He’s the Apple of his eye! Australian coding whizz, 10, meets with top tech CEO Tim Cook after developing his own apps – and the schoolboy made his first website when he was SIX

  • Yuma Soerianto from Melbourne won a scholarship to attend Apple conference
  • The 10-year-old showcased his app developing skills to Apple CEO Tim Cook
  • Apple’s Worldwide Developer Conference was held in San Jose, California
  • The impressive tech prodigy began coding for websites at the age of six

An Australian schoolboy who has been coding websites since the tender age of six was lucky enough to be invited to attend Apple’s Worldwide Developer Conference in California and managed to impress Apple CEO Tim Cook in the process.

Yuma Soerianto, 10, was one of a select few to receive a scholarship to the event held in Silicon Valley’s San Jose and was the youngest app developer in attendance.

The tech-savvy sensation from Melbourne showcased his talents to none other than Apple chief Tim Cook, who appeared impressed with Soerianto’s ability, The Sydney Morning Herald reports.

Scroll down for video

After building websites since he was just six, the schoolboy turned his attentions last year to building apps via Swift Playgrounds, the Apple app designed for children to develop their coding skills.

Remarkably, the 10-year-old is self taught and once completing Swift Playground’s tutorial with ease, he enrolled in a free online coding course offered by Stanford University.

He has since developed five apps on the App store including a game that entails a duck operating a machine that stacks blocks on top of one another named Lets Stack!, which is his most complex so far.

‘I liked building websites, but everyone has phones, so I wanted to learn how to build apps and I could build more fun stuff on an iPhone, like games!’ he told Fairfax Media.

After balancing his school work with app building in a hectic schedule, Soerianto decided to apply for a scholarship for the yearly conference.

After preparing an application for the prestigious event over two weeks, he was delighted to find out he had been awarded a spot at the Silicon Valley annual bash.

One of the highlights for all scholarship winners was an introduction with Apple boss Tim Cook, and after indulging in a brief chat with the CEO regarding the 10-year-old’s exploits, both parties seemed impressed.

When asked about his aspirations and what he’d like to be in the future, his response was a reminder of just how young the talented Australian is.

‘Batman,’ he responded. ‘That’s a joke, by the way. I really want to teach people how easy it is to code.’

And Soerianto has already begun offering tutorials to eager students after starting his own YouTube channel aptly named Anyone Can Code that has over 800 subscribers and are not necessarily other children.

‘The funny thing is, I made the YouTube channel for other kids, but most of the people who comment on my videos seem to be adults,’ he revealed.

Google Analytics for Xamarin

Analytics has long been associated with Google in the web realm, however it isn t as common in mobile development. While most people might choose Application Insights, RayGun or HockeyApp / Mobile Center, adding Google Analytics can be a good option, if your company is heavily invested in Google Analytics with other assets.

Google Analytics is also different than their Firebase Analytics service. Google released Firebase Analytics, specifically for mobile. This service has less functionality, though is rapidly growing, rather than Google Analytics, but it is designed more for mobile applications. Either Google Analytics or Firebase Analytics is suitable. This post however, will focus solely on Google Analytics.

Create Google Analytics Property

First, we need to go to Google Analytics. and sign up, if you haven t already. From there, you create a new account, then a property.

When you are creating a property, it is best to select Mobile App, then Google Analytics Services SDK.

You will now be given a tracking ID. Copy this down you will need it shortly.

Xamarin Forms Project

There are numerous components you can choose to have Google Analytics in your Xamarin Forms project. You have most likely come across the components Google Play Services Analytics and Google Analytics for iOS. These are the Google SDK s wrapped for use by Xamarin. However, they are tedious to setup and use, especially cross platform, hence I recommend using GoogleAnalytics Plugin for Xamarin .

Download GoogleAnalytics Plugin for Xamarin (ksemenenko.GoogleAnalytics) into all your Xamarin projects, where you will use it.

To intialize the tracker, run this code, in the native platform code, before LoadApplication is called.

Tracking Pages

Tracking pages is very simple. Just place the following code, in the OnAppearing on each page, or anything that signifies a page has just loaded.

If you start the app, then look at your RealTime, dashboard, you will see the page view.

More Tracking

You can track far more than just page views with this plugin.

  1. TrackEvent
  2. TrackException
  3. TrackSocialInteraction
  4. TrackUserTiming
  5. TrackTransaction
  6. TrackTransactionItem

These scenario s will most likely cover all of your cases, including purchases, specific user times, custom events and exception logging.

Learn More

Have a look at the Project Page. for more details. This plugin does not reference the SDK and keeps your project much lighter. If you want to have the latest the SDK can offer and perform far more advanced functions, you may need to look at the SDK bindings, provided by Xamarin, previously mentioned above.

How App Permissions Work Why You Should Care [Android]

Business card scanner app androidAndroid forces apps to declare the permissions they require when they install them. You can protect your privacy, security, and cell phone bill by paying attention to Android app permissions when installing those apps although many users don t.

Malicious apps can t send premium-rate SMS messages or snoop on your personal information without asking permission unless there s a security vulnerability, of course. Often, people that install malicious apps could have noticed the problem by staying vigilant over Android app permissions.

Permissions Explained

Every app declares its permissions when you install it. It doesn t request permissions you can t actually control these permissions. The app tells you what it requires, and you can take it or leave it. Android apps must declare permissions for nearly everything, from Internet access and writing to the SD card to monitoring your location and sending SMS messages.

You ll see a list of these permissions when installing apps from Google Play. You can tap each type of permissions to get more detailed information. A similar screen appears when you sideload apps How to Download Install Non-Market Google Android Mobile Apps How to Download Install Non-Market Google Android Mobile Apps Read More or install them from a third-party app store.

Android users had some warning that Path could do this by virtue of its permissions, while iOS users had no idea.

Apple s iOS lets apps read contacts without requesting any sort of permission and investigations found that a large amount of iOS apps upload users address books. Users may have assumed Apple s app store review process would protect them, but this incident shows the advantage of using Android app permissions instead of relying on a review process.

The Problem With Permissions

Permissions are great in theory. The problem is that most Android users had no idea Path was doing this either. For many users, permissions have unfortunately become like a EULA 10 Ridiculous EULA Clauses That You May Have Already Agreed To 10 Ridiculous EULA Clauses That You May Have Already Agreed To Let s be honest, no one reads EULA’s (End User Licensing Agreement) – we all just scroll down to the bottom and click “I Accept”. This isn t helped by the way permissions are presented, placing everything from accessing the Internet to sending premium-rate SMS messages in the same list.

Automatic Updates vs. Manual Updates

Android can automatically update your apps, saving you time. Every now and then, however, you ll see that an app can t automatically update.

Business card scanner app android

Whenever you see an app that requires manual updates, it s because the app requires additional permissions. Usually, the app s developers added a new feature that requires a new permission.

Theoretically, this is supposed to protect you from an app s developers going rogue and updating a harmless app with malicious features. However, most users probably tap through the message without examining the new permission. You ll see a New indicator next to each new permission.

Android also allows you to view the permissions of your installed apps. To do so, tap the Menu button, tap Settings, tap Applications, and tap Manage Applications. Tap an installed app in the list and scroll down to the view the permissions it requires.

9 Tools for Building Your Own Mobile App

Free Webinar | August 16th

Find out how to optimize your website to give your customers experiences that will have the biggest ROI for your business. Register Now

As a small-business owner, if you decide there s good reason to develop your own mobile app. there are several ways to do it.

But before you dive into the deep end of the app development pool, familiarize yourself with a number of the more advanced mobile development options. Here s some background on each platform:

Android: You can create apps using Java for Android by downloading its free software development kit. The kit comes with samples, source code, developer tools and emulators for testing your app. Android even provides how-to videos, technical articles and instructions on how to develop apps, just in case you re feeling overwhelmed. A one-time $25 developer registration fee is needed to distribute apps in the Android marketplace, now known as Google Play .

Apple iOS: If you want to create an iPhone app using the iOS platform, you ll need to shell out about $99, which isn t much considering the elegance and functionality of the program. The iOS Developer Center has a wide selection of tools, tips, debugging tests and guides for creating apps for just about any purpose.

BlackBerry: The BlackBerry platform supports several ways to develop applications, mobile websites, themes and even widgets. To distribute apps on BlackBerry s App World. you have to pay a fee for every 10 apps you submit for approval. BlackBerry often offers promotions to waive this fee.

Windows: The Windows platform may not be the world s largest, but its user interface is easy to use. The Windows Phone development program provides valuable documentation on the best practices for marketing your app. Plus, you don t have to worry about your app or game idea getting rejected after you ve spent time creating it. Windows provides clear documentation on what will fly and what won t with its approval process.

Now that you have a better sense of the platform options, you ll want to start considering which tools will help you create your mobile app. But what if you re not a programming junkie? What if you don t necessarily like to speak in code? There is good news: There are plenty of app development tools for ordinary humans, too.

Here s a look at nine that you might find useful:

1. AppMakr
This is a browser-based platform designed to make creating your own iPhone app quick and easy. You can use existing content and social networking feeds to produce a variety of different approaches for your app. It includes features such as push notifications, location- aware GeoRSS, custom CSS and JavaScript capabilities.

The tool is free to use, but a $79 monthly fee per app subscription gets you access to more advanced features. AppMakr works on the iOS, Android and Windows operating systems.

2. GENWI
This tablet and smartphone publishing platform allows you to create and manage your presence on all popular mobile devices, including iPad, iPhone, Android and HTML5 apps. It delivers rich graphics, photos, video, audio and other forms of interactivity.

GENWI also enables you to revise your apps as often as you like. What s more, apps can include various revenue-generating capabilities for businesses, like ads, coupons and in-app subscriptions. After a three-month trial, pricing varies by features included.

3. Mippin
One of the greatest strengths of the London-based Mippin platform is its ease of use. It allows you to create apps for Android, iOS and Windows, and provides flexibility in designing the app. You can even have Mippin distribute your app for you to the iTunes, Android, Windows and Amazon stores. Native apps can cost as much as $999 per year.

Excel for iPad review: The best spreadsheet app for the iPad

There are any number of spreadsheet apps available for the iPad, but recently the market changed dramatically when Microsoft released the full Office suite for iPad. including a version of Excel. While you can argue that Excel is many years late to the iPad party (and I wouldn’t disagree), the iPad version of Excel is a solid entrant, and instantly changes the landscape for competitive apps.

I’ve spent quite a bit of time with Excel for iPad, and it’s telling that my main complaints have little to do with the actual program: Microsoft has done an excellent job at transferring the power and capabilities of Excel for OS X into Excel for iPad. The program loads quickly, contains more of Excel’s core functionality than I would have expected, and the transition from keyboard/mouse to full touch interface has been handled very nicely.

The interface

For a company with a history of not doing well with touch (i.e. Office apps on Surface in Windows 8), the interface in Excel for iPad is surprisingly well thought out. The window features six small buttons across the top of the screen, along with five words that are actually tabs on the yes-there’s-a-ribbon.

Excel for iPad’s interface takes up relatively minimal screen room, and is easy to work with even with large bumbling fingers.

But unlike desktop Excel, where I often find the ribbon too big and too cluttered, the ribbon on Excel for iPad is small and tidy. Each tab (Home, Insert, Formulas, Review, and View) contains only one row of text and icons, and the icons are reasonably sized. The default view opens with the Home tab active, which contains often-used formatting options, such as font face, color, and style; font fill and borders; text alignment; and cell formatting and style drop-downs.

The other ribbons are relatively self-explanatory, except perhaps Review, which is used to scan through comments on worksheet cells. Ironically, Excel for iPad can’t actually create cell notes, so the Review ribbon is only used to browse through the existing comments. (You can, however, delete comments; you just can’t create them.)

While working on a worksheet, touch actions work as you’d expect them to—two finger drags scroll, and pinch gestures zoom and unzoom. A single tap will select a cell, while a double-tap will open the cell for entry (and display the keyboard). When entering data in cells, you can also use a numeric keyboard, which greatly speeds entering formulas and numbers. External keyboards are also supported, and worked well in my testing—there’s even a cheat sheet in the app’s help (somewhat hidden in the menu used for saving and duplicating workbooks) that shows you how to navigate and work with the app using an external keyboard.

The numeric keyboard, which combines mathematical symbols and numbers on one panel, greatly speeds entry of formulas.

Cell references can be added to formulas by tapping (and tap-dragging) on other cells as you’re working on the formula, further simplifying formula entry.

Once a cell is selected, you can tap-and-drag on one of its corners to expand the selection to a range; you can then move that range (or a cell) with a tap-and-hold operation. You can also bring up a contextual menu of sorts, by tapping on a cell that’s already selected (i.e. highlighted on the worksheet). This brings up a bar from which you can cut, copy, clear, fill, or wrap the cell. If you choose Fill, the cell gains small arrows on its right and bottom sides, and you can then drag those arrows to fill adjacent cells, as you can do in the desktop version of Excel.

The features

Microsoft did an incredible job at getting a lot of Excel’s power into the iPad version of the app. There are over 400 formulas present—if that’s not all of the formulas from the desktop version, it’s the vast majority of them. Most of the chart types have also migrated, and creating a chart is as easy as selecting the data to chart, tapping the Insert ribbon, choosing a chart type, and then tap-dragging out a region for the chart.

You can also choose from a large assortment of shapes, add text boxes, and even insert images. However, the image browser is restricted to photos stored on the iOS device; you can’t access any media files on your OneDrive, for example. The help system is relatively complete, including a comparison table that shows what you can do in each version of Excel (iOS, OS X, Windows), along with a touch guide that explains how to interact with your data.

The built-in help is actually helpful, and includes things such as this guide to Excel’s gestures.

From functions to fonts to cell borders to merging cells to table styling to hiding and shuffling worksheets in a workbook, Excel for iPad has most of the features of the desktop version. Some are limited, of course—there aren’t nearly as many cell border styles—but there’s enough here to meet the needs of even heavy-duty spreadsheet users. I was impressed with the responsiveness of the app, even when working on somewhat larger worksheets—scrolling was smooth, and I didn’t notice any slowdowns or other issues.

Things to be aware of

There are some features missing from Excel for iPad. Many people have noted the inability to print —if you want to print your worksheets, you’ll need to find a Windows or OS X computer to do so. (You may be able to open a spreadsheet in Numbers and print it that way, too.) This may or may not be a big issue, depending on your workflow.

As noted earlier, you can’t create comments; you also can’t name cells or ranges (but you can work with existing names), nor create conditional formatting rules. Existing array formulas work, but you can’t enter or create new ones. You can see existing sparklines (a full graph in one cell, basically), but you cannot create new ones. Finally, references in formulas to cells on external worksheets won’t update.

One last limitation is that Excel for iPad can only be used on one workbook at a time. If you have two worksheets you want to work on, and they’re in different workbooks, you’ll have to close one to work on the other. Usually, this isn’t a problem, but it can get annoying if you’re working on related workbooks and need to pop back and forth a lot. (Have a second iPad? It’d come in handy right about now.)

By default, Excel for iPad constantly saves your work—so if you’re working on a mission-critical workbook, you’ll want to duplicate it first, just in case you do something bad. (You can also disable auto-save in the same menu you use to duplicate workbooks.)

Files can be saved to the iPad (and transferred in/out via iTunes’ Apps section), or saved to your OneDrive cloud disk. A nicely-laid-out file organizer lets you browse files on both the iPad and on OneDrive, although there’s no file preview functionality—if you want to know what’s in a certain file, you’ll have to open it.

Excel doesn’t support Google Drive or Dropbox, which isn’t surprising—you won’t find support for OneDrive (or Dropbox) in Google Sheets or Numbers. The lack of support for other cloud services is troubling, but not crippling—Excel, for instance, shows as a supported app in the Open In menu in Dropbox.

The elephant in the room

The elephant, of course, is the Office 365 subscription model that Microsoft applied to Excel for iPad. While the app itself is free to use (as a spreadsheet viewer), to actually edit workbooks, you need an Office 365 subscription, which will set you back $100 per year. For that, you get 20GB of OneDrive cloud storage, and the ability to use all of Office on up to five computers (OS X or Windows) and five tablets.

That $100 is a lot of money—or it’s not a lot of money, depending on your needs and perspective. If you’re not a heavy spreadsheet user, and you’re perfectly happy using Office 2008 on your Mac, then you might view $100 per year as outrageously expensive. But if you live and breathe spreadsheets, own two Macs, a Windows machine, two iPads, and travel a lot, you may see that same $100 a year as a bargain—because the cost of buying and installing Office (it also includes Word and PowerPoint) on the Macs and Windows machines would quickly cover at least five years’ of the subscription price.

Each user will have to decide if they feel the price is worth it, based on their individual use patterns.

Bottom line

Excel for iPad is an excellent iOS spreadsheet app. The touch UI is well thought out, and support for the full set of functions from the desktop apps means you can work on even complicated workbooks while away from your computer. Saving files on OneDrive means they’re in sync across all your devices, and available wherever you go.

The main downside for casual users is the $100 per year price, which is expensive for those who don’t often need the full power of Excel on their iOS devices. For these users, there are much less expensive options (though none as fully-featured as Excel for iPad). For serious users, the $100 per year cost probably isn’t an issue, because of the number of machines and devices it covers, and the fact that it insures they’ll always get the latest and greatest version of the desktop and iOS apps.

Irrespective of price, though, Excel for iPad is the best spreadsheet app I’ve yet seen on the iPad.

What’s The Average Web App Development Cost

What’s The Average Web App Development Cost

Recently, we’ve covered prices of developing mobile apps. Now, it’s time to address the question that makes developers cringe even more – “what’s the average web app development cost?”

Prior to writing this piece, I’d looked through tons of articles on the topic and found most of them are like crappy ketchup bottles. I’d fiddled around with them forever, trying to squeeze meaning from each side, but hardly anything came out.

More disturbingly, the majority didn’t even include numbers! With titles like “how much money should you spend, average costs of and the price of building a web app the blogs contained nothing but endless text; some vague developer’s ramblings.

Today, we’ll put a stop to the uncertainty, or at least try to, by providing the average costs of web apps here at Perfectial; and by explaining in detail which factors determine them.

So, what affects the web app development cost?

#1 Scope

The first element dictating web app development cost is the functionality level. Is it a simple website you’re planning to launch, which only serves as a responsive online brochure, or a unique ERP system? Does it include lots of third party integrations or is it standalone?

Whichever you opt for, don’t commit too much to your initial vision. Reality, with its frequent unaffected cruelty, might shatter it to pieces.

Even if you have all aspects of the future system already thought out (which is admirable) we recommend narrowing your idea down to a set of core functions at first. It’s called a Minimum Viable Product (MVP) approach, and it’s designed specifically to save you money.

Focused on MVP, developers won’t need to code as much, which will trickle down to QAs, PMs, etc. And, you’ll get to try out your idea with real consumers first, receive vital feedback, before proceeding further with what might be a costly project execution.

#2 Design UX

Not only is making unique interfaces which reflect your brand’s values hard, but so is writing a markup for them, using HTML and CSS. Both activities require time, and time, as I’ve stressed earlier, is paid in software development.

Sure, you can choose pre-built design templates, which are two a penny, but mediocrity is rarely one’s wish when it comes to software market. Thousands of apps are launched each month, and not standing out on from them means, basically, foredooming your business from the offset.

#3 Niche

This one has to do with the uniqueness of an app and is related tightly to the scope, as both factors translate into the time needed for engineering.

Building something of which there are tons, like an online shop or a web journal requires no special knowledge and therefore doesn’t cost a lot. Unique and complicated software systems, however, are different. They can’t be delivered without the involvement of top development talent and advanced project management expertise – the intangible resources which, in the world of software, are of most value.

That doesn’t mean you must only hire glorified web agencies, with sky-high hourly rates, to work on niche projects. Most solid companies, if they happen to lack the necessary expertise, will hurriedly hire a specialist (or a couple) to bring your app to life; they need to keep a client. The charge for that, however, tied with the staff training which will probably take place, too, will be included in your receipt and significatnly your web app development cost.

#4 Location

Much like real estate, engineering talent costs less overseas. Agencies from the US, Australia or Canada pay developers by $80-150/hour rates, the highest rates in the world, and charge their clients accordingly.

In the UK, you can find solid contractors for $50-100 per hour and in Eastern Europe, rather advantageously, for $20-50.

And then, there are freelancers willing to work for $5-10/hour and unuseful completely, for anything beyond most inelaborate apps.

What’s the cost then?

All the estimates we provide are based on the projects we’ve worked with earlier. Naturally, they are approximate numbers, which won’t tell you precisely the budget you can squeeze your project in. However, they’ll provide you with a frame of reference

So, here are the prices of Web Development at Perfectial

Simple apps

Such apps could be websites with online brochure features only; landing pages with a few interactive elements; calculator pages; widgets or simple components for an existing website.

The wep app development cost in such cases ranges from $5K to $10K. The number of experts needed for their development is 2 or 3 – 1 (or 2) Web Engineer and a UX/UI designer working simultaneously for 2-3 months.

Mid-complexity apps

These are usually advanced e-commerce retailers, marketplace-based web apps or huge modules/additional parts for existing websites.

$15-30K is what they cost, roughly, 3 to 6 months is the time they’re being developed for, and 5- 6 experts is usually who develops them.

Teams, who launch mid-complexity apps at Perfectial consist of a UI/UX Engineer, 3-4 Software Engineers and a QA Engineer.

Enterprise apps

Complete web apps, that automate core business processes within large companies, or advanced FinTech software projects.

Enterprise apps are built by 11-15 experts (1-2 UI/UX Engineers, 8-10 Software Engineers, 2-3 QA Engineers) over the course of 6-24 months. They might cost $100,000, or $1,000,000, or more, especially if post-release updates and maintenance are also required.

We hope sincerely that the estimates above have helped you; that you now understand, or at least have an idea about web app development cost.

The thing is I wanted to keep it simple. Just input the number and see the total, how much, for how long, you know. just the FINAL number. Which is what car dealers will never give upfront, because they always play that 101 psychology thing on you.

So I built this app using the common formula that you can see around in many websites. The idea is pretty simple, just input the data and get the total final price and the monthly installments. As an extra you can also see how the amortization for the loan plays along time.

Check it out, assume we want to calculate the final price for a car that cost 25k, we will put a 10% down payment, 2.5k, with an APR of 3.0%, and with a loan term of 3 years. Just enter the data and hit Calculate

Then we just get the summary result with the final cost, see that in total we are paying $26,055.78 for the car. And I don’t know you, but that’s what I really care. The monthly installments are of $654.33, you can also see that in total you will pay $1,055.78 of interest on the car.

On the details tab we get the amortization for the monthly payments. So you can see how much goes to interest and how much to the principal.

The formula is this one:

The only catch is that the rate is our APR divided by 1200, so here is the c# code to get the monthly installments based on the formula above.

Now, we have to pay interest every month, and is based on what we still owe, so applying that to the monthly installments we can get the amortization for every month. The C# code is as follows:

Where CreateRow is a method that add the data do the grid on the screen. Hope you like it!

Ms-overflow-style property – Windows app development #auto #detailing #supplies

#auto style
#

Syntax

-ms-overflow-style: auto | none | scrollbar | -ms-autohiding-scrollbar

Property values

One or more of the following scrolling method values, in the order of preference.

auto

Initial value. Indicates the element inherits its -ms-overflow-style from its parent element.

In Windows Store apps using JavaScript, on the root element, auto behaves like -ms-autohiding-scrollbar .

none

Indicates the element does not display scrollbars or panning indicators, even when its content overflows.

Unlike overflow . hidden. elements with -ms-overflow-style. none can still be scrolled via touch panning, keyboard, or mouse wheel.

scrollbar

Indicates the element displays a classic scrollbar-type control when its content overflows.

Unlike -ms-autohiding-scrollbar. scrollbars on elements with the -ms-overflow-style property set to scrollbar always appear on the screen and do not fade out when the element is inactive.

Scrollbars do not overlay content, and therefore take up extra layout space along the edges of the element where they appear.

-ms-autohiding-scrollbar

Indicates the element displays auto-hiding scrollbars during mouse interactions and panning indicators during touch and keyboard interactions.

Auto-hiding scrollbars overlay content, and therefore do not require extra layout space.
