Typical response rates

Like many researchers, you’re probably wondering:

“What’s a typical response rate for a customer survey?”
“What rate can I get if I use the Web?”
“Only 50 people answered my survey is that normal?”

Looking at a table of “typical” response rates is somewhat like reading a BMI table it provides a frame of reference, but doesn’t actually make a difference. This is particularly true of surveys, where typical can cover substantial ground:

  • Employees: 60-90%
  • Customers and members: 5-40%
  • General public: 1-20%

Surveys are a balancing act of data quality, respondent ease, time, and money. The response rate is no different to make things wonderful for the respondent, you may have to reduce the number of questions you ask or blow your budget. The Web is not inherently better than paper or telephone or vice-versa, it’s just a matter of finding the best matches to your respondents and executing that method well.

So if typical doesn’t matter, what does?

Just this: whether the data is serving your decision-making needs. Depending on your organization, you may require a statistically reliable sample. or simply enough people you feel comfortable moving ahead. Remember, the goal is not to get a lot of people to answer but to get a representative group of respondents. You want the middle ground along with the people who are ticked off or those willing to stand on their head for a sweepstakes.

When respondents decide whether to take (or finish) your survey, they’re asking themselves two questions:

“What’s in it for me?”
“How much work is it?”

There’s a pretty clear indicator when the effort is greater than than their interest you’ll see respondents abandon the survey .

Increasing their self-interest

There are several factors which will make people more willing to spend time on your survey. When respondents are really involved, it’s even possible to get a good response rate on a 40 minute survey.

  • Ongoing relationships, such as employees, repeat customers, and members, especially if they’re used to hearing from you through newsletters or other channels
  • Heightened emotion sometimes delight, often irritation
  • Trust that you’ll actually do something with the answers
  • Curiosity about the survey results/what other people think
  • Direct rewards or drawings
  • Survey makes sense they understand why you want their opinion
  • Anonymous when possible, and trust with their contact information when it’s not

Minimizing effort

An astonishing number of surveys ask respondents to jump through hoops. While some hoops (like length) are research trade-offs, many surveys can simply benefit from a dose of usability.

  • Right medium, such as Web for office staff but paper or kiosks for factory employees
  • Inviting them at a time that’s convenient, and/or with advance notice
  • Short as possible, with accurate time estimates and progress indicators
  • Easy password log-in (if any) to start the survey
  • Option to pause the survey and return later (though sometimes forcing a single session gets more completions)
  • Conventional questions and scales, with minimal filler words
  • Few or no required responses or formats
  • Good error messages for when they make a mistake
  • Technology (such as JavaScript) which enhances a survey, but doesn’t become a barricade if respondents don’t have it enabled
  • Clean layouts with a readable font size

New car sales slumped during the 2008 and 2009 recession years as U.S. drivers squeezed as much mileage out of their old cars as possible.

By holding onto their used cars, consumers threw off a very delicate balance and decimated used car supplies. According to Manheim Consulting ‘s Used Vehicle Value Index. used car prices actually fell 0.8% last year, but jolted up 1.2% in December as Superstorm Sandy reduced an already small supply. Dwindling new car inventory and used car lots already emptied of 2- and 3-year-old vehicles are keeping prices high as sales rose 5% in 2012 and more than 10% from 2010.

You must read the fine print on your car warranties.

John Pallay of Mansfield, Ohio, found out the hard way that automobile extended warranties can be a raw deal. Pallay recently wrote to Kiplinger’s to relate his tale of warranty woe: When he bought a used 2002 Pontiac Sunfire nearly three years ago, he also bought a $2,000 extended warranty from National Auto Care (now called NAC). Since then, Pallay writes, he has shelled out $1,400 for repairs — and his policy has paid just $30. Some parts that needed replacement were excluded from coverage. Other repairs weren’t covered because the breakdown was caused by a noncovered part.

Hit and miss. Extended warranties consistently inhabit top-ten lists of consumer complaints for a good reason: They often make it difficult to cash in. The language may, for example, obfuscate what is covered and what isn’t so that you end up footing the bill instead of the company backing the contract. The fine print may include a per-item deductible instead of a per-visit one, meaning you could rack up several deductibles in one trip to the shop. Diagnostic fees may not be covered if the part that’s found to be causing the problem isn’t covered. The reimbursed labor rate may be less than what your shop charges. And the warranty may be subject to termination if you don’t follow its maintenance schedule.


Some high-profile warranty companies have gone bankrupt, leaving customers in the lurch. And some 40 state attorneys general have investigated a massive phone and direct-marketing campaign that was waged last year. The companies involved sent out mailings that appeared to be from a car dealer or manufacturer to sell often-worthless warranties.

If those caveats don’t scare you off, the high cost of extended warranties may. According to F it’s better if the dealership is paid directly. Finally, haggle for a lower price. The Consumer Reports survey found that 75% of people who negotiated won a discount.

If you do sign but develop buyer’s remorse, don’t throw up your hands. In most states, you have the right to cancel within 30 days of signing a contract if you haven’t used the policy.

Auto Express investigation: used car dealers are hiding the history of ex-rental cars in a practice slammed by Trading Standards

Car dealers are keeping quiet about the ex-rental history of their used cars, despite legislation banning that very sales practice.

An investigation by Auto Express has revealed that most car manufacturers do not insist their dealers pass this information on to potential buyers, while Britain’s largest dealer network has argued that it would only supply the information “if asked”.

Under Consumer Protection from Unfair Trading Regulations (CPUTR) 2008, it’s illegal to withhold any details that could affect a purchase decision about a car at the point of sale. Advertising a car as having one previous owner, which later transpires to

be a rental company, is a prime example of this practice, according to Office of Fair Trading guidelines for the regulations.

This kind of misleading omission could land a dealer in court, facing hefty fines or even jail. But when Auto Express quizzed all the major car manufacturers about this sales method, 83 per cent said they did not insist their dealers specifically flag up ex-fleet, ex-rental or ex-driving-school vehicles to potential customers.

Audi UK even argued dealers were “not legally obliged to do so,” in response to an Auto Express investigation into one reader’s complaint about this practice (see the case study below).

Many argued that the information was already listed on the logbook – even though the car’s usage may not be obvious and customers might not even see the V5C form until collecting it – while others said dealers would only supply the information if asked.

Manufacturers also unanimously argued that the quality checks needed for a car to be granted approved used status meant that an ex-rental history was irrelevant.

Dealer group Pendragon, which sells 100,000 cars each year through its Evans Halshaw brand alone, agreed. Its spokeswoman said: “Revealing that a car is ex-rental or fleet could be misleading and might put people off.”

Trading Standards says rule-breaking is rife in the used-car sector, with complaints from car buyers making up almost 75 per cent of calls received by Citizens Advice each year. However, Trading Standards’ motor trade expert Gerry Taylor admitted: “Severe cutbacks mean we simply don’t have the manpower to enforce these regulations.”

A car with just one previous owner is every used buyer’s dream. But what if that owner turns out to be a rental company? You’d probably feel misled.

That’s certainly how reader Leigh Caller of Yeovil, Somerset, felt after buying his approved used Audi A1 Sportback. Leigh said: “Three weeks after buying it, I received the V5C and was shocked to discover the previous owner was Hertz UK Ltd. I wouldn’t

have bought the car had I known it was anything other than a one-owner vehicle.”

When he complained, Leigh says Yeovil Audi argued he should have asked more questions at the point of sale – but the law says he didn’t have to. If a dealer fails to divulge information at the point of sale that could affect your purchase decision, it’s committed an offence under the Consumer Protection Act from Unfair Trading Regulations 2008, and could be prosecuted.

Yeovil Audi agreed to give Leigh £500 as a goodwill gesture, but he was asked to sign a disclaimer stating the money was not an admission of guilt from the dealer .

We contacted Audi and were told the dealer had not broken any laws. Its spokesman told us it was sorry Leigh felt misled, but ad ded: “We do not require our sales staff to specifically draw

attention to ex-rental stock, and they are not legally obliged to do so.”

We disagree, and reported the case to Trading Standards. Its lead officer for the motor trade, Gerry Taylor, confirmed: “The dealer is legally obliged to draw attention to ex-rentals. Failure to do so could mean prosecution.”
