Natural Scoliosis Care Avoids Surgery or Braces

No one is sure who will get scoliosis or why.

Scoliosis is well-known, but often not well-understood. Essentially, scoliosis is any sideways curvature of the spine: looked at from the side, the spine has a normal S-shaped curve from front to back, but from the back the spine should appear straight. A lateral curve is abnormal and a sign of scoliosis, which can have serious health consequences besides affecting appearance and posture. Early detection is important, and so is finding a natural solution that avoids uncomfortable scoliosis braces and dangerous scoliosis surgery. Read on to learn more.

The cause of scoliosis is often unknown (referred to as idiopathic scoliosis ), though some cases may be congenital since scoliosis tends to run in families. Although scoliosis usually appears between the ages of 5 and 15, it probably begins earlier and is not detected until a growth spurt makes the curvature more noticeable. Spinal injury from the birth process, leg-length discrepancies, birth defects or genetic factors that have not yet been identified may all be related to scoliosis.

No one knows why girls are more likely to develop scoliosis than boys, but they seem to suffer from scoliosis at a rate at least twice that for boys. And adults can have scoliosis as well: most adult scoliosis is actually idiopathic or congenital scoliosis that went unnoticed or untreated in their adolescence, but some have a type of scoliosis referred to as degenerative scoliosis. which is likely related to osteoarthritis of the spine. Regardless of the scoliosis cause. something can be done to help.

Scoliosis Symptoms

Noticing scoliosis symptoms early is the key to preventing scoliosis from worsening. Signs to look for include:

  • One shoulder higher than the other
  • One hip higher than the other
  • Shoulder blade protruding more on one side
  • Uneven waistline
  • Uneven shoe wear
  • Clothes fitting unevenly
  • Leaning to one side

Pain in the legs or back, along with fatigue, are often present – but these are normally disregarded as normal growing pains. If the curve continues to develop, the spine can also become twisted, causing the ribs on one side to become more prominent. In severe cases, scoliosis can also interfere with breathing and other organ functions.

Even if the curvature is not severe enough to affect a child s general health, it is often a source of embarrassment and results in diminished self-esteem. Even a slight curvature can make a child s clothes fit improperly or give her posture a decided lean, which can become magnified in the child s mind and play havoc with her developing body image. A natural approach to scoliosis can help restore your child s confidence.

Scoliosis Treatment

Scoliosis treatment varies. Depending on the degree of curvature and the patient s age, one of three options is generally recommended: do nothing (in cases of mild curvature), wear a scoliosis brace (for mild to moderate curvature when the child is still growing), or undergo scoliosis surgery (in moderate to severe cases).

If the child is nearly done growing and the curve is quite mild, it s unlikely that it will progress further. But if he or she is still growing, the curve will likely worsen with each subsequent growth spurt. In the do nothing scenario, frequent X-rays are typically recommended to make sure the curve is not progressing. Repeated exposure to X-ray radiation is linked to many types of cancers.

Although today s braces are made of molded polymer materials and worn under the clothes, unlike the bulky metal contraptions of the past, they are still uncomfortable (after all, they re keeping the spine from moving in the direction it wants to move) and must be worn day and night. And even though they are minimally noticeable, kids believe that everyone can tell, which further compounds their self-esteem problems.

Surgery involves fusing vertebrae of the spine together. Metal rods, wires or screws are used to hold the spine in place while the vertebrae are joining, and then are left in the body to hold the spine straight and prevent further curvature. Besides the risks inherent in any invasive procedure, fusing vertebrae together can result in other back problems in the future.

A fourth option is available for treating scoliosis. and it s totally non-invasive, safe and doesn t involve braces. Find out more about it here.

A Natural Approach to Scoliosis

Scoliosis doesn’t have to affect your child’s self esteem when you try a natural approach to healing.

Obviously, you want to do whatever s necessary to protect your child s health – and you want to help him or her develop a positive body image and good self-esteem. Fortunately, these goals are not mutually exclusive: you can do something about the scoliosis, without resorting to risky surgery or embarrassing braces. Chiropractic has had excellent success with scoliosis, and it s safe, 100% natural and non-invasive.

You may have tried chiropractic yourself, but never realized it could work for scoliosis. Or you may be new to the idea of chiropractic. Either way, you ll be happy to learn that chiropractic is safe for your child – even for newborns – and works with the body gently to restore proper alignment, rather than forcing the spine to straighten using steel rods. The application of precise chiropractic adjustments helps restore the spine s natural alignment, helping the relevant muscles to strengthen and the posture to improve. Results vary and obviously cannot be guaranteed, but stopping the progression of scoliosis curvature and even eliminating the existing curvature are common results with chiropractic!

Chiropractic is a highly regulated, licensed health care field requiring advanced degrees as well as continuing education. Thanks to the following factors, chiropractic is the premier method of alternative health care in the world:

  • It s safe for patients of all ages: newborn to elderly
  • It has no side effects or interaction issues

  • It s effective!

Backpack FAQ

Many people wonder if the backpacks kids carry can cause scoliosis. While there is no conclusive evidence to support this, the fact is that backpacks are dangerous to the development of your child s spine and musculature. Tightened security measures have prompted many schools to eliminate lockers, forcing children to tote all of their schoolbooks around all day. Follow these backpack safety guidelines to reduce the risk of injury:

Why did you choose to pursue an MBA?

I wanted to gain a better understanding of managerial decision-making procedures as well as further my education to include more applicable business making decisions.

Please comment on the academic experience at Georgia Tech.

I went into the program thinking I knew everything there was to know, but from day one I realized that there was so much more to learn and discover based on the amazing content and the depth of knowledge of the professors. Throughout the program, I was constantly telling people how much I was learning every day; it was so fulfilling to know that my investment was paying off daily.

Please comment on the relevance and quality of the program to your career goals.

The program is of high quality because I was actively aware how relevant the material was to what I faced in my daily work life. The quality is also reflected in that I truly took what I learned and applied it to my own personal financial decision-making on a daily basis. This also is a testament to even the order in which they suggest you take the courses, which shows how much thought and effort has been put into the curriculum.

Is there anything you’d like to add?

The program has been very valuable to me not only because of the education I received but also the relationships I built. The faculty members that I encountered were very impressive because of not only their depth of knowledge on a particular subject, but also because of all of their practical experience in the subject they are instructing.

Returning to school after being out for 10 years was daunting at first, but the structure of the program, group assignments, and a realistic workload made it very easy to adapt and return into the mode of student.

Protection against uterine cancer vs. the risk of breast cancer. The decision to take estrogen and progesterone supplements can be daunting. In the world of women’s health. it could be the decision of decisions: Should I take hormone replacement therapy. The considerations can be so deep, and the scientific debates so confusing, many women are turning to herbal and food supplements. hoping they will calm the symptoms of menopause while staving off heart disease and osteoporosis .

Though the science is still young, research offers some encouragement for women seeking non-pharmaceutical ways to cut down on mood swings and hot flashes .

Soy to the World

The most widely cited natural remedy is soy, which is very high in phytoestrogens, or plant estrogens. Other sources are red clover and flaxseed. both of which are available as supplements .

Phytoestrogens are much less powerful than pharmaceutical or natural estrogen, and they enter the cells through a different receptor. That’s why scientists believe that soy doesn’t promote breast cancer the way other hormones may. In the form of tofu, miso, and other preparations, soy is a staple of diets in Japan, where rates of breast cancer are lower and symptoms of menopause milder than in western countries.

However, the latest research on soy is contradictory. A new study reported in Archives of Internal Medicine found there was no difference between soy and a placebo in relieving menopausal symptoms such as bone loss or vaginal dryness. At the study’s start, about 50% of women reported having hot flashes. By the end of the study, more women in the soy group reported hot flashes compared to the placebo group, 48% vs. 32%.

Another study, released in the Journal of Clinical Nutrition , tested similar doses of soy against a placebo in 224 early menopausal women. It also concluded that soy offered little protection against bone loss.

On the bright side, after researcher reviewed 19 studies of soy for hot flashes, they concluded that compared to placebo, the use of soy resulted in about a 50% reduction in the frequency and severity of hot flashes.

Another analysis of 19 studies also found a benefit in soy supplements for hot flashes. The benefit, though, was very slight. That review, which was published in the journal Menopause in 2010, found that on average, soy supplements cut the number of daily hot flashes women had by less than half a single hot flash.

Herbal Choices

Also gaining scientific momentum is black cohosh. an herb used in the Native American community that has shown promise in treating hot flashes and insomnia. and possibly vaginal dryness. says Sadja Greenwood, MD, MPH, a San Francisco gynecologist and author of Menopause. Naturally .

European and American clinical studies have shown that black cohosh is effective for hot flashes and other menopausal symptoms. One review study published in 1998 in the Journal of Women’s Health concluded that black cohosh was a “safe and effective alternative to estrogen replacement therapy.” The National Institutes of Health (NIH) has just awarded more than $7 million to the University of Illinois to study black cohosh, along with other herbs for women’s health, including red clover and dong quai and ginseng, also promoted in herbal circles as menopausal remedies.

“Before taking black cohosh or any herbal supplement, talk to your doctor,” says Gail Mahady, PhD, a researcher at the new University of Illinois center established by the NIH grant. “There’s plenty of evidence to show it works, but we don’t know what the mechanism is. Until we know for sure, women who have problems with estrogen really must be cautious. There’s always the possibility of an adverse reaction.”

Useless Yams

Greenwood is far less impressed with wild yam creams, which have also been marketed to relieve menopausal symptoms. The products’ promoters claim the creams contain a precursor to progesterone — commonly taken alongside estrogen — that counteracts estrogen’s negative effect on the uterine lining. While naturally derived progesterone, available over the counter, can help with some symptoms like hot flashes, Greenwood says, the yam cream formulations aren’t effective.

Lifestyle for a Lifetime

The most effective alternative to hormone therapy, however, doesn’t come in a bottle. Physicians say that preventing heart disease. osteoporosis and cancer often boils down to lifestyle, one that includes regular exercise and a healthy diet. A diet high in calcium along with weight -bearing exercise bolsters bones. Avoiding high-fat foods and participating in regular aerobic exercise keeps the heart healthy.

These habits can prevent the diseases; studies have proven it over and over again. Consider it, Greenwood advises. “Those things are so much more effective than [most] any pill you can put in your mouth .”

Nelson Watts, MD, director of the Osteoporosis and Bone Health Program at The Emory Clinic in Atlanta, and principal investigator at the Atlanta site of the Women’s Health Initiative, offers a word of caution. “Often, diet and exercise are not enough by themselves.” he tells WebMD. “A woman needs to first talk with her doctor about what symptoms she wants to relieve, and look at the treatment options.”

CNA Classes by State

CNA Training Classes and Programs

Some of the most desirable, in-demand, and secure career paths in today’s economy can be found in the healthcare field. People will always need the services of health care workers and the demand has never been greater for these types of jobs. One of the quickest avenues leading you to a career in health care is to become a certified nursing assistant. The certified nurse aide may hold a different title depending on the state in which certification has been obtained. Individuals who complete a nursing assistant class, a CNA course or program and pass the state certification exam earn the title of Certified Nursing Assistant.

Other titles used to refer to a C.N.A include Patient Care Assistant (PCA), State Tested Nurse Aide (STNA) or Nursing Assistant Registered (NAR). All these titles refer to individuals who hold the same credentials, education, and skills and are commonly known as Certified Nurse Aides. To become a CNA, PCA, STNA, or NAR you must enroll in a state-approved nurse aide program, complete the classroom and clinical components of the course, and pass the CNA examination. According to Federal regulations, a nurse aide training class offered in any state throughout the United States must contain at least seventy-five hours of instruction, with sixteen hours dedicated to hands-on clinical practice. Use the map below to find certified nursing assistant classes in any state.

Nursing assistant programs prepare individuals for challenging the nurse aide certification exam and for entry level positions in health care environments. Each state has the authority to decide how many hours of training a nursing assistant course must consist of, as long as the minimum federal requirement of seventy-five hours is met. Students interested in attending CNA classes have a wide array of choices when it comes to selecting a training facility.

Nursing assistant courses are conducted at nursing homes, vocational schools, private schools, and community colleges. Program length, admission requirements, and cost of training vary depending on the policies of every training facility. Several states have implemented legislation which requires licensed long-term care facilities to reimburse CNA employees for the costs associated with training. An individual who has paid for nursing assistant training classes and who becomes employed by a nursing home within a year of obtaining certification, is eligible for financial reimbursement. Compared to other training programs in the health care field, nursing assistant classes are relatively short and inexpensive. Obtaining state certification as a CNA is the main requirement for securing a nurse aide job at a nursing home, hospital, rehabilitation or skilled nursing facility.

Questions, Comments, Suggestions

JoAnn P. on July 8, 2009 at 06:15 PM
Are online CNA training programs just as good as traditional nurse assistant courses or am I wasting my time?

Raquel on July 14, 2009 at 03:17 PM
A good way to compare two different nursing assistant classes is to look at the number of instructional hours provided by each course. How much time is dedicated to the classroom as well as the clinical component of the course? Does the online CNA program conduct hands-on, clinical practice on-site, or at a long-term care facility? Choose the online version of a nurse aide course only when it is very similar to a traditional program in terms of curriculum and practical training.

CNA Resources

Being a Successful C.N.A

Besides knowledge and proficiency there are many qualities which define a competent CNA. Most of the qualities listed below represent the reasons and motivational factors driving new individuals to become certified nurse aides.

A competent CNA shows support for others, as well as patience, compassion and empathy. To become a good nursing assistant one needs to understand the meaning of being a team player.
