Presumably, you want to test your fax machine by sending a fax from it and receiving a fax with it. Here’s how to do both:

To test the send functionality of your fax machine, send a one-page fax to 1-888-877-1655 or 1-503-200-1300. When it’s finished transmitting, point your web browser to Fax Toy — it’s a fun web site that displays whatever is faxed to that number. Within a minute, your fax should appear on the site. Click the thumbnail to see a large version.

To test the receive functionality of your fax machine, point your web browser to FaxZero: this site lets you send faxes for free to anywhere in the United States and Canada. Within a few minutes, your fax machine should ring — hopefully, it will automatically answer and spit out the test fax.

No it is fairly easy to do. You can use WordPress.com to even host it if you don t want to do it yourself. Once you have a theme and set it up its very easy to update daily.

Question: I m scanning into my old XP pc (its all i have left with a modem!) to fax but a lot of my faxes appear on faxtoy as illegible broken up text etc. The text is small to begin with and the scans look ok on my pc before sending but this is not a problem when sending from standalone fax machines.

I m scanning at 200 dpi bw to tiff. Can you recommend a more optimum setting for fax scanning?

    The SSAE 18 Reporting Standard SOC 1 SOC 2 SOC 3 Support and Guidance for SSAE18, SOC 1, SOC 2, and SOC 3 reporting standards

    Some organizations have heard of SAS 70, SSAE 16. and soon to be SSAE 18. but, don t really know WHY they need to pay to have a bunch of auditors trounce through their company for a month or two during the year, especially right after their financial audit just finished.
    The answer is simple: Many companies will not even think about using your company to perform services for them without a clean Type II Report in place.
    Some benefits of having an SSAE 16 performed :

    • Ability to perform outsourcing services for Public Companies.
      • If performing financially significant duties for a Public Company, they are required to use a SSAE 16 qualified provider as it is the only way to give investors assurance over controls that are not performed by the Company in question.
    • Public and Private companies are more likely to trust your organization with their data.
      • If you were to trust a company with your data, you would want complete assurance it will be handled with the utmost care
    • A year round accessible knowledge source (your auditors).
      • As a service organization, large or small, you will always have questions regarding your business and having a set of auditors in place with access to a wide array of business knowledge, it will allow you to bounce your questions and concerns off of a group of trusted individuals.
    • A third party to review your controls and activities to ensure they are functioning appropriately, and give advice on how to improve upon them.
      • Sometimes your internal audit department is good, but, not always as stringent as they should be. This will help to serve as a check on their work, as well as your staff. Additionally, if there were any findings noted, your auditors are in a great position to give you some tricks and tips to improve to ensure everything functions well the following period.
    • Improving performance of the organization.
      • Just the knowledge that a review is being performed of an employee s work that can have far reaching consequences for the company as a whole. No more, Oh, I didn t realize that reviewing user access was THAT important to do this month, sorry , now, everyone knows that if it s not done, the success or failure of the organization could rest upon them.

    Think of the SSAE 16 or SSAE-18 audit as an annual investment into your company, increasing potential new clients. productivity and accountability .

    This tip is focused on designing controls that reflect the process being testing, if they don t, a headache of massive proportions will be created once testing begins.
    What do you do to make sure you don t screw this up? Have as many meetings as it takes to get it right.
    What you need to do is sit down with the auditors, the department lead, the main employees responsible for performing the process, and anyone else whom could either play a role in testing or modifying the control in the future. Once that is done, Management should discuss what they determined the control to be and how it should operate, that is then reviewed by the auditors, and then the employees performing the tasks should be reconsulted to verify that the control still reflects their process accurately.
    Many times people try to speed this process up and half-ass it, leaving many open items which upon testing could easily blow up into a huge problem. When the control isn t 100% agreed upon prior to testing and a deviation is noted, it s a tough call between failing the control and the ability to adjust it to accurately reflect the process. The problem is modifying a control after testing has begun is not proper and needs to be avoided at all costs.
    Locking the controls locked down early on could save weeks in wrapping up your new SSAE 16 Report.
    We have seen issues like this cause delays in issuing of the report to the client and running additional fees, since adjusting controls isn t free. Coming from the perspective of the auditor, we can let you know the pitfalls, consequences and how to best navigate the audit process. If you have any comments or questions please leave them below!

    A SOC 1 Report (System and Organization Controls Report ) is a report on Controls at a Service Organization which are relevant to user entities’ internal control over financial reporting. The SOC1 Report is what you would have previously considered to be the standard SAS70, complete with a Type I and Type II reports, but falls under the SSAE 16 guidance (and soon to be SSAE 18 ).

    In addition to the SOC 1 report which is restricted to controls relevant to an audit of a user entity’s financial statements, the SOC 2 and SOC 3 reports have been created to address controls relevant to operations and compliance and will be discussed in further detail in the future.

    SSAE 16 is an enhancement to the current standard for Reporting on Controls at a Service Organization, the SAS70. The changes made to the standard will bring your company, and the rest of the companies in the US, up to date with new international service organization reporting standards, the ISAE 3402. The adjustments made from SAS 70 to SSAE 16 will help you and your counterparts in the US compete on an international level; allowing companies around the world to give you their business with complete confidence .

    SSAE16 is now effective as of June 15, 2011, and if you have not made the necessary adjustments required, now is the time to find a quality provider to discuss the proper steps. All organizations are now required to issue their Service Auditor Reports under the SSAE 16 standards in an SOC 1 Report.

    The soon to be effective, SSAE-18. is expected to follow a similar reporting structure to the SSAE-16 within a SOC 1 report.

    Who Needs an SSAE 16 (SOC 1 ) Audit?

    If your Company (the Service Organization ) performs outsourced services that affect the financial statements of another Company (the User Organization ), you will more than likely be asked to provide an SSAE16 Type II Report, especially if the User Organization is publicly traded.
    Some example industries include:

    • Payroll Processing
    • Loan Servicing
    • Data Center /Co-Location/Network Monitoring Services
    • Software as a Service (SaaS )
    • Medical Claims Processors

    What you Need to Know:

    Before starting the SSAE 16 process, there are a number of considerations one must take into account that can save considerable time, effort, and money in the long run. Use the following items as a mini checklist for yourself:

    • Does my Company need an SSAE16, or, are we doing it just because someone asked?
    • Reports on the low end can run at least $15,000 a year, will the business lost be less of a burden than the cost of the report itself?
    • Does your company have defined Business Process and IT controls in place, or, will you need assistance developing and implementing them (readiness assessment)?
    • Have you determined the controls in place which affect the outsourced services being provided?
    • Have key stakeholders been defined and included in discussions?

    Foreign Medical Program (FMP)

    The Foreign Medical Program (FMP) is a U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) health care benefits program for U.S. Veterans who are residing or traveling abroad and have VA-rated, service-connected disabilities. The eligibility requirements for medical services are different for Veterans outside the United States than for Veterans living within the United States. The Foreign Medical Program assumes payment responsibility for U.S. Veterans only for a VA-rated service-connected disability, or any disability associated with and held to be aggravating a VA-rated, service-connected disability (38 CFR 17.35). (Veterans living in Canada are under the jurisdiction of FMP; however, inquiries and claims must be directed to the Foreign Countries Operations in Canada. See contact information below.) Additionally, VA may authorize necessary foreign medical services for any condition for a Veteran participating in the VA Vocational Rehabilitation Program (38 U.S.C. 31).

    How to Apply for FMP

    Enrolling in FMP is simple. Send your full name, mailing address, address of residence (including country), U.S. Social Security number and VA claim number to:

If you do not have a copy of your rating decision, FMP will request one from your servicing VA Regional Office.

    Although Veterans who are permanently relocating to a country under the FMP Office’s jurisdiction are encouraged to notify the FMP Office upon establishing a permanent, foreign mailing address, service-connected Veterans who are simply traveling abroad need not bother with notification. However, program information is available upon request.

    FMP Registration

    Pre-registration for eligible Veterans is not necessary. However, Veterans who are permanently relocating to a country under the FMP Office’s jurisdiction are encouraged to notify the FMP Office upon establishing a permanent foreign mailing address (address and telephone number). At that time, arrangements will be made for FMP registration and the mailing of detailed program material. Included in the program material will be an FMP Program Guide which provides detailed information on benefit coverage and limitations, how to select health care providers and claim filing instructions.

    This pump works really great. It has more pressure than the one that came in my travel trailer, is MUCH quieter, and I was very happy with it from day one. I use it to pump out of my extra storage tanks into my potable tank, but I am thinking about installing it and using the old one that came with my camper instead since it is lots better than it. It has great water pressure, good flow, and draws less amps than the ShureFlo I have in my trailer. I highly recommend it as a replacement pump or an extra one. It comes with a couple of fittings to make it work in most every application already, but be sure to get some rubber grummits to put under it if you don’t already have them. All in all, it works great.

    I would like to put a small hose on the suction/inlet end and put it into a 5 gallon water jug. This will then be used as needed for a water supply to my primitive cabin to supply water to the sink and “shower”. Will this provide the suction/uptake or is there another pump I would need to get the water from the jug to the pump and then up through the pipes.

    12VDC water pumps like this are either tapped into a pre-existing 12VDC electrical system like used in an RV or can be directly wired to a 12V battery with the proper amperage capability. There are two leads directly attached to the pump with stripped ends to terminate with but also requires a 10amp fuse to be wired in as well.

    Program Overview

    Today’s successful businesses need to base decisions on expert analysis of large volumes of data. The need for successful graduates with a strong analytical background and skills – MBA graduates in particular – has never been higher and is expected to increase over the coming years.

    The Online Certificate in Business Analytics is an intensive online program designed for business professionals and graduate students who want to transform terabytes of data into useful and timely business intelligence. Whether your focus is on marketing, operations, finance, strategy, international business or human resources, you will learn how to use data to make knowledge-driven business decisions.

    This four-course (12 unit) program is taught by San Jose State University College of Business faculty. Each course is delivered over an eight-week period. In order to complete the certificate, you must earn a minimum GPA of 3.0 on the program as a whole. Only three units of “C” and 0 units of less than “C” coursework can be applied toward a certificate. Only three units of an entire program can be repeated (and can be repeated a single time only). If a course is repeated, both grades will be used in the computation of program GPA.

    You can complete the courses asynchronously. Therefore, our program can mesh with any schedule. You can begin the certificate in the fall or spring semester and complete it in less than one calendar year.

    And you can take these courses separately from the certification program, as well.

    The four courses include:

    BUS 235A: Introduction to Business Analytics
    BUS 235B: Business Research
    BUS 235C: Data Mining
    BUS 235D: Business Analytics Simulation

    The number of units applicable to a degree and/or major depending upon matriculation status (with the caveat that the units may not be uniformly applied but require advisor consent) is up to 12 units only after you have been admitted to a graduate program meeting requirements including meeting minimum GMAT score, TOEFL score, etc.

    Admissions Requirements:

    Please note: This program is 100% online and you can complete it from wherever you are located. San Jose State University will not issue an I-20 to secure an F-1 visa to enter the United States for this program.

    Educated Within the United States

    You must have completed a four-year bachelors degree from an accredited college or university in the United States.

    Your GPA should be 3.0 or better (on a 4.0 scale) in the last 60 semester/90 quarter units of study, with an absolute minimum overall GPA of 2.5. There is no conditional admission to the certificate program.

    Educated Outside the United States

    If you earned your degree from a higher education institution outside the United States, you must take an English-language proficiency exam. You must hold the equivalent of a U.S. bachelor’s degree from a recognized institution if you earned your degree outside the United States. SJSU does not accept classes taught in English as a substitute for an English-language proficiency exam.

    The Online Certificate in Business Analytics requires a minimum score of:

    TOEFL (internet-based): 80, or

    Pearson’s Test of English (PTE): 68

    Letters from applicants or institutions will not be accepted.

    SJSU will consider waiving this requirement if you:

    • Earned a bachelors or master’s degree from an accredited U.S. institution
    • Earned a bachelors or master’s degree from an accredited institution for which English is the official and primary language of that country
    • Completed three years of full-time coursework in an accredited U.S. institution

    Prerequisite Course, All Applicants:

    To enroll in the Business Analytics certificate, you must have completed a college-level statistics course with a grade of B (3.0) or better (on a 4.0 scale) at an accredited college or university within five years prior to enrolling in our program.

    If you have not yet met the statistics requirement, we recommend:

    • Local community colleges (for Statistics, please refer our Equivalent Courses page and search for BUS 90 equivalencies)


    • $2,550 per 3-unit course
    • $10,200 total cost

    The above costs do not include books, supplies, etc. Tuition fees are subject to change.

    If you are currently enrolled in SJSU’s MBA program, please register as you normally would through MySJSU.

    If you are not a currently enrolled SJSU student, please follow the pre-enrollment instructions below.

    1. Submit the pre-screening form. as early as possible.
    2. We will evaluate your form and notify you of the results.

    If you are notified that you are eligible, please continue following the Registration Instructions (below).

    *You only need to complete the pre-screening process once, but will be required to submit the registration form prior to each class.

    Registration Instructions:

    Educated within the United States

    Complete and submit the Registration Form (PDF) each term. If you take two classes during the term, you do not need to register for both at the same time. (Please note, you may not take classes through Open University in the Business Analytics program if you have previously been denied admission to an SJSU graduate program.)

    As soon as you register, the tuition fee will be due in 21 days. If you would like to register for the later class at a later time, that is fine. Just submit the form again prior to the next class.

    1. The Lucas Graduate School of Business will screen your form and forward it to the Registrar’s Office.
    2. You will be notified by email when you are officially registered in the course. We will give you your SJSU ID number, as well as the due date for the tuition fee.
    3. Pay the tuition fee, which runs $2,550 per three-unit class. See the Registration Form for payment methods.

    Educated Outside the United States

    If you were educated outside the United States, you must apply for the Business Analytics Certificate through Cal State Apply. Your application to begin classes in the fall semester must be submitted by May 31, and your application to begin classes in the spring semester must be submitted by November 1. After your application is approved, you will receive instructions for registration.

    The liberal state of Illinois is grappling with a full-fledged financial crisis and the only answer is to declare bankruptcy, break up the state and dissolve it into neighboring states, according to the Chicago Tribune.

    Facing billions in unpaid bills and pension obligations, the state is hitting a cash crunch that is rare even by liberal Illinois standards, Gov. Bruce Rauner warning the state has entered banana republic territory.

    We’re like a banana republic ,” Rauner said earlier this month, after the General Assembly failed, for the umpteenth time, to pass a budget package by the regular session deadline. “We can’t manage our money.”

    But the problems are years in the making, caused in large in part by the state’s long-term liberal policies — which led Moody’s Investors Services to downgrade Illinois credit rating to the lowest of any state.

    Illinois is like Venezuela now, a fiscally broken state that has lost its will to live , according to the Chicago Tribune.

    But before we run out of the essentials, let s finally admit that after decade upon decade of taxing and spending and borrowing, Illinois has finally run out of other people s money .

    The best thing to do is to break Illinois into pieces right now. Just wipe us off the map. Cut us out of America s heartland and let neighboring states carve us up and take the best chunks for themselves.

    The group that will scream the loudest is the state s political class, who did this to us, and the big bond creditors, who are whispering talk of bankruptcy and asset forfeiture to save their own skins .

    Since our neighboring states are doing better, taking Illinois jobs and businesses and Illinois workers and taxpaying families, they might as well just take the rest of Illinois, too, dammit.

    Wisconsin can have Chicago and begin calling it South Milwaukee.

    Reports have suggested the state could be the first to attempt to declare Chapter 9 bankruptcy but under the law, that’s impossible unless Congress gets involved.

    U.S. Sens. Dick Durbin and Tammy Duckworth, both Democrats from Illinois, have so far refused requests for comment on whether they would consider getting involved in introducing a measure allowing state bankruptcy.

    Illinois is the fiscal model of what not to do ,” Rep. Peter Roskam, R-Ill. told Fox News, while not commenting on the bankruptcy question. “This avoidance in behavior toward dealing with our challenges is what leads to the devastating impacts we are seeing today.

I’m not a huge fan of the freezer drawer, but I do like the refrigerator on top. The only other thing I don’t like about it so far is that the ice maker is LOUD! I try not to use ice from the ice maker in the evening to avoid triggering it to kick on and make more ice because I don’t want it to wake me up during the night. I live in a small condo so there is no place to get away from the noise and I’m a light sleeper.

    Measurement matters. At some point in the dissertation development process, everyone needs to confront the issue of measurement. We ve found that many if not most students have a fuzzy sense at best of how to define and measure important characteristics of the concepts or phenomena they propose to study. While measurement may be less of an issue in qualitative studies, careful definition and operational measurement of variables and indicators is essential in all quantitative work.

    Likert-type scales are commonly used in surveys and other quantitative work, but it is essential to understand how the underlying constructs are measured with Likert scales, and the assumptions and limitations that accompany use of such a measure.

    Data collection using surveys and/or interviews is ubiquitous in doctoral research, but often these instruments are weakly validated, if at all. Pretests of instruments are helpful, but usually consist of informal review by one or two supposed experts , and lack rigor and credibility. Data is often reported in generalities and, and thematic analysis is frequently vague and insubstantial. Rarely are such instruments subjected to structured analysis and evaluation criteria.

    Use of a validation rubric for surveys and interviews is an excellent strategy to overcome common weaknesses in surveys and interviews. This Survey/Interview Validation Rubric developed by Marilyn Simon and Jacquelyn White is a useful tool in assessing the validity and credibility of an instrument and the data that results.

    Lasers for facial and leg veins

    We use a powerful Nd-YAG laser system for leg veins. This can be used alone or with the IPL . PDL or our other lasers for superficial and small blood vessels, broken capillaries, thread veins and spider veins. Our non-ablative Nd-yag laser is also used for skin tightening and facial rejuvenation.

    The 1064 nm wavelength produced by the Nd-YAG laser is excellent for treatment and clearance of superficial and deep telangiectasias and reticular veins of the legs.

    We can use sclerotherapy or laser treatment depending on your veins, medical history, skin type and preference.

    IPL, PDL, diode and NdYag lasers are used for the treatment of facial veins.

    The medical name for a build up of fluid in the abdomen is ascites (pronounced ay-site-eez).

    The tummy (abdomen) contains many organs, including the stomach, bowels, pancreas, liver, spleen and kidneys.

    There is a sheet of tissue (peritoneum) around these organs. It is made up of 2 layers. One layer lines the wall of the abdomen. The other covers the organs.

    The layers produce a small amount of fluid so that the organs in the abdomen can move smoothly.

    Sometimes fluid builds up between the 2 layers, which makes the abdomen swell. This can be very uncomfortable.

    This fluid build up is called ascites.

    The causes of ascites

    Cancers that can cause ascites include:

    • ovarian cancer
    • breast cancer
    • bowel cancer
    • stomach cancer
    • pancreatic cancer
    • mesothelioma in the peritoneum
    • lung cancer
    • liver cancer
    • womb cancer

    Fluid can build up when:

    • cancer cells irritate the lining of the abdomen and make it produce too much fluid
    • lymph glands in the abdomen get blocked and can’t drain fluid properly
    • cancer has spread to the liver and raises the pressure in nearby blood vessels, which forces fluid out
    • the liver can’t make enough blood proteins so fluid leaks out of veins into the abdominal cavity

    Traffic tickets are intended to be deterrents to traffic violations to ensure safety and order on the road. Yet even when most Americans are licensed drivers, many have occasionally committed mistakes and with the automated cameras on strategic intersections, you just can’t escape not being punished for a wrong turn or for speeding.

    So how do you beat traffic tickets? The first thing to do is to be aware how traffic tickets work, regardless whether your traffic violation is in court or you simply desire to know traffic rules and avoid any violations.

    This is a notice being issued by police officers to motorists or road users who are accused of violating traffic rules.

    In the US, different states, counties and municipalities have codified laws or ordinances and most minor violations are cited as civil infractions. Make it sincere and let him see that this is very important for you. However, when he finally gives you a ticket for your offense, don’t argue. Your argument may be used against you in court.
    • Follow court guidelines. Usually traffic tickets are tried by mail. You can submit a letter claiming your innocence and the police officer will also do the same. Traffic police don’t bother to do the paperwork, so you can win by default. If you lose, however, you can ask for an in-person trial and request for traffic school or pay penalties or fine.
    • Plead your case. As mentioned earlier, plead as “not guilty”. When you do, you will be assigned to a court to continue with the trial. There are instances when the officer may not show up. So again you win because the case may be dismissed.     It’s no secret: Babies poop—a lot! Babies should expel their first poop, called meconium, within 24 hours. From then on, they won’t stop pooping—going through an average of 10 diaper changes per day (and at least 2,000 diaper changes in the first year)! But when it comes to your baby’s poop, you’re probably spending a significant amount of time looking at those dirty diapers (something you never imagined you’d do pre-parenthood, right?) and wondering if what you’re seeing is normal. or not.

    The fact is, poop color, consistency, and odor can all change, depending on what your baby consumes. And although there is a wide range of normal poop types (any poop that is a variation of yellow, brown, and green, with a soft consistency), there are some BMs that may indicate health problems (bloody, black, or white poop, for example).

    Diagnosis Guide for Bipolar Disorder

    Testing for bipolar disorder

    People with bipolar disorder go through intense emotional changes that are very different from their usual mood and behavior. These changes affect their lives on a day-to-day basis.

    Testing for bipolar disorder isn’t as simple as taking a multiple choice test or sending blood to the lab. While bipolar disorder does show distinct symptoms, there is no single test to confirm the condition. Often, a combination of methods is used to make a diagnosis.

    Medical tests

    If you experience extreme shifts in mood that disrupt your daily routine, you should see your doctor. They will perform a physical exam and may also order lab tests, including blood and urine analyses. These tests can help determine if other conditions or factors could be causing your symptoms.

    Sometimes, certain thyroid issues cause symptoms that are similar to those of bipolar disorder. Symptoms may also be a side effect of other medications. After other possible causes are ruled out, your doctor will likely refer you to a mental health specialist.

    Mental health evaluation

    A psychiatrist or psychologist will ask questions to assess your overall mental health. Testing for bipolar disorder involves questions about symptoms, how long they’ve occurred, and how they may disrupt your life. The specialist will also ask you about certain risk factors for bipolar. This includes questions about family medical history and any history of drug abuse.

    Bipolar disorder is a mental health condition that is known for its periods of both mania and depression. The diagnosis for bipolar requires at least one depressive and one manic or hypomanic episode. Your mental health specialist will ask about your thoughts and feelings during and after these episodes. They will want to know if you feel in control during the mania and how long the episodes last. They might ask your permission to ask friends and family about your behavior. Any diagnosis will take into account other aspects of your medical history and medications you have taken.

    To be exact with a diagnosis, doctors use the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM). The DSM provides a technical and detailed description of bipolar disorder. Here’s a breakdown of some of the terms and symptoms used to diagnose the condition.


    The DSM defines mania as a “distinct period of abnormally and persistently elevated, expansive, or irritable mood.” The episode must last at least a week. The mood must have at least three of the following symptoms:

    • high self-esteem
    • little need for sleep
    • increased rate of speech (talking fast)
    • flight of ideas
    • easily distracted
    • an increased interest in goals or activities
    • psychomotor agitation (pacing, hand wringing, etc.)
    • increased pursuit of activities with a high risk of danger


    The DSM states that a major depressive episode must have at least four of the following symptoms. They should be new or suddenly worse, and must last for at least two weeks:

    • changes in appetite or weight, sleep, or psychomotor activity
    • decreased energy
    • feelings of worthlessness or guilt
    • trouble thinking, concentrating, or making decisions
    • thoughts of death or suicidal plans or attempts

    Bipolar I disorder

    Bipolar I disorder involves one or more manic episodes or mixed (mania and depression) episodes and at least one major depressive episode. The episodes are not due to a medical condition or substance use.

    Bipolar II disorder

    Bipolar II disorder has one or more severe major depressive episodes with at least one hypomanic episode. There are no manic or mixed episodes. Hypomania is a lesser form of mania. It doesn’t disrupt your ability to function as much as bipolar I disorder. The symptoms must cause a lot of distress or problems at work, school, or with relationships. It’s common for those with bipolar II disorder to not remember their manic episodes.


    Cyclothymia is characterized by changing low-level depression along with periods of hypomania. The symptoms must be present for at least two years in adults or one year in children before a diagnosis can be made. Adults have symptom-free periods that last no longer than two months. Children and teens have symptom-free periods that last only about a month.

    Rapid-cycling bipolar disorder

    This category is a severe form of bipolar disorder. It occurs when a person has at least four episodes of major depression, mania, hypomania, or mixed states within a year. Rapid cycling affects more women than men.

    Not otherwise specified (NOS)

    This category is for bipolar symptoms that do not clearly fit into other types. NOS is diagnosed when multiple bipolar symptoms are present but not enough to meet the label for any of the other subtypes. This category can also include rapid mood changes that don’t last long enough to be true manic or depressive episodes. Bipolar disorder NOS includes multiple hypomanic episodes without a major depressive episode.


    Bipolar disorder is most often misdiagnosed in its early stages, which is frequently during the teenage years. When it’s diagnosed as something else, symptoms of bipolar disorder can get worse. This usually occurs because the wrong treatment is provided. Other factors of a misdiagnosis are inconsistency in the timeline of episodes and behavior. Most people don’t seek treatment until they experience a depressive episode.

    According to a 2006 study published in Psychiatry. around 69 percent of all cases are misdiagnosed. One-third of those are not being properly diagnosed for 10 years or more.

    Bipolar disorder is often misdiagnosed as unipolar depression, anxiety, OCD, ADHD, an eating disorder, or a personality disorder. The condition shares many of the symptoms associated with other mental disorders. Some things that may help doctors in getting it right are a strong knowledge of family history, fast recurring episodes of depression, and a mood disorder questionnaire.

    Have you ever used Phone Dialer? Maybe you didn t even know that Windows had it. It can be used to dial common numbers or just to avoid the hassle of holding the phone while you dial and wait for someone to answer. If your computer has a phone line hooked up to it you can have your computer dial the number for you, then just pick up your phone and talk.

    Windows 98/ME has it listed under Start /Programs /Accessories /Communications /Phone Dialer. If you don t find this feature on your Win 98, you will need to dig through the closet for your install disk to add the feature. Windows 95 has it under the Accessories submenu.

    You can save your eight most frequently called numbers by clicking one of the Speed Dial buttons and entering a name and telephone number.

    Phone Dialer can also keep a log of all outgoing telephone calls made with the program. To log calls, go to Tools /Show Log to display the Call Log window. Select Log /Options and check the Incoming Calls check box. This will keep track of who you called and when.

    The last twenty dialed numbers are retained on a history list, which can be recalled or edited. About twenty calling card options are built-in, plus more can be created as needed.

    This older version was much more of a novelty than a truly useful application. Any good address book program, like our Personal Phonebook Plus download, has a dialing feature plus you can include addresses, make detailed notes about calls, print labels, etc.

    BUT the Phone Dialer included in Windows XP is more than just the simple speed dial novelty of Win 9x. Not only can it be used for speed-dialing with standard phone lines, but also for voice conferencing and video conferencing over network connections.

    To start Phone Dialer, Go to Start / Run and type dialer (without the quotes). If you want to make a shortcut, search for Dialer.exe it should be in the Windows NT folder.

    The first thing you ll notice is the absence of phone buttons. To make a voice call, all you need is the recipient s phone number, IP address, or DNS (Domain Name System) name. Phone Dialer lets you make calls with a telephone connected to your computer, through a modem, over a network, through a telephone switch connected to your local area network (LAN), or an Internet address.

    With a sound card and microphone you don t even need a telephone. Add a webcam and make video calls or do video conferencing. You can even receive calls while you work on the computer if you have Phone Dialer open.

    I could spend all day talking about its features and how to use it. If you decide to use Phone Dialer in XP, I suggest that you go to Help / Index and read up on how it works for yourself. Some of the features require a bit of skill.

    SharePoint vs. Knowledge Base Software

    Organizations looking to develop a knowledge base will often turn to SharePoint instead of trying a specialized solution. This decision stems from overestimating SharePoint’s capabilities and finding the move to a new solution inconvenient. However, using SharePoint to build a knowledge base is not a good approach.

    First of all, building a knowledge base with SharePoint is difficult. The application was not designed to manage knowledge. And second of all, SharePoint is not an easy platform to use. It can take years to master and often requires the help of developers and designers. In addition, there are inevitable issues that users will run into if they try expanding their kb functionality, migrating to a newer version of SharePoint, and more.

    Building a Knowledge Base with SharePoint is Difficult

    Many organizations needlessly spend resources trying to turn SharePoint into a knowledge base application. It’s a powerful tool, but it can’t do everything.

    Share Point is Collaborative Software

    SharePoint is designed to facilitate teamwork and offers many great tools for doing so. One of which is the ability to set up sites that function as document repositories. This is an invaluable tool for collaboration. A team can share documents with each other, make revisions, and track changes by user.

    An organization might think that a knowledge base is nothing more than document repository and turn to SharePoint. What results is a clutter of document that is difficult to navigate and find information in. And as a result, the knowledge base hardly gets used.

    Document Management vs. Knowledge Management

    A knowledge base is not just a document repository – it’s a body of knowledge that is continuously evolving. Knowledge consists of answers shared by experts, information hidden away in emails, ideas and feedback found in article comments and community forum discussions. A knowledge base application is designed to capture knowledge as it’s created and make it easy to find.

    A knowledge base application equips users with a range of tools for easily capturing knowledge. For example, the email-to-knowledge-base feature automatically converts an email into a kb article. The user just needs to forward the email to the knowledge base software. Or, the kb administrator finds a useful answer in the community forum. The comment can instantly be converted into a support article and stored in the knowledge base.

    What you get with SharePoint

    With each new version, SharePoint’s list of features continues to grow. This gives SharePoint the appearance of a multifunctional platform. However many solutions are left unfinished. Knowledge base is no exception. SharePoint does not provide out of the box kb functionality. Instead, the administrator has to go through a complicated process of building a knowledge base.

    Let’s say an organization is looking to set up a searchable internal knowledge base to store training articles in. With SharePoint, there is no manual for how to build the solution. The organization will have to do all the research. For SharePoint 2010 we’ve found that a common work-around is to use the wiki template and build a navigation system using article metadata. This is a cumbersome solution that is difficult to set up.

    Another obstacle organizations are likely to encounter is the lack of features. We go into more detail about this in the next section. But, the point is that many sought out knowledge base tools are either missing or have to be integrated with the help of a third party. For example, to include an article rating system, tags, comments, or forum functionality, a user will have to spend some time researching third party solutions.

    Going forward with SharePoint, consider whether your kb administrator has the technical skills to put together a site and provide continuous support for a growing knowledge base.

    What is missing in SharePoint?

    Growing the company knowledge base is a delicate process. You don’t want to store every single file in hopes that it might become useful at some point this will turn your knowledge base into an unmanageable dustbin of content. With SharePoint, this scenario is common. While SharePoint allows users to collaboratively work on documents, it doesn’t have an article editor that allows users to quickly create, collaborate on, and categorize support information.

    A powerful article editor is vital to the success of your knowledge base – it enhances the user experience with features like troubleshooting guides, rich media, alerts, forms, and more. An article can be categorized and tagged, to ensure that other users can quickly find it. With SharePoint, a user can build a web page with most of these features, but it’s a long, manual process that requires web development skills. Without a kb article editor, storing and organizing knowledge on the fly becomes impossible.


    A knowledge base application is built to deliver answers. A user looking for a specific answer is not going to look through PDF’s, Word Documents, Excel spreadsheets, and PowerPoint presentations. Instead, he will probably open a support ticket or call the support line. A knowledge base software application offers powerful and customizable search, whereas SharePoint 2010 and earlier versions, do not.

    Look and Feel

    A public facing knowledge base needs to have a branded look and feel. With SharePoint, the kb administrator will discover that modifying the site requires knowledge of Visual Studio and web development skills. Knowledge base applications, on other hand, make customization a breeze. With a variety of themes to choose from and easy template editing, a branded knowledge base can be created in a matter of hours.

    Working with Multiple Sites

    Making custom portals in SharePoint is time consuming. Each site has to be built and managed independently. With SmartSupport, a new portal can be created with a click of button.

    SharePoint is Difficult to Use

    SharePoint is a heavy and complicated tool. It can’t be set up in minutes like a knowledge base software application. Moreover, there is a steep learning curve. If you are hoping that SharePoint will solve your business problem, consider the resources that will have to be spent on training your employees.

    Prepare to dive into online tutorials and SharePoint documentation

    Because SharePoint bundles so many features into one package, the user experience is not intuitive. A user might find that SharePoint works great for document management, but adding page content is frustrating. Or that the calendar works great for managing deadlines, but navigating the ribbon in the application is too complicated.

    The time it takes to master the tool is definitely a challenge. In fact, there is so much technical knowledge required to run SharePoint that an industry of “SharePoint Professionals” has emerged – certified architects and engineers who know how to properly install, configure, and maintain SharePoint. Be prepared to become a developer and/or seek professional help.

    Few SharePoint users get to experience the advantage of the cloud

    The new SharePoint 2013 works with Office 365. This allows the application to run in the cloud – Microsoft’s own data centers. But, few organizations have made the switch to the new version of SharePoint, mainly because migration is a long and costly process. Most still use the 2003, 2007, or 2010 on-premise editions of SharePoint Server.

    SharePoint sets a rather high bar for migration. Native tools for on-premises SharePoint migration are unreliable because they leave behind essential information, like metadata, permissions and workflows. And there are plenty of other issues. For example, you cannot migrate to SharePoint 2013 unless you are already using SharePoint 2010. As a result, not many organizations have experienced the power of cloud.

    Cloud software, or as it’s more commonly referred to Software to as a Service (SaaS), has recently gained a competitive edge over on-premise software (link to SaaS article).

    A 2013 Gartner survey of more than 2,000 CIO’s looked at top business priorities. Ranking third on the list was cloud computing (SaaS). The same study showed that transitioning to the cloud freed up to 50% of infrastructure and operational resources. SaaS knowledge base applications scale easily, see more frequent updates, have shorter deployment times, and don’t require the help of IT. In addition, you’re not buying a piece of software but a dedicated group of industry specialists who help you realize your goals.

    A knowledge base application is a specialized solution designed to help you build and maintain a powerful knowledge base. It is architected with the non-technical business user in mind and makes it easy to capture and create knowledge.     Holly Patterson, who lived in the San Francisco suburb of Livermore, visited a Planned Parenthood clinic Sept. 10 to take the pill. She followed the prescribed procedure for using RU-486, taking two more pills at home in the following days.

    After experiencing bleeding and cramps so severe that she was unable to walk, her boyfriend rushed her to the hospital, where she was given painkillers and sent home. She was back in the hospital a few days later and died Sept. 17.

    Monty Patterson said he learned from an attending physician at the hospital that she had died after a massive infection caused by fragments of the fetus left inside her uterus caused her to go into septic shock.

    I ve been using Pivot Tables in Excel for twenty years or more. They are one of the features that have made Excel such a killer program. Pivot Tables are easy to use after a bit of learning, and they re fast and flexible. And the Pivot Table default settings used to be alright.

    A few Excel versions ago, I believe in Excel 2007, Microsoft added some additional layouts to Pivot Tables, so in addition to the historic Tabular layout, you can now choose Compact or Outline. The problem is that they made Compact the default, and except for the simplest Pivot Tables, I never want to use Compact, I always want the Tabular layout. So right after I build a Pivot Table, I need to fix it. (This may have been Yet Another Reason to hate Excel 2007.)

    There are a few other default settings that I need to correct these as well, though they were never as annoying as the Compact layout.

    Let me illustrate the problem. I have a simple Table with the headings Greek (containing Alpha , Beta , or Gamma ), Latin (containing A , B , or C ), Arabic (containing (1, 2, 3, or 4), and Values (containing a random two-decimal-digit number between 3 and 8). When I insert a Pivot Table with Greek in the columns area, Latin and Arabic in the rows area, and Values in the values area, here is the out-of-the-box default Pivot Table.

    What s wrong with this Pivot Table?

    1. It s in compact layout, which means all of the row pivot fields are compressed into one column, with field items indented according to their order in the rows area. The field names are not shown at the top of the field; instead there is a single label called Row Labels.
    2. There are subtotals, and I usually do not want subtotals.
    3. There are grand totals on rows and columns, and I usually want no subtotals at all, and if I do want subtotals, I usually only want column totals, or sometimes only row totals.
    4. The columns have all been autofitted, so the first two columns are very wide, and all columns have different widths. When the Pivot Table is refreshed, these widths are subject to change due to the autofitting.

    So I have to go to the Pivot Table ribbon tab and fix the first three problems, and to Pivot Table Options to fix the column autofitting. Yeah, big deal, it s only 30 seconds, but it s 30 seconds each, and it s easy to forget to fix them all, and anyway, it s a pain.

    For all those years I was merely annoyed about Excel s Pivot Table default settings, Bill Mr Excel Jelen went further, and lobbied with every Excel user and every Microsoft Excel product team member to change them. For years this had no effect, other than he became well known within the Excel product group.

    But then Microsoft introduced User Voice, an online forum that lets users suggest new features and improvements to existing features, and vote on other suggestions. Microsoft reads all of the suggestions, and those suggestions with the most votes are considered for inclusion in their product.

    Two weeks ago, the official Excel Team blog contained an article entitled PivotTables just got personal. Long story short, they ve implemented Bill s suggestion, and in a very flexible way. Instead of simply changing the Pivot Table default layout back to Tabular, they allow users to set all Pivot Table options to create a custom Pivot Table default. This feature is available to all Excel 2016 users with Office 365, as long as they have gotten the recent updates.

    Here s how to change your Pivot Table default settings. On Excel s File tab, select Excel Options, and click on Data in the Excel Options dialog.

    Click the Edit Default Layout button to open the Edit Default Layout button.

    Layout Import uses the settings of an existing Pivot Table as the new custom default layout (I happened to have cell S21 selected when I opened the dialog; this cell was not in any Pivot Table). You can start with that, or simply make any changes in the dialog. You can see that I ve already fixed them all.

    You can even click the Pivot Table Options button to access any settings in the entire Pivot Table Options dialog, like that pesky Autofit Column Widths setting.
