Is an 84 Month Auto Loan Right for You?

In order to boost vehicle sales, automaker financing branches such as Ford Motor Credit, Toyota Motor Credit, GMAC, as well as many local lenders and dealers, have been offering 84 month auto loans.

84-Month-Auto-Loans.com has partnered with one of the most comprehensive national networks of automotive lenders and dealer financiers in the industry to find you the loan you need.  If you re ready to apply for one of these 84 month auto loans, just submit your credit application via our secure online system.  Our advanced matching system will place your application with the most suitable lender given your unique credit profile, income, location, and vehicle financing needs.

    84 Month Financing:  Advantages

Lower Monthly Payments: because you have a period of 7 years to pay off your vehicle, the payment each month will be lower than a 72 or 60 month auto loan.

More Car for The Same Payment: if you can afford a flat car payment of $400/month, for instance, this would equate to a $24,000 vehicle with a 60 month loan, but a $33,600 vehicle with 84 month financing.

    84 Month Financing:  Disadvantages

Depreciation: most new vehicles depreciate to about half their value in the first three years, and most car buyers trade-in within 3-4 years.  That far into a 60 month loan, the vehicle is often worth the same amount as the remaining loan balance.  But 3-4 years into an 84 month auto loan, you will still owe more than the car is worth.  The result can be negative equity, also known as going upside down on your car loan.

Higher Interest: because you ll be paying interest for 7 years instead of the more typical 5.5-6 years, you ll end paying a higher finance charge in the long run, effectively increase the total amount you pay for your vehicle.  Additionally, some lenders will charge a higher interest rate for an 84 month car loan than they would for a 60 or 72 month loan.

For an 84 Month Car Loan, it s Best if

You re the kind of owner who likes to drive the same vehicle for at least 5-5.5 years this is how long it will take you to break even on the note if you want to trade in your car, truck, or SUV for something else.  If you get the itch to trade-in every 27-33 months, an 84 month car loan is not your best option.

You re sure the vehicle you want will offer everything you need in terms of size, style, luxury, and amenities for the next few years. Remember this if you want a two-seat sports car but see a baby on the horizon, etc.

The monthly payments are relatively easy on your budget, and your financial situation is well-established. A lot can happen in 7 years with the economy, jobs, fuel prices, and other factors. Don t lock yourself into a long-term loan that strains your budget.

You are quite comfortable with the monthly payment, the vehicle is just what you want, and you see yourself driving it for a long time to come.

The Most Popular Online Salvage Car Auctions: Bid on a Car Today

An online salvage car auction can be a great way of securing hard to find parts for a car restoration project. When an owner has a totaled car, he’ll often sell or give it to a salvage lot. People looking to buy totaled car parts can inspect the vehicle for any components that may still be viable and ready to sell. An increasing number of these parts are available through online auctions.

Copart USA is one of the best sources for salvage car parts available online. This auction site allows you to search by car make, model, year, part and a number of other factors. Additionally, the wide range of selection that Copart USA offers makes it a great place to find both competitive prices and otherwise hard to find items.

Gov Auctions is a website that sells cars that were previously used and which have been repossessed or claimed by the government. In some cases, these cars are salvage quality and will sell for quite a bit less money than standard cars would. This site has a great selection, but you may have to do some sifting through your options in order to find the salvage car parts that you’re looking for.

Auctions Pass is a third website that provides a great selection of different salvage cars and salvage car parts for your use. With the help of Auctions Pass, you can search through a wide range of locations and sellers to find the best parts and pieces for your needs.

    Interest Rate Definition #streetside #auto

    #auto interest rates

    Interest Rate

    DEFINITION of ‘Interest Rate’

    Loading the player.

    BREAKING DOWN ‘Interest Rate’

Interest is charged by lenders as compensation for the loss of the asset’s use. In the case of lending money, the lender could have invested the funds instead of lending them out. With lending a large asset, the lender may have been able to generate income from the asset should they have decided to use it themselves.

    Simple Interest = P (principal ) x I (annual interest rate) x N (years)

    Borrowing $1,000 at a 6% annual interest rate for 8 months means that you would owe $40 in interest (1000 x 6% x 8/12).

    Compound Interest = P (principal) x [ ( 1 + I(interest rate) N (months) ) – 1 ]

Borrowing $1,000 at a 6% annual interest rate for 8 months means that you would owe $40.70.

The interest owed when compounding is taken into consideration is higher, because interest has been charged monthly on the principal + accrued interest from the previous months. For shorter time frames, the calculation of interest will be similar for both methods. As the lending time increases, though, the disparity between the two types of interest calculations grows.

Is It Possible to Refinance a Car Loan with Bad Credit? #used #cars #under #3000

#refinance auto loan with bad credit

Is It Possible to Refinance a Car Loan with Bad Credit?

If you are worried about how you will refinance car loan bad credit. you should be pleased to know you have options. Most lenders will work with people with bad credit when it comes to refinancing because they understand the bad credit may be coming from the loan in question. an adjustment of that loan will improve a normally trustworthy person s credit. This thought process can be your benefit when you consider auto refinance.

What Refinancing Will Do for You

If you had to get a bad credit car loan to begin with, the interest rates and terms were probably extremely high. When you find someone to refinance your loan, you will discover that you might be able to decrease the loan term or the interest rate to make handling the loan easier. This will help you make the payment son time and improve your credit as a whole.

    Getting Refinanced with Bad Credit

Call the lender and find out what the loan balance is. After you have done that, you should figure out what your car is worth. This is very important because with bad credit you need to have a vehicle that is worth more than what you owe on it. Kelley Blue Book is a good resource for this.

Make sure that all of your payment history has been good, that there have been no late payments or other issues. If there are problems like this, you will need to explain the cause of the issues to the lenders. Although some lenders have no problems refinancing those with bad credit, they do not look kindly upon those who have missed or late payments.

If your credit is bad it is smart to stay away from prime lenders. These places will usually only work with people who have excellent credit. Do some research and look into going with sub-prime or high-risk lenders. These professionals specialize in dealing with bad credit refinancing. More times than not they also have available to them several different kinds of loans.

IRS Guidance Explains Rules for Vehicle Donations #auto #lease

    #auto donation

IRS Guidance Explains Rules for Vehicle Donations

Notice 2006-1 provides guidance on reporting obligations to donee organizations that receive contributions of qualified vehicles. It instructs the donee on how, where, and when to report to the IRS the information contained in the contemporaneous written acknowledgment that the donee provides to the donor. It supplements the interim guidance issued in Notice 2005-44. discussed below. Notice 2006-1 also notes that Form 1098-C will be revised to elicit the additional information required to be included in a contemporaneous written acknowledgment as a result of technical amendments contained in the Gulf Opportunity Zone Act of 2005. These revisions have since been made.

In Notice 2005-44, the IRS and Treasury explain rules adopted in the American Jobs Creation Act of 2004, which (1) generally limits the deduction to the actual sales prices of the vehicle when sold by the donee charity, and (2) requires donors to get a timely acknowledgment from the charity to claim the deduction.

Donors may claim a deduction of the vehicle’s fair market value under the following circumstances:

The charity makes a significant intervening use of the vehicle, such as using it to deliver meals on wheels.

The charity makes a material improvement to the vehicle, i.e. major repairs that significantly increase its value and not mere painting or cleaning.

The charity donates or sells the vehicle to a needy individual at a significantly below-market price, if the transfer furthers the charitable purpose of helping a poor person in need of a means of transportation.

The Service has revised Form 1098-C. which is used to provide the written acknowledgment. Finally, Notice 2006-1 provides guidance on the new penalties imposed on donee organizations that provide a false or fraudulent acknowledgment of a vehicle donation, or fail to furnish the acknowledgment properly.

There can be few gadgets better able to keep passengers entertained during a stressful car journey than an in-car DVD player. Some products even have multiple outputs so the kids and granny can each have their own screen each. There was a time when products like these were only for the rich and famous. These days they are far more affordable, especially if you buy one from Chinavasion.

    Know Your Car DVD Terminology

    • 1 DIN/2 DIN

DIN refers to an international standard size for car audio, DIN 75490, which was developed by the German standards body Deutsches Institut für Normung. The standard DIN refers to the size of the panel, and was adopted internationally in 1984. Car DVD players fitted in the car’s panel, will usually be either 1 DIN (180mm x 50mm) or 2 DIN (180mm x 100mm). No international standard has been adopted for the depth of a car’s DVD or CD player/radio.

  • Region-free DVD

As far as DVD players go, the world is divided into six regions. The USA and Canada are Region 1. Countries in Europe are part of Region 2, and so on. Most DVD players sold in one country or region will only play in that region. For example, you cannot play a Region 6 DVD, made for the Chinese market, on a Region 1 American DVD player. However, in a spirit of global peace and harmony, Chinavasion’s region-free DVD players let you play DVDs from any country or region.

The Android operating system (OS) was developed specifically for mobile devices by Google. It is a hugely popular mobile platform, giving you access to more than 600,000 apps and games from Android Market. Many technology commentators argue that the Android OS is superior to Apple’s iOS.

GPS stands for Global Positioning System. It is a navigation system that uses a network of 24 satellites orbiting the planet to provide location and time information anywhere on earth. The system sends signals to and from the satellites to your GPS device and uses this information to calculate your position. The software in your GPS receiver can take this information and combine it with map data to display your position. The technology also enables you to plan routes, find out about nearby locations and approximate your speed and journey time.

Bluetooth technology enables you to transfer information over short distances without the need for a wire. A Bluetooth chip can be fitted in a computer, mobile phone or digital camera and used to transmit file data, such as music, photos or documents, to another Bluetooth enabled device without having to use a cable. The same technology makes it possible to link mobile phones with hands-free headsets, and is a vital part of connecting controllers and peripheral devices to computers, tablets and games consoles.

Setting up Bluetooth on your car DVD is simplicity itself. Simply switch on your Bluetooth enabled phone and bring up the Bluetooth menu. Click the button that says “enable” or “activate” Bluetooth and your phone will search for devices. It should recognise the car DVD player and come back with the name of the Chinavasion product, along with a string of numbers. Click connect to initiate the pairing process. Your car’s DVD player and mobile phone are now paired, enabling you to make use of Bluetooth functions such as streaming audio from your phone.

  • Tech Salesman On The Road

You’re half way down the motorway to a business presentation when you suddenly realise that you’ve left your laptop back at the office. Disaster! Well it would be, if you didn’t have the “Road Terminator” Android car DVD player fitted (CVJY-C139). You simply contact your office using the Wi-Fi and 3G enabled Terminator and ask them to email you the presentation you’ve been up all night perfecting. Relaxed again, you use the Terminator’s GPS to plan your route, entertaining yourself on the way with high-energy music to get you in the mood. Once you reach your destination you remove the detachable Android tablet and use it to make your presentation. The customer is impressed by your calm manner and slick delivery, and you leave with a 5-year contract. What other car DVD can do all this for you?

    Know Your Car DVD Kit

Some of the best known branded car DVDs are manufactured by Bush, JVC Panasonic, Philips, Sony and Toshiba. Less well known makes include Alba, Audiovox, Clarion, Grundig, In Phase, Kenwood and Roadview. All the manufacturers offer very similar specifications and feature sets, including touch screens, connectivity to USB and smartphones, as well as Bluetooth and digital and analog TV receivers.

You can read product reviews in blogs such as Engadget and Gizmodo, or check out websites such as Techmoan for unbiased reviews. In print, you could try Which? or Auto Express, or read customer reviews on Amazon and elsewhere for first-hand testimonials.

You can buy a wide range of car DVDs through Amazon or from any number of vehicle accessory outlets. Chinavasion own selection of non-branded car DVDs rival the big names in features and quality, but cost a fraction of the price. In fact, because we are not tied to any one manufacturer, many of our products offer an even wider feature set, but at low prices.

As with many electronic gadgets, engineers and designers are working hard to increase build quality. There is also a continued drive to create products that can perform multiple functions, cutting down on the total of number of gadgets you need. So look out for car DVDs with built in parking radars, or products with digital video recorders (DVR), black box technology and radar detection to keep you safe and secure, as well as entertained.

    Road Carnival

The “Road Carnival” car DVD Player CVIR-C149) is equipped with a host of multimedia features to keep you entertained, as well as GPS to lead you to your destination. Best of all, the “Road Carnival” has on-board diagnostics (OBDII) that monitor your car’s performance and can detect problems and display vital information while you are on the road. Once fitted the OBDII can warn you in advance of any problems with your car and will turn on the “check engine” or “service engine soon” indicator should it detect a problem, so that you can get to a garage before your car breaks down.

  • Does Telematics Technology Mean Cheap Car Insurance?
Telematics car insurance policies offer personalised insurance cover based on exactly when and how you drive. Telematics car insurance is becoming increasingly popular, and specialist policies are now appearing on insurance comparison websites. Car insurance premiums have been on the increase for several years now, and most experts predict that the cost of insuring your car will remain high. The increased cost of injury claims resulting from car accidents is just one of the factors that have pushed premiums to new levels.
  • Three Great Ways to Save on Car Insurance Quotes in Texas
While car insurance quotes in Texas are not entirely based upon this factor, taking action to lower your property loss risk will improve your liability profile in a big way.
  • Ways To Easily Get Cheap Car Insurance For Sports Cars
So if you are looking for cheap car insurance, you’ll have to dig deeper. Search for providers who are willing to insure your expensive car without charging you extortionate rates. There are circumstances under which your car insurance rates will be lower. If your sports car has safety-enhancing features like car alarms, steering wheel locks and detachable music systems, you may be eligible for discounted rates.
  • How to get the best deal on a new car?
Before you step foot on the lot of a car dealership, spend time researching the value, reliability and resale value of cars that might interest you. Kelley Blue Book, Edmunds and NADA will all give detailed pricing guides based on the model, color, options and region, which will give you a good idea of how much you could expect to pay for a certain car.
  • Future Cars – The Most Anticipated Upcoming Car Models
The immediate future holds a wealth of automotive masterpieces with many unique models about to enter showrooms from the automobile industry’s biggest names. The compact crossover segment is flourishing globally and automakers are scurrying to grab a share of this burgeoning segment. One of the most unique designs is the Ecosport from Ford. It’s rather compact dimensions and off road intentions will make it a worthy and capable all rounder. Ford has really got the ball rolling, and the Ecosport is just one of many new models slated for launch. • Selling Used Cars for a Profit
Find a steady supply of inexpensive automobiles, like a local auction house or swap meet. Become a car dealer. Authorized car dealers are invited to auctions and liquidation sales not open to the public. A dealer might give you a good deal on a auto loan with a low interest rate, but ask about the specifics. Ask your bank for a quote, and other banks as well. The best deal is the lowest interest rate you can find for the shortest loan period, and not one that will shoot up after a few months.
  • How to get the best deal on a used car?

  • What are the Top 5 Compact Cars?

The Honda Civic is an obvious contender in the small car market for many reasons. Another great option in the affordable small car sector is the Mazda 3. The completely made-over 2011 Hyundai Elantra is sheer evidence of the company’s extreme improvements as of recently. Chevy’s 2011 Cruze compact is yet another great option for car buyers. If you’re looking for a bit more European style in your small car, look no further than the 2011 Volkswagen Jetta.
  • The Designation of a Car as Category D

The designation of a car as Category D can lower a car’s value for arbitrary reasons. A Cat D designation is an insurance company opinion that a car was not economical to repair, using the services of an expensive dealer body shop. Cat D punishes a vehicle’s value based on an insurance company’s arbitrary decision that the repair cost is too high.

Information on Using a VA Loan with Bad to Poor Credit #auto #carriers

#refinance auto loan with bad credit

    VA Loans with Bad Credit

Can I still get a VA Loan with bad credit?

The VA does not have a minimum credit requirement. It simply requires that borrowers represent a satisfactory credit risk. But ultimately VA lenders issue the loans, and in the current economic climate these lenders are looking for solid credit scores. It’s up to them to determine whether or not your credit score meets the benchmark they set. If you find that your credit score falls short, there is still hope. There are a number of ways you can raise your credit score to meet a lender’s benchmark and receive the loan you deserve.

What if my spouse has bad credit?

First, remember that the only acceptable co-borrower on a loan is a spouse or another veteran. It’s important to note that if there is a co-borrower, such as your spouse on the loan, both parties on the mortgage will have to meet both VA and lender requirements.

For example, most married couples pursue a VA home loan together, with each obliged on the mortgage note. There are many different reasons why, but usually a husband or wife may not have enough income to purchase the home of their dreams on his or her own. Adding in that second income of a spouse can sometimes do wonders for your purchasing power and debt-to-income ratio. In the current state of the economy, lenders are often looking for a score of at least 620 from both parties involved.

You can approach this problem from a couple of different directions. The first is to see if you can get preapproved for the desired loan amount without your spouse’s income. Sometimes it can be a simple fix, but not all prospective borrowers will be so lucky. For other co-borrowers, combating the credit issue headfirst may be the best route to take.

We’re here to help raise your credit score

We have experts available who can help you boost your credit, but the process starts with you. Many times, a number of different factors collectively contribute to lower a credit score. Raising your score means fixing these issues. Some issues found in your credit report can be fixed quickly, while others may take some time. Either way, boosting your credit score requires sincere commitment and determination on your part. When you’re ready, your hard work and dedication will pay off.

This is where we come in. We have a dedicated team of professionals who help prospective borrowers who haven’t quite cleared the credit hurdle. Our Department of Secondary Approval is full of experts that work one-on-one with veterans and active military by providing simple, concrete steps to boosting their financial health. It is an absolutely free service that we offer for veterans and active service members alike.

All you have to do is take the first step. Fill out our no-obligation form below to speak with a VA Loan expert.

How to Get the Best Insurance Rates #eastwood #auto

    #best auto insurance rates

How to Get the Best Insurance Rates

In tough economic times, it’s important to get the best insurance rates possible. Auto insurance and, if you own a house, homeowner’s insurance are mandatory, so it makes sense to spend as little as possible for the broadest amount of coverage. Instead of going with the first quote you receive, do some research and shop around to get the best rates for all your policies.

    Other People Are Reading

Maintain good credit. Insurance companies take your FICO score and credit history into consideration when rating policies. They have found that individuals with poor credit tend to file more claims than their good-credit counterparts. Insurance rates for individuals with a poor credit history are higher. If you’re looking to get the best rate, be mindful of your credit score.

Use one carrier. One of the best ways to get a good rate is to purchase various types of insurance from a single insurance company. Doing so can make you eligible for what is called the multi-line discount. For example, placing your automobile and homeowner’s insurance policy with the same carrier will get you a better rate than if you used two separate companies.

Visit your state’s insurance department online. It will list insurance companies licensed in your state and their areas of expertise. If you are looking to insure a home that is near a flood zone, the insurance department will list companies willing to cover such a risk. Finding a company that specializes in certain types of risk improves your chances of getting the best rate available.

Stay loyal to your insurance company. Companies reward their policyholders for sticking with them. Some companies give their policyholders a 3 to 5 percent discount for remaining with them for three to five years, and a higher discount for six years or more.

Talk to an insurance agent. It’s easy to get insurance quotes online, but an insurance agent can tell you about the underwriting process and rating criteria. You can also find out about discounts you would not otherwise know about. For example, some insurance companies offer discounts for retired individuals. Also, not all discounts are accessible via an online quoting system.

How to Sell Your Used Car Like a Pro #auto #shippers

    #how to sell a car

How to Sell Your Used Car Like a Pro

Over half of all used cars sold each year are purchased by private parties.

There’s huge demand for good used cars, so if you have a well maintained, late model vehicle and you’re thinking about trading in, you should seriously consider selling it to a private party – you could end up saving thousands of dollars.

Here’s how to sell your used car like a pro and get the highest price for it.

Step 1: Find out How Much It’s Worth

The first thing to do is get a good feel for how much your car is worth. You can start by checking the pricing guides, but as we’ve pointed out before, you can’t rely on them for anything other than a ball-park value.

What you need to do is check out car classifieds sites such as Craigslist (look under cars+trucks by owner), Cars.com. and AutoTrader.com (Make sure you select listings by owner).

Find a few cars in your area similar to yours, call up the owner and ask them the following questions:

    1. What condition is the vehicle in?
    2. What additional options does it include?
    3. Has it ever been in an accident?
    4. Has it been smoked in?
    5. Do you have full maintenance records?
    6. Are you the original owner?

Next, offer them 20% to 25% below their asking price to see if they’re willing to sell at that price.

Go back and forth until you get a number they’ll agree to, at which point you’ll have a realistic number you can compare with.

Next, check out the listings from dealers and find cars \ similar to yours in miles and trim style. You can figure a realistic selling price will be 10% to 20% below their asking price.

This gives you a good idea of what your car will sell at retail. The ideal strategy is to price your car somewhere between the private party prices and the retail prices. Check out our article, How to Set the Asking Price for Your Used Car for further tips.

Step 2: List Your Car For Sale

Now that you have a good idea of what your car is worth, you’re ready to start marketing – but don’t worry, this part is easy. (Make sure you read our article: How to Place an Effective Classified Ad ).

We recommend you post a free ad on Craigslist and a paid ad on one of the listing sites such as Cars.com or AutoTrader.com.

If it’s applicable, the main things you want to emphasize in your ad are:

    • Low Miles
    • Clean and Well Maintained
    • Full Service Records
    • Non-Smoking
    • One Owner

    Step 3: Dealing with Buyers

This is the toughest part when it comes to selling your car – dealing with the general public.

There will be shoppers trying to low-ball you, those who don’t show up for appointments, and those who have no common sense or manners.

Here are the most common situations you’ll encounter and the best ways to respond:

    1. If they ask what your rock bottom price is

Just tell them you haven’t established one yet. Let them know there are a few people interested and that you’re confident you will work out an agreeable price with one of them. Tell them you’ve done a lot of research and know its a fair price, then counter offer by knocking a couple of hundred off the asking price.

    2. If they make a low-ball offer right off the bat

Try to use the old salesmen’s trick by telling them you have someone coming by to take a look at the car in the morning, and that they offered $500 more for it. Let them know if they make an offer you like, you’d rather do the deal today and get it over with. This can work like a charm!

    4. If they’re offended by your lack of haggling

Ask them what they think a fair price would be for the vehicle. If they low ball again, thank them for coming by but that you’re sure someone else will pay what the car is worth.

    5. If they make a counter-offer slightly below your rock-bottom price

Counter offer with your lowest price and tell them that’s absolutely the lowest you will go.

After you’re done with the negotiating, you should be left with a price that is way more than what any dealer would have offered. For most people, the hassle of selling their vehicle to a private party is well worth the effort when you factor in the amount of money saved.

    IFA Auto Insurance Company

    IFA Auto Insurance Company

    14 Walnut Avenue,

    Clark, NJ 07066

IFA Auto Insurance Company is an independent, property-casualty auto insurance company located in Clark, New Jersey. It runs its business across New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Maryland. The company aims to supply its clients across NJ, PA and MD with premium auto insurance products and at the same time to sustain superior levels of convenience and customer service to its clients. IFA was founded in 1972 and is regarded as one of the veterans in the insurance industry in the United States. It is known for its low rates, friendly client assistance and cutting-edge web technology.

IFA opened its services in the state of Pennsylvania in 2008, writing low-cost private passenger auto insurance in the area. Its transfer to Pennsylvania is the first of its efforts to expand the company. The company president, David Walsh, asserted that its user-friendly web portal will get the attention of PA drivers, because of their quick and easy auto insurance quote comparisons. On the other hand, in New Jersey, there is a comparatively high rate of traffic and automobile-related accidents. Due to this, a number of auto insurance companies show reluctance to provide auto insurance in that location. But with IFA, a car driver can even get a free auto insurance NJ quote.

With more than 35 years of experience in the auto industry, the company has witnessed the changes that have affected drivers in NJ, PA and MD, including shifts in legislation, political terrain and economic state. IFA has remained strong through the years, while other auto insurance providers have come and gone. Because IFA is an established company providing professional knowledge and expertise in auto insurance products, along with its convenient payment options, and prompt, proficient service, automobile owners and drivers continue to purchase their auto insurance policies from IFA.

One of the goals of the company is to provide ease in the process of acquiring a policy since organizing auto insurance policies can be time-consuming and complicated at times. Purchase can be done online, where the buyer can view the results of his or her quote right after completion of the application. IFA makes instant auto quotes available on their web site in as fast as 60 seconds. It provides a wide array of online tools that customers can use to verify the details of their policy, make payments, or update/change their policy. Acquisition can also be done through an independent agent near the location of the buyer. How to Refinance an Auto Loan

Refinancing an auto loan is far easier than refinancing a mortgage, and it can save you thousands of dollars in interest. Consider refinancing your auto loan if:

    • interest rates have dropped since you bought your car
    • your credit score has improved (meaning you may qualify for a better rate)
    • you financed your car through a dealership (which usually means higher rates)
    • Information about your vehicle – VIN and mileage

Review the terms of your existing auto loan. Before you start shopping for a new loan, you need to know where you stand with your current loan. Find out what you re paying in interest, how many months you have left on the loan, your current pay off amount and whether there s a pre-payment penalty in place.

Determine if your car qualifies. While each bank has it s own qualification requirements, most banks will not refinance a vehicle that:

    • has less than $7,500 left on the loan
    • is more than seven years old
    • has 100,000 miles or more (some banks set the cap at 70,000)
    • is used commercially
    • has a salvage title

You also won t have much luck refinancing a motorcycle or RV. Some banks even rule out certain vehicle makes.

Compare rates. Call a few banks in your area to get a feel for where the interest rates are at. You can also use a site like bankrate.com to look up the national averages.

Tip. Be sure to go by used car interest rates. When you refinance, that s the rate you re likely to pay, even if you have a new car loan now.

Estimate how much a refinance will save you. You can use an online auto loan calculator to get the job done.

Apply for an auto refinance loan. If refinancing still seems to make sense after running your calculations, it s time to dig into all of the details. Question the banks that you re considering about any fees that you ll be expected to pay. A small fee to transfer the title and re-register the vehicle is to be expected, but some banks may also tack on a processing fee. Also, ask if there is a pre-payment penalty built into the loan. You want to avoid this because it will penalize you for paying off your loan early.

Once you ve compared all of your options, submit your loan application to the bank with the best deal.

Review your paperwork and finalize your loan. Then, walk around feeling smart because you saved a bunch of money.

How To Sell New Cars (Without Hating Yourself) – The Truth About Cars #geek #auto #parts

    #how to sell a car

How To Sell New Cars (Without Hating Yourself)

I remember the look on my father’s face when I explained to him that I would be selling cars. It was the look any of someone who has just heard the details of a grisly murder; a bit of curiosity, quickly overtaken by disdain. He sank into his chair. “It’s a job,” he grunted, and I realized that was as strong an endorsement for my new job as I was going to get. Truth be told, I felt about the same.

It s no surprise that the car salesman has been painted as a snake-oil pusher; a charlatan peddling his wares to people in an unethical manner. Like all stereotypes it s a vast overgeneralization, but I had the same perceptions of car salesmen as anyone going into my first day at work. I wondered: how accurate were the portrayals in popular culture? Would I have to get white shoes and slick back my hair? Would I have to wear a pinky ring?!

My fears were assuaged as I was let in on the trade secrets. Here’s the dirty, sordid summation of car salesmanship: guide, but don’t push. That’s it in a nutshell. Sure, we accentuate the positive attributes of a car and explain why the car fits the needs you, the buyer, have laid out for us, but it does neither you nor us any service to try and push you into a car you don’t want.

The nature of the business is a strange one; both sides, neither friends nor foes, feigning small-talk while each wanting to retain money that is up for grabs. As my contempt for my new profession faded and I discovered that a few bad apples had soiled the reputation of all car salesmen, I began to observe the odd interactions between buyers and salesmen. Certain unexpected truths quickly revealed themselves.

Truth #1: Everybody Wants to Buy, but Nobody Wants to be Sold

On my second day at the job, a veteran salesman summed up every buyer: everybody wants to buy, but nobody wants to be sold. He was right.

Instead of pushing anything, I began to familiarize myself with cars and whenever I talked to an “up” (an on-the-lot customer), I started by asking buyers what were “musts” and what were “preferences”. The process started with them narrowing in on what they envisioned for their ride. If people envision driving down the freeway in a luxury SUV, no matter what kind of sedan you show them, they will feel conned if you push them towards a sedan. Then, you will have lost their trust and most likely, their business. So, we always take the buyer’s lead. “You want a ½ ton Chevy with an extended cab? Great, we have several of them. You mentioned you would like it black. If the price was right, would you consider a different color?” Every preference has its price.

Despite the shady reputation, car salesmen really do listen and care what car you want. The problem is that most buyers aren’t sure of what they want themselves. We have to guide you to the sale, but make sure it’s your idea. Honestly, it’s exhausting. Our persuasive skills mainly come into play in the negotiation process. So, before you step on the lot, write out your “musts” and be prepared to articulate them to your salesman and you’ll make it easier to find that for which you are looking.

Truth #2: Buyers are (Most Likely) Not Professional Negotiators

As we walk amongst the rows of cars, buyers are wary of salesmen. They’re fearful we will pull some voodoo magic mixed with a Jedi mind-trick and force them into buying a car against their will. Once they’re in the office, a façade of skepticism and unearned bravado washes over them and anxiety dissipates like a Xanax in full effect. Husbands will swagger as if to say, “I’ve got this. I know how to haggle.” It’s an odd phenomenon because this is where buyers should feel the least confident.

We know the buyer likes the car. The average person goes through the car buying process a handful of times in their lives. Yet, while the salesman deals in car sales frequently, the buyer often puts forth a confident front. It’s reminiscent of the stereotypical tourist who saddles up to the blackjack table in Vegas insisting that he has a “system” after having read a book about gambling on the plane. Remember: they didn’t build Caesar’s palace by losing to tourists, and we don’t sustain a living by being bested by buyers. Does it happen? Sure, but not often.

It’s weird to witness; the theatrics people pull to show they won’t be pushed around. They will stomp out in a huff and hope we chase after them. They will low-ball us and claim that they saw the exact same car down the road for that price. If they had, they would be down there buying it.

The best way to get a killer deal is to approach the negotiation from a prepared standpoint. Do your research! Know, realistically, how much the car is worth (not according to Kelley Blue Book, but local market value), and understand that the dealership needs to make a profit, too. If they offer you a ludicrous deal, showing them that you know your stuff goes a long way to getting them to knock off the high-balling. If you come prepared with a reasonable offer, based on facts and not wishful thinking, things will go a lot smoother for everybody and you won’t appear foolish. While bravado is often a sign of unsure footing, preparedness illustrates to us someone who is not easy fooled and will often yield a better deal.

Truth #3: The Real Savings are in the Trade-in Allowance, not the Price

People do whatever they can to not pay sticker price. Paying full sticker can feel like a moral defeat. However, where salesmen often have the most wiggle room is in the trade-in allowance.

We get a commission based on the profit the dealership made. We also give you the littlest amount for your trade-in so that when we sell it, we make the most money. Furthermore, we need to allow as much room as possible in case your trade-in (that you swore “runs like a top”), needs costly repairs.

When you come into our office and demand we lower the asking price, we are hesitant to do so because it eats away at the profit margin as well as our commission. A better tactic is to ask for a better price on your trade.

This is tricky. Don’t be defensive. Everybody is defensive when that jewel of a car is appraised for two-thirds its actual value. Instead, insist that the sticker price is a bit high, but that you are more concerned with the trade-in allowance. Getting a thousand dollars more for your trade-in is the same as getting a thousand dollars off the selling price. But it can be easier to get the trade-in number to budge.

Of course, every dealership is different and may have different policies as to how they figure commission. So it won’t necessarily work at every dealership. But if raising the trade-in allowance doesn’t affect the salesman’s commission, then you will likely get less resistance from him.

It’s a strange business, alright. However, people need cars and as my dad said: it’s a job.

how to remove Liquid Glass Auto Polish.

when I got my 01 black on black Vette in 2010, the paint was a mess. I used LG before and had good results. So I started by washing with hot water and lots of Dawn, that seemed to strip it pretty good. I started with the LG around the back hatch. I noticed the product was going on really streaky, so I stopped and had a heck of a time removing the haze. It left streaks in the paint, which I got out by buffing by hand. At this point, I stopped using the LG.

I got a clay bar kit, and Meguiars fine cut, seal, polish, carnuba wax. Washed the car with Dawn again. Over the next 2 days, I applied the various Meguiars products and I was quite satisfied.

what I have noticed is that under the right light conditions, the back hatch has a “milky” appearance. the car has never been wrecked or re-painted, so I attirbute the “milky” to the LG.

I tried hot water and Dawn again, clay bar again, and some rubbing alcohol, and Dupli Color(brand) grease wax remover, and there is no change in the “milky” appearance. Help. Any suggestions as to how to get this Liquid Glass off. I went to the local store where I bought the LG, and they no longer sell it and the owner was of no help.

    #how to sell a car

Websites that promise to buy your old car can save time and hassle – but do you get its full value?

    6:30AM BST 14 Apr 2014

Selling a car is never much fun. Do so privately and you’ll be lucky not to have to deal with at least one time-waster. Go via a dealer and you’ll struggle to make what you might through a private sale. Therefore it’s no surprise that online services are becoming increasingly popular.

The online option is broadly split into two camps. The first are companies (such as the high-profile Webuyanycar.com) that offer an instant valuation over the internet and then have collection points for cars. The second are glorified car dealers who negotiate over the phone, pay for and collect the car themselves, and usually sell on to the trade.

Most people will be familiar with Webuyanycar.com . courtesy of a TV ad campaign featuring actor James Corden. That makes it a good place to start to see if these services give great value for money, as Corden insists in his most sincere voice. Actually Webuyanycar.com doesn’t appear to. The price it quoted for a 2010 60-reg VW Polo 1.6 TDI was £7,275 and there’s a £74.99 “transaction fee” on top. That’s all fine, except the valuation tool on the CAP valuation guide suggests that car would make £9,000 to £9,450 if sold privately, and anywhere between £7,725 and £8,250 if a dealer bought it.

Wewillbuyyourcar.com offered £7,786 for the same car. Thecarbuyingservice.co.uk which is apparently RAC certified says: “We’ll try to give you an honest, fair price that we’ll stick to,” was more on the money with an instant offer of £8,113. But I couldn’t beat Wewantanycar.com which said the Polo was worth £8,337.

How does a more expensive car fare? Using a fictitious 2012 BMW 318i with 22,000 miles, I tried the same test. CAP says a private sale would net £13,000-£13,500 while a dealer would pay £10,900-£11,650. Again, Webuyanycar.com gave the lowest valuation, citing £10,025. Wewantanycar.com was next, offering £10,945, followed by Thecarbuyingservice.co.uk at £11,387 and Wewillbuyyourcar.com which valued the BMW at £11,761.

How to Get Bank Auto Loans with Bad Credit

You may be here if you have bad credit and are looking for bank auto loans. People with bad or no credit have a harder time obtaining a car loan than people with good to excellent credit. However, do not fret if you have really bad credit because there are options available to you. People have different reasons for having bad credit, such as irresponsible spending habits, or unexpected medical bills. Regardless of your situation, there are lenders that are available to people with less than admirable credit ratings. These lenders specialize in bank auto loans for people with bad credit and will be able to work with you so that you can obtain a loan for a new vehicle. Your credit history is not the only determining factor when trying to get approved for a loan. Besides your credit history, some things that a private auto loan lender will look at are; current monthly earnings, duration of job, and your financial situation.

Applying Online Many people who have no credit are ashamed to ask for a loan and give up before they even try. Did you know that there are many lenders on the Internet that are willing work with people that do not have a credit score? As a consumer with no credit, all you need to do is to fill out an online loan application and have sub-prime lenders compete for your business. The best way to get a bad credit bank auto loan is to fill out as many online applications as possible and see which lender will bite .

Funds for Down Payment Another factor of how much you will be able to receive within your auto loan package is the amount of money that you have for the down payment on the car you are attempting to buy. Remember that a down payment is a very important determining factor when getting accepted for a loan with no credit, because a higher down payment means that there is less risk on the lender. Also, a large down payment can prove to the lender that you are a responsible individual who knows how to save and will provide evidence that you are improving your credit score.

Seek a Co-Signer The last factor when trying to get bank auto loans with bad credit is to seek out a co-signer. A co-signer will help out your cause and will increase your chances of getting a loan. The reason why a co-signer helps when trying to get private auto loans is because they are partially responsible for the loan and the lender will also look at their income as a determining factor when approving your loan application.

Remember that there is hope for you if you are trying to get bank auto loans with bad credit. If you follow the steps of applying for loans online, increasing your down payment, and obtaining a co-signer, then you will most likely get approved for a no (or bad) credit private auto loan.

    Fix Mistakes

Check your credit report to make sure your credit score isn t being dinged unfairly. If creditors have cited you for late payments when you ve paid on time, write to the credit bureau where the erroneous entries appear and request an investigation. Each bureau has 30 days to complete its investigation in most cases and must remove the disputed item from your report if it can t find proof that the entry is valid. It may keep you from being able to refinance for a couple of months, but the difference fixing your report can make to your credit score may be worth the effort.

    Keep Your Payments Current

If you have bad credit, it may be because you re in a financial pinch and delinquent on some of your obligations. Keep your car loan in good standing by making payments on time, even if it means being late on other bills. Lenders are more inclined to write a loan to a car owner who has remained current on his auto loan than they are someone who s already behind on payments.

    Know Your Options

You re unlikely to be able to refinance your auto loan through your current lender. However, multiple inquiries for a new loan won t have a significant impact on your credit score, as long as the inquiries take place within 30 days. Shopping around is worthwhile. Depending on how much you re refinancing, a 1 percent difference in interest rates can save you hundreds of dollars, if not thousands, over the life of the loan. Steer clear of predatory lenders, who advertise their ability to provide bad-credit loans but tack on excessive fees and demand higher rates than you might otherwise qualify for.

    Add a Co-Signer

Depending on your credit profile, you may not be approved for a refinance, particularly if you owe more on the car than it is worth. In that case, a co-signer with excellent credit may provide the assistance you need to secure a new loan at an acceptable rate. Any co-signer generally needs a credit score of 700 or higher and must sign the loan papers to indicate her commitment to repay the loan if you are unable to do so.

    Things You’ll Need

    Financial and professional references

Set up some accounts in your name to prove that you are responsible with your money. Most credit agencies will look favorably upon someone who has home utilities and a cell phone account in good standing. You may be able to get a reference that says you pay your bills on time.

Open a checking and savings account. If you don’t overdraw your accounts or write bad checks, then your bank should write you a reference to help you get a no credit car loan.

Ask your employer for a statement of proof of employment. This document should say how long you’ve been working for this company and the likelihood that you will have this job for the next few years.

Speak with friends and family members to find someone to cosign your no credit car loan. Get someone with a good credit ranking to be your cosigner.

Look for different no credit loan options at various banks and credit agencies. Your bank might be able to finance your loan if you have been in good standing with it for a few years. Ask about the possibility of refinancing your loan for a lower rate after you build up credit.

Make your no credit car loan payments on time. Timely payments will help you build a good credit history and open up more possibilities for loans in the future.

How to Get No Credit Check Loans

    Payday Loans // Kelvin Wilderman // August 22, 2012 // 1 comment

No credit check loans provide access to instant funds for urgent life events such as emergencies, car repair, and urgent payments of important utility bills. People with less than outstanding credit score find it hard to apply for a personal loan with traditional lenders namely banks and credit unions. Aside from the tedious and painstaking application process, these entities check on the credit score and rating of applicants prior to approval.

Sadly, people with average to poor credit score are denied of access to instant cash. This occurs especially when needs arise in between salary schedules. No credit check loans or bad credit loans however solve this dilemma by facilitating the fastest, easiest, and most convenient means by which everyone- people with good credit standing or otherwise- can apply for a loan and get cash in a matter of hours (even within 1 hour).

Majority of us have experienced the financial difficulties brought about by the economic collapse a few years back. A large portion of the population is still in the process of recovery, but there are still individuals who experience occasional problems with finances, especially in between paydays. Getting loans without a credit check provides a sense of relief to borrowers through small, but very useful cash to cover for events and situations that need urgent funding.

Payday loan lenders have been around for many decades and have helped millions of borrowers with their respective emergency financial needs. New features in recent years have made it ever more popular during these financially-embattled times. For instance, online payday loans are very trendy now that Internet access is at its all-time high and still growing. It is due to online payday loans and cash advances that faxless payday loans were also introduced to the public. This payday loan service became a hit due to the fact that borrowers were not obligated to send in the loan application requirements, thus saving them time and money.

Benefits of No Credit Check Loans

    • The absence of credit check (Experian. TransUnion and Equifax ), one which is a routine performed by traditional lenders, encourages people to get extra cash without hesitation. This makes it relatively hassle-free, even for people with poor credit score, to pay off outstanding debt right away.
  • By paying off important financial obligations such as auto loans, mortgage, credit card debt, and insurance policies on time, borrowers avoid unnecessary late fees and penalties altogether.
  • Paying off outstanding debt for other secured and even unsecured loans by using the cash from this short term loan assists in improving the credit score of borrowers, thus enabling them to be approved of new loans from traditional lenders.
  • With these outstanding benefits, why wouldn t you take advantage of this lending service?

    Loan Features

  • No need to submit requirements

How to Lease a Car and Get the Best Deal

    • Over time, the cost of leasing several cars will likely exceed the purchase price of a new or used car.
    • Don’t tell a car dealer you plan to lease until after you’ve negotiated the car’s purchase price.
    • Beware salespeople who focus only on your monthly payment will be. Stay aware of the total price you’ll pay, including down payment and monthly bills.
    • Related How-Tos

A car lease lets you drive a new vehicle without paying a large sum of cash or taking out a loan.

To lease a car, you simply make a small down payment less than the typical 20% of a car s value you d pay to buy followed by monthly payments for the term of the lease. When the term expires, you return the car.

Leasing a car has some drawbacks, however. Among them:

      • You don’t own the car when your lease expires. You essentially rent, not buy, the car. So you don’t have equity in the car to use toward the purchase of another vehicle.

      • Over time, say 10 years, the cost of leasing several cars will likely exceed the purchase price of a new or used car.

      • Lease terms can carry steep penalties. You may have to pay penalties if:

-You exceed the number of miles in your lease contract.

      – You fail to keep the interior and exterior of the car in good condition.

      – You drive the car hard and inflict significant wear and tear on the car’s performance and appearance.

      – You want to return the car before your contract expires.

Does a lease make sense for you?

Leasing is more beneficial than buying when you:

      • Don’t have the cash to buy the car.

      • Want to drive a vehicle that’s out of your purchase price range.

      • Won’t likely exceed the mileage cap in a contract—usually between 10,000 and 15,000 miles per year.

      • Can take good care of the car’s exterior and interior, paying particular attention to avoid nicks, spills and other cosmetic damage.

      • Expect to lease another car when your vehicle’s current contract expires.

Exceeding the mileage limits on your lease can cost you 10 to 15 cents per mile. The dealer will inspect your car just before the lease expires, and you ll also be charged for excessive wear and tear.

      How to Lease

Leasing a car is less complicated than buying one. But to get the best deal on the car you want, you must still follow these steps:

Step 1. Choose a type — What kind of car do you want? Better yet, what car do you need? A convertible? A sedan? An SUV?

Step 2. Pick your models — Make a list of car types in your price range. You can reduce non-lease costs by including models with favorable gas mileage, high dependability, top safety features and low insurance premiums (ask your auto insurance agent for a list of vehicles that fit the bill).

Step 3. Take a test drive — Once you’ve narrowed your list to a few models, take each car for a test drive. Pay particular attention to comfort, visibility, braking, steering, internal noise and shock-absorption. At this stage, don’t yet mention you intend to lease (more on this in Step 6).

Step 4. Ask about safety — During your test drive, ask the salesperson whether the vehicle comes with anti-lock brake systems (ABS), electronic stability control (ESC) and head-protecting side air bags. All are valuable safety features.

Step 5. Compare lease deals — When you return home from the dealer, calculate the lease deals on offer and figure out how much you can afford to pay monthly.

Step 6. Talk price first — Once you’re ready to return to a dealership to strike a deal, don’t tell the dealer you plan to lease until after you’ve negotiated a purchase price. Most people who lease are unaware that their monthly payments will be based on the final agreed-upon price.

Step 7. Negotiate up — Negotiate the final price of the vehicle up from the rock-bottom cost to the dealership. You can find out what new cars cost a dealer for $14 per vehicle at Consumer Reports. Your monthly payments will be based on the price you and the salesperson settle on. That price will fall somewhere between the dealer’s wholesale price and the manufacturer s suggested retail price.

Step 8. Beware of gab — Your salesperson may try to push you toward closing the deal by focusing on the relatively low amount you’ll have to pay each month. This, however, will add to the total amount you ll pay.

Step 9. Paying the Lease — The larger your initial down payment, the lower your monthly tab will be. As with any bill, you ll face penalties if you fail to make payments on time. Turning in your leased car early, before the loan term ends will typically result in a penalty—unless you are trading in the car for another leased or purchased car.

How to Get a Guaranteed Car Loan

Financing a car can be a stressful time for some people. If you have bad or no credit, it can be quite hard to get approved for a loan. There are some ways to get a guaranteed car loan but watch out for predatory lenders.

    Other People Are Reading

Get a guaranteed car loan to finance the purchase of an affordable used car. Since these loans have high interest rates, you want to be able to pay them off as soon as possible. You’ll build your credit rating when you pay off this loan on time and your next loan should have a better rate.

Organize your financial and personal documents so that they can support your loan application. You’ll need to have things like pay stubs, tax returns and proof of utilities or a lease in your name. Even high-risk lenders require some proof that you’ll be able to pay back the loan.

Talk to credit unions in your area. You’re going to have to fill out a loan application for each one and possibly have a cosigner for your loan. A guaranteed car loan has a higher than average interest rate but you still might find a better deal if you look at several lenders.

Fill out an online application to be considered for loans at various dealerships and lenders. Some sites, like Carloan.com forward your application to hundreds of affiliates, so you have a greater chance to get a guaranteed car loan if you have bad credit (see Resources below).

Meet with various car dealerships if you have no luck with your other applications. Many new and used dealerships offer guaranteed car loans regardless of your credit situation. Dealers will almost always have the highest interest rates on their guaranteed car loans.

The truth on how to get a free car or auto wrap. #german #auto #parts

    #auto wraps

    Paid To Drive Auto Wrap

The most likely reason you’re looking at this site is because you heard that it’s possible to get paid money to drive your car, or you heard you can get a car to use for free. While both of these are possible, the truth is that getting them won’t be nearly as easy as a lot of websites make it out to be. There’s a fair amount of luck needed to get chosen to participate.

The get paid to drive concept gained popularity during the 1990s when roadside advertising was near capacity. Many companies wanted to advertise their service or product to people driving, but billboard and other traditional advertising space along busy roads and highways was severely limited.

A solution to this advertising problem was addressed with car wraps. Companies could advertise their products or services on the outside of cars to reach people driving along the roads where they couldn’t get advertising space on billboards. The car wrap gained popularity through the 1990s when traditional billboard advertising remained tight, but when billboard advertising softened in the late 1990s, this took a heavy toll on the car wrap advertising companies and many of them are no longer in business.

The car wrap companies have had to reinvent themselves as niche advertisers for specialty campaigns and that is where they remain at this point. For certain advertising campaigns, the auto wrap still has an appeal of being different than typical advertising.

For companies that are looking for a unique campaign, the auto wrap offers a cost effective way of getting their brand name out there. If a company were to try to do this on their own, purchasing an entire fleet of cars for an advertising campaign would be overly expensive. Instead of purchasing their own cars, companies “rent” space on individual private citizen’s cars. In return for letting the company “wrap” your car with their advertisement, they’ll compensate you with a monthly payment. The payment can be as high as $400 a month for a full car wrap and lesser amounts for a partial car wrap or a window wrap.

Another option that some of these companies offer in place of a car wrap of your own car is giving you a free car with advertisements already on it. You usually don’t get paid in this situation or get to choose the type of car provided, but you do receive free use of the car for the period of the campaign. Your only expenses are gas and insurance meaning that you receive transportation at a fraction of the cost of owning your own car. There have been some rare instances when drivers could get paid in addition to receiving a free car. In specialized campaigns, some companies will pay you to drive the free cars along certain, specified routes each day, but they are extremely rare these days.

So what’s the catch? The main one is there are far more drivers wanting to be paid to drive than advertising campaigns available. If you don’t drive a lot of miles (typically over 800 miles a month) or live in a highly populated area (large college campuses seem to be an ideal location) where the advertisement will be seen by a population the advertisers crave, your chances of being chosen are slim.

While the chances of getting paid to drive are not very good, they are better than playing the lottery. If you meet the requirements and live in an area you believe would be desirable to advertisers, it could be worth the 15 to 30 minutes it takes to fill out a few free the online forms. If you are lucky and do get picked, you will significantly reduce your driving expenses with little effort on your part.

Keep track of the creation and implementation of a unique road trip destination site coming this summer.

How to Choose the Right Insurance Company #used #car #listings

How to Choose the Right Insurance Company

If you’ve read our “10 Steps to Buying Insurance ” article, you should have a pretty good idea of how much car insurance to buy and how to find a low-cost policy. But how do you make sure that the company you sign on with is going to be reliable? When we say “reliable,” we’re talking about how the insurer treats you, the customer. Most importantly, how will the company deal with you when you file a claim?

To help answer this question, we consulted two insurance experts: Dennis Howard, director of the Insurance Consumer Advocate Network (I-CAN) and a retired insurance adjuster, and Doug Heller, a consumer advocate at The Foundation for Taxpayer Consumer Rights. a California-based consumer advocacy group. Both had several ideas for consumers determined to make sure their car insurance investment is directed toward a trustworthy company, one that will pay on time and in full.

    1) Visit your state’s department of insurance Web site. Although you may not be familiar with it, your state, and every state, has a department of insurance. Most departments have Web sites, and many publish “consumer complaint ratios” for all of the insurance companies that sell policies in their state. This ratio tells you how many complaints a car insurance company received per 1,000 claims filed.

Both experts recommended that consumers use complaint ratios to screen prospective insurers. “Just because they’re a big name doesn’t mean that they’ll be a ‘good neighbor’ or that you’ll be ‘in their hands,'” Heller noted.

If you’ve done your homework, you should already have a list of car insurance companies with the lowest premium quotes. Now jot down the companies with the lowest (or best) complaint ratios. Then, compare your two lists the companies that rank best on both lists merit your strongest consideration.

If you can’t find complaint ratios for your state, Heller recommends examining the complaint ratios published by other states. Keep in mind that a single insurance company’s practices can vary significantly from state to state a subpar ratio in one state doesn’t necessarily mean the situation is the same in your state. But watch for general trends. If an insurer is getting a lot of complaints in several other states, you probably don’t want to get involved with this company. The I-CAN Web site provides links and contact information for every state’s department of insurance .

Also note that insurance department Web sites often provide basic rate comparison surveys. These can give you a rough idea of which insurers might interest you on a financial basis without the hassle of typing in all your personal information (as you must when you use one of the online quote sites).

    2) Find out which insurers body shops recommend. One of the best ways to identify reliable insurers, according to Howard, is to contact local body shops that you trust and ask for their recommendations. Body shop managers have a unique perspective to offer, since they regularly interact with insurance adjusters. They know which companies have the smoothest claim processes, which affects how quickly the work can be completed on a damaged vehicle. And they know which companies are pushing aftermarket parts, in lieu of genuine original equipment manufacturer (OEM) parts, to cut costs.

    3) Check the J.D. Power Ratings. J.D. Power and Associates collects data from individual policyholders nationwide and rates them according to coverage options, price, claims handling, satisfaction with company representatives and the overall experience. A quick visit to the J.D. Power Consumer Center will give you a feel for how the major carriers stack up. J.D. Power also publishes an annual survey of major auto insurers Amica and Erie have finished at the top for the last three years. These are also companies that Howard recommends: “Erie is sold by independent agents, who are very knowledgeable about the product. I like their claims handling approach. Almost all other companies look at a claim and find a way to not pay it. Erie and Amica will look at it and try to find a way to cover it.”

    4) Consider insurers’ financial strength ratings. As a final check, you can take a look at the A.M. Best and Standard & Poor’s ratings. Both companies publish financial strength ratings for all insurance companies these “measure” an insurance company’s ability to pay out a claim (they have nothing to do with the way a company treats its customers).

For the general consumer, looking up these ratings is only a formality, since most of the well-known carriers are going to be a safe bet. Moreover, independent agents would be unlikely to recommend a company with dubious financial standing. Still, if you’re considering a smaller, unfamiliar insurance carrier, you might consider this research time well spent. Insurance companies often provide this information on their Web sites, but if not, you can run a search at the A.M. Best and Standard Poor’s sites.

The A.M. Best rating is expressed as a letter grade from A++ (the highest) to D. Some companies may be assigned ratings of E (indicating regulatory action regarding the company’s solvency), F (in liquidation) and S (suspended). In any case, you should only work with companies that have at least a B+ rating.

The Standard Poor’s ratings range from AAA (the highest) to CC. Additionally, some companies receive ratings of R (under regulatory supervision) and NR, which means “not rated.” The letter grades might be modified by a plus or minus mark. Consider only those companies that have at least a BBB rating.

    5) Still confused? Consider working with an agent. It used to be that everyone purchased auto insurance from an agent, but now, car insurance companies like Esurance, Geico and others allow you to purchase insurance directly over the phone from a customer service representative or online. Still, many of the major players have preserved their national networks of local agents even if you use State Farm’s or Allstate’s Web site, you will still be assigned a local agent.

There are two kinds of agents:

    • a) the captive agent, who represents only one insurance company (major carriers like AAA, Allstate and State Farm sell policies through captive agents).
    • b) the independent agent, also known as a broker, who represents several insurance companies and therefore does not have a vested interest in selling you a policy from one particular company.

The main advantage in having your own agent is that this person has a vested interest in keeping you happy. Accordingly, he can become familiar with your situation and guide you toward a suitable policy. Howard favors the use of agents and advised, “Don’t rule out direct providers, but my personal preference is to have an agent, preferably an independent agent, write your policy for you. An independent agent would become aware of less advantageous conditions with one company [and help you move to another]. You can change carriers without changing your agent. I encourage consumers to develop a relationship with their agent.”

The prospect of good working relations with an agent may help you to make a decision: When Heller purchased auto insurance for the first time, two insurers gave him similar quotes, but he went for the slightly higher one because the agent had been highly recommended by a friend. “You shouldn’t go direct without always checking out other options,” he said.

But, he cautioned, “Never feel pressured by a broker or an agent. Take the time to talk with an agent or a broker as well as do your online research. You may not need an agent you may find a better deal with a company that operates direct.”

Independent agents sometimes charge a fee for their services, but you may be able to negotiate that. You should agree upon any fee in writing before making a purchase. Look for agents who are certified by Independent Insurance Agents of America (Big “I”) or Professional Insurance Agents (PIA).

Of course, we know you have better things to do with your time than think about car insurance. Realistically, most people won’t be able to do everything on this list before choosing an insurance carrier. But if you feel that you’ve been burned during the claims process in the past, consider at least one or two of these suggestions you’ll thank yourself if you’re ever involved in another accident.

Three American Cars Make Consumer Reports Top Ten

U.S. cars, including the battery-powered Tesla Model S, account for three of the top 10 picks by automobile testers at Consumer Reports for the first time since 1998.

Tesla Motors Inc.’s $89,650 Model S was the top overall pick for the second year in a row by the independent product-testing magazine. General Motors Co.’s Buick Regal was named the best sports sedan, a category the BMW AG 328i won last year, and its Chevrolet Impala was the top luxury sedan.

“For years, domestic automakers built lower-priced and lower-quality alternatives to imports, but those days are behind us,” said Jake Fisher, Consumer Reports’ director of automotive testing. “Today many domestic models can go toe-to-toe with the best imports.”

Consumer Reports tests and evaluates cars for how well they drive, interior-finish quality, safety and reliability. The 2015 rankings, released Tuesday, influence car buyers and are published in the Yonkers, New York-based magazine’s annual automobile issue.

For GM, which spent much of the past year grappling with the fallout from an ignition-switch defect, the rankings bring needed exposure to Buick and Chevrolet models with stodgy images. Tesla, which has had no shortage of attention for its all-electric cars, would need to find a way to boost production capacity to use the rankings to increase sales.

    Youngest Automaker

Tesla is the smallest and youngest publicly held U.S. automaker, delivering a record 9,834 vehicles last quarter worldwide. Including product-development and other costs, Tesla is the only unprofitable automaker among the world’s 20 largest on the basis of market valuation, according to data compiled by Bloomberg.

Elon Musk, the co-founder and chief executive officer of Tesla, plans to increase capital expenditures to $1.5 billion this year to boost production, build a battery factory and add at least two vehicles to the company’s lineup. Tesla said last month it will be able to assemble 2,000 vehicles a week by the end of 2015 as it works toward 500,000 automobiles a year by 2020 and millions by 2025.

Despite the company’s small sales, Palo Alto, California-based Tesla has roughly a $26 billion market capitalization. Detroit-based GM, which sold 9.93 million vehicles worldwide last year, has a market value of about $61 billion

    Buick Surprise

While GM’s vehicles may not hold the same public cachet as Tesla’s, Consumer Reports heaped praise on the Buick unit, which became the first lineup by a U.S.-based automaker to crack the top 10 on the magazine’s rankings of overall brand quality

The Buick Regal was deemed by the magazine to be “surprisingly agile” in defiance of its brand’s stereotype. While the model has been around for years as a “comfy cruiser,” the Regal now has Opel underpinnings, delivering “Teutonic ride control that provides a Europhile driving experience,” the magazine said. It surpassed BMW’s 328i, which had won the category each of the last two years.

GM’s gains in the rankings came after a record-breaking year of recalls in 2014. Automakers recalled a combined 64 million vehicles in the U.S. last year, with GM alone accounting for about 27 million.

    Better Manufacturing

Consumer Reports predicted increased public attention on safety will spur automakers to continue to “run scared,” pulling the trigger faster when defects are detected. Concerns that would have been overlooked in the past won’t be, resulting in better manufacturing practices and safer cars overall, the magazine said.

Still, Detroit-made models have leaped in the magazine’s tests since 2012. Ford Motor Co.’s overall road scores are better than Honda Motor Co.’s, and its latest offerings have scored especially well. The brand is still weighed down by “legacy vehicles we cannot recommend,” the magazine said.

GM and Ford are improving in repair costs, but there’s still a gap with Japanese brands.

Japanese automakers still dominate both the list of top-pick cars and the brand report card. Fuji Heavy Industries Ltd.’s Subaru brand earned three top picks with its Legacy, Impreza and Forester. Toyota Motor Corp.’s Lexus was the highest ranked brand.

Toyota’s Highlander earned honors for best mid-sized SUV, and its Prius was named best green car for the 12th year in a row. Honda Motor Co.’s Odyssey was honored as best minivan.

    VW’s Audi

One European automaker, Volkswagen AG’s Audi subsidiary, remains on the list of top picks, with its A6 luxury car.

Consumer Reports saved its biggest praise for Tesla.

Tesla’s Model S surpasses every other vehicle for sale in the U.S. scoring well as a sports car, a luxury car and a green alternative to a gasoline-powered engine. More is expected this year with an upgraded performance 85-watt version with separate motors for front and rear wheels.

“It has moved the needle so dramatically,” said Mark Rechtin, the magazine’s autos editor. “Nothing is usurping it. It accomplishes everything people wanted in an electric car.”

Tesla can’t get complacent though, GM is targeting a 2017 release of an electric vehicle that can go more than 200 miles on a single charge and cost less than $40,000 and Apple Inc. has been working secretly on an electric vehicle that may begin production as early as 2020, Bloomberg News reported last week.

How To Find a Good Car Mechanic

    1 of 3

We hear it all the time: “Where can I find a good car mechanic?” In the past, word of mouth was probably the best way to find an auto repair shop that would do the job right and charge a fair price. But now, a good mechanic might be only a few mouse clicks or touchscreen taps away.

Crowdsourced review sites have greatly simplified the search. Here are a few tips on how to work these sites to find a good car mechanic in your area. Keep in mind that this isn’t an exact science. Sometimes a highly rated shop might disappoint, but at least you can tilt the odds in your favor.

Yelp.com describes itself as a site that “connects people with great businesses,” whether that’s a hot new restaurant or a top-notch dentist. And, luckily for car owners, it also has auto repair reviews. The site is free and has a mobile version, plus apps for Android and Apple mobile devices.

We’ve had good experiences with Yelp recommendations as we looked for a mechanic to work on Edmunds’ long-term 1996 Lexus ES 300, which is the subject of our Debt-Free Car Project. With our new long-term vehicles, we tend to use dealerships exclusively. But because containing costs is important for the Lexus project, we’ve used Yelp four times to locate independent mechanics. Of the four, we would go back to three of them. We’ve found Yelp to be the most useful site, thanks to its review volume and convenience.

Here are a few tips to help you narrow down your mechanic search. Type “auto repair” into the search field and enter your ZIP code. You can filter the results based on distance, most reviewed and highest rated. The goal should be to find a place that strikes a balance between a good rating and a substantial number of reviews. For example, a place may have a glowing review, but if it’s the only review, that customer’s experience might not be the same as yours. Or worse, it could be a misleading review from an employee or business owner.

Yelp has an algorithm that helps it spot misleading reviews, but sometimes they can slip by undetected. That’s why it is important not to put too much stock in one review. Instead, see what patterns emerge after you’ve read numerous reviews. Look for reviews that are specific and give plenty of details about the users’ experiences.

Sometimes, the owner of an establishment will reply to a review. This response can either be a thank you to someone for a good review or a defense or apology if the review was a negative one. Either way, we consider a thoughtful reply a good sign particularly in response to a negative review. It shows that the business cares about its reputation.

    Angie’s List

Angie’s List prides itself on having a thorough vetting process for its reviews, which cover everything from automotive listings to home repair and even wedding planning. In a search we did for our area, Angie’s List provided a number of repair shops nearby, but we found the volume of reviews lacking when compared to Yelp. For example, one repair shop we used for the Lexus had just one review on Angie’s List, and it was from 2008. The same shop had 22 reviews on Yelp, with the most recent one being less than a month old.

The small number of reviews on Angie’s List can be both a good and a bad thing. On one hand, the chance of a falsified review drops considerably, since the site requires a paid membership to access the site and post a review. But at the same time, it is hard to get a feel for a shop that has very little feedback.

Google’s enormous database will yield the greatest number of search results, but they may require some extra filtering to be useful. Type “auto repair near (your ZIP code)” into the search field. Ignore the sponsored ads at the top of the page. The repair shops will appear about halfway down the page, with their address to the right of their listing. Google has its own review and scoring system. Approach these as you would Yelp reviews.

We have dealer locator for those in search of a dealership service facility. The Edmunds moderators closely monitor the reviews for misleading postings.

How To Find Used Car Parts

In a perfect world, your car would never break, and if it did, magic fairies would fly into your car with a stack of fresh parts and fix it for you. But the world isn’t perfect. Your car will break, and if you want to a) save money and b) be awesome, you’ll fix it yourself.

So you’ll need to beg, borrow, steal or buy parts somehow. You could go to the dealership or an auto parts store — and there are a lot of parts that you’ll want to get there. But maybe they’re too pricey or don’t have the part you need. If so, it’s time to go to the junkyard.

It’s best to have a plan when you’re on the lookout for used parts, so you’ll need to figure out what you need, where best to get it, and who has it. There are definitely things you don’t want to get at the junkyard: timing belts/chains, accessory belts, hoses, filters (unless they happen to be brand new. you can score from time to time if someone’s car was sent to the boneyard right after a tuneup), ignition tuneup parts, etc. But there are a ton of parts that are great to get from a salvage yard:

    • body parts
    • glass and mirrors
    • trim and interior parts
    • durable suspension parts, such as springs, control arms, and axles
    • engines and transmissions, in some cases
    • intact door and window rubber
    • screws, weird fasteners, blade fuses
    • cool emblems (hey, why not?)

That perfect world I mentioned earlier is nonexistent, but in the real perfect world (the one I live in, anyway), you would have an extra or two of the car you own, just for parts. But usually, there’s no place to keep stuff like that. You don’t want your house to be that house (unless it already is, in which case, good for you!). You found your dream car. Now, you need to pay for it. Most car shoppers need a car loan to buy their next new or used car. Check out the car financing basics covered below to make sure you get the best car loan for your new vehicle.

    The Basics of Car Loans

A car loan is a way for you to purchase a new or used vehicle. You borrow money from a lender and pay them back over time, usually with interest. The amount you borrow is called the loan principal. Car loans almost always include interest, which is how lenders make a profit on the money they lend you. The interest rate is a certain percentage of the loan that you must pay back in addition to the loan principal. So, if you borrow $20,000 for a car at a 5 percent interest rate, you’re going to end up paying the bank $21,000 over the life of the loan — that’s the principal, plus the interest. While you re paying back the lender, you re responsible for all taxes, fees and expenses, like gas, insurance and maintenance, associated with owning the car.

Many people think that when you finance a car, the finance company lends you the money and the car is yours. That’s a simple way of looking at it. In reality, however, the lender is buying the car and letting you use it. The lender technically owns the car, though you agree to be responsible for it. In fact, you won’t have the title to the car and fully own it until you make your last loan payment. If you don t make your car loan payments, the lender can repossess the car.

    The Car Loan Term

The length of the car loan, or loan term, simply refers to the amount of time you have to pay the lender back. If you sign up for a five-year term, in five years you’ll pay the money back and will own the car free and clear. The vast majority of auto loans are repaid in monthly installments. You send the lender a set amount each month and slowly pay off the loan.

    Your Credit Score

When it comes to how much interest is charged on a car loan, some people get charged more interest, and some get charged less. Obviously, you want to get charged less. The interest rate lenders charge is based largely on your credit score, which is a number that credit bureaus assign to you based on how much debt you have, how good you’ve been about paying bills on time, how long you ve been using credit and your debt to income ratio, which is the amount of debt you have versus how much money you earn. Lenders use the score to assess how likely you are to pay them back. If your score is low, lenders will assume that you re at high risk for not paying the loan back. The higher interest rate is the lender requiring more money to cover that risk. Lenders may also require a larger down payment from buyers with lower credit scores to offset their risk as well.

You should know what your credit score is before you apply for a car loan and do your best to make sure it’s as high as it can be. Generally speaking, credit scores of 720 and above get the best loan rates. For a small fee, you can get your credit score through FICO, which is the most commonly used credit score among lenders. You can also get credit scores from credit bureaus like Equifax, Experian and TransUnion. If your score is not as high as you’d like, paying off old bills (like credit card debt) and paying all bills on time for six to nine months should bring your score up and help you get a better interest rate.

You ll also want to take a look at your credit report to make sure everything is accurate. If someone stole your identity and opened a credit card in your name and you aren t aware of it, this could affect your ability to get a car loan. Plus, you ll want to report the fraudulent activity right away to the credit bureaus so any errors can be fixed before you apply for auto financing.

    Apply, Apply, Apply

You wouldn’t just apply to one job or one college, so you shouldn’t apply to just one lender for a car loan. Contact your bank, local credit unions and other lenders to find out what they’re offering. You’ll have to fill out loan applications, which will ask for your social security number, employment and income information, monthly expenses, like mortgage and rent, and any outstanding debts, like credit cards and student loans. When you fill out auto loan applications through multiple lenders, be sure to do it all at once, or within a close time frame. Credit bureaus will see your multiple applications and realize you re shopping for auto financing. If you spread your applications out, keep in mind that multiple applications for financing can lower your credit score. Do all your applications around the same time, so as not to lower your score.

Do not exaggerate your income or misstate your expenses and amount of debt. Everything you fill out on a loan application will be verified and if you lie, you ll get caught. The lender will pull your credit history and credit score and decide whether or not to make you a loan offer based on that information, as well as your income, expenses and debts.

Look over all the loan offers you get in detail. The interest rate you re being charged shouldn t be the only thing you look at. Avoid offers that charge you a lot of fees. Another thing to look at is the car loan term. A longer auto loan might result in a lower monthly payment, but over the long haul, you ll pay more in interest. Also, watch out for loans that have a prepayment penalty, which is a fee charged if you pay the loan off early. Paying the loan off early may not be something you’ll be able to do, but if your long-lost Aunt Mabel dies and leaves you a fortune, paying it off could save you a lot of money, and you don’t want to pay extra fees to do it.

Don’t Feel Dejected about Getting Rejected

If your car loan application is rejected, you ll probably feel terrible, but that rejection is likely a good thing. A rejected loan application means the lender didn’t think you’d be able to pay the money back. As hard as that is to hear, that lender likely just saved you from getting into more debt than you can handle. Reassess your budget to determine what you can truly afford, not just monthly, but over the life of the loan. Try finding a less expensive car to buy, or save up more money so you have a larger down payment, which will reduce the amount you ll need to borrow.

    Show Up with Financing

Many car buyers might think that the car dealership is offering you the best financing rates. That’s not always the case. While you should certainly consider the loan the dealership offers, the best way to get the lowest interest rate is to bring a pre-approved loan from your bank, credit union or third-party lender when you go to the dealership. If the dealership can beat the interest rate, fees and other loan terms you ve already been pre-approved for, you can decide to take the dealer s offer. If not, you already have financing.

Bringing your own financing to the table also means you’ll have the upper hand when it comes time to sit down with the finance manager. Some dealers will give you a great price on a car, but will charge you a higher interest rate on the car loan, which will cost you more money in the long run. This is an area where dealers can make a profit on the vehicle. With financing in hand, you can focus on the price of the car and your trade-in, if you have one.

Now that you understand the basics of financing a car, you ll be able to get the best car loan for your budget and your new vehicle.
