#auto insurance quotes comparison

Lots of things can affect your rates. Shop around and compare.

Feb 9, 2014 at 8:15PM

Whether you’re in the market for your first car — and your first insurance policy — or you’ve been insured for years and are considering a change, trying to compare auto insurance quotes can be a frustrating process. What kind of coverage does your quote include? Will it change once you’ve input your driving record? Are you in for any unpleasant surprises?

If you’re looking for a quick and easy way to compare car insurance quotes online, try our Car Insurance Comparison Tool. It offers the opportunity to adjust your insurance quotes based on a number of variables, including how and how often you use your car, and who’ll be driving it. While you can’t control all of the factors that affect your premiums, you can do your research and pick the best company for you, based on your driving habits and demographics.

Who will be driving your car?

As anyone who’s ever tried to insure a teen driver knows, the process will make your auto insurance quotes will go through the roof. Car insurance rates can be much higher for older drivers as well. However, some car insurance companies provide ways to offset the cost of insuring both younger and older drivers.

State Farm: Those insuring younger drivers might want to consider State Farm. The insurer provides a discount of up to 25% for full-time students under 25 with good grades. If academics aren’t your young driver’s strength, he can still save 15% if he’s under 25, has completed an approved Steer Clear course, and has had a clean driving record for at least three years.

AARP/The Hartford: On top of the discount you get for being an AARP member, you can get an additional discount — good for three years — for completing a safe driving course. Drivers under 21 who’ve completed a safe driving course, or students under 25 who maintain good grades, are also eligible for discounts.

Allstate: Older drivers might want to go with Allstate, though the insurer offers discounts at both ends of the age spectrum. If you’re at least 55 and retired, you can save up to 10% on your premiums, without taking a qualifying course. If you’re under 25, single, and a full-time student with a solid academic record, you could save up to 20%. Younger drivers could save up to 10% for completing the teenSMART program.

Esurance: Older and younger drivers both have reasons to choose Esurance. Those 50 and over — depending on their state — can get up to a 10% discount for three years if they’ve completed a safe driving course. Full-time students under 25 with a 3.0 GPA or higher can also get a 10% discount.

Liberty Mutual: Full-time students, new graduates, and new retirees all qualify for discounts, depending on their residency and other factors.

How will you use your car?

While many Americans use their cars to commute between work or school and home, many also work from home or commute via public transit, using their cars mostly for convenience. The purpose for which you use your car can definitely affect your insurance rates. Most companies take it into account when preparing your quote, and some offer additional discounts.

State Farm: Like many other insurance companies, State Farm now allows drivers to collect and share information about their driving habits through their Drive Safe Save Program. If you’re paying too much for the amount you drive, this could lead to a reduction in your rates, but if you have any concerns about your driving, consider what else State Farm might learn about you before signing up.

Allstate: If you have a vehicle you use mostly for farm or ranch work, you’ll save 10% on its premiums with Allstate.

How much coverage do you need?

With a few exceptions, all states require drivers to have some auto insurance coverage, but whether or not you purchase a comprehensive plan, or other optional add-ons, is up to you. If you’re insured with Esurance, you could save money by electing not to use its roadside assistance program. Drivers in most states who choose another service — like AAA — can save up to 5% on their premium.

Do you have a good driving record?

It should come as no surprise that your driving history — from speeding tickets to accidents — can affect your premiums quite a bit. While making a few mistakes on the road can cost you, maintaining a clear driving record can also save you money.

State Farm: If you’ve gone three years without an incident behind the wheel, you can save up to 10% with State Farm.

Allstate: Longtime safe drivers will get the maximum discount with Allstate. Those who’ve gone three years without a moving violation or at-fault accident will save 22%. After five years, they’ll save 35%.

Esurance: Gone five years without an at-fault accident claim or a DUI conviction? You can save 10%-25% off your Esurance premium. However, you must have switched to Esurance from another carrier to qualify.

Remember: Car insurance quotes aren’t set in stone. After you run a car insurance comparison online, be sure to call the companies that seem to offer the best deals and tell them the specifics of your situation. The sales representative can be more precise about your prospective premium, including any additional discounts. It takes time, but if you put in the work — looking for auto insurance quotes online and following up — you’ll be able to maximize your savings, while staying protected on the road.

Reigning NHRA POWERade Top Fuel champion Tony Schumacher raced to his second victory in his last three starts Sunday at Pacific Raceways to continue his rapid climb up the points standings. The

three-time champ has gone from eighth place to fourth in the last four races — including three straight final round appearances — and has closed to within 150 points of Doug Kalitta’s series lead with his win at the $1.4 million Schuck’s Auto Supply NHRA Nationals presented by Lucas Oil.

Whit Bazemore and Allen Johnson joined Schumacher in the winner’s circle as each ended long winless streaks with victories here. Bazemore had gone 31 races without a win until beating points leader and teammate Ron Capps in the Seattle finale, while Johnson ended a 34-race dry spell by

downing surprise finalist Tom Martino, who was racing for just the second time this year.

Schumacher had little trouble beating Dave Grubnic in the Top Fuel final with a 4.690 at 321.96 mph in his U.S. Army dragster to Grubnic’s 4.761 at 316.75 in his StriVectin-SD dragster. It was Schumacher’s 32nd career victory and second at this track.

2015 Detroit Auto Show – Preview

Filed under:

Posted on 01.12.2015 07:30 by Jonathan Lopez

As we bid farewell to 2014 in a flurry of champagne toasts and fireworks, we also look forward to the promises and possibilities of a new year. No, we aren’t talking about another shot at those broken resolutions. We’re talking about the 2015 Detroit Auto Show, also known as the North American International Auto Show, scheduled to kick off January 12, 2015. Considered by many to be the most important industry event this side of the Atlantic, we’ve already been treated to a multiplicity of rumors, teases, and full reveals ahead of the big sheet pulls. All the leading manufacturers will make an appearance, and as the first major press gathering of year, you can be sure there will be plenty of huge announcements and surprises in store.

Where is it and when is it?

The 2015 Detroit Auto Show will be held at the Cobo Center, which is located at One Washington Blvd. in downtown Detroit, MI. The show is open to the public January 17th through the 25th. Tickets cost $13 per adult, $7 for seniors and children, and are available for purchase here .

Transportation to the center is available via the Detroit People Mover, an elevated rail system that makes connections to restaurants, bars, and other downtown attractions for $0.75 per passenger. Click here to view the railway schedule and route. Alternatively, parking is available at the Joe Louis Arena at 900 West Jefferson, the Cobo Roof Deck at 625 West Congress, and the Millennium Garage at 432 West Congress. Discounted airfare to the show is available via Delta – learn more here. The weather in Detroit at this time of the year is very cold, with highs expected at 33 degrees F and lows around 20 degrees F, so dress appropriately.

Press Conferences and Events

With several days of press action in the lead up to public access, there is a LOT going on. These are the critical reveals, when automakers finally spill the official beans on that model you’ve been waiting so long to hear about, plus the industry events, where emerging trends are discussed and the best are recognized with awards. Check these lists to make sure you stay up to date on the latest news from Detroit, and stay tuned to TopSpeed for all the important tidbits:

Muscle Cars

Building on the already potent GT350 that made its debut at the Los Angeles Auto Show in November 2014, the R is expected to be lighter, faster, and tuned specifically for track usage. We presume there to be bigger aero on the outside, six-point harnesses on the inside, and even more power from the naturally aspirated, 5.2-liter V-8, which already rolls out over 500 horsepower and 440 pound-feet of torque in the non-R trim GT350. According to Road Track. you should also expect a six-speed manual and a specially tuned limited-slip differential. We’re thinking 0-to-60 mph in less than four seconds, not to mention handling capability heretofore unseen in a Mustang.

Commercial Auto Insurance For Your Business

Commercial vehicle insurance is needed to cover the cars, trucks, and vans used in conducting your business. Large fleets, as well as small businesses, should be properly covered by a commercial auto insurance policy.

What is commercial vehicle insurance?

Commercial Vehicle Insurance is a policy of physical damage and liability coverages for amounts, situations, and usage not covered by a personal auto policy. Seems obvious, doesn’t it? But, seriously, knowing the difference between a personal auto insurance policy and a commercial auto policy (and when you need which) is important business for your business. This type of business insurance covers a variety of vehicles. You may also have heard of this coverage referred to as commercial auto insurance, commercial car insurance, truck insurance, or fleet insurance.

Why do you need commercial vehicle insurance?

That’s a good question. Certain business usage and vehicle types may be excluded from personal policies. Why? Since personal auto policies were not meant for businesses, they are written and rated differently. More important to you a business owner or manager businesses often need the particular coverages found in a commercial auto insurance policy.

Determining whether your situation requires commercial auto coverage can still be confusing. Here’s a little more information and examples of when you need commercial insurance .

What does commercial vehicle insurance cover?

Commercial vehicle insurance, like your personal auto policy, provides similar coverages such as liability, collision, comprehensive, medical payments (or personal injury protection) and uninsured motorist coverage. However, there are also differences between a commercial auto insurance policy and your personal auto policy that may include eligibility, definitions, coverages, exclusions, and limits.

What are the coverages?

  • Bodily injury liability coverage pays for bodily injury or death resulting from an accident for which you are at fault and in most cases provides you with a legal defense.
  • Property damage liability coverage provides you with protection if your vehicle accidently damages another person’s property and in most cases provides you with a legal defense.
  • Combined single limit (CSL) Liability policies typically offer separate limits that apply to bodily injury claims for property damage. A combined single limits policy has the same dollar amount of coverage per covered occurrence whether bodily injury or property damage, one person or several.
  • Medical payments, no-fault or personal injury coverage usually pays for the medical expenses of the driver and passengers in your vehicle incurred as a result of a covered accident regardless of fault.
  • Uninsured motorist coverage pays for your injuries and, in some circumstances, certain property damage caused by an uninsured or a hit-and-run driver. In some cases, underinsured motorist coverage is also included. This is for cases in which the at-fault driver has insufficient insurance.
  • Comprehensive physical damage coverage pays for damage to your vehicle from theft, vandalism, flood, fire, and other covered perils.
  • Collision coverage pays for damage to your vehicle when it hits or is hit by another object.
