Suzuki Ends U.S. Car Sales: Why It Had to Do It (And Other Brands That Could Disappear)

We re in the midst of an automotive reckoning. Suzuki s announcement this week that it will no longer be selling cars in the U.S. makes it the 10th major brand to disappear since the start of the century. Of those, one was a Ford brand, one was a division of Chrysler, and the remaining eight all were either subsidiaries of or close partners with General Motors. (Many we recapped in our Decade in Review .) Like Isuzu, another U.S. evacuee and estranged GM ally, Suzuki will continue selling cars outside the U.S. Why did Suzuki, Japan s fourth-largest car company, leave? And why does this keep happening?

A multi-dimensional look at Suzuki s U.S. sales

The Short Answer

The tl;dr explanation—that s too long; didn t read in internet-ese—is that even though Suzuki has two models that really are quite good, Suzuki isn t selling enough cars and can t compete with the big guys. The Kizashi and the SX4 may be virtuous, but the buyers aren t coming. Suzuki s U.S. sales peaked in 2007, with about 102,000 units sold, and fell to just a quarter of that last year. It becomes a death spiral: Dealerships close, fewer cars are sold, the company has less money, debt piles up, and public image evaporates. Suzuki has no product in the pipeline for the U.S. and fewer corporate partners to lean on for rebadges.

In other countries, the situation isn t so grim. Suzuki sells micro-size kei cars by the boatload in Japan, its Wagon R often the top-selling small car in the country. India, too, is a stronghold for Suzuki, where its Maruti Suzuki brand unloads cheap, cheerful transportation to an exploding middle class.

Loss of Product Partners

Suzuki s core competency is in small cars and small SUVs. Really small. So to offer a full product lineup in the U.S. Suzuki has had to snuggle up to several corporate partners. The late Forenza and Reno were developed by GM Daewoo in Korea, back when Suzuki owned 15 percent of GM Daewoo and General Motors owned 20 percent of Suzuki. The Equator pickup was a Nissan Frontier with the Superman logo slapped on the front, while the XL7 crossover was built on the General Motors Theta platform used for the Chevy Equinox .

But Suzuki couldn t properly align with new friends to supply the product it needs—and even if it could, the result threatens profit margins. Ties are mostly severed with General Motors. A deal with Volkswagen fell through. Fiat, which sells a rebadged SX4 in Europe, has talked about closer ties with Suzuki but no deals have been announced. Developing products and platforms on your own is expensive and difficult; Suzuki can swing that kind of investment for the small cars it sells so well in other countries, but without much of a market for big ones like the Kizashi outside the U.S. it makes little sense.

The market for cheap, imported econo-cars—often even designed overseas—from niche companies has all-but disappeared, with Suzuki one of the last survivors among a field that included Geo, Isuzu, Yugo, Daewoo, Eagle, and Daihatsu. Mitsubishi continues to limp along. All were felled by competition from the big boys.

Decisions by Toyota and Honda to enter the small-SUV market in the mid-1990s was a headshot to Suzuki s business, long dependent on the Samurai, the Sidekick, and the Vitara. On the car side, the company was able to hold on a little longer. It wasn t until the mid-2000s when Kia and Hyundai introduced some truly competitive models here. When they did, their cheap cars with long warranties slaughtered what remained of the cheap-import segment.

The new CAFE and greenhouse gas rules disproportionately penalize low-volume manufacturers of physically small vehicles. Porsche can weather the storm (and afford penalties), but Suzuki was at risk. Even with a special exemption called TLAAS, or Temporary Lead-Time Allowance Alternative Standard, Suzuki would have needed to post almost impossible reductions to its cars CO2 emissions—not because they re especially dirty, but because the EPA requires certain degrees of improvement. Suzuki and Porsche joined with Jaguar-Land Rover in voicing concerns to the EPA, but a final rule issued in October showed them only minimal clemency.

Dealer Network

Suzuki s retail system was a proper mess. There weren t enough sales to support more dealers opening, but too few dealers to really grow sales. Low-profit-margin products and small sales didn t always attract high-quality dealer managers and sales staff, which in turn probably turned off many customers. For years, dealers and Suzuki corporate alike complained about an antiquated, inefficient system for ordering vehicles in which the dealers had little input; they often didn t have access to the cars they could actually sell. It cost Suzuki dearly.

Are We Going to Lose More Brands in the U.S.?

Very possibly. Mitsubishi is the obvious skater on thin ice, and when asked this week, its U.S. boss was firm in insisting the company will stay. (You didn t expect him to be wishy-washy, did you?) But Mitsubishi is in very serious trouble globally as well as in the States, because like Suzuki, it s experiencing how inhospitable the world car market is for smaller manufacturers.

There may come a time when Toyota pulls the plug on Scion. its own experiment with low-priced entry-level econoboxes repurposed from other markets. In Scion s favor, it s not hugely expensive to run, and Toyota has the cash to spare. Badging the new rear-drive sports car as the Scion FR-S instead of as a Toyota GT 86 in the U.S. is a something of a Hail Mary pass for the Scion brand.

It s almost unthinkable, but Volvo may have to exit the U.S. market at some point as well. Volvo sales here in 2011 were just half of their 2003 level, and the company recently pruned several models from its lineup, including the S40 sedan, the C70 convertible, and the C30 hatchback. Whether Volvo remains largely will depend on the willingness of its owner, Geely, to put up with sluggish sales—and the importance of being in the U.S. to keep appearances as a global luxury brand.

Like all of these companies, Suzuki had some very good cars on offer in American showrooms. The Kizashi and the SX4 may not have been class-leading, but they weren t at the back of the group either—and both were well priced. If you re looking to score a deal, now is a good time for either. Suzuki will continue to honor warranties and supply parts, a promise made stronger by the company s plan to continue car sales in Canada, and to remain in the U.S. selling motorcycles and ATVs.

I’ve been waiting awhile for this one. Taurus introduced the .45 OSS at the 2006 SHOT Show. One year later at the 2007 SHOT Show. it still wasn’t in production, but after a few more months of waiting, it is finally here. The US military showing interest in a .45 caliber service pistol has brought out many new modern .45 ACP full-sized pistols from several gun makers, and all are pretty good designs. The OSS falls into this category of full-sized service handguns, and is of the type that would be just right for a police holster gun or as a fighting pistol for defensive purposes. The OSS is a large pistol, but has a very comfortable grip, and the weight is relatively light for a service pistol, weighing in at slightly over 31 ounces empty. The barrel measures five and one-quarter inches long, and the overall length is eight and one-quarter inches. The magazine holds twelve .45 ACP cartridges, for a loaded capacity of thirteen, and the pistol ships with two magazines. The magazines are made of steel, and drop free when released, and the magazine release is right behind the trigger guard on the left side, just where it belongs. If desired, the magazine release is reversible for left-handed use. The trigger guard is large enough for a gloved finger, and is hooked on the front for added support from the weak hand.

One thing that sets the OSS apart from its competition is the mode of the action. Unlike most striker-fired modern auto pistols, the OSS has double-strike capability. The slide does not pre-cock the striker, and the trigger can keep cycling the striker, in the case of a dud primer. Personally, if the weapon does not fire when the trigger is pulled, I prefer to rack the slide and get the offending cartridge out of there, but some folks do like the double-strike capability. Also, the OSS has a first shot double action, and subsequent shots single action trigger system, and the safety allows the pistol be carried cocked-and-locked if desired. The safety blocks the trigger from movement, and can be activated whether the striker is cocked or not. This makes for a very versatile pistol. The pistol can also be safely carried with the safety off, if desired. The safety also locks the slide, which can be a good feature if sliding the pistol into a tight holster. Also, thankfully, the safety is of ambidextrous design, which is a real plus for left-handed shooters like me. The safety can also be pushed up to safely de-cock the striker. There is a red indicator at the back of the slide to let the operator know whether the pistol is cocked or not. Just above the extractor is a loaded chamber indicator.

The OSS uses a single spring captured recoil system with a full length guide rod. The pistol strips easily for maintenance. The grip is well-textured for a positive hold, and there are subtle finger grooves on the front strap of the grip. The magazine base pads offer support for the little finger of large hands, and the grip size and trigger reach make the pistol fit smaller hands very well. The slide has serrations fore and aft on both sides to help in cycling the action manually. Thankfully, there is no magazine safety, but the OSS does have the Taurus Security System key lock, that can be utilized or not, as the owner desires. The sights are highly visible, with the rear ramped, and are of the three-dot design, but do not have tritium inserts. Both front and rear sights are windage adjustable, and lock with a set screw.

At the front of the frame there is a section of Picatinny compatible rail for mounting a light or laser sight, and for testing I mounted a very compact Laserlyte laser to the rail. Also pictured here is a Laserlyte L-Rail that allows the use of both a laser sight and a light at the same time, for those who desire to do so. Both the laser sight and L-Rail seem to be very well made, and the laser was easy to see and held its setting throughout the testing of a large quantity of high performance .45 ACP ammunition, most of it Plus P rated. The laser activates by a push button switch, and uses four small batteries, which are supplied, along with four spares. The laser sight is attached to the Picatinny or Weaver style rail with two Allen head screws, and is adjusted with the supplied Allen wrench.

I fired the OSS for accuracy and reliability testing with a variety of high performance ammunition, and also with my standard semi-wadcutter handload. Every brand and type of factory ammunition that I tried functioned flawlessly in the OSS. Chronograph testing was done at a distance of twelve feet over the sensors of a Chrony Master Beta model chronograph. Air temperature was in the seventy-five degree range, at an elevation of approximately 400 feet above sea level. Velocities are listed in the chart below in feet-per-second (fps). Bullet weights are listed in grains. JHP is jacketed hollowpoint. EPR is a specialty high performance type bullet loaded by Extreme Shock. SWC is a handloaded lead semi-wadcutter bullet. DPX is the Barnes all-copper hollowpoint bullet loaded by Cor-Bon. PB is a specialty hollowpoint bullet with a nylon ball nose loaded by Cor-Bon, called PowRBall .

Suzuki cars leave the US. So should you buy one?

There’s nothing like a bargain price on a brand-new car.

And since Suzuki  has announced that it’ll stop selling cars in the U.S.. there are bargains galore on new Suzuki models.

It also depends on whether your local Suzuki dealer plans to stick around for a few years to service the cars, or whether it plans to close its Suzuki business and transfer warranty claims work to another dealer somewhere further away.

But, first, the purchase price on that new Suzuki–which likely just got lower.

As the case of Saab just this past January showed, dealers may offer 25 percent or more off the new-car sticker price  when a brand pulls out of the market.

The tactic worked, too: An Ohio Saab dealer sold 55 of its 122 new cars  in one week by slashing prices 25 to 45 percent.

We know of a Detroit buyer who was able to get $4,000 off the $20,399 price of a brand-new 2013 Suzuki SX4  with all-wheel drive and the value package that includes a navigation system. He closed that sale yesterday.

Unlike Saab, however, Japanese carmaker Suzuki isn’t defunct, however; only its U.S. unit declared bankruptcy.

That means that not only will parts continue to be available, but that warranties on existing Suzukis will continue to be honored, and parts availability shouldn’t be a problem.

When Saab declared bankruptcy last December after several failed sale attempts, its dealers were left without warranties on their brand-new cars–and had to sell them that way.

That Ohio Saab dealer created a $1,995 service contract for 60,000 miles to substitute for the defunct factory warranty.

Suzuki dealers won’t have to do that, and owners shouldn’t see any change in warranty coverage.

But it’s entirely possible that Suzuki buyers will have to travel further to get their cars serviced, if their local dealer shuts down its Suzuki service business before the warranty ends.

As for parts, because Suzuki is a global automaker and will continue to supply replacement components for its cars elsewhere in the world, service parts shouldn’t be a problem.

That ensures that owners (and former Suzuki dealers) can at least get the parts that independent service mechanics need to keep their cars on the road.

In June, the parts-making piece of Saab (which wasn’t part of the bankrupt carmaker) set up a new U.S. company that will continue to sell parts for Saabs .

Another factor to consider: Potential buyers should check carefully with their financial institutions if they don’t plan on getting a purchase loan through the dealership.

Some banks have more restrictive policies about writing loans for new cars from dead automakers.

Other defunct brands include not only Saab, but also Saturn. Pontiac, HUMMER, Oldsmobile. Plymouth, Isuzu. Daihatsu. and more.

In the end, buyers should consider not only whether a new Suzuki represents value for money, but whether it’s a car they really want to drive and live with for several years.

Except for the Kizashi sport sedan–larger than a compact, but smaller than a mid-size–Suzuki’s lineup of cars and crossovers  is now old and not particularly refined.

The SX4 hatchback  offered a model that was the lowest-priced all-wheel drive car sold in the U.S. but it and the sister sedan model are now in their seventh model year.

Similarly, the Grand Vitara is aging and uncompetitive on equipment.

And most Suzuki models have lower EPA gas-mileage ratings than competing cars from other makers.

So if you like the price you can get on a new Suzuki, make sure you like the car.

Then weigh the risks carefully. and quiz your dealership about its future plans.

Suzuki Cars

Suzuki was established in 1909 by Michio Suzuki as Suzuki Loom Works, producing looms and weaving machines for the Japanese silk industry. While Suzuki had a highly successful business, he knew that the company would have to diversify if it was to continue. He decided that he would enter the automobile market, and in 1937, began the development of his first prototype vehicles.

Suzuki After World War II

World War II put a halt to all major civilian car production as the Japanese government deemed them to be non-essential commodities. This stopped Suzuki’s plans until after the war and the company went back to producing looms full time. When the cotton market collapsed in 1951, Suzuki turned his thoughts back to motor vehicles, both motorcycles and lightweight cars. In 1954, the company changed its name to the Suzuki Motor Company, Ltd. in line with its change in industry focus.

For several years, Suzuki successfully produced motorcycles before launching its first car, the Suzuki Suzulight. This car was sold only in Japan and was produced from 1955 until 1969. In 1963, Suzuki opened a sales subsidiary in Los Angeles under the company name, U.S. Suzuki Motor Corporation. As this was a direct sales subsidiary of the parent company, any Suzuki vehicles sold in America were imported and not built in the U.S.

Suzuki in America

In 1985, the Suzuki of America Automotive Corporation was established. With the formation of this company, Suzuki launched the Samurai, the first vehicle officially marketed by Suzuki in the U.S. While this was a new car in the U.S. market, Suzuki was producing them since 1968. The Samurai, or the SJ413 as it was known in other markets, was classed as a mini SUV. It had seating for two and came in a convertible or hardtop version. This vehicle was extremely popular due to its excellent off-road performance and reliability. The Samurai was withdrawn from American and Canadian markets in 1995 and replaced by the Suzuki Sidekick.

In 1986, the American Suzuki Motor Corporation (ASMC) was created through the merger of Suzuki of America Automotive Corporation and the U.S. Suzuki Motor Corporation. Prior to the official launch of the Samurai, Suzuki had been selling a version of its Cultus model as the Chevrolet Sprint through an agreement with General Motors in 1985. It was a three-door hatchback and was the smallest model available from Chevrolet. The ASMC released the second generation of the Cultus as the Suzuki Swift in 1989.

Suzuki Models

The Swift was launched in 1990 as a three- or five-door hatchback and a four-door sedan version. The Cultus was replaced by the first generation of Suzuki Swifts in 2000. Both three- and five-door hatchback versions were available with automatic or manual transmission. The Swift was launched at the same time as the Suzuki Sidekick, which had a two-door convertible or hardtop off-road vehicle. In 1991, a four-door version was also released. The Sidekick underwent a facelift in 1996 and a Sport version was launched at this time. The Sidekick Sport was short lived and replaced by the Grand Vitara in 1999, which is currently in its third generation.

The Suzuki Esteem was launched by the ASMC in 1995 to replace the Swift four-door sedan. In 1996, a station wagon version of the Esteem was introduced to the market. These were short-lived vehicles as they were replaced in 2002 by the Aerio that had a four-door sedan and a five-door crossover SUV variation with all-wheel drive. In 2001, the Swift was dropped from the North American market. The launch of the SX4 ended production of the Aerio.

Suzuki Products and Technologies

The current models available from Suzuki include the Kizashi, SX4, Grand Vitara and Equator. The Kizashi is a midsize four-door sedan that has been available since 2010. In Japanese, Kizashi means warning or omen, so it is thought that this name was used as a means of suggesting that great things are coming from Suzuki. It is currently the company’s flagship sedan.

The Suzuki SX4 is available in three different versions: the sedan, sportback and all-wheel drive crossover. Originally developed as a compact car, the SX4 was first released as a five-door hatchback. The SX4 sedan has a more aerodynamic shape, compared to the sportback and crossover version. The other two versions are five-door hatchbacks. The sportback version went through cosmetic changes, as well as being lower on its suspension than the all-wheel drive version.

The Equator is a midsized pickup truck that is sold by Suzuki, but assembled by Nissan. It is available as a two-door or four-door crew cab version and has been on the market since 2009.

As if paying for a new car wasn t expensive enough, the cost to insure the vehicle can be an additional headache.

So how do consumers know if they re getting a good deal on their auto insurance? A new study from ranked the best and worst car insurance deals for the 20 most popular 2015 vehicles.

This study highlights why it s so important to research insurance costs before buying a car, said s senior analyst Laura Adams in a statement. They re an important part of the total cost of ownership and don t always move in tandem with the purchase price.

To determine the value of the insurance deal, the study looked at the annual cost to insure each vehicle and divided that amount by the manufacturer s suggested retail price (MSRP).

Overall, the study found larger vehicles like pickup trucks and SUVs offered better insurance values than smaller sedans. For example, while the Ford Explorer was the most expensive vehicle on insuranceQuote s list with an MSRP of $34,345 the annual cost to insure it is $1,301. This means the Explorer offered the best car insurance cost ratio at 3.8 percent.

Other SUVs and pickups, including the GMC Sierra, Chevrolet Silverado and Chevrolet Equinox, also offered good auto insurance value.

Meanwhile, the Ford Focus offered the worst insurance value at a cost ratio of 7.71 percent.

That s because while the Focus is the cheapest vehicle on this list with an MSRP of $18,045 it costs $1,391 to insure each year. This is slightly higher than the more expensive Explorer.

In a phone interview, Adams said the study found even affordable vehicles don t always have the best insurance deals.

The biggest takeaway I got from the study is just because you buy a relatively inexpensive vehicle you shouldn t assume your insurance will also be relatively inexpensive, said Adams.

Higher-priced lights shine more brightly but not farther

A website touting the Sylvania SilverStar headlight bulb says it provides “up to 30 percent” greater visibility down the road. That sounds impressive until you read the fine print: “compared with worn standard halogen” bulbs. Still, such claims are making premium-priced halogen bulbs an alluring choice for drivers.

To see how those premium bulbs stack up against one another, we put eight of them, costing $20 to $80, through a range of tests in our labs and at our test track. We tested the low-beam performance of single-filament (9003) and dual-filament (H7) bulbs from GE, Hella, Philips, and Sylvania, and PIAA’s dual-filament bulb. We also compared their performance with that of two standard bulbs from GE and Helio, costing $20 and $10, respectively, and to the original-equipment (OE) bulbs that came in our 2012 Hyundai Accent and Volkswagen Passat test cars.

We found that the premium bulbs, as a group, deliver a whiter light and up to 19 percent more output than the standard or OE bulbs, and that can be more pleasing for drivers. But none of the premium bulbs allowed us to see farther on our headlight test course than the standard or OE bulbs. That’s because distance is determined more by the size and shape of the lamp’s reflector or lens than by the bulb. We also found little difference in light output among the premium bulbs; no more than the differences normally experienced from power fluctuations while driving.

Bottom line. Premium bulbs might be a good choice if you prefer a more intense or whiter light, but don’t expect big changes in the distance you can see compared with standard or new OE bulbs. For the premium bulbs we tested, shop by price.

Car buyers with bad credit are getting increasingly bigger car loans as the economy improves.

The latest data from credit bureau TransUnion show that car buyers in the subprime credit category have seen a 6.6 percent increase in car loan balances from the first quarter of this year, compared to the same period in 2012. That increase marks an 11 percent jump of auto loan balances over the first quarter of 2011. Currently, the average auto loan balance for a consumer with subprime credit has risen $1,200 in 2013 over the same period in 2012.

Car loan balances on the whole only increased 4 percent in 2012 from the same period in 2012 and 8 percent over the last two years.

The increase in auto loan amounts should be a relief to car buyers with bad credit, but it is a bit of a concern to TransUnion analysts who noted that although delinquency rates have not increased during the last two years, there could be an economic burden on lenders if more loans become delinquent due to the increased balances.

Surveillance camera catches car theft from man’s garage


An Independence man is hoping for answers after his car and other valuable items were stolen out of his open garage.

John Macias wanted to share the message with other homeowners that an open door can be an open invitation for theft.

“I got home around 10 o’clock and my youngest son was sleeping, so we carried him in the house,” Macias said. “(We) forgot to shut the garage door.”

While his family slept and the door was open, thieves made one pass and then marched a couple hundred yards and into his home.

“It’s a very, very uneasy feeling,” he said. “I feel violated.”

Macias installed security cameras over the summer and the whole theft was recorded. For about 15 minutes, the thieves rummaged through his belongings and carried things out.

“My bag of tools was right here,” he said.

He also lost toys, a Weedeater and a camera with hundreds of priceless family pictures.

He said he’s relieved that his family is safe.

“It’s kind of unnerving to know that somebody was in my house while I was sleeping and while my children were in here sleeping,” he said. “(I’m) just thankful that they didn’t come through the door. It could have been a different ending.”

The biggest blow, he said, was when thieves noticed the car was unlocked and the keys were inside. The surveillance video shows the car being driven right out of the garage.

Macias said he’s learned his lesson.

“(I’m) definitely closing the garage door now,” he said.

Police said home security cameras can help them with leads almost every day, but there’s still been no arrests in the case and no sign of the stolen car. He said it’s a black Kia Optima with Missouri license plate KJ0U8X.

A woman came into Alan Helfman’s showroom in Houston in October looking to buy a car for her daily commute. Even though her credit score was below 500, in the bottom eighth percentile, she drove away with a new Dodge Dart. A year ago, “I would’ve told her don’t even bother coming in,” says Helfman, who owns River Oaks Chrysler Jeep Dodge Ram, where sales rose about 20 percent this year. “But she had a good job, so I told her to bring a phone bill, a light bill, your last couple of paycheck stubs, and bring me some down payment.”

As the fifth anniversary of the Federal Reserve’s policy of keeping interest rates near zero approaches, the market for subprime borrowing is again becoming frothy, this time in the car business instead of housing. U.S. auto sales, on pace for the best year since 2007, are increasingly being fueled by borrowers with spotty credit. They accounted for more than 27 percent of loans for new vehicles in the first half of the year, the highest proportion since Experian Automotive (EXPN:LN ) began tracking the data in 2007. That compares with 25 percent last year and 18 percent in 2009, as lenders pulled back during the recession. “Perhaps more than any other factor, easing credit has been the key to the U.S. auto recovery,” Adam Jonas, an analyst with Morgan Stanley (MS ). wrote in an October note to investors.

The money for subprime loans comes from yield-starved investors who buy bonds backed by them. Issuance of such bonds, which pay higher rates than U.S. government debt, soared to $17.2 billion this year, more than double the amount sold during the same period in 2010, but still below the peak of about $20 billion in 2005, according to Harris Trifon, an analyst at Deutsche Bank (DB ) .

The interest rates on subprime auto loans can climb to 19 percent, according to Standard Poor’s (MHFI ). “Right now, you have to have fairly bad credit to be paying above 3 percent,” says Jessica Caldwell, an analyst with auto research firm Chrysler Group (F:IM ) has been a beneficiary of the subprime boom. Fifty-eight percent of loans taken out to purchase its Dodge brand vehicles in October were above an annual percentage rate of 4.2 percent, the industry average, according to Edmunds. The average loan for a Dodge charged an APR of 7.4 percent, and 23 percent of the loans had APRs of more than 10 percent, making Dodge the brand with the highest percentage of loans at more than 10 percent, followed closely by Chrysler and Mitsubishi (7211:JP ). Dodge’s U.S. sales rose 17 percent this year through October compared with a year earlier, propelling Chrysler Group to 43 straight months of rising sales.

About 13 issuers have raised money in the asset-backed bond market to make subprime auto loans this year, according to Citigroup (C ). Among them are GM Financial, the lender known as AmeriCredit before it was acquired by General Motors (GM ) in 2010, and new entrants such as Exeter Finance, owned by Blackstone Group (BX ). Exeter has issued $900 million of bonds linked to subprime auto loans this year, data compiled by Bloomberg show. Exeter has higher loss rates compared with other lenders, S P said in a Sept. 17 report. A spokeswoman for Exeter declined to comment.

Shoddy home loans packaged into bonds by Wall Street banks fueled the financial crisis. Subprime auto loans are a good investment, Helfman says: “A person that has to get from point A to point B, they’re not going to jeopardize their job. They have to pay the car payment before they pay anything else.” His Dodge Dart customer with the bad credit had to pay a higher-than-average interest rate on her loan. “It wasn’t pretty, but it wasn’t crazy,” he says. She was “so happy she couldn’t see straight.”

Re: Sergio.  I came in to look at a VW Jetta Tdi that I saw on Craigslist.  The VW that was advertised wasn t actually a TDI, but a gas engine, so the sales person too me to a TDI Passat instead.  The diesel engine on the Passat needed a tune up at the very least, so I was going to take it to my mechanic for a check before buying it.  The guy who was trying to close the sale was receptive to my low offer for the car, but I didn t like the way he was treating me so I decided to walk away from the deal.

Honestly, I think you ve got some good people working for you and maybe your sales model is working, but it s not the right fit for me.  Frankly, and I hope this is constructive, I wasn t impressed by the condition of a lot of the cars on the lot.  My expectation is that the dealer has done their due diligence to make sure that every car that leaves their lot is in excellent condition and the staff provides excellent customer service.  That s how loyal customers are won.  If your product and service is superior, people will keep coming back and they ll tell their friends.

When I saw the commercials for State Farm and they said Like a good neighbor, State Farm is there I thought no insurance company is that good. But I was wrong! We switched to State Farm after I got into my first accident and it was cheaper than what we were paying before with our prior insurance company. They had great deals and low rates.

The staff at our agents location were excellent. When ever we would come in for anything they would stop whatever it was they were doing to help us and they made sure that they had taken care of and answered every question before we walked out the door. They also made us aware of all the different products they have without being a pushy sales person. We have along with our auto insurance, renters insurance, life insurance on both me and my husband, and personal articles insurance such as our wedding rings. And with all of that we are paying the same as we were when we were with our other company just having our one car insured.

The other thing that State Farm does that a lot of other insurance agents don’t is that they offer dividends at the end of the year if the company has done well and didn’t have an overage of claims in the previous year. We started our insurance in the middle of the year and the beginning of the next year we got a check from them! That was awesome.

And lastly our agent calls us every couple months to check in with us and to review our policy with us. I love that they do this because sometimes there are things that I want to change or add but don’t always think to do it.

My husband and I love State Farm and we aren’t planning on switching insurance company’s any time soon.

The Saint Louis Auto Show opens Thursday and runs through Sunday at America’s Center and Edward Jones Dome, showcasing hundreds of new cars, trucks, SUVs, crossovers and even exotics.

But that’s only the start for car buffs.

Not only will the show spotlight virtually every 2014 model from more than 20 manufacturers, it also will provide a look at some classics and a glimpse into the near automotive future with a dozen or so 2015 models on display.

Among the 2015s not yet in showrooms, but at the show, will be:

• GM’s full-size SUVs: Cadillac Escalade and Escalade ESV, Chevrolet Tahoe and Suburban and GMC Yukon and Yukon XL

The Horseless Carriage Club of Missouri spotlights “The Golden Glory Years” of the American automobile industry with four decades of classics, from an Auburn Cabriolet and Packard Sport Phaeton, both from 1934, to a 1972 Chrysler New Yorker Brougham. In between will be a ’41 Packard, an extremely rare ’51 Frazer four-door convertible and a ’66 Cadillac Coupe DeVille. Separate from the HCCM display will be a 1905 Fiat, said to be valued at $2.5 million.

Returning to St. Louis for the 2014 auto show is the Million Dollar Mile, which highlights some of the most exclusive cars in the world. Among them will be a Lamborghini, a Maserati and a Rolls-Royce.

Chrysler and Toyota will offer visitors a chance to sample a variety of 2014 models, including the Jeep Cherokee and Grand Cherokee diesel, Fiat 500L, Dodge Durango, Ram 1500 and Toyota Avalon, Corolla, 4Runner, Highlander, RAV4 and Tundra.

In addition to new cars, the show will provide “drifting” demonstrations with champion driver Vaughn Gittin Jr. motorcycle stunt riding with EightUp, a Kids Zone for youngsters, the electric-car Eco City, a chance to meet and greet hockey legend Brett Hull and more.

So, if you are a learner driver, or you drive a sports or high performance car, a mainstream insurer will either turn down your application flat, or charge an unaffordable premium. Learner driver insurance

The problems can start before you have even passed your driving test. Insurers are wary of learner drivers because they lack both qualifications and experience. Insurance can therefore be tricky. If you are learning to drive at a recognised driving school, you shouldn’t have to worry about insurance during your lessons.

But what about private practise with your Dad or a friend?  Driving authorities recommend at least 20 hours of private practice, in addition to 47 hours of professional tuition. Car insurance for new drivers

Newly qualified drivers pose a problem for many insurers because they are high risk. They might make up only about 7% of the driving population, but they are involved in 21% of the injury collisions. And one in five newly qualified drivers has a crash within a year.  So it’s perhaps not surprising that many mainstream insurers steer clear, or rack up the premiums. However, there are specialist car insurance policies available to newly qualified drivers – and a number of steps they can take to reduce their premiums. Car insurance for young drivers

Young drivers are another high risk group – for the same reason as newly qualified drivers. Car insurance for drivers between the ages of 17 and 22 is typically more than double that paid by the average motorist. This statistic explains why: teenage motorists are ten times more likely to be killed or seriously injured in a road accident than drivers over the age of 35. Black box insurance

Insurers consider a number of risk factors before they quote a premium, including your age, postcode, the make and model of the vehicle. They also ask about any previous claims, but it’s quite a crude measure of your driving skills. A careful driver can end up paying a sky high premium because they are young and live in a statistically dodgy area. Telematics insurance is a little different. Basically, the insurer fits a tracking device to your vehicle – known as a black box – so that it can monitor when, where and how your drive. The premiums can then more accurately reflect your personal risk profile. Black box insurance could reduce premiums for a wide range of motorists, but is particularly useful for young drivers who often have trouble finding a decent policy at an affordable price.

Modified car insurance

Some motorists aren’t happy with a standard vehicle. They want to customise a car to make it their own, perhaps adding spoilers or tinted windows. The alterations might seem harmless enough, but insurers don’t like cars that deviate from the original manufacturer’s specification – and they charge higher premiums. Why? It’s all down to the greater risk of costly claims. A car with a souped-up engine is more likely to be involved in an accident than a gentle runabout. Plus, it is more expensive to repair. Classic car insurance

Owners of classic cars might be able to arrange cheaper cover than a motorist who drives an ordinary saloon for two reasons: classic cars are often better maintained than standard vehicles; they are also driven fewer miles. There is no standard definition of a classic car for insurance purposes. Some firms consider a ten-year-old car a classic, while others do not classify a vehicle as classic until it is 20 years old. So it’s worth shopping for classic car insurance cover in order to make sure that you get the best possible deal.

Sports car insurance

Sports cars can spook insurers because they are generally capable of greater speeds than standard vehicles – and the bill for parts and repairs can be high. In other words, claims are not only more likely but are more likely to be expensive.  Mainstream insurers either refuse cover for sports cars or charge whopping premiums. Kit car insurance

Kit cars are built from scratch by the owner – rather like putting up some Ikea shelves, only a bit more complicated. It is essential to take out specialist insurance because a Kit car is not like an ordinary car. For example, you will probably need cover while you assemble the vehicle so that all the component parts are insured. Many kit car owners also want salvage retention cover so that they can salvage any usable parts if the car is involved in an accident. Kit cars are also more tricky to value than standard vehicles. Plus they can increase in value as they get older, so again, specialist kit car insurance cover is important.

Multi-car insurance

It’s not unusual these days to find more than one car sitting in a driveway or garage. If you are a multi-car household, you might want to consider a multi-car policy. Determining the Rate

The interest rate you get when financing a new or used car can vary quite a bit from the advertised rates you see on TV or read in the paper. Probably the biggest influence on your rate is your credit rating (see How Credit Scores Work to get the full story). Your credit history and credit score tell lenders a lot about your money habits and are designed to give them an idea of what their risk is if they loan you money. They often raise the interest rate if your loan is seen as high-risk.

Another thing that affects the rate you get is the length (term ) of the loan. Typically, the shorter the loan, the lower the rate. Keep in mind that the shorter the term, the higher your payments will be.

Used cars will have higher rates than new cars. The newer the car, the lower the rate. (You may find an exception to this rule at some credit unions. Some give the same interest rate for new and used cars.)

Your geographic location can also be a factor in the rate you get. Your cousin may have gotten 7 percent on the other side of the country, but in your home town, 8.5 percent may be the lowest rate you can find.

Car dealers don t normally offer short-term leases on new cars. Nor do they lease used cars. They only offer new-car leases that typically start at 24 months. Leases for 36 and 39 months are the most common.

If a shorter term, say a 1 year lease , is required, there s another way to do it. We ll tell you how and where.

Why a Short Term Lease?

There are many reasons someone might want a vehicle for a relatively short period of time — 3 months, 6 months, or a year. A temporary job assignment. School. Temporary financial situation. Special family needs. Military deployment. Want to test-drive a particular make/model for a while. Don t have cash for down payment and dealer fees.

So What s the Answer?

In many cases a long-term rental from a car rental company may be the answer. Rent terms can range from one day to several months, although longer rentals can be very expensive. For the best rates for a long-term rental, rent from smaller local car rental companies, not large national companies such as Hertz or Alamo.

As a rule of thumb, if your needs are for about six months or less, renting may be the best solution. However, for six months to 24 months, or more, you may be better to consider a short-term lease in the form of a lease assumption .

Many short term car lease assumptions  are being offered at bargain prices, with no down payment — many with cash back incentives if you know where to look.

How Does it Work?

All short term car leases are lease assumptions or transfers or takeovers.  That is, one party arranges to take over a lease from another party who wants out of their existing lease. The new lessee takes over the car and assumes the monthly payments for the remaining months of the original lease.

Remaining time on the leases can be as little as 3-6 months, as high as 39 months.

Short-term lease takeovers are a great way to get a low monthly payments, with no down payment or up-front dealer fees. In many cases, desperate sellers are offering cash incentives to make the deals more attractive. It is one of the best ways to get into a relatively late model car, still under warranty, at the lowest possible cost.

The process of lease assumption is one that involves the seller s lease company making the necessary paperwork and contract changes to switch the lease over. It s usually fast and costs about $100, depending on the lease company.

At the end of a short term lease, the new buyer is responsible for returning the vehicle to the lease company, or optionally purchasing the vehicle. If the vehicle is returned, the new lessee can be charged for excessive damages or mileage just as the original lessee would have if they had kept their vehicle.

Although you can sometimes find lease sellers in newspaper classifieds or auto trader magazines, this is not the best way. If you happen to find a lease in this way, remember it s not legal and proper until the selling party s lease company approves and changes the contract. It might be tough to find a deal in the North on these cars but if you come across one in Southern climes, snap it up. It s a rare bird down there, which means prices should be lower.

Ford Fusion: Again the current generation is a stunner but you re going to be content driving the previous generation Ford Fusion. It s good, reliable transportation and, because of the amazing design of the new one, should have good residual values that make it a bargain to obtain.

Mazda Mazda6: This four-door sedan was a total victim of bad timing. It was introduced during the height of the recession and Mazda simply didn t put the marketing dollars behind it. Hose the car down then with the bodywork already wet, hand wash the panels using a sponge and some soapy water. Don’t use washing up liquid as it smears and don’t hose down the engine bay as you might damage the electrical systems. Once you’ve cleaned the outer panels focus on:

  • The door shuts

Once you’ve washed everything, leather down the bodywork and glass, to get rid of any drying out marks. While the car dries out, turn your attention to the interior.

  • Vacuum the carpets and seats

When selling a used car. most people’s number one concern is, “How am I going to handle the payment?” After all, it’s increasingly easy to counterfeit a cashier’s check, personal checks can be written on empty bank accounts, and who wants to handle thousands of dollars in cash?

It is also the most disconcerting because it offers no protection if stolen. However, there are ways to be paid in cash that are safe. Both solutions are inconvenient and require you completing the sales transaction during business hours. So what? You have invested a lot of money into your used car. You don’t want to get ripped off.

  • Deliver the paperwork along with the car the next night.
  • Don’t let the buyer squawk about his or her money being tied up and not trusting you. It’s your used car. He or she has to buy it under your conditions.
  • Keep in mind, when it comes to payment in personal transactions, the customer is not always right.

The Escrow Option

This option works if you are selling a used car to an out-of-area buyer (common in online transactions): reduces the potential risk of fraud by acting as a trusted third party that collects, holds and disburses funds according to Buyer and Seller instructions. Escrow services are provided by a licensed and regulated escrow company.

  • It accepts various forms of payment, but keep in mind the process varies depending on how the buyer pays.
  • This is the best way to go if you are dealing with a foreign buyer, too, even though some people say wire transfers are safe.
