Troubleshoot Your Truck s A, auto air conditioning.#Auto #air #conditioning

Keep Your Truck’s A/C in Top Shape

Auto air conditioning

You don t have to be a technician to monitor your pickup truck s air conditioning system. There are several things you can do to help keep your truck s A/C out of the repair shop.

A/C Parts Under the Hood

A drive belt makes your truck s air conditioning compressor turn, which keeps the cooling refrigerant circulating through the system. When the belt is worn, stretched or cracked it can slip or break, stopping the compressor and shutting down the A/C.

Check the belt periodically to make sure it s in good shape.

An A/C drive belt and compressor are sometimes hard to locate, especially under the hood of newer vehicles where covers and other components hide them from direct view. The next time you take the vehicle to the shop for an oil change, ask the technician to show you where the A/C belt and compressor are located.

Air Conditioning Condenser

Your truck s air conditioning condenser is located in front of the radiator, and it actually resembles the radiator. Air flowing across cooling fins removes heat from the refrigerant as the refrigerant circulates through the condenser.

If the condenser s fins become damaged or plugged with debris, air flow is restricted, and the refrigerant isn t cooled. Restriction can also cause the vehicle to overheat. Check the fins periodically to make sure they are clean and in good condition.

Signs of Air Conditioning Problems Inside the Truck

  • Wet carpeting on hot, humid days can indicate a clogged air conditioner drain. When the drain is working correctly you ll see a good amount of water dripping onto the pavement under the vehicle after you park.
  • A vibration or abnormal noise when the fan is on could indicate debris in the blower fan (mice like to build nests in fans).
  • A reduced amount of air coming out of the vents, especially if it happens after driving for awhile, might mean the air conditioner s evaporator is freezing up.
  • A musty or mildewy odor when the fan is first turned on, or all the time when the system is running, can indicate that mold or mildew is growing in the evaporator box.

Reduce the buildup of mold and mildew by turning the A/C recirculation switch off when you park the truck. If your vehicle doesn t have a recirculation switch, turn the A/C switch away from the Max Air position every time you shut off the engine.

Some A/Cs will still develop a musty odor, but many service departments offer an evaporator cleaning procedure to eliminate the smell.

    Using Your Truck s A/C

    • When you get into a hot car, roll your windows down a little for the first few blocks. If you have a recirculation button, make sure it s turned off. After the hot air is gone, turn recirculate on.
    • We re all concerned with fuel mileage, but modern auto air conditioning systems are pretty efficient. Turning the A/C off results in minimal gas savings.

If you discover a problem that you can t fix yourself, take the vehicle to a trusted technician.

The auto air conditioning compressor is called the heart of the air conditioning system. It is called so for the function it carries out in the system. The main function of the auto air conditioning compressor is to control and regulate the flow of refrigerant throughout the system. Located in front of the engine, the auto air conditioning compressor separates the high pressure and the low pressure sides of the air conditioning system. Working in a closed loop system, the auto air conditioning compressor draws the refrigerant from the evaporator in the inlet side, compresses and pushes it to the condenser in the high pressure side of the system. When there is any problem with the working of the air conditioning compressor then you need to look into it immediately as it may affect the entire cooing system.

All of our parts come with Free Shipping and No Core Deposit. No one can match that. Most of our compressors have the clutch included to avoid the trouble of installing a clutch.

The High-pressure Side

All automotive air conditioning systems are (nearly) closed loops with a high-pressure side and low-pressure side. We’ll start with the high-pressure side as it leads from the engine to the passenger compartment:

Compressor: The compressor is a pump driven by a belt attached to the engine’s crankshaft. When the refrigerant is drawn into the compressor, it is in a low-pressure gaseous form. Once the gas is inside the pump, the compressor lives up to its name. The belt drives the pump, which puts the gas under pressure and forces it out to the condenser. Compressors cannot compress liquids, only gasses. You’ll see as we go through the system that there are other parts whose job it is to capture any water that accidentally makes into the AC loop.

Condenser: The condenser is basically a radiator, and it serves the same purpose as the one in your car: to radiate heat out of the system. The refrigerant enters the condenser as a pressurized gas from the compressor. The process of pressurizing the gas and moving it to the condenser creates heat, but air flowing around the twisting tubes of the condenser cool the refrigerant down until it forms a liquid again. Imagine steam cooling down and condensing back into water, and you’ve got the idea. The liquid refrigerant is now a high-pressure liquid and nearly ready to cool the car.

Receiver-Dryer: But first, the refrigerant needs to be prepped for the evaporator. As it moves out of the condenser, the liquid goes through a little reservoir installed in the line. This receiver-dryer contains desiccants. small granules that attract water. You’ve seen packets of desiccants in shoeboxes, where they do the same thing: attract water from the air to keep new shoes fresh and ready for your feet. (They’re usually labeled Do not eat. ) In the receiver-dryer, they remove any water that has entered the system. If the water is allowed to remain and possibly form ice crystals, it can damage the air conditioning system.

That’s enough high-pressure for anyone, so let’s move on to the low-pressure side of the system.

New Natural Gas Air Conditioning Is Very Efficient

QUESTION: My old central air conditioner still works, but I wonder if I should replace it with a super-efficient one. How much can I expect to save on my electric bills? Are the new natural gas cooling units efficient?

ANSWER: Your old air conditioner probably has a SEER (efficiency ratio) of about 6 or 7. A new super-efficient electric unit has a SEER of 15. Installing one can cut your cooling costs by more than 50%. New natural gas central air conditioning units have an equivalent SEER as high as 27.

New super-efficient electric air conditioning units use two-speed compressors and variable-speed indoor blowers. On the low energy saving speed (runs at high speed only on the hottest days), each cycle run time is longer. Indoor temperature swings between on-off cycles are virtually eliminated.

The air gently circulates almost continuously and noise is reduced. With soft start, the initial burst of warm (cold in the winter) air from the ducts is eliminated. This is ideal for allergy sufferers because air cleaners are more effective and humidity levels, mold, mites, etc. are reduced.

Cincinnati air conditioning

The indoor blowers use special electrically commutated motors. These not only provide true variable-speed operation for better comfort, but they use less than half as much electricity as standard blower motors.

The most efficient single-speed air conditioning units use scroll compressors. Scroll compressors have fewer moving parts than standard reciprocating piston compressors. Without pistons and valves, scroll compressors are quieter too.

As scroll compressors wear over years of operation, they seal better and operate smoother than when they were new. Their basic design is reliable, and they should continue to operate at high efficiency levels for many years.

If you have natural gas, there are gas-powered air conditioning units that use a no-compressor absorption process. These also heat your house in the winter.

Another super-efficient gas central air conditioning and heating unit uses a compressor. With an equivalent SEER of 27, it can cut cooling costs by 75%. It looks just like a standard electric central air conditioning unit outdoors and is quieter.

A small natural gas-powered engine runs the compressor. Since an engine can run at any speed, its microprocessor continually, fine-tunes the cooling output (17 levels) to the precise cooling needs of your house.

In the winter, this year-round gas air conditioning unit heats your house at more than 100% efficiency. It combines the heat pump principal with the excess heat from running the engine. This can cut your heating costs by half too.

What Sun Room Design Is Most Efficient?

Q: I am planning the addition of a sun room to my house. I will use it for growing some plants and hope to get some free solar heating in the winter from it. Should I get one with a slanted or vertical front?

A: Get one with a vertical or near vertical front. Although the slanted front designs are usually less expensive, they tend to overheat in the summer, even in northern climates.

Cincinnati air conditioning

If you plan to use your sun space to help heat your house in the winter, include adequate solar mass. This is often accomplished with a heavy brick or concrete floor. You will also need a fan to move the warm air indoors.
