety near schools by following safe driving practices. At arrival and dismissal times, drivers are often in a hurry and distracted which can lead to unsafe conditions for students and others walking, bicycling and driving in the area.

Drivers should always:

· Slow down and obey all traffic laws and speed limits, both in school zones and in neighborhoods surrounding the school.

· Comply with local school drop-off and pick-up procedures for the safety of all children accessing the school.

· Avoid double parking or stopping on crosswalks to let children out of the car. Double parking will block visibility for other children and other motorists. Visibility is further reduced during the rain and fog seasons when condensation forms on car windows.

· Avoid loading or unloading children at locations across the street from the school. This forces youngsters to unnecessarily cross busy streets—often mid-block rather than at a crosswalk.

· Prepare to stop for a school bus when overhead yellow lights are flashing. Drive with caution when you see yellow hazard warning lights are flashing on a moving or stopped bus.

· Stop for a school bus with its red overhead lights flashing, regardless of the direction from which the driver is approaching. Drivers must not proceed until the school bus resumes motion and the red lights stop flashing, or until signaled by the school bus driver to proceed.

· Watch for children walking or bicycling (both on the road and the sidewalk) in areas near a school.

· Watch for children playing and gathering near bus stops. Watch for children arriving late for the bus, who may dart into the street without looking for traffic.

· Watch for children walking or biking to school when backing up (out of a driveway or leaving a garage ).

Students being picked up by car will be waiting in the south parking lot by the gym. There will be adults helping to load students into cars. Students that are walking home will exit the building through the front doors of the building and meet anyone they are walking with in the north parking lot. The north parking lot will be closed to cars in the afternoon to insure the safety of our students and families that are walking. All students must be picked up within 15 minutes of dismissal.

Please try to keep your pick-up routine consistent so your students know where they are to go at the end of the day. Please drive carefully and be patient as we are dismissing a lot of students and trying to get everyone home safely.

Schools

The Austin Independent School District (AISD) is the fifth largest school district in Texas, and serves approximately 83,593 students at 130 schools. We are a diverse, urban district that is making great progress in student academic achievement. A study commissioned by the Austin Chamber of Commerce concluded “Austin’s public schools are comparable, if not superior to, the benchmarked cities of Denver, Phoenix, Raleigh-Durham and Seattle.” Unlike many urban school districts in the U.S. today, AISD has a richly diverse student community. It includes children from all economic levels and all kinds of backgrounds. Also unlike many other urban school districts, AISD enjoys widespread community support. We also support families that represent more than 94 languages, and we teach seven languages other than English in our schools, including Chinese, Japanese, and American Sign Language.

Sixty percent of our students are Hispanic, 26 percent are White (not of Hispanic origin), 8 percent are Black (not of Hispanic origin), and 3 percent are Asian/Pacific Islander. Over 52 percent our students come from low-income families, and 25 percent enter our schools as English-Language Learners.

The Austin School District understands that parents want choice. That’s why we offer a variety of instructional programs devoted to your child’s unique needs, talents, and interests. Committed to preparing students for the challenges and opportunities of the 21st Century, we invite you to discover the specialized programs of our magnet schools and focus academies.

Thank you for choosing AISD.

Employment and Labor

Security Clearance

Security clearances are an increasingly important requirement for federal government employees, employees of government contractors, military personnel and even private sector employees. Security clearance guidelines and standards over the past 10 years have changed, and the number of individuals who require access to sensitive or classified information has significantly increased. In addition, the federal government has required employees who already have security clearances to upgrade their security clearance levels. The process of obtaining, retaining and upgrading a security clearance over the last several years has become more complex due to the security concerns of the United States Government. Our firm serves as security clearance lawyers for individuals encountering difficulties or questions in the security clearance process. We belong to the Security Clearance Lawyers Association.

Security Clearance Application Process

All employees whose positions require access to sensitive information or restricted areas are required to complete an application form known as the Standard Form 86 Questionnaire for National Security Positions (SF-86) or Electronic Questionnaires for Investigations Processing (e-QIP ). Providing information in the SF-86 or e-QIP is voluntary; however, completing the form truthfully is critical to the process of successfully obtaining a security clearance. Once a security clearance application is completed, it is generally submitted to the Defense Security Service (DSS), the individual federal agency s security clearance review office, or the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) for a review and determination.

Public Trust/Suitability Investigations

Federal employment positions often include important duties that do not require a security clearance but are sensitive in nature. For instance, included in public trust positions are certain types of federal police officers, comptrollers, and public safety and health workers. These positions are referred to as public trust positions. They are subject to background investigations, which include a National Agency Check and Inquiries (NACI) review, and potential personal interview and reference checks.

Our law firm also represents and advises individuals in the related area of suitability and public trust positions, which derive from an individual s completion of the SF-85 (Questionnaire for Non-Sensitive Positions) and SF-85P (Questionnaire for Public Trust Positions).

Security Clearance Investigations

The U.S. Government conducts background investigations and reinvestigations of individuals under consideration for a security clearance or for the retention of their security clearance in national security positions. Applying for a security clearance requires an employee to undergo a comprehensive background investigation into all aspects of his or her personal and professional history. The investigation includes interviewing the applicant, checking state and federal criminal databases, and interviewing other persons. An employee’s full cooperation with all aspects of the investigation is a requirement in order for him or her to obtain a security clearance.

If a federal employee or government contractor employee’s initial application is denied, or his or her existing security clearance is revoked or suspended, he or she will be issued a Statement of Reasons (SOR) or will be provided a notice which outlines the reasons why the security clearance was not granted or continued. When the Defense Security Service (DSS), the individual s federal agency security office, or the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) denies an employee’s security clearance, there are procedures or provisions that allow the employee or government contractor employee to appeal the decision, such as a hearing (often referred to as a personal appearance) before the employing agency or the Defense Office of Hearings and Appeals (DOHA) to adjudicate his or her security clearance matter.

Federal employees have the right to appear in person before an administrative judge in a hearing (or other clearance adjudicator) and respond to the allegations in the SOR. Following such a hearing or personal appearance, the administrative judge or adjudicator will issue a recommended decision to the federal agency s personnel security appeals board (PSAB), which will issue the final determination on the federal employee s security clearance. Government contractor employees in DoD cases have the right to a hearing before a DOHA judge. In cases involving DoD government contractors, the administrative judge will issue the initial ruling as to whether the security clearance is granted. A contractor then has a right to appeal an adverse decision to the DOHA Appeal Board.

Intelligence Agency Security Clearance Holders

Our firm represents security clearance holders and applicants before federal intelligence agencies, governed by Intelligence Community Directive 703 and Intelligence Community Policy Guidance 704.2 such as the National Security Agency (NSA), Central Intelligency Agency (CIA), National Reconnaissance Office (NRO), National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency (NGA), the Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA) and others.

Berry Berry, PLLC are security clearance attorneys that handle federal employee and federal contractor security clearance and public trust matters throughout the United States.

Our experienced attorneys have assisted numerous federal government employees, military personnel, and government contractors in all stages of the security clearance process by providing legal advice or representation. In addition, our attorneys are familiar with the significant differences between individuals seeking security clearances for use as federal employees and individuals seeking security clearances for use as federal government contractors (i.e. industrial security clearances under Executive Order 10865 and Department of Defense Directive 5220.6).

Our attorneys can advise employees on areas of the SF-86, e-Qip or other related security clearance documentation that require additional care and attention. Our attorneys can also provide advice or guidance in the application, interview and polygraph processes for any security clearance levels such as the following:

  • Confidential, Secret or Top Secret
  • Sensitive Compartmented Information (SCI)
  • Special Access Programs (SAP)

If a security clearance is denied, our experienced attorneys can represent the employee through the appeal process before the DOHA, the DSS or the federal agency processing the clearance. It is important that an employee takes the appeal process very seriously as the inability to obtain, maintain or upgrade a security clearance at the appellate stages can mean the loss of his or her position.

Please contact Berry Berry, PLLC to schedule a consultation with a security clearance attorney if you are submitting an initial security clearance application (SF-86), undergoing a background investigation, or having your security clearance denied or revoked.

Filing Chapter 7 Bankruptcy in Illinois: What You Need to Know #northern #district #of #illinois #bankruptcy

#

The Bankruptcy Process in Chicago is Different Than Other Cities

Are you considering filing for bankruptcy in the Chicago area? Don t assume that the process will be little more than filling out some boilerplate forms. Many people mistakenly believe that filing for bankruptcy is the same throughout the country. While there is uniformity to the process based on the fact that the bankruptcy code is federal law, the process can vary greatly by state. Filing for bankruptcy in Illinois is much different than filing in Texas. This is the case because state law has a big impact on the type and amount of property you can keep. Each state. as well as the federal government, has enacted exemption laws that designate certain types of property as off limits to creditors. Creditors cannot take your exempt property regardless of how much you owe them. The same principle applies in bankruptcy. The bankruptcy trustee cannot take your exempt property. In fact, most people who file Chapter 7 bankruptcy are pleasantly surprised to learn that all of their property is exempt.

Illinois Bankruptcy Exemptions

Illinois is what is known as an opt out state, meaning federal exemptions are not available to Illinois debtors. If you re filing bankruptcy in Illinois, you ll need to use Illinois exemptions. Be aware that a recent move can impact the laws that apply to your bankruptcy case. For example, if you ve just moved to Chicago for a job, your previous state s laws may apply. For more information, see this post: Moving and Bankruptcy Law. If you ve lived in Illinois for more than two years, the IL state bankruptcy exemptions will apply to your case. Be prepared, they re not overly generous. Illinois debtors are permitted to protect up to $15,000 of equity in their primary residence. Married couples filing jointly can double the exemption to $30,000. Be aware that homestead exemptions only serve to protect the home where you live, investment property does not qualify. In addition to the homestead exemption, debtors filing bankruptcy in Illinois can protect up to $2,400 of equity in a car. For a complete updated list of the Illinois state bankruptcy exemptions, take a look at www.legalconsumer.com .

Will I Qualify for Bankruptcy in Illinois?

Much has been written about the bankruptcy reforms of 2005. Suffice to say that most bankruptcy lawyers think the legislation, known as the Bankruptcy Abuse Prevention and Consumer Protection Act (BAPCPA) is awful. One of their main complaints is the bankruptcy means test. The means test was put in place to make it more difficult for consumers to file Chapter 7 bankruptcy. If your income is above the median for a household of similar size in your state, you must compare your expenses against the means test. If your disposable income is too high, there is a presumption that you must be in a Chapter 13 plan, where something is paid back to your unsecured creditors, rather than a chapter 7 where nothing is paid back. In Illinois, the average income for a single household is $46,983. If your income, measured over the last six months, is lower than $46,983, you re presumptively entitled to file Chapter 7 bankruptcy. If your income is higher, you ll need to work through the means test with an attorney to see whether you qualify. For a complete list of current income figures for households of all sizes, visit this site .

How Much Will It Cost to File Bankruptcy in Illinois?

Just as every bankruptcy case is a little different, the cost of bankruptcy in each jurisdiction is different. Obviously, filing a Chapter 7 case in Chicago will be more expensive than filing in a more rural area of southern Illinois. As a general rule, Chapter 7 bankruptcy costs approximately $1,500. Regardless of jurisdiction, the bankruptcy court charges a $306 filing fee. Add to that the cost of a lawyer which can range from $1,000 to $2,000. If you end up filing for Chapter 13 bankruptcy, the costs are set by the court and are therefore more standardized. $3,000 is the national average to file chapter 13, plus a filing fee of $274. If you re concerned about being able to afford bankruptcy, don t be. Most bankruptcy law firms will work with their clients to establish a payment schedule they can afford.

Where Are The Bankruptcy Courts Located in Illinois?

There are three federal districts in Illinois, the northern, southern and central districts. Within each federal district are divisional courthouses. To better serve local communities, there is typically a bankruptcy court in each federal divisional courthouse. The division you file your case in will determine where your 341 meeting of creditors will be held. We ve listed the locations of the Illinois bankruptcy courts below:

Northern District of Illinois

Locations: Chicago, Joilet North, Aurora, Rockford, Waukegan, Wheaton. The official website for the Northern District of Illinois Bankruptcy Court can be viewed here.

Central District of Illinois

Locations: Bloomington, Dansville Decatur, Galesburg, Kankakee Paris, Peoria Quincy, Rock Island, Springfield. The official website for the Central District of Illinois Bankruptcy Court can be viewed here .

The auto show is simply not the show that it was pre-recession.  While it used to fill the entire convention centre along with the *Skydome* (Rogers Centre, fine), it dropped down to just the convention centre during the recession.  It s been going downhill ever since.

To start off, there is very poor signage going to south building along the skywalk. There are signs that seem to point to a certain entrance, but when we went to that entrance the guy sitting working there indicated that we were going the wrong way. He said it in a way that clearly gave away that he thought we were all morons.  Because when 90% of the people think the signs are pointing at something the problem is with the people, not the signs, right.

Then they make you walk all the way back around outside. By the time you ve circled around you realize that you ve backtracked almost the entire way.  Taking the skywalk was a complete waste of time.  We were then directed to the ceremonial entrance.  I m not sure how we would know which was one ceremonial based on the description alone.

The cars were ok.  We were in the market for a new car, so it s nice to see them all at once.  Many have restricted access.  I used to have the opportunity to visit on the VIP night when everything was fair game.  That s the way to see the auto show.

There were far too many strollers in the way.  It made it difficult to move around at time.  I think if you came on a weeknight things would be better on that front.
