    Accelerator Pedal Sensors

The Accelerator Pedal sensor indicates the position of the accelerator on vehicle models with electronic throttle control. The APS is basically a throttle position sensor (TPS) with a pedal attached. A Standard Accelerator Pedal Sensors utilize drive-by-wire technology, consistently been first to market in this category and has the APS line to over 150 SKUs with an emphasis on the import applications. As a basic manufacturer, Standard has complete control of the manufacturing process from componentry to finished product. Standard pedal sensors maintain specific installed outputs to match OE rather than adjustable consolidated designs.

Each sensor undergoes rigorous end-of-line testing with thousands of data points to validate output voltages for optimum performance and trouble-free operation.

    Anti-Lock (ABS) Sensors

The anti-lock braking system uses an ABS or wheel sensor to monitor the wheel speed and send this information to the ABS computer. The ABS computer uses this information to prevent the brakes from locking during an emergency stop. If wheel speeds are not equal the computer modulates the anti-lock feature until the speeds are equalized. The ABS sensor is typically located in each wheel hub/rotor on a four channel ABS system. Some rear wheel drive applications have the sensor mounted in the rear differential. A failing sensor can illuminate the vehicle warning light or ABS warning lamp, and may cause failure of the anti-lock braking system to operate safely and properly.

As a basic manufacturer, Standard has complete control of the manufacturing process from componentry to finished product. The Standard ABS sensor line has complete coverage for domestic and import applications.

    Brake Pad Wear Sensors

The Brake Pad Wear sensor, or brake wear indicator, is an added safety feature on many vehicles used to warn a vehicle’s driver if their brake pad’s life becomes too low. Brake Pad Wear sensors are designed to “fail” as brake pads wear. They should be changed whenever the pads are replaced or when the vehicle’s warning light indicates.

Offered in our Intermotor brand, we have the most complete Brake Pad Wear Sensor line in the industry. These are direct OE replacements with perfect fit, finish and function for flawless operation. As a basic manufacturer, Intermotor has complete control of the manufacturing process from componentry to finished product.

    DIS Control Module

A distributorless ignition system (DIS) control module controls current flow to the coils. The DIS module processes sensor inputs about crankshaft position and engine speed to establish ignition timing and sequence.

Standard’s modules undergo extensive testing ensuring better quality, increased confidence, enhanced performance, and improved durability. Standard DIS modules are engineered with flip Chips to provide the best connections and are matched to the thermal expansion properties of our ceramic substrate eliminating failure due to broken connections between the chip and the board. We use double wire bonds to make better connections for greater dependability and longer life, despite intense vibration and other harsh conditions. All Standard DIS modules contain a copper slug heat sink that provides better heat dissipation to prevent damage to the module. The electronic suppression diode (ESD) protects the unit from voltage spikes that could destroy it. Standard’s comprehensive coverage provides the perfect form, fit and function demanded by today’s top technicians.

    Distributor Caps

A premium quality distributor cap could be the component your car needs. Standard distributor caps fit many vehicle makes and models and are equal to or better than the original. Standard caps are made of high dielectric strength, glass/mineral reinforced polyester resin for less carbon tracking, greater resistance to electrical breakdown, and superior performance. Solid brass terminals make better connections and greater resistance to electrical pitting and corrosion. Standard caps simply last longer and perform better. Our Standard distributor caps exhibit superior finishes and provide better ignition system performance. We offer high-quality distributor caps for your automotive needs.

The SSAE 18 Reporting Standard SOC 1 SOC 2 SOC 3 Support and Guidance for SSAE18, SOC 1, SOC 2, and SOC 3 reporting standards

Some organizations have heard of SAS 70, SSAE 16. and soon to be SSAE 18. but, don t really know WHY they need to pay to have a bunch of auditors trounce through their company for a month or two during the year, especially right after their financial audit just finished.
The answer is simple: Many companies will not even think about using your company to perform services for them without a clean Type II Report in place.
Some benefits of having an SSAE 16 performed :

    • Ability to perform outsourcing services for Public Companies.
      • If performing financially significant duties for a Public Company, they are required to use a SSAE 16 qualified provider as it is the only way to give investors assurance over controls that are not performed by the Company in question.
    • Public and Private companies are more likely to trust your organization with their data.
      • If you were to trust a company with your data, you would want complete assurance it will be handled with the utmost care
    • A year round accessible knowledge source (your auditors).
      • As a service organization, large or small, you will always have questions regarding your business and having a set of auditors in place with access to a wide array of business knowledge, it will allow you to bounce your questions and concerns off of a group of trusted individuals.
    • A third party to review your controls and activities to ensure they are functioning appropriately, and give advice on how to improve upon them.
      • Sometimes your internal audit department is good, but, not always as stringent as they should be. This will help to serve as a check on their work, as well as your staff. Additionally, if there were any findings noted, your auditors are in a great position to give you some tricks and tips to improve to ensure everything functions well the following period.
    • Improving performance of the organization.
      • Just the knowledge that a review is being performed of an employee s work that can have far reaching consequences for the company as a whole. No more, Oh, I didn t realize that reviewing user access was THAT important to do this month, sorry , now, everyone knows that if it s not done, the success or failure of the organization could rest upon them.

Think of the SSAE 16 or SSAE-18 audit as an annual investment into your company, increasing potential new clients. productivity and accountability .

This tip is focused on designing controls that reflect the process being testing, if they don t, a headache of massive proportions will be created once testing begins.
What do you do to make sure you don t screw this up? Have as many meetings as it takes to get it right.
What you need to do is sit down with the auditors, the department lead, the main employees responsible for performing the process, and anyone else whom could either play a role in testing or modifying the control in the future. Once that is done, Management should discuss what they determined the control to be and how it should operate, that is then reviewed by the auditors, and then the employees performing the tasks should be reconsulted to verify that the control still reflects their process accurately.
Many times people try to speed this process up and half-ass it, leaving many open items which upon testing could easily blow up into a huge problem. When the control isn t 100% agreed upon prior to testing and a deviation is noted, it s a tough call between failing the control and the ability to adjust it to accurately reflect the process. The problem is modifying a control after testing has begun is not proper and needs to be avoided at all costs.
Locking the controls locked down early on could save weeks in wrapping up your new SSAE 16 Report.
We have seen issues like this cause delays in issuing of the report to the client and running additional fees, since adjusting controls isn t free. Coming from the perspective of the auditor, we can let you know the pitfalls, consequences and how to best navigate the audit process. If you have any comments or questions please leave them below!

A SOC 1 Report (System and Organization Controls Report ) is a report on Controls at a Service Organization which are relevant to user entities’ internal control over financial reporting. The SOC1 Report is what you would have previously considered to be the standard SAS70, complete with a Type I and Type II reports, but falls under the SSAE 16 guidance (and soon to be SSAE 18 ).

Please see the following articles discussing the SSAE 16 guidance and additional information related to the SOC 1 (Type I and Type II) Reports:

In addition to the SOC 1 report which is restricted to controls relevant to an audit of a user entity’s financial statements, the SOC 2 and SOC 3 reports have been created to address controls relevant to operations and compliance and will be discussed in further detail in the future.

Please see the SOC 1 Reporting Guide page for additional information.

SSAE 16 is an enhancement to the current standard for Reporting on Controls at a Service Organization, the SAS70. The changes made to the standard will bring your company, and the rest of the companies in the US, up to date with new international service organization reporting standards, the ISAE 3402. The adjustments made from SAS 70 to SSAE 16 will help you and your counterparts in the US compete on an international level; allowing companies around the world to give you their business with complete confidence .

SSAE16 is now effective as of June 15, 2011, and if you have not made the necessary adjustments required, now is the time to find a quality provider to discuss the proper steps. All organizations are now required to issue their Service Auditor Reports under the SSAE 16 standards in an SOC 1 Report.

The soon to be effective, SSAE-18. is expected to follow a similar reporting structure to the SSAE-16 within a SOC 1 report.

Who Needs an SSAE 16 (SOC 1 ) Audit?

If your Company (the Service Organization ) performs outsourced services that affect the financial statements of another Company (the User Organization ), you will more than likely be asked to provide an SSAE16 Type II Report, especially if the User Organization is publicly traded.
    Some example industries include:

    • Payroll Processing
    • Loan Servicing
    • Data Center /Co-Location/Network Monitoring Services
    • Software as a Service (SaaS )
    • Medical Claims Processors

    What you Need to Know:

Before starting the SSAE 16 process, there are a number of considerations one must take into account that can save considerable time, effort, and money in the long run. Use the following items as a mini checklist for yourself:

    • Does my Company need an SSAE16, or, are we doing it just because someone asked?
    • Reports on the low end can run at least $15,000 a year, will the business lost be less of a burden than the cost of the report itself?
    • Does your company have defined Business Process and IT controls in place, or, will you need assistance developing and implementing them (readiness assessment)?
    • Have you determined the controls in place which affect the outsourced services being provided?
    • Have key stakeholders been defined and included in discussions?

There are many other issues to consider before engaging a CPA firm to help with your SSAE 16, for a more detailed checklist please see The SSAE 16 Checklist

You may have heard SSAE-18 is on the horizon for reports issued as of May 1, 2017. There are some important updates discussed in here: SSAE-18 An Update to SSAE-16 .

As the standard is formalized and the date approaches we will continue to provide more information to help you prepare for these changes.

8 Epic EHR implementations with the biggest price tags in 2015

Investments in EHR systems are undoubtedly costly, but some implementations appear to carry more costs than others.

Implementation costs vary system to system and hospital to hospital. Prices fluctuate based on what types of additional features and modules a hospital selects. And, according to a Politico report, some EHR vendors charge for additional service fees while others don’t. The Politico report indicates for Epic’s 2014 edition software, the Verona, Wis.-based EHR vendor charges a software licensing fee, implementation costs and annual maintenance costs while OpenVistA, developed by Carlsbad, Calif.-based Medsphere, for example, does not.

Even within the subsector of Epic implementations, costs fall across the board. For example, Duke University Health System, based in Durham, N.C. paid approximately $700 million for its Epic EHR (systemwide go-live in 2014) while Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, N.H. paid $80 million (go-live in 2011), according to a Forbes report.

John Halamka, MD, CIO of Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. said in the Politico report that hospitals selecting Epic’s platform are not just buying a product — they are buying a process. BIDMC does not operate on Epic’s EHR; rather, the hospital earlier this year forged a partnership with athenahealth, which included using the Watertown, Mass.-based vendor’s product.

“Epic is selling a methodology; often a lot of manual processes or heterogeneity and standardizing the work,” Dr. Halamka told Politico. “It’s not that they’re buying expensive software, they’re buying a lot of software.”

No matter where the prices come from, the cost of Epic installations are significant. Here are eight of the most costly Epic implementations reported within the past six months. These are working numbers, with some systems having allotted the indicated amounts to implementation projects and others that have already completed installations.

    Partners HealthCare: $1.2 billion
Boston-based Partners HealthCare is one of more recent implementations, going live the first week of June to the tune of $1.2 billion. This is the health system’s biggest investment to date. The implementation process took approximately three years, and in that time, the initial price tag of $600 million doubled.

    LehighValleyHealth Network: $200 million
LVHN started its switch to Epic’s platform in February 2015, but the full transition will take between four and six years. Harry Lukens, CIO of the Allentown, Pa.-based system, told The Morning Call the total investment dedicated to the installation includes software, hardware, data conversion and additional personnel.

    Mayo Clinic: “Hundreds of millions”
In January 2015, Rochester, Minn.-based Mayo Clinic announced it selected Epic’s EHR and revenue cycle management platforms and planned to drop its Cerner and GE Healthcare contracts to do so. The value of the contract was not disclosed by the health system or the vendor, but stock analysts told The Kansas City Star it is worth “hundreds of millions of dollars over several years.” Additionally, the headline of the Star report reads “Cerner loses Mayo Clinic contract worth hundreds of millions of dollars to Epic,” indicating a ballpark estimate of the new contract’s value.

    LaheyHospital Medical Center: $160 million
On March 28, 2015, the Burlington, Mass.-based hospital completed its two-year implementation of Epic’s EHR system. Two months later, Lahey Health said it was laying off 130 people at three hospitals to close the budget gap. In the six months ended March 31, the health system had lost $21 million, partly due to preparatory EHR implementation costs.

    Lifespan: $100 million
Providence, R.I.-based Lifespan announced plans to implement Epic’s EHR in March 2013, and the health system went live April 2015. Lifespan initially projected the implementation to cost $90 million, but in a Rhode Island Public Radio report, John Murphy, MD, executive vice president of physician services, alluded to a total closer to $100 million.

    Erlanger Health System: $97 million
Chattanooga, Tenn.-based Erlanger Health System signed a contract with Epic in May 2015 nearing $100 million. The health system will invest $91 million in capital expenses, but operating expenses will bring the total to $97 million over the next 10 years. Erlanger was deciding between Epic and Cerner’s platform and ultimately chose Epic because the bid was less expensive, CFO Britt Tabor told Times Free Press .

    WheatonFranciscan Healthcare: $54 million
In January 2015, Glendale, Wis.-based Wheaton Franciscan Healthcare announced plans to implement Epic across its hospitals. The system’s affiliated medical group and physician offices have been using Epic’s EHR since September 2012, but providers across the system can only view patient records and not input information. The implementation will create one central EHR platform across the system. Go-lives will begin January 2016. The system expects a return on investment after four years of using the platform.

Saint Francis Medical Center: $43 million
The hospital in Cape Girardeau, Mo. contracted with Epic in February 2015 and expects to go live in July 2016. Saint Francis plans to connect and exchange records with other hospitals in the St. Louis area also using Epic’s system, including SSM Health and Mercy Health.

    Worth noting
A handful of other hospitals and health systems reported signing contracts with Epic this year but did not disclose the costs of the IT projects. Some of these organizations include Arlington Heights, Ill.-based Northwest Community Healthcare, SSM Health St. Mary’s Hospital-Audrain in Mexico, Mo. Oklahoma State University Center for Health Sciences in Tulsa, San Diego-based Scripps Health and St. Louis-based BJC HealthCare.

Editor’s note: An earlier version of this article identified Saint Francis Medical Center as being located in Dexter, Mo. We have updated the article to include the correct location, and we apologize for the error.

Cockroaches are pests throughout the United States. They are annoying and, when abundant, they are also destructive. Cockroaches, also known as waterbugs, croton bugs, or palmetto bugs, destroy food and damage fabrics, book bindings, and other materials.

Due to their wood-eating habits, termites can do great damage to homes and other wooden structures. Their habit of remaining concealed often results in their presence being undetected until severe damaged is done. Once termites have entered a building, they do not limit themselves to wood; they also damage paper, cloth, carpets and more.

The house fly is the most common of all domestic flies, accounting for about 90% of all flies in human habitations, and indeed one of the most widely distributed insects, found all over the world; it is considered a pest that can carry serious diseases. Each female fly can lay approximately 500 eggs in several batches of about 75 to 150.

The term wasp is typically defined as any insect of the order Hymenoptera and suborder Apocrita that is neither a bee nor ant. Almost every pest insect species has at least one wasp species that preys upon it or parasitizes it, making wasps critically important in natural control of their numbers, or natural biocontrol.

Fleas are small (1/16 ), dark, reddish-brown, wingless, blood-sucking insects. Their bodies are laterally compressed, (i.e. flattened side to side) permitting easy movement through the hairs on the host s body. Their legs are long and well adapted for jumping. Ticks are blood-feeding parasites that are often found in tall grass and shrubs where they will wait to attach to a passing host. A tick will attach itself to its host by inserting its chelicerae (cutting mandibles) and hypostome (feeding tube) into the skin. The hypostome is covered with recurved teeth and serves as an anchor. Young ticks have six legs, and mature ticks have eight legs. They vary in size and appearance depending on the species.

Ants are pests around the home because they feed on and contaminate human foods, infest structures, and build unsightly mounds in lawns. In some cases, ants are able to inflict painful bites or stings. Ants do not attack or eat fabrics, leather or wood in houses; however, some species can establish nests in decaying wood in structures.

The mouse usually lives in proximity to humans, in or around houses or fields. Originally native to Asia they have since been spread throughout the world. House mice can transmit diseases, and can damage food and food packaging. It is thought that house mice were the primary reason for the taming of the domestic cat.

Arachnophobia is a fear of spiders or anything reminiscent of spiders, such as webs or spider-like shapes. It is one of the most common specific phobias, and some statistics show that 50 percent of women and 10 percent of men show symptoms. It may be an exaggerated form of an instinctive response that helped early humans to survive.

Lena Dunham’s NYT Op-Ed on the Obamacare Mandate is Based on Two Falsehoods

Lena Dunham, the HBO celebrity and Democratic activist, had an op-ed in the New York Times over the weekend arguing against a regulation under consideration by the Trump administration. According to a leak, conscientious objectors could opt out of the Obamacare mandate that forces American employers to provide insurance that covers contraceptives and some abortifacients with no copayment.

Dunham is certainly entitled to her own opinion, but her New York Times op-ed is premised on two errors of fact. She writes:

[F]or millions of women living with endometriosis, polycystic ovarian syndrome, cystic acne, migraines, uterine abnormalities and a history of ectopic pregnancies, birth control can be a crucial, even lifesaving, medical treatment. While there is no cure for endometriosis, hormonal contraception can control pain and bleeding by stopping or significantly shortening the length of a woman’s period. It helps keep women with the disease happy, healthy and able to work. Considering how little money the government puts into endometriosis research (last year, the National Institutes of Health allocated around $10 million of its $32 billion budget to it), it’s clear that our country already has a dangerous disregard for women with this common condition. But imagine if this disease that affects about one in 10 women of reproductive age were allowed to progress unhindered. Imagine losing these women’s essential contributions to our world because of a treatable illness.
Well, if the Trump administration follows through on its plan to roll back the requirement that insurers cover birth control (revealed in leaked government documents last week), you won’t have to imagine it. The documents outline a chilling proposal that would allow any employer to deny coverage of birth control at any time and for any reason. Women who rely on oral contraception would suddenly be living in a very different reality, one in which some could become disabled as their disease progressed.

It is simply false for Dunham to claim that the draft regulation would “allow any employer to deny coverage of birth control at any time and for any reason.” Pages 119 and 120 of the draft regulation clearly state that the “religious beliefs” or “moral convictions” of conscientious objectors must be “sincerely held.” The draft regulation does not say “any employer” can opt out for “any reason.” Limited-government conservatives would of course prefer a simple repeal of this federal mandate and many others, but that’s not what’s being considered.

As the lawyer who represents the Little Sisters of the Poor, an order of nuns that serves the elderly poor and objects to Obamacare’s contraceptive mandate, recently told reporters: Under the proposed regulation the government would determine whether the religious beliefs and moral convictions are “sincerely held” the “same exact way they determine whether religious or moral objections are made in good faith under lots of different federal statutes and regulations.”

The lawyer, Mark Rienzi of the Becket Fund, added that “every day courts engage in analysis to figure out whether someone has a sincere religious belief or somebody’s just trying to dodge military service, or get out of doing something in their work, or if a prisoner is just trying to trick their way into better food rather than having a sincere religious exemption.”

Before the mandate, the vast majority of private insurance plans covered contraceptives, and the federal government spent hundreds of millions of dollars on contraceptives under Medicaid and the Title X program. Dunham claims that “for women living near or below the poverty line, [the regulation] would be disastrous, jeopardizing their ability to work and provide for their families,” but the regulation wouldn’t affect anyone benefiting from Medicaid or Title X.

According to Gallup, 89 percent of Americans believe birth control is morally acceptable, so we are only talking about a tiny percentage of American employers who might opt out from the mandate. As Politico reported in October 2016, in the two years since the Supreme Court ruled that Obamacare’s contraceptive mandate was a violation of the Religious Freedom Restoration Act, “only 52 companies and nonprofit organizations, have told the government they plan to opt out of Obamacare’s requirement to cover birth control because it violates their religious beliefs.” Corporations are not going to state false moral or religious objections to birth control 1) because they could be subject to charges of perjury and 2) because it’s widely believed that birth control subsidies save insurers and employers money.

That brings us to the second false (if implicit) premise of Dunham’s op-ed, which is that Catholics object to use hormonal contraceptives to treat diseases. The first result of a simple Google search would have revealed to Dunham that that’s not true. “Catholic teaching does not oppose the use of hormonal medications—such as those found in chemical contraceptives—for legitimate medical purposes,” reads the website of the United States Council of Catholic Bishops. And as a Supreme Court brief on behalf of Catholic plaintiffs opposed to the contraceptive mandate states: “Consistent with Catholic teaching, in certain circumstances Petitioners’ plans cover products commonly used as contraceptives when prescribed for noncontraceptive, medically necessary purposes.”

If Dunham wants to argue that Catholic nuns should be forced to violate their religious beliefs so that middle- and high-income women don’t have to pay $9 a month for contraception, she has every right to do that. But Dunham and the New York Times should not misrepresent what the Trump administration is actually considering and what Catholics actually believe.
