    DAA Seattle just had a monster week, selling nearly 600 units! The market was rock solid and the volume was huge. Dave Blake and the DAA Seattle team continue to grow and become more and more of a significant player the Pacific Northwest auction market.

    We are 25 years old!

    This coming week, DAA Northwest celebrates its 25th Anniversary in Spokane. Greg and I opened the doors on September 25th and held our Grand Opening Sale on November 11th 1992. We sold 32 units at our first sale, 16 at our second, and then things really started to get tough!

    My relationship with Greg Mahugh did not begin here in Spokane. It started in 5th grade on the baseball field. We have been close friends ever since. Together, we opened the doors in Spokane with the dream of a simple life, raising our families in a nice little town near the great outdoors and running a two-lane auto auction. That was the goal. Here we are 25 years later. We would have never even dreamed, let alone planned for what has happened. The dealer support has been with us since day one. We owe you, the dealers, for all that has happened over the past 25 years. This we know and have never taken for granted.

    Our little organization has grown to markets in Seattle and Kansas City along with Spokane. We had a stint in the Tri-Cities from 1995 until 1998, and in El Paso, Texas from 2010 until 2016. Through it all, Spokane has been our home and the engine that fuels everything.

    We hope you can join us this week for a celebration of 25 years of auctions in Spokane. Our Wednesday sale will begin at 1:00 pm and will be followed at 6:30 by a dinner party and fundraiser at Northern Quest Resort. Thursday, we ll get things started at 9:00 am and will wrap up the day with thousands in post-sale prizes.

    So, you want to make money selling used cars You need an Auto Dealer License to sell cars for profit in this country if you want to legally sell more than 5 cars per year. So you go to your local DMV and inquire how to get an Auto Dealer License fast. These auto dealer license requirements are based on Federal mandates and guidelines (that s why they are all very similar all across the nation).They will say, okay, great. Fine. No problem.

    The DMV clerk will tell you, you need to have a building this size, you need to have a building sign this large. You have to have business insurance. You have to have be bonded for this dollar figure. You have to have a car lot or some kind of physical location. You have to have a telephone landline,etc. etc. This is the basic requirements no matter what state you are in this country. So that is roughly $1100 per month in fixed costs ..and this is just for something basic. A basic office and 2 car storage set up (with utilities and insurance).

    If you need an actual Used Car Auto Dealer License, we do have a Florida Dealer License Package for only $7999 (actual auto dealer license thru the state of Florida). But this is only for high rollers people who are at that level of the business.

    A new car dealer that s all together different story. We are talking about a used car dealer on this website. But when you have your auto dealer license, you are running your dealership. You are running a used car dealership. High value cars. Whatever cars you want.

    So you are on this website because you re thinking about getting your used car auto dealer license and you re not sure which way to pivot to get in. So you can go to DMV directly and they ll tell you.

    Yeah, give us all these things and you pay a little $275 (whatever it is in your state). And they will give you a dealer plate. And they will authorize you to issue temporary tags. But that s an arduous process, that takes lot of time managing, more money (building/car lot, etc) followup, a lot of bureaucracy in layers which you have to go through to enter that route.

    So it is a similar situation that is going on with our program, where you are a dealer under a dealer, you can use your name, your own LLC.     So, you want to make money selling used cars You need an Auto Dealer License to sell cars for profit in this country if you want to legally sell more than 5 cars per year. So you go to your local DMV and inquire how to get an Auto Dealer License fast. These auto dealer license requirements are based on Federal mandates and guidelines (that s why they are all very similar all across the nation).They will say, okay, great. Fine. No problem.

    The DMV clerk will tell you, you need to have a building this size, you need to have a building sign this large. You have to have business insurance. You have to have be bonded for this dollar figure. You have to have a car lot or some kind of physical location. You have to have a telephone landline,etc. etc. This is the basic requirements no matter what state you are in this country. So that is roughly $1100 per month in fixed costs ..and this is just for something basic. A basic office and 2 car storage set up (with utilities and insurance).

    If you need an actual Used Car Auto Dealer License, we do have a Florida Dealer License Package for only $7999 (actual auto dealer license thru the state of Florida). But this is only for high rollers people who are at that level of the business.

    A new car dealer that s all together different story. We are talking about a used car dealer on this website. But when you have your auto dealer license, you are running your dealership. You are running a used car dealership. High value cars. Whatever cars you want.

    So you are on this website because you re thinking about getting your used car auto dealer license and you re not sure which way to pivot to get in. So you can go to DMV directly and they ll tell you.

    Understanding used car dealer bond costs

    The cost of your bond is an annual premium, which is a percentage of the total amount required for your used car dealership. Read on for more details.

    Total bond amount

    The total bond amount sets a cap on the maximum compensation the surety bond can offer. Each state sets their own amount and it can vary from $10,000 (in Alabama) to $100,000 (high-volume dealers in Hawaii).

    States use different criteria to determine what the total bond amount will be. Some have fixed amounts for all used car dealers, others determine it based on the dealer’s volume of sales. If a particular state is experiencing a large number of claims, the total amount can be increased to make sure all claimants are adequately compensated.

    Bond Premiums

    Your used car dealer bond cost is an annual premium, which is a small percentage of the required total amount. Most often the percentage is between 1%-3% if the applicant’s credit score is good or between 3% and 10% for applicants with credit issues. This means the annual cost for a $25,000 used car dealer bond can be as little as $250.

    So what does your bond premium depend on? The most important factors are:

    • Your credit score
    • Professional experience and expertise as a dealer
    • Financial strength of your dealership

    The bond premium will be cheaper if your business is healthy and well-managed. This means you can also work on reducing the cost by improving your credit score, and including financial statements that prove your liquidity.

    Can I get a used car dealer bond with bad credit?

    An applicant with bad credit may have a hard time getting bonded because their credit report issues are perceived as high risk by surety underwriters. Credit issues can mean any of the following:

    • Bankruptcies
    • Past due items

    There are numerous instances of what constitutes a violation of the bond agreement and some of them are state-specific, but here is an overview of common instances that lead to claims against used-car dealers:

    • Odometer tampering, i.e. fraud related to the mileage of the car
    • Hiding the history of the vehicle, also known as title washing
    • Withholding any information that would change the value of the car
    • Not honoring warranties – keep in mind that some states consider oral warranties to be legally binding as well
    • Deceptive advertising – the FTC has guidelines on what constitutes deceptive advertising and you should be well aware of them
    • Financial fraud related to payment plans, leasing and others
    • Withholding information from the state about the sale of a vehicle
    • Not providing a valid title upon selling a vehicle
    • Tax fraud

    Used car dealers should always avoid claims and pay any known claims on time. Failure to do so can make it impossible for them to renew their license.

    DAA Seattle just had a monster week, selling nearly 600 units! The market was rock solid and the volume was huge. Dave Blake and the DAA Seattle team continue to grow and become more and more of a significant player the Pacific Northwest auction market.

    We are 25 years old!

    This coming week, DAA Northwest celebrates its 25th Anniversary in Spokane. Greg and I opened the doors on September 25th and held our Grand Opening Sale on November 11th 1992. We sold 32 units at our first sale, 16 at our second, and then things really started to get tough!

    My relationship with Greg Mahugh did not begin here in Spokane. It started in 5th grade on the baseball field. We have been close friends ever since. Together, we opened the doors in Spokane with the dream of a simple life, raising our families in a nice little town near the great outdoors and running a two-lane auto auction. That was the goal. Here we are 25 years later. We would have never even dreamed, let alone planned for what has happened. The dealer support has been with us since day one. We owe you, the dealers, for all that has happened over the past 25 years. This we know and have never taken for granted.

    Our little organization has grown to markets in Seattle and Kansas City along with Spokane. We had a stint in the Tri-Cities from 1995 until 1998, and in El Paso, Texas from 2010 until 2016. Through it all, Spokane has been our home and the engine that fuels everything.

    We hope you can join us this week for a celebration of 25 years of auctions in Spokane. Our Wednesday sale will begin at 1:00 pm and will be followed at 6:30 by a dinner party and fundraiser at Northern Quest Resort. Thursday, we ll get things started at 9:00 am and will wrap up the day with thousands in post-sale prizes.

    How to get your license: Vehicle dealer

    The applicant/licensee must comply with all applicable laws and rules, even if not covered below.

    Who needs a license?

    Any business or auctioneer who buys or sells at wholesale or retail:

    • New or used cars
    • New or used trucks
    • New or used motor homes

    If you don’t have a dealer license, it’s illegal to:

    • Sell more than 4 vehicles registered to you in any 12 months
    • Buy and sell vehicles for the purpose of making a profit
    • Sell any number of vehicles that aren’t registered to you

    Business site requirements

    Your business site must:

    • Comply with all applicable building codes, zoning, and other land-use ordinances. For more information, please contact your city or county directly.
    • Be located at a commercial property with an enclosed building.
    • Have an exterior sign that is permanently affixed to the land or building with the business name and the type of business (such as auto sales).
    • Have an operating telecommunications system and a phone number listed in directory assistance. A mobile number is acceptable as long as it is listed in directory assistance.
    • Be open from 10 a.m. 4 p.m., five days per week. These hours are referred to as normal business hours. Additional hours and days of operation may be added at your discretion. You must prominently post the hours of operation at the main entrance doors.
    • Have an area to maintain books, records, and files at the business site. If 2 or more vehicle dealer businesses share a location, all records, office facilities, and inventory must be physically separated and clearly identified.

    E-Permits

    All retail vehicle dealers are required to use the E-permits system. Find out more about E-Permits.

    Note: We issue this license, but it’s processed by the Department of Revenue’s Business Licensing Service (BLS). BLS prints it on the business license they provide. They refer to licenses issued by us as endorsements to the business license.

Focusing on what car is right from you can save you a lot of needless running around behind a salesman who’s eager to sell you anything.

    Second, check and compare the MSRP. invoice prices, NADA or KBB used car guides to get an idea of what numbers you can expect to see. Knowing the range of the vehicle you’re interested in makes you more aware if the car your being shown is way over priced or if it’s questionably under priced and you need to ask more questions. Also check competing dealer prices, bringing in a competitors price can put a salesman in the difficult place of trying to one up his competition.

    Third, check your credit score and get pre-approved. Not only does it speed things up for yourself, it will give you a good idea of what you can afford and what your options are. If your credit score is good, you could be more aggressive when negotiating the financing on your car. If your credit score is bad, it may mean you need to re-evaluate your options or consider a bad credit auto loan. Knowing these things ahead of time can save you time and avoid potential embarrassment.

    So now you’re at the car lot and on to the next step. For starters, do not let the salesman play the shell game. Negotiate one point at a time, agree upon it, and move on to the next. We recommend starting with the price of the vehicle you are interested in. Don’t get distracted or let the salesman mix and match deals with your trade in, as what can seem like a good deal for one item is often masking the problem with the rest of the deal. And remember, MSRP is for “Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price”. They can suggest all they want but it doesn’t mean you should pay it.

    After you set the agreed upon price of new vehicle, it is time to talk trade in if you have one. Do you know the value of your trade in? If not a little prior research here can go a long way and is recommended. Also a quick clean up can go a long way towards getting a good price on a trade in. Taking your car in looking like it’s been lived in won’t fetch you top dollar, so toss out that trash in the backseat so you can show off the cars true value. There is a lot of money in used cars; getting a good trade in price can save you as much as a good haggle on your new purchase.

    Finally make sure all the prices are as you agreed to them before you sign. Check you’re financing numbers, does it look high? Banks often give car lots better rates than your average Joe, so if it looks to high it probably is. Financing can be just another way to milk you for more money on a car sale, see if they won’t match your pre-approved banks rate. If they won’t offer you the best deal, use a third party who can. And don’t be afraid to get up and leave or be pressured into a sale, you are in control and with the proper knowledge and best practices you can use that control for your own profit. Happy shopping!
