Online medical billing and coding certification

In order to become a professional coder in a medical facility or office, an individual should become AAPC Certified. This protects the medical provider from non-compliance and down-coding that can lead to serious legal consequences and significant fines. Our courses will help you achieve AAPC Coding Certification so that you can become a professional employee in a number of medical settings.

The current Program being offered towards AAPC certification is the AAPC Professional Medical Coding Program CPC. We recommend completing this program within 18 months from the time you enroll. If circumstances deem it necessary, there are transfer options available to you. The average time required to complete this program is 18 months for the complete program including all courses. The CPC course prepares you to sit for the American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC) National Certification Exam. The CPC Course usually only takes 6 months to complete on its own if that is all you need to take. Upon taking the AAPC Certification Examination and passing the exam with a minimum score of 70% you will receive your AAPC Certified Professional Coder Certification from the AAPC.

At LS Coding and Education LLC, we provide students with the AAPC Professional Medical Coding Curriculum textbook needed to attain coding certification in addition to the continuing education classes required for CPC’s. Job Outlook for AAPC Professional Certified Coders

According to the United States Department of Labor Bureau of Labor and Statistics, the employment of professional coders and health information technicians is expected to have a 20 percent increase through 2018 as a result of the increasing number of medical tests, procedures and treatments that will be performed. This is a great deal more than other occupations are expected to grow. The population is growing older, also increasing the occurrence of health-related problems.

There is also a relationship between the increase in electronic health records and the number of professional coders needed to take care of the related responsibilities that will come with electronic data management.

A Paralegal s Study Guide #paralegal #certification #exams, #paralegal, #legal #assistant, #paralegal #advanced #competency #exam, #certified #legal #assistant #exam

#

A paralegal meeting the minimum criteria for the exam should be able to use logical thought processes, elimination of incorrect answers and their expertise in the basic legal principles to correctly answer the test questions.

NFPA has developed many study tools to assist candidates preparing for the exam. Even an experienced candidate should thoroughly review the PACE Study Manual published by NFPA (available at www.paralegals.org) prior to taking the exam. Each chapter includes sample test questions with detailed explanations of the logical process to deduce the correct response.

Examinees also should review other sources, including paralegal textbooks, seminar materials, flash cards and bar charts for law students, and paraпїЅlegal journals such as The National Paralegal Reporter and Legal Assistant Today. In addition, NFPA offers a 50-question online practice exam that simulates test conditions.

NFPA encourages candidates to participate in a study group if possible. Study groups are organized at the local level, although NFPA can assist by providing sample guidelines, a sample syllabus and other information to help the study groups prepare for the exam. Study groups can be as formal or informal as the participants want. NFPA recommends that study groups meet at least once a week and follow the suggested syllabus over a seven- to eight-week period, although they can meet more often or less often. The group can be taught by members taking turns on the various study areas, or the group leader can solicit speakers from the legal community.

Study groups donпїЅt work for all paralegals. Many find it impossible to study any other way but individually. Recognizing that study groups are not an option for many paralegals, NFPA partnered with the American Institute for Paralegal Studies to offer a seven-week, online study course for PACE. This review course includes mentoring, discussions, homework assignments and online lectures, and ultimately provides a structured form of study. It also encourages a disciplined approach to study that many paralegals find difficult to maintain if they study on their own. The online course is available to anyone with an Internet connection and can be accessed any time. Many RPs credit the course for their success on the exam. The review course is offered several times a year, and more information is available at www.paralegals.org/displaycommon.cfm?an=1 subarticlenbr=125.

RPs must meet CLE requirements, which include ethics training, to maintain their certification. RPs must renew their certification every two years and provide evidence of at least 12 hours of CLE (approved by the CLE coordinator on a case-by-case basis unless the CLE credits were obtained from a previously approved provider, e.g. bar associations, colleges and universities, etc.). At least one hour of CLE must be in ethics.

Making the Commitment

The single most important resource a PACE candidate can take into the test facility is the desire to become an RP. Making the commitment to take PACE is not something to be taken lightly or forced on anyone. The exam is voluntary, and candidates must be in the proper frame of mind to succeed. They must be confident of their skills and knowledge, but shouldnпїЅt approach the exam in an overconfident manner either.

Why should a paralegal take PACE? The reasons are as varied as the 500 plus RPs who have passed the exam to date, but they generally fall into the following categories:

Career paralegals want to validate their expertise by taking a nationally recognized certification exam;

In the absence of regulation, or with regulation on the horizon, paralegals want to establish their own identifiable standards of professional excellence;

National certification provides a sense of professional accomplishment;

Certified paralegals can gain recogпїЅnition and respect from peers;

Certified paralegals can enhance their marketability and stand apart from the rest of the uncertified paralegal workforce; and

Some employers offer higher salary levels or bonuses for certification.

Paralegals who face their fears and pass the exam gain a huge sense of professional pride and accomplishment. They are authorized to use the trademarked phrase пїЅPACE Registered
ParalegalпїЅ or пїЅRP.пїЅ Some RPs enjoy increased pay, promotions or new job opportunities. Some find themselves in positions of additional responsibility within their place of employment and take on leadership roles within the paralegal community. At a minimum, many new RPs note the increased peer recognition that comes almost instantly with the announcement of their certification.

One of the most important reasons to become an RP is that you want to become certified. Having a positive attitude is as critical to passing this exam as work experience and study. There are many resources to help prepare for the exam. With proper preparation and the right motivation, itпїЅs possible to pass PACE. For more information about PACE, please visit the NFPA Web site at www.paralegals.org and click on пїЅPACE/RP.пїЅ

By Stacey Hunt, CLA, CAS

When it comes to test time, if possible, find a place to stay near the exam site the night before the exam so you donпїЅt have to rush in on the morning of the test. Allow yourself the luxury of being able to do some last minute review the night before without staying up late.

Here are some additional recommendations:

Take vacation time the week before the test to prepare.

Transcribe handwritten notes from study group classes and create flash cards for quick and easy review.

Study a little at a time and donпїЅt focus on the whole exam.

Be prepared physically as well as mentally by getting plenty of sleep before the exam and eating well.

Outside the classroom, UMA’s career services team gets you interview ready so you can start your new career.

How to Get Your Foot in the Door

Health informatics (the fancy term for the study, analysis, and management of health information and data) isn’t just coding and billing. There’s a huge range of positions that support healthcare providers and help them run their practices.

If you can’t get into coding right away, try working the office or front desk of a physician. Make connections with the doctors and provider offices you visit on a regular basis and see if they’re hiring or if they know of someone who is. Clerical work might seem like a dead-end, but this type of work demonstrates a commitment to the field and hands-on experience with how the business of healthcare works.

You can also look for work in medical records. Like working at a receptionist or front office position, it’s a slightly indirect way of getting into coding, but you’re familiarity with the provider’s office will serve you well. You can also look for work through a temp agency, though your success there may vary.

Don’t discount volunteering or job shadowing, either. While you don’t want to work for too long for free, volunteering at a provider’s office can give you some first-hand experience and demonstrates your interest. Job shadowing is another way of getting a great look at the business from the inside. If you have a relationship with a professional biller or coder, just ask them if you can trail them for a day. You’ll learn more in a day of watching how a biller works than you would in a week in the classroom.

One of the best ways to get your foot in the door and get professional experience is through an internship. These, like many coding positions they lead up to, can be scarce.

Where to Look for a Job or Internship

There are a variety of good job resources for medical billing and coding. You can find internships on third-party aggregator sites like LookSharp or you can search for openings via LinkedIn.

Some of the best resources for finding new jobs are the professional organizations that we mentioned in the previous course: the American Association of Professional Coders (AAPC) and the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA).

We talked at length in the last Section about preparing for the AAPC’s CPC exam. If you’re looking to take that test at some point in the future, it makes sense to join the AAPC now, especially if you can take advantage of their student rate, which is just $70 a year. Membership in either of these professional organizations will grant you contacts and connections to coders and billers all over the country. Both of these organizations also have excellent job boards and provide lots of free job resources for new health information professionals.

Another option for those fresh out of school is to take the CPC exam right away, without the two years recommended work experience. It will be a challenge, but if you’re confident in your schooling and your skills, you should be able to pass the exam. Once you have passed, you can take part in the CPC Apprentice program. You won’t be a fully certified coder, but you’ll have a leg up on the rest of the uncertified competition. Plus, once you do find a coding job, you can use that as a means of gathering work experience to put toward your full certification.

How to Interview for a Job

Firstly, you’ll want to do your research. Learn a little bit about the company you plan on applying to, and bring that to bear in your interview. You’ll want to demonstrate how your particular skills can better the company, and how your career goals could align with the goals of the company.

Be prepared to get tested. No one’s going to plunk down a stack of multiple-choice problems, but they very well may test you on vocabulary and medical terminology. You may have to work through some hypothetical patient interaction scenarios, in which you explain how you’d communicate with a patient who, let’s say, is behind on their payments.

Speak to your experience, especially when it comes to coding or billing software. It’s good to ask your interviewer some questions as well—What type of practice management program do you use here? What’s your average case volume? Ask practical, serious-minded questions and base your responses to later questions on the answers.

It’s also good to state your goals for the future. If you’re a non-certified biller or coder, you should explain how you’re interested in earning a certification in the near future.

Even with these tips in mind, it won’t always be easy to land your first coding or billing job. Just remember to be patient and persistent, and you should do fine.

The Georgia CNA competency exam is administered by Promissor. You have to schedule and then take the certification exam at one of their available regional locations. The CNA exam costs $107 if you choose to take the written and skills examinations, or $117 if you select the oral and skills examinations. What is a Nursing Assistant?

A CNA is an entry level, certified healthcare worker. To obtain CNA certification. a nursing assistant trainee must complete a series of courses which teach the student basic skills needed to assist with patient care. A nurse aide is knowledgeable about client safety and transportation, assisting with activities of daily living, communicating with clients and nursing staff, performing basic procedures such as taking vital signs and weighing, and recording intake and output. A certified nursing assistant spends the majority of their working time at the patient’s bedside, providing comfort, hygiene, and support.

State approved CNA training programs teach nurse aide trainees how to become competent care givers. The theoretical section of a nursing assistant program is augmented by the clinical portion, by reinforcing and practicing the knowledge gained in the classroom. The length of a nurse aide course depends on the facility providing the training. Some programs may require as little as three weeks to complete, while others may take two to three months. Fast paced courses are not for everyone, and students have the option to enroll in lengthier programs such as those offered by community colleges. A nurse aide trainee who completes the training is eligible to take the CNA exam. Passing this important examination results in certification and listing on the state nurse aide registry .

Employment opportunities for certified nursing assistants are numerous. The skills of a CNA are needed especially in hospitals, long term care facilities, and rehabilitation centers. Other nursing assistant job opportunities exist in the community, such as Home Health Aide. Hospitals may offer educational opportunities and financial incentives to nursing assistants who wish to continue their education and become licensed vocational nurses, or registered nurses.

Is an Associates degree enough to make me a competitive job candidate?

Yes. An Associates degree coupled with ARDMS certification and exemplary feedback from your clinical rotations will make you a very successful job candidate in a field that is expected to experience 44% growth within the next decade (Source: Bureau of Labor Statistics). Typically higher education, such as a Bachelors Degree in Ultrasound, is recommended for those who wish to further their careers to leadership/managerial roles. Fortinet Certification Testing

As companies around the world continue to invest in their security infrastructures, they look for ways to verify the knowledge and skills of their network security staff. In response, Fortinet offers an 8-level certification program designed for technical professionals to validate their network security skills and experience with Fortinet products and services.

    Programs

    NSE 4

NSE4 designation certifies that individuals have the expertise necessary to manage day-to-day configuration, monitoring, and operation of FortiGate devices to support specific corporate network security policies.

The NSE 4 exam content is covered in the FortiGate I and FortiGate II courses, which are the recommended courses to prepare for the exam. NSE 4 certification replaces FCNSA and FCNSP certifications, combining FortiGate skills assessment into one exam.

    Criminal Justice Paralegal Programs
    (found programs from 466 schools)

Welcome to the most complete directory on the Web of Paralegal programs. It contains all the nationally accredited programs, from 466 schools across the country.

Lawyers would have a lot of trouble getting anything done without the help of a trusty paralegal. From conducting valuable research in legal cases to filling out and filing necessary paperwork, paralegals have a hand in almost every aspect of the justice system. Paralegals, sometimes referred to as legal assistants, can work in a variety of areas, including law firms, corporate legal departments, and government agencies.

    Paralegal Job Description

No matter where a paralegal works, his or her duties will always be tailored to a single goal: serving as an invaluable support system for the lawyers he or she assists. A paralegal has to be able to multitask, as most paralegals have a lot of duties to juggle in any given day. At the beginning of a case, a paralegal’s work usually entails documenting and organizing the facts concerning the case and performing legal research. This research can later help lawyers determine how best to plead their client’s case. Paralegals are also responsible for writing legal correspondence. What’s more, the paralegal is usually responsible for keeping all of this important paperwork organized.

    Paralegal Requirements

The paralegal profession takes dedication, pointed attention to detail and excellent research and writing skills – as well as basic legal knowledge. Although some paralegals enter the field with no formal training, most paralegals hold at least an associate degree in paralegal studies. There are campus based and online paralegal programs across the U.S. making this career field relatively easy to access. Those looking to receive further training may also pursue a bachelor’s or master’s degree. Paralegal training covers a huge range of material, from typing to legal research and documentation. In some cases a paralegal may also gain specialized training in a specific legal field, such as corporate or real estate law. While paralegal training is not always mandatory, it can be a huge help in finding a good job in the ever-competitive job market. Some paralegals may also choose to earn their official paralegal certification in order to improve job prospects.

To learn more about the best online paralegal programs, and those offered on campus, request information from the criminal justice paralegal programs listed below.

    Paralegal Career Outlook

The paralegal profession pays a median salary of $46,120, according to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). The BLS also reports a very positive career outlook for paralegals in the coming decade. At 28 percent, the expected rate-of-growth for paralegal jobs is much higher than the national average: a record-breaking 337,000-plus paralegals are expected to be employed in the country by 2018, up from 263,800 in 2008.

    Paralegal Trends

CNN Money magazine has included paralegals multiple times in its annual survey of the best jobs in the US, including a 2009 list, in which corporate paralegal placed 36th out of 50 jobs.

What is a Technical Product Manager, Anyway?

What does it really mean to be a Technical Product Manager? And how is it different from just a Product Manager. In this post, I share the difference between these titles plus key Do s and Don t s to help you succeed as a Technical Product Manager.

You might have noticed many variations on the Product Manager job title. Some companies have Strategic Product Managers, while others have Product Manager titles linked to specific industry verticals, for example, eCommerce Product Managers and Energy Product Managers. Among software companies, you ll often see the titles Product Manager, Product Development Manager, and Technical Product Manager. But what s the difference, anyway?

In reality, the term Technical Product Manager describes a person, not a role. Specifically, it describes a Product Manager who has a technical background and works on a technology product. It does not describe a Product Manager who needs to actually perform technical tasks, such as software architecting and coding. The same goes for a Product Development Manager. They are not actually developing the product they are performing a Product Management role in close coordination with a Software Development Team.

In short, for a company to get the most value from the role, Product Managers must focus on product management, not development. But some Product Managers need to understand the company s technology at a deep level and interface with the Development Team in order to successfully lead the strategy for the product. Companies may choose to call these people Technical Product Managers in order to attract the right candidate.

In my view, technical skills are one of the Four Pillars of Product Leadership. A technology-savvy Product Manager has huge advantages, such as:

    • Improved communication (and trust) from your development team.
    • Ability to understand tech trends, see how they impact your roadmap, and how they drive innovation.
    • Improved communication with your customers, for example when speaking with CIOs and CTOs.
    • Ability to understand technical challenges and make educated trade-offs with your team.

However, all too often, Technical Product Managers focus those valuable skills on trying to create the technical solution for their product, rather than solving the business and user needs of their target customer.

From that perspective, let s look at key Do s and Don t s for Technical Product Managers.

    Technical Product Manager Do s:

    1. Do focus on the business side of the role.

Regardless of the industry or vertical, the whole idea behind Product Management is to drive the vision and execution of a product. It s our responsibility to bring to market products that users want, that solve a business need, and that generate profit for the company. I m always fascinated to see technologists launching their new company with a product that is a very clever technical implementation, but it doesn t solve any real customer need. Needless to say, these companies rarely do well in the market.

The focus of a Product Manager (technical or not) should be to understand what the users need and work with all the necessary departments to bring the product to life. In that sense, the Technical Product Manager is a business role with some focus on technology as opposed to a technologist role with no responsibility for the product s market success.

    2. Do use your technical skills to improve prioritization and planning.

If you have a clear understanding of how your product is built, then you are able to assess the risk of certain features or get a more accurate gut feeling about the duration of stories or tasks. Since you are able to communicate with the Development Team in much more detail, you can understand the implications of certain decisions and make trade-offs in terms of complexity, depth or even timelines.

By demonstrating technical leadership, you ll be able to quickly gain the trust of your development team and they will be more likely to stand behind you on tough decisions that require risky changes, prioritizing bugs, or even negotiating the dreaded technical debt.

    3. Do leverage your technical skills to close the communication gap between engineering and the rest of the world.

People with technical backgrounds usually forget that hardly anyone else understands (or cares) about the technical details. This is a perfect opportunity for the Technical Product Manager to use her skills to translate between Engineering and other departments, including Sales, Product Marketing, and the customer.

Also, Technical Product Managers are often hired to drive products that are targeted at a very technical audience, such as APIs, development tools, IT software, etc. In these cases, the product features, product positioning, and messaging has to resonate with a very technical audience. This is another perfect opportunity to leverage your technical skills to communicate with your audience, get feedback (in their language), and help close a deal by speaking with the customer s technical staff.

Technical Product Manager Don t s

    1. Don t design/solution the product yourself.

This is a key source of confusion within the Technical Product Manager role. Many Product Managers that come from engineering have a hard time leaving their comfort zone and realizing that their value is now in a different area. They focus on defining the technical solution for a particular feature instead of defining the expected user outcome or business value. They spend more time talking to their architects and looking over the developers shoulders, than talking to customers and Sales.

This causes problems on two fronts:

    1. The Development Team feels frustrated because the solution details are just handed down to them by the PM. They don t get a chance to architect and design the solution, which is a big part of their job, not yours.
    2. Most of the PM s time is spent in the technical details, so there s no time left for planning and understanding the customer.

In a nutshell, this approach doesn t add value to developers, business owners, or the product itself. Even Technical Product Managers need to be paired up with strong Technical Leads or Development Managers that can lead these tasks. My motto is, the fact that you can, doesn t mean that you should.

When writing features and stories, focus on the problem you are looking to solve and on the persona you are targeting. The definition should include a flow diagram of what the solution should be (from a user perspective), including acceptance criteria. It should not be a detailed explanation of the placement of every pixel, updates to the object model, or the required changes to the database tables.

    2. Don t take on non-Product Management deliverables.

Many companies (especially those with a less mature Product process) think of the Technical Product Manager as an extension of the Development Team. I ve seen many job descriptions that list the regular responsibilities (roadmap, vision, feature definition, etc.), plus development responsibilities such as writing actual code, performing QA testing, writing documentation, etc. To me, this just shows a big misunderstanding of the role s value, and those situations should be avoided at all cost.

    3. Don t get caught up in Agile, or whatever methodology you re using.

I m always amazed by the amount of discussion I see online about Agile and Product Management. Though I do understand why many Technical PMs come from development, so staying extremely involved in the day-to-day Agile flow feels very comfortable to them.

However, the reality is that Agile is a very small part of the Product Manager s role. Focusing too much on Agile can actually be a detriment when it s taking time away from core PM responsibilities, such as interacting with customers and Sales and defining the roadmap.

To alleviate the workload, I m a big proponent of having different people perform the Product Manager and Product Owner roles. This approach is controversial, and it might only be possible in companies with a more mature Product process. Regardless, I think there s a lot of value in this separation to ensure that no aspect of the product development lifecycle or product management falls through the cracks, due to an overworked PM.

To get a better view of all the responsibilities of a Product Manager, I suggest looking into PM frameworks such as those from Pragmatic Marketing and SiriusDecisions .

    In Summary

Different companies have different Product Management titles and responsibilities based on their type of product. But regardless, the core job of a Product Manager is to provide the product s vision, create the roadmap, and drive its execution.

Adding the word Technical to the title is useful in job postings to highlight the need for technical background. But once in the job, the keys to success are the same as for every Product Manager keeping customer focus, driving a vision, and ensuring the product meets the market needs .

    Online Class: Chemistry 101

    Course Description

At a minimum, a basic understanding of chemistry is needed for it offers a foundation for comprehending the inner workings of biology (how cells function and the behavior of organisms), as well as, the ecological relationships that exist between organisms and their environment.

In short, chemistry offers us a way of understanding the world in which we live.

Chemistry provides us with insights into how our bodies function; the ingredients that are contained within the foods we eat; the reason cars, planes and trains are able to run as efficiently as they do; the manner in which computers are built and operate; and the materials used to construct our homes and buildings within our communities.

Basically, chemistry is a part of almost everything we do for everything is comprised of chemical compounds. The claim that chemistry is everywhere is, thus, entirely accurate.

Chemistry encompasses a multitude of specialized sub-disciplines which have proven highly useful to chemistry as they have provided for the following: the production and testing of stronger materials, creation of pharmaceuticals to treat disease, and the study of life processes.

Lesson 1. Atoms, Molecules, and Ions

The ordination of who was the true “father” of modern chemistry is a disputed point.

  • Lesson 2. Chemical Foundations

In chemistry the accepted measurement system for mass (m) or volume (v) is the metric system, also known as the System International (SI) system.

  • Lesson 3. Stoichiometry

Stoichiometry is the field of chemistry used to determine the quantities both for the required reactants of a chemical reaction and the predicted product of said reactions.

  • Lesson 4. Types of Chemical Reactions and Solution Stoichiometry

Most chemical reactions require a catalyst, a certain condition external to the reactants themselves that facilitates or causes the molecules to react with one another.

  • Lesson 5. Gases

Matter in gaseous form does not have an absolute density. In order to determine the density of any volume of gas, we must first determine the pressure under which the gas is being held.

  • Lesson 6. Thermochemistry

There are two types of energy, potential (the amount of energy possible given a certain circumstance) and kinetic (the amount of energy being expended).

  • Lesson 7. Atomic Structure and Periodicity

Electromagnetic radiation refers to the wavelengths on which energy travels through the Universe.

  • Lesson 8. Bonding. General Concepts

Hydrogen bonds are the bonds established between hydrogen and elements with a high level of electronegativity.

  • Lesson 9. Valence Bond Theory

Atoms form a bond when both of these two conditions occur 1) There is an “orbital overlap” between two atoms and 2) only two electrons, both of opposite spin, are present in the overlap.

  • Lesson 10. Properties and Solutions

Solutions are a combination of solutes and solvents, which are not necessarily composed of the same forms of matter.

  • Lesson 11. Chemical Kinetics

Chemical kinetics is concerned with the rates of chemical reactions.

  • Lesson 12. Chemical Equilibrium

The first thing to understand about equilibrium in chemistry is that it is a dynamic state.

  • Lesson 13. Spontaneity, Entropy, and Free Energy

Spontaneous processes occur without outside intervention. Some of these occur very quickly, such as combustion, whereas others like the formation of diamonds occur very slowly over millions if not billions of years.

  • Lesson 14. The Nucleus, A Chemist’s View

The nucleus of an atom is not always stable.

  • Lesson 15. Transition Metals and Coordination Chemistry

Many transition metals commonly form more than one form of oxidized compound depending on the conditions of formation.

  • Lesson 16. Organic Chemistry

Organic chemistry is the study of carbon based chemistry in the realm of living things.

Understanding National Certification and State Licensure

    What is national certification?

National counselor certification from NBCC demonstrates to the public and employers that the counselor has met the national standards set by the counseling profession. It is not a license to practice. In some states, holding a national certification can assist the counselor in obtaining a state license. National certification travels with the counselor no matter the state or country of residence. The flagship national certification offered by NBCC is the NCC (National Certified Counselor), and it is the largest national counselor certification in the world.

    What is a state license?

A state license in counseling is literally permission from a particular state to practice counseling or to call oneself a licensed counselor. Some states have a single license and some have a two-tiered system. The names of state licenses vary from state to state. Some examples are LPC, LCPC, LPCC, LMHC, LPCMH, LCMHC, LPC-MH.

National Certified Counselor (NCC ) Issued by NBCC. NBCC also offers three specialty certifications for NCCs in addictions, clinical mental health and school counseling.

Differs from state to state. Most common titles are: Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC ), Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC ), Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor (LCPC ), Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor (LPCC ). Issued by each state regulatory board.

To promote and represent the counseling profession through a national certification program where the standards are set by members of the counseling profession. Compliance with continuing education requirements and the NBCC Code of Ethics assists NCCs to stay current with best practices.

To protect the public by defining practitioners who can legally use the title of a licensed counselor and/or who can provide counseling services in a particular state. These standards are set by state legislatures.

The National Counselor Examination for Licensure and Certification (NCE )

NCE and/or NCMHCE. State counselor licensure boards contract with NBCC to use one or both of these examinations.

    • Master’s degree in counseling or with a major study in counseling from a regionally accredited institution
    • 3,000 hours of counseling experience and 100 hours of supervision both over a two year post-master’s time period
    • Post-master’s experience and supervision requirements are waived for graduate students who have completed CACREP accredited tracks.
    • Passing score on NCE

Varies from state to state. All require some combination of

    • Master’s degree
    • Counseling experience and supervision
    • Passing score on NCE and/or NCMHCE. Some require mental health laws exam of that state.
