While curriculums vary depending on the university and the degree program selected, generally any geomatics degree program will cover certain basic subjects in the field, including remote sensing, digital imaging, digital mapping, geodesy, geographical information systems, photogrammetry, global positioning and navigation, and land management.

Along with your program focus, you will also broaden your liberal arts background with courses in English, communications, social and natural science, humanities, fine arts, and mathematics.

It is anticipated that the MCCS s Associate of Applied Science graduate will transfer approximately 60 credits, including 19-21 credits of general education requirements and a maximum of 39-41 credits of technical/trade courses. The 39-41 technical/trade credits would constitute the Applied Science Major without being named in the degree.

The general education/core courses from the MCCS will, in most instances, include: college writing, speech or technical writing, social science, lab science, mathematics, and humanities. UMA s 37 credit hour baccalaureate core and general education requirement would need to be met in order to earn the Bachelor of Applied Science Degree. This requirement consists of:

Energy costs, the impacts of various energy sources and the changing environment are hot issues today and will continue to be for decades. These factors are influencing the decision making processes of utilities, building owners, the construction industry, institutions, municipalities and political leaders.

You can become one of the knowledgeable professionals contributing to decisions relating to energy production, transport, uses and/or energy conservation in selected sectors of our society.

This program focuses on two principal areas of the energy sector, energy management and sustainable building technology and innovative renewable energy alternatives while, also, providing a breadth of knowledge relating broader energy industry.

Students will examine the design and application of sustainable buildings as well as the energy use implications of retrofitting existing building stock. Designated aspects of building automation and energy controls in areas, such as, heating, air conditioning, refrigeration and lighting are studied.

The integration of renewable energy alternatives, such as solar thermal, solar PV, wind, etc. with conventional energy sources are evaluated. New Computer Science Undergraduates Arrive in Record-Breaking Numbers

Department chair Dr. Kendall E. Nygard welcomed the new computer science first year students on August 21st. This year’s group of new computer science undergraduates is over 30% larger than last fall’s record-breaking group. Nygard and Asst. Professor Jeremy Straub gave the new students a tour of the department after Nygard’s welcome remarks.

Computer Science Faculty Get $988,114 Grant to Study American Indian Diabetes Self-Management

Computer Science Assoc. Prof. Juan Li is the principal investigator for a newly announced grant from the National Science Foundation to study self-management of diabetes in Native Americans, along with co-investigator and Computer Science Assoc. Prof. Jun Kong. Siobhan Wescott, an NDSU Asst. Prof. of Practice in Public Health, and Donald Warne, a Professor and Chair of the Public Health Department, are also co-investigators on the grant.

The epidemic of diabetes in American Indian communities is a serious public health challenge. The goal of the project is to develop an integrated, accessible, cost-effective solution for improved diabetes self-management and social networking for American Indian patients. Considering the quasi-ubiquitous use of cell phones in most American Indian communities, a cell phone-based platform is proposed to provide smart and personalized service.

The project benefits from the combined experience of the investigators in multiple related areas. Dr. Li’s expertise lies in eHealth, knowledge management, social networking, and semantic web technologies. She has published in the field of disease prediction, smart eHealth mobile application, eHealth cloud, eHealth security, and healthcare social networking. Dr. Kong’s expertise lies in Human computer interaction, especially context-aware mobile interaction. Dr. Warne’s expertise lies in family medicine, public health, American Indian Health and disparities research. Dr. Wescott’s expertise lies in Native American health education and American Indian health. Especially, being American Indian, both Dr. Warne and Dr. Wescott have extensive experience providing diabetes education for American Indians.

This project will provide valuable research opportunities for both graduate and undergraduate students, especially from underrepresented populations.

Project Receives Nationwide Media Attention

Work at NDSU with the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory to enhance 3D Printing technologies has gotten national attention via an Associated Press article. Coverage Includes US News World Report, The Charlotte Observer, The Huston Chronicle, The San Francisco Chronicle and over 50 other newspapers. The project includes multiple Computer Science students and is advised by Computer Science Asst. Prof. Jeremy Straub.

NDSU team wins technical prize at international drone competition

A team of North Dakota State University students competed, for the first time in the university’s and state’s history, in the International Aerial Robotics Competition in Atlanta, Georgia, and won an award recognizing their technical design. The IARC is the world’s oldest aerial robotics competition for colleges and universities. NDSU’s team was recognized for excellence in the design of the air vehicle, payload, operations and risk reduction.

The team was the sole recipient of the Best Technical Paper award at the competition. This award recognizes the overall technical solution developed by the team as well as its presentation in the paper. The paper was presented by NDSU Computer Science freshman Abdullah Almosalami at the competition; Asst. Prof. Jeremy Straub was the team’s faculty advisor. The team plans to continue working on its aerial vehicle to prepare to compete again at next year’s competition.

Course content What you ll study

General

The MA TESOL is designed for home or overseas students who wish to pursue a career teaching English as a second or foreign language, but who have little or no formal teaching experience. It provides a foundation in Applied Linguistics, Approaches to English Teaching and Research Methods on which later training in practical teaching can build. Theories of language acquisition and language teaching are explored, with the emphasis on how such theories may be practically applied; however, there is no teaching placement as part of this course.

Modules

You will study four core modules and your choice of two optional modules.

Core modules

TESOL Methods: This module is designed to develop your knowledge of and explore the application of the methodology of teaching English as a second/foreign language. You will examine the nature of each of the four language skills from a discourse perspective and develop links between what teachers and learners do in class and what applied linguistic research tells us about how second language acquisition takes place. You will gain an understanding of interactional competence and learn how to develop it among L2 learners.

English Linguistics: For some students this module may act as a review of some aspects of their previous study, for others it will act as an introduction to key aspects of the field of Linguistics. You will be provided with the essentials in the study of the structure of English and get the opportunity to understand the organising principles that unite the various levels of linguistic analysis. You will further learn how to relate the above to language use in a socio-cultural context and gain an overview of how the above theories are linked to the processes involved in teaching English as a second/foreign language.

Research Methods in Language Learning and Teaching: This module will give you an understanding of methods used to research language learning and teaching. You will explore the relationships between research questions, methods, data analysis and subsequent claims.

Planning and Communicating Research: Building on the knowledge and understanding of research methods gained in the previous module, you will engage in planning of a small research project, identifying and managing the different stages involved, from conception to analysis to writing up and disseminating your results. This module will provide you with the knowledge, understanding and skills necessary for conducting a research study and will allow you to reflect on these to enrich your own experience.

Study your choice of one optional module which may be chosen from the list of modules available to all taught MA students in the Department of Education.

Program Overview

Today’s successful businesses need to base decisions on expert analysis of large volumes of data. The need for successful graduates with a strong analytical background and skills – MBA graduates in particular – has never been higher and is expected to increase over the coming years.

The Online Certificate in Business Analytics is an intensive online program designed for business professionals and graduate students who want to transform terabytes of data into useful and timely business intelligence. Whether your focus is on marketing, operations, finance, strategy, international business or human resources, you will learn how to use data to make knowledge-driven business decisions.

This four-course (12 unit) program is taught by San Jose State University College of Business faculty. Each course is delivered over an eight-week period. In order to complete the certificate, you must earn a minimum GPA of 3.0 on the program as a whole. Only three units of “C” and 0 units of less than “C” coursework can be applied toward a certificate. Only three units of an entire program can be repeated (and can be repeated a single time only). If a course is repeated, both grades will be used in the computation of program GPA.

You can complete the courses asynchronously. Therefore, our program can mesh with any schedule. You can begin the certificate in the fall or spring semester and complete it in less than one calendar year.

And you can take these courses separately from the certification program, as well.

The four courses include:

BUS 235A: Introduction to Business Analytics
BUS 235B: Business Research
BUS 235C: Data Mining
BUS 235D: Business Analytics Simulation

The number of units applicable to a degree and/or major depending upon matriculation status (with the caveat that the units may not be uniformly applied but require advisor consent) is up to 12 units only after you have been admitted to a graduate program meeting requirements including meeting minimum GMAT score, TOEFL score, etc.

Admissions Requirements:

Please note: This program is 100% online and you can complete it from wherever you are located. San Jose State University will not issue an I-20 to secure an F-1 visa to enter the United States for this program.

Educated Within the United States

You must have completed a four-year bachelors degree from an accredited college or university in the United States.

Your GPA should be 3.0 or better (on a 4.0 scale) in the last 60 semester/90 quarter units of study, with an absolute minimum overall GPA of 2.5. There is no conditional admission to the certificate program.

Educated Outside the United States

If you earned your degree from a higher education institution outside the United States, you must take an English-language proficiency exam. You must hold the equivalent of a U.S. bachelor’s degree from a recognized institution if you earned your degree outside the United States. SJSU does not accept classes taught in English as a substitute for an English-language proficiency exam.

The Online Certificate in Business Analytics requires a minimum score of:

TOEFL (internet-based): 80, or

Pearson’s Test of English (PTE): 68

Letters from applicants or institutions will not be accepted.

SJSU will consider waiving this requirement if you:

  • Earned a bachelors or master’s degree from an accredited U.S. institution
  • Earned a bachelors or master’s degree from an accredited institution for which English is the official and primary language of that country
  • Completed three years of full-time coursework in an accredited U.S. institution

Prerequisite Course, All Applicants:

To enroll in the Business Analytics certificate, you must have completed a college-level statistics course with a grade of B (3.0) or better (on a 4.0 scale) at an accredited college or university within five years prior to enrolling in our program.

If you have not yet met the statistics requirement, we recommend:

As soon as you register, the tuition fee will be due in 21 days. If you would like to register for the later class at a later time, that is fine. Just submit the form again prior to the next class.

If you were educated outside the United States, you must apply for the Business Analytics Certificate through Cal State Apply. Your application to begin classes in the fall semester must be submitted by May 31, and your application to begin classes in the spring semester must be submitted by November 1. The Master of Legal Studies (M.L.S) degree is a 36 unit, two-year graduate program for individuals who desire to obtain an advanced knowledge of the law and the American legal system, but who do not wish to become lawyers. The degree program is designed for individuals in careers that involve interaction with lawyers and the legal system and for those who are entering professions where an understanding of legal reasoning and the legal system will improve their professional effectiveness. Applicants for the M.L.S. degree program are not required to take the LSAT, GRE, GMAT or other graduate admissions tests. If an applicant has taken one of these standardized graduate admissions tests, they are encouraged to include the scores on their application. Foreign applicants of non-English background may be required to take the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) and submit their official scores to MCL. Decisions on admissions are made on the basis of a “full file” review that includes each applicant’s previous academic record, test scores (if required or submitted), work experience, personal and professional recommendations, and a personal statement.

Program Requirements

  1. Completion of 36 units of graduate legal studies. A minimum of 18 units must be completed in residence at Monterey College of Law. Students are allowed flexibility in selecting courses in order to provide the opportunity to focus on specific areas of legal interest. There are 25 units of required courses and 11 units of electives.
  2. Required Courses (units): Contracts (6), Torts (6), Criminal Law (3), Constitutional Law (6), Legal Research (2), and Legal Writing Analysis (2).
  3. Elective Courses: The 11 units of electives may be selected from other law courses that are offered as part of the regular law curriculum (subject to pre-requisites for certain advanced law courses). In addition to regular law courses, elective units of clinical programs, research and writing, study abroad, or pre-approved independent study courses may be counted toward the degree requirements.
  4. A written project of a 5,000 to 7,500-word paper on a pre-determined legal issue is required.
  5. M.L.S. students are required to meet the same attendance requirements and are held to the same standards for class preparation and participation as regular law students.
  6. M.L.S. students are subject to all administrative policies, including the Student Honor Code, exam procedures, registration, payment of tuition and fees, academic disqualification, and grade appeals that are contained in the Student Handbook and are not specifically directed to the J.D. program.
  7. No units earned as part of the M.L.S. program are eligible to be applied toward the J.D. degree program, unless the student is enrolled in the concurrent MLS/JD program. A student in the J.D. program or the concurrent MLS/JD program may petition the Academic Standards Committee to request a transfer to the M.L.S. program.

Grading Standards

During their course of study, M.L.S. students will not be identified separately from J.D. students in courses, examinations, or the grading process. All papers, assignments, and exams will be graded using the MCL system for assigning student or exam ID numbers that protect student identity and ensures anonymous grading.

Administration Student Advising

The M.L.S. degree program will be under the academic direction and supervision of the MCL Dean or his designee. The regular departments of MCL will provide all other administrative services.

Faculty

Since all M.L.S. courses are regular J.D. courses, the faculty for the M.L.S. degree will be the same as for the J.D. program.

Scholarships, Awards Student Loans

Students in the M.L.S. program shall be eligible for scholarships, awards, and student loans. In some cases the students will be eligible for the same categories as regular J.D. students. For certain awards, special recognition will be developed for M.L.S. students.

Courses:

Required Courses (25 Units)

Contracts. This class covers enforceable agreements including requirements for the formation of a contract; problems of interpretation, consideration and its equivalent, damages for breach, the statute of frauds, illegality, and rights and liabilities of third parties arising from the contract itself or from assignment of contractual rights or delegation of duties.

Criminal Law. (3) Topics include substantive criminal law and elements of criminal responsibility, law of crimes against persons, property, and habitation, the theory of criminal responsibility, parties and defenses to crimes.

Torts. (6) The historical development and nature of non-contractual civil law that allocates the economic burden of various injuries. A study of the principles of liability for physical harm under theories of negligence, intentional torts, and strict liability, including the law governing defamation, invasion of privacy and other relational harms.

Constitutional Law. (6) A study of the United States Constitution with an emphasis on the theory and practice of judicial interpretation and review. Topics include the separation of federal powers, the relation of the federal government to the states and specific government powers (tax, treaty, war and commercial). The course also covers limitations placed on the exercise of governmental power, emphasizing the Bill of Rights, due process and equal protection clauses.

Legal Research. (2) A class to familiarize students with the basic foundations of legal research. Assignments include researching problems in the law library and researching and writing office memoranda, opinion letters and other documents. Computer assisted legal research is included.

Legal Writing and Analysis. (2) A course designed to improve analytical and written communication skills. Students work on simple legal problems, learning how to identify and analyze legal issues and express their legal reasoning. Assignments include exercises in case briefing, exam writing and drafting legal memoranda.

Elective Curriculum

The 11 units of electives may be selected from other law courses that are offered as part of the regular law curriculum (subject to pre-requisites for certain advanced law courses).

In addition to regular law courses, elective units of clinical programs, research and writing, study abroad, or pre-approved independent study courses may be counted toward the degree requirements. In certain circumstances, pre-approved, law-related graduate courses may be transferred from other law schools or graduate institutions and applied to the 36-unit graduation requirement. A minimum of 18 units must be completed in residence at Monterey College of Law.

Those in the Southwest were also high earners, averaging $58,110 per year. At an average of $48,876, paralegals in the Great Plains states earned the least. As of 2012, the BLS found that the District of Columbia was the highest-paying state, at $68,850 per year, while paralegals in Arkansas earned the lowest average salary, at $38,290.

Other Factors

Other factors influence paralegal pay, especially years of experience. According to the NALA, new paralegals start out earning an average of $37,949 per year during their first two years, while those with 25 or more years of experience earn an average salary of $61,058 per year. Type of employment can also make a difference; the BLS found in 2012 that those employed in private firms averaged $48,170 per year, while state government paralegals averaged $44,570, local government workers $50,540 and federal government paralegals $65,660.

Benefits and Bonuses

In addition to a regular salary, many paralegals receive bonus pay and benefits. As of 2012, paralegals reported an average annual bonus of $4,501 to the NALA. Those who held an associate’s degree in paralegal studies reported an average annual bonus of $3,014. The NALA also reports that 89 percent of paralegals receive either full or partial medical insurance through their job, 66 percent receive some form of dental insurance and 79 percent participate in a workplace pension or retirement plan.

CNS is a four-semester program, with required subjects available year-round. That means you can choose to complete your studies in four consecutive semesters, starting in the fall, winter or spring. Or you could take a break between semesters.

Courses in this program are hands-on, helping you get the most out of your studies.     Event Sport Management Degrees

    During the first year of the ESE program, students complete an applied learning module called The Project Factory. This exciting event management course allows students to practice event management and sport management for several exciting events each semester, including cultural events such as the Glion’s Got Talent Show, theme evenings, and charity events. They also take charge of the campus fitness center, organize sport activities and plan sport competitions.

    Additionally, ESE students volunteer in real industry events and work on business projects for industry partners. In the past, they have participated in projects for UEFA, volunteered at the Freeride World tour Chamonix, and participated in many sports competitions and conferences attended by the public.

    Students can apply for combined programs going into the first year of the J.D. program (via OLSAS) or in the fall term of their first year in the J.D. program. Students must apply to and be admitted separately by both the Faculty of Law and the corresponding department or faculty within the University, meeting all admission requirements for each.

    Students in combined programs are eligible to apply for Faculty of Law financial aid during the years that they are registered full-time in J.D. courses.

    Counting Credits*

    Credit weights assigned by other University of Toronto faculties/departments cannot be changed and must stand as allocated by that department. There are several administrative reasons for this, including:

    1. The University of Toronto Transcript is comprehensive.
    2. Each faculty/department sets the credit weight for each course on ROSI. This weight applies to the course and to every student in the course, therefore, it is not possible for either faculty/department to change the credit weighting for an individual student.

    In the absence of a Combined Program Director, students should speak to Assistant Dean Sara Faherty.

    The Faculty also offers the following certificate programs. Completion of these programs will result in a transcript notation indicating that the student has earned a certificate. These programs show a concentration on a specific topic that can include significant outside courses, but is completed within the law school. They do not offer a second degree, but rather demonstrate an academic concentration on a specific topic. Students earning certificates must complete all other graduation requirements.

    As an English major I have learned to appreciate the peaceful, yet exhilarating moment when my mind engages with an author’s thoughts on a page. As Toni Morrison says in The Dancing Mind. “[reading is] to experience one’s own mind dancing with another’s.” In my early days as a college student, I wanted to know the “true” meaning of a work or what the author intended, however, I have now realized this would void literature of its most noteworthy complexities. Individual interpretations bring varied insights to a work and it is also interesting to point out messages the author may not have realized s/he included in the piece.

    I have always been a thinker, but throughout my coursework, I have greatly sharpened my critical analysis skills. Instead of focusing on proposed meanings or biographical background, I have learned to continuously ask “why” on many different levels. I challenge myself to dig into a text as deeply as possible and unpack every detail to develop a satisfying close read. Also, by reading multiple novels by the same author I have learned to identify different writing styles and make connections that weave texts together; this helped me develop a deeper understanding of the novels. When I look at one of my freshman level novels and see clean pages, I realize that I did not actively read the book. I guess you could say that I have learned to read with a pen, which has drastically taken my writing to a new level because I am able to connect back with my initial insights marked on the page.

    Writing had always been one of my strengths, but it was challenging to take that initial step past the high school, five-paragraph essay form that constricted my ideas for so long. Moving past this form, however, has greatly opened my mind. My thoughts are now able to be more complex because I have learned how to sustain a logical argument in an organized manner. My writing has become increasingly more concise and I no longer have room for added “fluff” or “padding.” Another improvement is my ability to point out multiple complexities within a text, instead of sticking to one-sided arguments in my papers. Furthermore, learning how to find peer reviewed journal articles and order books through interlibrary loan has significantly widened the scope of my research, which has lead to more scholarly papers with credible references. My writing is so much more interesting than it used to be.

    It is difficult to identify gaps in my knowledge as an English major, only because I feel like I have learned so much. I feel that I have largely expanded my literary analysis and writing skills, but I need to be prepared to teach high school students their required literature. I think it would be useful to identify commonly taught novels in our local high schools and study them myself. By studying the required literature and thinking about how to teach it, I will have a sturdy foundation to work from once I am in the classroom.

    Online MPH Degree

    Overview

    The online MPH Program is a 48-credit course of study, designed for distance students who wish to obtain an MPH without the restrictions of registering for a full-time program. The online MPH program includes all of the design features of the campus-based program and is fully online with no campus visits required. Courses are offered on a semester schedule with weekly due-dates. Lectures are prerecorded and available for students to watch at their convenience. Tests are administered through an online proctoring service. Course deadlines are set up in Eastern Time. Applicants with a US-awarded, health-based doctorate degree may also request the online accelerated 42-credit MPH program. The 48-credit curriculum has been designed to encourage the development of competence in key public health skills and to meet current standards in the field of public health, Council on Education in Public Health (CEPH) accreditation criteria, and the College’s mission, goals and objectives.

    Graduation Requirements

    Requirements for graduation from the online MPH program are:

    • One course in each of the five core areas of public health (15 credits)
    • Seminar in Contemporary Public Health Issues (1 credit)
    • Core courses in an area of concentration (15-21 credits)
    • Elective courses relevant to the chosen concentration and individual career goals (0-6 credits)
    • Public Health Internship (5 credits)
    • Major paper and presentation (credit assigned through the Seminar in Contemporary Public Health Issues)
    • Completion of the program with a minimum 3.0 grade point average (GPA) with a C or better in all courses
    • Completion of the above requirements within 7 years from admission

    Online MPH Core Coursework

    All online MPH students take five core public health courses. The core courses in Environmental Health, Epidemiology, Public Health Management and Policy, and Social and Behavioral Sciences are taken by all students. The core Biostatistics course varies across concentration areas. Students in the Biostatistics, Environmental Health, and Epidemiology concentrations must take PHC6052, Introduction to Biostatistical Methods. All other MPH students must take PHC 6050 Statistical Methods for Health Science I. In addition, all students must take 1 credit of Seminar in Contemporary Public Health Issues and 5 credits of PHC6946 Public Health Internship.

    Below are the required core public health courses that all MPH students must take.

    Oneline MPH students are admitted into one of two concentration areas, from which the number and type of advanced specialty course credits are determined.     PHC 6946 Public Health Internship (5 credits)

    The concepts presented via coursework are integrated and assimilated through an internship, which provides an opportunity for each student to apply his or her knowledge in a practice setting. A wide range of settings and opportunities may be suitable for an internship. Each internship is individually tailored to assure competence in general MPH and concentration-specific skills and to meet student goals, concentration criteria, and the needs of the agencies involved. Current employment positions of health professionals and residencies cannot be accepted for internship credit. The internship is usually completed in the student’s final term in the program, and always includes a special project that serves as the basis for a final oral and written report. The internship and the special project must be approved by the student’s faculty advisor.

    Special Project, Major Paper and Public Health Day Presentation

    Students are encouraged to engage in many activities during an internship. However, each student must conduct one special project which serves as the basis for a major paper and a presentation. These culminating activities of the MPH program – major paper and presentation — are intended to encourage students to understand their projects in the larger context of public health as a cross-disciplinary field, and to examine how the project helped to strengthen their competence in general public health and concentration-specific skills. Student presentations are scheduled on one or two Public Health Days near the end of fall, spring and summer semesters. Three faculty members, including the student’s faculty advisor, attend each presentation and are responsible for assessing whether the student has successfully demonstrated a broad-based knowledge of the field of public health and depth of knowledge and skill in his/her concentration area.

    PHC 6601 Seminar in Contemporary Public Health Issues (1 credit)

    Integration of public health topics, issues, and skills into a culminating experience for the MPH program. Required final paper and oral presentation or poster session. (Register concurrently with PHC 6946.)

    MPH Competencies

    All students in the MPH Program are expected to master a set of competencies during the course of their studies. The competencies that have been selected by the faculty of the College of Public Health and Health Professions are derived from the Ten Essential Public Health Services and they are consistent with recommendations of the Centers for Disease Control (www.cdc.gov).

    Become a Forensic Nurse

    Overview

    The path to becoming a Forensic Nurse will vary. Although Forensic Nursing is the fastest growing nursing subspecialty, nurses often need to spend significant time and effort to educate employers about the value of having a forensic nurse on staff.

    Most registered nurses find success in starting as a Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner. or SANE. To become a SANE, registered nurses must take a Sexual Assault Examiner Class comprised of 40 hours of classroom training, followed by an average of 40 hours of clinical training. IAFN has Educational Guidelines that recommend this training as a minimum starting point for SANEs.

    Some communities also use registered nurses as Coroners or Death Investigators. Before taking a Death Investigator Course, a registered nurse should investigate whether their local community hires nurses as death investigators. If not, that nurse might need to be a trailblazer and advocate for her or himself to be hired in such a position.

    Another option is to get a Masters degree or PhD in forensic nursing. However, an advanced degree does not guarantee a job. Despite the high quality of Forensic Nursing degree programs, in many cases, nurses will still have to advocate to their facility or employer to create a position.

    Is Forensic Nursing Really for me?

    1. Do you already have a good balance in life and work? Read up on Vicarious Trauma so you know what can change in your personal life as well as your professional life from the forensic work you will be doing.

    2. Does your family/significant others support you in your choice? Sometimes we forget that we take our families with us in whatever career path we choose. Peek into the world of Forensic Nursing with this video documentary.

    3. Are you going to be in a service that supports your work? Is education ongoing, is the program supportive of the examiners? Would you be asked to do volunteer work, ex: no pay for on call, no educational fund, long on call schedules.

    4. Have you talked to other examiners where you intend to work? Ask them to be honest about what your expectations are and the reality of the work from their perspective. The work is much different than what most non forensic folks think.

    IAFN approved courses are listed here. Potential students should investigate their options and then directly contact the schools in which they are interested. Potential students will want to consider whether a certificate course or an advanced degree will better meet their career or educational objectives. Students will also want to look into any requirements that their state’s Board of Nursing or similar organization might place on a forensic nurse.

    Certification in Forensic Nursing

    The Board-Certification offered by IAFN is different than state credentialing or earning a ‘certificate’ at the end of an educational course. Although Board Certification is not a requirement to practice in most areas, getting certified signifies that a nurse is committed to professionalism and has the expert knowledge necessary to meet the highest standards of forensic nursing. Studies from the Institute of Medicine have demonstrated that specialty-certified nurses have higher rates of patient satisfaction, lower rates of work-related errors in patient care, and in some cases receive a higher salary or stipend for maintaining certification.

    IAFN offers two certifications for the Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE). The SANE-A is specialized for Adults and Adolescents, and the SANE-P is specialized for pediatrics. To become certified, registered nurses must pass an examination. The exams are offered twice a year during the months of May and October, and may be taken at testing center sites across the US and internationally. In order to sit for the exam, candidates must first have been a practicing RN for a minimum of 2 years and meet the other eligibility criteria determined by the Forensic Nursing Certification Board.     As mentioned earlier, those looking to practice Forensic Nursing will want to make sure that the training they receive meets all of the requirements in their community. Requirements vary significantly, and a person should contact the organization in their state, province, or country that regulates the practice or licensure of nurses.     Education may be “the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world,” in the wise words of Nelson Mandela. but is that true of education in all its forms?

    That, indeed, has been the question of the day among Linux bloggers, who have recently been debating the value of the traditional computer science degree in particular.

    “How worthwhile are Computer Science degrees?” asked the ever-contemplative team over at TuxRadar in an Open Ballot recently, thus kicking off the conversation.

    “Many technology companies complain that graduates, even of Computer Science, arrive with little understanding of how to work in industry and often lack knowledge of basic coding paradigms,” they added. “This seems a great shame to us, especially when there’s so many high quality open source projects out there who’d love some students to help them out, and who they’d be happy to mentor in return.”

    FOSS aficionados have had no shortage of opinions on the topic — at TuxRadar or beyond.

    “When we were hiring recently and had to do interviews, the candidates who had degrees were often not as good as those who had more real-world experience,” Johnny added.

    Indeed, “it’s a trophy, good for display only, but not much good for anything else,” asserted Anonymous Penguin From The Kitchen. “Just like those ornamental swords hanging on the wall. Can’t beat the humble kitchen chopper that’s in daily use.”

    ‘I Don’t Think I Learnt Anything Crucial’

    Then again: “When I came to choosing what degree course to apply for, I was pretty sure a Computer Science degree would probably consist of an awful lot of teaching that I didn’t require, since I’d already picked up quite a lot of knowledge by that point,” chimed in blogger Paul Gideon Dann.

    “In the end, I decided to go for something a little off the beaten track, and chose a degree in Artificial Intelligence and Computer Science, which was 50% CS and 50% AI,” Dann added.

    Even so, “all in all, I don’t think I learnt anything crucial at university,” Dann concluded.

    ‘A Degree Is Not Needed’

    Similar opinions could be heard down at the Linux blogosphere’s Punchy Penguin Saloon.

    “Most of the time a degree is not needed for even advanced programming tasks and never needed for systems admin work for the average, but a degree is needed to get past the less competent HR departments,” consultant and Slashdot blogger Gerhard Mack offered.

    Of course, “I really question if anyone with actual skills would want to work in a place that knows so little about the IT industry,” he added.

    “I have seen some specialized places that had a legitimate reason to need a degree, but those places are very high level work and I would only suggest a degree if you REALLY love programming and want to take it to a specialized level such as physics simulations, compression/encryption work, etc.,” Mack concluded.

    ‘One Path Among Many’

    Similarly, “I have met excellent software engineers, programmers, and developers who had a CS degree and others who did not,” agreed Chris Travers, a Slashdot blogger who works on the LedgerSMB project.

    By the same token, “I have met many mediocre developers who had a CS degree and many who did not,” Travers added.

    “I suspect that in some areas of software development, a CS degree is extremely helpful, but I don’t think it is ever required,” he explained. “One thing the open source community is very good at doing is encouraging people to learn by both doing and by talking to those with a great deal of formal training or knowledge.”

    Such transfers of knowledge “can be compared to apprenticeships in the old guild system,” he pointed out.

    All in all, “I see a CS degree as one path among many,” Travers concluded. “However, one clear advantage it has is that it is meaningful to people who do not know our industry and yet are in charge of screening resumes.”

    ‘Good Advice for a Decade’

    Blogger and educator Robert Pogson said he is “so old my academic career started before Computer Science took off at my university, otherwise I would likely have studied that instead of Physics,” he told Linux Girl.

    “My love of all things computer started during first year university when I laid hold of a room-filling pocket calculator called the IBM 1620 which had blinking lights and a typewriter console,” he explained. “With it, I learned Fortran II and Assembler/machine language.

    “Later, on the IBM System/360, I learned many different programming languages before I latched onto Pascal and Modula 2,” he added. “Those were some of the best years of my life, and computers have been important to me ever since.”

    As a teacher, Pogson has often told his students that “if they were the least bit keen on maths and science, they should get into computer science or DNA tinkering,” he noted. “I think that has been good advice for a decade, and I don’t see any closing down of opportunities in those fields.”

    ‘Be ANYTHING But a Tech Guy’

    Slashdot blogger hairyfeet wasn’t so sure.

    Computer science degrees are valuable — “in Bangalore,” hairyfeet opined. “The guy in Bangalore with a half a dozen degrees only gets paid around $19k; you REALLY think you can compete with that?”

    Until the U.S. government “does something about offshoring and H1-Bs, you’ll continue to see what happened to the blue collar workers happen to the IT guys,” hairyfeet predicted. “I’m personally tired of hearing of guys that had to train the H1-B that would replace them, or seeing ads in the paper that are so obviously written following the ‘How NOT to hire an American’ playbook.”

    Hairyfeet has also advised his oldest son to “be ANYTHING but a tech guy,” he added. “Programmers will be joining autoworkers and machinists on the bread lines. Their degrees cost less than $5k, yours cost over $50k; they can live well on 15K a year, you can’t even pay your student loans.

    “It’s simple economics, folks — survival of the greediest — and nobody makes ‘greedy’ like a U.S. corporate head,” he concluded.

    ‘An Education-Loan Bubble’

    Ultimately, “the real concern is. a blohow valuable is ANY degree in the current circumstances?” opined Barbara Hudsongger on Slashdot who goes by “Tom” on the site.

    “We’re in an education-loan bubble, similar to the mortgage-loan bubble that imploded a few years ago,” Hudson explained. “Students today are frequently taking on 6-figure debts for a degree that in many cases will never earn back the extra cost, will be out of date before they graduate, and will be irrelevant to their careers several years down the road.

    “I only know one person who is using their degree in their original field of study,” she added. “For everyone else, it’s been a case of ‘stuff happens.'”

    In short, “the sad fact is that times have changed,” Hudson concluded. “The ‘second IT bubble’ is tailing off. You’ll make more money and have better job security as a cop or firefighter — those jobs can’t be outsourced to the third world, and you have a union to negotiate better working conditions, benefits and wages.”
