A paralegal meeting the minimum criteria for the exam should be able to use logical thought processes, elimination of incorrect answers and their expertise in the basic legal principles to correctly answer the test questions.

NFPA has developed many study tools to assist candidates preparing for the exam. Even an experienced candidate should thoroughly review the PACE Study Manual published by NFPA (available at www.paralegals.org) prior to taking the exam. Each chapter includes sample test questions with detailed explanations of the logical process to deduce the correct response.

Examinees also should review other sources, including paralegal textbooks, seminar materials, flash cards and bar charts for law students, and paraпїЅlegal journals such as The National Paralegal Reporter and Legal Assistant Today. In addition, NFPA offers a 50-question online practice exam that simulates test conditions.

NFPA encourages candidates to participate in a study group if possible. Study groups are organized at the local level, although NFPA can assist by providing sample guidelines, a sample syllabus and other information to help the study groups prepare for the exam. Study groups can be as formal or informal as the participants want. NFPA recommends that study groups meet at least once a week and follow the suggested syllabus over a seven- to eight-week period, although they can meet more often or less often. The group can be taught by members taking turns on the various study areas, or the group leader can solicit speakers from the legal community.

Study groups donпїЅt work for all paralegals. Many find it impossible to study any other way but individually. Recognizing that study groups are not an option for many paralegals, NFPA partnered with the American Institute for Paralegal Studies to offer a seven-week, online study course for PACE. This review course includes mentoring, discussions, homework assignments and online lectures, and ultimately provides a structured form of study. It also encourages a disciplined approach to study that many paralegals find difficult to maintain if they study on their own. The online course is available to anyone with an Internet connection and can be accessed any time. Many RPs credit the course for their success on the exam. RPs must meet CLE requirements, which include ethics training, to maintain their certification. RPs must renew their certification every two years and provide evidence of at least 12 hours of CLE (approved by the CLE coordinator on a case-by-case basis unless the CLE credits were obtained from a previously approved provider, e.g. bar associations, colleges and universities, etc.). At least one hour of CLE must be in ethics.

Making the Commitment

The single most important resource a PACE candidate can take into the test facility is the desire to become an RP. Making the commitment to take PACE is not something to be taken lightly or forced on anyone. The exam is voluntary, and candidates must be in the proper frame of mind to succeed. They must be confident of their skills and knowledge, but shouldnпїЅt approach the exam in an overconfident manner either.

Why should a paralegal take PACE? The reasons are as varied as the 500 plus RPs who have passed the exam to date, but they generally fall into the following categories:

Career paralegals want to validate their expertise by taking a nationally recognized certification exam;

In the absence of regulation, or with regulation on the horizon, paralegals want to establish their own identifiable standards of professional excellence;

National certification provides a sense of professional accomplishment;

Certified paralegals can gain recogпїЅnition and respect from peers;

Certified paralegals can enhance their marketability and stand apart from the rest of the uncertified paralegal workforce; and

Some employers offer higher salary levels or bonuses for certification.

Paralegals who face their fears and pass the exam gain a huge sense of professional pride and accomplishment. They are authorized to use the trademarked phrase пїЅPACE Registered
ParalegalпїЅ or пїЅRP.пїЅ Some RPs enjoy increased pay, promotions or new job opportunities. Some find themselves in positions of additional responsibility within their place of employment and take on leadership roles within the paralegal community. At a minimum, many new RPs note the increased peer recognition that comes almost instantly with the announcement of their certification.

One of the most important reasons to become an RP is that you want to become certified. Having a positive attitude is as critical to passing this exam as work experience and study. When it comes to test time, if possible, find a place to stay near the exam site the night before the exam so you donпїЅt have to rush in on the morning of the test. Allow yourself the luxury of being able to do some last minute review the night before without staying up late.

Here are some additional recommendations:

Take vacation time the week before the test to prepare.

Transcribe handwritten notes from study group classes and create flash cards for quick and easy review.

Study a little at a time and donпїЅt focus on the whole exam.

Be prepared physically as well as mentally by getting plenty of sleep before the exam and eating well.

How to Get Your Foot in the Door

Health informatics (the fancy term for the study, analysis, and management of health information and data) isn’t just coding and billing. There’s a huge range of positions that support healthcare providers and help them run their practices.

If you can’t get into coding right away, try working the office or front desk of a physician. Make connections with the doctors and provider offices you visit on a regular basis and see if they’re hiring or if they know of someone who is. Clerical work might seem like a dead-end, but this type of work demonstrates a commitment to the field and hands-on experience with how the business of healthcare works.

You can also look for work in medical records. Like working at a receptionist or front office position, it’s a slightly indirect way of getting into coding, but you’re familiarity with the provider’s office will serve you well. You can also look for work through a temp agency, though your success there may vary.

Don’t discount volunteering or job shadowing, either. While you don’t want to work for too long for free, volunteering at a provider’s office can give you some first-hand experience and demonstrates your interest. Job shadowing is another way of getting a great look at the business from the inside. If you have a relationship with a professional biller or coder, just ask them if you can trail them for a day. You’ll learn more in a day of watching how a biller works than you would in a week in the classroom.

One of the best ways to get your foot in the door and get professional experience is through an internship. These, like many coding positions they lead up to, can be scarce.

Where to Look for a Job or Internship

There are a variety of good job resources for medical billing and coding. You can find internships on third-party aggregator sites like LookSharp or you can search for openings via LinkedIn.

Some of the best resources for finding new jobs are the professional organizations that we mentioned in the previous course: the American Association of Professional Coders (AAPC) and the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA).

We talked at length in the last Section about preparing for the AAPC’s CPC exam. If you’re looking to take that test at some point in the future, it makes sense to join the AAPC now, especially if you can take advantage of their student rate, which is just $70 a year. Membership in either of these professional organizations will grant you contacts and connections to coders and billers all over the country. Both of these organizations also have excellent job boards and provide lots of free job resources for new health information professionals.

Another option for those fresh out of school is to take the CPC exam right away, without the two years recommended work experience. It will be a challenge, but if you’re confident in your schooling and your skills, you should be able to pass the exam. Once you have passed, you can take part in the CPC Apprentice program. You won’t be a fully certified coder, but you’ll have a leg up on the rest of the uncertified competition. Plus, once you do find a coding job, you can use that as a means of gathering work experience to put toward your full certification.

How to Interview for a Job

Firstly, you’ll want to do your research. Learn a little bit about the company you plan on applying to, and bring that to bear in your interview. You’ll want to demonstrate how your particular skills can better the company, and how your career goals could align with the goals of the company.

Be prepared to get tested. No one’s going to plunk down a stack of multiple-choice problems, but they very well may test you on vocabulary and medical terminology. You may have to work through some hypothetical patient interaction scenarios, in which you explain how you’d communicate with a patient who, let’s say, is behind on their payments.

Speak to your experience, especially when it comes to coding or billing software. It’s good to ask your interviewer some questions as well—What type of practice management program do you use here? What’s your average case volume? Ask practical, serious-minded questions and base your responses to later questions on the answers.

It’s also good to state your goals for the future. If you’re a non-certified biller or coder, you should explain how you’re interested in earning a certification in the near future.

Even with these tips in mind, it won’t always be easy to land your first coding or billing job. Just remember to be patient and persistent, and you should do fine.

What is a Nursing Assistant?

3. How you will learn

Full-time Study
In full time mode, you will learn through a combination of lectures, seminars and workshop sessions. These comprise of a mix of group study, discussion, simulation and presentations of findings by teams and individuals. You will work as an individual and also as part of a team on case studies, team activities, presentations and discussions.

Access to our virtual learning environment, CampusMoodle. is also provided giving you access from home to learning materials (including videos, e-books and journals).

Distance Learning
Our supported distance learning mode of delivery allows you to study online from any location and is designed to fit in around your work commitments. You will be taught and supported by experienced industry professionals who will recreate the same challenging interactive format of the on-campus courses for those studying at a distance.

4. Entry requirements

  • Applicants normally hold a 2:2 undergraduate honours degree or its equivalent in any subject discipline.
  • Applicants with a lower degree classification and/or relevant work experience will be considered on a case by case basis.

International students who do not meet our direct entry requirements for this course can gain additional entry points through our International College at Robert Gordon University.

English Language

Applicants whose first language is not English should have an IELTS of 6.5 overall, with no component lower than 5.5, or an equivalent.

Orthopedic Surgeon Education & Training

To become an orthopedic surgeon, candidates must complete an undergraduate program and 4 years of medical school, resulting in a medical degree. Training may include a full orthopedic rotation during medical school.

After graduation, physicians must complete a 5-year residency program. Residency program requirements usually include 4 years of orthopedic surgery training and 1 year of training in general surgery, pediatrics, or internal medicine.

Orthopedic Surgeon Board Certification

Board certification requires an orthopedic surgeon to complete training in a residency program, practice in the field of orthopedic surgery for 2 years, and pass an examination (written and oral). The American Board of Orthopedic Surgery (ABOS) tests and certifies eligible physicians in the specialty field of orthopedic surgery.

To maintain certification, orthopedic surgeons certified after 1986 must complete 120 hours of continuing medical education (CME), must undergo peer review, and must pass a written or oral examination every 7 to 10 years.

Hand Surgery

Orthopedic surgeons may subspecialize in hand surgery. These candidates must complete the following requirements:

  • One additional year of education
  • Endorsement of the program director
  • Peer review
  • Document a minimum number of hand surgeries
  • Pass a written examination

Upon completion of these requirements, the surgeon is awarded a Certificate of Added Qualifications in Surgery of the Hand by the ABOS. Surgeons must be recertified in this subspecialty every 10 years.

Emergency Nursing Pediatric Course (ENPC)

Accurate assessment of a child with an acute illness or injury requires special knowledge and skills. ENA s two-day Emergency Nursing Pediatric Course is designed to provide the core-level pediatric knowledge and psychomotor skills needed to care for pediatric patients in the emergency setting.

The course presents a systematic assessment model, integrates the associated anatomy, physiology and pathophysiology, and identifies appropriate interventions. ENPC is the only pediatric emergency nursing course written by pediatric nurse experts.

ENPC uses a variety of formats, including online learning, lectures, videos, group discussion and hands-on skill stations, that encourage you to integrate your psychomotor abilities into a patient situation in a risk-free setting.

Educating All Students (EAS)

  • This test consists of selected-response items and constructed-response items. Each constructed-response item will share scenario-based stimulus material with several selected-response items.
  • The selected-response items count for 70% of the total test score and the constructed-response items count for 30% of the total test score. Each selected-response item counts the same toward the total test score. The percentage of the total test score derived from each of the constructed-response items.
  • The total testing time is 135 minutes. Candidates are free to set their own pace during the test administration. The following estimates were used to determine the total test time:
  • Each constructed-response item is designed with the expectation of a response up to 10 minutes.

Teacher Performance Assessment (EdTPA)

The new edTPA (Teacher Performance Assessment) requirements focus on five key dimensions of teaching: planning, instruction, assessment, written commentary about teaching practice, and academic language. The new rules are in effect in New York State for the spring 2014 graduating class and thereafter.As a performance-based assessment, completion of the requirements are embedded in the student-teaching classroom experience (usually in the last semester of a candidate s program).

The assessments include rigorous written commentary, video submission, and assessments as evidence of teaching skill, but more importantly of student learning.

Each credential (content) area has its own Handbook that includes details and guidance about meeting your specific certification requirements. You will have access to your credential area handbook through your edTPA Taskstream account.

Content Specialty Tests (CSTs)

The CSTs (except those for languages other than English) consist of multiple-choice questions and a written assignment. The CSTs for languages other than English include recorded listening and/or speaking components and writing components. The American Sign Language CST includes video-recorded signing components. CSTs measure knowledge and skills in the content area of the candidate’s field of certification. Refer to Test Selection for information about specific CST that you are required to take and pass.

Bilingual Education Assessments (BEAs)

The BEAs consists of multiple-choice questions and constructed-response assignments. They include recorded listening and speaking components in English and include listening, speaking, reading, and writing components in the target language. The BEAs are required of candidates seeking a bilingual education extension to a certificate. Refer to Test Selection for information about specific BEAs .
