Course content What you ll study

General

The MA TESOL is designed for home or overseas students who wish to pursue a career teaching English as a second or foreign language, but who have little or no formal teaching experience. It provides a foundation in Applied Linguistics, Approaches to English Teaching and Research Methods on which later training in practical teaching can build. Theories of language acquisition and language teaching are explored, with the emphasis on how such theories may be practically applied; however, there is no teaching placement as part of this course.

Modules

You will study four core modules and your choice of two optional modules.

Core modules

TESOL Methods: This module is designed to develop your knowledge of and explore the application of the methodology of teaching English as a second/foreign language. You will examine the nature of each of the four language skills from a discourse perspective and develop links between what teachers and learners do in class and what applied linguistic research tells us about how second language acquisition takes place. You will gain an understanding of interactional competence and learn how to develop it among L2 learners.

English Linguistics: For some students this module may act as a review of some aspects of their previous study, for others it will act as an introduction to key aspects of the field of Linguistics. You will be provided with the essentials in the study of the structure of English and get the opportunity to understand the organising principles that unite the various levels of linguistic analysis. You will further learn how to relate the above to language use in a socio-cultural context and gain an overview of how the above theories are linked to the processes involved in teaching English as a second/foreign language.

Research Methods in Language Learning and Teaching: This module will give you an understanding of methods used to research language learning and teaching. You will explore the relationships between research questions, methods, data analysis and subsequent claims.

Planning and Communicating Research: Building on the knowledge and understanding of research methods gained in the previous module, you will engage in planning of a small research project, identifying and managing the different stages involved, from conception to analysis to writing up and disseminating your results. This module will provide you with the knowledge, understanding and skills necessary for conducting a research study and will allow you to reflect on these to enrich your own experience.

Study your choice of one optional module which may be chosen from the list of modules available to all taught MA students in the Department of Education.

Program Overview

Today’s successful businesses need to base decisions on expert analysis of large volumes of data. The need for successful graduates with a strong analytical background and skills – MBA graduates in particular – has never been higher and is expected to increase over the coming years.

The Online Certificate in Business Analytics is an intensive online program designed for business professionals and graduate students who want to transform terabytes of data into useful and timely business intelligence. Whether your focus is on marketing, operations, finance, strategy, international business or human resources, you will learn how to use data to make knowledge-driven business decisions.

This four-course (12 unit) program is taught by San Jose State University College of Business faculty. Each course is delivered over an eight-week period. In order to complete the certificate, you must earn a minimum GPA of 3.0 on the program as a whole. Only three units of “C” and 0 units of less than “C” coursework can be applied toward a certificate. Only three units of an entire program can be repeated (and can be repeated a single time only). If a course is repeated, both grades will be used in the computation of program GPA.

You can complete the courses asynchronously. Therefore, our program can mesh with any schedule. You can begin the certificate in the fall or spring semester and complete it in less than one calendar year.

And you can take these courses separately from the certification program, as well.

The four courses include:

The number of units applicable to a degree and/or major depending upon matriculation status (with the caveat that the units may not be uniformly applied but require advisor consent) is up to 12 units only after you have been admitted to a graduate program meeting requirements including meeting minimum GMAT score, TOEFL score, etc.

Admissions Requirements:

Please note: This program is 100% online and you can complete it from wherever you are located. San Jose State University will not issue an I-20 to secure an F-1 visa to enter the United States for this program.

Educated Within the United States

You must have completed a four-year bachelors degree from an accredited college or university in the United States.

Your GPA should be 3.0 or better (on a 4.0 scale) in the last 60 semester/90 quarter units of study, with an absolute minimum overall GPA of 2.5. There is no conditional admission to the certificate program.

Educated Outside the United States

If you earned your degree from a higher education institution outside the United States, you must take an English-language proficiency exam. You must hold the equivalent of a U.S. bachelor’s degree from a recognized institution if you earned your degree outside the United States. SJSU does not accept classes taught in English as a substitute for an English-language proficiency exam.

The Online Certificate in Business Analytics requires a minimum score of:

TOEFL (internet-based): 80, or

Pearson’s Test of English (PTE): 68

Letters from applicants or institutions will not be accepted.

SJSU will consider waiving this requirement if you:

  • Earned a bachelors or master’s degree from an accredited U.S. institution
  • Earned a bachelors or master’s degree from an accredited institution for which English is the official and primary language of that country
  • Completed three years of full-time coursework in an accredited U.S. institution

Prerequisite Course, All Applicants:

To enroll in the Business Analytics certificate, you must have completed a college-level statistics course with a grade of B (3.0) or better (on a 4.0 scale) at an accredited college or university within five years prior to enrolling in our program.

Educated within the United States

Complete and submit the Registration Form (PDF) each term. If you take two classes during the term, you do not need to register for both at the same time. (Please note, you may not take classes through Open University in the Business Analytics program if you have previously been denied admission to an SJSU graduate program.)

As soon as you register, the tuition fee will be due in 21 days. If you would like to register for the later class at a later time, that is fine. Just submit the form again prior to the next class.

  2. You will be notified by email when you are officially registered in the course. We will give you your SJSU ID number, as well as the due date for the tuition fee.

Educated Outside the United States

If you were educated outside the United States, you must apply for the Business Analytics Certificate through Cal State Apply. Your application to begin classes in the fall semester must be submitted by May 31, and your application to begin classes in the spring semester must be submitted by November 1. Janelle Jones. an analyst at the Economic Policy Institute’s program studying race and the economy, argues that nationwide averages don’t tell you everything you need to know about the economic experiences of African-Americans and other minority groups. “The idea that the availability of jobs is the way to solve race relations is misguided,” Ms. Jones said, in that a job alone doesn’t assure a stable, prosperous standard of living. “Even if you have jobs available, there’s still discrimination in pay and promotion,” she said. “Being able to have a job that pays well and comes with benefits, to buy a house in a place that isn’t racially segregated, to send your kids to a school that is not racially segregated, these are parts of what makes for a quality economic outcome.”

Master of Legal Studies ( M.L.S. )

The Master of Legal Studies (M.L.S) degree is a 36 unit, two-year graduate program for individuals who desire to obtain an advanced knowledge of the law and the American legal system, but who do not wish to become lawyers. The degree program is designed for individuals in careers that involve interaction with lawyers and the legal system and for those who are entering professions where an understanding of legal reasoning and the legal system will improve their professional effectiveness. The M.L.S. degree program can be valuable to individuals in fields such as law enforcement, public administration, financial services, human resources, healthcare management, government regulation, non-profit management, court administration, and social services. M.L.S. students attend law courses that are part of the regular law school curriculum and are held to the same standards for attendance, participation, and grading as law students.

Disclaimer for Master of Legal Studies Degree

Except as provided in rule 4.30 of the Admissions Rules (Legal education in a foreign state or country), completion of a professional law degree program at Monterey College of Law other than the Juris Doctor degree does not qualify a student to take the California Bar Examination or satisfy the requirements for admission to practice law in California. It may not qualify a student to take the bar examination or to satisfy requirements for admission to the practice of law in any other jurisdiction.   3. Official transcripts for all college, graduate school, and professional schools attended by applicant.
  4. Two letters of recommendation.
  5. A personal statement on how the M.L.S. degree will advance the applicant’s professional or academic objectives.
  6. Please note that the admission requirements and admission application for the M.L.S. degree program is different than the concurrent MLS/JD degree program. Applicants interested in the concurrent MLS/JD program must meet the admissions requirements for that program and submit a MLS/JD application.

Applicants for the M.L.S. degree program are not required to take the LSAT, GRE, GMAT or other graduate admissions tests. If an applicant has taken one of these standardized graduate admissions tests, they are encouraged to include the scores on their application. Foreign applicants of non-English background may be required to take the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) and submit their official scores to MCL. Decisions on admissions are made on the basis of a “full file” review that includes each applicant’s previous academic record, test scores (if required or submitted), work experience, personal and professional recommendations, and a personal statement.

Program Requirements

  1. Completion of 36 units of graduate legal studies. A minimum of 18 units must be completed in residence at Monterey College of Law. Students are allowed flexibility in selecting courses in order to provide the opportunity to focus on specific areas of legal interest. There are 25 units of required courses and 11 units of electives.
  2. Required Courses (units): Contracts (6), Torts (6), Criminal Law (3), Constitutional Law (6), Legal Research (2), and Legal Writing Analysis (2).
  3. Elective Courses: The 11 units of electives may be selected from other law courses that are offered as part of the regular law curriculum (subject to pre-requisites for certain advanced law courses). In addition to regular law courses, elective units of clinical programs, research and writing, study abroad, or pre-approved independent study courses may be counted toward the degree requirements.
  4. A written project of a 5,000 to 7,500-word paper on a pre-determined legal issue is required.
  5. M.L.S. students are required to meet the same attendance requirements and are held to the same standards for class preparation and participation as regular law students.
  6. M.L.S. students are subject to all administrative policies, including the Student Honor Code, exam procedures, registration, payment of tuition and fees, academic disqualification, and grade appeals that are contained in the Student Handbook and are not specifically directed to the J.D. program.
  7. No units earned as part of the M.L.S. program are eligible to be applied toward the J.D. degree program, unless the student is enrolled in the concurrent MLS/JD program. A student in the J.D. program or the concurrent MLS/JD program may petition the Academic Standards Committee to request a transfer to the M.L.S. program.

Grading Standards

During their course of study, M.L.S. students will not be identified separately from J.D. students in courses, examinations, or the grading process. All papers, assignments, and exams will be graded using the MCL system for assigning student or exam ID numbers that protect student identity and ensures anonymous grading.

Administration Student Advising

The M.L.S. degree program will be under the academic direction and supervision of the MCL Dean or his designee. The regular departments of MCL will provide all other administrative services.

Faculty

Since all M.L.S. courses are regular J.D. courses, the faculty for the M.L.S. degree will be the same as for the J.D. program.

Scholarships, Awards Student Loans

Students in the M.L.S. program shall be eligible for scholarships, awards, and student loans. In some cases the students will be eligible for the same categories as regular J.D. students. For certain awards, special recognition will be developed for M.L.S. students.

This class covers enforceable agreements including requirements for the formation of a contract; problems of interpretation, consideration and its equivalent, damages for breach, the statute of frauds, illegality, and rights and liabilities of third parties arising from the contract itself or from assignment of contractual rights or delegation of duties.

Criminal Law. (3) Topics include substantive criminal law and elements of criminal responsibility, law of crimes against persons, property, and habitation, the theory of criminal responsibility, parties and defenses to crimes.

Torts. (6) The historical development and nature of non-contractual civil law that allocates the economic burden of various injuries. A study of the principles of liability for physical harm under theories of negligence, intentional torts, and strict liability, including the law governing defamation, invasion of privacy and other relational harms.

Constitutional Law. (6) A study of the United States Constitution with an emphasis on the theory and practice of judicial interpretation and review. Topics include the separation of federal powers, the relation of the federal government to the states and specific government powers (tax, treaty, war and commercial). The course also covers limitations placed on the exercise of governmental power, emphasizing the Bill of Rights, due process and equal protection clauses.

Legal Research. (2) A class to familiarize students with the basic foundations of legal research. Assignments include researching problems in the law library and researching and writing office memoranda, opinion letters and other documents. Computer assisted legal research is included.

Legal Writing and Analysis. (2) A course designed to improve analytical and written communication skills. Students work on simple legal problems, learning how to identify and analyze legal issues and express their legal reasoning. Assignments include exercises in case briefing, exam writing and drafting legal memoranda.

Elective Curriculum

The 11 units of electives may be selected from other law courses that are offered as part of the regular law curriculum (subject to pre-requisites for certain advanced law courses).

In addition to regular law courses, elective units of clinical programs, research and writing, study abroad, or pre-approved independent study courses may be counted toward the degree requirements. In certain circumstances, pre-approved, law-related graduate courses may be transferred from other law schools or graduate institutions and applied to the 36-unit graduation requirement. A minimum of 18 units must be completed in residence at Monterey College of Law.

A written project of a 5,000 to 7,500-word paper on a pre-determined legal issue is also required.

• Contact the professor of the class for permission, with the following exceptions:

• Note that many of our popular classes fill quickly and cannot be overenrolled. You should not assume that you’ll be able to add a class that is full.

Do you want to switch to a different catalog year.

Requests for a catalog switch need to be entered by the chair of your major department.

You may need to switch your catalog for one or more of these reasons:

• You just returned to SCSU after an absence, and you want to follow the curriculum rules from when you first started at SCSU (for example, the older Gen Ed requirements or older Psychology requirements)
• You want your degree evaluation to reflect changes to the Psychology major that went into effect after you started (for example, the revised BS in Psychology that started in Fall 2016
• You want to take advantage of changes to the LEP that go into effect in Fall 2017. For Psychology majors, these are:

— You can skip one of the following Tier 2 categories. American Experience, Creative Drive, Cultural Expression, Global Awareness, Social Structure, and Time Place.

— If you transferred with 30-59 credits. you can waive the World Language requirement if you took two semesters of a language in college (e.g. SPA 101), or three levels’ worth in high school (e.g. equivalent of SPA 200)

— If you transferred with 60 or more credits. the World Languages requirement is waived.

*** If you have between 30-59 transfer credits and you hope to waive the LEP World Language requirement, you need to also submit the LEP WLL Waiver Request Form to the LEP office. You may need to include additional documentation regarding high school courses. (This is separate from our departmental request form.)

*** If you are changing your catalog year for any other reason (including if you have 60+ transfer credits and want a WLL waiver), you only need to submit the request form to Dr. Brancazio.
